I'm currently running elelinux 1.8 and apparently it runs on gingerbread!
It's a great stable rom, which is why i haven't upgraded to 2.0, but i'm wondering what the benefits are of it running gingerbread?
We still can't install apps that are 2.2 only like Google earth or flash. so what's the point?

new features
some work for workless devs
something to flash for people who love to flash a new (better) rom every second day with the hope to make the hero a bit faster like me
(the last two points, mainly the first of them, are just fun )
there are lot of new things. i'm not an expert but just look at some apps that came with gingerbread and the new cyanogendmod settings.
Haha, definitely know what you mean about people who like to flash a new ROM every other day. I was looking for a new ROM to flash and then i realised that actually my phone runs fine already
Yeah there are quite a lot of cool new apps, it's just a shame not to have flash lite and some of the sense widgets, but I think it is a bit faster.

I'm a little confused.
I have been experimenting with different ROM's for my 32A device, all based on the official HTC Sense release for Magic.
I have tried:
CaSense 1.0
MyHero 2.0.4
HoFo 3.0.5
I've been a long time MyHero user, and i have been very pleased with both performance and functionality. Switched to CaSense to try something new. It works very well too. Since I already wiped, I downloaded the third 32a ROM, this time the Official HoFo Community ROM.
Now I'm lost. In my opinion there are very few differences between the three. Which one should I choose?
I would probably get different answers from the different followers.
Does anybody know advantages/disadvantages of the different ROM's?
Is there an updated comparison chart of the different ROM's exist? (I know there is a 32B comparison chart, but not for 32A, and I don't know if any of there are updated, or even possible to keep updated due to the rapid development of new versions...)
Why are there so many similar ROM's available?
It seems that most (all) developers are working together to find solutions to issues, and most ROM's have the same functionality and faults in them. So why do we have so many options?
I would also like some input on this subject also

Information about different flavours of cooked roms for magic with Sense seems scarse so, to me, if anyone who knows better the differences between them and wants to share, I'd be more than happy to know =)

I'm currently on CaSense 1.1 and find it very stable.
I also tried Magic GyD 2.0.3 and it is also good.
The HoFo ROM only had English and Chinese language installed, and I would like a ROM that supports Norwegian keyboard. So this is not for me.
I will give CyanogenMod 4.2.3.1 a try too, but I am still confused
Most of the ROMs are very similar, and I can not understand what differences excists that can justify all the different versions.
Are the ROM's just personal adjustments made to the developers liking, or do they include something unique?
I am using HoFo and I love it. It is extremly stable with little to no bugs and Hotweiss is very fast fixing any issues.
Using myHero after trying most of the other roms, reglasses seems to do a nice job on his cooks. But i have to admit i didn't care to give CaSense much of a chance cause it seemed like he put something together way to fast with to many issues just to be the first one releasing a rom based on the official TW magic rom with sense UI. Where i appreciate the developer taking his time to do some nice cooking and serve the good and more stable release.

From your signature, you have a CaSense 1.1 which you modified yourself. Why did you do it yourself? If you can answer that, then you have the answer to your question above.
Alright, I've sworn by hotweiss' HoFo ROMs for a long while, simply because it was just modified stock and he had the same device and provider as me. It's currently undergoing teething issues with the Sense UI. I would also like to know about the differences between all the Sense UI ROMs - I just don't have the time to load each one and tinker with it long enough to find their individual perks.
Judging by your post, I believe you want the nice flashy Sense UI. Keep in mind that Sense UI does significantly slow your phone down - WAY down. I installed Cyanogen's ROM the other day just to compare the difference. If you can live without flashy UI, go with Cyanogen. It's much faster and snappier, and really, the installation is pretty much a breeze anyways.
Advantages of Sense UI is that it looks pretty. That's pretty much it. Most of it's functionality can be found from other apps on the Market. You got a ****load of Twitter apps, Facebook app for the widget, SyncMyPix to get contact photos, etc etc. That said, I'm sort of addicted to the Sense UI interface right now myself. Oh, one more thing - Sense UI doesn't allow other apps to control the brightness (I believe it's an issue affecting all Sense UI ROMs). It's a pain in the ass, since I used to have my brightness auto adjust based on location and time. If that's something you want...go Cyanogen.
Oh, Cyanogen also has OTA updates. Hotweiss also posts up the link on Twitter. I do not know about the other ROMs though. This means that if you have a nice data plan, you can update your phone anywhere.

