I use spare parts to turn off all window animations and transitions LOL..
when i click something, i want it now. don't wanna wait for the screen to "transition" .. that curtain effect would be cool for a day or 2 but I'd get sick of it after a while LOL..
that's just me though
In the same as daddymikey. I turn off all animations myself. It looks cool for a little bit bit it would get annoying

If this goes anywhere, it will be a last ditch effort to save RIM from the bowels of Mobility Hell. TAT was acquired by RIM December of last year. There UI ideas are very interesting concepts, but I doubt many of them would work on a day to day use device.
TAT Would have probably made a ton more money selling their launchers in the Market instead of selling out to a larger company. That and they probably won't have a job in 12 months when RIM tanks.

I give RIM longer than that - let's wait, first of all, on sales results of the PlayBook, which even Apple fanboys BGR admit is a good tablet, if not completely polished. It's a device that even I'd look at. And, making more money selling on the Market? Tenuous (edit: was right the first time, never mind) at best. I wouldn't trade a six-figure salary at one of the biggest smartphone makers in the world for peddling software in a market already taken over by the likes of LauncherPro. Remember, TAT doesn't just design silly little things like launchers - they work on the entire OS.
That is actually sick. I'm hoping the future of android sees some port of compiz fusion. I know the phones can handle it maybe not the full desktop cube with gears and stacked windows yet but many of the customizations seem realistic

I saw this last night, and I was like "Wow, that's cool, I'm sharing that." I for one have all screen animations on, cause I like things like: On Regina or Xperia Arc launcher, when you delete a shortcut or widget, it looks really cool.

It's neat to see on YouTube but I too don't like transitions that slow down my access to information. With the exception of the homescreens, mine are turned off.

That was my thinking.
Especially when my battery life drops from having to render a bunch of 3D animations while flipping around on my homescreen.
To each his own I suppose though.
Not only gimmicky, but stupid looking IMO. It's a prime example of over-doing it to the point where it's not even practical.

DO NOT GET THE EVO (if you already have a Nexus One)
I just got the EVO and it just does not compare to the Nexus one.
I rarely every open up new threads, but I just don't want to see anyone jump ship based off the "specs".
I have several smart phones. I've tried to dethrone my nexus one with: HD2, EVO 4G, iPhone 3GS (I'm about to run out of money lol). And none of which give you the experience the Nexus One does.
Biggest Issues:
The LCD screen makes the colors look washed out (blacks seem like grays, and reds seem pinker) compared to the N1 with it's AMOLED
Sense slows the device down noticeably (and you can't turn sense off don't believe the hype)
The N1 makes the EVO seem clunky: The EVO gets slightly thicker/fatter as it get near the camera
Pixel Density! The EVO and the N1 has the same amount of pixels but because the N1 screen is smaller things end up being more crisp! especially noticeable with live Wall papers!
You can't use default Android messaging, nor can you use default Android Contacts. HTC contact (IMHO) is really ugly, opinions aside its freaking slow!
Track Ball! Man! I did not know how useful that thing was until now! lol. It (to me) is the most efficient solution for selecting text, without fumbling around with directional pads on the virtual keyboard, especially annoying if you have something like Swype (swype is awesome btw, there's now way I'm doing away with that).
I'm sorry guys I don't mean to rant and I DON'T regret my purchase. I'm going to try and load froyo on there and see if that fixes most the issues, but HTC SHOULD have given us a way to shut off Sense!
I'll admit I have to do some more testing, but the N1 has the lead right now. I'll try really hard to get some videos and pictures up.
I have not doubt this great community that I've been a part of for years will address most of these issues but's it's going to be a bumpy ride
If anyone has these two devices, let me know how you feel.
Thanks for reading this.
Turn sense off by going to settings. Applications. Find htc sense and force close it... I saw it on a video or something. Yes sense can be shut off.

With froyo (no sense) it will be closer to the N1, only things I like about the evo is the screen size (not so much anymore) and the camera.

Its a good choice for someone who likes Sprint and I am glad that they finally got a highend superphone. It was long overdue for the poor people that Love Sprint service (its great in my area) but have had to suffer for crappy phones all these years.
That being said I can see ditching my Nexi and my Even More Plus plan to sign a contract for basically the same phone. Nexi takes the cake with its super fast updates.

