[Q] Restoring to Factory Settings - HD2 General

Hey guys,
So my HD2 recently started having the same issue a lot of you guys are having with the touchscreen just dying or being very unreliable. This past week I've had trouble getting past the lock screen and today it takes me half an hour to a full hour of attempts to make it past the lock. Once I do, however, the screen works fine until it's locked again.
I'm about two weeks away from warranty ending, so I want to get this bad boy sent in ASAP. A year ago I flashed a custom ROM onto the phone and haven't modified it until this morning when I installed MAGLDR 1.13 and NAND Android ROM. The new ROM worked great but didn't resolve the touchscreen issue at all.
What I want to do is completely restore the phone to how I bought it from T-Mobile US a year ago. I don't want the replacement voided because of the custom ROM, though it clearly has nothing to do with the error.
Not being very technically proficient with this stuff (aside form the dozens of hours I've spent reading up), what is the best way to go about this?
So far I tried doing a Hard Reset manually via the VolUpDown/EndCall button boot, but that just booted me into NANDroid after the reset. I tried downloading WinMo from the T-Mo site, but it's asking for a phone identification number I can't access because of the lack of touchscreen access.
Any help/advice you guys can offer would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can get the IMEI number from behind the battery to download the rom from t-mobile.
This was explained to me by another member here
Right click the ROM file you download from the T-mobile site and rename the .exe to a .zip and then you can explore the file to find the RUU_signed.nbh file. You want to copy the RUU_signed.nbh file to the root of your SD card (make sure it has been formated to FAT32) and rename the file to LEOIMG.nbh. then place the SD card in the HD2. Boot the HD2 imto bootloader and as soon as you see searching on the screen let the volume down button go. It should ask if you want to flash the imageand you will have to press the end button to confirm and it will flash the ROM.

jf1.5 to legitimate

hey there, before you yell at me to search hear me out.
i followed the tutorial to root my phone from the latest legit version of android. i installed jesesfrekes 1.5 version along with the radio(?) from htc. i figured i would bring it back to the stock version so i did some searching and found that most threads didnt say much but go search! well i did find some hints that people were saying to download the original rc29 dreimg.nbh and power on via camera and power button and go from there. the problem is that when i boot into the phone via camera button and power button, all i see are little androids on skateboards and SERIAL0, with no instructions or prompts to continue. can anyone help me out on what to do from here to get the stock firmware back, and everything back to factory?
thanks in advance!
if you don't see the image update screen before serial0, it means the file DREAIMG.nbh is not on your sdcard or the card is not properly formatted. also note that the whole linux system is published under GPL and Android is an open source project, so mods are strickly legitimate.
You plug in usb cable then hit back button from there. Then it should say fastboot instead of serial.
Two things:
Hey there,
If you want to go back to truly stock, you'll first want to replace your SPL with the stock one. Once you go back to unrooted, you won't be able to do this again without getting root back. So it has to be done first. Right now, you've got HardSPL, or Engineering SPL. Once you reflash back to the ugly rainbow original SPL, I have a feeling you've put the DREAIMG.nbh ZIP FILE on your SD card. Unlike other updates you do in recovery mode, YOU HAVE TO UNZIP THIS ZIP FILE first, and put the unzipped contents (the DREAIMG.nbh file ITSELF, around 95 MB or so) on the SD card. If you just download that zip and put it on there, it won't work.
Good luck.
Ricky
please excuse my ignorance when using the term legitimage, i just did not know what terms to use to accuretly point to what i needed to talk about.
anyways, i think the problem may be that the sd card was not formatted correctly, for the img file is definitly there. i am having a hard time formatting it via pc, since everything i right click on the drive in "my computer" and hit format, the pc says no drive found, and my phone claims "preparing sd card" also, i tried the format option on the phone itself, which apprently did not work.
So you rooted your phone, flashed spl then updated to 1.5?

i am putting the straight nbh file on there, and not the zip, it seems like my problem lies in formatting. and may i ask what you mean by replacing my spl? what is the importance of this, and if it is of upmost importance, how do i go about doing it?
thanks a bunch for the quick responses.

