I've had the HD2 about 2 weeks, and really like it.
It has frozen about 3-4 times, in all cases when I've tried to end all tasks via taskmanager. Stopping each task separately has never given problems.
Wondered if other people have seen this?
I had this problem with my HD2 a lot when I first got mine. But mine had the 3.10 ROM on it back then. When I upgraded to te 3.14 ROM this issue all but disapered.
Go to Settings>About Phone>Software Information and post back here what ROM version you have. There is more than likely a upgrade that you can get that will help with this problem. There is also a abundance of other options avaliable to you.
I've got the 3.14.405 Stock firmware, so unfortunately it doesn't fix it for me. Thanks for letting me know, it makes it less likely that there's a hardware problem.
By abundance of options, do you mean apart from not using taskmanager?
That won't be such a problem, as long as the hardware isn't faulting.

Well you said you have had your HD2 for two weeks so if you bought it from someone and not new, and they did not Hard reset the device. I recomend you Hard reset your HD2. This will remove everything from your HD2 and bring it back to factory settings. So make sure you backup everything like I posted in my last post about changing your ROM.
To Hard Reset just hold the volume up and volume down button down whilr powering on your HD2 and follow the instructions that appear om the screen.
The abundance of options I was talking about is since you have a HTC HD2 you can run multipule OS's on your device. Your options are as follow
Stock Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM
Custom Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM
Stock or Custom Wimdows Mobile 6.5 and Android from SD card
Android from NAND (internal flash memory)
Windows Phone 7 from NAND (internal flash memory)
Windows Phone 7 from NAND and Android from SD card
But I also suggest you use a task manager lile AircSwitcher or MMTask Manager Google Omarket and install it and you can find both of these on there or here on XDA if you do a search in the HD2 Wimdows Mobile 6.5 themes and apps forum. The Omarket is a third party app market that has nothing but free apps in it, worth getting.

Hello all,
I'm kinda frustrated with my HD2 device at the moment. It worked perfectly fine until a few days ago.
It has begun to freeze _very_ often. With some ROMS it can't even boot up. It freezes when I have to enter my PIN. On other ROMS it is guranteed to freeze when using ActiveSync/Exchange.
Using HSQL, I've tried L3v5y, XannyTechRom, and MIRI. All with the same result.
Have you got any ideas whats wrong with my device?
Any help will be much appreciated.
I have no idea about whats wrong but this has been a common issue/problem for many members...I don't think I saw this many issues with the HD...I dunno whats wrong with HD2 or the ROMs that it starts freezing for some...maybe the HSPL is buggy? I dunno to be honest.
maybe you should install a stock rom in between or go to MTTY and see if that fixes the issues for you.
Overall tho, its frightening to see how many people have freezing issues with Sense after flashing a couple of custom ROMs...I'm afraid it might eventually happen to everyone and thats why we need to find out what is causing this.
BTW try to format your SD card and then flash a stock ROM without the SD card and see if there is any improvement...my guess is that it will work fine again (for a while at least).
What I have figured out is that with different roms the behaviour is different, depending IN WHICH ORDER you have the links in the autostart folder.
Right after flashing it should be ok and if you install than other programms the startup interfears with the startup of htc-sense
Finaly I have the best result (on my device with the programms I have installed) keeping the htc-Sense startup as the LAST item.
You can change the order with sk-tools (Autotstart items).
You can check this (If you have a chance to access):
- Make a reset and do not enter the pin code of your sim card (on my device this was making a difference, if you do not have a pin code maybe you should take out your sim card that the phone cannot connect)
- Go to the settings and unselect in "Today" "HTC Sense"
Than you should have the normal "speed" of the device and you should be able to start sk tools and change the booting order.
It looks like that - depending on the start up order that applications - processes are waiting for each other and using nearly 100% of cpu power and you have therefore the impression that the device is frozen.
I am sorry I do not know how to change the startup order without sk-Tools
Best regards,
dingolino

When you flash lots of cooked roms, they get "bloated" and the devices started hard-resetting for no reason. this is because of files from old roms being left when the new rom is flashed.
MTTY allows you to enter the device on bootloader and use service commands to format the file system on the device so you can remove all rom files before flashing a new rom!!

basicly it will format your system and make sure you don't have any files from older roms left on the system which might cause this issues.

Do you you a 16 GB card ? for me, it's certainly cause of pb because i can use every rom without sd card
Try to ask more to sternas but i noticed he prefer keep his cook secrets
Try to install "official" 1.61, make HR after boot. After next reboot connect with PC and flash with any cooked ROM. I had the same problems like you and this helped me...