I actually give the edge to the nexus one reason is: Number 1 and Number 4 in my post:
The LCD screen makes the colors look washed out (blacks seem like grays, and reds seem pinker) compared to the N1 with it's AMOLED
Pixel Density! The EVO and the N1 has the same amount of pixels but because the N1 screen is smaller things end up being more crisp! especially noticeable with live Wall papers!
I just hope someday that there will be a "mini usb to HDMI out" cord. I believe I said that right. I'd love to have the N1 appear on the tv screen. Anyway, I order my N1 this monday, I can't wait.
I had the desire before swapping + cash for a nexus one. Same thing there. each time u stopped the htc sense and cleared the defaults, the minute u press home, htc sense reloaded itself. The reason for not being able to stop sense is that htc actually removed the android launcher. all u have to do is install a launcher , go and stop the htc sense in settings-app-..... and then press home and select the launcher u installed.
or u can just install a launcher, and then install home switcher from market.

Just got me Evo, and I have Nexus one still. Well, I agree with OP when it comes to washed out colors, etc. BUT, that complaint can only be made if you have Nexus, this phone still blows everything else out of the water, aside from Nexus. I really liked HD2, minus the WinMo, so EVO really caught my eye lol.
I am still on T-Mobile, got Evo because I can still return and get out of contract with Sprint within 30 days... T-Mobile + Nexus = **** in my area... I get great 3G speeds (1.5mb down/400up) which is higher than what Sprint gets me, but it's so inconsistent. Constant 3g timeouts, takes ages to load pages because of it. Constant need to reboot due to texts not going out (tried all radios). Calls not coming through, list goes on. Having a great phone with all these issues is a killer to me, specially when I'd like to have data with me since I listen to Pandora in my car.
Anyways, this rant is mostly about Tmobile and Nexus combo, so for me the switch was justifiable, but phone to phone, I would still give the crown to Nexus.
I looked at the Evo in Best Buy today, the colors on screen are definitely lacking, as well as the pixel issue. Everything seemed stretched to it's limit.
I'm sticking with my N1, I love it to much.
I just went to the sprint store and played with the evo and was much more impressed then I thought I would be with its build quality. It felt very solid and I love the smooth back of the device. But I now 100% hate sense UI without a doubt. The phone was slower and laggy and this phone is brand new so its not bogged down yet.
damn, maybe i can convince my family to stick to current provider (ATT); we are planning on switching to Sprint because we can get 2x minutes, everyone (4 lines) gets data for about the same amount we are paying at ATT (iphone data only)
coverage isn't a issue since i'm in the dc/metro area
EDIT: never was a fan of Sense UI; had installed Paul's sense rom on my N1 and had to chance to normal android launcher; to me, sense has too much going on and i don't need all of that stuff
I can list ten things I like about the epic 4g but One thing I love in particular is the sound quality for music playback...the sound is so full and lively that it sounds as good or better that dedicated music players. For reference purposes I am using my shure e500pth headphones (which would definitely reveal sound processing flaws on phones with terrible dac converters such as the evo, i know because i had a evo and compared it to the epic and quickly switched to the epic). I also use poweramp (the paid version of course) due to its excellent eq and flexibility for shaping the sound to your liking). Let me know your favorite thing about the epic
Porn looks great on the Super AMOLED screen.
^^^ see, this guy knows whats up ^^^
A month later and it's still the display.. I still open it up all the time just to marvel at how black the blacks are..
watching movies, looking at pictures.. anything visual is made better because the display is just THAT awesome. I'm not really in the market for a TV yet, but whenever AMOLED screens start showing up in decent sized TV's at an affordable price, I'm all over that!!

And the good news is OLED technology is super-cheap to manufacture, benefits mightily of economies-of-scale.
So, after the first ones come out and the manufacturers/dealers finish raping the early-adopters for their entire life's savings, the prices will come down, WAY down, on nice, super-thin, lightweight, giant wall-mountable sets.
Imagine a 65" screen that you take anywhere with you, unroll, tape to the wall, plug the thin, flexible cable into the electronics box, and watch HD anywhere you go.
Yes, Homer, that day is just around the corner.

