Store Review
I purchased my EVO from a Corporate Sprint store in Sumter, SC. I arrived at 6:10-6:15am to find I was the first to arrive. Around 7am the sales rep took note of who were the first to arrive to serve those people first. As the Sprint employees arrived they all greeted the customers as they went inside. Around 7:45am the doors opened and I was the first customer to be served. The sales rep was prompt yet polite. He was generous enough to provide me with prices for the accessories. I purchased a gel cover and screen protector. I was out the door in about 15 minutes if that. He even offered donuts to those that were waiting in line. My overall score for this store is 10.
Phone Review
Coming from the HTC Hero, this phone is amazing. Compared to the Hero it's a runaway freight train.
Platform
The phone uses the full version of Android 2.1 w/ HTC Sense unlike the Hero which utilizes a striped version of 2.1 w/ HTC Sense. The platform is very smooth and stable even with Sense UI. I believe it has to be 1 GHz processor helping it out. The live wallpaper is a touch of elegance. It's a little disappointing that they didn't change the standard lock screen.
Processor
The apps open a lot faster and are a lot more stable. Very minimal lag but compared to the Hero it simply feels like there isn't. The browser opens quicker and pages load fast. The most complained problem of the Hero was the landscape keyboard lag. On the EVO, it feels like it disappears. The keyboard seems smooth and responsive even with haptic feedback on. The phone dailer is even smooth. The Hero also had/has bad ringer lag. I tested this on the EVO and amazingly it rang on the first ring. Downloading apps and music even watching SprintTV is amazing. I don't have 4G in my area yet and it's still unknown. I just know with 3G service this phone does things my Hero has never done.
Camera/Video
The camera is simple yet nice. This thing takes great pictures. The flash adds extra value to this phone. I have yet taken video with it but I've heard that it takes great videos too.
Screen
The screen is nice and big. It's amoled screen is nice and bright inside. In direct sunlight, the screen is hard to see but it's visible. The big 4.3" screen shows video extremely clear. The extra space allows navigating on the screen easy. It also allows texting quick and accurate. Texting on the screen is easy in both landscape and portrait mode. I did most of my texting in portrait mode on my Hero due to the terrible lag in landscape.
Hardware
What can I say, this phone is huge compared to most phones on the market. It fills my 12 year old daughter's entire hand. It has a sturdy and well built feel to it. It has a 1.3mp camera on the front and 8mp camera on the back. The kickstand is a nice touch if you are a video watcher. The construction of the EVO is of metal and heavy duty plastic. It has a 1500 maH battery which is red along with the entire back. Underneath it comes preloaded with an 8 gb sd card which upgradeable to 32 gb. Overall the EVO feels like it will last a long time as long as it is well kept.
Sound
The EVO is loud. Listening to music and movies is nice and clear. The ringer is loud enough to be heard across the room. The sound quality of calls is good too.
Battery
As we know, the Hero had poor battery life on launch date. With the update to 2.1, The battery life has improved drastically. On the EVO, the battery life tends to drain quickly with heavy usage. Even with the same battery as the Hero, the EVO just has too small of a battery. The phone has a lot going on at one time including live wallpaper for those that have that turned on. Maybe in future updates including Android 2.2, the EVO will be able to manage power more efficiently. We'll just have to wait and see.
Overall the phone is worth every bit of money that you will/have invested in. This is only a review from the few hours of me playing with the phone. Looking forward to see what everyone has to say. I give this phone a 10 of 10 compared to my Hero.
Gotta get use to not having crisp colors as on my moment =[ man its an eyesore
All I need to say is I'm glad I bought extra batteries! It's actually a little hard to see the screen on my hero now

question
Is the screen like the iphone, meaning its crystal and scratch proof? [Not entirely sure if the iphone is even scratch proof.]
But thanks in-reply.

Unless I am mistaken and they changed the specs before launch, the evo does not have an amoled screen. Its an LCD. Please correct me if I missed something before launch.
I really don't know if the screen is scratch proof. The sales rep at the Sprint Store urged everyone to buy a screen protector which was $9.97 - 25% if you are a Sprint Premier customer.

Hmmm, I didn't know that. I have to look more into it.
You stand corrected. It is a 4.3" WVGA resolution Capacitive Multi-touch screen according to HTC.