Try deleting the folder "\Application Folder" on the storage card using your PC/Laptop, and reinsert the SD card into HD2. I assume you are using ROM cooked with Manila version that has the document tab.
Let us know if this works for you. It took me a long time and many flashes to figure this out. I suppose you have configured your HD2 for emails or MS Exchange pushmail?
Edit : If you already experience the slowdown caused by inserting the SD Card, MAKE SURE you reboot your HD2 before re-inserting the SD card.
I had this "freezing during startup" with a number of roms (always after I installed my software) and since that I am always "tweaking" it by the startup order as I described it and was able to solve it!
I do not think that it is hardware related in the amount of cases which are reported. And I am also not a strong believer of this "flashing" and mtty discussion (it could be a solution is some cases but I do not think in this relatively larger number of cases which are reported).
For most of the rom cookers it is not the 1st rom cooking they are doing and the HD2 is not the 1st HD2 device for HTC as well. This is the reason why I do not think that there is a principle rom problem nor a principle hardware problem
Manila Sense is a complex pcs of software and the startup is therefore more complex.
Depending on the tweaks the rom cookers are doing on the XIP and other WM internals there could be a timing interfearance during booting and this is creating the trouble for Manila Sense startup (network, phone, etc.).
Reminds me to the "good old days" with ATART-ST where you had dedicated tools to rearrange the startup seaquenze of the Accessories
At least i think it is worth trying it, you cannot loose anything.
But I played not only with the finaly boot order of htc-Sense (the last one) but also I put other elements in a different order.
Sometimes it was helping to install Panolauncher and put it before HTC Sense startup - I had the impression that just having another application before HTCsense made an improvement to "give HTCSense" more time.
Does not sound like science but a little bit like Voodoo ...
My Autostart folder (only the applications)
1. poutlook.lnk
2. BTTrayCE.lnk
3. De|WMPTempFolder.lnk
4. PKG.lnk
5. Lotus Traveler.lnk (installed by me)
6. LotusPRUploader.lnk (installed by me)
7. Panolauncher.lnk (installed by me)
8. OM10QS.lnk (installed by me - Opera 10 beta)
9. HTCStartUp.lnk

Hi,
sounds to me like you have flashed so many times you HD2 has become "Bloated"
this is where for eg, Rom X is 110Mb, and then you Flash Rom Y which is only 100Mb.
When you do the flash there is 10Mb of residual files left from the previous rom., when this happens often you get strange things happening like you describe and worse, your device can start hard resetting for no reason!!
Go to this thread (swap the ** for tt ) h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=616422 (I cant post links yet!!) and it will fix your issue. (The thread has been shut as there has been a big argument over it, something to do with a disagreement over drivers!! - how gay!)
I can honestly say, although i have only joined recently, i have been a user of this method for about 6 years, I personally know the Guy who opened the thread and i would stand buy him 100%.
Although the thread is closed, i will help with queries via PM if you like!

I tried deleting the \Application Folder folder and reset the phone.
Of course this equaled a hard reset as all system data stored was in \Application Folder.
So I removed my storage card and did a hard reset so that the system data will not be stored in the storage card.
Hopefully this will be make the device more stable as such.
use the mtty to format ur device first, then flash the rom u want to flash.
I have encountered the same issues just like u, after use the MTTY, so far so good.