My favorite things is when im showing someone a pic or a vid the first thing they do is say "damn what is this a hd screen? what phone is this?" and then they turn the phone around and look at it from every angle haha.. never fails. samoled FTW
I agree with a lot of poeple and say the display.
Although its something that I have been used to for over a year
Considering my laptop has the $400 optional Dreamcolor display (16million colors vs desktop version 1billion colors)
But the deep blacks are amazing on the samoled.

I'm going to have to say its the 4g...It rocks and I'm so glad I'm in a 4g market both at home and 35 miles alway in Boston. I cancel my home internet and now only use my Epic with hotspot.
I have to say the screen too, Every time a girl looks at it with my aquarium live wallpaper, they love it. (Good Ice Breaker)
Everytime I see another display, i might as well rub sand in my eyes.
The fast CPU and the hard keyboard.
Edit: The so-called 4G dl speeds are phenomenal! I DL Trinity rom (132 Mb) file in about 8 minutes.
2 things...
Speed and apps. I overclocked my Pre but still not close to what the Epic can do. I still have 2.1 on my phone and will wait til the official 2.2.1 comes out to upgrade which will make it even faster.
Once again, come from the Pre which their catalog has 4700 apps to date, the app catalog for Android blows WebOS away.
I am on the outskirts of Denver so we don't have 4G available but it will be coming. All-in-all, I am very happy with my upgrade.
I bought the Nexus-S on Thursday it is my 3rd Android device, first was the MyTouch3G, and the EVO. I did have a iPhone3G back in the day.
My siblings were over for a Christmas party last night, and my brother and sister both own the iPhopne4, and boy does that OS look and feel dated.
I keep reading how awesome the iPhone 4 is, supposed to be the #1 best smartphone on the market ? I will agree, the look and design of the phone itself is very nice, and feels very solid well put together. But the OS just seems so 3 years ago, with just a screen full of app icons, and no notifications, no widgets, and a small 3.5" just not doing it for me. I think my Nexus-S is a much better product, the live wallpapers might be a gimmick, but I love my starfield one, looks very StarTrek cool. Plus the Super AMOLED screen is so much nicer than the retina display.
I am not bashing Apple, I would possibly buy an iPhone 5, if they make a larger screen, and must add in widgets and a notification system.
One last beef, is the middle thumb button on the iPhone, oh my God, that has to go. I think I would throw the phone against the wall if that's the only button to press. Where is the menu button, and back button ? Just having a home button would be annoying.

To each, his own my good man, but I am definitely with you there... Like looking back (to five days ago) I don't know what I was thinking haha. iPhone 4 is terrible, I don't ever want to buy another Apple phone, but I somehow always do... Hopefully I'll break the tradition in '11.
The OS may feel "dated" but it is much more polished than Android is.
And that's coming from an iPhone user for the past 2+ years who just made the switch to Android with Nexus S.
Welcome to android. All that was true even a year ago with the nexus one. Android OS is just so much more interesting and useful and functional than iOS. It's not even close.
But apple OS does look more polished for some things. To me personally I don't see a huge difference though.

Well, this isn't my first Android device. I was an early adopter with the G1 when it first came out, but ditched it after 6 months or so.
That said, the major area where iOS beats Android is the lack of pop up menus. The flow in iOS is very nice and intuitive. Keyboard is also better plus things like copy and paste, scrolling in the browser etc. App quality and selection is still superior on iOS.
Give Android one, at best two more years, and Apple will piss into its pants.
Thought the same thing ... screen looks tiny and. Os feels out dated... and I have a vibrant..
I do agree the iphones features are very well put together and polished but. It gets boring it super difficult to customize.. also sucks how every single app has to have a back button.. also u can only have 3g only on att Wich sucks cuz att sucks! Just to put it plain and simple the iphone is well made but its boring ... alot of. More fun with android especially playing with ur home screen
The only thing i miss is the ability to take a screenshot w/o a 3rd party app. haha
There are two things iphone/ipod/ipad never has:
ogg vorbis support (much better fidelity than mp3)
adobe flash
The screen on NS is simply the best
color: NS>MT4>nexus one
contrast: NS>nexus one (both have unlimited contrast)>MT4
I also found antenna jack uncovered on NS, so you can plug external antenna when driving to get much more constant reception.
In addition, micro/miniUSB data/charging jack is much more common on smartphones now.
Im just glad people are starting to notice how Android is ahead of iOS even at its early stages..oh BTW I LOVE NEXUS S! Coming from N1