I'm from n1 as well, and I wouldn't dare call the 4.3" fugly lol...anyhow some people are harder to please. One of my initial VERY positive responses compared to the N1 is the speaker quality. Sounds much less tinny..very welcome. I'd probably prefer this than the inky blacks of amoled.

i'm with you on this one. i had to sit there and look at my pretty N1, with my newly purchased evo in my hand and wonder if i made the right decision...
but, it's done and over with. sold the nexus 4 hours after having bought the evo. no going back now.
i wish root access here was like it was on the N1 :/
Store Review
got mine from radio shack, i was first in line at 4:45am (a non preorder guy), and they were cool as it was first come first serve for the non-preorders. all other radio shacks i called said not to even come as they wouldn't have any extra units to sell, so mad props to this store.
Phone Review
i was using an at&t tilt for the last 2-3 years that has had multiple 6.1 and 6.5 roms which i also have android on my sdcard. The evo compared to the tilt blows it away..
Platform
everything at the moment is pretty snappy and smooth. i did have a few glitches earlier that pop on the screen as errors for service and found out that i actually had to make a call to activate the service even though i was using the data part for the last 12hours.
Processor
fast, everything opens and closes like butter, no issues other than me not touching the screen properly for certain buttons. no lags on fastforwarding on movies and i found that the movies i just riped to the large iphone landscape are awesome while the smaller res are cool but not a wow factor
Camera/Video
alot better, but as others have said, the pictures look awesome on the phone but when you view them from a pc its a different storey... no difference there from the tilt or evo
Screen
phat! this is one the reason why i bought so i can ditch my ipod classic and watch movies as well as bigger landscape for normal stuff. the downside is the fingerprints on the screen blah! i installed nitrodesk touchdown to synch up my emails with the exchange owa server that has activesync turned off and reading emails is real nice.
Hardware
very big but waay lighter than the tilt, i wished they would have put the sdcard in a different place and google make it easier for file synching.
Sound
pretty good, haven't really tested it yet.
Battery
no complaints yet, it runs down but i use the heck out of my phone and have to keep them on chargers or risk being with a low battery during my commute or while out. I ride a sportbike so no, no cigarette lighter to charge and yes they have them but no i ride a supersport not a cruiser or dual purpose bike.
data
cant do voice and data at the sametime killed me, as i was on a conference call and needed to get the number of miles to augusta, ga with no luck as 4g was not found and i wasn't near a wifi area. the ability to do data/voice at the sametime is a must for me for work and home life especially. i use this feature atleast twice a day on my at&t tilt when on a conference call and tried to get a new/read a new email or talking to my wife on the phone and doing something for her.
I also had a no coverage for certain parts of the atlanta zoo while my at&t tilt atleast had edge coverage. i expect to see both devices do this in certain areas, i just hope sprints coverage is not terribly bad for where i travel around.
i have not tested the hotspot, internet sharing or any of those features yet, but its on the todo list.
i did lower my plan to the $69 450m from the $99 simply everything i originally signed up for in the store during new service activation.
so far after 18+ hours, this phone is sweet i managed to fill up the 8gb sd card already putting movies and podcasts on it (go tiesto!). so i definately need a 16gb or 32gb sd card as just pulling one out and sliding in another is not an option on this phone. i am doing the sprint 30 day guarantee so i have 29 days left to figure out if coverage, service and the phone is worth me moving from at&t.

thats only if your exchange server does not have activesync or outlook mobile disabled, ours do since they try and force all users to use blackberries.

