Thanks for this. I have been awaiting their review on the Xoom since they announced they were going to be doing an exhaustive one.
Only about halfway through, but I noticed something interesting. When discussing the browser and how most sites are still displaying the mobile version, he seemed to not have done any further searching as if he had, they probably would have found the "about:debug" fix. While I've heard that it isn't a persistent change, it still works out when in a pinch. Just thought it was odd they weren't aware/didn't do further searching on the issue.
Hm. So far this seems to be one of the better reviews out there (outside of the 10 pages of clicking...). Thanks for this.
Very good review. Ars Technica is one of the best Tech Blogs out there, and very rarely do their writers come across as fanboys of one OS or another. This review really confirmed to me that although the Xoom is a great start, it will likely be summer before I purchase an Android tablet to keep (mainly I'm waiting on flash, lower prices, microSD fixed, and more Honeycomb apps). I am very much in support of Honeycomb, but it's not time for me to buy yet.

I started reading this review and I can't help to notice they say 7 hours of mixed use. I have had email notifications pushing, wifi on the whole time, and got 20 hours @ 50% battery left. This is leaving it on over night and playing games and messing with it for at least 3-4 hours straight, as well as syncing/transferring files, playing games like Words with Friends, etc. So I am very skeptical about this 14 hours of standby time. I got the device to 25 hours and it was still well over 30-35%.

That's the issue with discussion on battery life. Unless it's explicitly mentioned what was done, when and for how long, it's hard to gauge exactly could be considered "intensive use" and look at battery life that way.
Ars rocks. Hopefully google will speed things up a bit in regards to the current disadvantages of the Xoom. Thus far, most of them can be cleaned up with a couple of patches. Hopefully it happens soon.

Before charging mine for the second time yesterday when it was around 18%, I had reached 26-27 hours of use. This is after I played, oh I don't know, an hour of Gun Bros, an hour (if not more) of Hex Defense (I think that's what it's called), push notifications on from, gmail, Twitter, fb, browsing, etc. I literally didn't put it down for at least 4 hours straight at one point. The screen was on auto/a third brightness. I even listened to an entire album, so around an hour of music playing.
I really don't see how anyone can have the audacity to say it's standby doesn't last for at least 24 hours.
Did someone get an LTE equipped version that we don't know about? Otherwise I just don't see how that's possible.

Same here, at 32% battery I was at 29 hrs of use. And this was after nonstop usuage. It was a new toy and I just played around on it for hours. Battery is definitely solid.

So apparently Moto has stumbled across something here - an Android device that can be used AND last longer than 24 hours without a problem!
Now if only every device could follow in its footsteps... Sure, the battery is bigger than a phone, but so is the screen, not to mention all of the stuff crammed in it (like a barometer I have no idea how to use yet).

It's the first device running Honeycomb. Even with that said, I haven't had any crashes or freezes. It's running great for me.

While frustrating it's understandable. The iPad has a proprietary power adapter and doesn't charge through USB. Plus the Xoom charges pretty quick

I disagree, I love the built in e-mail client. Regardless their are plenty of other options for Android, and will hopefully be built new for Xoom/Honeycomb.

Haven't had any problems yet.
The browser issue is quite dissapoiting to me (as a web developer). I hoped for a full webkit browser with extensions. Maybe Firefox4 for Android will be better?

Extensions would be nice, and I can't believe Google still hasnt fixed typing lag in the browser yet (on some sites)
While the charger on the Ipad is "proprietary", its the same charger that is used on other devices of theirs. Also the Ipad will charge from USB, but very slowly.
I'm disappointed in their review. It's not very good, and seems in some spots like they're looking for something critical to talk about, like the default email client: yeah, it's not great, but it's been not-great for a while now, and isn't a Xoom-specific issue; they talk about future-proofing issues with browser rendering, correctly stress that it's not a big deal right now, but then make a big deal of it in the conclusion.
The review's written like the author doesn't really care about the device. Engadget's review seems a lot more balanced compared to this one.
(PS. Lots of reviews keep talking about the lack of tablet apps. Wasn't this _exactly_ the same issue when the iPad 1 came out?)

