Media volume is quiet. - Streak 5 General

I have had my dell streak for a few months now and im starting to notice that the media volume dosent go as high as I would like it to. Ive tried using volume booster apps or media players with ajustable equalizers. Im even concidering a portable headphone amp so I can use my sennheisers without them being to quiet. What would be the best way to increase the maximum volume of the phone?

Ive read some articles saying that you need to use a custom rom but I have no idea how that works.

The sad part is in the original 1.6 rom the headphone volume was normal to me as in it was loud like my ipod touch. When i updated to 2.2.2 its now not as loud which is dumb. i would like to be able to hook it into my car cd player and actually have volume like before. oh and i am also i am using a custom rom. streakdroid 1.9 and its is not as loud as well any one fiound a fix for this or mabey some of the devs see this and address this issue in their next build.....PLZ?

Same darn problem
Ever since 2.2, media volume via headphones especially, is too low!

I reduce volume to 0 still hearing noise sound..
My dell streak sound quality is bad. When I reduce volume to 0 still hearing noise sound (playing mp3 or video). I am using at&t 2.2. can it solve via software update? is it hardware problem?
thanks!

Did anyone find a solution to the low media volume ? Im also noticing its very low, and im on streakdroid 1.9 with the volume hack installed but even that hasnt made it loud like it should be.

I find its perfectly loud, any louder and you're going to damage our ears. what headphones are people using. I'm using the Sennheiser CX 300-II excellent headphones for how cheap they are, i do use poweramp, with slight volume increase on the preamp. But if i whack it up anymore its to loud and i get distortion in the headphones.

Yeah i find the rear speaker to be very low when playing music, running copilot and many other apps. Infact the only app i've noticed to have a loud volume with the streak is bbci player. This wasnt the case on the original stock rom (316 i believe) so its something to do with 2.2.2. Before upgrading my streak was quite loud all round.

Hmmmm. I think I am sticking with not updating to 2.2.2 at this time.

you can cup you hand round the speaker to amplify the sound like a gramophone works. Its aslo a comfortable way to hold the phone as well.
Hope this helps as a workround.

me too...
after upgrading from 2.2 to 2.2.2 I've noticed a significant decrease in ringtone, media and alarm volume, there is also a flickering noise in ear speaker during calls which is very annoying.
If there is no solution to this, I'm thinking to switch back to 2.2

I had been listening mp3 on android based HD2 with the high of %65.
Now with that dell streak I have been listening %90 or 100 and while in the middle of the city, %100 may not be loud enough.
I do not care ringtone speaker vs. The only low sound level I care is the sound level via 3.5mm wired headphone media volume. I also use minimalisting program tiny player which has no eq or visual effects.

It sounds loud enough on the headphones but when you try to plug it into any external speaker or amp like a car stereo or an xmi speaker the audio volume limiting system that they included with 2.2, the output is too low. It's a bummer that you can't turn off the avls like a lot of other devices. Dumb, I wish they'd fix it, I'd love to use it in the car but it's way too quiet.

Hmmm, 2.2.2 is definitely on the low side...what's the deal of such low volume - isn't the Streak a multimedia device as well? The volume is a shame - even my old phones' volumes are louder. Hope they fix this up in their next firmware. I really can't understand the idea to lower the volume - aren't there people who test the firmwares and made this remark at Dell before releasing??

guys, stop complaining and provide solutions for the ****ty sound, we all know it ain't loud enough...
Hopefully someone will provide solutions to increasing and improving sound.
Complaining about it won't make it any louder, we need a proper fix!!