So the day before release i decided to call around for a store. Best Buy 2 people said completely different things, we have 20 extras, we have no extras. 1 RadioShack said, come in and i will give you a preorder! that's the day before, and that was to good to be true. Caled one more RadioShack, they had extras and would hold one for me. (really my girl, because she is account holder) So she called before they close and a girl answered, my girl told an employee her name, and he said i yeah we have your phone set aside for tomorrow come in at 10am to get it. She said as soon as she they got there (around 10:08am) they said hey are you _________, went to the back and came out with the box. Sold her the phone.
NOW the phone is excellent, i have purchased EVERY new phone that was supposed to be excellent, except droid and incredible. This is the number 1, Nexus a close second. (if it wasn't allways hot, maybe first.) I can see the scree outside decently well. better than the Nexus in direct sunlight. I donwloaded some files for test of speed, and it downloaded faster than my pre, nexus one, fuze and my buddy's storm. (Note: all are the 4 major carriers. No 4g coverage in Cincinnati, OH) Screen is over whelming, but I like that ALOT! I could do with out Sense, but it's not bad. Calls are clear and loud enough to hear them. Video recording is better than any phone i have owned or played with, and I play with them all. Overall, satisfied more than i thought I would be. I usually change phones every 3 to 4 months, but this one will stay.
I picked up my phone at Best Buy in King of Prussia, PA. I was half hour early for my appointment, they were still helping other buyers and I ended up waiting until my scheduled time. (which is a good thing IMO, right on schedule - I didn't mind the extra time to look at accessories)
I give them an 8. They were playing some promo video on an lcd tv screen, and it seems the video would have been better played on an Evo. very bad quality!
Phone
I'm loving this bad boy!, every time I look at it, I think to myself "that's a huge *****!" I wish I could make the fonts smaller and put more icons across, but it's not a big deal to me right now, that's a whole other os thing.
The one negative thing for now is not really bad, I just might have to get used to it. The bezel is so small, and the phone so big, so when I grab the phone to put it down without turning it off first, the tip of my fingers usually makes some selections on the screen and starts programs unintentionally.
I am up for an upgrade in a week and have been weighing my options for a while and am currently leaning towards the Epic, but was hoping to get some insight from the Epic community and hopefully some people that have used both phones. My main concern with the Epic is that of Sammy and their history of not supporting hardware. I still have a bad taste in my mouth over the Instinct(great hardware, terrible software and support). I don't care that much about the home screen part of either or the mail app as I will be using GMail and LauncherPro. One question I have is how many serious and talented linux devs are there that work on the Epic? I know most of the Hero devs went to the Evo. I currently have a Hero running CM6. I like some parts of Sense, but it's performance was a major turn-off and was what made me turn to ASOP. As far as the keyboard goes, I am undecided on whether I will actually like/use it or not. The only thing I see myself using it for is gaming emulators. Another concern is I have heard something about GPS issues, have they been fixed or acknowledged? I am open to input and am truly on the border here. Also, has a root been found for the epic yet? This is a big one for me so that I can at least remove the sprint crapware.
I would say go for the evo. Not long ago I was in the same boat a you. I did a ton off research, and played with both phones extensively. I chose the evo, and it its the most amazing phone I've ever seen. Now that htc uncapped the fps, there is really no problems. The epic is great, but imo the evo is better.
Sent from my Htc Evo
I own both. I prefer the Epic for the keyboard. However, I dislike its screen for late night bed surfing lol. All AMOLEDs are way too bright in the dark.
Couple other noticeable things for me:
Screen: Epic for brightness/colors, however EVO has better responsiveness (assuming hardware/software issue for Epic)
Screen FPS: Epic, but they just released official fix for EVO
Text input: Epic since it has hardware keyboard in addition to touch
Battery life: EVO hands down, my Epic seems to die too fast and I never used any type of battery saving application on EVO
Power button location: Blows on Epic, why did they put it on the side??
Phone Size: Epic is lighter and smaller
ROM Development: EVO because its a HTC device, but I hope this changes soon
And I'd go with the Epic. I got my girlfriend her first smartphone 3 months ago and got her the Evo. Played with it for a few weeks and definitely liked the phone. Then I came up for an upgrade and I had the same decision to make. I ended up chosing the Epic as it seems it is a fewer months older and has a few slight upgrades over the Evo, but not much.
The Epic screen is ridiculously amazing. They do NOT compare. I love having a hard keyboard, and I text a lot more because of it. It's been two phones and about 3 years since I had a keyboard, but I picked it right up and my fingers flew.
Touchwiz is very nice, but I got rid of it after a few days, well actually the 3rd day once I rooted. I did the same with Sense on my Hero, like it, but I rather go completely customizable with a custom launcher.
Another great thing about the Epic is the notificatoin settings bar. You can adjust a few settings like wifi, 4g, bluetooth, brightness and airplane mode all from the pull down bar. And it even works without Touchwiz, which was a surprise to me. This feature alone gives me a big vote for epic over evo.
It seems the Epic's cpu runs a little faster/more efficientyly than the Evo's. The battery life on both is about what you can expect, if you use it a lot, plan on charging it during the day. Are you into rooting and getting the most out of your phone? Then you can get extensively better battery duration.
Right now, there isn't a lot of extra stuff you can do on a rooted Epic, but the phone's only been out a few weeks and the Evo has a jumpstart on developmental stuff. Also, the Evo is already on 2.2 where the Epic is still on 2.1, although rumors have it getting 2.2 in the next month.
Gps issue is definitely a problem on the Epic. I use my GPS about 5 times a day as I travel to different sites for my job. There is a delay in getting a good lock, but there should be a fix for this soon, and it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I usually get a lock within a minute. But I'll be happy when I get that instantaneous lock again.
One thing the Evo definitely has on the Epic is a bit bigger screen, .3", and HDMI out. That function is disabled on the Epic for some reason. I've heard a few reasons, but who knows. I use the DLNA option instead as my TV is new enough to support it.
I came from 3 generations of HTC phones before this, so it was hard for me to leave HTC. In the end, either way you're getting an awesome phone. so good luck with this decision!
epic camera owns the evo. period
I own both and would say EVO hands down. I thought the physical keyboard would be for me as that was the hardest to get used to on my EVO but after using both extensively I'd get the EVO. Where a few people like being able to adjust wifi/bluetooth and whatnot from the upper status pulldown, on the EVO it's a widget called "Power Control". To me this gives the same ease. Having both the EVO and the EPIC side by side I wouldn't say the EPIC screen blows away the EVO. Colors seem more blue on the EPIC and amoled is nice but I'd take my EVO any day for the .3 larger screen + it doesn't look bad at all.
Now if you're HEAVY into games and that's the main purpose for your phone then I'd recommend you get the EPIC. GPS isn't as big of an issue as people make it out to be BUT that being said there's been a few times when I needed it *now* and was waiting for about 3-5 minutes which I am sorry is NOT cool. The EVO locks on almost instantly, and most places I have tried indoor as well (obviously in a concrete office building it's not going to work... but at home in my bedroom it works fine).
I would suggest that you go to a Sprint store and really play with both for ~20 minutes each...

