Help with MicroSD - Milestone 2 General

Ok...I've bought a new Lexar 16GB MicroSD Class 4 to replace my old Sandisk 8GB Class 4 card.
I copied everything across. However, I get random phone freezing.
The freezing only occurs when I have the new MicroSD in. I've replace it already with a new one, but it seems my phone doesn't like it.
I've tried:
1) Checking drive for errors
2) Reformatting drive using Windows
3) Reformatting drive using Android
4) Factory Reset phone
But its still the same.
[EDIT] It seems that Android is corrupting something on my card, because when I run chkdsk it comes up with the "Errors are Fixed" dialog....it says it puts the :"files in a 'FOUND' folder". However when I look into the MicroSD, there is no 'FOUND' folder. Also, copying files to and from the MicroSD card in Windows works fine.
HELP! and thanks.

Ok..I'll give it a go. Using SD Formatter with Full (Overwrite) option. I hope this works.
[EDIT] SD Formatter has not solved problem. Also, reformatting in 8k, 16k, 32k, 64k not working.
Annoyed.

I think Milestone2 have a SD card compatibility issue .many kind of sd card can't run well on the device .but sandisk is good on it .

I have the same problem, can´t fix... I think is a bug ...

microSD disappearance.. SOLVED!

People have been replacing their microSD cards not knowing that the problem is actually in the files and folders..
Ok here it is!
When i scroll through the hTC Sense tabs to music or photos, the applications try to load the thumbs from the Phone/microSD, that's when it suddenly freezes then the microSD vanishes..
I inserted the microSD into my PC and browsed the drive in "Thumbnail view" and guess what happened, it froze.. I figured since the idea was the same in hTC Sense when it tries to load any thumbs..
So i went to the microSD drive again and chose "detailed view" then went into each folder and changed to "thumbnail view" until i found two folders that kept freezing; "Program Files" and "My Music"..
In Program files the only folder that couldn't be deleted definitely had files that were behind the issue.. There was a music album too that froze, i deleted that too...
I backed up my files and formatted the microSD, i had to, because the folders behind the microSD disappearance cannot be deleted even with an "Unlocker"..
So far i'm playing around with my Leo and nothing is happening..
So by viewing the folders on the PC using Thumbnail view, you'll be able to identify the file or folder behind this annoying issue..
I had the same issue
I have (had) Sandisk microSD 16GB card. It was last week that it happened to me. Only backup of good files and re-formatting the card helped.
Today, I was copying 700MB file and suddenly it told me - cant write on a disk. I disconnected cable from the PC, rebooted Leo and SD card was no more present.
I put it into a card reader, tried to format it, but nothing is working. SD card is probably faulty.
So be aware, that that problem might be a first sign before your SD will break.
I think the fault is from some files somewhere in the microSD.. After going through the method i mentioned earlier, up until now my card is fine..

yup right, but be aware. I dont think that normal SD card should perform like that. I am using stock 2GB SD now, and it is ok!

My 16GB microSD is Sandisk and its 100% compatible with this device.. The Leo is doing something when loading the files creating some system files i suppose..

guess what? windows could not load sandisk microSD 16GB and I was already preparing to return it to e-shop, but I tried live cd of ubuntu 9.10.
It can read the card, it formatted it and it is working again! :-D

That's great, so you didn't have to replace it?
But strange, i've always been using the 16GB with my HD and now HD2.. The issue just occurred a week ago..
A day has passed and everything seems fine..
I hope it stays that way..
ok
I got exactly the same problem with my 16G Sandiskin and HD
and found that the problem was a damaged file in my SD
connect your SD to your computer throw card reader, using total commander or whatever, begin coping all SD files and directory to your hard disk, until get a message can't copy "file name", this will be the damage file, unmount the SD and mount it again and delete this file and your SD will be ok
ps: may be you have more than one damage file, try the this method until you can copy all SD files to your hard drive
When you have a write or read problem with a particular file, it usually points to more than just a corrupt file. In my experience with 4 16GB Sandisk microSD, it is the beginning of a failing card. The safest bet is to copy out the good files, reformat in your HD2 and copy the files back. But if it happens too often, it may be time to invest in a new card as your data is of primary concern.
The strange thing is that this usually occurs with the bigger cards, 8GB and 16GB. I never had this issue in the past with smaller cards.
I back up my card weekly or when I have updated large number of files just to be sure I have a valid set in my PC in case the card fails.