Unfortunately, I have had VERY LITTLE LUCK dealing with my G1 on Vista. Anything other than casually connecting it and transferring files casues the same types of headaches you're experiencing. Trying to scan the disk, trying to format it, fix errors, even eject the disk (safely remove) causes the phone to disconnect and/or Windows to claim not to be able to read it.
I'm not saying Vista and the G1 can't work together well, I'm just saying mine don't. --So I always use my XP machine whenever I try to do anything like that. Other than that, if you're sure you've unzipped your nbh file, sorry I can't be of much help.
after doing a little bit of research i guess i need to change the skateboard version of the spl to the gay pride one for 100percent original correct? how do i do this?
also i updated the radio(whatever that means ) from the HTC website, as per the tutorial. do i have to "downgrade" that as well?
my 2c:
the sdcard has to be formatted as fat32, not fat16. i never had luck with G1 and interfacing with a computer or doing anything like rooting a phone while the sdcard was fat16. works like a charm when its fat32 though.
i managed to get skateboard SPL to recognize my dream image.nbh by formatting the sd card on a windows xp as designdawg mentioned. now im trying to figure out if i need to downgrade the spl and radio, before i flash the dreamimage.nbh on there.

D'OH! It's too late, I think. I told you that on my first post. You must have missed it. In order to change your SPL, you have to be able to flash images signed with the test keys. You can no longer do that because you have RC29 with the stock recovery, which will only flash google-signed keys. The only way to go back to the original SPL is to re-root your phone now.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
oh no! you must have misunderstood, i have not gone back to RC29 yet, i am still on jf1.5 patiently waiting instructions here, haha

Oh. Gooood. Well, all you need to do is download the SPL file for the original, rename it update.zip, put it on your card, home+power to get to recovery mode, then ALT+S to flash your SPL back to original. Then you can use the original SPL (Camera+power) to flash back to RC29. RC29 will reset your radio and everything, so you'll be factory fresh at that point. I would throw an ALT+W in there somewhere to wipe it if I were you, or you can always do it after you've done RC29.
You're ready to go. (I just did all this last night myself).
excuse me if this is a dumb question, but where can i download the original spl? i would search for it but im not exactly sure what to search hah. thanks a lot for helping me out once again. also, would it be okay to alt+w right before i do the update.zip for the original spl?
In case anyone is following and still having trouble with this:
1. Download the Original SPL By downloading G1OrigBootloader_nocheck.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455860
2. Rename to update.zip and flash via normal Home+Power Method
3. Download Original RC29 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480)
4. Unzip .nbh file and place in the root of your newly formatted card.
5. Boot with Camera+Power and follow the steps given onscreen to install
6. Don't enjoy losing root : (
EDIT: In order to get to the current build you have to update in steps so after upgrading to RC29 upgrade to RC30 and then to RC33 via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=479571)
PS I had App2SD for a long time so the SPL would look for my image in the EXT3 partition and then quit when it couldnt find it. So I ended up having to format it completely to FAT32 and then it worked.
Hope this helps

tmo uk - get your stock rom from 'leo official roms thread' first post first link
either:-
1 - right click the stock rom .exe, choose extract here. This will give several files, one of which is ruu_signed.nbh.
2 - rename ruu_signed.nbh to leoimg.nbh and copy to fat32 sd card
3 - power off, power on with vol down pressed to enter bootloader, which will automatically detect the leoimg and flash the phone, resetting the rom, the radio and the spl back to stock.
Job done
OR
1 - run the stock .exe file over usb, which will reset the rom and the radio back to stock
2 - run hspl2 on the PC and choose 1.42.0000. This is the stock spl.
Job Done.

Issue with my HD2

Hey so i just picked up an hd2 on craigslist. when the seller handed my the phone he showed me the phone working and then did a hard reset so i thought nothing of it and took the phone while it was resetting. then while waiting for it to boot i noticed it was taking quite a while so i took out the battery and let it reboot, it turned on then froze on the homescreen. i've tried several hard resets and have gotten the phone to the point where it works but only after putting in a removing the battery several times and the phone sticking on the "stick together" logo. I was going to try to do the newest tmobile update on the phone using the one available on their website but now i have an issue plugging the phone into the computer or wall adapter as it will make the phone freeze and ill have to go back through my removing the battery 5 times process. is this some sort of common issue with a common fix or should i take the phone to tmobile or htc and see what they can do for me. i dont have a receipt as a purchased the phone on craigslist so im not sure tmobile will do anything for me.
Edit: i can now connect my phone to the pc i'm trying to update to 2.13.531.1 but i got to 8% but the update froze there and the phone currently has no image version. I'm using windows 7 ultimate and ive tried to run as administrator and with xp service pack 3 compatibility.

