GalaxyS Gingerbread update pulled - Fascinate General

http://www.unwiredview.com/2011/04/20/samsung-galaxy-s-gingerbread-update-pulled-by-google/

I just don't get it...the article says Samsung is working hard to get the 2.3 update up and running...why haven't we even gotten 2.2 yet?? Is it Samsung's fault or Verizon or both?

It's both, Samsung is incompetent when it comes to software, and Verizon's priority is loading the phone with money-making preinstall deals. Providing timely updates? Not a concern, they already made the sale and locked us into a two year contract.

VZW is the most expensive choice though.....

Where I live VZW has much better coverage. In the end that is the most important thing. I use very few minutes so roll over is not very important. But when I was on a multi line family plan roll over minutes was a plus to ' bank' minutes for the teens in the family.
But what I didn't like about ATT was it seemed like every time I called them my contract reset back to 2 years.
You pick your poison. . .
As for contracts I think both have pluses and minuses.

For what it's worth going into other carriers' stores and trying out their phones is well worth it. I switched to T-Mobile from Verizon and haven't looked back. Then again, T-Mobile is king where I am day to day. On top of that I wager it's fair to say that if you're looking to get the most out of a phone homebrew wise Verizon is the worst place to look

That's why no contract deals are the way to go. This technology changes too fast to be stuck in a 2 year contract. They need to change those outdated terms.

If you like a carrier get a 2 year to save on a phone, nothing stops you from getting another phone if one comes out, just get that one with no contact.. Contact only means you need to keep a phone on.. You can change phones as you please.

That's true. I guess I worded it that way because I'm in the process of trying out a different carrier. Then again, it seems like they all are changing their policies and terms faster than our contracts can expire.

This is so not surprising

If you can afford to replace $600-$1000 devices that aren't broken that still function the same as a phone, then by all means go ahead. 2 years is more than enough if you pay $200 to get a top of the line device. 2 years is too long if you take the cheap or free device. But that's your own fault.

Don't forget refurbished deals, over 1/2 off sometimes, or the guy who bought his 5 year old son/85 year old dad a phone they can't use and bail on it real cheap a week after release. If you know where to look you don't need to pay 600 for the newest phones.

I think the price is due to the fact that its a horribly made phone. I some how got verizon to take it back even though i was past my 30 days. thank god..set back is that im on a garbage flip untill something worthy comes out. Dont think im gonna go back to android though.
Notice even on ebay people are getting horrible offers for the phone. Samsung has a horrible name in the mobile phone industry....compare it to a moto phone,. Moto phones feel like quality

I've never heard that Samsung had a horrible name in the mobile phone industry. I've heard that they aren't the greatest with providing updates, but the hardware in their phones is almost always the latest and greatest when the phones are released. Given the size and form factor, I can't say that my Fascinate feels flimsy either. If it weighed much more than it does, I'd wonder more about why it was so heavy over enjoying how much more sturdy it felt.
On a more personal note, if all you are going to do is come in here and bash the Fascinate, and not provide anything of any use or substance, I suggest you look elsewhere to read and post, possibly here
The Fascinate is among the best phone, hardware wise. Although, I do agree about the flimsy part. Coming from a Touch Pro, the Fascinate feels flimsy. If you feel that way too, I would recommend the verizon stand case. It adds a nice heft to the phone and feels very solid.
Also, ignore the trolls. I honestly believe that the iPhone is the ONLY way to go for some people.
no i know the hardware is great....if it works properly...ie:gps but cpu and gpu are great.
Yeah i got rid of my fascinate thank god. I came from the iphone on att but left because of the network. And now on verizon i tried android....but there are no quality apps, almost no push notification apps...ie:sports apps

What do you think of the Motorola Triumph?

Virgin has full coverage here in NYC. I don't talk a lot. I use a lot of text/gtalk. They have 25$ plans. The processor/gpu is the same as the thunderbolt. I was going to wait on the nexus 3 but if the Triumph comes out and someone can get CM on it somehow- I might pick it up.
I know the Triumph (Thunderbolt specs) and the Nexus 3 (supposed quad core) are totally different but for 25 a month- that's very attractive.
I know this place will be pro-Vibrant and most likely pro nexus since its a dev device but if the Triumph can get a 2nd init install of Cm or MIUI- why not?
Thoughts?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I am really tempted to pay my etf and make the switch to VM because the service (virgin mobile which uses Sprint's network) is a lot better then T-mobile's in my area. I've heard the Triumph also is running stock android, so thats a plus. I say go for it, $25 a month is a very good deal and VM has a 30 day returm period, so if you don't like it you can return your phone.
How much does that phone go for?

