Going from a Rogers Captivate to a Bell Atrix...Worth it? - Atrix 4G General

Kinda contemplating on whether I should or not. Rogers hasnt been all to great with me and phones over the pass years and its getting really annoying. So was thinking that maybe, just maybe..its time for a change. Seen a couple of Atrix reviews and I think the thing that really got my attention was the whole laptop or mediahub things you could do. Question is, are all the things said about the Atrix overhyped? And whether or not if I should make the switch?

I had an AT&T Atrix on Rogers and it worked just fine. But since I messed that one up (only temporarily, hopefully) I took the plunge and went with Bell. They have a deal with Telus and piggy back off each other's networks and inherently have better coverage. As much as I blasted Bell years ago, they're really taking it up a notch.
So far I have no quarrels. I had a 6GB data plan and Retention rate plan with Rogers and will switch back during the grace period if things go sour. But so far I don't know if they could really upset me as much as Rogers had in the past. They'd have to be pretty complacent and arrogant to do that.

wiyhout question, make the switch.

Hopefully it turns out to be a good choice. Just hoping the phone wasnt overhyped.

I had the captivate from Rogers, switched to bell atrix, never looked back since. I do wish I had not renewed my contract with Rogers when I got the cappy because after I learned bell was pretty much getting the better android phones than Rogers I would've switched to bell. Seems like bells line up of phones so far favor more androids which is awesome in my book. They got the ATRIX a few months after att did and they recently got incredible s which just was released not too long ago. All Rogers has going for right now is captivate, and SE arc / play which isn't available yet, and, more recently and arguably the best phone to get from them is nexus s (they have other mid range android phones but not really significant compared to an atrix). Unless you are interested in any of them I would suggest going to bell to get the atrix or even the incredible s. Lately I have been getting bad reception from Rogers..would lose 3g pretty frequently. I am unsure about bells network though..

It's not over hyped. If anything, people slam it way too hard and give it a lot of unnecessary criticism.
I'm personally one who *****es and moans about tiny little gripes, and even I don't have any huge complaints. The phone is a bit smooth and without a case it's a bit slippery lol... there's my big complaint. Everyone else who's crying and bringing them back are ****ing whiners.

Lol thanks for the info. Gotta say the one thing I love about it is hooking it up to an HD TV or the Lapdock add-on. Guess imma make that switch then.

definitely not overhyped. with the exception of the bootloader, there is absolutely nothing to complain about with this phone. Motorola seem to be updating it already so it looks like they are taking people seriously now.

I have the Bell Vibrant, which is better than the Rogers Captivate, and still made the switch to the Atrix

Coming from an iPhone 4.. thing flies. You will be impressed when you actually power it on , use the browser and see that it hardly crashes on a youtube video, and how buttery smooth it plays. I use a pretty html 5 intensive site, and had a flash site running and it was still smooth and running beautifully. Only complaint is battery, but maybe you'll be fortunate enough to get a better one. im still waiting for my replacement

Where are all Captivate dev team?

Ok i been looking through vibrant forum and they seem to have organized a dev team already. Where is the captivate dev team? I wish I had some knowledge of all this info about rooting and building custom roms.
I am afraid after purchasing the Captivate I will be patiently waiting for a custom rom.
Please prove me wrong. Let's get it going guys.
lets see...
att customer base > tmobile customer base
Captivate > Vibrant
Price of captivate at att > Pricing at tmobile
Lastly its all a big happy galaxy familly so once one of the carriers gets some suga the rest will most likely follow as well.
I know I know. I have a feeling once vibrant has a custom rom I am sure we can use thier rom and mood to use on the captivate. Maybe? I don't know if it is ghat easy but....... I wish there was someone who can tell me this.
Dev team???? Where u at?
It will most likely occur like you say. Dev team is probably still playing with all their other amazing smartphones untill this gets shipped out to them
Isn't the Galaxy S the next big smartphone? I guess i just need to follow the Vibrant group or the Galaxy S forum.
I honestly do not understand why there are so many sub forums for the galaxy s. IE: dream, rogers, g1, adp1 = 1 forum. The galaxy s, facinate, vibrant, epic, and captivate should be in one forum since for the most part they share identical hardware.

