"Waiting for SD card" problem will never end :( - Touch HD General

Hello, I'm not glad that i have to post this topic, but i think the whole story about "Waiting for SD card" problem will never end. I have 3 SD's at home, even one not works.
What i tried:
- i read a lot of topics about this problematics
- i tried to format my cards to fat32
- i tried clean cards
- i tried to format with special tools
- i tried customize startup.txt with msmsdcc_1bit msmsdcc_fmax=14000000 msmsdcc_nopwrsave etc.
- i tried 5 versions of android, even one not works...
I will be very glad if someone helps me or gives me an advice what should i try
Thanks a lot!

Is any one of the sd cards you tried a "class 2"? Seems that class 6 sd cards have this problem.

no need to try more versions on your current SD cards. Go to look for some very old one, better smaller then 2GB.
I got 5 in my home, 2 of them works. Both of them are 2GB, bought 3 yrs ago.
None of new one could be used.

i realised the old versions of sd card works but the newer ones dun.

U shuld change SD card~~

Pretty Disappointing... I'm stuck too. I'm suprised it hasn't been fixed yet can't be that hard compared to everything else they've acheived.
I hope everyone involved keeps up the hard work but it'd be great for someone to revisit this problem.

its a hardware problem of the sd card, not a software problem.
it will never be fixed (its not possible).
its not like an sd card is too expensive ^^ just get another one...
have a look at this thread

I tend to disagree. SD is a well known standard on the market.
The card that I have works fine for more than a year in Windows Mobile with Touch HD card reader. Without a single problem during that time. So everything: operating system, SD card and HTC HD card reader are fine.
It doesn't work with Android, so there is something wrong. Either with SD card initialization procedure, drivers or operating system (Android).
Unfortunately, I can't effort using 2GB card. I'm using my phone e.g. for books reading, music, photos, games etc. It's not only a phone I hope that all these hard working Android guys can fix this issue.

we are not looking at the sd card when its detected by the operating system but by the device itself.
the problem might be that the device is simply not capable to use some sdcards without the proper drivers (which the os then provides). what im saying is: before you enter the os the device might not detect some particular sd cards, but once the os is booted, it does.
the issue here is simple: if the device doesnt support the sd card, the os wont boot, this has nothing to do with the os.
if you dont believe me:
try flashing a WM rom from the "problem sd card". u will see: it wont work.
now try booting android from the same sd card. u will see: it wont work.
now get another card u can boot android with.
now try flashing a WM rom from this sd card. u will see: it will work.
conclusion: its a hardware problem.
i must say im not an expert but im not stupid either. i tried what i explained myself and thats just how it is...
if someone has a better explanation please correct me

What you're saying may be right. I'm not an expert either, so these are only my conclusions.
I think that what may be failing is the HSPL (Bios) that most people here loaded. I'm pretty sure that I was able to flash from SD card on my stock ROM. At some point it stopped working. I'll try to rollback to stock SPL (I'm not sure how to do it, yet) and confirm. So changed HSPL may be the issue.
Another question is, why SD drivers in either case are not loaded with the boot image. I don't know Android internals, so I can't tell if this is possible. But it would help in this case.
In both cases I don't think this is hardware issue that can't be resolved.

Sorry. You are wrong. I am frequently flash my phone using SD card with HSPL. But the card also face problem with Android. So definitely not the hardware problem.

Hello
I have 2 card's, one 8GB from Transcend and one 4GB from Kingston, and the kingston only works with android!
UPDATE: Transcend Class 6, Kingston Class 4

lucky guy

From my personal experience on my Kaiser I can confirm that newer SD cards do indeed seem to cause problems in Android, especially with installing or running from SD.
I have 3 SD cards I normally use for my phones, the newest a 4Gb class 6, which I have never been able to use for Android on Kaiser or Blackstone, I can't even flash with it, it just never works, using it for data storage works fine, just can't run Android from SD or Flash with it, the other 2 are 2Gb class 2's, both work just fine for flashing, and work great when using them for running Android builds from SD on Kais and Blac hardware.
My conclusions? Well I fall into the 'hardware problem' camp, mostly, since I can't flash either Winmo or Android with the class 6, it may be the card, but I wonder sometimes if it's the capacity, since both the class 2's are almost the same age as the class 6, all are sdhc, all 3 are from the same manufacturer , (SanDisk), in fact the only real difference is the capacity.