I would agree with you prior to the Nexus S....but this new Google phone is every bit as good and polished as the iphone 4 IMO.
Some general questions about ios vs android?
1)We are all saying that android is open source and ios is not...why then all the great hackers like Musclenerd, Saurik and Geohot are interested more in iphone?....which hach scene is larger?
2)Why android manufactors dont build a direct iphone killer device which also has the same top build quality and design with iphone?
3)Ok i dont like ios cause of its simplicity...but generally it is a lot user friendly.... android as rubin said is getting day by day better in tha area....but when you touch even the old iphone 3gs the smoothness of scrolling is sth unmatched by any high end android device i have used in 2010....like galaxy s with lagfix or Desire HD.....i mean the response and smooth scrolling is amazing. It feels so natural.
iPhone is cool too, unlike Nexus S, people actually put their thought in to it. Of course pure google with android is better then ios
iPhone4 owner who just bought a Nexus S here.
I am more productive on the iPhone.
Can't search through my Exchange mailbox (email app) on the Nexus? WHAT?
Can't subscribe to more than one folder in the email app?
(FYI: email app needed to connect via activesync to my corp mail server - K9 doesn't work either. GMail app is great...but since I have to use 2 different email apps, that means no unified inbox).
The Android facebook app is absolute *crap* (can't even tag people in photos, lame).
Evernote/Mint/etc look much better on the iPhone.
iPhone's battery life is SO much better than the Nexus S (anandtech's review showed you can browse the web for *twice* as long on the iPhone)
AT&Ts 3G is much better...
The iPhone's notification (screen on + pop-up) works great for me... can't even get Tasker to turn on the screen when a notification is received with Gingerbread.
There are obviously things I love about Android.. but I don't know which one I'll keep at this point.

I disagree with most of your reasoning and anandtech's review was biased, just another iPhone fan boy reviewing an Android phone? c'mon now.... Esp the battery life he claims it identical to Nexus One? He must have a defect because the battery life is a HUGE improvement and there are many forums to prove this. And speaking of notification, Android BROUGHT notification to the game. There's more than just a pop up screen that we could use. I understand maybe for the Nexus S yea it doesnt have LED but I actually think No Led is clean and unique.

I thought that the reason the Nexus S didn't have Gorilla Glass was because it was curved. The concept was really amazing. I liked the obvious 3 screens, but being able to change the color of the lights at the edge, being able to swipe between screens, and being able to swipe between phones was pretty impressive.
I was also impressed with the video. It had a good message, plus, it looked like a real phone, I wouldn't be surprised if someone took this and thought it was an actual device.
Agreed, I really like it. Not too sure about the shape but it seems to work in a very functional and practical way.