What headphones do you use? I max out the volume with my Denon D1001s but I find that's just enough for me.. I would like to have the option of going higher though
I use Mixzing player for my music as it has an Equalizer. You can adjust the overall gain to increase volume. Don't go to crazy with the different bands on the EQ though or you might get some occasional skipping in songs.
I set the eq to 5 bands and adjust the bass band up a little. The app has nice widgets and is overall nicely polished.
Hope that helps! I can't stand going back to mediascape after using it. There is a free version with ads but its very much worth the 4 or 5 dollars (whatever it was) to get rid of the ads.
At the moment i am just using the ones that came with it, i do have a £17 pair of samsung ones but they are about the same. I was wondering if a pair with lower impedance might help.
I will take a look at mixzing though.
Thanks guys.
I use iems and have never had to bump the volume past 60%. They are expensive but my westone um1s lasted me 5 years. $150 over 5 years equals 30 per year. Good deal imo.
And I just upgraded to the westone 3s and never thought I could get such good audio quality from a phone
I may buy some better ones to try, I fancy trying some sennheiser ones.

I also have W3's and Shure e500's. GREAT phones. Maybe I have sensitive ears, but even at level 1, they're WAY TOO LOUD in a quiet environment. The loudest I've had it was at 50% and that was on an airplane and I need to use a volume attenuator to keep the loudness managable.
If you guys need to max out the volume, you either have serious hearing loss and/or crappy phones/bleeding sound. Maxing out the volume is Very bad for your ears. Even with the volume safety cap, max volume is Very loud and damaging.
Impedance is mostlikely not an issue here, but proper fit and positioning of the phones is probably the culprit.

Yeah, it can get loud on public transportation and not all phones are good for blocking it out.
I used to have a pair of cheapish sony cups that did pretty well, but that was also when I used to listen to music at higher volumes and hadn't realized how loud it was before I switched to iems several years ago. Now I know better, but only when it comes to this...lolz
Using actual headphones seems to be enough from the few that I have tried. But when I connect the X10 to a portable external speaker system the volume is insufficient. Compared to my iphone friends, it just doesnt have the juice.

External Speaker Quality ?

Hello,
I was just reading a review on Hemorrdroids.
http://hemorrdroids.net/htc-desire-hd-review/
in the review it is quoted that the external speaker was something your mates will laugh at as the quality is that poor ?
I am hoping to upgrade to this phone in a couple of weeks. I was just wondering if that is that statement true ? I do use my external speaker sharing you tube videos with my mates at work. I can't imagine it being that bad.
Cheers for your help !!!

if you are familiar with the other HTC phones such as the Desire and Nexus One, then this is pretty much the same on the HD. Quality is "bearable", but it is simply not loud enough. Max setting on the Desire HD is approx60-70& of Milestone Speaker loudness.
Yep, its the worst I have had...but the quality of the phone makes up for it.
Well its not good but to say its really bad.. when you use dolby mobile its okay.. and when you use dolby mobile on headset its AWESOME!! best i've ever heard on any phone / mp3 player
Yes I can confirm that. I just got mine, first thing I tested is external speaker volume, media playback sound, ringtones, etc. For the so called media abilities touted for the DHD I have to say the exernal speakers for both sound quality & more importantly loudness is pathetic.
I have a normal Desire, a iPhone 4 & a Samsung Galaxy S to compare it to right here I'm afraid to say its definately not in the same league as the latter 2 & even the Desire which I find quite tinny seems to go louder.
Maybe someone will make an audio hack so it goes louder!

I just find it so annoying, look at the San Fran, £99 and it's speaker is FAR better. Come on HTC!!!
The speaker is rubbish, it's just not loud enough. You can't even hear the GPS talking in a car lol.
If you want to see how sad it is, ive just updated the video thread with it in the bugs/problems sections a guy had some laugh with it.
to be honest the sound quality through the headphones is far more important to me. I guess it depends how you use the phone. Im just glad that people say the quality through a good pair of headphones is awesome!

