[SCARY] Battery Heating Like A Mother****** - Vibrant General

Ok so i woke up this morning to find that my vibrant was heating up to 84 degree celcius which is like 183 degree farhwenheit. I burnt my fingers while touching the phone this morning (not literally). And here is what happened:
I usually sleep by charging my phone and putting it under my pillow before sleeping. I plug in my headphones, use miui music player's sleep timer and sleep. I didnt have this problem before. Here is my config:
Project - V Latest
Rooted
No Battery Hog Apps (Normal Drain = 2MA)
Bali - Capped
Running at stock frequency (No overclocking)
The only change I have made before this started happening is changed to bali kernel. Could that be the problem. Is it normal?

have you oc'd at all, how long has this issue been going on?
generally speaking i have noticed that when i had my vibrant oc'd it would heat up alot when charging, my reccomendation is to set a setcpu profile to throttle your cpu speed when charging. I had mine throttle back to 800MHz while charging and the heating issue was severely diminished. Never let your phone charge while the cpu is oc'd beynd 1ghz that has always given me heating issues.
Hope this helps
-Cheers

Thx for the reply. I forgot to post that i wasntr overclocking at all. And its not undervolted as well. Thanks for the reply anyways

Any bali kernel gives my phone a perpetual fever. I've taken all bali downloads off my sd and will not use one anymore I don't care about what minimal if any battery life it's supposed to give you(although I never noticed any battery life increase) if it fries my phone.

Overstock, bullet, and now maybe dragonmodz w/smartass are the only ones I trust for reliability now.

Wait, where do you find MIUI sleep timer?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

same exact thing happened to me, ran project-v and on overstock at the time, i honestly thought the internal components would have melted from that heat. Only thing that happened was the battery was completely drained

The first time I had used Bali on a ROM, I thought I made a bad flash and my phone was throwing a feverish fit.
bali is good and all, but all that overheating scares me.

Typically that happens to me except I don't run any apps while asleep. I've taken it to tmo and they said it's fine. If anything my batt smells like what the batt itself is made off. More along the lines of something from the batt has leaked. However the phone ends up overheating on a simple wordfued or words with friends play action. At times the phone ends up turning itself off.

It may be because you have the pillow over the phone. I left mine charging once with a pillow over it by accident and it got real hot.

Wifi overheating
Hi people.
I flashed Bali 1.8.8 UV and noticed my Vibrant had severe overheating problems when wifi is turned on. Not working as you may know, but with a minimal network traffic. I have switched to Bali X, but I have heard that all the Bali kernels suffer from overheating.
Please, tell me a kernel that has great battery life and doesn't have this inconvenience. My battery drops badly with this one!
Thanks a lot.

Ecotox's kernel is save way more battery IMO!

What thread? Can you provide me a link? Thanks!!

I apologize I haven't replied its been a while since I've been on here, but here's the link for ECOTOX's kernel

phones over heat using navigation

does anyone overheat from using navigation? anyone know how to stop this?
Are you oc? Do you have set cpu? Is your phone in direct sunlight on your dash? If you are oc'd get setcpu and usue profiles. Make sure you turn down your speed if the temp gets over 40c
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
i did that it still get hot, i turn it down to 346000 still getting hot
By hot, what temps are we talking? And what is your cpu clocked to?
40C i set the clock to 346XXX and still running hot
Yea I noticed driving over the weekend that the g2 definently overheats if navigation is left on for extended periods of time.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
damn after a couple of google search this happen on other android device...theres gotta be a way to solve this, i bet its the polling frequency its trying to poll the thing to damn neear perfect real time therefore making it hotter, i think if we can figure out how to lower the polling interval it will help, but i hate programing so i dont know
Me neither. It's even worse on my Xperia x10.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA app.
Another question is if you have it charging while using navigation as that will definitely make the phone feel like it is overheating since the battery is getting warm from the charge.
mine always overheats lol
are you asking us or are you asking me? lol
Huh. Am I the only one who hasn't had this problem?
I run it on my dash, connected to USB power, constantly navigating and it never gets more than mildly warm. 246MHz-1.49GHz, interactive governor, CM6.1 RC2.
For the question about charging while navigating, yes that will def increase the heat coming from the phone. For guy who is "constantly" navi, are going long distances like over 20 miles at a time or navi short distances?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Mine overheats (uncomfortable holding) after using Pandora over the night. Still runs fine just hot as F!
i noticed that aswell when navigating with the phone. what can we say we got hot phones eh? yeah yeah lame i know. but i hope this dosn't damage the phone. Btw my phone isnt OC only rooted running CM 1.6 RC 3
The backplate on the G2 is also metal, so it might only feel hotter to your hand as opposed to many other phones which have a plastic backplate. This is actually good for heat dissipation (heat can escape vs. being trapped by the insulating plastic), bad for your hands.
well that brings to me the question when is it consider dangerously hot?? 43C is the max i seen using navi
bump for anyone with a fix
This is nothing new. My N1 got really hot when plugged into the car dock and navigating.
It never caught on fire, and had no permanent damage. The worst part about it was the charger couldn't keep up with the phone. I would get to my destination, take the phone out of the dock, and it dies right away because the battery is dead. I haven't used the G2 for navigation on a long trip yet.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Is me or this guy been open threads just to complaint about the g2 u may have bad luck with u unit because i never have none of the problems u talking about the zoom problem the resolution problem the overheating problem next thread will be hinges problem

