My Nexus One will be here tomorrow, and I am wondering what the Pro's and Con's of rooting are.
I've rooted before. I had a G1, but I bricked it, accidentally. Won't stop me from rooting the Nexus, but just give me some reasons why.
I obviously know about cooked roms, etc. I've read about the Desire rom with Sense UI, is it worth it?
Just want your input.
The "search" function of the forums is a great feature. I've seen several threads about this very subject already.
Its definitely worth it! I enjoyed the phone stock, but when i rooted and went with cyanogen 5053. I couldnt happier. I thought the phone was fast already, but with the ROM, its a step above!
And plus some apps from the market are only for rooted phones. SetCPU (underclocking app) is one of them, and has helped me out with battery life. moderate use, i got about 18 hours yesterday with still 35% left on the battery.

I searched and didn't find much specific. Sorry we're not all search pros.

Its great how we have members that spam other members topics with unuseful replys just to get there post count up.
This is exactly why I don't post alot.
@stuff: I rooted my n1 and flashed cyanogen 5053 and gotta say it's alot faster! If your the kind of guy that gets alot of apps and games like me there is another feature of rooted phones called apps2sd. Apps2sd allows you to set a partition size of your choosing on your sd card for use of storing installed apps and games. That way you are not limited to the internal phone memory. Also as h2opoloplyr_11 stated there are some apps that require your phone to be rooted. Thats all I can think of right now as I am new to android and the n1 but I'm sure there are more reasons and more reasons to come as devs get creative.

It has nothing to do with getting our post counts up and everything to do with having a clean, uncluttered and efficient forum. No one likes to see the same questions asked every few days. The point of a forum is for it to serve as a repository of information to help and educate future enthusiasts. This guy isn't special and somehow entitled to create another redundant thread instead of using the search function like the rest of us do.. Not to mention he said in his original post that he rooted his G1.

Why the hell isn't there an official stickied topic listing the pros and cons of rooting your device. The first thing people would see before they go asking repeated questions would be that thread.
Good question...the info was stickies in the G1 forum..probably still is.

Which is why the op's question should have either been answered or his topic reported. What could have been very simple has turned to a two page topic with only a few post that actually answer the question and it's not because of the op. It's because of all the other post within the topic that are completely of topic including this one.

Every time someone asks THIS question. It's about 10 pages of people giving different great benefits. What difference is 2 pages telling the guy to Lrn2Surch
If someone is too lazy to SEARCH for benefits. Who would ever expect them to accomplish rooting, and the various benefits without further questions that have been seen 100's of times.
It seems like I've seen this topic before.
Hi im a 15 year old noob and i own the HTC Wildfire im living in the UK on the 3 network and my wildfire is currently on 2.1 update 1 and there are many things this has stopped me from doing. And to be honest im really tired of waiting for this so called 2.2 update which i was expecting to arrive in october before i even bought the phone and doing extensive research it seems this update isnt in any rush whatsoever. I currently have a 2 year warranty one i would like to keep . I hear rooting and flashing my phone will void this as the carrier will see i have modified the ROM however if my phone were to break would it be possible for me to put the stock rom back on to hide this? Also do they really check that well? And if an official update does ever arrive is there an option to return to it? I would also like to know what the best method of rooting and flashing along with the best ROM. Thank you very much even you reading this all without replying is much appreciated. But of course if you reply i fkn love you (no homo).
Hey, I doubt they check that well and you can always install a RUU (ROM update utility/Goldcard) off shipped ROMs to restore, which leaves no traces (I think).
As for the best ROM, in my opinion it is CyanogenMod 6.1 RC2, as for me it is the quickest, it has the most tweaks, and everything works really. It has a lot of tweaks and fixes, and suggestions from the CyanogenMod community are being constantly implemented. If you want a "lighter" version you can try OpenFire, but for me CyanogenMod is a lot quicker and better to use. The only thing is, neither of these ROMs have HTC Sense, which you will not miss once you find the alternatives. I'm using LauncherPro Plus with Beautiful Widgets. Sure the HTC stuff looks pretty, but it's so freaking slow! If you really need a Sense ROM I'd suggest WildPuzzleRom 8 as it's Froyo based also.
Hope I helped