I think you mean 2000 apps that were compatible with the iPad in full-screen. Google made the mistake of labeling the Tablet section in the Market as Tablet Apps. They have since corrected it to be Featured Tablet Apps. Most Android apps work fine on the Xoom, even if they don't support the new Honeycomb UI guidelines. Since Apple just threw their existing UI onto a larger device, there isn't really a comparison here.
Got the 16 gb transformer (black seal) and dock (green seal) yesterday at best buy. Here's my thoughts after 24 hrs of use:
1) Form, build and quality are fine, however I think the Sammy 10.1 clearly wins this category.
2) Docking is a bit of a hassel at first but not bad once used to it.
3) This tab overall is sluggish and unrefined. Playing ANY flash video is a joke. HBO GO is not supported, and trying to play it in a desktop browser (dolphin hd) won't work as flash is broken on the TF. In other words, this tab barely works for my normal web usage.
4) Typing lag in browsers is beyond a joke. It's basically unusable. I am typing this on my TF with keyboard dock and it is taking forever. Google shoud be embarrased to release an OS and tab touted so highly that is basically unusuable if one wants to actually ENTER TEXT at all.
5) Most everthing else so far is fine. I use a Droid X (rooted, OC'd) and it is a ten times better experience. Honeycomb and Asus have a lot of refining to do on this tab.
Normally my posts and thoughts would be much more well put but I am stopping here as there is no way my brain can think as slow as this thing enters text in browsers. Chances are high that I will be returning this tab before my 14 day return window at best buy. I may give the Sammy 10.1 a try as most of these issues are not evident, or not as bad on that unit. I liked it better overall anyway except for the lack of a simple micro sd card slot.

Here I am able to type a reply via Opera mini with very little input lag in the browser. Of course, Opera mini is not the full browser but I guess it's at least useable.
To further my thoughts, the TF is a sexy unit with the keyboard dock making this into what looks like a netbook killer. My belief is that this dockable form factor will continue to be very popular, and it is the main reason i chose this over the Sammy 10.1, which also has a keyboard dock, but not one nearly as convenient nor one with a battery in the dock.
Other things I will mention is that I do have some bleeding on the left edge and bottom of the display. This to me I could overlook as it is only really noticeable in certain low light situations. However, it really isn't something that should be acceptable. The speakers I find adequate. Loading apps via market or sideloading via micro sd has been a breeze. Battery life has seemed very good - too good as I am at almost 5 hours unplugged (full charge on both dock and tab) and it is somehow showing 99% left! Not possible..... but if true I will ecstatic.
I should mention that I have installed the firmware upgrade that asus pushed to my unit for the dock, however I have not been able to force-push the 3.1 update so I am still on 3.01. However, from reading this and several other TF forums I do not think the main issues with this unit (or honeycomb on this unit) have been addressed with 3.1. Who knows if or when the main issues will be addressed successfully. If Asus is reading these forums hopefully they will realize that these issues are extreme enough to drive customers to other companies products. I have had an Asus laptop (g73jh) and it had some inherent keyboard issues that never were fixed and I ended up selling that laptop because of it. I will give this unit the 14 days I have to return to best buy, but I have doubts these problems are addessed by then. I hope they are because this tab has the potential to be very nice otherwise.

I have not yet, and probably will soon. I have been trying to force-push the update to the unit but so far no luck. I would also like to root, and will probably use the true-root version of 3.1, athough I do not think that wil have any positive effect on the problems plaguing it currently. I do use several root apps though and if I keep the unit I will definitely root it.
I've never had problems with flash (I updated to 3.1 like an hour after I opened the box).
I use flash all the time and do not have any major issues, I use dolphin HD and it works fine including typing.
Even before the update to 3.1,it was not as bad as the OP has mentioned with the exception of the typing lag.
To say you have no lag with flash I don't believe, everybody does, every tablet that has flash capability has some lag with flash, I've used a few so I know. The TF especially has lag with flash video because it was found the it's not using hardware decoding so it's very choppy. This should be easily fixed with an update soon hopefully by either Asus or Adobe whichever one is the cause.
The lag is there for me only when in full-screen mode. When you play flash in a window - there's no lag. As soon as you go 720p full screen - lag ensues.
Its certainly encouraging to hear some feedback from people who dont seem to be having much for flash or browser typing issues. In reading several different forums it is definitely a problem that quite a few are having however. At least I am able to type at a somewhat reasonable speed to what it should be using Opera Mini. That to me is still a bandaid fix to the problem however. I will be updating to 3.1 tomorrow so I will report on if there are any positive changes after that.
On a very positive note, the battery life is looking to be amazing IF the battery percentage in the notification bar is at all accurate. After a little over 8 hours I am still at 80%, have been docked almost the entire time. Plenty of use during that time including web browsing, download and installs and quite a bit of game playing. Going to let it run almost to zero to see how long this thing will go.

I experience bad flash in ever browser I have tried, and when testing speeds via youtube, it was in the single digits. Certainly strange that some have units that perform so much better than others in this area.

It's not that some units perform better, they don't, it's just everybody's perception of smooth/choppy is their own so in some people's eyes they don't have a problem with it so it's fine, or they could just not have actually tried 720P+ flash videos in a browser
I'm not saying videos are all unplayable, but 720P+ flash videos in the browsers are choppy for everybody, HTML5 ones are fine, and this is because apparently flash video isn't using hardware decoding but should be. 720P videos in the Youtube app or playing from the transformer with video players works great. I think we will eventually see a fix for htis, hopefully sooner than later.

Anyone with a Transformer has a poor flash experience. Playing a video below 360p is perfect. If anyone says they have no lag with flash on the T101 has an awful sense of frames per second.