I agree. It seems that the dev and software forums could easily be merged. The whole "I modded the Galaxy S root file" in the Vibrant forum and subsequent "I modded the Vibrant root file" in the Captivate forum stuff is the perfect example why there should be a merged dev forum. Not so logical with the accessories forum, but I think it could be done. I wouldn't want the general forums to be merged though. I don't think Vibrant fans want or need to see all our store reports, price controversies and sideloading hacks.

Lol towards the end of your post.
Either way, it will if the vibrant root team makes a good rom it will be easy enough to port to the captivate. I am sure in the community spirit of android the US galaxy S roms will be a collaborative effort.
Yes agreed, ATT tells customers JACK SHEET
hah I was lucky enough to use the captivate at my local ATT yesterday (Saturday) morning for about 20 mins, which finalized my decision to ditch my HTC Desire and pick up one of these about 10 mins ago online (they're up now of course starting today) only $499 out of contract, sure as hell beats the $620 I paid for the desire a mere 1.5 months ago.
If you're lucky like me and have been out of contract with ATT (been ATT member since 2003 and out of contract since 05 here) you still get access to unlimited data of course, so that's a great bonus if you buy out of contract with no commitment.
Side by side, my poor HTC desire was absolutely NO match for the Captivate in all areas from the camera to application reaction times to definite lag on the HTC device when multiple widgets are being run. The camera on the Captivate is hands down much more clear and smooth with videos. I got to take them outside where my desire was completely unviewable at full brightness, although not 100% viewable, I could actually use the samsung in full sun.
I'd imagine they'll all start pouring in the next few days as it just dropped Today, very glad to have picked this up, Sorry HTC, maybe this winter. (You can flip these things on ebay and make more than what you originally paid so yeah) Phone Recycle is pretty easy

Wow, that much Desire is alot worse than the Captivate!! I was debating which one should I order (telstra Desire of course) but after I read your comment I made up my mind!
YEs check it out
just for a quick show, here you go, an N1 compared and benchmarked somewhat to show a comparison of CPU/GPU power on both.. N1 can't even run it hah. I was skeptical until I went and used one, had to get it. Get mine tomorrow

just shows the difference between the two as well... as well the Captivate is cheaper hands down

Well the size of att customer base certainly is larger than tmobile. But I think if you're on att and you have a smartphone for the most part you have a blackberry or iphone. This is the first real android phone to come to att. I'm thinking its going to take a while for att to build up a large loyal android fan base.
Captivate and Vibrant, one is not better than the other, they are equal, only difference is in the shape of the case.
Pricing is no different either, 199 on contract, 499 off contract.

ditto man seriosly there seems to be a TON of noobs because AT&T has never had a real android phone where as tmobile has the phone with the largest communitys(nexus,G1,mytouch) =less noobs i myself have been with android since day one. infact systoxity seems like a noob already by not researching any of the facts that clearly show that TMO is better for android than AT&T
Says who? Hah obviously SPRINT would be by FAR the best choice if that is how you want to word it. They have only digi 4G network and the best Droid phones by far. Samsung EPIC 4G? EVO ring a bell? HAH! It's there to see... AT&T doesn't tell their reps or customers jack sheet untilt he phone is out. Sprint has their devices out and available to use before purchase. AT&T is just butt buddies with APPLE. The days of Apple dictatorships on AT&T are done (or they wouldn't have picked up the Captivate which is on par with the iphone 4) I'd say AT&T stepped up for once, now everyone is happy with a super device.
The Android Devs are ALMOST ALL GOING TO BE USING THE VIBRANT!
WHY?
Because T-mobile has less expensive service (and crappier - but, that isn't the point here) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:
T-mobile came out with the G1 and had the ONLY Android phone around for about a YEAR!!
So, the people really interested in Android.... Went to T-mobile. And, they are still there. WHY?
Take a look at our software - we have no true FM radio - just the pay as you go ATT CRAPPY one! The Vibrant has a REAL FM TUNER. I put it on my phone but, I think the Captivate is missing some drivers - so, doesn't work yet. AND, WHAT A LOAD OF CRAPWARE ON THE ATT Captivate!
So, happy to root it and remove it!
Yes, we'll be hanging on the Vibrant developers shirt tails for awhile.