can someone also help me figure out how to get the ruu.nbh file off this rom and how big it should be so i can try to flash it from the sd card. thanks

no i have not run hard spl so i can only install a stock rom a suppose. the exe gets stuck at 8%, i have no idea where the right nbh file is. i read somewhere when you run the exe it installs the nbh in a temp folder but im not sure i found the right one. ive also downloaded task29 and tried to run as admin but it doesnt do anything just goes to the htc install screen and stays at 0% Getting frustrating it was working fine actually before i tried to install the new tmobile software update. ive read that task29 gets rid of extra leftovers of other roms and might help the exe finish up on the phone and get past that 8% wall but it doesnt seem to be working for me
right click the stock exe file choose extract here, will give 9 or so files, one of them is about 200meg and is called ruu_signed.nbh that's the file you want.
randomly flashing nbh files that you don't know what they are, that's about the stupidest thing you can do...... you deserve a brick for being an idiot.

lol thank you for the words of encouragement, so i've extracted the .nbh file its 268mb, renamed it to leoimg.nbh tried the update from the sd card and it fails at the radio says, update terminated, update FAIL. any idea where to go from here?
Edit: i've run hspl3 on the phone is boot loader mode and have also run task29 from doloop but still get the same error with the tmobile file. 8% using the exe and FAIL trying to flash from the sd card
heh you're welcome. (i was harsh to make the point,,, if you found a random bottle of liquid that said petrol on it, you wouldn't put it in your car till you were sure it was petrol, right?)
as to why it failed, i'm not sure, i think i'd probably hspl3, choose 2.08.hspl, then try flash a radio on its own (see the tmous radio thread) because it could be a bad radio.
just please confirm the exact filename of the .exe you extracted ruu_signed from?

The first exe file, which got to 8 percent then went red and failed was
T-Mobile_HD2_MR_Software_2.13.531.1
After hspl3 and using task29 i tried flashing this exe which gets to 99% and fails
RUU_Leo_1_5_TMOUS_2.02.531.MASD_S__Radio_Signed_15.29.50.07U_2.06.50.04_TeleNav-5.5.42
that second one, did you flash from sd card? cos its a manufacturing test rom, and if so then you may now be stuck with a test spl of 2.02, and if so things just got a heap worse,,,
go into bootloader and tell me what it says next to spl

i tried flashing using the .exe method in bootloader mode. next to spl it reads -2.08.hspl 8g XE
it now says

ah ok, good.
so, it seems to be the radio causing the error, so since you have hspl installed, why not try a custom rom? they don't include a radio, so it may bypass the problem.

Which do you suggest, i bought the phone so that i could ultimately install android on it. but it seems i'd be lucky to even have wm running on the thing
Edit. just tried kumars classic rom, renamed to leoimg tried running off the sd card, The update finishes successfully but after i hit the reset button on the back of the phone i just see the tmobile stick together logo and the phone doesnt boot. Do a lot of people struggle with the hd2s or do i just have a bad example here?
well unfortunately i think you may have a dud. its the radio that is preventing it from booting.
it could be the radio from that test rom, it could be something else (but still the radio)
options...
its still under warranty, speak to t mobile and/or htc, but don't mention flashing and be sure to remove hspl if you do send it back. (run hspl3, choose 2.08.0000, that's stock)
or
look on here for a user called xmoo, he knows a lot about this sort of problem, (im just good with regular flashing issues)
im having the same issue so if you believe its the radio will installing different radio maybe fix the problem?
i;ve tried installing a new radio from the sd card. it goes red and fails
It sounds like a hardware issue at this point. I'm willing to bet you fried something when you pulled the battery in the middle of the master reset.
Hope thats something htc will cover. Phones on its way over

This happened to me awhile back, it was caused by a corrupt download. But it could be numerous things. Do you have a T-mobile US HD2? What ROM did you flash?
It could also be caused by flashing a ROM not designed for your phone. Thats how a lot of people get bricks. A little more info would help.
yes sir i have a TMO USA phone and i tried to use of KUMARS TMOUS C5 Premium.
So do you think that if I just Flash the phone with a ROM that works this will fix it?

First, make sure it wasn't just the task29 that you performed
Second, go into bootloader and try flashing Kumar's C5 again using a different method (from sd or activesync).
Third, try formatting your sd card to FAT32 if you're flashing from it.
If none of that works you can just try a different ROM or even a stock shipped ROM.