I think Virgin has a 30 day period to return the phone if you don't like it. It would be nice to try it. Worse comes to worse and you don't like it, return it and you're only losing the 25$ for that month.

As much as I don't like verizon's phones. They have the fastest mobile network in the US hands down (LTE and not CDMA). Their devices average 12Mbs, and can hit up to 21Mbs. There's really no contest there. T-mo and the others can't do that today.
First, this is my first post in this sub-forum, as I have a fascinate, but I just wanted to point out 2 things about this phone and Virgin Mobile in general:
1. Sprint has wonderful service in my area, better than AT&T and T-Mobile, but not as good as Verizon. I DO know that I am willing to have one less bar and slower data to save $60 a month. Also, I don't travel where Sprint doesn't have service, so roaming is a non-factor to me, although to some people that should be a pretty big point, as VM doesn't roam out of sprint's network (trade offs... pfft)
2.Virgin Mobile's android phones follow a trend, sell the phone for ~ 50% of retail. I'll prove it:
Optimus S $299 | Optimus V $149 and Samsung Transform (Sprint no longer offers the Intercept) $350 | Samsung Intecept $199 (I see it all the time on sale at BB for $175)
What this leads me to believe is you simply need to find the equivalent phone and simply slash it's price in half, +/- $50. I believe the EVO is the closest match, so take half of that price and you get roughly $225, according to Sprint. Therefore, I believe the triumph will be $250.
What do you all think?
the phone will be sold for $299.99
you can pre-order it now on bestbuy's website.
just go there and search for "motorola triumph"
I'm kinda pissed that the price is so high, but unlimited data, text, and web for 25 a month... will make up the difference in a few months on the money you save from paying your normal phone bill.
If it can't be rootrom'd then im gonna wait for the nexus 3.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I wouldn't, what most people don't know is how these carriers are able to sell the phones for so little money. For example, the rumor touch is 100 bucks for virgin mobile while the off-contract price for the rumor touch on sprint is 250 in most stores, how are they able to do that? the answer is different parts, not just different brands, also lower quality, which is why most people who have a prepaid phone have the most phone problems, there's not a single prepaid phone in the last 3 years that I've seen with no serious problems. While the same can be said for post paid versions in this case it is much worse on prepaid smartphones.
Ask anyone who repairs/mods cellphones, most of the time they won't mess with prepaids :/
The reason those companies sell it higher at full price is to try to get you into their contract.I have never had a problem with a prepaid phone.I personally don't mind getting it cheaper without the contract.I also will dev or work on any phone prepaid or not.I am looking forward to the Triumph, finally there will be a nice spec'd phone on prepaid. While I am happy with th Optimus V I was already looking to use it as a donor for another phone. But with this coming out, I'll just sell my V and get it.Though I'm sure it will have a locked bootloader as long as it can be temp rooted to remove bloatware I'll be very happy.

Early upgrade for high value customers...

Fyi, till December 31, in corporate retail stores sprint has a targeted offer to allow upgrades many months in advance for "high value" customers. Basically I've seen customers with bills averaging over 130 getting upgrades available as early as 9 months before true eligibility. Only way to check is to actually go in to a corporate retail store and have them look at your account. Under offers for your line it will say early hup. Manager has to override price but you could hit the upgrade lottery
This will NOT be reflected online, on the phone, or through any other method than physically setting foot in the retail store. Just FYI. Good luck.
Please don't repost this, it's only for my epic brethren.

I just found out about this and walked out with a new Epic touch for the wife and I.
I called sprint to see if I could get around the $36 activation fee. What we ended up doing was the allowed me to buy out my term for $45 each then he credited me $100 on my account and waived the activation fees!
Sweet!
So I went to post it here and found this thread!
No upgrade for me until a decent LTE phone arrives.
That's my plan too. I'm still enjoying my epic, and I don't see any need to upgrade before then
Is there a way to find out if one of those stores are near me?
Yeah, as much as I like new toys to play with (root, rom etc.) there's nothing available that would even tempt me out of my $200.. now if Sprint gets the Galaxy Nexus in the next couple days.. that might be a different story (my buddy keeps sending me pics and updates about which roms he's flashed etc.. he just got the damn nexus today.. lol)
Our account is just over $130/mo with taxes and such... 2x (SeroP + 4G + $8 TEP). Anyways, my wife has been complaining so much about her Evo, and won't let me root/rom it that I want to get her an iPhone just to shut her up...
I managed to pick up an epic touch for cheap without using my upgrade, but I have to say I would hold onto my upgrade if I didn't have other options. Phones in 2012 will be quad core, amoled hd, and lte. But if you are desperate, it is another option for you.