Yes it is.
Having owned, and done extensive reviews and research on both I can conclude that the Epic's camera is much better than the Evos. The saturation, contrast, and white balance are all superior. Not to mention the video camera is only bested by the iPhone4.
I owned the Evo b4 the Epic. I liked the Evo, because the development for the device is amazing. The kickstand on the Evo is also great and comes in handy. Now that the 30fps caps is removed, it is even a greater phone.
I chose the Epic for a smaller form factor in phone size. I had to use two hands to use the Evo and my fingers would not reach across the screen without touching my skin. The Evo camera is not as good as the Epic, 23 fps vs 29/30fps at a constant rate. I like have an option of a physical keyboard to use only *if* I am typing a long email, playing a emulator or just getting tired of using the on screen keyboard. The AMOLED screen pwns the LCD screen and the Epics GPU is amazing, I run everything smoothly on my Epic.
In my opinion they are both great phones, but if you prefer a bigger form factor and a great development scene go for the Evo. If you prefer a great overall device that has everything built in for a phone then choose the Epic.

The EVO can't shoot HD video in low light situations. It goes at around 10-15 FPS. It's blurrier during the day. It over saturates the colors. The 8MP on the camera is totally pointless because the quality of the camera doesn't measure up.
My Epic takes much better pictures than my EVO. But regardless... there are far MORE IMPORTANT reasons to get a phone.

Apparently you haven't used cm6 on the EVO. IT does wonders for the camera and does things that no other camera app does as of yet; touch to focus while in camcorder mode....I get 24ish fps in 720p in low light with cm6.
Look, I own both, they both have their pros/cons but NEVER ever would I say one owns the other. It almost like Mac vs. PC they both do some things well....and others not so well.
Epic, is my vote, root is already out. Out of the box, epic is so much better. I still have my evo, but I never pick it up.

My pick is the Evo. I got the Epic at launch, but it never felt right for me. I was also annoyed at the current bugs, which I can confirm it has. I just didn't have faith in Samsung to come out with a fix for them all, especially in my 30 window.
I returned it for the Evo and was amazed how much more I liked the Evo. Just feels like the better phone imo. Battery life is much better on the Evo than the Epic for me too.
Good luck.

Either one you pick you wil be happy. I ended up going with the epic for the better screen, better processor and gpu and the keyboard. Even though im starting to use the screen keyboard alot more now that i installed the droid x keyboard.. i take the train to work everyday so i watch movies and play games on a daily basis.. and despite the screen size disadvantage the epic has.. movies look so much better.. and believe me i've tried both

Agreed! They are both good machines(?), err phones. As I said in an earlier post, it'd be stupid to not go to Sprint and really play with both for like 10-20 minutes each. Download quadrant, neocore, your favorite app(s), etc., etc. and run it all on both and make an informed decision. Most Sprint employees (around were I live) recommend the EVO, that said, don't let a sales person sway you one way or another.