HD2 unresponsive & trapped in a perpetual cycle of self deletion and re-custimization
I got my hd2 about 4 months ago and I have to say it's one of the best phones I've ever had, only now I have a serious problem with my ex =(.
Was running a slightly modified close to stock rom wwe, without problem (except the occasional freeze every other day) however, after attempting to install another room with cookie's homepage customizer, my phone keept freezing after about 5 min after the customization process was finished.
I thought this had something to do with the apps I installed just after the rom installation process. However, after some testing the same problem occur regardless if I install just the rom.
Have also tried upgrading to another newer OS version / rom & radio yet I encounter the same issue all the time; The screen will freeze and otherwise become non - responsive and after a restart the phone may not start ( freezing on windows orange screen), or it will start the customization process anew, somehow resetting all settings and stored content. .
Is my phone messed up for good? What are my options, please help!
Cheers,
Nate.
Update 25.3: SO I formated my phone with Task29 and reinstalled the 2.09 radio. Now starting to flash Kwbr_Topix_1.5.6 rom wwe. Will you know how it goes . .
Update 26.3: It's been 24 hours since I used task29, and everything seems fine. Thank you guys so much for the tip . . Now I may once again go back to using my great phone. Ty! xD
Anybody have any input?
Try using this to format your device.
Alright, thank you. I'll try that!
Do you have the autoinstall folder on you sd card? That could be causing the issues if something is in there thats not compatible anymore. Just a thought.
You mean like a ruu_signed file on the root of the storage card?
I second hicks, known problem, 90% it's just you needing a format of the internal memory with the task 29 utility
Good evening,
I've just had my Touch HD delivered today, its not brand new, its a used item but is in perfect condition.
Anyway, the previous owner has obviously removed all of his details, pictures etc etc. However there are still a few apps on the device. Tom Tom for example, a screen rotate app and a few others.
Although they are useful, I'd quite like to have a fresh start with it.
The last owner installed a fresh windows 6.5.5 (?) before he sent me it, but I dont really know the difference, I'm a beginner when it comes to windows mobile.
So anyway, is it worth me doing a full reset on the phone? So its a cleans slate? And then updating the operating system (I need to learn about ROM and things etc), and downloading the apps that I'd like?
Things like the home screen, is the clock meant to be white and black? Because mine is like a see through bluey grey colour and I dont think the default theme is installed.
Anyway, any advice will be happily received
Thanks
Chris
anyone got any advice for a new wm user?
Any comments are appreciated
You could hard reset, but then you would no longer have whatever applications he left on there (like TomTom etc). However, it could be that he left TomTom on the SD card, and that you could simply reinstall it. That might also be the case with whatever other apps are on the phone.
The Touch HD original came with Windows Mobile 6.1. The previous owner flashed a newer custom ROM that has WM 6.5 on it. There are different versions (or "builds") of WM 6.5, but in general they look the same and they are better than 6.1.
To "update" the version of windows, would require you to flash (i.e. "install") another ROM on the phone. There are no "windows updates" via internet like on desktop computers.
Hard reseting basically brings the phone back to the fresh ROM installation state (of whatever was the last ROM someone flashed on there). So, you could do that and then you could begin to install whatever apps you want.
After you get the phone the way you like (with apps, contacts etc) you could use a program like Spb Backup to backup the entire phone. That way, if later on it gets a bit sluggish, you can hard reset and do a backup restore so that within a few minutes, you will have all your apps and contacts etc. right back on there. It saves you the time of reinstalling everything. Keep in mind that it is not always recommended (although possible) to restore a backup onto a ROM different from the one used when the backup was created.
If you are curious about what apps to install, I just posted a list of my favorites in another thread. Link here (second post)
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
Firstly, things like tomtom were on the memory card as you said, so they still work.
I've actually done a hard reset on the phone and its come back exactly the same.
So I'm guessing its had another ROM update in the past? I've been searching around for the original ROM and have managed to download one. I just dont know how to install it (done a few searches already).
I guess I'd just like to start fresh with it, and modify it in my way
Thanks again for the reply.
I would not recommend going to an original (stock) ROM. Custom ROMs are a lot better. There are some very talented people here who make changes to original ROMs in order to make them faster and to improve many of the features (as well as include new features).
I bought my HD in Nov 2008, and within a couple of weeks, I flashed a different ROM on it. It has been almost a year and a half, and I could not picture myself ever going back to a stock ROM.
You can see the ROM development section here in XDA dev. or you can visit htcpedia.com to look at other options. ROMs from Dutty, Energy, MaryOne, and Miri are among the most popular. They each create different ROMs and each has ROMs with different versions of Windows Mobile and HTC Sense (Manila 2.1 or Sense 2.5). Some have the regular HTC text messaging app, while others have removed it and include the Windows Mobile messaging app (since there have been problems with the HTC app becoming extremely slow when you have lots and lots of messages - i.e. for those "text message power users").
To flash a new ROM (takes about 10 minutes), you have two options:
1. Flash from your PC
2. Flash from the SD card in the phone
I have always done it from PC, but flashing from SD card is a safer method. If you flash from your PC, it is very important that, once the flashing starts, you never ever unplug the phone from the PC until it is totally finished and it restarts (or else you will kill your phone permanently). But, just do the SD card method and you'll be on the safe side.
The first thing I would do is to start your phone in bootloader mode (= hold volume down key the whole time and tap the power button; a red-blue-green-white screen will appear) to see what type of SPL you have (original SPL or HardSPL). You probably have HSPL, which would allow you to flash any ROM. If you have original SPL, you will need to either install HSPL to permanently have the ability to flash other ROMs or install USPL to have the ability to flash a ROM in that particular moment only.
Read more about SPL here (great tutorial).
My guess is that since the previous owner installed newer ROMs, then you probably have HSPL and you probably have a version 1.56 ROM installed. If this is the case, you would not need the upgrade steps discussed in that thread. Those are for people with 1.54 ROMs (the older, not so common ROMs). But it is still good to read as it describes installing new ROMs.
Here is a quote from Dutty about quick ROM flashing instructions:
*Flashing Guide
SAFEST WAY TO FLASH YOUR ROM IS THROUGH STORAGE CARD METHOD:
* Copy BLACIMG.NBH into the root dir of your Storage Card.
* Be sure to have at least 30% of charge.
* Turn off your device by using the Power Button.
* Go to Boot loader mode. Push and hold Vol. Down + press Power button.
* After that your device with have a white screen with text " Press to power button for continue upgrade or Press Volume down button for cancel upgrade , select press to power button and it will start upgrade Rom.
ALTERNATIVE WAY OF FLASHING YOUR ROM WITH RUU.exe
* Extract Rom download Folder.
* Be sure to have at least 50% of charge.
* Turn off your device by using the Power Button
* Go to Boot loader mode. Push and hold Vol. Down + press Power button.
* Connect your device to PC
* Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe and follow the screen instructions.

