[Q] Xoom or Galaxy Tab 10.1?

Hey All Geeks
So, i decided that it's time to get a tablet, and finally found that Android 3.0 is the long-awaited, dream OS for me. But here is where the problem kicks in (Bad English?). Xoom and GTab2 (Easier name) are bothi running the almighty Honeycomb... so now i'm confused which one to get? i've been thinking for a week now, but my experience isn't as your (Geeker people and Devs ) experience and i thought i would ask you if you don't mind. So, far what i want is: Continuous Development ( because i'm NOT a Dev so i'm putting my faith in you guys and going with the tab you're choosing)

(for Xoom Forum): UNLOCKABLE Bootloader means ONLY for Devs? if so, as a normal human (xD JK JK) will i be able to do custom ROMs?

LOL the Topic i posted at Xoom forum is really ALIVE (better development sign?) BUT the winning device isn't the Xoom xD it's actually the GTab2 lol IF ONLY SAMSUNG included SD Card slot and MicroUSB T_T Or IF MOTO improved the design and provided 1080p recording and playback that would be THE PERFECT Device and they would OWN the market with either devices... but PERFECTION is even BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE

I'm getting a tab. Its beautiful, deving will be there, not like tab 1, and its going to kick ass.

I have to say that now having two of these tablets to choose from I am really torn :-(.
I love Moto specs and Samsung looks.
To be completely honest because of that I am already very disappointed with both.
My major fear is that if I will buy one of them I will have this disturbing and annoying thought at the back of my head that I made a mistake... should have gone for the other one It is not good considering the price of both devices... with this kind of money one should have 150% of satisfaction.
Moto... Samsung.... I HATE YOU BOTH! :-(

Speaking as Nexus One and Nexus S owner, I can say that the power of 'fastboot oem unlock' is a force to be reckoned with...
That said, this is XDA, and you can be sure that both will be hacked and modded. Since they're so similar in terms of specs and quality, I would go with the prettier one, but that's just me. The USB issue isn't that bad, the last I heard about the issue was that it had USB functionality through its dock port--meaning you just need a special cable.

I do not mind USB in the dock. I do not see many thing I would have to connect to tablet directly. HDMI I also do not care about - it is a mobile device for me to watch and surf on the go, not a local NAS player. But lack of SD card support seems like a very big issue and not only to me (everywhere I look ppl are complaining about this).
What I would love is to see an explanation from Samsung why??? What was the logical process behind this decision not to include this port. Hey, SAMSUNG, please tell us why?

Maybe Honeycomb can't handle more then 32GB of storage. And the Tab have 32GB internal memory already.
The XOOM have a sd card slot. Only problem is that is not activated when you buy it. So maybe Android is not compatible whit more memory then 32GB.
I personally have problem to decide witch one to get. Witch one of does have the best screen? And will GT be Xvid certified?

Well, form me this device was about (mainly) about media consumption. I do have Asus 1201N bot it is just tu big... but my Wife's NC10 cant play the movies I do watch.
Tablet that I will buy has to give me access to Hulu (free) as PC does. Has to work on batteries for approx. 8h (that is why I do not have tablet with Windows, as I said I already have netbook) and play divix (all kinds) nicely. Since I do go for holidays (from time to time) and I plan to use built in camera I need storage space
32GB is simply not enough and since Xoom has problem with playing 720p videos (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968308&page=3) I am simply devastated. I did not buy an iPad (because of the issues above), I am waiting for over a year and what... nothing :-(.

I almost jumped on the Xoom train yesterday.... They had a 25% off glitch coupon going and I missed it by like 5 - 10 minutes.

Don't worry... 2nd of March they will get a first reason to lower prices (a bit). I expect Apple to laugh (in a laud matter) at all those things that were supposed to give us an iPad killer and are not with us yet . And if thing will continue to go the way they do with Honeycomb and Xoom (more and more issues + more features "coming soon"). Ppl will refuse to pay $800 for something that is "almost" ready
Do you think (since hardware is the same) GT10.1 will have the same problem with playback of video as Xoom has (everyone is complaining about it!!!)? It would make him bigger than GT1 and worse :-(.
For Tegra 2, 2h of video that works on tegra 2 takes approx. 8GB of storage... this is unacceptable :-(

Seems that issue is with 720p as well :-(

Concerning video playback I think Samsung does a better job. Like on the galaxy s, where they play a lot of video files with no additional software, meaning they included the necessary codecs.

Is the lack of SD card slot a sure thing? I suppose in the videos there is no visible slot along the sides...in my daydreams you can screw the samsung logo off the back and reveal the hidden sd slot! A guy can dream?
Daydream update: Since the logo is big, when you screw it off, there's actually 2 sd card slots. Yeah! Not deluding myself at all.

