Is there any traffic analyzer that works for DHD? i want to analyze the traffic that goes over the 3G network and see which servers the OTA updates comes from.
you can try 3g watchdog

HI there,
Has anyone experienced an issue whereby bluefire or similar contivity VPN client connects seamlessly over WIFI and 3G however will only allow RDP or VNC over WIFI.
I am currently running bluefire and am able to authenticate through 3G but thats it, I have no other functionality.
Any help would be great!
Thx
I've seen it where specific ports are blocked on the 3G providers network, but given that you're establishing a vpn tunnel, that should be irrelevent, as all the traffic should be tunneled via the VPN. I wonder if the Device isn't picking up the new route to send the traffic via the VPN, and is instead sending it via the 3g connection to a non-existant device.
Does your VPN-endpoint give you any logs to show if its actually receiving the traffic from the device? Are you able to ping anything within the remote network (assuming ping is allowed) from the device?
One thing I have noticed is that if you have a 3G connection open, then establish a wifi connection, the routing table doesn't seem to update to use the wifi connection and you actually have to kill the 3G session. I wonder if something like that is happening here - the 3g session establishes a default route, the VPN session then comes up but the device doesn't realise to send traffic via the VPN session. Or are you getting any traffic through the 3G/VPN connection?
I have the option to turn on verbose logging. I ll give that a go and see if it highlights anything really obvious.
Hi All,
New to my fantastic HD Touch so apologise if this is an obvious question..
If I have wifi enabled and data connection enabled, if i go onto the internet or, say, Youtube for aguments sake, will it use the Wifi connection as a priority over the data connection?
I ask because i want to keep my bills down without having to manually keep turning the data connection off (it connects every 5 mins to check for email)
Thanks
Loving this forum by the way!!
Depends on how the connection is set up. You can check your config by going to settings->connections->connections->advanced->select networks
There is then a drop down under the heading "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using:". When I bought mine this was set to "Contract Internet" which basically means my vodafone data connection. I managed to run up a bill of over £50 before I spotted this (this was before I moved to a decent data package).
I changed this setting to "My Work Network" and it then used the wifi in preference to the cell connection. However, I think (although haven't scientifically tested) that if a program gets a cell connection before the wifi is activated then it may not automatically switch over if wifi is subsequently enabled.
BTW I tested all this using a $10 app called GPRS Traffic Monitor (which can monitor HSDPA as well as GPRS) to see if the traffic figures rose while browsing the net with wifi on and off. After changing my settings the data usage figures only went up if wifi was off.
I recently installed GPRS Traffic monitor which shows me how much traffic is passing over my HSDPA connection and I noticed something strange.
Sometimes when I have a solid wifi connection my HSDPA traffic figures shoot up while I'm browsing. I discover that the reason for this is that in settings->connections->connections advanced->networks the default connection for applications has been set to be "Contract WAP" even though I had previously specifically set it to "My Work Network".
OK, so I change this setting back to be "My work network" and Opera starts using the wifi in preference to HSDPA and only switches to HSDPA when the wifi is no longer available. Perfect.
Except that a few hours later I notice that the HSDPA traffic is shooting up again even though I have a strong wifi connection. I go back and check the settings and the default connection has reverted to "Contract WAP". I didn't do this - it happened automatically.
This has been happening for a while now and I think the cause may be the crappy cell reception where i live. Occasionally the phone loses the signal from Vodafone but a few seconds later gets it again and re-registers with the network automatically (I know this happens because if I turn off auto-network-selection I keep getting asked to select my network). My suspicion is that this re-registering is resetting my default network connection.
This may also be why occasionally I seem to lose my 3G connection settings and have to run the connection setup wizard again.
This is really annoying me because I have to keep checking the settings before any major browsing session to ensure I don't blow my monthly 3G bandwith.
Does anyone have any experience of this problem or advice on how to fix it.
Cheers,
David
Hi!
When connecting to the internet the icon on top of the screen changes from a triangle-ish thing with bars/columns under it to a icon with the text "3G" and arrows beneath it (which all of you probably know...). I know im connected through 3G to internet by then but what about when that icon changes to 3G with bars/columns instead of the arrows. Does that mean that a connection is established but I don't actually download/upload any data?
Basically what I'm wondering is if I can have the phone connected to the internet for faster access without any traffic going on until I start, for instance, surfing the web. Until now I always deactivate the connection when I'm done with it.
Another question I have is if there's another icon for hsdpa (aka 3.5G or 3G+) or if the phone still uses the 3G icon for those connections.
Thanks in advance!
"I have is if there's another icon for hsdpa (aka 3.5G or 3G+) "
then it show a H rather then 3g
having a data connection open don't mean it transfer data it only do that if a program running tranfer data
do you know about some program able to monitoring wifi (e.g. inSSIDer for win) and cellular signal strengh?
