Need to UNROOT? These are great directions! - EVO 4G General

Hey guys, all credit goes to retnuh730, he posted these directions to help someone unroot in the dev sections. I happened to go through the google doc and was very impressed with how helpful/precise it is and wanted to share them in the GENERAL section just in case someone could use help unrooting.
Edit: retnuh said he can't take credit for the instructions because he bookmarked them awhile back when he came across them, (but thanks for posting anyway). so thanks to whoever made these instructions!
Edit 2: fixed the links, thanks guys for the catch

sorry guys, i just copied and pasted the thread comment itself. it should be fixed now.

Wow, talk about a timely post. I was helping a friend unroot tonight due to a dropped Evo and the resulting broken glass screen. I thought I had it pretty down pat meaning I read about it, knew the process but couldn't find a working RUU. (I was in a hurry as well). Now I have the ammunition to accomplish the task. Thanks again.

I have done this to my phone several times, and also for some friends a few times too. Thanks OP for the links. I know the process by heart, but for people still following the old tutorial on here this should help because the old tutorial still links an old RUU and you will get the main version is error, which happened to me. It wasn't until I downloaded the 3.70 RUU that it worked.

Thanks for the post.

Tried to download teh RUU and it said decompression failed, I am on a mac and have tried this with different versions and they all fail. What the eff is going on?

Can you unroot to stock without using the USB connector
My HTC Evo 4G usb port broke off the motherboard, is there anyway to unroot back to stock without using the usb connector that is required with the RUU way?

I did a search, and read jcase's thread where he removed a link a while back. After many many times of flashing roms daily, I think my trackball is starting to go on me, and while my phone is under warranty I don't want to get busted sending them a rooted phone. Anyone have some easy tips on how to do this, thanks.

if you search for it in the search jawn at the top ^ you would have come up with this. bah baaah!

I really don't think the Eris trackball was ever meant to be used. I use Opera, so I'm constantly using the trackball, and I'm on my fourth Eris. I'm actually waiting on Fedex to deliver a Moto Droid that VZW just sent at no extra charge just so they don't have to keep replacing my phones.
I hope it's not a disappointment.
Ok I found it in the thread, thanks for that. Just one thing, I'm in my tools directory of the sdk, and I have no clue how to install the hboot and recovery files. Any tips on that part would be great.
thank you.
I'm on step one where it says.
Step one:
Put hboot.nb0 and recovery.img in the tools dir of your sdk.

[i9003] Frustrated First Root

Starting off, I'm probably posting in the wrong section. Excuse my forum etiquette, but I need help with this because I'm insanely frustrated and in pain (Decided to learn how to exploit the android OS while recovering from my surgery).
So, if you've read past that first part and are still willing to help, thank you.
Moderators: If you absolutely need to move this post, please move it to a section where it will actually get attention and I can get an answer. Thanks.
Anyway, the breakdown of my problem is this;
I wanted to root my new day old Sprint CMDA Nexus S, I've never rooted anything android, and if anything the most I've done with a droid OS is installed it on my old iphone 2g.
So I did some googling and first thing to come up was this guide:
nexusshacks(dotcom)/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-root-nexus-s/
Now, usually I would do a bit more research, but because of the lack of blood in my body I'm doing dumb things, making bad decisions, whatever.
So obviously this guide doesn't work, even a quick skim of the comments shows that, I try to follow this guide-
I followed step "fastboot flash boot rootboot.img" then tried to reboot. It freezes at the google boot logo. This is where I start getting a bit nervous because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
So I think "Well, if I jump over to someone elses tutorial and do that it should overwrite any "root"ing data I've tried to put into the device.
So I jump over to this:
androidadvices(dotcom)/root-sprint-nexus-gingerbread-235-update/3/
It has me install PDANet and it's frozen since on the installing PDAnet to your phone.
I just want to get my Nexus S back to original factory default so I can start fresh from there without a terrible guide.
Can someone please help me get there?
Thanks.
tl;dr:
Bad guide soft bricked my phone and I want to restore it to factory defaults

Ok I can see you need help but I am inclined to warn you instead. Stop. If you cannot figure out how to root the easiest phone to root then you shouldn't be messing around with your phone. You will end up screwing something up, won't know how to fix it, and come crying here for help. Do yourself some research before you go and ruin your phone.
Yes you posted in the wrong place.
There is a thread in this forum on how to root the nexus s 4g. Rooting is model specific. The T-Mobile Nexus s is different from the sprint, att, Rodgers, o2 etc.
Please please do some more research!