Waiting for SD Card
I have also tried a Transcend 8 GB SD Card and it doesn't work.
The same files on a Tanscend 1GB SD Card work just fine, so it's definitely a hardware problem caused by the card.
I've tried everything - formatting the card with different tools and different cluster sizes, partitioning the card below 4GB - all without success.
For all you guys out there with the "waiting for SD card" problem: Get a different (small) card !! - It's worth it !

what about this - copy files in the package into device internal memory and boot from there(i don´t know where to change booting directory in cfg...). if it created data.img on the sdcard, it would be fine solution...

Not sure it's that simple... once winmo is killed, the internal memory would have to be accessed natively by Android. It could be different for every device (where as SD is a standard, device agnostic format, internal memory isn't)
Whilst most HTC devices will work in an almost identical manner, there is no guarantee of what the internal memory is (it could actually be a HDD in theory).

I had this problem with my Transcend 8GB SD card, nothing solved it so I traded it for a Sandisk 8GB SD card with a colleague.
Works fine now. ^^

I'm using a Transcend 8GB card...the one that came with my blackstone with no problems at all. Don't think I did anything special though, formatted to FAT32, installed android from a CAB (in this thread) loaded Android and then I copied my WinMo files back to the SD card as well.
One 2GB sandisk card I had though didn't work at all until I formatted it to FAT32 under linux, then it worked fine in WinMo and Android.
A friend also suggested to me trying to reduce the 'allocation unit size' when formatting the card but I've not tried that approach.

maybe u can try format SD Card to FAT (not FAT32 formatted i think.. maybe it FAT16)! i have 8gb and 2gb SD Cards.. and that all cards not work untill i formatted my 2gb SD Card to FAT!

SDcard problem

Hello. I have a problem regarding my vizibility of the sd card on the device. I used to manage it on HTC touch HD, and now, I want to use it on Diamond 2. But it is not recognized by Diamond 2. I've format it quick, low (longer), fat, fat32, ntfs, but without succes. I've installed 3 different ROM's, but still nothing. On the PC is working without any problems. It is an 4GB microSD HC card
you mean your TD2 can't even detect the microSD when you go to File Explorer?
yes. i cannot see at all the microsd on my device. only on the PC.
and i've tried also 2 different microSD cards: 1gb, and 2gb (Nokia this one) and is working with those one. I've tried my microSD card on a Nokia and htc p3300 and is working.

I presume the roms were not loaded via the microSD, then? Do you see the microSD cards via ActiveSync?
nop, not at all. I cannot see the microSD in any other way (not even microsoft active center - Windows 7). But, those 2 microSD (1, 2gb) i can see. And yes, i didn't install the ROM from the microSD.
solve it by replacing it with a 2gb sd card.
the memory card is not me out with the official wm 6.5 ROM
what can I do to boot the card??
ah no problem of card because started the card with the adapter to the PC and read it perfectly.
I have D2 and the card is the Kingston with 4Gb....
I can help my problem??
Hello,
My problem is solve, I changed the card....
At last I found people with the same BIG problem of mine!!! I NEVER succeded in using ANY (nor cooked nor official) WM6.5 version and I am getting quite desperate So, it appears that 4GB Kingston SD is not "WM6.5 compatible"..I tried also Sandisk 2GB SD with the same miserable result...Lucky me!!
If it solves the issue, I am prone to buy a new SD card, but how does it have to be to work correctly?? what specs, what size is supported, is there a recommended brand?
My forum search led me to a closed thread and here, is this the only "SD and WM6.5 problem" related thread?

Strange, because I have the same memory cards, Kingston 4 GB, and I never had any problems. Currently I have WM6.5 official and works well.

