Can someone point me in the right direction about overclocking the vibrant to 1.2ghz. And things that I should worry about. Thanks

go into the development section and look for a thread that says [Kernel] Overstock and start reading
You can do two things:
Install a kernel that allows overclocking and use a program like SetCPU to turn up the speed.
or
Install Tegrak from the market.
You will need to experiment with different settings and voltages depending on your particular device.
Just like the guys said, Go to the dev forum and look for a kernel called Overstock. Download the 2.4.1 version and use tegrak to overclock from 1.0-1.3. Your choice.
Has to be said though, not every Vibrant handles overclocking so on the first sign of things going wrong, like sudden lags and reboots stop OCing.
Step one: Get root
Step two: Read about how to get root
Step three: Install a custom oc kernel
Step four: Post additional threads later on asking why your battery life sucks
Step five: Post additional threads later on asking why your phone isn't very stable
Step six: Post additional threads later on asking why your phone is broke.
Step seven: Get a new phone or send the one you have back to T-Mobile or Samsung
Step eight: Hope they (T-Mobile/Samsung) doesn't find you that you voided your warranty by achieving step 1.
Point taken thanks. I think I wont mess with OC.

Now don't get me wrong... many LOVE to overclock their devices. There are some great advantages to it.... but however there are drawbacks as well.
I was one of the very few that fried the insides of my phone by overclocking it. It couldn't detect the internal storage. I'm not saying which one it was b/c I don't want to single anyone out and that's not what I'm trying to do. What I am trying to do here is to point out that sometimes the risks are not worth the rewards. Yet another example is the oc kernal that I'm currently using. See signature. It's great! I can also run Avatar (most custom kernals won't let you and you will get an error when you try to play the movie) and it has BLN which is a MUST for me. But when I tried to install it, it completely wiped my internal storage. My backups and everthing. *POOF!* Gone. Again... it's a risk that you take and you will never realize it until AFTER you get the feeling of regret. It could happen immediately, it could happen months from now. Heck... it may never happen. But is the risk really worth it? If yes, then go ahead. If not... just stick with stock.
This is what im talking about. Otherthreads sugar coat things but you Sr. Gave me an honest answer
And I thank you for it.

Look at my signature. Yeah, it's fast as hell.
Crashing? Lol...none. It is VERY stable. Battery problems? 20 hours with moderate use. I would say it impacts it about 5-10% total even with my insane overclock.
Do note also that my phone doesn't like overclocking much in general. Many kernels in the past had stability issues past 1.3Ghz but I'm glad to say I have finally found my sweetspot and this thing is BLAZING
I haven't heard of anyone really "killing" their phone with an overclock. Worst you would do is random freezes requiring restarts cause you pushed it too much. You won't harm your phone, it just won't be stable if you go too far.

This is not related to overclocking your CPU, sir. This is related to you installing Dead Horse, a custom kernel which HAS the bug that it WIPES storage on some phones when it is installed. NOTHING to do with overclocking. Now, this has been fixed in its newer versions but when you used it, apparently it was still there. It was posted in BOLD BIG RED LETTERS that it will wipe your storage when you install it, I'm sorry that you couldn't read it or chose to ignore it. ALL CURRENT kernels are safe to use. They will not wipe or delete or do anything unusual to your phone after you install them.
As far as heat produced due to overclocking. I can reach 57C with a stock 1Ghz kernel as well as my 1.48Ghz current kernel. Granted, if I push my 1.48Ghz to 40C or higher, it starts crashing. I use a SetCPU profile to throttle it down to 1Ghz when the phone gets too hot so it doesn't crash. Usually it runs at 24-35C. Note that 40C feels rather hot when holding the phone and 50C feels like you are holding something on FIRE. Still, it is fine working in these temperatures (even if it is not good for it).
Overclocking with this phone is very "safe". The worst you can do is push it to where it is unstable and then it will TELL you its unstable and you've pushed it too far by CRASHING the phone. It is pretty obvious. It won't fry the phone. It won't damage it. And god forbid, it doesn't randomly wipe your storage. However, it WILL technically void your warranty. So if you DO break your phone due to something else and want to send it in for warranty, don't say you overclocked. Samsung and T-Mobile really don't have a way of telling if it was overclocked if you revert everything back to stock (ROM and kernel).