The vibrant is faster than a desire? Hmm.. how come people here in the forums are complaining of it lagging? And the lack of a flash is a deal breaker for me, wanted to.get one as a second phone, but decided not to coz of the reported lag and lack of flash

I have a N1 and just bought my wife a Captivate.
Some observations:
1. The captivate isn't laggy if you switch launchers. I also think this is a general Galaxy-S issue that can be resolved by editing a file. (Search Modaco).
2. The screen is just gorgeous.
3. It does come with Flash Lite. Same as desire pre Froyo.
Ill be getting a captivate in a couple of weeks and will work on roms for it. The aria is my first android device and we've got some good development going with it. Im going to get a system dump of the captivate later tonight and look through it. Ill see if i can get some roms ported for you guys soon.

Right Decision?

Hey guys,
I wanted the nexus one ever since it first got announced. unforunately for the first month and a half it was exclusive with tmo bands. Come around March, i heard the ATT version was released and i told myself i was gonna get it. I put up my iphone 3gs and to my surprise, nobody bit. they were all trying to trade their iphones for the nexus one att version, just like i was.
fast forward to last week, i bought a htc desire (telus, so it works with att) from a friend. It was a awesome phone, but the nexus one bug was still inside me. Everytime i would see comparison videos against the desire, i would tell myself how pretty and attractive the nexus one is. I couldnt take it anymore, so i went on ebay, searched all day today, and than right when i thought all hope was lost, one ad popped up. "never used, refurbished by HTC Nexus One ATT". I did the BIN which was 425 with 15 dollar shipping. Now selling the desire for 550ish. My question is, with tech advancing so fast these days, did i make a good investment in buying a mint att nexus one for a whopping 425? or should i have waited for the dual core phones from samsung.
be brutally honest guys. and btw, the nexus one is going to share primary phone duties with my iphone 4.
I think it's worth it. The N1 is amazing.

I agree. The N1 is still the best all rounder phone (notification lights, great GPS receiver, perfect size). Unless you play very graphic intensive games on your phone...you'll be just fine without a dual-core processor. I just feel sorry for your poor iPhone 4..you're gonna be so mad at the little things it can't do like long kinetic scrolling in the browser, lack of configurable color LED notifications, flash in the browser, ability to change to different notification sounds....
In my opinion, currently, there is not a single phone that, in overall quality, surpasses the nexus one.
It's just "pure" - no UI additions, no craziness. Just solid, beautiful phone. Oh, and it just feels so good to the touch.
There are phones that has advantages over it here and there.. but overall, N1 is still the king of the hill for me.
It sounds like you made a little money selling the desire and getting the N1 so I guess it wasn't dumb. I personally think the desire is a bit cooler looking than the nexus so I would have kept that. They're basically exactly the same, right?
I really like my nexus one. Recently the battery life has even become better on the stock rom. However if someone was about to buy it now I would tell them not to bother. The touch screen sucks — it can only detect two points and gets confused doing that, it also gets messed up when the phone warms up in my car dock. The screen is also nearly impossible to see in bright daylight.
Not sure what android phone I'd prefer though. Wish there was a galaxy s with an HTC body.

Remember that all the leaked Sammy devices are for T-MOBILE.
AT&T is in the process of switching bed partners from Apple to Microsoft. I count us AT&T users lucky that we got an AT&T banded N1 to begin with. Regardless of what the person with incredibly large hands may say about the Dell phones, the N1 is the best Android phone on AT&T and will be for some time until the next Dev phone makes its way (fingers crossed) to AT&T bands.
Until then, enjoy the BEST custom roms ever made right here at XDA. This phone gets better ever month, and next month when the customized gingerbread roms appear, it will be better again.
I totally agree my friend