Thanks for feedback!! Yes I formatted it in all possible ways, with PC adapter and within the device . As I feared, there is not a general rule to determine wether a SD card will work with WM6.5 or not and I am not rich enough to buy SD cards until one woks
I've heard it has something to do with the country in which the card was made. China was OK and Korea wasn't, or somthing like that. Don't really know whether that's correct though.
thanks, going to check that, ANY SUGGESTION IS WELCOME !!
What is the class of your memory card? Mine is class 4
I think it's a class 4, but if you tell me how to be sure I'll check better. Maybe using a diagnostics software?
EDIT:I just took the SD card out, I can read "SDC4/4GB"...maybe C4 stands for category 4..Again, help much appreciated!
From Topaz I don't know if you can see the class. It is in the packaging.
what's your actual ROM?
ITA WM 6.5 Original
ah ok, already tried that without success..and that was when I got disppointed the most

SD card corruption

My SD card is not functioning. It just happened one day and it is not recognized by HD2 anymore. The MAGLDR will not properly open it and it is unusable for my WP7 also. This happened while running Android of the SD card.
The card is the original Sandisk 16G. When I connect it to a PC through the phone or SD adapater it shows an unformatted partition of 30MB. EASUS will not recognize anything else either. That 30MB partition I cannot format. Not even through Pananosic SD formatter.
Is there anything I can do to recover my SD card. I don't care about the data.
Thank you.

Yes I bought it of e-bay. Slightly used. I though the Sandisk was original.
You probably can not format it because of one ofcthe two following reasons.
One WP7 formatscyour SD card using RAID (Google it if you want to know more) so it can use your SD card as internal memory. You have to useva formatting software that can remove RAID. Or stick your micro SD card in a micro to mini SD card adaptor and then stick the adaptor with you SD card in it in a digital camera and format it. Then you can use standard formatting software to reformat using Fat 32.
Two WP7 has fried your SD card and it is time for a new one.
Conect it to the pc via a card reader download and run AESEUS partition managere free version and full format the sd card as fat 32 primary partition, if the card is recoverable that will work - or buy a new one from amazon or play - never- nerver buy from ebay as it could always be a fake or cheap copy
Today I received a 16GB Kingston micro sd to replace my fried scandisk.
I was not able to recover anything from the old SD card. I hope kingston will be proven better.
Window 7/Vista Fix.
Command Prompt
(dont type the quotes in)
Type "DISKPART" press [enter]
Type "List disks" and [enter]
find your usb or sd card in this list but be careful, you dont want to wipe out the wrong partition. Generally it is the last disk.
Type "Select disc #" [enter] (Replace the # with the device value in list ie: 1,2,3... ect)
Type "Clean" then [enter]
then to recreate the original partition type
"create partition primary" then [enter]
This will wipe all the partitions including wp7 off the sd card and then allow you to reformat the sdcard with its original capacity.
it's happened to many with sandisk users, even me.
I sent it back to the company that sold me the phone and the card and they said it was busted, I replaced it with a card from another brand and that solved it.

I don't think it has anything to do with the fact it is the one that came from with te HD2, although it was reported by many they had problems with the original SD cards. I think it has more to do with the fact that the OP was running WP7 on thier HD2. WP7 is known to kill SD cards.

[Q] SD card doesn't work after reboot

Hey guys,
I've searched for a while but can't find a solution for my problem..
After flashing XBmod-Yuki rom V 2.00 everything works fine (also with older NoDo-roms) but when I change the region&language settings into something different, there's either a restart loop or a storage card error.
I've tried several ways of flashing, including this way.
My SD card: Transcend 16GB class6. Btw, a 2GB Sandisk works like a charm..
Is there any help out there??
Kind regards...
It could just be the card, SD cards seem to play a huge part of wp7, there are many problems that can crop up, sometimes you might not see them until you fill up the card to a certain level or the moon is full just depends... Not an answer but a possibility
Sent from my HD2 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I think I had the same issue today, when I turned it on today, I had a SD Card problem. I pulled out the battery, re booted the phone, arrived in the main menu then.. it freezed! =/. I pulled out the battery, pulled out the SD Card and plugged it again and now it works fine!

Didn't work for me.
Unfortunately, everything's fine after a hardreset but with a reboot (manually or to make an update/flash a cab) there is this storage card error!!
before you do anything after a flash, sync with zune and dump a few hundred meg of music on it, my card is unstable until i do that.
HD2 does not recognize a brand new 8GB Sandisk.
Any help please - my phone does not seem to recognize any SD cards anymore since I installed WM7.
I even bought a brand new 8GB card, and the phone does not recognize it at all.
The 4GB SD card that used to work fine, is also not detected anymore, but that could be due to it being encrypted now _ although I formatted with the Panasonic SD format tool.
I put 4GB of music on it - no (positive) effect...