Yeah that exact same thing happened to me awhile back. I guess it was caused by a corrupt download or something of that sort. All i did was go into bootloader and flashed a different ROM from the SD that i know for a fact works. After that, you will be fine.
Just use Mskip's guide
Flashing Via MicroSD Card
NOTE (PLEASE READ): If you flash a Stock Rom via microSD Card then it will overwrite your HardSPL with a stock SPL included in the nbh file. If you flash a v2.01 or later Rom (with SPL2.*) you will NOT be able to reinstall HardSPL onto your device and could end up bricking it. This does not apply to custom roms as they do not include an SPL. BE CAREFUL!!
1. Make sure your microSD is Formatted to fat32 (you dont have to delete all files but it is safer if you do)
2. Download your prefered Rom from the LEO Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your PC
3. Goto the Roms Folder and rename the .nbh file to LEOIMG.nbh
4. Copy the LEOIMG.nbh file to the root of your MicroSD Card
5. Plug the MicroSD Card into the phone
6. Reset the device while pressing the volume down button to enter the BootLoader screen, you will first see a tri-color screen with the phone and SPL Information at the top
7. Follow the On Screen instructions to start the update
8. After flash has completed, press the reset button with the stylus to reset the device.

So after you flash sometimes it will let you boot fully into the ROM? And everything works until it freezes again?

yes first boot up it goes fine, i test it out by doin 3 resets prob after the 3rd one it stops working it stays on the bootscreen for ages, then il do more resets and some times it will go through but after 10sec of being done it will freeze and have to repeat until it works again. this happens even when everything is on STOCK ive done task 29 flash via sd card through everything...
Try this?

Did you try reformatting the SD card, or trying a different SD? I personally have never done a Task29 Via SD, not even sure of the process, though I do one via Active Sync before every flash. Sounds like a defect in hardware, if not the SD, then the phone. Hope the replacement solves your issues, else look closely at the SD card.
Ok so I am so confused, when I flash the phone am i supposed to leave the SD card in the phone? If I just went and bought a new SD card will this fix it. I flashed the phone with a ROM that works and it works for a few days and then freezes then I have to start all over. What do I do this sucks. Is anyone in the Austin texas area that can help me?

[Q] New Rom help

So i have a pretty much newbie question. I figured out how to load a new rom on my tp2 I am currently using Energy Rom, rom date 3/15/10 with manila 2.520161332.0, radio version 4.4825.20. I am through at&t and i was wondering how i load the newest Energy rom and which one that is? maybe someone could post a link with it, if they have time. Also what do I do for steps as in for loading a new rom when i already have a burnt one on my tp2. Sorry such a newbie question hope I can get some help from experts, thank you.
Might want to look in the ROM Development subforum. The process is covered in detail there.

Thank you for the response, I already did my first flash from stock to energy rom dinik. question is do I have to do the hard spl again? I was reading about task 29 Do i do that to clear this current rom? Then load the new one? I guess my main question what steps do I follow to replace a out dated flashed custom rom?

Ah, that's a much more clear question. Hard SPL is permanent until you flash the stock one back for whatever reason. Basically, it'll stay there until you remove it yourself. task29 is a good idea to do between ROM flashings. It clears out and formats the internal memory. It prevents the device from retaining traces of the old ROM when you flash the new one. Use the order listed below.
1. back up any important data and reboot into bootloader (hold voldown while pressing reset)
2. run task29
3. flash new ROM
4. hard reset (hold talk/send and end while pressing power button)
5. set up the new device
The hard reset is kind of optional, but I do it anyway since I'm kind of OCD like that.

thank you very much this should help just a couple questions (sorry I was very cautious when flashing my first rom as well, because I didn't want to screw anything up).
1. If i dont wanna save any data besides whats on my sim and sd card just remove both before starting any of the 5 steps?
2. Are there any roms with cookie 2.0?
3. In step one you say reboot into bootloader (hold volume down while pushing reset, which button is reset?
4. Task 29 I jus run on my comuter i take it while synced?
Sorry I'm very cautious lol if you cant tell, just want to make sure I dont mess anything up.
Thank you for your help I feel about half way ready to attempt again lol.