Not worth it, IMHO. Once you get it, post back and let us know how you like it, and if YOU feel you got your money's worth.
I think its not worth it. Don't get me wrong it's the best phone I have ever had. All the Sidekicks (1,2,3 and lx etc.), from there to g1 (great classic) and a N900 with a few other phones.
I traded my N900 and got an nexus plus $200 bucks. best deal ever !!!!!!!
I would not sale my nexus it's is the best phone out to me. Perfect build, and feel. Googles baby you just can't beat that.
AND THE BEST COMMUNITY FOR ANY PHONE KNOWN TO MAN.
A CLASSIC THAT NEVER DIES ..... CHUCK NORRIS LOL. j/k
But, if your not happy with your choice there always someone with that same burning feeling you had to get one that will pay 500+.

Who else is Returning their Atrix before 30 days are up?

The Atrix is kind of my second Android device. I had a Captivate for a few weeks and wasn't a fan. After following the Atrix (back when it was known as the Olympus), and having own it since the 21st, I think it's time to return it.
I like the phone. I like Android. And while AT&T may not be the fastest in my area, they're pretty good. But having my upload speeds "capped" really irritates me. There's no reason why it shouldn't have HSUPA enabled. And I don't trust AT&T to update it. So, as a consumer, I'm going to vote with my wallet and return my Atrix before I get locked into a contract.
I've been looking really hard to find an N1 for AT&T. The search hasn't gone well. Most people I've contacted on craigslist have a hard time telling me if it's Tmo or AT&T 3G. I figured most people with N1 were geeks and would know that question right off the top of their head. I've found a couple of ebay, and even though I know that phone is awesome, I have a hard time paying $300+ for a year+ old phone.
Anyone that knows someone selling an N1 for AT&T 3G, I'd be willing to pay up to $250 based on condition. I just really, really, really don't want to go back to using my iPhone 3G.
I am still waiting to hear from the repair guys regarding my iPhone 3GS. That's the initial reason I made the jump. But the clock is ticking and my 30 days are almost up. So if I hear from the tomorrow and my phone is reparable, I may take the Atrix back and wait to see what the iPhone 5 is gonna boast and if its nothing but a 4GS type of an upgrade... I'll most likely repurchase the Atrix. I just don't want to be kicking myself IF (the operative word is IF) the iPhone summer update release is comparable or surpasses any other phone on the market.
With all of the mods the developers are creating, I'm hopeful that the speed thing won't be an issue for long. But you are right about AT&T being shady.
Going to return mine if HSUPA / Skype issue is not resolved as both are pretty much a deal breaker for me.

At least you have a 3GS. Do you know how horrible it is go from a fast, 1ghz phone, to a phone that's 400mhz with 128mb ram? Plus it's JB, so it's even slower.
I'm curious about iphone 5 as well, but it's going to take more than hardware to bring me back. I had an iPhone 4, and the antenna sucked. Also, I'm super bored with the OS. If the OS gets a major overhaul and the phone is better, I'll probably get it.
There is also the rumor about the HTC Revolver coming around Q3. Dual core, Android 3.0 (my guess is 2.4).
I'm actually really thinking about switching to VZW for the Tbolt. Except I hate VZW and have had a much more positive experience on AT&T. Except, at the current moment, they're only the 3rd fastest in Phoenix. Tmo and VZW LTE are faster.
Decisions... Decisions...