First I fell in love with Xoom and than I saw Galaxy Tab 10.1 OMG i looks awesome...
But now reality strikes... no sd card slot... and since you can not play (straight away) stuff you can download... GOD! I was so hoping to swap my netbook fro tablet :-(
This is especially painful as in all ads and information that is exactly what you are being offered. Not a word that video support is limited compared to what last years netbooks and older tablets (Archos 101, Galaxy Tab) can do :-(
At the moment (if above will get confirmed, and it will :-( ) I am thinking again about tablet with windows on-board (although I really hate this idea as I do not need BIG system in a device like this) or hoping for 10" Playbook.
Both Xoom and GT10.1 so close to perfection... ehh :-(

Tegra 2 can not play high profile mkv videos and this is one of the most popular formats to download HD stuff...
Go to rslinks.org or other sites and see what you can get... without spenidng extra time for re-encoding it will not play :-(
I got over 500GB stuff on my NAS drive - no way I will waist time to change format of that all just so I will be able to spend 700 euro
Idea for me was that it will be able to replace my netbook and will give me longer bat. life. Well it can not :-( And it is twice as expensive. Because iPad do/did only part of what I require I haven't bought it.. same here. You can (well.. you will be able to) watch flash but videos only in specific format. Who has time for that?
One would think that what we are talking about is pretty basic stuff and I thought that was the main idea behind tablets:
- web browsing on the go like at home
- full multimedia support
- long battery life
- limited weight

You forget one point: acceptable price point ( i think the honeycomb tablets are a little to expensvie)
And one negative point for windows tablets: often they have a fan

I dont mind the price... it is the same as the iPad. I understand that for a gadget like that you pay Premium - OK. (of course if it would be free I wouldn't complain! .
I do know about fan in the Windows tablets... I got Asus 1201N that gets really hot sometimes... tablet with fan is out of the questions (imagine to shake a hand with someone after watching a movie!)
Another thing is that "BIG" stuff i do on desktop any way so I do not need full windows (heavy system) on a tablet.... I do not need photoshop or dwg editor. But I want web pages to look like they are supposed, I want to read without magnify glass, I want to watch a movie (without thinking before if it will work), listen to music, look at the pictures, etc... Just normal things Maybe play a game once in a while...

I was also considering one of these two tablets, but then i found the Acer Iconia A500. It has the same specs as Xoom and Galaxy 10.1, but WITH MicroUSB, SD Slot and HDMI. And, from what I can see, around half the price!!
Well, if all this is true, I know what I'm getting!!!

If this thing does not have USB port, how can we sync or copy files to the internal memory?

It will have USB connectivity through the propriety port, and I would be surprised if there won't be a dock that offers hdmi connectivity also.
We also have to wait and see if samsung will offer an accessory like the iPad and xoom (or soon to be introduced) that can be plugged into the propriety port allowing sd cards to be connected or even an external USB drive. I really hope so. That would be ideal.
The tab 10.1 doesn't have all the ports we want built into the unit, but there is a benefit of that......the weight and size is notably reduced, far lighter than any of the upcoming tablets.
The weight is a big thing for me as I currently carry my iPad around in a small bag and any weight loss would be welcome

Time to move on. Selling my TF-101.

I've had my 32gb tf 101 for roughly a month after being one of the lucky ones to find the tablet in stores. Mine has no defects except the inevitable minor light bleed.
After trying to incorporate the tablet in my life it has become clear that tablets aren't for me. I always end up reaching for my phone. I've taken the tablet with me on my travels, on the plane with movies and music and all that great stuff. But I end up using my phone 90% of the time, my laptop for another 9% and the tablet for the final 1%. At home my tablet is very rarely used as well. It truly is a unique experience and 3.1 makes it far better. For the time that I've used it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The display is beautiful.
I'm sure for some people it makes a lot of sense. But sadly it isn't for me. If anyone in the GTA, ON Canada wants it, feel free to shoot me a pm.

Many people are making an assumption that a tablet will replace a laptop or a desktop and will become a productivity device. When people mocked original iPad and called it an oversized Touch they actually weren't that far off; a tablet is purely a consumption and entertainment device. It's understandable that $500 is hard to justify for something like this considering your phone can perform at least 90% of the tasks your tablet can, albeit on a smaller scale. Hopefully OEM's will flood the market with decent Android tablets and drive the prices down to a more bearable ~$200 range.

Personally I find myself reaching for the tablet first and settling for my phone if I absolutly must. Most of the time my phone is set to bluetooth tether. To be honest I'd probably be better off with a 3g call-capable tablet and a pen-sized bluetooth headset. I almost never carry my laptop any more. But I rarely need to work on the go (other than answering emails)

THe only reason I reach for my laptop is Netflix. Otherwise, I spend most of my time on the tablet at home

I have a 360, a Boxee Box, and a Blu-ray player attached to my TV. All 3 have some overlapping features, but each one does something the other two can't do, and I enjoy having the different options. If one of them died, I could limp along with the other two, but I'd rather not. Point is, tablet and phone features will always overlap, you just have to figure out which task each one is better at and use it accordingly, then you'll find the tablet has a valuable place in your tech collection. I could live without the TF, but I'd rather not

I use it to read pdfs. most my books and journal articles are available in pdf format. The TF is by far the best pdf reader. I agree, you don't ready need it if you have good laptop. It's a luxury toy not pc replacement.