My first crash?

I had a scary experience with my phone this morning. Woke up and found my phone switched off. I thought the battery has gone dead, so I plug it to a charger. Then here was the scary part, nothing happened. My phone led is not coming on. Power switch not responding.
At the end. I had to remove the battery to get my phone boot up again and everything seems fine. And the battery wasnt flat, still 38% left.
I wonder what would cause this? Is that a common symptoms with OC CPU? Running 1.5Ghz, minimum 233mhz on demand using the kernel comes with cm7 rc1.
The weird thing is the phone crash while on standby.
Many thanks

Personally I don't overclock HTC don't offer any guarantee of stability over the standard clock speed and in my experience overclocking can less to all sorts of problems set your overclock to more modest levels and I suspect you'll avoids any problems in future
mate I had the same problem today morning, and a few weeks before. and somehow i got text messages like #[email protected] twice

Try lowering your clock to 1.3Hgz and observe.
Is the 1ghz clockspeed not enough? I only do overclocking on my gaming pc
I have been using this clock speed for 2 days, it passed qraduant benchmark without any problem. I will try to lower the speed a notch and see if this happens again.

General Warning: Overheating!

Just a warning to all using the FreeX10/other 2.2+ performance ROMs that I experienced is the overheating of the device. This may only be me, but I'm posting this just in case.
Quick details of my X10:
Flashed to FreeX10 Beta #4 last night.
Used SetCPU to set scaling to Performance and minimum clock speed @ 998MHz.
Using the 3G (build.prop) enhancement modification.
I have a rubber casing around the phone.
Usually connected to WiFi.
My phone has been on since last night and has been charging for most of the time since then and now.
Just then, I decided to turn my phone off a couple of times. I did not notice the heat from just holding it. I was browsing here and read a thread about removing the battery, so I just did that for some reason. It wasn't until I opened the case when I could smell the smell of melted/hot plastic - it was coming from the battery. I immediately placed the open-phone and the battery in front of a cool fan, the battery and phone both started to cool down and the smell disappeared. I couldn't find any liquid/melted plastics anywhere on/in the phone, but I could definitely smell it.
Just a general friendly warning (that can't hurt). Not sure if it's documented or not, and whether this is only Froyo or below/above.
Used SetCPU to set scaling to Performance and minimum clock speed @ 998MHz.

Why using setcpu? I use the same rom and it runs like hell without setcpu. No overheating neither...

nytral is right. You set the CPU to run @998Hmz at _all time_ so it'[s only natural that the device/battery overheated.

u have managed to make a perfect guide on how to overheat the phone...
u push all the components to their max working capacity (full cpu, 'enhancement' of radio) and on top of that u keep it enclosed in a rubber casing...
bravo!!!

Sorry, Min is 245. Not 998.. :-/
And I'm pretty sure the material of the casing (rubber vs hard plastic) wouldn't matter, but would contribute to the heating. I'm sure that a lot of people would use a case of some sort to protect their device.
The only reason why I started this thread is because I was on a ROM not too long ago (a couple of nights ago), which has exactly the same settings and modifications, except, it wasn't running Froyo - it was running Eclair. And since I installed that Eclair ROM, the phone has only been turned off once (with the battery removed, about a couple of days after installing it and it being on and charging pretty much 24/7) and has been charging pretty much non stop.
The only difference is it is using Froyo instead of Eclair... Hence why I thought it'd be best to start this thread.
LOL, now this is n1 example of a person who didnt read before he flashed
Solution dont whipe data...

lol nice overheat guide
i'm using setcpu to scale it to powersafe and max @512 Hz
and when the screen is off it's max is set to the lowest (256?)
and when i wanna play games i always set it to min 256(?) and may 998 ans performance
then my battery won't drain so fast
nice overheating guidelines
Do you guys actually see a difference with setcpu? I have used every option available and nothing ever got slower or faster for me.