its not like it samsung or sprint

Isn't the HSUPA+ of the Atrix is not compatible with the AT&T tower yet unless they turn the HSPA+ on?
I'm confused. Motorola is working on Skype compatibility now.
i'd sell you my ATT N1 for 275
Not a chance.
I'm building linux (ubuntu) boxes as often as I can and to have a phone of the same ilk is quite nice. One that is this fast is quite the bonus.
Phone carrying corps won't do anything unless we vote no with our dollars. I know I'm not doing it. Switching to another company still shows you are hooked.
iphones are boring. Edit: Great designs, beautiful methodologies. Still, boring bar the eye candy.
I have 10 more days to decide. I'm really on the fence still. On one hand the hardware is amazing and blazing fast. Friends and family wow at the tegra hd games, hdmi webdock with out using the official moto dock, and the snappiness of the OS is great (granted its rooted, frozen and better optimized than stock form.) Also, the hope that the bootloader will be open in the future and custom roms made for it are a big wait and keep it flag for me. But on the other hand moto has left a bad taste in my mouth with the locked bootloader, and so has at&t with the HSUPA fiasco. But then I have to also hope that a more powerful or as powerful "community friendly phone" will be out soon as well, because anything else up till now doesn't boast this kind of hardware and speed in MY experience..... Decisions.
I already returned mine. Motorola made such an awesome phone and then teamed up with AT&T to completely cripple it! I fully trust AT&T will do everything they can to SCREW Atrix buyers. GET OUT NOW WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Everyone will still buy it. The iPhone 4 was an extremely large jump, this will be a nice step forward.

That's how I feel. I got a few days left and I'm really considering just leaving AT&T all together because there is nothing in their lineup that I can think of that could replace the Atrix. It's sad, the best (Android) phone that AT&T has and I don't want it.
i'm keeping mine granted the locked bootloader up to now sux, but i really do like the phone alot, i find myself on it more than my IP4, when the IP5 comes out that may change tho lol

yes i am goin to return the phone soon i am leaving this group..
I'm planning on keeping mine until Motorola rolls out the Gingerbread update; I figure by that time, if the bootloader hasn't been cracked, and Gingerbread doesn't address all the issues I've got with the phone...I'll unlock it and sell it on eBay and go for something else. I'm trying to be patient, but it does seem like there's been an mass exodus of Atrix owners on XDA. There's really nothing I'd want more than the Atrix on AT&T though.
I just got to this party. Why is everyone leaving? Inspire isnt that much better, if at all. Im giving this atrix a run and it feels snappier than my inspire I just returned and this is basically stock.

considering i've loved the phone with just stock UI and Go Launcher EX, i don't plan on returning it. i have to stay on AT&T, and nothing is really better. the inspire doesn't have an FFC, it's too big for me, and I like using the webtop interface on my TV when I need to.
what i'm really disappointed in is AT&T's rollout; absolutely ****ty network and trying to re-market it as "4G" when it's clearly not even close to max 3G speeds, and their utter lack of marketing for the phone.

Duh, I knew that lol. Too bad they wont sell them outright. Tried to buy a Captivate outright from them for that very reason but the refused.

Where I live, AT&T's the only one with any real presence. Sprint and Verizon (Shockingly) are non existent. T-Mobile has very, VERY little reception.
Having it work at home is extremely important, so for all their faults, where I live, AT&T has been stellar.
Plus, I talk to some folks at a nearby store. Luckily, many of them seem to know what they're talking about. They know the difference between LTE and HSPA+ and all that.

I should clarify. by "****ty network" I meant it's performance vs. expectations. I've had AT&T since forever and on my BB it was never a problem because I didn't do any heavy actions, since the BB OS and browser is way limited. Signal coverage in LA is great for me. however, data speeds usually crawl (1-2 Mbps) and that annoys me as my roommate will easily get 4-5 on his T-mo HSPA+ network.
AT&T shouldn't have jumped the gun by marketing out 4G when it clearly wasn't ready and/or activated in most areas. Nowhere i've gone in southern california (from LA to SD to inland) have I seen anything more than 3 Mbps, which is pitiful unfortunately.
Hell no. I love my Atrix

I love mine too!!!
keeping my Atrix bought from at&t unlocked and using it on rogers in canada dvice and im coming from the nexus one and desire z and a slew of other android devices by far the best ive had and this laptop dock is so damn innovative i cant see my self with another device for a while.... even tho bootloader is locked i think moto really stepped up there game with this phone...
You would think that with this being motos most powerful phone they would want to push out 2.3 as quickly as possible. We have had this phone about a month and I have not heard anything from motorola. I hope they don't abandon the atrix because it wont be anythi.g more than a gimmick with the webtop functionality

This is my first Android device. Came from all of the iPhones. I am very impressed and plan to keep it. 3 weeks in and I am still learning things!