What (s)he said! I have 2 PS3s at home just because I didn't want to spend money on a bluray player only. A tablet is luxury for most of us... there are very few instances where a tablet would be beneficial (e.g. inventorying, showing clients photos or videos etc.). I personally love my tablet and have not used my PC as much. And with a baby around it's great to have a neat little gadget that's portable and has nice multimedia features.

He I don't really fault people for buying a tablet and then realizing it has no place in their life. I bought a used 7" Galaxy Tab for the gf a couple of weeks ago to replace her eReader. She thinks its neat, but she hasn't used it for anything but reading and to her, it seems like a waste. So I'll probably sell it and get her the new Nook reader. Tablets just aren't for everyone.

have you ever tried one of the thumb keyboards available on the market place? They make using a tablet sloop much easier and more practical

I'm pretty new to the whole tablet world, started with the NookColor and moved onto the Transformer. I've got to say it's mostly a consumption device but it's a fantastic consumption device at that. I love the internet on the 10" screen, love the entirely useable e-mail client included, love the quality of the games available and look forward to the continued evolution of the platform in general.
I loaded up the Autodesk sketch program and found myself cheerfully painting like a kid for the first time in decades - It's not that I can't do anything in particular on a tablet vs. another device, just that the tablet seems like a good fit for many more things. A magazine looks like a magazine, the internet looks like it does on my real computer and the remote access means I've got my fully useable desktop with me anywhere there's a wifi connection.
I think the only real downside it the portability. I grew up in an era where professionals carried around day planners so this is no big stretch for me but it is unusual given today's norms. Too big to fit in a pocket and too small to justify a computer bag.
All in all though if a phone and laptop do what you need that should be all you need. I'm not happy reading stuff on my laptop and personally prefer the touch interface when on the go so tablets fit my bill - for now.

use it as an in dash display in your car. That way it is always with you in a practical manner.
Then when you need to take it out of your car you can carry it into the library/coffee shop or whatever.

This was my plan all along (still the primary reason), but then when I got my TF, I found so many other uses. Yes I have a MT4G and a laptop, but the TF makes viewing things so much easier. I have just loaded up Supernatural seasons 5 and 6, so I can get caught up anywhere I want to. I love it!

I can't agree that the TF is not a productivity tool, it is my tool of choice for email and browsing at home and Google docs app is the business. I do have the dock though which turns it into a netbook but with better battery life and screen.

So far loving it.
First to android and tablets and ive turned on my computer twice in 3 weeks...
and both times was so that i could remote into and control my music downloads as i watched tv, surfed the net, and responded to work emails.
even last night, i downloaded a "read to me" story of the 3 little pigs and watched it with my daughter before she went to bed...
then i get to surf the net in bed again.. catch up with xda, news, sports, etc..
its a convenience..
this past weekend i took it on a road trip.. my daughter played games, i used it to book a room while using the hotel's wifi, snapped a few pics in the car, and even got it to tether off an older palm treo phone...(so i had internet in the car!)

i should be receiving mines any minute now...
already owning the g2x and a laptop the sole reason for me getting the transformer is to read pdf files. Being a college student textbooks become really expensive. Now days you can get a copy of the text in pdf for a fraction of the cost or if you just search the net you can find it for free. For me reading pdf files off a laptop is really inconvenient and the battery life is nothing compared to a tablet. Therefore it made sense for me to invest in a tablet and load all my pdf text onto the tablet. I save money in the end and I don't have to lug around a bunch of heavy ass textbooks everyday. So it's a win-win situation for me.

Won't happen unless subsidized, most phones are $450.
For me I've noticed that since getting this the battery on my evo lasts 3x as long. Surfing on this is much more pleasant.

As a university student, the tablet is an awesome device once you put the proper apps in it.
-a proper file manager (I've still yet to find one with drag&drop and proper shortcuts like windows explorer)
-a proper 'windows-office' like program and one that opens pdfs
-a proper video player (moboplayer)
-a proper calendar and agenda device
-a proper ebook reader (ie moonreader)
etc
The advantage of android apps is that they open much faster than if you were to run windows versions of the programs. With files are easily transferred over ftp, it is very time-efficient.
I'd say this device can easily take the place of my current netbook (and it has). The long lasting battery life and the tiny form factor (along with its lightweightness) really sold it for me

Try repligo readerd for a good pdf reader, you can even add notes, drraw lines and rectangles, write free hand on the pdf ...

still not sure if i want it - why did you buy?

i am still not sure i want to by the Acer,,, or the Asus..
be honest with me.. why did YOU buy the Acer.
it doesnt have to be Asus vs Acer. it can just be why you got the Acer.
was it the usb port?, the expandable memory? price? (target has them for $399 so i am really tempted.)
so what pushed you over the edge to buy the Iconia ?
i also am still not sure if it cna see dSLR cameras on the USB port to read the images off the cameras memory card so if someone says it works for their dSLR then thats a huge game changer for me.
i own an ipad and its really really a tough choice given the app and game availability on the ipad, but i am an android phone user so i am very familiar with Android.