Im going to have to disagree with you here. Flash is so bad on my unit, and apparently on others TF's that something more than just perception differences is going on imho. BTW, I was getting low single digits on 360p setting on the youtube test. Literally like watching a very slow picture flip book, and that is being quite generous to be honest. Flash is broken on the TF - at least MY TF, and from the sounds of it for others also.
On a good note, I am still at over 50% on my battery levels, and I have been unpluggd for 13 hours now. It did sit idle for maybe 4 or 5 hours during that time, but was also used heavily while on. I
believe that the battery meter in the notification bar does not start to clock down until most of the battery has been used in the dock. At least that's my theory for why it took so long for the meter to even dip below 100%. So on my unit, I do not think the dock is draining extra when closed.
I go days without charging with very light usage. Maybe 1-2 hours per day. My TF will go at least 2 days without charging. I'm on Prime 1.5 (Android 3.1).
I've not had lag (but I use dolphin hd). I did have trouble with the included youtube app. It tended to freeze if I pause, but I haven't had trouble with youtube in dolphin.

I run magnus' custom rom and installed the hulufied version of flash 10.3 and i use my stock browser(chrome)to watch hulu and it plays just fine,but in full screen mode its has very little lag,but of course i have my tab set to 140000GHZ,which makes it play smoother.Overall after 7 days of having this tab,i'm very happy with it,no returns here,this thing has alot of future possibilities.
About flash videos :
Youtube with desktop user agent 720p => LAG LAG LAG even on 480p
Youtube with tablet user agent => youtube tablet mobile website form factor => 1080p LAGLESS
So use tablet user agent on youtube and it plays fine, dunno why but whatever.

I am using the tablet user agent too, dolphin HD browser and don't seem to have much trouble with flash so I think epicfallguy has got a very good point here.
The user agent for those who don't know can be selected from your browser settings.
Hi guys. I just bought the Acer Iconia and wanted to give a few of my initial thoughts.
First thing I noticed after performing all the updates was the lag. After exiting applications, it takes a little while for the icons to re-appear on the homescreen. I haven't added any besides the default. Also, when scrolling with the browser, it tends to render in square blocks.
Battery life..I've read reviews that it goes up to 8 hours while others say it lasts between 4-5 hours, and others say 6 hours. I understand that what we do varies, and the battery needs to be calibrated. After having it on for 3 hours and playing FieldRunners for 45 min (the rest of the time it was idle with all wireless connections off), I'm at 75% remaining. That's pretty crummy. Not even a calibration will improve it THAT much.
Also, when viewing a white background, you can see every "box" or pixel. Goodness, that's pretty frickin' bad. I'm not expecting any ridiculous "retina display" here but this is just a cheap panel.
I went into Staples to compare it to the Galaxy Tab and Xoom, and I see why Iconia is priced $100 less.
So, serious question. Why all the love for this thing?

With 14 posts, maybe you shouldn't comment. And I can't imagine a troll would actually take the time to write up a full post. What a waste of time that'd be.
I genuinely want to know. Perhaps there's something I'm missing. I want to love it because for $299 (after the Staples $100 off tablets coupon) it might not be a bad deal even with my complaints. But for those who actually spent the full $400, what do you actually like about it?
If you wanna go to staples n pay $300 (not $100!) For extra bulk and a non functioning micro SD, or for a device that doesnt even have a micro sd, USB, or HDMI, go for it. If you feel like a thin piece of plastic is a better investment than stainless steel, that's your money. But don't polute our forums with a "grass is greener" thread. You dont like the Iconia cuz it has the same battery as every other device (the only difference is some companies lie more in their specs- I've tested them all, they are all about the same) or cuz you can see pixels on a white screen, go somewhere else.
It's $100 OFF, making it $299 as I posted above. Read the post and learn to write full words in english. Good lord, tough to get a real answer out of babies.
Don't be too hurt if people knock the device. I'm allowed to call it like I see it, and the reason I posted is so someone can point out the actual good parts of the device (besides USB port).

For me it was the ports it offered. If the galaxy offered a micro SD I probabally would have bought it. The Acer on the other hand offers a lot of ports, which I found very fun. On the Xoom issue the Acer actually out performs it on display as thy have the same one but Acer codes it better. That has been proven in tests.
To break it down it was the price and the ports. The graphics are fine, watched The Green Hornet on this last night and I was satisfied with the performance. But to tell the truth I'm not a graphics whore.
I looked and played with all of these devices and I stick with my decision to buy the Acer.

My slight trolling aside, I agree with Torisen. The screen is better than most devices, albeit topped by the Galaxy. I find the extra ports and functionality a major deal breaker for me, as well as the price difference vs what you get with the galaxy (to me the xoom was never even a question, there is a reason google views it as a flop.) Also, I'm personally a fan of.the stainless chassis, both in appearance and functionality. As for the lag, a real world test of the galaxy provided similar results due to the bloated Samsung ui. Another key advantage is the near stock system, free of bloatware. After weighing all of my options, I am very happy with my iconia true, their whole update process was screwy, but they seemed to have cleared it up a little (for instance at least most everyone got the 4.010.13 update at the same time!) In yhe end, if youre not happy with it, it is a ffree market, get a different one.

