Will At&t's new HSDPA network upgrade ( to be completed by Oct 2010 hopefully ) be compatible with the current HTC HD's HSDPA technology? Ie,, will it be the same as Europe runs now and result in the HD getting up to 7.2 Mbps? All the posts I've read about the HD currently not being compatible with US 3G (other than the Telstra version) never mentions this.
There must be multiple HSDPA technologies 'cuz currently on At&t's web site they say "The AT&T 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS technology (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System), which makes it possible to enjoy ...... " So I'm assuming the HD does not use HSDPA/UMTS,, but some other HSDPA technology?
I've had my eye on the HD for quite some time, currently owning the 8525,, and could live with EDGE for now,, but would really help shell out the $$ for an HD if I knew that in a year or so, it would be capible of using it's existing HSDPA technology.

AT&T today announced specific plans for upgrading its 3G network to provide double the current data speeds. HSPA 7.2 will be deployed in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami by the end of the year. By the end of 2010, the company will have upgraded 25 of the top 30 markets, and 90 percent of its 3G network area by the end of 2011. AT&T is simultaneously upgrading the backhaul connections at each tower location, providing each tower with faster data connections to the network and the Internet, sufficient to support not only HSPA 7.2 but even faster LTE technology in the future. The company expects to have six HSPA 7.2-compatible smartphones available by the end of the year, (already available are the iPhone 3GS and HTC Fuze,) as well as two new laptop data cards.
So, again, I ask,,, does anyone know if this is the same platform that Europe currently uses and all the non 3G Touch HD's will be able to operate at 7.2 Mps?

He answered the post - the only compatible version of the Touch HD is the Telstra one.
Just because AT&T are increasing the speed of their network, that's in no way the same as changing the frequencies it runs on.
If they did that, they would immediately render a large number of their existing customer's current handsets completely incompatible.

As you can see, there seems to be a lot of contradictory information from seemingly knowledgeable people.
My goal is to find a way to get the X1i on Rogers' 850 band they use in most places where they advertise 3G coverage. This might also be beneficial to some AT&T users as I believe they use the same bands.
I live in a suburb of Montreal. I never get anything better than EDGE and same goes when I am in class on the island of Montreal. However, when I go out once in a while and end up in downtown, in my drunken stupor I notice a little 3G symbol where the E used to be... Ha! My guess is that Rogers is using 850MHz all over the place and 1900MHz downtown. It would make more sense because '850' is better for covering vast areas that aren't so populated and '1900' is better at covering densely populated areas (downtown!).
My phone uses the Sony Ericsson supplied ROM for UK (OEM R3..) with a the 1.17 radio found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565182 .
Here's something I discovered that triggered the spark:
-press the call button (get to the dialer)
-press menu (bottom right)

-band
I am now presented with a box to chose my GSM/UMTS band:
"Auto"
"GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900)"
"GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)"
"UMTS(2100)"
UMTS 1900 and 850?? Well well well...
Okay...still EDGE... Another phone (Samsung) supplied by Rogers has 3G right beside me.
Come on people, this really shows that the ROM is intended for a quad band phone. Plus there was a thread that I cannot find anymore with posted PDF's of the phone's chipset specs and it mentioned nothing of the phone being physically different between the X1i and X1a in terms of networking...
I really want to get the ball rolling on this because I have yet to see any solid proof that the X1i cannot do UMTS 850.
you sir, are my savior. thank you for posting and starting this thread. i myself have an X1i in the states and have been reading and reading about this for months on end with lots of conflicting information.
i can connect to HSDPA and Edge network, but never 3G. ONE TIME i saw the 3G logo for about 2 seconds, then it switched over to HSDPA...... i just can't stand the super duper slow edge network

correct, but HSDPA doesn't cover everywhere. in some deadspots i'm only on Edge, and i always wonder if i could get 3G instead.....
@ Jonny4911 : HSDPA IS TO 3G what EDGE is to GPRS...that's a good analogy I can think of. Yes, it is faster than regular 3G.