Yeah... he added that after I told him (post 38) about the issue my friend. And in post 43 he updated the OP smartass. Thanks anyway. I think I know how to read. Look I gave him an honest answer. There are always risks to doing anything. Can you deny that? If the device was specifically built to be overclocked past 1ghz then it would have been designed for it. I'm glad that everybody is having positive experiences but I'm a REALIST. I see posts all of the time where people have had problems with battery life, instability, wiped or destroyed storages, etc. I am an experienced user that does read the threads (regardless of what you think) and I feel that he should be warned. Yet, even I experience some of the very issues that I read about. Which is why I READ about them. You know what... I hope that something happens to yours. I really do. Just so you will actually know for certain what you're talking about because you're misleading the OP.
And in regards to this statement "I haven't heard of anyone really "killing" their phone with an overclock. Worst you would do is random freezes requiring restarts cause you pushed it too much. You won't harm your phone, it just won't be stable if you go too far."
How can you explain these?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11576415&postcount=259
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955593
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=956164
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955623
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957675
And more information for the OP that contradicts your 100% safe theory and your statement that you've never heard of anything getting "fried" then how else could my phone get a bad BGA component that required to replace the entire PBA? Oh! I forgot! That's normal... huh.
So your turn. Give us 100% undeniable evidence that it's 100% safe. Otherwise stop misleading people in the threads.
And if "ALL CURRENT kernels are safe to use. They will not wipe or delete or do anything unusual to your phone after you install them." was actually accurate then there wouldn't be the issue with Dead Horse now... would there? In my book that is a contradiction.
Look... not trying to discourage anybody here from at least trying it. But I'm saying that unless you want to have a quadrant score race or something like that then there is really no benefit to overclocking your phone. And by the way... it's a P-H-O-N-E. If you can place and receive calls then you are fullfilling it's intents and purposes. It has other features such as internet, mms, camera, speaker for playing music, etc. But it's no more a computer than it is a Kodak camera, Bose stereo, etc.
By current I mean CURRENT. Dead Horse doesn't wipe anymore I believe (though I stopped using it a good while back). Just about all T959 based kernels out now (DoW, Dragon, Overstock, Tiger's Blood, Bullet) do not have issues regarding to overclocking.
Also note the Hummingbird is a Cortex processor rated up to 1550mV or in other words 1.55V. The highest OCing Kernels push 1.5 Volts. Technically, this means the CPU is still within specs and hence why it is stable for the majority of people. Not all CPUs can do it though due to the physical layout of the PCB and phone and hence why it fails for some. Can it do pernament damage if you overclock?
If it crashes due to being unstable and you never restart it for an hour or so, it WILL likely do some damage. This is why I'm saying if you do it properly, it is safe to do. If you do it improperly, it does have a chance of doing damage to your phone though still unlikely.
ONE thing TO note however is that overclocking WILL shorten the lifespan of the CPU. Typically I believe processors are rated for roughly 50 years of usage. Overclocking will shorten that to roughly 10 years (with very extreme overclocking). This is still past the 2-3 years most people will keep it.
PS: Most of those bricks you linked were from an older version of the DOW kernel which had that "chance of bricking the phone" for a few days, kinda like Dead Horse had the "chance of wiping your memory". It was quickly taken down I recall and fixed but it did brick some people.
I'm not saying overclocking is foolproof. If you do it wrong, you will require a re-flash of the phone and in rare cases can cause damage to the hardware (Yes, it CAN. But you'd have to screw it up with either high temperature or over 1.55Volts). However, overclocking this phone is much safer than overclocking anything else.
Why is overclocking necessary afterall? Only for marginally higher quadrant scores? What real world app benefit from overclocking? I am sure it reduces battery life. So in my opinion - for normal use of phone, not only you don't gain anything but you lose something.