To be honest, it was down to the Acer or the ASUS for me although I did like the fact the hardware was working at launch (SD slot, USB etc).
While everyone seems to be complaining on the Acer ROM update schedule, or lack thereof, I am happily running a custom ROM (of which there are several now) which is now at 3.2
What drove me to the Acer was it was available when I decided to buy. Otherwise, it would have been a hard choice. But, I think after actually looking and holding the ASUS I would have picked the Acer.
I use it primarily for business (sales) showing customers products by using well bookmarked PDF files, email (I moved my domain over to Google Apps for business and quick lookups while I am on the road (WiFi tether to my HTC phone) so I don't need a seperate data plan.
No complaints.

do either of you own or owned an ipad to give me your thought comparisons outside of the obvious massive App lead that the ipad has?

I got it for free... kinda... I traded some work for it.
I needed an upgrade from the Archos 101 which was only about three weeks old at the time I saw the upcoming Acer. Preordered it from BB.
I still would have gotten the Acer if Asus TF was available. I need the USB. Period. And I don't care about the TF dock feature.

Well I just plugged my Canon Power Shot A1100 IS in and the Aconia recognized it right away and the pictures showed up right away.
I haven't tried my Nikon or Canon DSLR yet but no reason why they shouldn't work as well on jpg files.
I bought it because of the USB slot, expandable memory, HDMI and the price.

Bought mine for simple reasons
I did the stupid thing and did not bother to do any homework before going out and buying my first tablet (apple I pad 2) - returned to the store the next day. Had no idea it had no native flash support (the "solution" was to use Skyfire for crummy flash support).
Went home, did my homework - when it came down to simple price/vs features the Acer Iconia seemed like the best choice - microSd, full size USB port (awesome for me - it works with a USB hub also, I have lots of USB devices).
Not sure we can claim apple has much if any "app lead" over android tablets - and once you consider how many apps are written for the Android phone but run great under Honeycomb as well. Don't feel much of an app shortage here, the Droid market is freaking huge.
All in all, very happy with my purchase.

I bought mine largely due to the full-sized USB port as I'm an avid retrogamer, so getting to play emulators with the actual controllers (I have USB adapters for them) on my tablet was pretty much a childhood fantasy come true ^_^.
Anyway, that and I really love the metal casing... it just feels solid and sturdy, not large or bulky at all even though it's the heaviest tab of the bunch. I'm sure in some instances, like holding it up over your head in bed or something, you'd notice the weight, but really, there are no heavy or bulky tablets in this category at all, only those that are impressively small like the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
I will note that Acer is so far the worst at getting updates out, but the community here seems pretty devoted, not to mention there's a ton of cross-developer action as the Tegra 2that all of these share means much of the software can just be transplanted from one brand to another. So, if you're going to root and run roms, software becomes a bit less of a concern. As far as the hardware goes, I love it myself.

It was a choice between the Acer and Asus for me. I got the Acer because I was impatient, but I ended up not returning it because after using it I couldn't see myself getting by with no usb and no flash. I considered the new Galaxy Tab as well but for the same reason I decided not to wait.
If I DID end up waiting, I'm sure I'd have decided to wait for a Kal-El based tablet. At some point in the 'waiting for better to come' game, you have to take a step or you'll never buy a product. I use the tablet daily, even my wife uses it now and so it's proven it's value to me.
I use the flash for extremely stupid things, but tbh to each his own, right? One of these things is to sneak into bed at night. By the time I go to bed sometimes my wife is already sleeping and she's a very light sleeper. Flicking a light on to see where I'm going would surely wake her up and it's sometimes difficult to navigate around the bed (without smacking off a big or little toe). I thought, "can I live without the flash? Sure!" But it would be an inconvenience, especially if I do ever find myself in a slightly more important scenario where I need it and don't have (for taking a pic in low light, for eg).
The USB is a must as I travel a lot and the big reason for getting the tablet beyond using it in my home is so I can travel light (without having to use my laptop). With the usb I can plug flash drives or hard drives in and watch my tv series and movies or use it to juice my phone if I strain it chatting too long or whatever.
Other than that, I didn't like the feel of the Transformer and I didn't want to depend on getting/using the keyboard part to have usb functionality. I had been keeping up with all the pics of the light bleed and saw it first hand. Who wants to worry about getting a tablet with light bleed at a time when they weren't in very many stores? That would have meant back and forth shipping. Not my thing.
The Acer is fully usable as-is, with the Asus and Samsung you MUST buy accessories for them to get a usb port.
I also considered resale value, like any tech head . If I am to resell my Acer A500 right now, I'm going to get ~$400 for it (not everyone knows about the sale price of 350 at certain stores). In a few months, I will lose another $50 to depreciation...as by then I'm sure the price will further fall to something more attractive to fringe and impulse buyers.
The Samsung with added accessories to make it function similarly to the Acer is already in the $550 region, but it will depreciate exactly the same as the Acer, unfortunately. Same with the Asus.
So after you buy the accessories to get USB (if you need it), you still end up selling the other tabs (with accessories) for approximately the same price as the Acer, as resale value for accessories is little to nothing and you can very rarely if at all sell them on their own. (This is based on the many, many times I've seen people reselling their tablets with accessories like docks and cases for way, way less than what they got it for).
In essence, you lose more money with the other tablets IF you need* to accessorize them. *(to play catch up to the A500, like buy the keyboard section for Asus or buy the proprietary addon for the Samsung to get USB)