Considering switch to AT&T and the note, opinions?

I have had the Evo 4g since launch, and it has been an amazing phone. I have loved it even more since I rooted it and every new rom I try. But my girlfriend seems to be in love with the note, and I have to admit, that big a$$ screen is kind of nice. I'm just not sure that I would put it to its fullest use for very long, liek using the stylus and stuff. And by the looks fo the forums for the Note, there are only a couple roms for it. Not saying I need to have as many roms available as I have had with my 4g, but it would be a plus.
I guess I am wondering if I should consider the note, or if the galaxy s3 might fit the bill better. Or should I stick with sprint and grab and Evo LTE?
I'm not asking you to make up my mind for me, I need to play with the phones and do that myself. Just wondering if anybody has any opinions or advice?

I've been considering jumping ship to ATT as well lately, never had a problem w/ Sprint's speeds but they've been deteriorating rapidly where I live. If you do decide to move, why not the HTC One X?
I agree

This is a good point. Why not stick with that HTC goodness? lol
Seriously, though, I do admit that the Note is impressive, both in size and performance. While not too much more impressive than the rest of the Galaxy SII series (especially the Skyrocket), the screen size is instantly what gets people's attention. I've tested the Note, and I do like its appearance and style...but damn, that One X is sexy
I don't know, it's up to you on this one. The Note isn't too much more expensive than the One X, and Samsung's UI is easy to get used to. You get a nice phone either way.
HTC EVO 4G LTE pretty much is the one x + the SD card, kick stand and removeable battery haha..the note..ehhh,I'd just get the s3 for sprint...can't mess with unlimited data plans..perfect for root + free wifi tether/hot spot....wireless network speeds don't really effect me,as along as I can make a phone call b do basic browsing...there's usually a wifi connection for downloads n updates nowadays

If u don't care about unlimited data
Note is fantastic, my opinion don't go with X one small storage haha
HTC EVO 4g LTE far better than x one

I wanted something different. Nothign against HTC, I loved my evo. And truth be told I may prefer sense to touchwiz. But we, my girlfriend and I picked up a couple notes. The screen size is amazing, no complaints there. Battery life the past couple days has been in the 10-12 hour range, which seems a little low to me since it was with less then moderate use. But then again I am comparing to my rooted evo running decks reloaded and mason SBC which would last forever, lol.
I was hoping to be more wowed by the note like I was when I got my evo. But I think the jump from a blackberry curve to the evo was a bit more of a wow move then what moving fromt he evo to the note is. The note is a great phone, and my girlfriend loves it. I need to really get my hands dirty with it and see what it can do, but I am keeping my options open.

That's expected; jumping from one OS to the other is way different than just switching phone manufacturers. Android to Android isn't that amazing; Android to iOS (or, preferably the other way around ) is.
Either way, seems you're warming up to your phone nicely. Always good to hear that. If you stick with it, great. If not, I would recommend the One X should this phone disappoint down the road. You have some time to test drive it, so get what you can out of it before making that final decision.

I would make the decision based on; what 3G speeds you get now, if where you live will get Sprint's LTE soon, and if you already have Wimax coverage.
So I guess I'm saying it kind of depends.

I am in columbus OH, I have 4G on both att and sprint and i imagine ATT and sprint will both have LTE here by the end of the year.
I haven't read up much on the HTC One X or the Samsung Galaxy SIII, but one thing iI loved about the evo was how easy it was to root/flash and not brickbrick the thing. Looking at the note forums, I see a lot of posts about bricked phones. Granted I haven't read all the details, but it seems rooting/flashing is less safe on the note, which kind of sucks. Are the One X or SIII any easier to root/flash?
Just realized I was viewing the international note forums. The art note forums seem a little more user friendly

Well, if I knew for sure about LTE coming to my area within a year on Sprint, I would stay with Sprint. Personally I would get a Wimax device OFF contact (Epic Touch is Sprint's best Wimax device), and wait til the end of the year to see if LTE will actually come. Then make my decision. If you are completely done with Sprint though, just jump ship now. No reason to wait.