All of these questions could have been answered if you read some of the threads available in the ROM development area. You're lucky I'm feeling generous today.
1. Removing the SIM and SD is optional. I never do, but some people swear by it. It's up to you whether you do or not.
2. There are lots of them. Have a look around. You could always install it over an older CHT version or onto a ROM without CHT at all.
3. There should be a tiny reset button hole that your stylus will fit into on the right side of the device under the battery cover. If you have a T-Mobile device, it's right next to the noise-canceling mic on the left side. You should already be in bootloader when you flash anything, including task29.
4. task29 has two files. The *.nbh file can be anything at all. It makes no difference. The *exe that comes with the download is what does the formatting. You should already be in the bootloader before doing this. It will flash the *.nbh file onto the device. When it is finished, it runs the format command from the .exe and formats the device. Once the percentage gets to 100%, it will hang for a moment while the task29 command is running. It takes about 10 seconds while it says 100% on the screen. During this time, hold down the voldown button until it reboots. Once you get back to the bootloader, go ahead and flash your next ROM.
Once you get the hang of it, the whole process shouldn't take you more than about 15 minutes or so. Setting everything back up after a flash is what is so time-consuming. Most ROMs come with some form of an auto-install program designed to install programs and import other data automatically. Read the thread of whichever ROM you choose before diving into it.
Don't ask us for our opinions on which ROM you get either. That's like asking which music you should listen to. Everyone likes different things. Just keep flashing ROMs until you find one you like. Otherwise, you can find hundreds of threads from other users asking "Which ROM should I choose" all over the forum.
Ok. sounds pretty easy, thank you for being so generous and as I was browsing I found a link with how to run the task 29 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5845908&postcount=1 from what i gather on this just sync and run the .exe file and that should take me to the bootloader screen? and the after its done run my .nbh file from my custom rom and should be the end besides setting up the rom? I've seen to many people ask which rom is best and seen the responses people have given them so I know better to ask lol. Thank you once again, I greatly appreciate it.

It sounds like you've got it. Just don't use the customromruu.exe file from the task29 to flash anything other than the nbh that comes with it. It will erase anything it flashes to the internal memory right after flashing it. Any other ruu.exe file is interchangeable for anything else, though.
I downloaded the task 29 zip folder and unzipped it and got a file "task 29 provided by doloop" take it that is what I'm suppose to use? One last question for you, on this sight how do you find the latest version of a rom?

They must have changed the format of the task29 tool. Either that or I've got an older version. Mine's wrapped up nicely in one simple *.exe file. If you downloaded the *.zip from the first post of the task29 thread, then just double click on ROMUpdateUtility.exe to begin the process. Where did you download your file from? Provide a link so I can better answer your question.
The latest version of a ROM is normally on the first page somewhere. It varies by chef, however. Some put links as a reply in the thread, so it might be a ways back. Check the first page of posts first. If you don't find it there, ask on the thread. Be sure to read the rules and FAQs of the ROM before posting questions.
The best advice I can give you is to always search first before posting questions. Take the time to show other members that their time is no less valuable than your own, and most members will bend over backward to help you out. If you post without searching or doing work for yourself, it tells other members that your time means more than theirs, and you are more likely to get flamed rather than helped.

Extract and drop the attached file into a folder with that *.exe, and you'll be all set. This file is basically just a tiny OS that it will flash before hand. As I said, once the process gets to 100%, it will hang there for about 10 seconds or so while it formats the memory. It will erase what this file writes anyway. I think the *.nbh from the first post is a HTC boot screen file. That will change the first boot screen you see when the device powers on and you see the red letters at the bottom left of the screen. I don't need to change my boot screen, so I use this one, since the task29 will wipe it out right after, leaving no trace of anything being flashed.
Thank you very much, quick question while your here, got my rom downloaded after the task 29 do i run the .nbh file or rhodium software upgrade? Can't say thanks enough
with the file you gave me after i extraxt with 7 zip it says windows cannot recognize this file? is it cause i have windows 7?

You don't run that file. Put the *.exe into a folder with the*.nbh file I just gave you. You run then double click on the *.exe to begin the task29 process. The *.nbh is a required file. I don't know if it is included in the one you downloaded or not.
On second thought, here are the task29 file I use. Extract to a folder, run the *.exe, be happy, in that order.
Got it work with the two files custom ruu and the .nbh just click the custom ruu one and start from there? Sorry for being a birden.

Make sure the device is connected via ActiveSync, or put it into bootloader and make sure it says USB at the bottom of the screen. After you confirm one of these two scenarios, run the*.exe. Once it gets to 100%, hold the voldown button and allow it to boot back into the bootloader. From there, wait for USB to show at the bottom, and begin flashing the new ROM. I honestly don't think I can make it clearer than this. I hope you get it working.
You've made it very simple i just got to the bootloader screen thank you, it says usb, but when i try to run the custum ruu nothing happens

I assume you meant the *.exe is giving you the message. Turn off antivirus software, and run the file as administrator.