I replied before reading the whole thread and missed the inquiries into the Apple side of things <insert evil grin>... imma hate me some on Apple, hoo wee. Android is slowly doing to Apple in the mobile market what Microsoft did to Apple in the computer market. What's amazing is that everyone always said Microsoft beat Apple because of developer support, because Windows had all the software, all the games. Now, we've seen the exact opposite, Apple with all of the software goodies and their competitor standing out alone on their OS alone... but what happened this time? Android is proving once and for all that Apple's walled-garden approach, their almost communistic approach to electronics just isn't going to appeal to the masses once they are exposed to the idea of choice, something Android offers in spades. We all want to do whatever we want with our devices... they are OUR devices after all, not Apple's or Samsung's or HTC's or Google's. Apple has made it clear that they intend to impose strict control over their hardware and software, whereas Google has opened the door wide and invited everyone in with a gentle wave. I, for one, after having had (and at the time loved) an iPhone for 2 years, will NEVER buy a single Apple product again.

I did the stupid thing and did not bother to do any homework before going out and buying my first tablet (apple I pad 2) - returned to the store the next day. Had no idea it had no native flash support (the "solution" was to use Skyfire for crummy flash support).
Went home, did my homework - when it came down to simple price/vs features the Acer Iconia seemed like the best choice - microSd, full size USB port (awesome for me - it works with a USB hub also, I have lots of USB devices).
Not sure we can claim apple has much if any "app lead" over android tablets - and once you consider how many apps are written for the Android phone but run great under Honeycomb as well. Don't feel much of an app shortage here, the Droid market is freaking huge.
All in all, very happy with my purchase.

I'm not a huge Apple fan at all but in their defense they do have a huge "app lead" and it's not necessarily the number or amt. (though it certainly does have that as well) it's the popularity of the device. The iPad has had hulu and netflix forever and Android is just getting it now. It's not a huge deal but the fact is, apps will almost always hit IOS first, and that IS saying something.
I agree with you though, I don't feel a shortage. I have every app I need (and many I don't, lol) so I'm not worried. With Hulu and Netflix now on 2.2/2.3 and heading soon to 3.1 I can safely say I'm completely happy with my purchase as well.

I don't, my daughter and son-in-law do (Ipad 1 & 2). I had enough time to use theirs but to each his own they say.
I like being able to read/write office files (Polaris) and maybe you can do that in the App Store?? I also don't like needing to use iTunes for everything (and maybe you don't?).
Like I said, no regrets on my part.

If I was going to be torn between devices it wouldn't be between the Acer and the Asus it would be between the Acer and the Toshiba Thrive.
I have the ipad2 32gb 3g Verizon. Stood in line on March 11. It's nice I play w/ it occasionally. I really like my Acer a500 though. It does more than the ipad can. Imo the Acer is a better machine.
I have the Nikon d3100 dslr. Both tablets will display the jpegs. I pop out the SD card and use a card reader, in the Acer, or the adapter, in the Apple, to access the pictures.
Also, starting tomorrow, the Acer is $350 at Target ($399-50gc).

Like most people, full size USB. All Android tablets are pretty much the same... this had full size USB so easy choice.
However, if I had to make a choice now, it'd be a bit harder cos the Tosh Thrive has it as well but that looks massive! But you can get it in pretty colours.. oooh!
edit: Oh, I also see it has a full size hdmi! I've already broken 2 micro-hdmi cables on the Acer cos all u need to do is put a tiny bit of pressure on the cable and the end snaps off!

For me it was all about the SD expandability, if I had known about the Toshiba Thrive, I probabbaly would have waited. It's not all about micro-weight and thickness with me. Acer tab has micro SD up to 32 G, Toshiba has full SD up to 128 G I believe.

has anyone compare this acer iconia a500 to the viewsonic gtab, which have similar hardware. only difference is the older android 2.2. it has usb and hdmi and etc... i am debating between the two. also gtab aonly cost 260 buck at amazon

