I recently installed GPRS Traffic monitor which shows me how much traffic is passing over my HSDPA connection and I noticed something strange.
Sometimes when I have a solid wifi connection my HSDPA traffic figures shoot up while I'm browsing. I discover that the reason for this is that in settings->connections->connections advanced->networks the default connection for applications has been set to be "Contract WAP" even though I had previously specifically set it to "My Work Network".
OK, so I change this setting back to be "My work network" and Opera starts using the wifi in preference to HSDPA and only switches to HSDPA when the wifi is no longer available. Perfect.
Except that a few hours later I notice that the HSDPA traffic is shooting up again even though I have a strong wifi connection. I go back and check the settings and the default connection has reverted to "Contract WAP". I didn't do this - it happened automatically.
This has been happening for a while now and I think the cause may be the crappy cell reception where i live. Occasionally the phone loses the signal from Vodafone but a few seconds later gets it again and re-registers with the network automatically (I know this happens because if I turn off auto-network-selection I keep getting asked to select my network). My suspicion is that this re-registering is resetting my default network connection.
This may also be why occasionally I seem to lose my 3G connection settings and have to run the connection setup wizard again.
This is really annoying me because I have to keep checking the settings before any major browsing session to ensure I don't blow my monthly 3G bandwith.
Does anyone have any experience of this problem or advice on how to fix it.
Cheers,
David

Hi,
I have had a search to see if this has been covered before but maybe I am using the wrong query.
I have an O2 Exec with the latest O2 Rom, and now when I do an email send and receive, the GPRS connection stays up. Whereas I could have sworn in the earlier ROM it disconnected after the send/receive.
I spoke to O2 and they assured me that it is supposed to do that, and since I only get charged for actaul data transfer, I can sit connected to GPRS all day for free (is this correct).
Now, my main question is. Say GPRS is up and connected, and I turn on WIFI or plug into my PC using the charger/sync cable and then do a send and receive. Will the Exec use these free connections or still route data over the GPRS?
I did a test and it looked as though when I did this, the GPRS connection was shut down, as after a send/receive and then disable WIFI, the connection setting showed a large U and not the connected icon.
I am now sitting with a GPRS connection active, email is set to manual and I have Pocket Weather set to 'Auto update on connection' and 'Auto update on Active Sync', but 'Use connection manager' is disabled as is 'Force a connect when not available'.
Should this mean that no data is used at all and that I can sit connected at no cost.
Sorry for the long rambling post, but I am a complete newbie to all this GPRS pda thing.

/Mad
related question - how to stop gprs connecting automatically
My wifi router at home is dodgy and sometimes the signal drops - this means my exec switches over automatically to GPRS (I'm not in a 3G area) and starts whacking up a big data bill before I realise. Is there anyway of getting it to ask me if I want to connect to GPRS - rather than it just telling me thats what its doing? Can't turn the phone off cos I still need to receive calls.
I did think of just scarmbling my connection settings, but now I've upgraded to the latest O2 rom the connections settings page does not show any existing connections! (I also can't get TomTom to run at all now but I guess I'll work through that one :-( )
Thanks,
John
I believe this is what you are looking for. Y
ou can set which connections programs use for thier internet access in Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Advanced, Select Networks.
Choosing My Work Network or My ISP should stop programs sucking up your money.
Thanks PReDiToR I've tried that but it then gives me a 'cannot connect' popup instead of using the wifi - it seems as if there has to be an accessible gprs connection for it to ignore before it will try wifi :-o
What does everyone else do? Maybe you're all rich or the company pays for your data?
Thanks
Any luck yet with the GPRS / WiFi issue?? I have got the sam

Derrr...
EDIT: Hey I've just read what I've written below and its exavctly what Preditor suggested - funny didn't work when I tried ........ I guess it was because I was trying 'My ISP' without gprs settings - which complained - whereas 'My Work Network' without gprs settings allows the wifi to connect ... :?
I've now got a workaround for this - means going through the menus every time I DO want GPRS data - but thats rare till I get a better contract which will have to wait till my 12 months with O2 is up in November.. web'n'walk sounds good - unlimited gprs :-o - (could T-Mobile really tell when I was using my XDa as a modem for my laptop - which is forbidden in the terms of this contarct - and when I was just usng data for its own programs - which is allowed ??)
Anyway what I do is settings>connections>advanced>Select Networks> choose My Work Network for programs connecting to the internet. I have no gprs settings in My Work Network but it connects to wifi no problem.
So when I forget and I'm out of wifi range I get an error that it can't connect, so change the setting back to 'MY ISP' and GPRS kicks in.
A Today Screen shortcut to the Network Management screen would help - but I'm almost always using wifi so I haven't bothered.