im skeptical of how awesome it is, ive been spoiled with sound quality with my cowon S9 and Q-jays IEM's, im hoping that the DHD will sound on par with the cowon however i doubt it will be
awesome compared to iphone/ipod ....now that i can see
Speaker is woeful
I can also confirm that the external speaker is really disappointing. I criticised the original Desire for poor speaker volume and the promise of Dolby Mobile and SRS was one of the deal breakers in choosing to upgrade to the HD.
The ringtone selection is limited because you need to look for ones that are naturally loud. Forget watching some videos on the awesome screen when you can't hear the audio. I guess SatNav is going to be difficult too.
I use MixZing to improve speaker output for music when earphones are not nearby. But unless a hack appears to increase native volume, it's going to be a problem for a lot of people.
As a plus point, sound through ear/headphones is very impressive. Still needs a volume boost but perfectly acceptable for music playback.
Reminds me of the streak when i got it on 1.6 the speaker was quiet and made odd noises when put up full then came 2.1 its louder and clearer....Quite possibly a retarded software safety limit implemented.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
this is a deal breaker for me!
i thought with the SRS and all other crap they advertised that the speakers would be a bit decent! i have the n1 and the loud speaker and earpiece just total crap even with the hack to make them louder...
been missing a lot of calls cuz can't hear the phone (don't like vibration) ringing and when listening to the other side i try to find a quite place to listen to them as if i raise the volume the sound become very high pitched ..
damn you HTC i though the loud speaker would be at least like the ones in the EVO which is quite good!
a 50 bucks Chinese phone has far way better speaker than this crappy 700+ phone
hmm maybe most HTC's employees are bats! use high pitched frequencies to communicate
Can anyone compare the loudspeaker with HD2 ? HD2 seems even too loud for me.

Any audiophiles around, using their Streak as a music source ?

I was hoping to use this device as my music source but now that I've got it, I am highly disappointed. I expected it to be at least equal to my netbook's sound card but somehow it didn't perform.
Currently I am using Head Direct RE-0 with the Streak. Well these are high impedance IEMs and this may be the reason why I am not getting a good output so I am planning to try some other IEMs and thats precisely why I created this thread.
Can you guys recommend me something, if you've tried or already using them.
Did anyone try the Monster Turbines with the Streak ? Dell itself is selling these so I am hoping someone might have bought them. Can I get some impressions ?
I know I may be asking too much but and expecting too much from this device, but "One Device For All" was my thought behind buying this device.
BTW I've tried some other audio tools in the market (read poweramp) but the SQ of default player is way better so sticking to that and thus my only option left is another pair of IEMs. Suggest me some
Think you hop over to headfi for your quest which you might have a better chance of finding answers. I personally still using imod > amp > custom instead of a phone to achieve "audiophile" quality.
I have already posted my observations here on a similar thread a few months ago, so please bear with me if I don't repeat myself.
My interest in responding is that you have the very same IEMs as me. I also have IE8s with custom moulds which formed the basis my original post so I thought to try again with the RE0s in the light of your comments.
My experience with the RE0s is good, though my preference lies with the IE8s. I use PowerAMP with equaliser set to Off and my files are FLAC.
Having spent much time on HeadFi I know that these things can be subjective, so to each his own, but I am very pleased with the Streak as an audio player.
FWIW my reference is iBassoD10 and iRiverH140 with optical digital interconnect.
^^^
I am glad to hear that and thanks a lot for your observations.
Somehow to me the sound signature of PowerAmp did sound thin and with the already "not so warm" RE-0, the overall experience wasn't that great.
Another thing is that I am not in a position to spend a lot on the IEMs so IE8 won't be possible for me.
Can you suggest me something under 100USD or max 150USD, that you think can work great with the Streak ?
look around amazon. i got my ie8s for about 200 bucks US
I also use an audio technica portable headphone amp (one of those pocket ones) improves the sound quality a lot more

I would agree exactly with that. It is as if the Streak produces the wrong characteristics for the RE0.
I was very impressed when I used the Streak with the IE8s but less so with the RE0.
It is a sidetrack, on the other hand the Sansa Clip works well with the RE0. This sort of synergy is great when it works out in our favour and frustrating when it doesn't.
If you like I could try the Streak/RE0 combination with a Fiio E5 amplifier.