As far as the gTablet goes, the software isn't a concern since roms for all of these Tegra 2 devices are becoming plentiful and easy to install, so finding 3.0 or 3.1 on the gTablet is likely a piece of cake. Now, as far as the SCREEN goes ...
The aspect ratio on the gTablet is just off... everything is squished just a little, so round things are slightly ovular, squares are slightly rectangular... I got a Pocket eDGe off of woot a while back and it was the exact same way. The screen on the gTablet is also off-center with that thick-ass bezel along the bottom. Personally, I originally wanted a gTablet until I saw that screen, but if you can live with it and wanna run a custom rom, it's the cheapest way to get a Tegra 2 tablet, and it even has a full-size USB port on there, which was one of the reasons I'd originally considered it. As for how it feels in the hand, I played with one and it feels like a cheap Xoom... similar thickness and feel to the edges, but obviously a lower (though acceptable) build quality. I still think the way my Acer feels in my hands is the best of all those I've tried, including the Xoom and Galaxy Tab 10.1 (oh but the GTab 10 is f-ing sexy... my bf has that one). If you can afford the Acer, I'd still say go for that one, but if money is your primary concern and you're not bothered by the screen, go for it. Just remember, the screen's resolution is slightly lower (1024x600 vs 1280x800 on the rest), and there's only 512MB RAM in there vs the 1GB the others have... also only a front facing cam, none on the back, but I never take pics with my tablet anyway... that's what my phone is for. Otherwise, it's Tegra 2 all the way... it's definitely worth what they're going for these days, but so is the Acer even though it costs more.

I'm right there with you. I'm still within my return window, so I'm seriously considering returning the a500 and getting the thrive when it comes in august. I've always been a toshiba fan.
My only concern is will the toshiba be locked down and unrootable.

Mainly because of Android (aka not an oversize iPod) and the USB slot.
Would have gone for another if it was thinner. Now with the acer case on it's darn fat and heavy. If you don't really care about the USB go for samsung 8.9. I'm still torn between the two.

[Honest Answers] should i buy a tablet?

hi. i finished school with good grades so my dad told me he will buy me what i want (but not ANYTHING like 1000$ or something)
anyway, i told him i wanted a galaxy tab 10.1
i waited until it arrived then i was going to go and buy it then my bro told me "Do you really need it?"
so i head to the store and before buying it i remembered what he said and i headed home without buying it.
it have been days and i am over my head thinking and especially that i can buy anything else" i need" (but idk what i really need) and that my dad offered me to deposit in my bank account the same price of the tab in case i did not buy it.
here is why i want it: games, web browing , chatting.
do i really need it ?

If you don't have smartphone it will be a whole new world for you and you will love it. Now if you are a techie with a lot of gadgets its simply going to be an accessory, a very convenient one still. then comes all the in depth customizing. It could most likely eliminate the use of others if you can find its use. At the same price you can get a good laptop or even a better super phone. Its all up to your standards of living, if you can use such a product productivly and willing to put the time into getting to understand the product, standard ergonomics.

i had samsung 7, and now 10.1. For myself i would buy it again. But it wont answer your question.
Read following feature list. If you will use following features regularry, its for you.
- reader : comfortable way to read books ( write anot.) you can keep thpusands of books with variouse format
- light weight : important, if you travel often
-good access to internet, mail, exchange
- remote access over vpn to remote desktop etc
For me, it is useless to have netbook. I have also laptop, but heavy i7 proc, 16Gssd. Its hardly portable, but i run on it network simulation.
Personaly if i would be fresh graduate, i would wait. This market is really new.

I love my Tab but if you don't have a computer or a laptop I would get as lightweight of a laptop that you can afford. A 14 inch screen around one inch thick would be a great portable sized one, I have an HP that size and it is great.
But if you do have a computer/laptop already then the Tab would an awesome addition, but it is really a toy IMO.

I love my Tab. I never bought into the smartphone craze, mostly due to the price of data plans, the Tab allows me into the world of smartphones, just on wifi instead. Between Netflix,games, browsing on the net, reading Game of Thrones on the kindle app, RSS readers I have not used my computer nor my PlayStation all summer long. With all the customization I am very happy with my decision, save for no love from an actual Netflix app or HBO GO.

I say yes and here is way. Tablets are changing the consumption of media, and they do everything from web browsing, email, IM chat, video calls, movies, tv shows, games, media storage, news, books, and on and on. My gtab is playing second fiddle to my iPad right now but it is a really nice convenient way to be connected.

You say you don't really know what you need...so it sounds like there's really nothing you need. I suggest you do buy it! It's pretty sweet! You could use it for many things on a daily basis. You said you finished school, I don't know if you're going back or not, but you can also use it to take notes in class instead of wasting paper.
If you buy it you have 14 days to return it without a problem. If you buy it at a Best Buy they won't even charge you for a restocking fee so give it a try!

I was always an apple person and was super excited about the ipad until I discovered it was basically a big phone. So I waited for something more approaching a computer to come along and finally decided on the tab.

2. Fast for email and web browsing.
3. Emulators - plays snes and genesis games... what more do you want.
4. Touchscreen - with keyboards designed for honeycomb e.g. thumbkeyboard it is surprisingly easy to type. Browsing etc feels great.
5. Always on and ready to go (though mac laptops / chrome are simillar)
Cons
1.for writing it is still not quite able to give a good experience (though that should be obvious) it struggles with large documents and Google docs is badly implemented. For instance I was reading a manuscript on here marking places that needed editting using polaris office (included free). It worked nice as a reader but did not inform me that it failed to save the last 20 of my 60+ bookmarks.
2. More bugs and lag than on a fully fledged computer, but not too bad.
3. Not post-pc enough to justify purchase over desktop or laptop depending on what you already have - in terms of what you can do, the tablet is no replacement for either. But if you have them already you will find you use them far less.