Should I get Sprint GS3?

Hi,
I was debating whether I should ask this question here or at Spring GS3 forum. I think asking here is more fitting.
I am wondering if I should stay with Sprint or not. I am honestly sick of slow data speed and delayed updates for CDMA phones.
But with wonderful dev magic shown here for our Epic4G, I think there won't be much software issues for GS3.
My alternative is Tmo's prepaid monthly4G for $30 per month. I really like the idea of owning GSM phone and getting unhindered updates from google. But there aren't any nexus phone that is better spec'ed then GS3. Also buying GS3 outright is pretty expensive, +$500.
So, if any of you guys switched to GS3, how are you guys? Any issues or regrets?
How is Sprint's data speed? I just found out from today's news that Sprint's gonna roll out LTE to LA, Boston and NYC area within months.
I just don't want to risk locking in 2 years with Sprint and be miserable...

To directly respond to the OP, regardless of what you decide on phonewise, if it were me, I'd definitely stick with Sprint, particularly if T-mo is the only alternative you're considering. Yeah, Sprint's speeds where NV hasn't hit yet suck, but if they stay on schedule, everything is supposed to be upgraded by the end of next year. And alot more is being done by the end of this year than I'd have imagined when I first heard of it a few months ago.

Well, I am in LA area so I kinda expect LTE to open soon...
But, T-mo prepaid already has HSPA+ working well in my area.
I am guaranteed at least 3mbps with Tmo HSPA+ for sure, and that is all I need.
I like their cheaper plan, but it is bummer to pay lump sum of ~$350 for a year old G-Nex or ~$600 for GS3...
I am hoping for a new nexus device, but no solid rumors about when it will be available... just speculations.
It might come next year, which is too much waiting for me...
If Sprint somehow offers me free GS3 I would stay, but I don't think Sprint can. So I am ready to walk out...
It comes down to if you want the fastest software updates or the best hardware available..
I went gs3 because the hardware is amazing.. and touchwiz really is nice on this thing.. its not like the epic where it just kind of makes things uglier.. it actually adds a lot of usable features on the gs3.. to the point where I would rather run a custom tw than aosp.
P.s. the screens bigger too!

$49.00 Galazy S III Hard to pass up

So Sprint is offering black friday deals on the Galaxy S3 of $49.00 and that is a tough bargain to pass up.
I love my Epic, and I love the hardware keyboard. With that being said I have been eligble for an upgrade for well over a year. I'm thinking get the S3 for $49 trying it out, and if I don't like it sell it on Ebay. Take the money gained and apply it to a Galazy Note 2?
Not sure, but whatever I decide my wife will be keeping my Epic, so I won't be going too far and will keep an eye on this forum.

Where's the info to back up that first line? I have a friend who's on an old Galaxy S and who's looking to upgrade, this would be a sweet deal for him to pick up and get into an S3 for that price. I didn't see anything special on Sprint's website at first glance.
Sam's Club has them for .96 on black Friday!! I'm getting mine there

Of course they are 1 week before I am eligible for a upgrade. Wonder if they would wave that week.

Sprint's corporate stores will wave it for you, of course that depend on the customer service rep

What Frost said, but I might keep it private between The People. It seems most ROMs are debloated without knowing the dependencies of what they remove and people have issues. I always go for stability first so I am not removing anything and will help people learn how to debloat to their liking. With that said, Jellybomb has quick updates, fixes and support as well as tons of themes and options. I highly recommend flashing the removed apps zip as well.
You might as well make it public. It will eventually get out and some **** stain will try to pass it off as their own, so you might as well take your lumps now and deal with all the GS3 noobs.

ROFL would love to see this happen I haven't fired up my popcorn maker in a long time LOL
Damn I don't have a Sam's Club membership, but I don't think I want to go anywhere near a store on Black Friday. I may just get it for the $49 on Sprints site.
Radio Shack is selling it for $99 on an upgrade with a $50 gift card for the play store. That wouldn't be to bad either.. Decisions, decisions.

It still might be cheaper to get a basic membership + $1 S3 then to get it anywhere else you mentioned. Plus the free samplers in the food section alone will make your membership cost effective
Edit: $35 for year membership

Here is a link for proof.

damn, 96 cents at sams club, is there an activation fee? I have to go look this up! (though I really want the note 2)
Can I buy this and sell it to a friend? Does anyone know if turning it on to play with it a bit could harm the legacy plan I am on ... or do I have to call or go online to specifically activate it for that to happen?