Yes please, if thats not much of a trouble. Would be highly appreciated.
This is a rather quick impression with the E5.
With the Bass Boost On the mid/lower range is much more filled out and emphasised and overall is preferable. However the treble correspondingly suffers which is not preferable. With the Bass Boost Off I would prefer the unamp’d Streak.
Contrary to the opinions over at HeadFi I am not a fan of amp’d headphone out signal. The only way it makes sense is to have a dedicated Line Out, preferably digital. Otherwise what is being amplified is the signal from an inferior source amplifier.
Maybe someone will make a PDMI Line Out Dock, now that would be something.
If you can get the E5 cheap enough it might be worth trying, I paid £7.50 for mine so can’t complain and worth it just to have the option available. But £17 seems a bit steep. Though you can get them on eBay for about £12. It is easy to get into a law of diminishing returns with these things.
Personally I would just accept the nature of the Streak/RE0 combination and enjoy the open spaciousness and clarity and see the lack of bass as a tradeoff. Not all music needs a strong bass.
Hi,
Personally I find that whatever I use as earphones, I have a hard time accepting the noise level on the streak. When playing music at a medium volume, the noise is really very very present.
I suppose there is no work around is there? Doesn't this bother you for serious listening?
Hi
You surprise me there. What do you mean by noise level? I don't understand.
My Streak is pefectly quiet apart from the the music that is playing.
^^^
I get that noise as well. Its there as long as the music application is working and goes away when the app is closed. Sure is irritating.
I've found another way to get my music working.
Found this app foobar2000remote control or something. If this works on my streak, I can just put away my audio rig away, snap on the earphones and lie down on my bed, leaving myself to the music. All the foobar controls will then be accessible from my streak.
But again, this app is not working YET for me. I was able to test it out on http, on my netbook. Just that the streak is still being able to communicate with my netbook's foobar.
Soon !!!!

O dear! You're a luck mann! I have a noise in the background whenever playing. When I put the music in pause, the noise disappears after a second (automatic mute control I think), but as soon as I play again, the nois is there, very present! It is a constant level of noise, independent of the volume I set the music to. When I set volume to max, the music is so loud (too loud!) that I don't hear the noise anymore. But when setting it to say 70 perecnt, the noise is too presnt. Its ok-ish... but it definetly is not good (no hifi installation or decent MP3 player produces that much noise).
Any idea where this might come from? How come you have no noise???
Thanks
I also have the noise problem. I am using a UM3X and the quality is good enough except the background noice is very annoying. Is there anyway to cancel the background noice?

I too get this background noise, as well as a subtle "click" sound when the audio output is turned off/on. I've been contemplating Bluetooth headphones as a work around...

This really sucks.. Why are we having this hiss noise? I'm on build 347, stock from dell. It's only been couple days since I got mine.
I saw in DJStreak's mod, there's volume boost mod, but my earphone volume levels are perfectly fine. So I don't think I need any boost feature. It's just the background hiss noise. It stays on the same level of noise whether I up the volume or play music in low volume.
Everything is fine on my streak,no hiss electricity sound.Still,I think my philip mp3 can do a better job than the streak.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
No hiss for me either. I'm on 351. Didn't try with 347 when I got the Streak last week.
There are several things going on here, I think.
1. The majority of Dell's hardware is identical to the Nexus One, Incredible, etc. Those generation phones probably used the same hardware. That hardware is not particularly impressive when it comes to providing clear headphone audio. Its is possible that some phones are better than others, but unlikely. It is probably due to Reason #2.
Here is the RightMark test for the Nexus: http://www.swedroid.se/rightmark/Google Nexus One/googlenexusone.htm
Here is an iPhone 4 + couple of other phones: http://www.swedroid.se/rightmark/optimus2x/rightmark.htm
The iPhone has a lower noise floor and overall cleaner headphone amp (harmonic distortion esp).
2. The circuit buzz we hear mostly shows up with high end/high sensitivity headphone and in-ear monitors. I think it is a lot less noticeable with basic earbuds.
Also, everyone has a different level of hearing.
To conclude, no - this phone is not a good source for FLACs with good headphones. It is good enough for Pandora streaming and MP3s. If you are serious about portable sound quality, I would look for a dedicated DAP of some kind. It hurts me to say, but to this day many phones haven't matched the Apple headphone amp/DAC chips. I would love to finally own a phone where I can consolidate all my geeky needs.

