Seen a post by bwcorvus in a Xoom rooting thread saying that he was charging his phone with his rooted Xoom, having the thunderbolt I was intrigued and wanted to test on my non-rooted Xoom. Not seeing this anyplace else I thought I would spread the word.
I bought a USB 2.0 female to Micro b Male Adapter from ebay for $2.99 and received it today; it worked like a charm!
If your like me and you have the thunderbolt and carry your Xoom around with you too, you now do not have to be too worried about using it because it may die.
Hope this is helpful.
Haha!!! I did the same with my iPhone I noticed that when I tried to access my music from the iPhone on the Xoom but all it did was charge the iPhone instead. Can be very useful I suppose!
That's awesome. I just need to find a mini usb to mini usb cable then. If they even make them.
Thats pretty sweet
You want micro to micro not mini... mini won't fit.

LOL whats so "ah ha" about this? USB has voltage at its port. phones that charge via usb can take advantage of this.
its how i can use a comcastic moto dvr's usb port to plug up a hub and charge the PS3 peripherals.
A liitle off topic
Anyone trying charging the xoom with the micro usb port yet? Even though Motorola already said no.

Thank you, glad this was useful.
just wondering, what's the exact name of the cable?
Can't find it on ebay... micro to micro usb cable isn't specific enough or something...

Hi,
I was charging my Xoom yesterday and my dog ran around and tripped on the cable. The charger bent and wouldn't work anymore. I bought a new charger thinking that was the problem, but it won't charge either. I assume that the port itself broke somehow.
It's the WiFi model, i bought from Best Buy without any protection plan. Does anyone know offhand what the cost of repair would be via Motorola and turnaround time?
Or better yet, some other way to charge it? (i wish the mini USB would work)
Thanks
Put the dog up for adoption.
Go to motos website and jump on a chat to see what they say.

I posted it on the Moto forums, thanks. Also, I heard the dock charges it without using the normal port, is that true? Would that work?
I too was going to suggest the dock. I am fairly certain it charges through the USB.

Thanks, i'll do this, but can anyone 100% confirm that would work in my situation? It would be greatly appreciated.
Dock will charge it. It charges through the exposed metal sockets you see on the bottom, not through USB. But it will work I have one.
Cheers.
You should go to ifixit.com and look for a teardown. Try and find the part on EBay or see if you can order through Moto. That sucks.

The dock is/was on sale at BestBuy. That's your immediate best bet.
But that's a big inconvenience. I have the dock and I think I only used it once. You'd have to have a boner to be able to rest that dock on you when you're using it in bed.

Just a + 1 for confirmation.
I find the crappy little charge port & jack to be one of the VERY few cons about the Xoom. The 2 gold plated connectors at least offer hope that I could fabricate another charger (apple laptop style) if ever necessary.
Hey guys, I was floating around in the att galaxy s II forums cuz I'm flashing my buddies phone for him and came across a thread posted where a guy has his phone set up with the N64 Emulator using this micro USB to HDMI adapter to play it on his TV and then using a bluetooth controller to play it. Has anyone tried this? The adapter says it's compatible with the epic 4g.

Misleading.
The port on the E4GT is not MicroUSB, it's a MHL port.
MHL is basically microusb compatible but with extra pins for HDMI.
This will NOT work on the Epic.

I see. After rereading the adapter I see it says the E4GT and not the Epic 4g as I had initially read it. Bah I'm jealous now! I hope the Galaxy Nexus will have the MHL port on it.

The Galaxy Nexus does have a MHL port.
The advantage of MHL, being combined USB and HDMI, is that TVs are going to come out with MHL ports. This allows the TV to supply power over the USB while HDMI is active, so you don't drain your battery.
No negatives, because Mini-HDMI already requires an adapter.....

what it is bro
anker is a safe bet
I am looking into external chargers as well since you can replace the battery. I think I saw some Duracell ones on amazon as well, but thanks for the Anker suggestion!
I'm aware of their existance, what I want is effectively a "mini" one. I need it to be as small as possible but give the phone at least one charge.
Most of the ones ive seen on the net and on here are large and have large capacity
I will buy this one :
Portable Charger
Does anyone know where to get a rubber plug/cover of some kind to put in the slim port when it is not being used to protect it from dust? I found several to cover headphone ports but can't find one for the slim port.
There are plenty on eBay. Just search for micro usb dust

Is it a micro usb cover though? It is a mini usb port as far as I can tell which is a different shape. There are very few on ebay. Only 1 mini usb option.
Its micro.

Really? Didn't know that. Thanks :good: That'll be easy to find then.
I've to buy a gift from my sisters bf, he has a nexus 4 and wanted to connect it up to the TV (so they can watch movies/tv shows)...basically like a WD Live box. Anyway, after reading some posts today I'm a little confused at which method is best? Cable or gadget?
Just whatever provides him with the best experience when watching movies etc. I know the N4 doesnt support MHL, is there a way round this/what do you guys do for charging when connecting it up to the tv?
Also, I seen people talk about NETGEAR Push2TV, but from what I read there is a delay? (not good for movies/tv?)
Thanks in advance, I dont have the phone to test...so thought this would be the best place to ask
I have the Netgear Push2TV and there is a delay. Very small though. Movies are great on it but I wouldn't recommend it for gaming.
You could always buy him a Slimport adapter on amazon. Same concept as the Push2TV, just, its not wireless. But it has no delay and allows it to be charged simultaneously. Just like MHL.

Thats awesome, thanks for replying speedygonzo (you live up to your name lol). I do like the idea of a wireless connection, but maybe the cable would provide a better experience?
Just to confirm, is it the slimport:

or is there something else?
Cheers again guys,