Sorry, but I tend to agree at least a little with Strider_mt2k because I don't understand posts like this. If I did not like a $300 device that I purchased, I wouldn't criticized it on the dedicated forum for that device, and then expect strangers to convince me to keep it.
My "love" for this tablet is definitely not going to do anything towards negating your disdain for it. Technology life is too short to keep a device that so obviously disappoints you. Return it and get a tablet that you want.

I use about 12 hours straight my tablet, wifi constantly open, reading ebook, playing games (a little), going internet....
but I charge my tablet every 1.5 day or 2 days sometimes... no I do not use my tablet every 2 minutes
so far with GPS, full brightness, Sygic navigator... about 5hrs++ wich is nice... since I do not drive that long, and I don't need the navigator 5 hours in a row.
playing games 3D . 6hrs ++
playing normal games (angry bird) 8hrs...
Charge the tablet until 100% do not overnight, let the battery drain until 5% oftenly. that's how I use my tablet.
I do not use OVERCLOCK or else. when I make those feedback
Go get an iPad 2 then and stop whining. Oh wait... the display still sucks on an iPad. At least you get a great range of connectivity with the Iconia.
i work at staples, i have had the time to play with all the tablets, i personally recommend the Acer over all of them, even to my customers
the 100 dollar coupons kill our stores sale figures, but i used one and bought the Acer.
i do not regret it one bit, i love my acer. you shouldnt have your face that close to the screen to see the pixels, if you do need to, you need to get glasses

I don't have such issues, maybe you've got a defect one?
Battery life..I've read reviews that it goes up to 8 hours while others say it lasts between 4-5 hours, and others say 6 hours. I understand that what we do varies, and the battery needs to be calibrated. After having it on for 3 hours and playing FieldRunners for 45 min (the rest of the time it was idle with all wireless connections off), I'm at 75% remaining. That's pretty crummy. Not even a calibration will improve it THAT much.

Well, how much do you really expect it to last when playing games? If you're claiming it's "crummy" then obviously you think some other tablet does a lot better, but.. well, so far I ain't seeing one. They all last more-or-less the same.
Besides... I don't play games on my tablet, but it's on for 3rd day in the row at the moment. I have WIFI on 24/7, I do some web browsing, reading comics etc. and it still has over 50% battery left. That ain't something I personally would call "crummy."
Also, when viewing a white background, you can see every "box" or pixel. Goodness, that's pretty frickin' bad. I'm not expecting any ridiculous "retina display" here but this is just a cheap panel.

Those aren't pixels! You're seeing the grid used for touch-input. You're mixing the two concepts!
As for the grid: yes, it is sometimes visible. I personally don't get bothered by it since it isn't as clearly visible as you make it out to be. But I can understand if some others are bothered by it. It is even mentioned in all the better reviews that the grid can be seen easier than on other tablets. If the grid bothers you that much then go and get another tablet. But bear in mind that even iPads have the grid and atleast I can see it on those, too.
So, serious question. Why all the love for this thing?

Because it is great hardware for a great price.
I've had mine for 48 hours, and I have to say I'm loving it. I did take into consideration the $100 off, and getting this device for $299. You can argue positives and negatives on devices of equal price, but for $299, the A500 is a bargain.
The two issues mentioned- display: yes, the transformer's display is brighter. BUT...I've read many, many posts over at the ASUS threads about light bleading. Further, about how the Transformer can "bend" a little due to plastic construction, and this in turn causes further problems. Still, I liked the TF...I was torn over between the two, so don't think I'm hating on ASUS here. But the display is about a 7.5-8/10 for me compared to the BEST displays I've seen. But its a 10/10 for $299.
Battery: I have only good things to say about battery life so far on mine. No, I don't play 3D games constantly, but compared to the many android phones I have had, I realize I'm not always thinking about having this plugged in just in case I'll need the battery power later.
The other points that were in the A500's favor were the aluminum as stated, full USB port (not a feature you should discount), mini usb port, etc. I can't imagine ONLY being able to transfer files via miniSD. That would be a pain.
Most of the other gripes I have are about Honeycomb...it's not up to competing directly yet with iPad, just a few bugs that keep it from going head to head right now. But that has nothing to do with the unit.
I got two A500's now by the way, and both seem to be working as advertised, they were better than I expected when I made the decision to buy them.