Hannigan is right with this link, in that you cannot force the X1i to use HSDPA/HSPA+ on the 850mhz band, because it is not in the hardware. With all of the knowledgeable people out there, if it was possible to change it by flashing/hacking/etc., then it would have been done by now. I don't believe that we'll see 850mhz HSPA+ on our X1i's.
That being said, I myself have noticed my lil' ol' X1i receiving the "H" symbol while in the boonies (far away from the downtown core). I believe this is because there have been reports that Rogers is ramping up their support for HSPA+ on the 1900mhz band, in preparation for the Olympics out west. If this is the case, then the ODD time that your phone does not find the 850mhz band (or 1900mhz is more prevalent/strong), then it will hop on that frequency and you'll be able to use HSDPA.
What I was looking for, was not a hack to enable 3G on the X1i's 850mhz band, but rather some kind of "band preference" setting where you could force phone to look for and connect to the 1900mhz band over the 850mhz band (or even disable 850mhz all together, but that might give us less reception). As far as I know (and have been hunting the net), this isn't quite possible.
I am thinking that our (well, specifically mine because of where I live), only hope is that if Rogers continues to grow their 1900mhz network which supports HSDPA, and hopefully our X1i's will choose that network over the 850mhz one. My only worry with this is that the phone might see both frequencies, and pick the 850mhz one because it has more penetration in densely packed areas, making it the primary choice for the phone (since the 1900mhz signal would probably be weaker).
Anyways, I'm speculating a bit, as well as reporting the facts that I've heard from users on this forum and others (HowardForums has a topic open as well).
Let's hopefully continue to keep this thread going as a base reference for our issue here, because getting 3G/HSDPA on our X1i's would SIGNIFICANTLY improve our usability!
@andreitu just to clear one thing up for you, the X1i is a quad band phone, however the quad band is only in reference to GSM bands and does not apply to UMTS bands. The X1i is only Tri band UMTS...
To anyone getting the HSDPA in the US with an X1i, it's because the area you are in is served by a UMTS 1900 enabled cell. (i'm in dallas and am almost always on HSDPA on AT&T)...

It wasn't just a link, I was quoting myself. It was a link to something I already said in another thread that covered the EXACT same thing.
Maybe I have been here too long, but I am starting to get irritated by seeing the same questions numerous times. I will at least give the thread starter some credit for showing an attempt to look at other threads first, but please do multiple google searches related to your subject before starting a thread.
This question was asked a lot when the phone was new. The 1900/850 option in Phone Settings is just a hardcoded dropdown. It does not magically enable WCDMA on 850MHz on the X1i, the hardware cannot do it.
You can receive 1900MHz signals because the X1i is tri-band 900/1800/2100 (even though the drop down does not indicate so).
In future, please, for the love of god, use search!

I live in california, i also have the x1i, and i have sometimes seen the 3G for like two seconds too. From reading the threads i have noticed that in deed H is faster than 3G, and myself i get H the whole time while in my room but when i go to my friends house downtown i get a "full H reception signal" and oh man dat is even faster than my brothers HTC Fuze>

oh man, words can't even describe how fast full blown H is. i think i clocked it at 1mb/sec on a speedtest last week...makes my roommates iphone 3Gs look like a toy. i've always known it was faster than Edge and 3G, just wasn't sure about the 3G till now

Which is ironic since the iPhone 3GS is HSPA (7.2Mbps) capable...lol. HSPA is fast though. I regularly get between 1.5Mbps and 2.2Mbps here in Raleigh, NC.

So what is really preventing the Nexus One from running on AT&T? Did they just not "bother" to certify it with the FCC because T-Mobile is their launch partner?
This could mean then the radio software, or some other configuration option in the firmware simply has AT&T 3G disabled.
I'll let you guys debate this, but I can't see any hardware reason why this phone couldn't work on AT&T 3G, with proper software/hacking of course.

Actually the real question is, why didn't they certify with the FCC for AT&T 3G? My only idea is that T-Mobile was the launch partner, but the hardware can do AT&T 3G technically, it's just not certified and enabled.
No reason they couldn't certify and enable it later.
And I have to say, I would have no trouble going to T-Mobile, but in Salt Lake City, AT&T coverage is far superior and so are the 3G speed tests. There are many locations my T-Mobile friends can't get make calls to save their life. I hear T-Mobile is much better in other cities.

You've already answered your own question here, GSM is not UMTS.
I'm in the smae boat btw, Telstra in Aus use 850UMTS and I know how painful it can be to have 2G access in most places.

Well technically UMTS is a GSM standard, could be the same thing. Same frequencies certainly.
I was just checking the brochure for the http://www.rfmw.com/data/BRO254-08B.pdf
No where does it make mention of UMTS, like say... T-Mobile's AWS... but it does specifically have the correct frequencies listed for both T-Mobile AWS and AT&T 3G.
I'm going to make the assumption that this indicates it works with UMTS is both bands since it doesn't mention UMTS specifically at all, yet it does work on T-Mobile AWS.