I know what you are talking about. Low format may help. I had the same issue with 2GB SD card 3 years ago (had to recover SD card to save few photos) and also on my DLSR with 4GB CF Card (linux helped to read the card). I don´t think it can be damaged so quickly as normal PC HDD, but when it happens often (damaged files on card), it may be a sign of something wrong with the card.
Unfortunately it happened again.. After a month of having everything under control i got the same problem.. The great news is I'm using windows 7 on my PC and when i plug my microSD card via usb reader, i get a choice of scanning and fixing the removable disk...
Now i'm happy without those annoying corrupted files..

"Waiting for SD card" problem will never end :(

Hello, I'm not glad that i have to post this topic, but i think the whole story about "Waiting for SD card" problem will never end. I have 3 SD's at home, even one not works.
What i tried:
- i read a lot of topics about this problematics
- i tried to format my cards to fat32
- i tried clean cards
- i tried to format with special tools
- i tried customize startup.txt with msmsdcc_1bit msmsdcc_fmax=14000000 msmsdcc_nopwrsave etc.
- i tried 5 versions of android, even one not works...
I will be very glad if someone helps me or gives me an advice what should i try
Thanks a lot!
Is any one of the sd cards you tried a "class 2"? Seems that class 6 sd cards have this problem.

no need to try more versions on your current SD cards. Go to look for some very old one, better smaller then 2GB.
I got 5 in my home, 2 of them works. Both of them are 2GB, bought 3 yrs ago.
None of new one could be used.
i realised the old versions of sd card works but the newer ones dun.
U shuld change SD card~~
Pretty Disappointing... I'm stuck too. I'm suprised it hasn't been fixed yet can't be that hard compared to everything else they've acheived.
I hope everyone involved keeps up the hard work but it'd be great for someone to revisit this problem.
its a hardware problem of the sd card, not a software problem.
it will never be fixed (its not possible).
its not like an sd card is too expensive ^^ just get another one...

I tend to disagree. SD is a well known standard on the market.
The card that I have works fine for more than a year in Windows Mobile with Touch HD card reader. Without a single problem during that time. So everything: operating system, SD card and HTC HD card reader are fine.
It doesn't work with Android, so there is something wrong. Either with SD card initialization procedure, drivers or operating system (Android).
Unfortunately, I can't effort using 2GB card. I'm using my phone e.g. for books reading, music, photos, games etc. It's not only a phone I hope that all these hard working Android guys can fix this issue.

we are not looking at the sd card when its detected by the operating system but by the device itself.
the problem might be that the device is simply not capable to use some sdcards without the proper drivers (which the os then provides). what im saying is: before you enter the os the device might not detect some particular sd cards, but once the os is booted, it does.
the issue here is simple: if the device doesnt support the sd card, the os wont boot, this has nothing to do with the os.
if you dont believe me:
try flashing a WM rom from the "problem sd card". u will see: it wont work.
now try booting android from the same sd card. u will see: it wont work.
now get another card u can boot android with.
now try flashing a WM rom from this sd card. u will see: it will work.
conclusion: its a hardware problem.
i must say im not an expert but im not stupid either. i tried what i explained myself and thats just how it is...
if someone has a better explanation please correct me

What you're saying may be right. I'm not an expert either, so these are only my conclusions.
I think that what may be failing is the HSPL (Bios) that most people here loaded. I'm pretty sure that I was able to flash from SD card on my stock ROM. At some point it stopped working. I'll try to rollback to stock SPL (I'm not sure how to do it, yet) and confirm. So changed HSPL may be the issue.
Another question is, why SD drivers in either case are not loaded with the boot image. I don't know Android internals, so I can't tell if this is possible. But it would help in this case.
In both cases I don't think this is hardware issue that can't be resolved.