I love this baby... and I'm not new to my portable devices... with auto brightness and auto use i get all day battery... and that includes using it's USB port to charge my Moto Atrix when it needs it! I must admit tho mine was a bit laggy with te stock kernel, but that was an easy fix!
This may be a slightly different post, since most of the users are big fans or / and happy users of Asus Transformer, but hear me out. For haters of long post – a brief summary of my post: the honeymoon’s with my tablet over, considering what to do now…
About 3 months ago I’ve sold my trusty Asus EEE PC 701 to replace it with Transformer, which I currently own. This was done after careful consideration and study of my needs and available products at the time. When choosing a replacement for EEE PC, my priorities were (beginning with the most important):
1. Fast browsing (waiting for EEE PC to boot became a headache) and emailing.
2. Similar productivity capabilities (I mostly work in Google Docs environment with occasional editing of normal documents and spreadsheets)
3. Occasional movies (EEE PC couldn’t handle 720p)
4. Showing pictures to friends (rare occasions)
5. Games, when there’s no work in sight.
When considering a replacement, I took into the account other devices – a better netbook, a smartphone, a normal laptop and, of course, a tablet, which I eventually chose (Transformer + dock keyboard). The start was pretty nice, until I’ve experienced full “features” of Android Honeycomb…
1. Browsing is not what I expected. In PC’s most browsers work the same, render pages in the same fashion, offer similar capabilities. In Android, most browsers are like day and night in some areas. E.g. only in 1 of 5 browsers I tried I was able to move between cells in Google Spreadsheets with my keys on the keyboard (other browsers moved the scroll bar). I’ve constantly encounter(ed) sites that recognized my tablet as a phone, redirecting me to a low resolution version. And by the way – without internet (I’m using the version without 3G) it’s rather useless.
2. Enough to say that a tablet is not meant to be used for a document editing. It’s basically a pain in the arse. Polaris app is more a WYSIWYG html editor than a document app, “Documents to go” app is let’s say a bit expensive. I’ve also did not know how hard it is to use copy-paste mechanism. I do use this in my editing a lot.
3. Movies also are a pickle. While PC can decode almost any format (by choosing a right decoder), Android can’t offer such capabilities. I have 5 different players, which I use to decode movies. Till now I didn’t encounter any movie that can be played in all 5 players, usually 1-2 players (sometimes – none) can open the movie. Subtitles (I watch anime sometimes) are also a headache. Didn’t know that earlier.
4. Picture showing is, let’s say, ok. But only after one update when Gallery app started to act properly, i.e. show pictures in an ascending fashion (before that I had to scroll to the end of the gallery to start showing pictures from the start).
5. Games… Well, what I found out that I simply hate trivial / casual games and the market is full of them. Angry birds / fruit ninja entertained me for one day only.
To make things worse, Google still doesn’t offer a separate search for tabled optimized apps and, most importantly, the market does not offer capabilities of filtering crapware. I found out that there are websites, rating apps in a proper way, but this is still a nightmare.
After this, I’ve tried to search for answers to solve the mentioned problems, but it seems the Android platform is still very young and it will take some time for it to become mature in the software area. By that time the hardware will be different and my current tablet will be let’s say pretty much useless. So keeping it and waiting for a miracle (I’ve thought that Android 4.0 could be a solution) may be not a viable solution… Unless you’ll convince me otherwise.
Rants aside, I’m considering to sell the tablet and buy a smartphone (maybe a HTC Desire S ?). Of course I won’t be able to edit documents or have a big screen for movies, but I hope having a great time with phone optimized apps, blazing fast boot times, better internet availability (I mean 3G).
Your opinions and suggestions about the current situation are very welcome. For me, it's a hard (and maybe an expensive) decision.
P.S. I’ve also considered buying a Windows 7 tablet (which would suit my needs), but found out that the user interface is still VERY hard to control with touches. I’ve also thought about waiting for a Windows 8 tablet, but it seems it won’t be able to run x86 programs, meaning an Android-like situation with little availability of useful software.
No offense, but after reading your post carefully I decided any reply I have is futile. You got the transformer with the wrong attitude. You've been using it with the wrong attitude. And you've been expecting things with ALL the wrong attitude.
It's best that you stick with a win 7 netbook or notebook.
PS - I have not touched my laptop since April. Between my PC at home and my transformer on-the-go, I have no complaint whatsoever. I see your complaints comparable to the complaints of someone who got a motorcycle intending to use it like a car.

Thank you for an oppinion. Yes - my expectations were "something resembling a netbook with a hint of phone". But it's neither a phone, nor a netbook and the tasks I wanted it to do were very limited by the software, which I didn't take into account when considered buying a tablet...
i agree more or less. i owned a 701 too btw. i now own among others an eeepc 1015pem. but i use my transformer all the time. google editing is a bit awkward yes, especially with large docs, but google has his own application for that. it eases the pain a bit.
copy and paste, yes editing is not that easy. i own docs to go, but the user interface is not that intuitive. polaris seems to saves not always that good (it cant be opened with all others wordprocessors). open document format is not very easy to use.
but still i prefer transformer at work for all sort of reasons:
* battery, i can use the transformer (with dock) all day long, with no other hussle.
* it is cool
* boy is the transformer silent - i like that way more than i anticipated.
* the touchscreen, although not always that easy, i love it.
* being more in the cloud (dropbox with 50gb), gmail, and polaris/docs to go, calendar, google contacts, it all works together: fast and easy. i like that too.
* i like the looks, and the way the transformer feels.
* at work with dock, at home: mostly tablet: reading, viewing, surfing
btw i am used to use linux on my netbooks, win 7 moves like a snail.