I plan on it. I have been to best buy twice, but for some reason in their great wisdom they only have mockups so you cant play around with them. I am going to buy it at best buy so I get my reward points and better returns.
I have both, bought Evo, really liked it, but when the Epic came out, tried it, loved it, gave Evo to hubby.
Handsize and feel is important to me, the Epic fits hand better, buttons are in more convenient place for one hand usage, Love Swype, love screen, rooted but staying with Touchwiz because its so smooth (and waiting for 2.2
before I mess with other roms). The pics are awesome, as are some of the apps, especially Google Sky. It actually runs a little faster than Evo in opening apps.
Now hubby loves Evo, bigger feel in hands, screen, but to me, colors look more washed out. However, he is color blind so can tell no difference.
I came from rooted Hero, so like Touchwiz better than Sense. Its a comfort zone, they are both great, play with them, if we didn't have two to chose from, everyone would like the one choice they have.
P.S. My only wish would be no keyboard on Epic and thinner, never use it with large on screen keyboards and Swype.
I'm due for an upgrade at the end of July. I cannot decide whether to go for the Atrix or the Infuse. They're just about dead even for me.
Atrix Pros:
-Dual Core CPU
-GeForce GPU
-Fingerprint Scanner
-Motoblur > Touchwiz 3 (IMO) (of course I'd do LauncherPro/ADW, but still)
-qHD Resolution
Infuse Pros:
-GORGEOUS Super AMOLED Plus screen (I am pretty much in love with AMOLED)
-0.5 extra inches of screen real estate
-HSUPA isn't disabled
-Sideloading isn't disabled (but I'd probably root and lagfix anyway)
-I have huge hands
Basically, the Atrix has more horsepower, but the Infuse has more eye candy and network speed. I'm not sure which is the better trade-off. I'm a power user for sure, but I just can't get over AMOLED. Does anyone care to sway me one way or the other?
Of course, if the US gets the Galaxy S II by July then this is irrelevant.
Sorry if this has been posted a bagillion and five times.
US is getting galaxy sII in July so there's no point
Anyway to answer you before this gets locked, I say get the atrix. The resolution upgrade is awesome. Not only that but when we get custom roms, this beast will finally be freed.
But if you love the SAMOLED then just get the infuse. In everyday usage I doubt you'll notice the difference.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Well.... i went from an iPhone 4 to an Atrix... and i absolutely love it. I keep thinking about swinging by an AT&T store to check out the Infuse.... but i doubt it'd be tempting to me.
Reasons i like the Atrix:
1) the already mentioned dual-core... which i'm pretty sure will be a requirement in some Android versions... and a little bit of future-proofing never hurt anybody
2) 1GB RAM.... which i don't think many other phones have.... if any, really. (other than the SGS2)
3) fingerprint reader. Yes, it can be finicky at times, but at least your phone can't be cracked into by, say, figuring out a pattern that the oils of your skin have nicely smudged across your screen for you.
4) the also mentioned NVidia chipset. I don't do a lot of gaming on my phone... but hey.... just a little more future-proofing i guess.
Things i'm not sure of with the Infuse:
1) Super AMOLED. I know... they're quite nice screens.... but i also hear the colors are extremely vivid... which might not necessarily be the greatest thing.
2) screen size. Yes, it's only another half inch... and yes, we may have large hands... but pocketability is my concern. An extra half inch can do wonders to a pocket.
Two things i'd like to correct in your Pros/Cons... HSUPA has been enabled for the Atrix (and reviews of the Infuse i've seen don't really show much difference from what many still see with the Atrix. Sometimes nice speeds.... sometimes sh*t speeds), and supposedly sideloading could be allowed by AT&T in the near future.
The Galaxy S2 might be worthwhile... but i dunno. Would have been nice had they gone with the NVidia chipset... but maybe they figured it would generate too much heat for an extremely thin phone? Not saying the Atrix is a beast size-wise... but i'm pretty sure it's thicker than the SGS2.
Futureproofing is something I didn't really think of. The Dual-Core, though zippy now, has even more room to grow with Gingerbread updates. And considering Samsung's track record with updates, the Atrix will go a lot farther.
The Atrix probably will be my choice unless the screen difference is just that huge.
And I sure do hope the GS2 comes in July.
yea... a friend of mine has the original Motorola Droid on Verizon. He thought about getting the Thunderbolt, but figured it didn't make sense to upgrade to another single-core phone when dual-core phones on Verizon are just around the bend.
And like i said... not entirely sure about the screen, since i haven't actually taken the time to look at a Super AMOLED screen, let alone both side-by-side.... but i quite like the Atrix's screen, even though it is a pentile matrix screen.... mostly because the downside to pentile matrix is only really that noticable if you frequently use 100% brightness or are constantly an inch or a few from your phone's screen.
Your posting in the atrix forum...what answer do you expect

I have been using Atrix for a while now, have to say that even with a huge battery the back up is not great. Bootloader is locked which means no custom goodies. Finger print reader is buggy and slow and irritating. You can not turn off 4g, which takes a lot of battery. Can not turn off haptic feedback etc etc etc .

Wow.... who'd have seen that coming. Another person complaining about the bootloader. Haven't really noticed any issues with the fingerprint reader either, other than when i try to swipe too fast and it doesn't quite get a good read... which is kinda expected. And i may be mistaken.... but can't you turn off 4g/HSPA+ by just choosing a different APN in the mobile network settings? Such as to AT&T US instead of the default AT&T US HSDPA?
eallan: how you figure? I didn't even really know wtf people were complaining about with pentile matrix displays til i actually turned the brightness up to 100% on my Atrix, and even then it's not really a "Hey, that shouldn't be like that" moment.
Extra real estate should be a con lol

I am also unsure as to which one to go with. I am still using a sammy omnia II and was wondering if the new screen on the infuse is better in the sun than the older omnia II also which is better in the bright sun the atrix or infuse that. Also works betted as a phone, the atrix or infuse??