I have a friend that has one and we traded phones for a couple hours last night. Here's my mini review/reason I'm getting it. First the kickstand. I know alot of people hate the kickstand placement because it places the charging port and hdmi port down. Surprisingly unlike the evo the kickstand clicks in place which makes it possible for you to flip the phone upside down with the kickstand basically flat. This allows you to charge the phone while also watching Netflix with the kickstand propping the phone up. If your brave you can also have the phone in portrait with the kickstand open but the phone rocks if you touch it though I think it would take alot to make it fall over.
My epic barely gets one 3g bar in my dorm room his photon however has 3 or 4 which means alot lol because when I go outside its full. 4G on the other hand demolished my epic doing 10mb whereas my epic did 5 or 6 on a good day. Call quality is something I've never really been able to gauge I called a couple landlines and cellphones with no issues besides that I had to turn the volume down which is agood thing. Speakerphone was clearer then my epic it didn't sound distorted as usual when I try to use it and wasn't as obvious.
Now to the more important stuff the software. To each his own but Motoblur is 10x better than Touchwiz and nothing close to the Motoblur of old. The widgets aren't flashy on the outside almost as if their trying to conserve battery but I like them especially the messaging widget. I don't see myself using handcent anymore because it allows you to have all your messaging in an universal App which is wonderful for me because I'm always on twitter and facebook. The music app is good also especially for people who buy music from amazon. The social widgets I didn't really get into because well it wasn't my phone lol. Most importantly people say the phone lags switching from screen to screen and honestly I think it's the frame rate of Motoblur because I installed Go Launcher, ADW, LP, and Zeam(favorite) and they flew I mean fastest i've seen on any phone even the 3vo and to be sure I loaded them all 7 screens with widgets and transitions.
I only had the phone for 4 hours but the battery life was good only used 20% doing all the stuff I've spoken of above. However, he came looking for my charger and my phone was fully charged when he got it lol. Now for a few tidbits the camera is great I didn't see this bluish tint people speak of or the pixelation maybe I wasn't looking hard enough or don't have a keen enough eye. After the system used its necessity after a clean boot there was about 700mb of ram for use which is well self explanatory. Apps open instantly, bluetooth connects perfectly quicker than my epic, and wifi had no hiccups, and I've talked about 4G already but I'm starting to get hungry any questions ask personally I plan on buying one but who knows may still end up with a within when it comes out.

Yes, it a blur problem. The "Blur" on the Droid 2 R2D2 is exactly the same in that it lags, which makes the phone seem slow. As soon as I put LP on it(it was my cousins) it was pretty smooth.

Just wait for the Samsung Within
Photon 4g is a great phone.. However i think i could do without the kickstand if it was alitlle slimmer.
Im pretty sure its thicker than most galaxy s phone (not to mention gs2)

I'm happy with the Epic lol. XD

Thanks for the review. Keep us updated.
I'm happy with my Epic too, but I'd be happier with +20dB more signal that I might get with the Photon. I tested that today at a Sprint store...
There is also the dock for your TV which works great. I have not yet seen if the actual dock is required for the app to work or if a straight cable can be used from phone to TV...
There is also an app to share files from computer to the phone over 3/4g or wifi (supposedly). The review sites have all been full of **** and half assed reviews and I have only seen a single mention of this feature, no details whatsoever.
The UI does lag and it did look great when I used both GO and ADW on the store demo..
I also changed the theme to a couple different styles and all looked great.
I noticed no discoloring on the camera pictures and the screen looks real good on color duplication. My Epic side by side has a greenish tint, while the Photon looked as though it might have had a warmer (red) tint, still accurate colors though..
The sound from the speaker sounded a bit clearer from my Epic while playing Electronic and Classic Rock.
I did not try calls or texts or anything like that but yall can see other reviewers for that info. Overall quality of calls seems good.
I removed several apps that looked like they were bloatware...
I will find out for sure when I go to another store to play for an hour or so...
Edit:
The camera has very few options. I like the panorama option on my Epic, even though it is low resolution. There just didnt seem to be many customizations or settings to tinker with, but I might have just missed them in my limited time... I would love to confirm if the camera sound can be killed...
got the photon today, played with it for few hours, everything is very good, but the screen is terrible. really bad. its going back to sprint tomorrow. will wait for the within

what is it about the screen that was horrible ?
asking because I'm on the fence about getting the photon.. I managed to get an early upgrade (full upgrade) 2 wks before my 12 month anniversary and I was playing w/ one and it seemed ok.. just wasn't impressed w/ the screen too well..
can you offer a review of the screen ?
Thanks
The screen is not horrible at all. In fact it is actually pretty awesome. The Super AMOLED screens are just an over saturated display that kill your battery like crazy. The Photon's display is impressive plus it has the best battery life for a smartphone ever.
Look at Engadget's review. Their positive is the screen!

I second this. Very much like the display.
Battery life is superb. 1 day 3 hours of moderate to heavy usage and I still had 13% left.
Panoramic mode for the camera is under menu then picture modes.
Pixel count is 540 x 960
And the option to connect to your tv without the **** and just a cable is there but you need to be rooted.
The bootloader is also unlocked already. And root access of available without dock now.
If you have the chance I say upgrade and test it for a week or 2 then decide for your self. I think I may be keeping it.