I have to agree with GoodInte tions over there; which is ironic because the EeePC 1015PE Netbook that I havent touched since September, was bought in April .
For your needs Android is not effective, for me it is almost as effective as BSD or GNU/Linux; where you use gdocs I use programs that I can run in a Debian chroot or I use a PC, rather than try and use LibreOffice locally with X/VNC.

Yes.. exactly what Rumbleweed said. You said you bought this 3 months ago; then you got it around September, which was about 2 months after I got my transformer (if you got it right at the start). When I first got my tablet, I didn't look through any of the online stuff, but I did start about a week after getting it (to know how else I could improve it further, but I was pretty lucky as my B5 had no problems except for a slight creakiness on one side).
Anyway, by around 4.5 months ago, I already knew several points:
-browsing rendering had some issues, some of which was solved by hardware acceleration, etc. (although, I didn't really notice this as an issue until I looked online because my laptop is old and slower by far)
-document editing is a little flawed because typing lags behind the physical typing
-movies.. well, I saw lots of threads about not being able to play 720p except in Dice Player or something, but I don't really watch HD stuff often except maybe for tennis (btw, espn 360 worked perfectly and looked great for streaming)
-there are a lot of trivial games (I was disappointed with this one too, but I found the emulators soon after, so I haven't played much other trivial games except for the more addictive looking tower defense ones)
tl;dr: I don't understand how you didn't know this by the time you got it as you seem pretty thorough (as per your post). Good luck though, I wanted a Windows 7 tablet before in the past, but they're either expensive as hell or ugly looking as hell.. We just need Google and other tablet-making-companies to realize that tablets are for more than entertainment.

Honestly, why not root and stick Ubuntu on there? I realize this would destroy the Android flavor, but that's obviously not what you're looking for.
Specifically:
1. How is not having 3G any different from your EEE PC with wifi? If you wanted the TF with 3G, there's a 3G version. Otherwise, I'm sure your mobile carrier will happily sell you a hotspot device and plan.
2. Do you have the dock? Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+X all work for me on the dock. As for an office suite, how about using GDocs? I know it's not as slick as MS Office or LibreOffice, but it's pretty functional.
3. Yeah, I've found that anime can be something of a pain at 720p and decoders aren't brilliant on Android. It's what happens when the majority of the population uses iTunes, Netflix and Hulu for their media, manufacturers get lazy. I really wish VLC would come to Android, with proper codec support (especially with ICS' per-app hardware acceleration capabilities).
4. You know there are non-Gallery photo viewer apps, right? That's the beauty of Android, EVERYTHING (especially if you have root ) can be replaced.
5. Have you looked at the TegraZone? Or some websites for game reviews? It's honestly like trying to find a game for PC, there's a lot of crap to wade through, even in non-casual games.

Have you tried using Polaris Office with GDocs syncing? I know Polaris has some Google Docs support. Does the Android app for Google Docs work at all for you? As for the internet comment, how was your Eee PC any different? The TF and PC are the same in that regard. This isn't a Chromebook or anything...

I've had no issues with media playback since Dice Player came out. It handles all of my 720p or smaller video no problem. Even scenes that were always an absolute ***** on my tablet, like high bitrate Big Bang Theory intro (that always raped it) run great in Dice.

I'd say better than okay, I love how it syncs pictures between all of my devices with Picasa.

So keep looking. There are plenty of pretty featured RPGs. Go look at Gameloft games. Most of them are kinda crappy, but definitely more than angry birds.

Uhh.. just because Tegra 3 is coming out doesn't make tegra 2 any worse... the TF 1 is still amazing hardware.

You don't currently have a smartphone? I'm far more productive with both. It's easy to pull out the phone for 5 minutes and check my email, read news, etc, but as soon as I need to reply to a client, the phone is absolutely useless and I pull out the TF. I tether my TF to my phone for 3G/4G anywhere. If I need to open a large PDF, spreadsheet, ppt, etc it's a pain to do it on the phone, but so much better on a tablet. Ebooks are also great on the TF, as is videos.
Other pros: super thin, battery life is simply *amazing* (I can be on it for 14 hours a day and it doesn't need a charge), quiet, no heat, great audio output for music/video with voodoo sound, touchscreen that lets me take complex math notes that would be hard to type quickly, allows me to draw out theories and ideas anywhere I am (I used this all the time for solving puzzles in video games, working out the answers to the google nexus twitter challenges), plus it turns into a freaking TABLET when you disconnect it (call it a gimmick all you want, it's still badass).