Yeah I'm running 2.2.1 and my X10 is no where near hot. well, at least in temperature because its a hot-sexy phone ;P
Nice overclocking there though X10 watercooling systems now in development, expect another forum branch to open in XDA in the next coming weeks.
To my understanding the 2.6.29 doesn't support overclocking so setcpu shouldn't make a difference at all. The rubber case probably contributed to the heat retention but the heat likely is from the constant charging.

Try the JuiceDefender app and set it to turn off wifi and data when your screen is off or unless certain apps are visible, helps with battery and stops unused functions while your phone sleeps.

Phone doesnt overheat, if you use it right.
Useless topic!!
Sounds like a guy (not saying names) that Z tells to remove some files from "some" roms he was taking without permission, just trying to desestimate Z rom.
Beta 4 runs very well, theres no overheat.
Sorry for my bad english!!

Try charging the phone while its off. Ive heard people say that their phone wouldnt charge past a certain point but after charging it whilst off it returned to charging back to 100 percent. I bought a new usb cable for my charger after the terminal end into the phone became deformed and my phone now charges ~3x faster but ive never had it get abnormally hot.

Hmmm... i set cpu to 998 when running emulators, otherwise its just ondemand. Using freex10 b4 for a fortnight high use frequent charging added 3g build prop lines, got no overheating issues.

Its funny that anyone with the know how or has supposedly read these forums continue to pay for (or pirate!) apps that have no effect. WITHOUT UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER AND CUSTOM KERNEL OVERCLOCKING APPS HAVE NO EFFECT! Check the overclock option in JuiceDefender, this option is not supported! The developer of the app has apparently left out any notice that it doesnt work with our kernel so they can continue to make sales.

define overheating. i push my ns to over 110F all the time. but that is by choice. if its hitting over 110 by itself, then its overheating. if its in the 90's then its not overheating. it does tend to get hot when plugged in and using the phone, especially when gaming or watching flash video.
does it need to be defined? I mean I can clearly feel that the device is pretty warm? So when I charge it I should turn off wifi, bluetoofs and kill all aps? If thats true when how my friend manages to play games while charging NS and get no heat at all, definetly something with the hardware is fcuked up
How can i see how hot my phone is? Mine gehts warm sometimes but i never considered it would overheat because of undervolting...

feeling warm to your hands is relative. that is not a temp indicator. try this experiment. get a cup of room temp water, a cup of ice water, and a cup of warm water. put one hand in the ice water, the other in the warm water for 1 minute. then put both hands in the room temp water at the same time. the hand that was in the ice water will feel like the room temp water is hot, the hand in the warm water will feel like the room temp water is cold. you will not believe the outcome, almost like your senses are deceiving you. clearly both hands are in the room temp water, yet both hand feel a differnt temperature
there are apps that will give you your phones battery temp, like secpu has a battery temperature monitor. that will be a little more accurate than what your hands are telling you. whenever you use your phone, the temp will go up. the processor and battery produce heat when used. the harder you use it, the hotter it will get. especially when its plugged in because of the electricity moving(also produces heat). i hope that helps somewhat and doesnt end up confusing you
Thank you for info, I will get heating problem fixed.
I just want to ask, because I dont want to create a new thread does you(nexus s users) get random reboots ? While having call or just BOOM it reboots itself.

what rom and kernel. there are kernels that will do that. also, if you are undervolting/underclocking that could happen. usually a little more voltage should fix it.
about the heat again. ive gotten my phone so hot before, that it hurt holding in my hand that was when oc'd very high and benchmarking very hard. putting it in the fridge, at that point, helps

Using while charging is fine unless it is overheating.
The reason it's recommended not to use the phone while charging is because it reaches high temperatures much faster and so is more likely to overheat causing hardware problems
I personally don't game while charging since this phone (especially i9505) gets really hot really fast

yes i know that heating its very rapid while under charge..expecially now that its so hot during day and cant dissipate...in may when i bought s4 had less problem

I thought I was going crazy, but YES, the phone gets unusualy hot just below the camera.
I noticed this right after performing the Apps2SD update, and since then have been freaking out!
I am afraid that constant heating and cooling of this kind can damage the sensitive parts inside,
so I have been limiting my use of the phone in the last few days.
People, this is not normal. Somebody needs to contact Samsung.
There must be a software patch for this...?!
Oh yesss!! Let's make another thread about overheating -___- It's already known that this happens, so you better get used to it.