No SD Card detected however .. (please help)

Hi,
(Strange problem - OS does not detect SD Card however Bootloader does and loads ROM from SD Card)
I have a strange problem from this morning. I had WP7 mango installed which was working pretty ok apart from a few restarts if the bottom part of phone got warm/hot, so I kept it in from of AC (This idea usually works with HD2)
This morning, WP7 gave an error saying it can not detect the 16 GIG SD Card, I reformatted SD Card using Nokia phone/FAT32 and re-installed WP7 however it gave a message saying No Storage Card present.
I have also tried installing WM6.5 but that too doesnt not detect SD Card.
On top of above, strange thing is that I have installed 3 different version on WM6.5 stock ROM using SD Card method (pressing VolDn methos while powering phone up to boot load ROM from SD Card) and it works perfectly fine however the OS does not detect SD Card.
Has any body faced this problem and have a solution?
Or does any body know of a solution to this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Ash.

I have searched the forum as well as other sites, and have tried re-formatting sd card as well to no luck.

We're all too surprised you managed to flash using a 16gb SD card.,,, normally anything 8gb or larger won't flash nbh files, so your problem is pretty strange.
I lost the shipped 8GB SD card more than year back and since then I am using 16GB SD card with HD2 and it worked perfectly.
Does OS like WP7/WM6.5 uses mount in some way to have card and contents available? If so, can it be mounted using MAGLDR or CWM, since the bootloader which IPL can read the SD Card.
Cheers,
Ash
indeed this is a baffling problem. can't think of conclusive reasons why the tri-color bootloader can see the sd card but OS (WM6.5, WP7, Android) cannot!
i am assuming you have just ONE partition on the sd card...? can you check and tell us the format of the filesystem, i.e. FAT or FAT32...? i think FAT isn't even possible on a 16GB card...it will likely be formatted as FAT32, but lets check to be sure.
Hi ASCIIker,
Many thanks for your response, the SD Card is FAT32 formatted. I have tried both 4gb and 16gb cards but WM6.5 says No Card found.
See screen shots attached. I have also attached screen shot of version showing Stock ROM flashed earlier today using SD Card.
I am not too sure, could it be some thing like mounting of SD Card under these OS's or under SPL which is not able to mount these SD Cards,
The problem started when phone was running WP7 Mango 8107 but it used to crash if it got hot and re-boot on its own, may e one of those automatic re-boots, the OS unmounted Sd card. When I looked at it in the morning, it was showing an error message of no storage card present and the options available were emergency call and shut down. I tried re-booting it 1-2 times and it still showed same message and then I tried loading WM6.5 from SD Card using LEOIMG.nbh which worked and left me confused.
I have also tried USB Mass Storage option of MAGLDR 1.13 however that doesn't work either.
I have never used CLk but I can try that if there is a way to access SD Card using USB with it.
Any suggestions for reviving it back are welcome.
Cheers,
Ash

It is worth a shot but i suspect you it still will not detect the SD card. Just click on the HD2 guide in my sig and scroll down to post #3 and look for the section "Updated version of clk with CWM built in" and click on the link that takes you to the download of that version. Then the bottom of post #1 and read the section "Flashing cLK via SD card". This will have clk with Clockwork Mod installed on your device. Then boot your device and hold down the home button at the same time, this will boot you into CWM and theb select "Mounts and storage" then select"mount USB storage". If you do not see the contents of your SD card on your computer then it is not working. Make sure to try "install zip from sdcard" as well. Just see if it reads the SD card that way.
Also I take it from your posts that you have tried otion #4 USB Mass storage in MAGLDR. So like I said I doubt CWM will see it in mass storage either.
Seeing as WP7 uses the SD card for the internal memory and is constantly using the SD card reader on the device at high speeds. It may just be a case of the SD card reader not being operable with the OS anymore. I mean it has to work at a certain speed level I think for the OS to be able to use it, and maybe the bootloader does not require that same speed. Or it may just be a case of the reader not being able to mount the SD card as read and write both still so it just will not mount it. Like I said these are just shots in the dark. But if it is a problem with it mounting in either read or write it could cause this problem I beleive.
Hi T-Macgnolia, thank you for this detailed reply. I was able to install CLK using SD Card method however it does not recognize SD Card nor does it mount it. It shows an error message - see attached screen shot.
I was wondering if a faster SD Card like Class 6 8 GB would make any difference to current state.