Hello im 19 years old, im from sweden..... and think this thread is completley wrong section of the forum.
To understand what I mean read this: http://www.xda-developers.com/announcements/a-reminder-from-the-xda-moderator-team/
keep your questions in the right section witch in this case is general.
also why would you write you age and so on no one cares! absolutly not under the developement part of the forum!
to add something that isnt offtopic in my post I got a short statement:
If you absolutly want to keep the garantue and to be sure of that the phone wont turn into a useless pice of plastic: DO NOT ROOT OR FLASH ANYTHING FROM THE XDA-FORUM, CLICK THE "X" IN YOUR UPPER RIGHT CORNER! FAST before the phone explode!!!!!

He's only stating the obvious, this kind of post doesn't belong to the WF android Developpement sub-forum =/
Even a noob without reading the rules, one would already know to post this question in the General sub forum.
I was, and am still an android noob, however i learnt to flash, mod apk's and theme up my phone like crazy, just by simply reading and following instructions carefully. It's simple.

Hi,
I had a NAND ROM once.
I installed it, charged it to the Max, powered it down, and put it in the cupboard for a week.
And guess what. There was still some charge on it when I switched it on again!

Great, another "whats got bets battery life" topic, we have been running short on these and other circular never ending topics like them, lets all enjoy at the finality of the answers.
Go and try some roms and find out what has best battery life for YOU because what MAY have good life for us doesn't necessarily translate to best for YOU.

with reading, reading, reading. and with experimenting. with trying something out and not expecting it to be 100% perfect the first time i did it. not posting and expecting others to solve basics for me.
but i digress. so many threads about "best this" or "best that"...it seems that people are hesitating to experiment or impatient at that their first choice may not be the best answer.
anyways. blah blah.

That doesnt mean you cant point out the fact that its a rediculous topic to make because its already been made over and over again, In the least it will make the OP aware that next time he/she/himshe needsto use search or take a simple browse of the sections before cteating a topic (ITS ALSO IN THE RULES AT NUMBER 1)

All these "best" topics are completley useless other then to clog up the forum with useless junk, There is just too many of them and they always have the same answers. In some section they get closed/deleted by mods so its not as if we are complaining for no reason.
Anyway, Welcome to the HD2 forum some advice for you...
DO NOT create topics in the dev section, Its for posting dev releases/work/reference ONLY!
DO NOT create "Best rom" or "Best Battery" or any other kind of "best" topics as they will always get same response, "best" is subjective upon the user, The ONLY way to find the "best" is to try it yourself because best for you is not always best for us etc.
PS. Incase you wasnt aware, All XDA n00bs at registration are give this video to watch so they have absolutely no excuse creating topics that are going to be obviously a FAQ, Its just common sense, ANY question that a n00b can think of has very likely already been asked AND answered a million times already so all they have to do is take 2 seconds to look, its as simple as that.

OK so the new to the forum thing should have been new to HD2 forum. I have been following the galaxy S forum for last few months. so I know the basics..
but I don't want to go through tens of threads so the best thing would be to ask or look for best ROM topic..
yes it is irritating to read all the best ROM, kernel topics but that's what newbies like to know.. I think the solution would be add a newbie section.. so that the development section will remain clean.. or you could just stop replying to such threads... whats up with that? ?

SFR 1.2, still the king after all this time. Until official GB or 1.3 drops, I am staying with it. Need a phone with all of its functions working reliably, none of which current GB leaks provide. CM7 holds a lot of promise but until devs get everything working I will not use it as my daily driver.

I see you are using the XDA app. You would need to switch to Browser view and search there. Or you can scroll down the General and Q&A list since it has been asked at least 4 times in the last 2 weeks. Only you can decide what ROM is best for you. You will find people that love SRF 1.2 and people who had problems with it. The same goes for any ROM because every phone is different. You won't find an answer here. You will need to go to Development and read the threads under each ROM and make your own decision. A lot of developers left XDA for various reasons, some just upgraded their phone so there is not a lot of development going on for EC05 and GB is still just a leak with no source for ROM, only kernel. That leaves only a few ROMs left and everyone wil tell you the one they are using is the best. I went to Gingerbread leaks right in the beginning and never looked back.
I'd like know this also.
I personally dont like theme of SRF1.2
and right now, themes that I like doesnt work well with SRF1.2.
I am wondering if there is stock CM7 like super stable rom for froyo?
Currently, I am tired of instable GB roms. That made me use phone less.
Is there froyo custom rom with good themes (or stockish theme)?