By the silimilar time I did not know about:
1. Google market search (how it's hard to find a decent app or a tablet optimized app)
2. Copy paste issues (ctrl+c / ctrl+v is STILL not supported in many apps)
3. Video playback. It's rather annoying to use ~5 video players. 720p by itself is not an issue. Almost all players support native (hadware) decoding. I had more problems trying to open lower resolution movies in, I presume, less common containers / codecs.
4. Page rendering in browsing. I mean that different browsers may render the same page differently. This was an issue in pc world loooong time ago and it's now almost non-existent.

Didn't know about Polaris GDocs support, thanks. It works rather how I expect it to work... Speaking about Google Docs - the most common task I do is writing grades to studens in a spreadsheet. In normal PC's, you click a cell, write something, click on another. In Google docs (and most browsers I tried on Android, except one, that is REALLY slow) you click a cell, edit it and must press "SUMBIT". It's a big setback, when you consider larger amounts of editing.

I use that player too. Lots of unopened files, like with other players. Again, it's not about the smoothness of the playback, it's about supporting different codecs / containers.

I thought about owning both of them. Maybe it's the solution I'm looking for, but now it seems that phone may replace most of the tablet functions.

I have to say, i bought the TF with the premise of getting a tablet that was at least as good as an iPad, without paying Apple Tax. After three months, I am also quite disappointed with the tablet.
I think what a lot of members on this specific website seem to forget, is that many people want to buy a tablet to just use, not to have to tweak and hack to get it to work.
I still cannot play live streamed 30fps 480p flash videos without juddering.
Apps (especially games) for Android simply are not up to the same quality as iOS - this is obviously due to developers not bothering with the platform. And compatibility issues is probably the biggest joke I have ever seen. Even Windows doesn't have that problem.
My own opinion is that HC was simply developed quickly to try and compete with tablet iOS, and was rushed out. I don't know how much of a difference ICS will make - that remains to be seen.
My biggest issue however, is as I said earlier. While I and most people on this website don't mind tinkering and tweaking with their tablet, the vast majority of customers looking for a tablet want it to just work - and HC doesn't. And the hard truth is, iOS does. Except flash, obviously.

Recheck the title of this website. XDA Developers. Kind of like buying a 1968 GTO based on a recommendation in Hot Rod magazine then complaining that it doesn't get 35 mpg like a 2011 Prius. If you are looking for a " tap and play" tablet get an ipad.

hope nobody metioned it before, but why didn't you try installing ubuntu on your TF?
Well in my opinion its an even better os than windows and you get a bunch of free software with ease.
There is a thread over in the qa-forum from lilstevie giving you a pretty easy way to install ubuntu (as long as you got sbk1 at the moment)
It got no hardware graphics acceleration at this point but it didn't sound as you would need it.
Maybe this can save you a few bugs

A lot of your cons will be fixed with the Android 4.0 update.
When I first bought my transformer, I fully agreed with everything you said. I even wanted to sell it because I felt I had wasted my money. But I have to say it is growing on me, for two different reasons.
1) Problems are getting fixed. Better software is coming out or I'm finding solutions to the problems I had. Just the other day I updated flash and started using stock browser to for tudou.com (Chinese youtube), and the videos played flawlessly. Astro made a update recently that greatly improved my file management experience. Granted solving these problems/waiting for updates is still a pain in the ass. But progress is being made.
2) I'm finding things I can do on the transformer that I couldn't do on a laptop. I was taking short notes during an evaluation of one of our teachers. I used evernote with swype (no dock), and it was a great silent experience with no laptop screen blocking my view. Reading books on the transformer is also great. It even got me to start reading comic books, The Walking Dead is a freaking awesome series. I never would have known about were it not for the transformer. And pictures, I feel you on the backwards order thing. But you can't compare sharing pictures on the transformer with a laptop. It's so much better on the transformer.
I still agree that 99% of the games are just terrible. If they can get playstation emulation working a good bit better graphics wise, I'll be happy. Speaking of which, I need to check to see if there have been any recent improvements to the sixaxis app and the emulators.
I like the simplicity of the iPad with the complexity of Android. Minus HC. Not a fan. I have this and the OC Ipad. I like games like Madden 12 and the new NFS and Riptide. Lots of nice graphics. One thing that frustrates me is there are Tegra 3 games out that will not work on Tegra 2. And there is not a huge offering for T2. So Will that mean T2 games will be obsolete?
I find Polaris and Docs to Go are just fine for preparing reports and simple spreadsheets. The 16 X 9 screen is great for movies as well as the nice IPS screen on the Pad. I give the speaker quality to the ipad. Not a fan of the speakers on the Transformer.
Hardware wise, the Transformer blows the Ipad away. Better camera, more RAM, the dock, USB and the sdcard to add on. I think if you are creative then you are using a net book. Plus I can wireless print.
I don't think there is anything wrong with wishing for that perfectly fined tuned device and it will come in time.
To the OP I would recommend the Samsung galaxy note coming out early next year. 5.3 inch screen. IPS screen, dual core processor, phone, and great note taking ability.
I don't like Apples scam of upgrading every year and the costs are incredible. I'm praying for ICS and continued tweaking of problems.

