Ok so i woke up this morning to find that my vibrant was heating up to 84 degree celcius which is like 183 degree farhwenheit. I burnt my fingers while touching the phone this morning (not literally). And here is what happened:
I usually sleep by charging my phone and putting it under my pillow before sleeping. I plug in my headphones, use miui music player's sleep timer and sleep. I didnt have this problem before. Here is my config:
Project - V Latest
Rooted
No Battery Hog Apps (Normal Drain = 2MA)
Bali - Capped
Running at stock frequency (No overclocking)
The only change I have made before this started happening is changed to bali kernel. Could that be the problem. Is it normal?
have you oc'd at all, how long has this issue been going on?
generally speaking i have noticed that when i had my vibrant oc'd it would heat up alot when charging, my reccomendation is to set a setcpu profile to throttle your cpu speed when charging. I had mine throttle back to 800MHz while charging and the heating issue was severely diminished. Never let your phone charge while the cpu is oc'd beynd 1ghz that has always given me heating issues.
Hope this helps

Thx for the reply. I forgot to post that i wasntr overclocking at all. And its not undervolted as well. Thanks for the reply anyways
Any bali kernel gives my phone a perpetual fever. I've taken all bali downloads off my sd and will not use one anymore I don't care about what minimal if any battery life it's supposed to give you(although I never noticed any battery life increase) if it fries my phone.

Wait, where do you find MIUI sleep timer?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
same exact thing happened to me, ran project-v and on overstock at the time, i honestly thought the internal components would have melted from that heat. Only thing that happened was the battery was completely drained
The first time I had used Bali on a ROM, I thought I made a bad flash and my phone was throwing a feverish fit.
bali is good and all, but all that overheating scares me.
Typically that happens to me except I don't run any apps while asleep. I've taken it to tmo and they said it's fine. If anything my batt smells like what the batt itself is made off. More along the lines of something from the batt has leaked. However the phone ends up overheating on a simple wordfued or words with friends play action. At times the phone ends up turning itself off.
It may be because you have the pillow over the phone. I left mine charging once with a pillow over it by accident and it got real hot.

Wifi overheating
Hi people.
I flashed Bali 1.8.8 UV and noticed my Vibrant had severe overheating problems when wifi is turned on. Not working as you may know, but with a minimal network traffic. I have switched to Bali X, but I have heard that all the Bali kernels suffer from overheating.
Please, tell me a kernel that has great battery life and doesn't have this inconvenience. My battery drops badly with this one!
Thanks a lot.
Ecotox's kernel is save way more battery IMO!

I know, it's not Windows, but is it a good idea from time to time to reboot manually? Would we have any benefit from doing this?
Personally, I reboot only when I really have to, for making backup, or when I install anything on system level that requires rebooting. My system is solid and stable and if anything hangs, simple selective app killing solved everything so far.
I was on CM7, and Neutrino earlier and was very satisfied with both of them, but then I bought lapdock so I switched to Nottachtrix. I had no need to reboot manually with any of them. Maybe your mileage varies, and I'd like to hear your opinions.

Over 10 times a day, hardware problems causing random shutdowns all the day xD
Well, im running Th3Bill's MIUI 2.8.17 and i have to reboot the phone at least one time in the day because for random reasons, it loses internet acces, and i have to reboot it to get everything working again. Also when the camera goes crazy and when i open the app, says that can't connect to the camera. A reboot fixes that issue.
i'm using jokers CM9 and its been stable as a stable thing tied down to a really heavy stable object.
but i do reboot it 2 or 3 times a week - usually because i forget to put it on charge overnight and the battery dies

I have it automated to go to airplane mode in 11PM and it resumes in 7AM, that's about turning it off. I have it next to my bed, and sometimes I use it as a flashlight during the night. I love this flashlight app.

I remember stuck camera problem when I tested ... some of ROMs (can't remember which ones) and it was a deal breaker. You shuold reconsider your ROM-radio-kernel choice. I had best experience with Neutrino, regarding battery life, speed and stability. With Blur based Nottachtrix I lost CM goodies (which I really miss), some speed and battery life, but I gained Webtop functionality. However, Nottachtrix has proven to be stable and reliable.
I always reboot once a day regardless of its needed or not. My wife use to never reboot her inspire and she kept having freeze ups so I told her reboot once a day now hers seams to be doing a lot better.