Yeah another person. Maybe Motorola should take a hint. Its is big fat CON of the device.
All you have to look at to see the pentile is any color straight line. Especially green. The fact that its a rgbw layout instead of a rgbg layout makes text on white look much better though.

I took the time to mess with the Infuse today. Can't really vouch for the whole visibility in direct sunlight bit.... but i will say two things about it. It is nice... but i still don't like the way it looks. Pentile may not be the greatest display.... but neither is a fantastic Super AMOLED+ with extremely vivid colors. I was looking at both the Infuse and Atrix side by side... trying to get a comparison of the color quality.... and to be honest i prefer the Atrix's. Yeah, it may not be quite top-notch... but i'd rather have slightly less fantastic than over-the-top vivid. Tried to compare the icons... but couldn't. For one, Samsung uses their own custom ones.... and two, what you'd expect to be a decent red would be like a fire engine red. What you'd expect to be a nice mellow blue tone looks like cobalt blue. Think they need to stray away from Xbox-ification. Upping the shinyness doesn't always make something better.
Other than that, it actually seemed to be fairly laggy just pacing back and forth through the default home screens that were on the one at my local AT&T. And i don't mean the "laggy" that people say the Atrix is (which i fail to see).... i mean like you'd move your finger, and depending what's on the screen, it could take two seconds or so for it to actually flip screens.
Having used both I'd wait as you're waiting til July. There will be other choices like the Thrill as well as possibly a SGS2.

The icons don't have a background on the homescreen or custom launcher. I also couldn't disagree with your screen assessment any more.
The atrix colors are ok. The viewing angles are terrible however. Blacks are bright!

someone at work had the infuse today. too big and i seriously dont understand what the fuss is all about with regards to super amoled +. Its nice, but too cartoony. Cant go back to anything less than what the atrix has.
i have had the atrix for a couple of months. Bought SGS2 last week and IT IS GETTING RETURNED!
When compared to Atrix: Battery is awful, GPS is poor, sound is poor and it wont make it for more than 4 hours on a charge. I assume the Infuse is going to be similar.

4 hours on a charge? Come on man... That's ridiculous. No one is only getting 4 hours without doing something massively wrong.
I finally had a chance to check out the Evo 3D in store. For those who still haven't had a chance I thought I'd share some thoughts.
One of the first things I did was open up the gallery and check out the 3D photos. The 3D effect works very well. It seemed to have an inward depth, nothing jumps out at you. As many reviewers said before there's definitely a "sweet spot" where the 3D works. I found that if I moved my head only slightly to one angle or distance the effect was diminished. You definitely couldn't show off 3D photos to a group of people standing around you. After a short while viewing the 3D images I felt that I had to strain my eyes and almost concentrate to view them properly. Not everyone's eyes are the same so maybe your experience will differ.
The 3D is definitely faster than the 4G in every way. However, it's interesting to note that I compared the 3D to a Nexus S side by side. The Nexus S actually felt and looked more fluid while scrolling through menus and screens. Whereas the 3D had a slight jerkiness to the movement. I'm guessing this is caused by the animation heavy Sense 3.0 transitions. I imagine if you put stock Gingerbread on the 3D it would be much smoother.
All in all it's a good phone. For those who want the novelty of 3D then this is an obvious choice. For me, I think I'll pass and see what's around the corner.

Ditto.
I checked out the 3D yesterday at my local Sprint store and agree with everything that you said. The 3D is pretty cool, but seems like a huge gimmick. The phone is amazingly fast. I really didn't notice the jerkyness that you were experiencing but I only compared it to my EVO. I am also waiting to see what comes around the corner in July before I make a jump.
Agree, played with one for an hour on launch day, and couldn't pull the trigger. Thought the 3D was awesome, but wouldn't use it all that much. Speed was noticeably faster and even felt more powerful, but I'm waiting for a slimmer OS, hopefully the Nexus Prime.
agreed, the 3d also hurts my eyes a bit. but, imagine how exciting itll be when full 3d roms are flashed onto that beast?
Haven't checked it out, but I'm happy enough with my Evo that I'm probably going to wait for the Nexus Prime as well. I prefer AOSP anyway.

This, or the Samsung galaxy s 2
I agree, the 3d is a gimmick, I felt that 1 the 3d is limited in usage on te phone and 2 if i look at it long enough, I will get a headache. plus it appears the 3d pioc can only be viewed in landscape mode.
Not a big Sammy fan, but gotta give the SII a go if it outs soon as expected.
I stayed with the EVO 4G because I knew the EVO 3D was a huge gimmick IMO..
Plus I didn't like the fact that it came with a weak 5 MP camera...
I'll wait for the Evo 4G+ with 8mp cam and dual core.....
A NOTE TO EVERYONE THAT SAID it hurts their eyes after a while.... if your vision is NOT 20/20. MEANING if both eyes are not exactly the same... it will hurt your eyes. so for example, 20/15 or 20/30 30/20. blahblahblah. DO NOT buy a 3D phone. it's pointless to you. idk if glasses would help you guys out. but having your eyes corrected MIGHT help. but that's costly.