Since I rooted my phone yesterday, I decided to try an overclocker. I was saddened to see that it never registered mine as overclocking. I am using the Over Clock Widget. My processor runns at 528 and no higher, even when I select 585 or 600. Not a huge deal after I saw what was happening.
When it runs at 528 it runs nice and smooth and after 60 seconds, even while using, it drops to 480. When my screen goes off and then I use my phone again the processor is at 246 and won't adjust back up unless I reset it in the Over Clock Widget.
My question is, do you think this is an error with the Over Clock Widget or a phone issue. The visual performance lag I get existed before the app install and even before I rooted it, because I ran the linpack for android and got 0.807 for my MFLOPS. Then I ran it when it was showing 528, I got a 2.294 MFLOPS. Has anyone else seen this behavior. I always thought it was memory issue with the phone and have always used a task killer to clear up memory and performance was better, but now that I see what seems to be going on with the processor, I don't think it was memory now. When I reset it to 528 this phone runs smooth but as soon as it clocks down, back to lag and slow response.
Is there another app that would be setting my processor down that I'm not aware of? My next step is to wipe and reset the phone and run the linpack test and see what happens. I wanted to get thoughts before i do this though. Sorry this is so long.

I read alot! This is my first time trying to overclock so before purchasing a more than likely better over clocking app, I want to know if anyone else has seen this using other over clockers. I have read many people over clockign the Eris getting speeds of around 700mhz, but mine won't hit over 528 as mentioned.
The Original Eris Overclocking:THREAD HERE Didn't mention any of this if you might have been refering to that thread.
Was that menat to be helpfull. I searched all across XDA and found not notable information on this. I read what I could but nothing that mentions what I have described above. If you have a link that has some information on this issue, please post. Looking for some feedback though still.
During your overclocking search on xda, did you happen to come across the setCPU thread? The app that you have to pay for on the market that is free there for xda uers? Search setCPU.
Also, most roms are already oc'd @ 710 without any app at all to control it.

he's more than obviously running the stock 2.1 rooted with an oc widget!
relax, flame off boys.
if you want to overclock there are several roms that are set to overclock by default(easiest method)
or you could flash a new kernel if you want to stay stock(not so easy for a new guy method)
and then there is always the i want to know whats going on write my own kernel method(much less easy then any other method listed)
if you want the stock feel only with all the root perks try plain jane. and as for posting a new thread like this feel free to PM me at any time before putting yourself out on a limb for the boys to jump on you im glad to help anyone avoid catching the heat/ informing ANYBODY
Yep thanks for the response guys. I am running stock. Just freaked me out when I saw that ahppening. Thought I might have had a screwed up phone. I will PM next time Sj. Thanks..still reading though. SetCPU did bring up more than just using overclocking which pointed more towards kernel rewrites and custom roms.
Hello there XDA I just switched to the Aria from the Captivate. I am new to Android modding, so please bear with me.
I like the phone, It doesnt bother me losing screen space. However it is a bit slow with the 600 MHZ processor.
So if there are some people kind enough to guide me to/through the following it would be appreciated.
1. I would like to overclock it a bit, maybe to 800.
2. General performance tweaks
3. Get rid of Att bloatware
4. Root ( z4root is not in the market anymore and ATT disables side loading.)

Hey Joshua, being new to the Aria as well (less than a month), I haven't looked into overclocking it... but I am running CM 6.1 RC 2, what do I need to do to start overclocking?
Install SetCPU to overclock. I wouldn't go over 825mhz as it starts getting unstable.
As for rooting, search for posts by user asiancuta. He did a really good write up that included a key point I didn't see anywhere else. It's titled NOOBZ: easy guide to rooting your aria.... Read all instructions, and make sure you understand it first.
To install cyanogenmod 6.1 rc2 do a search for That aria - she's so racy!

In the other overclocking thread (or overcloking as the OP spelled it ) several people posted that they were running at 864... what type of instability is likely? Also, doesn't overclocking HAVE to have some sort of adverse effect? Like reduced reliability or an increased likelihood of hardware failure? If there are no adverse effects, why would HTC not set the CPU higher from the factory?

I always lean on the side of caution when it comes to overclocking a phone. I don't want to fry the processor since I can't replace it as easily as one on a computer.
Processors are never set from the factory to run at their fastest.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
While it might seem odd since all these phones have the same hardware they don't all respond the same to overclocking. Some people can do 864. I can't even get my phone to do anything over 825 and even 825 gives me issues. I like to keep mine between 768-787. Over doing it can cause damage and shorten the life of the processor but keeping it around 800 is probably safe as long as you moniter temps. Heat is the real enemy here. Manufacturers are trying to balance cost, reliability, battery life. Our little phone use a smaller battery and so a lower clock speed keeps the phone running longer. And the aria is a mid range phone, they don't want it to be faster than the more expensive phones. Also Higher clock speeds will drain your battery faster. At 768 the phone is noticeably snappier and the battery drain over stock isn't even noticeable.
Huh. That's good to know, Callmearia. However I don't even know where to start on any of this. I've never 'flashed' a phone or anything like that before.