I stopped thinking this way after 9/11. On 9/10, I went out drinking with friends and went to bed without shutting off my phone like I normally did. That morning my roommate and I were woken up by a call from a friend purely because of my mistake. Since then, I treat my phone like a landline.

ever since i upgraded to 4.2 my nexus 7 has been rebooting randomly, dosent matter how much charge i have or if im using it or not,it just happened 5 mins ago while laying there on standby. it never did it while it was on 4.1,since i got it i have rooted it and unlocked the bootloader and then when i upgraded it unrooted. bootloader is still unlocked (i still have the padlock on startup). has anyone else been experiencing this since their upgrade or is mine just faulty? ive read that some have had similar issues since the update but nothing thats only random. ive also noticed decreased battery life and sometimes not as buttery smooth as google promised.
Many people have problems because of the 4.2 update, I recommend you to back up your apps and reflash stock, and do all the ota updates right after that. I did this and my N7 got smoother and it has a better battery life now
Hope this helps.

I'm also having this random reboot issue since 4.2 update. So far it has rebooted only once when I was using it, while all other times it's just sitting there idle on my desk and it reboots. I also agree with batter life, it hasn't been great compare to 4.1.2.
Had the reboot issue at first also, but after updating all my apps ( as they became available) it seems to have stopped. No reboots for a few days now!

Well I don't know what is the problem inside the update but when I installed the ROM as rooted one in the development forum it was unresponsive and lagged... Then I returned it to the last version of 4.1.2 and then applied the properly ota and now it runs battery smooth and no more problems here, well except for the flicker that is still here

+1 for battery life being crappy. I haven't had any of the other issues you described; 4.2 is a lot smoother imo I just assumed that is why the battery drains a bit faster. But the battery life convinced me to go back to 4.1.2.

So I've had this problem for some time maybe a couple of weeks.
The problem is that I sometimes cannot wake up my device after setting it down for sometime. For example if I go to sleep get up the next morning and then screen will not turn on. I have to hold power button down for multiple seconds and press it multiple times. Also one recent occurrence of this there was massive battery use. See attached photo.
If anyone knows why this is occurring or knows any remedies that would be appreciated.
Using PA 2.54
Franco Kernel
I can provide more information if needed. Just ask.
Thanks

I was having serious issues with my 16gb. Very hard to turn on, sometimes hold power for 10 seconds, sometimes 30, sometimes 5.. all over the place. And it only started after I believe the 4.2 update.
Also, it was draining battery while off. Charge it overnight, leave it off the entire time, come back 8 hours later. Turn it on and only have 50% battery.
Sometimes the charging animation would lock up while off as well. And if the device was turned off, and you plug it in to charge, it turns on. It shouldn't.
I think I've narrowed it down to the bootloader. My bootloader was at 4.13, and Flashing the 4.2.1 and 4.1.2 factory images didn't help.
Last night I finally fixed it. I ran the 4.1.1 factory image. Which put the 3.34 bootloader back in place. This wipes the device. So I flashed the recovery back and then reflashed Paranoid Android 2.99B6. All is good now, it turns on like it should, doesnt come on when plugged in, etc.
Meanwhile a new 32gb I have I can flash the 4.2.1 factory image, and I have no issues with that one.
Which bootloader are you on?
Hmm. That seems to be the exact same issue I have!
I just checked my bootloader and I have 3.41. But I never went up to 4.2. I stayed at 4.1.2 with PA 2.54.
Hmm. Maybe I'll try what you tried!

You can flash the 4.1.3 bootloader from JB 4.2 and use it with 4.1.2. I am, and it works perfectly and I never have a problem booting or bringing it out of sleep mode.
I think it was just your Franco kernel. Kernels are typically the cause.
I'm running PAb6 and no problems.