I don't have the Vox yet (I'm an idiot for ordering it right before a freaking holiday) so I'm not sure if this already happens or not but...
Say for instance I'm connected to the internet/aim/whatever through wifi. However, I end up moving too far away from the hotspot and end up dropping the signal. When this happens, is there a way to make the GPRS automatically come in and replace the connection? Is that within the settings of WM6 or is there an app that does this? Can it even be done if it hasn't already?
it happens automatically to me
if the wifi connection is so slow or weak it starts to connect to gprs which actually annoys me
MMM
When I configure automatic connection trough GPRS, the phone connects via GPRS, even if a Wi-Fi connection is present. Ther should be a way to prevent usage of GPRS when connected trough wi-fi. Anyone knows how to do it?
Hi All,
New to my fantastic HD Touch so apologise if this is an obvious question..
If I have wifi enabled and data connection enabled, if i go onto the internet or, say, Youtube for aguments sake, will it use the Wifi connection as a priority over the data connection?
I ask because i want to keep my bills down without having to manually keep turning the data connection off (it connects every 5 mins to check for email)
Thanks
Loving this forum by the way!!
Depends on how the connection is set up. You can check your config by going to settings->connections->connections->advanced->select networks
There is then a drop down under the heading "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using:". When I bought mine this was set to "Contract Internet" which basically means my vodafone data connection. I managed to run up a bill of over £50 before I spotted this (this was before I moved to a decent data package).
I changed this setting to "My Work Network" and it then used the wifi in preference to the cell connection. However, I think (although haven't scientifically tested) that if a program gets a cell connection before the wifi is activated then it may not automatically switch over if wifi is subsequently enabled.
BTW I tested all this using a $10 app called GPRS Traffic Monitor (which can monitor HSDPA as well as GPRS) to see if the traffic figures rose while browsing the net with wifi on and off. After changing my settings the data usage figures only went up if wifi was off.
Hi folks
Since day 1, I have always found the Networking (WiFi, 3G) system on WM61 very confusing.
If I go to connections, I have "My work network", Under there I have my Vodafone live profile. I have no idea why. Why cant I see WiFi settings here, and adapters etc
Under advanced, I can choose programs that auto connect to the net and auto connect to a private network. I have to set both of these to "My work network" otherwise my Vodafone Live 3G connection will not work. Surely connecting to a private network and connecting to the internet could be one and the same (in the case of using a router via a lan) ? Also this Network Management dialog does not seem to have anything to do with the Wi Fi network. I mean I cannot get at my WiFi adapters here etc.
The whole thing is a mess, If I want to see WiFi settings I have to use the WiFo icon in settings.
Can anyone make sense of this for me (and I'm sure many others). I'd love to see a definitive guide as to whats what, an explanation of each function/icon/tab/dialog
and finally a recommended setup for using WiFi, 3G etc
im kinda confused by WM6.1 network management too!
Currently i have my top setting set to 'Work Network' so that it accesses my wifi at home,
And the 'private network' is set to my 3G data provider, however it seems very clunky and if it was the other way around, i risk using my 3G data allowance even if Wifi was connected.
Im keen to also get some clarity here.

I live in a very marginal coverage area and have an issue everytime the wind blows right and my HD2 picks up an Edge signal, it will immediately stop using Wi-Fi and try using edge.
Happens if the phone picks up a roaming edge connection as well (but then I get all the "You may be charged" messages)
I want it to stay on Wi-Fi until I have 0 Wi-fi signal before using Edge or H.
is it possible?
Here this should do http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478519
Its an excellent software.
settings menu all settings connections connections advanced tab select networks change the top drop down to "my work network"