Thanks for a reply, and I understand I dug a hole.
Now I need to get out of said hole, so if you had any directions of how to dig myself out, that'd be great.
if you can get into fastboot then you are still cool, if not you're gonna have to odin it. I dont actually know where the tar files are, Micheal posted it up but i think they deleted the thread. You should have came to xda first,we have one clicks.
actually rooting is the same across the board. same steps same everything... in fact the one click root version 1 would work on any and all of them, version 2 branches out a bit further due to that it installs cwm.
anyways boot into fastboot, download stock fastboot images from petes thread found here http://wonderly.com/bb/CRESPO4G/OEM/GRJ22IMAGES.zip and flash them all in fastboot.
youll be back on stock grj22 but youll at least be booting.. from there follow a guide for rooting this phone that has you flash cwm (not a prerooted kernel). or be lazy and use my one click root
You sir are a class act. We need a ton more guys like you here at XDA

[Q] Gingerbread 2.3.4

hello all, this past weekend I found gingerbread 2.3.4 at samfirmware and put it on my wife's Epic but I don't think she is really happy with it, so she ask if I could put the EC 05 back on is there a way to do this? And if so once sprint sends out the gingerbread update OTA will her phone be able to get it?
Yes, you would need to use Odin to install EC05 back on your Epic. In the Development thread, there is a thread with the instructions and downloads to do it.
Thank you, is there a link to the page

It's one of the first 3-5 threads, as it's stickied. Talks about fixing a bricked phone or something like that.
Go to the development section of the Epic 4G and you'll find what you need with links, videos, screen shots, all the goods.
Before embarking on this Odin journey though, I would suggest getting a better USB cable than the one that came with your phone. It sucks.

Many thanks my friend.
Don't forget to back up anything you don't want to lose.

You can. I had to switch my dhd recently due to hardware issues. They gave me back a gb dhd which was rooted again by me at the first evening. Follow the instructions and you can manage it!

Time ago I upgrade too by mistake to '2.3.37' and this thread had the solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152233
Be carefull in goldcard step when copying the serial from phone to post in the revSkill page. Took me two attempts to create correctly the goldcard to execute the downgrade.
i could do with pointing in the right direction
i have a dhd - unbranded
android 2.3.3
sense 2.1
build 2.50.405.2
i have read through the downgrading instructions i have found and downloaded the files but can't get it to work
when i run adb it doesn't even find my dhd!
any advice would be appreciated
ash .

tracfone flashed to Verizon?

I am looking to flash a tracfone to verizon. I am new and there are probably guides to do this but I have not found them yet. I saw another post that said it was possible to flash the software on a T-Mobile phone, I am hoping its the same for a tracfone.

The 930vl can be flashed to a stock verizon rom just fine. I have 2 using the hybrid rom right now on straight talk service.

Flashfire
Thank you for the great instructions. I have downloaded the files and made a copy of the instructions to print out and go by. One question though- #5 says to install flashfire. Is that included in one of the downloads listed? I did not see it. I hope to be read up enough by the weekend to give it a try.!

No, you will need to find a copy of it in searching. Chainfire only has ot for dl on play store now, but tou can find .55 apk with a quick search.
Edit: OP for the mod thread had added a link for flashfire
who-hoo
Seems to be a success!! I had some issues and at one time it seemed to be non responsive. I also got to see the little android robot laying down with a red bang on his opened chest! But after some CPR- its back and working fine! Thanks for the guidance. A true learning experience, the first of more to come.