thanks for another very useful post
Ok I've checked out the device information etc.
If I show you them here would you be able to possibly point out if I'm running a good setup?
Ok on the bootloader screen it reads this..
Blac100 32M
SPL-1.56.0liNex
MicroP-Blackstone (LED) v6
When I start the phone up the first screen displays this in the bottom right...
1.17.25.09
52.69.25.37U
Also after that it shows a screen saying HTC and then Energy underneath.
Is Energy one of the ROM types?
And lastly in the device information it shows this.....
OS Version - 5.2.21901(21901.5.0.92)
Manilla Version - 2.5.20121255
ROM Version - 23.Apr.2010.WWE
ROM Date - 11/20/09
Radio Version -1.17.25.09
Protocol Version - 52.69.25.37U
Also when I press Start it shows a new page rather than a drop down programs menu....is this a part of an updated ROM?
I hope you dont mind me bombarding you with all this info.
I guess I just need an experts help
Thanks again
Chris
No problem. Glad to help.
SPL 1.56.0liNex shows that you do have HSPL and that it is upgraded to install 1.56 ROMs. That's good. It basically makes it easy to quickly flash whatever ROM you want to try out, without having to do any extra steps. So, the instructions on how to flash from memory card (above) should work for you.
Yes, you have an Energy ROM installed. You can continue to use it or you can flash another ROM if you want to try something else.
Your OS version shows you are running WM 6.5 build 21901 There are different builds out there. Some are more buggy than others, but I don't know how much they all differ from each other. The newer ones have the start button and OK button at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top, and the menus look a bit different. These versions are often referred to as WM 6.5.x instead of 6.5
Manila shows you have the latest HTC Sense version 2.5 (build 20121255)
ROM version shows WWE (world wide english) language and the date from about a week ago. I don't know if that is how new the ROM is or if that is the date the ROM was flashed. On my phone, it says "Dutty HD HG R2 WWE" (that's my ROM) but no date, so I don't know what your date means.
ROM date - 11/20/09 This is probably when the ROM was released.
Radio version: I have an older version 1.13.25.24. I believe this can be changed separately from the ROM, but if you are not experiencing any issues with bad connections etc, then don't worry about it. I have never done anything with my radio version, and I have no idea if the ROMs I have installed have ever changed that. I've never had a problem. Sorry, don't know much about the different radio versions.
Start menu opens up a new page..... This is part of WM 6.5 If you don't like it, there is an app out there that can bring back the old drop-down menu, but most people prefer the new version.
I hope that helps.
Yet again, thanks for the help.
I'm starting to understand how this little device works now.
I've decided I want to start from a fresh with the phone and attempt to restore it back to "factory" settings (if possible).
So I assume I'll be need to get hold of an original rom file?
And flash it with that?
I know newer roms are better etc, but I want to set the phone up to my specifications if you know what I mean.
This shouldnt cause any problems should it?
Also do you know where I might be able to download an original rom from?
Cheers
Chris
Sure, if you want to flash a stock ROM, you can try it and see how you like it.
You can find a lot of info about flashing on the XDA Wiki page for the Touch HD. Save it in your favorites because it could come in handy later.
In that page, you will find this link to available stock ROMs in the various languages.