My suggestion (as a GTab 10.1 Owner) is... don't buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1
Get a Nook Color... root it, overclock it... etc... you'll learn much more this way and you'll save several hundred dollars
... or get the original galaxy tab 7, which you can find for less than 200 dollars on craigslist.
and maybe get an ipod touch with your extra cash and have the best of both worlds. I dunno, up to you.
Either way, at this point 500 is too much to pay.
I'm disappointed there is no official netflix app, no official google voice support... lack of quality tablet apps, and I'm worried about Samsung supporting the device once the next version comes out.

Consumption v. Production
Nice contrast between pros and cons. About the question, really depends on what you plan on using it for. I think the tab is more often used for information consumption versus production. I use it for work as a sales rep to view email and work files quickly and easily. I tether it through my HTC Inspire and almost always have it connected. Again, more for information consumption versus production. However, I know there is a docking keyboard I may get down the road, and not carry my laptop anymore! And, its cool to pull up videos/pics/industry news on the spot to show clients without the hassle of booting up a laptop...

No. You NEED a computer if youre attending another type of schooling. I'd get a tablet later because having a computer has more uses especially for school, where a tab(especially a HoneyComb one) is for play and mobility(or as I call lazyness).
When I had my iPad, I used it for internet because I was lazy to get my laptop out. Went back and returned it (I'm 16, so I have to be allowed to return regardless, within the return period, this case being 3 months ), thought I wanted an iPad 2, bought a laptop, and don't regret it.
Laptops last much longer if you buy the ones $600-$900(they are mainly above average these days).
In short, GET A LAPTOP, THEN A TAP YOU REALLY WANT LATER, like a quad core one hahah.

I have all 3. This is order of how much I use each device.
Laptop > Netbook > Tab 10.1
Laptop is still the best for overall productivity.
I like my tablet, but there is no way it could be my only device.

For games, get an iPad.
Big MMORPGS, got a Laptop.
Web browsing, a 15-17 inch laptop.
If you want it to be portable, iPad/XOOM, Tab 10.1 is too thin and easy to snap, also doesn't take a memory card, XOOM does.
Chatting, all will work.
If you don't have a dual core phone, get a laptop, but get a good one, my Toshiba Satallite for $600, dual core at 2.3 ghz I believe, 4 Gb of ram, 640(really 500)gb hard drive, etc. I don't regret picking my laptop over the iPad 2. Yes, I've had iphone 3g since launch, the 3gs, then 4 until February, had android since(like 5 android phones, all getting better).
I have a strong feeling you will be happy with a computer over a tablet. If not, you got 15-30 days to return But you will want a tablet. go play with a tab at bestbuy, not a game, just see what it can do, the speeds it does. My dads employee lent him a 10.1, I played with it for about 10 minutes, then got bored. Go try it out, tabs are limited, not computers.
If none of that made sense, I explained why to get a laptop.
To answer your Original Post(no, I'm not lazy, I wont us OP), GET A LAPTOP FIRST, THEN A TABLET LATER.
But seriously, he might be right. Do you really want a tab? Go play with one first then tell me what you think.

This is the best advice in your case. Unless you already have a nice laptop, get yourself a MacBook Pro, because you'll need it for any school related and/or creative projects you will embark on in the future. Throw Parallels, then Windows, and any games you can think of on it, and you'll be set for a while. MBP may be approaching your dads budget, and I feel for him, but a 13" at Macmall/Microcenter with $50 8GB ram upgrade from NewEgg is the route I'd want my smart, savvy son to take.
If your laptop shreds already, tell dad to find you a $99 HP Touchpad, and spend the rest on an educational father/son trip to Vegas. ;D

WTF? That's a reason for NOT buying a Tab? Because it'll be more likely to break by putting massive force on either side?
I'd also like to see a survey of how many Xoom or Transformer or Iconia users actually, you know, swap SD cards on a regular basis.

and an HTC evo...
I use my laptop quite a bit 4-10 hrs a day
phone about 2-5hrs a day
tab 10.1 >2 hrs a day
so in the end was it worth the 499.99 no, am i glad i bought it yes.
im the kind of person who always has to get something when i see it that looks cool...
I do love how fast and easy it is to surf web and stream music. once i get the logitech Zagg bt keyboard case will i use it for school, yes. I would much rather carry that around than a 17" laptop...
The tab is very convenient when in bed and doing some last minute XDA reading (lol i love this site) or when playing a game on my laptop, to be able to look up something w/o having to ALT+TAB is wonderful... idk about some people but i think its pretty snappy when it comes to browsing the web (w/ dolphin browser)...
start with a laptop or a MBP (they are nice but im still a M$ person) if you go with a Windows machine check out HP's website they always have great GREAT deals on high performance laptops (HP makes very nice laptops and you would be wrong to think any less IMO)
(tons of free upgrades and i think they still have the deal going on where you buy a laptop and get a free 4Gb Xbox)
I love my Tab... only downfall for me is the homescreen/launcher (TW) is pretty laggy... esp when moving apps or creating shortcuts

Here's what I'll tell you,
Tablets are a great internet viewing device and fun to pay games on, but they are more of a filler between a phone and a laptop. If you do not have a laptop or your own computer I would suggest the computer.
At this point in time, if I were you, I would get an HP TouchPad for $99 (if you can find one) and play around with it. If you like it then good, if you don't you can sell it on ebay for most likely more than you paid or keep it because it is only $99. Then you have the rest of your money to get a laptop or Galaxy Tab if you find the need for them.