I don't think it has to do with the FCC. Though we are all in love with the nexus one... remember that google and apple are nearly HALF of the same executive board. They don't want to compete with the golden goose that keeps thier stock portfolio's up that much.
We just need to find out how to activate/change which airwaves this thing is listening too and THEN we will have the first truely unlocked machine!

Well, maybe. The Blackstone has a hardware limitation for the US 3G frequencies. There have been phones in the past that had software limitations that were overcome with a hack. So if the Nexus has the hardware capabilities to do ATT 3G frequencies there is a good chance that someone will figure out how to unlock it.

I found this link to the Diamond on XDA which they supposedly change to 3g at&t but I have read the whole thing it's long.

I am running the latest KUMAR rom and i cannot seem to get 3G or Edge. I only get H which i never saw on the stock tmobile ROM. Is there a reason for this or am I doing something wrong. I performed a Hard Reset after flashing the Rom.

Right, but T-Mobile (US) only has HSPA rolled out right now. HSPA+ won't go until later this year from what I read. Overseas, it is probably HSPA+ given how Europe is always one-step-ahead in terms of the cell industry ('cept for the HD2, which T-Mobile US got the better version ).
High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is an enhanced 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, also coined 3.5G, 3G+ or turbo 3G, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. Current HSDPA deployments support down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.0 Mbit/s. I understand but, I am in las vegas,nv and there is no H available here as far as i know. It was showing 3G before the ROM was flashed, and no matter what rom i try i get H. I just want to be sure i am not getting a slower speed.

Same here and I am in Minnesota. I would guess it is just a bug in the ROM or something not working 100% correct. You can always verify your speeds by doing a download test. I did a speed test here when I saw the H and the latency and speed was no difference.
Hey guys, I stooped into my local store to show the Reps that I am getting HSPA and they were stunned and pulled up there technician map that shows where they are currently testing for different things and it did show that they are testing HSPA in a large portion of the country including my area. This is really good news because from what I was told my area just launched 3G in late December. I am hoping that everything goes as planned and they just flip the switch for good soon. If that is the case then the HD2 will be just as good as the Evo 4g. Sprint 4G is about the same as T-Mobile HSPA, and I am not gonna worry about an extra 3MP camera and 720P video. My HD2 takes amazing photos as it is and rally nice videos that look at least DVD quality if not better and I am not all that worried about the HDMI out.

Another thing to keep in mind is when a rom cook makes his rom its very easy to change the '3g/E' icon in the shellres to show an H.. its like me adding an 'L' icon instead of 'E/3G' and saying its on "LIGHTNING SPEED" get me ?
By default most custom roms are not set to use the 3g icon. This is MS's doing not the chefs. In Advanced Configuration Tool you can tell it to use the 3g icon by going to \Data Connections\HSDPA icon: and setting it to disabled. Alternatively you can change it with this reg:

I used this ROM too and was always on H. I'm speculating here but I don't think I was getting any faster speeds and since I saw the H constantly was thinking since he cooked this rom he edit it so it always shows on H.
Speculating nothing more.
i've noticed that when my phone is displaying H my speeds are insane.
For example I downloaded opera 10 with flash which is about 5-6mb's.
Under H the download meter is moving at a steady speedy rate.
When my phone drops to 3g i ca nsee the download speed decrease.
IF YOU SEE H MORE THEN 3G wow i envy you.
Only worry about seeing E. Capish?
I wondered about this when i first moved to android 2 years ago and i started noticing H I did a wikipedia search and that helped me clarify my doubt

where in dallas are you? i'm in dallas too(near north park mall),but only get 3g
I didn't think Seattle had HSPA yet (in fact, I read a newspaper article last week explicitely stating that we did not), but my phone switches between 3G and H periodically.
Well I still get 3G in some areas, H in others, and still get E when its there..so i guess this is a good thing

Guys, this has been happening for more than 2-3 years now. Both on ATT and TMOUS (after they switched to 3G).
I have seen H in TyTN/Kaiser/Touch Pro/Xperia before the HD2. But never noticed any diff in speed for better or worse.

I am running the latest KUMAR rom and i cannot seem to get 3G or Edge. I only get H which i never saw on the stock tmobile ROM. Is there a reason for this or am I doing something wrong. I performed a Hard Reset after flashing the Rom.