The modification consists of removing some applications I don't use (Twitter, Plurk, etc) and adding my own ringtones and wallpaper/lockscreen.
I would probably do this to any ROM I choose.
My point is, that it seems irrelevant which ROM I choose, they are basically the same, providing identical features, speed and functionality.

I am very fond of the Sense UI. If I wasn't, I would give Cyanogen a try.
I don't use Twitter, Facebook or Plurk, and I usually remove the applications from the ROM.
And I have always thought the UI was snappy enough for me, so speed is not an issue.
I do not require a frequently updated ROM, but it is nice if issues are fixed as soon as possible. But since many (all) Hero ROM's have the same issues, I just thought the community would benefit from a joint effort of the developers to fix those, instead of the minor tweaking jobs they do now.
(No disrespect to the developers intended. I really appreciate the effort. I just want you to go in a different direction )

I always used the newest roms with the newest features, starting at jesusfreke's roms til cm6(also nightly builds)
From time to time we all recognized that our phones are not natively built for the firmwares we were able to use thanks to thos great devs we had and have.
Anyway we could help us with ramhack, JIT, Swap, Compcache, DangerSPL and much more.
Although there were huge efforts in making it usuable it never worked totally.
For Examlple:
A new script to prevent certain apps from being shut down, FireRat's -he said - "simple" but revolutionary and effective scripts/patches along with lbcoder (who's always a bit angry and annoyed by those newbies around the forum (as well as me ))
BUT I was never completely satisfied with Eclair and FroYo on my rom. It always ran somehow sluggish. Then phone.apk was killed because deskclock was still in memory and you have to wait for 2-4 seconds till you can accept a call or whatever.
So in the end, although there were so much efforts I went back to donut and it feels so snappy after a long time....
Now I wanted to ask you all: Do you think that our phones should stick to Donut (perhaps even cupcake) and being developed in this way instead of always porting the newest stuff?
I know that especially FroYo has some really nice goodies which don't exist in Donut and I really miss them as well as some apps. (I paid for LauncherPro Plus and can't even use it right now)
But I want a phone that shoud be able to work flawless.
Perhaps we can build new Donut roms with some goodies from Eclair/FroYo

Are there any Sense ROMs that are CM-based for the Hero?
My girlfriend has a Hero that I've got rooted running LiquidSense right now (see sig). It's running pretty well, and she likes the interface. Early on I tried installing aospmod to see what she thought of it. She was not a fan. So CM is out of the cards for her. Moreover, I'm not a fan of CM since it seems to be pretty unstable overall. She needs her phone for work. It needs to be stable. And I really don't feel like I should have to update her phone with nightlies just to have something that's been upgraded since last Spring.
So my question is: Are there any STABLE Sense ROMs for Android 2.2 or 2.3? From what I can tell, any development for the Hero is sticking to CM7. I see that there's a Hero theme for CM7 now, but she wants the full Sense experience (incl contacts, etc), and not just the visuals.
There are a couple of 2.2 roms, but I don't think they are complete. If you want a full and complete sense rom, liquid is about it.

i too use my phone for work and there are stable versions of the CM variations, the nightlies are for the most part unstable.. the sense integration was cool, but stock android you can do all of the same by installing the apps that integrate the contacts, which essentially is all that HTC did with sense, they just used their own apps (which arent as good).. my wife was a huge sense fan, but after i got her to try something other than sense for a while she came to realize that it wasnt the awesomeness that it was toted to be.. aospcmod (which is android 2.3) is incredibly stable, and there are ways to make the phone look like sense, but in all honesty i dont believe that sense was ever meant to run efficiently (its too fat) on the hero, and they have come out with newer versions of sense that would be better suited for the hero but we cant get them.. like ranger said there is a 2.2 version of sense out there, but pretty sure it isnt that stable.. and the other sense products are just stock, but are "optimized" (meaning they just took some crap out)..