if you're getting the same behaviour with all your cards, then its likely to be a problem with the phone, and messing with this class of that sized card is probably a dead end. (thats not to say you shouldnt try if you have cards available, of course!)
To my mind its gotta be one of two things
1 - some problem with the sd controller, that is allowing low level access to the card, so flashing works, but not allowing the higher level drivers full speed access to the card, in much the same way that a PC accesses the hard disk much faster during a normal boot than it does with a 'safe mode' boot.
2 - a virus/glitch/witchcraft/wp7/other has corrupted all your sd cards in some fashion.
Just guesses, of course.
Good luck.

Cheers,
Ash

I agree with Samsamuel completely, it seemsit is something wrong with the SD card reader/controller that is not letting it read the SD card at a higher speed. Or something really strange and funky has happened to all of your SD cards. But I feel it is the first thing and not the later. If you want to try another SD card, as odd as it sounds, I suggest you try a lower class SD card like a class 2 if you can find on. But then again you may already have one and already tried it I do not know. One thing for sure it seems like a hardware issue and not a software or faulty SD card issue.
I had this exact same problem, in the end I ended up going back to original leo Winmo 6.5, then starting over with HSPL - Magldr - CWM - Android (though I guess WP7 will work too).
I don't know what caused the problem, I just put all these anomalies down to the bad nand blocks on my device.
I'll also note that mass storage in Magldr has never worked for me and still doesn't, the drive mounts but crashes on transfer of any files, but within CWM and Android it works now.
If you have exhausted all other options and have not already tried this then it maybe worth a shot. Good luck.
Thanks michael-jb,
I have tried all these options. I have tried installing different WP7 again though, which I will do tomorrow or day after.
Cheers,
Ash

32GB Transcend card not recognised

hi, anyone using a 32GB Transcend card?
win 7 was ok with a 2GB Sandisk and an unmarked 4GB card, dual boot with android.
are some roms better than others or is there anything else i can do or is that just how it is?
tried full clean format of card etc.
did you try insert card on already installed WP7 or you flashed ROM with card inside?
you cant only insert card... you need to make hard reset or flash ROM to use new card...
http://www.wpcentral.com/first-offi...-certified-microsd-card-announced-sandisk-8gb
same with my 16g Transcend, WP7 doesn't recognize it while flashing, what I did was use an 8g Sandisk then just made an image copy of that to the Transcend then it is OK, but during the flashing it wont see a Transcend card
you guys need to realize it's not always about the sd card that causes problems. the particular wp7 rom flavor causes incompatibilities. also, you can't copy existing wp7 sd images and expect it to work. just make sure the sd card is formatted in any of the std windows/dos formats...fat16, fat32, ntfs.
also, i've never encountered sd issues with 4 different brands ranging from 8gb to 32gb sizes of sd cards using yuki rom, but these same cards have issues when trying to flash pdaj, ansar, and hd2o wp7 roms.
BTW
if I flash WP7 using the Transcend it wont work
if I flash Android using the Transcend it will work

that goes without.saying. android doesn't have such strict requirements as wp7. as i stated in previous post...other wp7 roms other than yuki rom seem to be prone to sd card issues.

hi,
@dxdy: as i said in my post, i dual booted with android on 2 other different cards ok (by imaging and resizing and adjusting partitions)
bad thing was losing half my sd just for win 7. and i didnt like the idea of swapping cards.
also, the battery issue does not seem to have been bottomed out with its appalling standby times.
thanks though to hjhjhj for that info. that was just what i wanted to know. interesting but strange that different roms see the cards differently.
locking an os to a removable storage card has to be one of the worst features i have seen.
at least with our HD2's we still have other options.
will fire up win 7 again and give it another go.