You get HSPA. T-Mobile branding removes H icon. It also happens on my T-Mobile TP2, "H" is back after flashed to CHT version.
I have the stock TMo US Rom. What reg edit can I use to enable the "H" icon? I really dislike that they went to the generic "3G" icon rather than E/3G/H. Thanks everyone.
Does anybody try this with HD2? This can "unhide" H icon.

International market is getting Atrix 3G, US is getting 4G. Is there any difference? As far as I know, both versions support HSPA+.

Largely terminology. If you mean HSPA+, then no, there's no difference. Someone has hinted that the Atrix will make it to other carriers. If it goes to Verizon, we could see a version that supports LTE. Then you'll have a difference. Until then, it's HSPA+ on various frequencies (assuming there will be a European version on a quirky frequency, and assuming it hits TMo).

There is no difference at all. In Europe they don't call HSPA+ 4G, so it's not called a 4G phone there.
It's kind of weird, it's probably because of some more restrictive laws outside the US where you can't call a cat a tiger (after all, HSPA+ is NOT 4G). Otherwise, they would surely market it the same way in Canada and Europe.

The idea of US carriers calling HSPA+ 4G is that it is delivering 4G speeds using upgraded 3G technology. 14.4Mbps HSPA+ with AT&T is nearly on par with the LTE speeds we will see on Verizon initially. T-Mobile is cranking their HSPA+ up to 42Mbps or something similar. It will be some time before carriers can really flex LTE muscle, but for now there really won't be that huge of a speed difference, so all these carriers calling their data tech 4G is just marketing.
Besides, LTE is NOT 4G either by definition. LTE is more of a 3.5G technology, similar to HSPA+, but the cool thing with LTE is that over time it can be upgraded to approximately 300Mbps theoretical download speed, while HSPA+ can only be upgraded to approximately 84Mbps download speed.
LTE Advanced will be the first technically compliant 4G technology on the market, but we are still years off from seeing that in the real world.
So take everything you see about 4G as a grain of salt. Atrix 4G vs Atrix is just marketing lingo.
And when people want to say that the Droid Bionic is a real 4G device would technically be incorrect. So don't think your Atrix is in any way inferior to the Bionic (except maybe camera and screen size).

It is now. Standards folks changed their minds, and as of last month or so current WiMax, current LTE, and HSPA+ are all 4G.
when i talked with my rep basically he said they were dropping the 4g just to make things easier. The phone is the same, just some people are still using the superfluous 4g tag.
Does this mean that we can buy a sim-free Atrix 4g from at&t, bring it to europe and use it with european sim cards?or any other gsm sim-cards around the world?

I'd really like to know that as well. Besides this the only thing preventing me from ordering an unlocked version as soon as such is available is the bootloader thing.

same here.thats why im considering galaxy s2 now. i have both moto milestone and galaxy s,the build quality of moto is way better.also my friends like the milestone build and look more,but the locked up bootloader really frustrated me.although there aren't much of great custom roms for galaxy s either,we haven't had a decent cyanogenmod rom around yet, after 8 month since galaxy s been released.
i like atrix more because of better build,higher resolution and tegra 2,but the damn bootloader and later release date along with slightly better specs for s2 like shipping with 2.3 and better camera is changing my desire.
not to mention that this time moto is using PenTile for it LCD and sami is using stripe matrix for its samoled+. thats another let down for atrix.
it was stupid from moto to change the lcd tech on atrix, stripe matrix looked great on milestone.

Just thought I'd correct you. Tmobile has claimed they can reach speeds of up to 672mbps with their HSPA+ tech. Honestly with speeds like that is there any real need for LTE?

This is basically LTE. They will be switching to it eventually, and these technologies is what makes up most of it.
Just to make sure everyone's aware. Without a huge picocell/femtocell underlay, you will never see anything over 6-12 meg on an LTE network.
The difference between atrix 4g and atrix for europe could be regarding frequencies: 4g shold be 3g on frequencies 850/1900/2100 while european version 850/900/1900/2100. This should be not a problem because almost in all europe 3g works on 2100 Mhz frequency. What do you think about it?

Since most 3G GSM operates in the 2100MHZ area nowadays, I don't this this is too much of a problem (if I'm wrong could someone please correct me?)
I'm now curious as to what exactly is the unlock procedure (sim-wise) of an att Atrix... Can anyone please explain (in detail) ?