Is there any volume boost apps such as the ones used on GNEX?

Just flash this equalizer and turn up the equalizer settings and you will get louder sounds.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012575
Compared to the GNex, I thought the N4 was super loud! lol
The equalizer is more of a software side fix. I think the op is referring to something that actually sets the hardware output higher similar to what the voodoo apps do. This results in a cleaner non distorted sound compared to just boosting eq levels.

voodoo works because the inbuilt AMP can be controlled on a wolfson; other software that is universal on all hardware audio solutions like volume+ and others more than likely just adjusts gain.
the DSP manager fix is probably the best all round software based solution as it can be boosted via EQ ( not great cause it can cause clipping), gain adjustments and DRC.
software solutions are not ideal however and i would suggest an external portable amp if your headphones require a hifi level power source, but for most portable gear (Even high end) the N4 is perfectly fine.
The output of the speaker is fine but I definitely notice the volume is lower with headphones then the Gnex. I personally don't like DSP etc as it always makes things sound distorted. The NS with Voodoo was like the best ever sound I got on my headphones.

coming from a galaxy S II the N4 volume seems much lower for certain things. The in call volume is louder however things like notifications seem lower even at the highest level. Not stoked about it.
Haven't tried it but saw this:

Speaker is actually loud. Tried different sets of top ear pieces and headphones and it was real low.
The DSP manager prescribed above helped tho.

Temporary fix for Low Volume
I just received my Nexus a few days ago, and noticed the low volume.THe speakerphone is ok, but music and youtube a bit low. It's funny how the "professional" reviewers say the speaker is loud.
Anyway, I found a temporary fix for the music volume, until Google gets off their a__es and fixes the problem.Download Player Pro Trial from the Play Store.
On the effects menu, crank up the bass and volume knobs ,leave the EQ off. When you turn on the reverb button the volume bumps up a few notches. It works on headphone and speaker volume and it's a nice music player too.I think the full version is 5 bucks.
i think this paid $1 app works, even on franco kernel to increase speaker volume, in my bathroom, music is pretty loud!
its made for faux kernels

I like this app better, It works with a large number of kernels.. even stock

Its been working well for me, also has the added ability to touchwake, for those times when the screen times out.
edit: It will boost speaker and headphones volume. You can also adjust mic gain and a number of other cool shizz. Seriously Check it out

Output volume sucks

So I've recently been using my tablet to play music onto my nice dj style headphones. But output volume and quality is absolutely horrendous. I have to be at full volume to get and reasonably level sound, and then when I'm at that level, everything is very distorted. On my one X which has some beats eq thing, sound is wonderful and much louder. Maybe this is just a problem with stock Android, but I need to find some way to get much higher quality and more importantly louder music. I've tried a few mods available here but they don't seem to do much.

What mods have you tried. I use awesome beats on my galaxy nexus. If not that trickster mod app has a setting to make the volume high. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I have my galaxy nexus stock and rooted.

I have tried awesome beats and it doesn't seem to do much. I also tried AC!D mod and for some reason, whenever I started to play audio, my tablet would freeze up

I haven't used much except for DSP, but the audio is just difficult to have it loud. I've found external speakers BT or through audio jack is the only way to go.
Be careful what you try because I've read about people blowing their speaker trying to increase volume. That being said volume+ from the play store worked when it wasn't fighting the other sound mods I had installed. Pimp my ROM app. has some flashable zips that helped. Bottom line its one of the sacrifices that kept the price of the N7 low. Better the speaker to be mediocre rather than the screen. I bought some ear buds and if I want to play it loud for the neighbors I jack in to a stereo. Also a set of desktop computer speakers (sub and two bookshelf) work great with tablets

I use my N7 speaker to listen to music and get quite surprised and how loud it gets and don't notice any distortion. So I'm not experiencing what you are. Maybe I'm just easily pleased and aren't as passionate about audio quality as others
Sorry to say this but, it will never sound good. Not even with sound mods. The sound chip inside the N7 is just really, really bad. I've tried it with a pair of $900 Shure headphones and nothing can save this thing.