This is a really good guide explaining how to root your phone and install a custom recovery, Clockwork, with which you can flash ROMs, make backups, and a bunch of other stuff:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788737
You will still not be able to sideload apps just by rooting though. You will need to flash a ROM in order to do that. Check out the Android Development section, it is all there.

I think most people can hit 864 now using CM6.1 RC2. I think some tweaks were made to allow it. Before I was only hitting 825mhz or 844mhz when I ran in to stability problems... but now I have none. Or, it could be due to the fact it's colder here now.
Alright, so after some adb troubles with Ubuntu 10.10, I am now rooted, woo!
So now, where to go from here?
This worked flawlessly and easy. Less than 5 minutes

EDIT : I see that you already got rooted.
You have two choices for Attn1's custom ROMS
Liberated or Cyanogenmod

Take in mind that CM has more customizable features, INCLUDING OVERCLOCKING. Liberated doesn't.
Place the .zip on your SD card. Enter clockworkmod recovery by holding down the volume down button after restarting phone. Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache. Go to install zip from Sdcard. Pick the file. It should install. wait, and reboot and continue.
Customize it to your liking. Download apps/widgets
Turn off unnecessary background items. (Auto Sync)
Decrease Brightness
Only use GSM networks
(these are battery saving tips....lots more)

That is the SetCPU for XDA members.
To install, go through ADB in the command line, or download FASTAPP Install from the Market and place the .apk on your sd card and install it from there.

Its different for every one. My VM is a local number. You can always just use your phone number.
I recently set my VM to go thru my Google Voice number now.

Using my own number worked.
However, now my phone is freezing randomly, and causing the launcher to hang. (ADW and LauncherPro both do this)
It seems android.process.acore always takes alot of CPU time when it does this.
Just wondering what you are all clocked at
and if stable.
Currently at 1.4 myself and running smooth

I don't even know how to overclock it. Does one need a custom ROM for that or does the stock one suffice? Not that it really matters, I mostly just read comics or books or watch movies on my tablet, none of which needs that much CPU.
Greece during the summer can get quite hot, so it's definitely not a friendly place for overclockers, even desktop rigs can feel the extra heat, so for me, overclocking will not happen for another 3 months minimum. Even now, at stock 3.1 the tablet can get pretty hot when playing some HD games.
I'm sure only root is required but I agree - pushing the cores for nothing more than reading, watching movies or playing already tablet optimized games seems like a pointless endeavor and certainly dangerous to the long term health of the tablet.

I am happily running mine @ 1.6 and very stable with no fc. Did have it higher @ 1.7 but had major problems with reeboots. Benchmark above taken with current rom @1.6
Try "StabilityTest" from the Market to see what your device can handle.
Mine ran 2 hours without problems on 1.5GHz but crashed after 17mins on 1.6GHz.
Running the tablet at 1.5GHz makes a big difference, everything is much more responsive and the browser is way faster.
Can you suggest me the right app to overclock my iconia? And what I have to do to set that apps? I had some doubts with options like "interactive, on demand, ...etc". Which one could give a little bit of stability? I can't find any guide on the internet to understand what these settings change, and which one is the better way to optimize our tablet.

just in case people doesnt know
the mainboard are stressed on a bench before go outside and get sell
put the mainboard in a OVEN (not yours at home, it's a special OVEN) then after 1 hour at something like 60 - 70 degrees running
All mainboard got an error are returned to check and fixed
but
overclocking does not give you that much improvement...
for sure optimized kernel with slight overclock are running smother than the stock stuck at 1GHz but.... when people are crying to have not enought battery... why overclocking ???? the things who use more battery is the SOC and the SCREEN....
I run for now Stock 4.010.24 with Stock Kernel (I will go back to custom firwmare when all will be ok and stable)
games are running perfectly... when they are dev for the tegra

What the hell are you babbling about and what does that even have to do with the discussion?
I don't even know if I understand you correctly since you're not even trying to make coherent sentences, but if you're referring to components on the motherboard being loose then there's WAY better ways of fixing that than throwing the whole thing in an oven of any kind. You should NEVER fry the whole motherboard just to fix one or two components that are loose, instead just apply a heatgun on those specific components. Besides, AFAIK none of the issues with A500 are related to loose parts...
His post has everyting to do with this thread and nothing about "loose parts" He is refering to the physical conditions the parts are subject to ie......Heat. Which in turn is increased by overclocking the passively cooled processor. Which is not very efficent and can easily overheat. Its ok if you don't understand plain English, but your post is obnoxious...