Should I trade my iPad?

First off, I have an android phone, motorola atria.
I have a 32gb wifi iPad, and a chance to trade it for either an acer a500 or samsung galaxy tab 10.1 4g. It would be a straight trade. Would you do it?
I like the apps for the iPad, and there are great games for it. This is my only major road block right now. Hardware wise, I would trade for either one easily, but it's the software side that's keeping me from the simple trade.
Are there apps for android that are specifically made for tablets like iOS and their "hd" version of apps?
It seems the quality of apps and especially games are better right now for iPad?
Ps. In general I do prefer android, I would never trade my atrix for an iPhone. I'm speaking just tablet wise right now.

Go to bestbuy and try the tablets out. The ipad is an awesome tool but it's not for everyone, just like the android tablets. Ultimately you will have to decide what you like best. They are different and you should never buy an ipad and expect it to be an android tab and vice versa. They approach the same problem in very different ways and you should decide which way you like best.
Most apps scale very well with the tablet. I have had it for a couple months now and have not seen an app yet that doesnt properly work with the tab.
As far as gaming goes, most games you could find for ipad you would also find for android. There are some threads about games in the "themes and apps" section of the tab forums that you could check out and youtube to see what they are like.
One thing that I really like about the tab, as far as games go, that i'm not sure the ipad can do is connect to your playstation controller, or a plethora of other gamepads that are out on the market. I hooked my tab up to my 55" tv the other day with hdmi and played shadowgun with my ps3 controller on the big screen.

Both are awesome and it boils down to what you want / like..
I sold my iPad2 for the Tab 10.1 and am very happy that I did...
Things to consider:
4:3 or 16:9 screen
Mono or stereo sound
Simplicity or customization
App Store or Market
There are more but I think you get it...

You came to the Gt10.1 forum on XDA to ask us to compare the ipad to our tablet? For your sake I'll assume you're not trolling or trying to start an android vs ipad fight, but really, you're not asking unbiased people here. Did you really think anyone here would tell you to get an ipad? I'd say try them both out and make your own decisions (and for gods sake please don't post your preference here).

I bought the iPad2 and while it was the most liberating experience I've had in mobile computing, ever, it was within a week that the limitations and annoyances of iOS and Apple's whole mindset drive me crazy. I no longer needed to carry a big 17" or 15" laptop, but I wasn't allowed a even a basic file system, and anything I transferred had to be done through the most buggy app ever - iTunes. Yes, you could use DropBox, but only for apps that supported Dropbox. And everyday, as I tried to work on it, it drove me crazy and infuriated me that the device was so close yet failed so hard.
I had the 16G Wifi. I decided that I would sell the iPad2 and buy a used 16G Wifi GalTab 10.1 - an even trade was perfectly acceptable. I ended up selling the iPad2 for $400 and bought a two week old 10.1 for $300.
I only have two annoyances, and unfortunately, both of those can only be solved by rooting (which is only a problem if a person doesnt WANT to root) and that is that Styluses dont work properly on 10.1 w/o specific tuning (through root), and the NavBar at the bottom drives me bananas - again, removed through root.
BUT, beside those two things, the 10.1 is everything I loved about the iPad with 20,000 less annoyances. Perfect? No. But unless you are completely engrained in the Apple/Mac/iOS culture and you love that sort of enforced limitation, then the GalTabs can do FAR MORE than the iPads, just as well, and for less money.
As for apps, almost all the big games for iOS are now being made for Android, so the divide doesn't really exist there anymore. There may be a couple - maybe the ones YOU want - but for the most part, Android has most of them. The only difference are some industry specific apps. I went with iPad in the first place as I work in film, and the devs for film apps only dev for iOS. (screenwriting, slate (clapboard), storyboarding, etc) Film is mostly populated by people that think Apple/Macs are the only devices that can so anything. There are seriously TONS out there that are completely unaware that you can edit or mix sound on PC. Seriously - they think Final Cut Pro is the only program that can do it. That will change as Android grows.
One thing I liked more about the iPad that I thought that I would like more about the 10.1 - the screen ratio. I dont use the device for video playback as much as I thought I would, so the 4:3 ratio of the iPad is actually better to get work done and to read - the 16:9, while better for movie playback is awkward for web browsing, doc editing/creation, and reading.
I am 1000% thrilled I switched from iPad2 to 10.1, and the Samsung is every bit as physically beautiful as the Apple device - even w/o the real metal body.

there is an app called sixaxis that lets you connect your playstation 3 controller through bluetooth and then you can map the buttons to have it do whatever you like. It's kinda nice.