Sorry. You are wrong. I am frequently flash my phone using SD card with HSPL. But the card also face problem with Android. So definitely not the hardware problem.

lucky guy
From my personal experience on my Kaiser I can confirm that newer SD cards do indeed seem to cause problems in Android, especially with installing or running from SD.
I have 3 SD cards I normally use for my phones, the newest a 4Gb class 6, which I have never been able to use for Android on Kaiser or Blackstone, I can't even flash with it, it just never works, using it for data storage works fine, just can't run Android from SD or Flash with it, the other 2 are 2Gb class 2's, both work just fine for flashing, and work great when using them for running Android builds from SD on Kais and Blac hardware.
My conclusions? Well I fall into the 'hardware problem' camp, mostly, since I can't flash either Winmo or Android with the class 6, it may be the card, but I wonder sometimes if it's the capacity, since both the class 2's are almost the same age as the class 6, all are sdhc, all 3 are from the same manufacturer , (SanDisk), in fact the only real difference is the capacity.
Waiting for SD Card
I have also tried a Transcend 8 GB SD Card and it doesn't work.
The same files on a Tanscend 1GB SD Card work just fine, so it's definitely a hardware problem caused by the card.
I've tried everything - formatting the card with different tools and different cluster sizes, partitioning the card below 4GB - all without success.
For all you guys out there with the "waiting for SD card" problem: Get a different (small) card !! - It's worth it !
what about this - copy files in the package into device internal memory and boot from there(i don´t know where to change booting directory in cfg...). if it created data.img on the sdcard, it would be fine solution...

Not sure it's that simple... once winmo is killed, the internal memory would have to be accessed natively by Android. It could be different for every device (where as SD is a standard, device agnostic format, internal memory isn't)
Whilst most HTC devices will work in an almost identical manner, there is no guarantee of what the internal memory is (it could actually be a HDD in theory).
I had this problem with my Transcend 8GB SD card, nothing solved it so I traded it for a Sandisk 8GB SD card with a colleague.
Works fine now. ^^

I'm using a Transcend 8GB card...the one that came with my blackstone with no problems at all. Don't think I did anything special though, formatted to FAT32, installed android from a CAB (in this thread) loaded Android and then I copied my WinMo files back to the SD card as well.
One 2GB sandisk card I had though didn't work at all until I formatted it to FAT32 under linux, then it worked fine in WinMo and Android.
A friend also suggested to me trying to reduce the 'allocation unit size' when formatting the card but I've not tried that approach.
maybe u can try format SD Card to FAT (not FAT32 formatted i think.. maybe it FAT16)! i have 8gb and 2gb SD Cards.. and that all cards not work untill i formatted my 2gb SD Card to FAT!

Sandisk 8GB micro SDHC card problem

Hello,
I use a Sandisk 8GB micro SDHC card in my Tattoo. The first problem is that the card is not always recognized. After a reboot it works mostly fine again. The second problem is that i lost sometimes all my data on the card without any reason, it is just gone in a moment, I have already formatted the card in my PC but without any success. It is also not possible to do a format in my Tattoo (not working). Any suggestions how to handle with this? Thanks a lot, Mark
try formating the card i have the same card and it works sharply.. (format twice. )
Oops
I was thinking about buying this card... But now I think I won't risk :\

Never had anything other than a FAT partition, and when I try to fomat it (on the phone, in Windows, in Linux) I can't. :/ I think my 4gb card was fine, but a bit scared to check now!

[Q] Microsd card not being recognised.