Exactly the sort of reply I'd expect.
This site began as a Developer's site, but has since grown into a site for non-devs to get help and information.
You are basically saying that unless you know what 'sudo' means, you shouldn't buy anything other than an ipad, and you shouldn't be on this site.

I am trying to decide if a Nexus 10 is suitable for me. I currently have a Nexus 4 and a Acer C7 Chromebook.
I mainly browse the internet on sites like reddit, XDA (obv), checking emails and YouTube.
What attracts me to the Nexus is having the stock Android experience combined with killer specs like the screen resolution, I watch a lot of movies so having a high resolution screen is important because I prefer HD content (Who doesn't, right?). Also, will most content on YouTube play on it?
Is the battery life good? And lastly, is it worth getting a screen protector and case with a keyboard?

I secnod this, even if I'm having issues with Samsung's service. Hopefully you don't get a defective unit. Love the N10, hate Samsung.
Had my N10 for just over a week and do all the activities in your list. I am very pleased with my purchase. I have a lot of tech devices and am rarely surprised but several times as I customize the UI or find another "cool" app I am amazed at the overall speed of the N10 and how visually impressive it looks.
If you try to use it outside of its intended sphere (media consumption) I asume you could gripe at what it does not do well. Mine replaced a netbook used for media consumption and it blew that away. Viewing emails and short replies are fine but I use my desktop PC for any extensive typing. Right now I do not intend to purchase a bluetooth keyboard.
The lack of accessories can be a pain. I had to make my own dock, so I could watch videos hands free in bed, while waiting for a better solution. It looks crappy but does the job.
I got the N10 early December and haven't regretted it for a moment, I use it for all the activities you list, I travel for work and basically live away 3 to 5 days a week. My work Laptop is VERY locked down as I work in a secure business so the Nexus is my laptop replacement while I'm away, I used to lug two laptops at times but no longer. The Nexus does media, games and browsing in style. I also use it to maintain a couple of websites while I'm away and it works well with the simpler stuff. I wouldn't pretend it's perfect but all round an excellent package and I wouldn't want to go back to hauling two laptops round.

I found the MoKo case w/ bluetooth KB on AMazon for $28 to make a great stand and keyboard case. Keyboard's magnetic and removable, too
I have my Nexus 10 for about a week now and I also hesitated for a good while if I should buy it or not. Now that I've been using it for a while I can safely say that it was an awesome purchase.
The screen is brilliant, it's lightning fast, the build quality is top notch (none of the hardware errors that made me so worried in the first place, very solid back etc.) and it does everything I want it to do.
I got a Logitech bluetooth keyboard to go with it (you can find it here) - it says it is for the iPad, but everything works just fine for Android. It's big enough to make typing a breeze and I use it all the time during my classes.
Battery life is very good at about 8-10 hours of heavy usage (brightness adjusted to about ~30%), which lasts me the entire day and I never need to worry about running out before I get through the day.
Make sure you get a nice case for it as well and you're all set. I read so much about reboots and lockups, but during this week I've used the devise intensely and I didn't get a single reboot or lockup. I think Chrome crashed on me once and that certainly is nothing to complain about.
Media playback feels sooo nice - the screen really shines when watching movies and the speakers are also really good.
I was weighing so many options - the Transformer Prime, different Asus und Acer tabs, I even looked at the Surface RT and the Sony Xperia Tablet Z which is gonna be released soon. It was a close call between buying the Nexus 10 now or waiting for the Xperia Z - in the end the small battery on the Xperia Z made the difference for me. I need at least 8 hours usage from my tablet and I wouldn't have gotten that from the Sony device, so I'm very, very happy.
It's the best tablet out right now and I'm saying that after watching hours of Youtube reviews, reading on a lot of sites and finally having the Nexus 10 at home. You can't go wrong with it!
I love mine. It was a Christmas gift from my wife and I've used it everyday since. I use it for what you described. I'm not much of a gamer, but every so often I might play something.
Regrading battery life, mine is more than acceptable. Over the weekend I got over 48 hours before having to charge it (about 5 1/2 hours of screen on time) and yesterday, with heavy usage, I got 7 1/2 hours of screen on time.
One bit of advice, if you can, buy it locally from Walmart or Staples instead of going through the Play Store. Unfortunately, there are some units that suffer from bad light bleed and other issues. Exchanging it at a store will be easier than the RMA process with Google.
Even I'm stuck wid the same problem... One of my czn's got the N10, and he's getting a 100% CPU load wid nothing on it.... No background process, nothing else.... And reading abt the defected ones is so scary, that to me, every second N10 seems to be defected (Okay... that's a bit of exaggeration, but yeah, it feels like that...) Would someone recommend a good place to buy an Un-defected N10???