When it was returned i immediately unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. Now my scores from Antutu are 4500 at best. I am using the exact same rom (Neutrino), and kernel (Faux123) as before. I have tried other roms (cm7 nightlies) reinstalled and full fastboot wipe many times but still the same outcome. The only difference i can see is that i used an different method to unlock the bootloader and root the second time around. Do you think the some of the permission where affected differently the second time around. Am i just overlooking something?
HELP!!!!!!
thks
Is the phone actually slower? Or just scoring lower scores?

the phone actually feels slower. more laggy when it comes to videos, games, scrolling through menus. my fps scores are all lower across the board in any benckmark. yes i know they mean nothing but when the scores are that drastically effected there is an issue i believe.

I have heard that refurbished phones USUALLY don't perform as well as the brand new ones do. Here is my example, a refurbished Atrix I read from some users can't even sometimes boot a custom kernel when the custom kernel is around 1.45 to 1.6. For example the one kernel that the dev clemsyn. I saw a FEW mention that when they said they had a refurbished Atrix.

There is a "Boost.sh" script included with Neutrino (I believe in /system/etc) that Notorious recommends be run when you get that "not so fresh" feeling. It is a defrag tool that can be assigned to a widget and should be run every so often.
Also, you will want to see if "Nitrocharger.sh" in the same directory is running as Root at Boot. I have seen big improvements by implementing this.
Both of these scripts came with the ROM, so hopefully you have fast access to them. Good luck to you!
thanks for the info fellow xdaers,,,,,

Actually I had the opposite experience. My original phone wouldn't boot with the clemsyn kernel. My digitizer bombed and I received a refurbished unit from repairs. The new unit runs the clemsyn kernel just fine. So I guess it's just the luck of the draw...

As tob said, those "so verry little script" can makes big differences sometimes
I would like to add my personal toughts, for me, the ROM actually scoring higher and higher and feel a litle bit more freshier each week past within the ROM... so my thoughts would be, the cache partition, the more longer the rom is implemented, the more score you'll get cause the cache slowly become bigger and bigger giving you full power to open something tough!
As for the battery, from my experiences, you can't really judge a battery life while you just flashed a rom, you got to wait until the first week to see if there a big changes between the other ROM you came from ... so my guess would be, those scripts and the longer the ROM is implemented on your phone, the more fast and stable it will get, and you will feel the power slowly coming out again!
My bad if I'm completely wrong, but it is my guess!
Hood luck with your "new" phone
i brought up some old Antutu scores and notice that my ram. cpu integar and floating point scores are extremely low. i have tried multiple kernels but still no change. now i am even more confused......doesn't take much. could it be that my cpu is locked so i can not overclock. it kinda feels like its only utilizing one core.
after weeks of exhaustive searching i finally found a fix that worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131649
pdsfix.zip
now my antutu scores are back up to around 7000. less lag in app drawer and opening /closing certain app. its back to silky smooth yeehaw.
Is it at all possible to overclock my phone I've heard about it but not sure

Yeap, but you to have to flash either a custom rom and kernel, or just a stock based custom kernel.
For example you can flash CM 12.1 and use Renix63's kernel which features CPU overclock, custom governors & I/O schedulers etc. Search the S3 Threads, there's everything to answer any of your questions. If you need help by finding something specific, I can you list you the corresponding threads for unlocking/rooting and a rom&kernel to keep up with the latest progress.
I would not be too excited however, overclock is not really needed on our device, only if you need to run an heavy game
The phone gets pretty hot as it is so I wouldn't do it if I were you.
Excuse me fellas, but I have my phone overclocked without any issues. I'm getting a faster response and I haven't faced any high temp. So, before replying, have it tested, because it seems that you got the answers from the back of your head. He doesn't care if there are problems, you won't prevent him, or better, you dont have the privilege to do so.
Check my signature. @1497Mhz (I had it @1593 for a while), with a great enough battery life, better responsiveness and a cool phone.