If themeing is your only thing then flash a prerooted stock ROM like ReRFS and then flash your themes. Super stable stock.

I used to browse the General and Q&A threads to find my own answers to start rooting long before I registered and could post at all. Later I registered myself, and used my gained knowledge to answer questions for other people in these threads.
But now, all one can find is the same repeated questions from lazy users that won't even put the slightest effort in. And none are so irritating as the "Best Rom?" threads and half of them are "for a friends phone."
Oh well, I think I'm done with the General and Q&A threads. The spirit of rooting has run dry here.

Oh well, I think I'm done with the General and Q&A threads. The spirit of rooting has run dry here.

Random FTW! (Great roms btw dude.)
I've had the most success with EC05Plus from chris41g and DRockstar's Clean Kernel. Nothing else, other than stock, works well for me.

Ok, it was late and I have a bad habit of rushing through these things so I can see the end result, sometimes resulting in bricked phones. But I rooted my phone the other night and installed baja rom. And even posted about a problem I had with a bootloop and got a quick response on how to fix it. This was on my laptop at home. Now I'm at work on a different computer, clicked my shortcut to XDA's Note 3 section to ask another troubleshooting question, and can't find the bajarom thread. Am I in the wrong section and overlooking something or what?

This should probably be in the help section. But are you in the Verizon note 3 section?

And the title of it now says the alliance rom is coming soon

Negative on being in the wrong area. Bajarom will be replaced with alliance(currently locked). Keep an eye out for it to be released eventually(hopefully towards the end of the week). Maybe someone can help you here with Baja but as of now, baja16.1 is the latest and last release.

Oh I see it now. Maybe the devs could put something about bajarom back in the title? That's confusing to noobs.
I was wondering about battery life. Granted, I've been tinkering a lot with the new rom, but my battery is horrible. Just in the last few hours, after charging all night, I'm down to 50 percent.
Also, the fast dormancy toggle and media battery drain fix buttons both come up with errors. I don't even know what the fast dormancy is so no biggie, but the battery drain seems applicable to me so I'm wondering if I need to look into fixing that?

Agreed. It's all cool about the new rom coming to (hopefully) dazzle the masses. In the meantime, however, I think BajaROM and it's support thread should've remained active. I'm having quirky issues with it and have no where to go for the kind of support the original thread offered.
The best thing now is to post any problems here. Things got a little heated as there's big anticipation for the Alliance rom but it's not ready yet. It was starting to become an ETA flame war so to keep things under control it's locked until the Alliance rom is ready. Trust me I've seen how out of control things can get on here. I'm not a dev or recognized contributor but I check the Question & Answer threads and help when I can.

I am thinking this thread is going to get locked any second most likely. But if it gets moved over to Q&A I will gladly assist with any questions. By the way, the latest BajaROM is still up on AFH for those who want it.
Cheers,
Baja

Not sure how this thing stayed in development for so long. I moved it to Q&A three hours ago, lol.
Should be moved now, and thank you for helping the community by providing answers where needed.

did you install after a wipe? I tired many different roms and baja had the best battery life for me compared to others.

Hi Im wondering if its the kernel. Im on baja and I think the battery is better but other stuff osnt working like wanam, gravitybox… dalvik and cashe didnt fix it but but the touch response is faster besides the battery. Do you know how to flash or install just the kernel to another rom? I think im going back to the stock rom
Yes I wiped before installing baja. I've started another thread with a title better depicting my problem to avoid confusion. If you have suggestions, could you post it there so others could find it as well. Thanks for the help and interest in the matter! I would post a link to the other thread but I don't know how to do that. Its here in the Q&A section, titled for bad battery life on bajarom