This sound crazy and my suggestion is to return them from the place you buy them this can be some hardware problem.... witch mean Serious Problem
If you explain more i can try help you to find witch couse the problem with the freeze this is not normal for device with such a powerfull processor.
Anyway witch is your company? to come work for you when you are buying Leos...
everyone now will start to ask about the cool company that gives HD2 and forget about the problem
john (if thats your real name), post the same question in the leo forum and make sure to mention the installed software. also make sure you update to a newer ROM
Hope this helps
Hi John,
I have had the same problem and am currently using
Rom Version 2.10.531.1
OS version 5.2.21889
What I did to solve to this problem was
Step1: Clean everything off the device in Settings > Application > Remove Programs
(Can choose to do whatever I just chose to delete everything and start from scratch it was that or a factory reset (Settings > Security > Factory Reset)
Step2: Turn off the Location Services in Settings > location (I unchecked everything AGPS and HTC location)

Hi,
We are a small SW company. We just wanted to test these devices before star working on them. This happened when we run some programs from the program list of the device.
Thanks in advance.
i would also follow the recommendations Jalopy is making.
also make sure that you dont have too many text messages on your device otherwise HTC Messaging will slow the whole device down!

How many is "some" programs?
What programs are you using? I would like to reproduce the bug.
Sounds to me considering the amount of people having the same problem in different areas doing different steps, that this is memory related and not hardware.
Are you closing your applications after you use them?
Even when you exit some default programs (wrong or right) they are still displayed in the task manager (taking up precious memory ). Make sure you are closing your apps by checking in Task Manager and ending the task correctly and cleaning your ram or alternatively you can download Duttys Task Manager that allows you to close the app by pressing x rather than minimizing it.

This problem is already posted on this site elsewhere (a duplicate post) under Leo, as The Grizz pointed out.

Freeze after rom flash.
Hello i thought i may use this thread since the topic is the same. I recently got my hd2,so i thought i could experiment on it changing the rom that could optimize the hardware usage, since the original rom was not good. Anyway i installed Hspl_2 and added this rom:Miri_rom_hd2_WM65X from htcpedia
I followed the guide on this site so everything went fine. the device booted nicely with the new rom, but when i reboted the device it freezes on the htc logo. I performed hard reset and it works fine, but each time i reboot the device freezes at the htc logo and i am forced to hard reset it each time.
I wonder if its something wrong with the rom? and what about the radio?
Hi guys,
My phone suffers from the same, we are also looking into it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=607949
Hello there
I bought htc hd2 second hand with windows 6.5 installed on it, but i did not like it so i followed some tutorial here in how to install android. i did that and i never been happier, however i was surprised when i run out of buttery and my device shutdown then recharge it and turn it on there was windows again and i had to do all the process again to lunch android system which drove me crazy because all the app's i already downloaded and installed on SD card were not working any more ...
So i have a few questions hopefully someone can help:
1. Is there any way i can uninstall windows from my HTC HD2 permanently and replace it with Android ?
2. If not How can i help my app's from getting lost?
3. what is the best way to back up my files and data before doing any thing new to my device?
4. since i am new to this system can any one explain to me what is the different between android, mglader and nand ? and what is latest version of Android?
You´ve installed SD Android? If so, you don´t need to install it every time your phone reboots. Just go into your android folder on SD card and run clrcard and than Haret. After that your phone will boot Android. So your data probabaly weren´t erased.
And for fourth question: Android is operating system, just like WM. For HD2 there are two types of Android - for SD and NAND. SD keeps your WM in phone. You don´t do anything to the phone, so you don´t loose warranty. But is little less responsive. This version I reccommend for those, who aren´t sure if they want Android 100%.
Than there is NAND which replace WM on internal memory. It´s more risky ´cause you need to install HSPL and different loader (MAGLDR or cLK) and there is possibility that you will brick your phone. And if sending phone to service in warranty time, you should restore the previous state - install normal SPL and WM instead of android. So it´s up to you which metod you choose
Thank you very much, you do not know how much that was helpful and i think i will go with the risky option but you still haven't answered my 3rd question about back up my data ??

Titanium backup from Android market.
Search the forums for the HD2 toolkit. It makes installing Nand Android quite simple. I think you will find that you get better performance and battery life with the Nand version of android as opposed to the SD version.
Thank you guys
Thank you Guys i never been happier with my HTC HD2 working with NAND Android it's awesome