The 8gb card that came with my Desire HD works perfectly as you expect. But i wanted to upgrade so i bought a class 4 Kingston 16gb microsd card.
So i unmount the card, take it out, then put the new one in... and when i go to storage management it has unknown for everything. When i take the card out the OS says "Card removed, insert new one", i put the old one in and it works perfectly.
I then reformatted with windows and made it 16kb fat32 and the exact same thing happens.
The card works perfectly on the computer and is not an ebay fake.
Any suggestions?
Edit- i just loaded up CWM and it easily saw my sd card. So i dont know whats going on there. I partitioned it using CWM and now am installing a different rom and hopefully the problem will be fixed without me even knowing what the issue was.
Still any suggestions will be appreciated.

Most of the steps you took, make sense to me, but I am not an expert on this.
One question, can you let all of us know what the result was, after you flashed a different ROM? Might help someone with similar issues.

Class UHS I/class 10 micro sd compatibility.

Hello,
I've recently bought a Sandisk micro sd 32Gb class 10 for my HD2. The exact model is SDSDQU-032G-U46A.
I installed a rom via Native Sd method and everything ok until a couple of hours or so, and the phone hangs up. I had to pull of the battery and reboot. And then the same problem again. I released the micro sd and put in into the pc. To my surprise, the system ask me to format it
I reformatted it to fat32 but the issue is still there. I tried formatting the card with Sdformater, with minitool partition wizard, and other tools but everytime the same problem.
So finally, I thought it was a card failure and decided to ask for a refund. I received a new card, same model, and to my disappointment the new one was worse than the other one. I couldn't even install the rom, with a lot of partition errors. So I believe that there is a compatibility problem.
Anyone who has tried this card model can tell me his experience? What do you think, is it really a compatibility issue or I had bad luck?
Thank you for any help.
There is another guy having some problems with the sandisk class 10 32GB. He changed the sd, and everything worked flawlessly.
I'm not saying the sdcard is the problem, I'm saying that class 10 32GB is too good.
(Btw, I'm using the same class 10 ultra-sandisk but 16gb, and I never had a reboot on nativesd)

Hey I think I am using the same card as yours. The model number is SDSDQUA-032G-U46A. My card is working flawlessly. I have installed both Windows Phone 7 and Boxmax ROM . The SD card has 4 partitions. However, I do have issues with my phone, but it is not related to SD card. I bought the phone one month back from eBay. Well, I was unlucky and from the first day the phone has thermal problems, which has been discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982454
The seller probably sent me a refurbished piece. The phone hangs whenever I do something cpu intensive. So just a thought. Are you sure that it is problem with SD card? Or may be you can try some other ROM.
I'm pretty sure that it is the micro sd. I installed 3 different roms, all with the same result. I have tried same roms in other card and perfect.
Searching on the web I found this site http://www.sandiskcards.com/ where you can see which card is compatible with any devices. Regarding the HD2, it supports up to 32GB class 4 Sandisk micro sd. So I suppose that it's a compatiblity problem and there is nothing I can do about it.
However, there is people using a class 10 ultra-sandisk without issues at all. I'm confused.
Other who can share their experience?
Thanks.
Hey pepemonje,
did you ever try to fix permissions from within the android you are running? I had similar problems (programs being terminated and more) and tried to fix permissions from 4EXT and clockwork, but that didn't help. After fixing permissions with "NativeSDMultiboot" - "Tools" -> "Fix Permissions" those problems were mostly gone.
I'm not sure if that helps, its just a guess.
Regards

There are reports that NativeSD roms are not working very well with the SD card formatted via the mini tool. I myself encountered your issue. There are lots of FC and hangs up. I corrected this by simply performing a full wipe of data data/factory reset via the recovery. This will wipe out your data and format your Nand cache, SD Card Ext4 partition and linux swap if any in your SD, but will not touch your FAT32 windows partition and will remain intact. After that perform a fresh install and you should be good.