Just had this similar problem. I drained the battery to about 11% on wednesday night, so i shut it off and charged it to 100% on that very same night. Turned it on on friday night (It should have been turned OFF all this while) and it wont start. After the help of the AC charger, it came back on and found out the batt was at 0%. Which should not be the case even if the tablet was accidentally switched on because theres no way it can drain from 100% to 0% in just 2 days. And everytime i leave it plugged into AC it suddenly turns on and shuts down due to low power. Am using TWN ROM V1 (Android 4.2.1) with M-Kernel A17 kernel if that has anything to do with it.
So I think I have it figured out that if I set my wife policy to keep awake always no problems, but if it is set to keep awake only during charging, I will have problems
I will try it out on a higher cpu setting with semi awake

Just wiped the device and flashed CleanROM 3.0 on it and NOTHING else (No extra scripts, custom kernels, radios..etc) and it seems to have been stabilized. Although the battery drained pretty quick while i was using it last night, but I was installing apps and setting up stuff on the nexus so its not a very accurate benchmark. Will continue to monitor.
Hmm, I see. Well that's great that you solved it
It seems after switching my minimum cpu to 200. It still froze when I was trying to wake it up this morning
Maybe a full wipe is needed...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yes you should have done a full wipe like I did. All still seems to be good on my side. Looks like for my case it was M-Kernel a17 causing the problem. I doubt such a thing would happen due to a faulty bootloader.
So I did a full wipe of my tablet and instead installed PA 2.99 b6, flashed correct gapps, then flashed the beats audio v3b2 and the same thing occurs.
im using franco kernel v30 no OC just gpu oc to 446.
my tab if i leave it unplugged and set wifi policy to keep wifi on during sleep only when plugged in I get this problem that I cannot fix... which is the tablet freezes or something and i cannot turn the screen back on until i hold the power button, Then turn it back on. Also on a side note for the first time this morning, the back of my tab was hot, which never occurred when i was on PA 2.54
Any insights on this issue anyone?
full wipe and flash a ROM that comes with the stock kernel. I did that with CleanROM 3.0 and its still working fine to this day. Will probably try flashing franco or M-kernel again when I have the time. But for now it seems that a custom kernel might be the issue here.

Anyone got an issue where after some time (can be one week plus), you pick up your tab and the touchscreen is completely unresponsive on the lockscreen, can't even press powermenu? Reboot fixes. I had it on JSS1J and persists into JSS1Q. Hard to isolate as it may not happen for say a week of uptime, seems to be no pattern or consistent trigger

I been getting the same thing. Charging over night the tablet wakes but touch is unresponsive. I'm on Clean rom and Elementalx kernel. Yesterday morning after 8 hours on battery and unused it woke and touch was fine. This morning after 6 hours on charger, over night, it woke and touch is fine. Need more testing.

I see this from time to time on mine. What sucks the most is when the damn alarm is going off and I can't do anything but hold the power down to reboot. Wife loves this "feature" in the early AM.
I have an unlocked bootloader but I'm running stock kernel (3.4.0-g6537a16) and stock JSS15Q. I do see random reboots as well, seems to be related to the screen going to sleep by itself but I can't reliably reproduce it.
Happens to me as well. Annoying.
I had this on stock locked so its nothing to do with bootloader or custom kernel/ROM.
Curious if a CM based ROM will affect this i.e. not stock JSS1Q based.
Is everybody facing this touchscreen issue? I am planning to get the new nexus 7 2nd Gen from canada. Is it something you can discover in the first week itself because the person who is bringing it will get the tab a week before her return.
If you're lucky it'll show up in that time period.
Others have gone 10 days.
Have them put off buying until the last second....
Same thing happening to me. The screen becomes unresponsive. Happens in the morning when the alarm is going off and have to reboot. I just updated to ElementalX 1.4 and hoping it'll fix it. I'm hoping Google comes out with an update soon because my screen sensitivity sucks sometimes. It's not registering my taps.
It doesn't lol it's either hardware or something in 4.3base

Coincidence: The touchscren went unresponsive after the alarm clock went off. Maybe there is a connection?