Info source? It's easy to blame someone's eyes and not the technology. I have perfect sight and still felt it a little straining. Nothing I couldn't handle but it's not something I'd want to watch a full length movie on either.
I said the same thing before I purchased it. The 3D is no gimmick its additional badassery. Thats all I been doing is recording 720p 3D and taking 3D pics. YouTube videos in 3D are freaking sweet. The adreno 220 gpu plays games and handles graphics better than any device out there. 3D games are jaw dropping. I believe the 3D will be the best phone on the market until 2012 based on the 2011 line up I've seen. I will say i like the design on my og EVO way better; why htc put the charger port together with hdmi idk, I HATE how its on the left of the phone and not bottom. That's easily the biggest fail imo. Effin cord gets in way so prepare to be annoyed if you wanna use the phone while its plugged. Not to mention I wish it was flush all around like evo; camera button and 2D/3D slider is lame. That alone fcuks up the design...
I have the worst vision on here probably 20/200 and 3D doesn't bother me one bit after first time.

I don't take a lot of pics or record much video with a phone, and don't play games on it. No reason for 3D.
I didn't buy one because:
~No kickstand. I use mine on my desk at work and at home.
~No landscape mode for the homescreen/app drawer. Don't know the reasoning for that.
~Charge port/USB port on the side- even with a kickstand case it's major fail.
~External buttons sticking out for 3D and camera- at least recess them!
~Dual cameras on the back, more to smudge up with fingerprints, looks funky.
I'll wait for something else to come out before using my upgrade.
I agree 100% with the original poster. I don't really care for the 3D part, I also noticed the extremely narrow viewing angles and I felt like I was straining my eyes to focus on it. I'm actually not a big fan of the camera button simply because it makes the picture blurrier when I try to press it. Instead of just a light simple tap on the screen, I have to exert pressure on the button which makes my hand slightly shaky and then the photo doesn't come out as well. But I guess it probably also has a button you can tap on the screen so that rant was pointless lol.
They had a Nexus S next to the Evo 3D at my store too. I also noticed how the Nexus S seemed almost more fluid and faster than the 3D. I was comparing the 3D right next to my Evo as well, and it definitely was a lot faster. But other than the upgraded internals nothing really stands out to me. The screen is again better than the Evo's but still lacking in comparison to others (Nexus S, GS II). But nothing just jumps out at me like how the original Evo did.
I am waiting for the Galaxy S II to come to sprint. I'm just sold on that phone. Super skinny, very professional looks, screen is absolutely gorgeous, and samsung has continually shown that their hardware is second to none. I feel like TouchWiz doesn't have as much bloat as Sense does (even though I love Sense widgets) and I hate the Sense launcher. TouchWiz has exactly what I want in the launcher, apps messaging phone and internet.
I have the 4g and I got my wife the 3D.
I have to say the 3D is awesome. The pics are cool and we enjoy them. We have a 16 month old son that we take a ton of pictures of and the 3D ones are nice to have.
As for the rest of the phone, it is blazing fast. Zero lag for me. You click something and its instant. Even the gallery is speedy.
I am running the last MikG ROM and you can easily tell the difference in speed.
Also camera quality is way better on the 3D than the 4G even it is 5MP vs. 8MP. The lens is better and it handles low light situations a billion times better.
I am personally trying to hold out for the next Nexus phone for Sprint (hoping it will be this Christmas season) but it is getting harder and harder every day.
I'm not using my upgrade on this phone at all. Seems like basically the same phone, only they threw a gimmick in there. 3D and Shift are both gimmick versions of the original. I'll pass.

This is total BS. I have perfect vision 20/20 from lasik surgery 5 months ago, just went back into the office for my checkup and still at 20/20 vision. It still strained my eyes to look at it for any length of time.