Can anyone recommend a solid rom? I installed a froyo rom about 10 months ago on a friends hero.. he has been getting lots of daily random reboots.. other than those he likes it. I'm looking for a solid rom.. don't care if it's froyo or gb.. just something that works well.. a rom that's been around for a while possibly. I've been installing roms on my Evo 4g and galaxy s 4g.. but don't have experience with hero roms..
probably cyanogenmod. If you want sense UI stock is probably the way to go, because its the most stable. Personally the most stable custom sense rom I've used was fresh hero 2.4. I think it was android 2.1. Now if you dont mind not having sense then I sugest Cyanogenmod it is currently at stable release of 7.0.3 android 2.3 Gingerbread. I have looked around and tried many roms but im slow about how to install things and have issues with most roms, so I always end up back at Cyanogenmod. Hope this helps
the truth is everyone is going to say something different,there are going to be issues on every rom some very minor and some big it all depends my only suggestion is to install a coouple different roms like aoscmod hero deck and cm7 and a stock sprint rom then make back ups of them so he can test them out and easily switch back to the one he likes best.

He's absolutely right about preference and different ppl but,
In the little time I've had with my hero... I've tried all of the roms available, and since OMFG has fixed the wifi problem I'm using their latest ... Smooth fast and no fc for me

@OP.....Quoted above is the best answer to this question. Bierce22 nailed it. A rom/setup that runs perfect for me is in no way relevant to how it's going to work on your friends phone. There are just too many variables between phones and between people's preferences & needs.

I would recommend Cynogenmod 7 stable release.
Everything works, No reboots (In my experience) Super stable
and most important of all very smooth.
Just use Launcher pro (free version from market) or
the original launcher (see below for link) which comes with
GB because ADW is known for giving people force close problems.

thanks for the heads up guys.. I ended up putting the cm7/gb rom on it.. and so far so good. Runs pretty darn good.
Your random daily reboots could be from having your CPU speed set too high. Currently I'm building CM7 from source, but aosp is my other preference for stability, performance, etc. But as others above me said, each to their own. Find one that suits your friend best.

At the moment I'm on Android Revolution. MIUI looks good for me, which one do I flash?

Only because as it's maybe your first time you can experience the rom without any bugs or things which need changing (like the language setting to stop Android Market crashing).
If you like it you can try other versions of it from XDA. I used Freshly Squeezed for ages and enjoyed it. Thread / Screenshots.
MIUI is really nice. Before MIUI I was on CyanogenMod for months too, as well as trying most other roms.
Using freshly squeezed edition, 1.10.14 and 1.10.21 works ok for me, though I really haven't tried the other versions of MiUI for DHD.
Came from cm7 and sense but MIUI is just beauiful and fast.
You should try the freshly squeezed version, very stable I haven't had any issues with it

I would suggest using the original one, only for the advantage of OTA updates. You dont have to flash everytime a new version comes out.
P.S: I havent used any of the other flavors, so this is the only advantage i know about

My DHD is running MIUI.us and it has OTA updates, too. Maybe a bit slower than the original MIUI, though. MIUI.us was the first MIUI for me and I haven't shifted to another MIUI as I think it maybe the same.
I liked the SCI systune versoin. You get a very good cpu control app for free and "a user" makes very nice subtle tweaks to the rom!
No one will be able to tell you what one to use. Sense they are all mostly the same except for a theme here and there.
Me personally I would say don't ever use an MIUI rom but then again I don't like people breaking the android laws like MIUI does.