Off topic:
Thats crazy you say that, my vision is very poor, near sight in left eye, far sight in right eye. Its a pain lol, w/o glasses or contacts and the two come together talk about freaking migraines from hell. Im getting a lasik consultation in two weeks. Could you give me your input on it? Hows your vision treating you, are your eyes extremely light sensitive now? My friend says he cant go outside without shades because his eyes after surgery are really sensitive to the sun. My vison is bad but the 3D doesnt hurt my eyes though....hmmm weird. Some of the stock 3D pics that come on the phone did hurt a bit lol.
I have a friend that has one and we traded phones for a couple hours last night. Here's my mini review/reason I'm getting it. First the kickstand. I know alot of people hate the kickstand placement because it places the charging port and hdmi port down. Surprisingly unlike the evo the kickstand clicks in place which makes it possible for you to flip the phone upside down with the kickstand basically flat. This allows you to charge the phone while also watching Netflix with the kickstand propping the phone up. If your brave you can also have the phone in portrait with the kickstand open but the phone rocks if you touch it though I think it would take alot to make it fall over.
My epic barely gets one 3g bar in my dorm room his photon however has 3 or 4 which means alot lol because when I go outside its full. 4G on the other hand demolished my epic doing 10mb whereas my epic did 5 or 6 on a good day. Call quality is something I've never really been able to gauge I called a couple landlines and cellphones with no issues besides that I had to turn the volume down which is agood thing. Speakerphone was clearer then my epic it didn't sound distorted as usual when I try to use it and wasn't as obvious.
Now to the more important stuff the software. To each his own but Motoblur is 10x better than Touchwiz and nothing close to the Motoblur of old. The widgets aren't flashy on the outside almost as if their trying to conserve battery but I like them especially the messaging widget. I don't see myself using handcent anymore because it allows you to have all your messaging in an universal App which is wonderful for me because I'm always on twitter and facebook. The music app is good also especially for people who buy music from amazon. The social widgets I didn't really get into because well it wasn't my phone lol. Most importantly people say the phone lags switching from screen to screen and honestly I think it's the frame rate of Motoblur because I installed Go Launcher, ADW, LP, and Zeam(favorite) and they flew I mean fastest i've seen on any phone even the 3vo and to be sure I loaded them all 7 screens with widgets and transitions.
I only had the phone for 4 hours but the battery life was good only used 20% doing all the stuff I've spoken of above. However, he came looking for my charger and my phone was fully charged when he got it lol. Now for a few tidbits the camera is great I didn't see this bluish tint people speak of or the pixelation maybe I wasn't looking hard enough or don't have a keen enough eye. After the system used its necessity after a clean boot there was about 700mb of ram for use which is well self explanatory. Apps open instantly, bluetooth connects perfectly quicker than my epic, and wifi had no hiccups, and I've talked about 4G already but I'm starting to get hungry any questions ask personally I plan on buying one but who knows may still end up with a within when it comes out.

Yes, it a blur problem. The "Blur" on the Droid 2 R2D2 is exactly the same in that it lags, which makes the phone seem slow. As soon as I put LP on it(it was my cousins) it was pretty smooth.

I'm happy with the Epic lol. XD
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
Thanks for the review. Keep us updated.
I'm happy with my Epic too, but I'd be happier with +20dB more signal that I might get with the Photon. I tested that today at a Sprint store...
There is also the dock for your TV which works great. I have not yet seen if the actual dock is required for the app to work or if a straight cable can be used from phone to TV...
There is also an app to share files from computer to the phone over 3/4g or wifi (supposedly). The review sites have all been full of **** and half assed reviews and I have only seen a single mention of this feature, no details whatsoever.
The UI does lag and it did look great when I used both GO and ADW on the store demo..
I also changed the theme to a couple different styles and all looked great.
I noticed no discoloring on the camera pictures and the screen looks real good on color duplication. My Epic side by side has a greenish tint, while the Photon looked as though it might have had a warmer (red) tint, still accurate colors though..
The sound from the speaker sounded a bit clearer from my Epic while playing Electronic and Classic Rock.
I did not try calls or texts or anything like that but yall can see other reviewers for that info. Overall quality of calls seems good.
I removed several apps that looked like they were bloatware...
I will find out for sure when I go to another store to play for an hour or so...
Edit:
The camera has very few options. I like the panorama option on my Epic, even though it is low resolution. There just didnt seem to be many customizations or settings to tinker with, but I might have just missed them in my limited time... I would love to confirm if the camera sound can be killed...

what is it about the screen that was horrible ?
asking because I'm on the fence about getting the photon.. I managed to get an early upgrade (full upgrade) 2 wks before my 12 month anniversary and I was playing w/ one and it seemed ok.. just wasn't impressed w/ the screen too well..
can you offer a review of the screen ?
Thanks
The screen is not horrible at all. In fact it is actually pretty awesome. The Super AMOLED screens are just an over saturated display that kill your battery like crazy. The Photon's display is impressive plus it has the best battery life for a smartphone ever.
Look at Engadget's review. Their positive is the screen!

I second this. Very much like the display.
Battery life is superb. 1 day 3 hours of moderate to heavy usage and I still had 13% left.
Panoramic mode for the camera is under menu then picture modes.
Pixel count is 540 x 960
And the option to connect to your tv without the **** and just a cable is there but you need to be rooted.
The bootloader is also unlocked already. And root access of available without dock now.
If you have the chance I say upgrade and test it for a week or 2 then decide for your self. I think I may be keeping it.
