Dead Pixel - Xoom General

Just noticed a pixel stuck on a redish color on my week old Xoom. Should I return to Best Buy or can I fix it?

I just noticed a stuck and dead pixel on my xoom and I went to try that app but unfortunately the two bad ones are where the bottom menu bar is in the app and I can't move it. =(

Memorize the location of the pixel and turn off your monitor. Using a pointed, but dull, object (such as a screwdriver) poke your monitor gently at the point of the stuck pixel. You may want to use a protective cloth so the object doesn't directly touch the screen. While poking, turn the monitor on and continue to poke for a few seconds. This may fix the pixel.
Tap on the stuck pixel with a soft but pointed object such as the edge of a pencil eraser. You will need to do this hard enough to create a discoloration at the point of impact but not so hard as to hurt the screen. After tapping the monitor five to 10 times, the pixel may start to behave normally.

thanks for the help but i returned it the following day. Im not gonna bother looking anymore, it will just bug me. id rather not see it lol

Odd 'dead pixel' issue

I was browsing through the gallery just now and noticed a dead pixel. Or what I thought was a dead pixel.
When swiping through the gallery, there is a picture of a pink flower, followed by a black and white photo of a man. The b&w photo is portrait. I had the phone in landscape mode.
In the black space in the top left, I noticed a red dead pixel. I swore and carried on swiping.
Next was a landscape picture of a dog, but I noticed as I continued swiping that the dead pixel was still there.
Next is a skater in portrait mode...and the dead pixel is gone!
I swipe back, it comes back.
Swipe forward, it's gone again.
Anyone else's do this? I had to do it in a dark room to notice.

This sounds like the dead pixel may be in the photo rather than the phone.
If you only get a dead pixel on specific photos, but cannot get the same result on any other screen on the phone, then it is probably the photo.
Take a photo so that the image is black (photo dark piece of cloth) if resulting picture has dead pixel, it is phone screen and you have a dead pixel, but one pixel should not cause too much problem.
With LCD screens, normally there is a percentage of pixels that can be faulty before it is classed as defective under warranty or sale of goods act.

That's what I originally thought, but the dead pixel remains stationary when swiping between the photos! It's so strange!

if it was porn pictures, then the red dot is god's eye watching you
If you see a red pixel illuminated against what should be black, you could have a stuck subpixel. A "dead" pixel implies the inverse; a black pixel where there should be colour.
On the photo of the man in black&white, with the phone rotated landscape, there are black spaces either side of the photo as it was taken in portrait.
On my phone, these black spaces are pure black.
When you display a picture with colour that occupies the space of the pixel in question, you wont notice it. Each pixel has three smaller subpixels that make up the colour; a red, green, and blue one. When the stuck pixel's nextdoor neighbours switch on, you won't notice the problem. The problem is that this pixel won't turn off.
If you want to return the phone, I'd make your mind up and do so as soon as possible while you still can - but perhaps using the proximity sensor thing as the reason, as most manufacturers/shops won't accept dead/stuck pixels as a return reason unless theres several of them, or if they're right in the middle of the screen.
Best of luck mate.
I'm not sure if you're understanding me. It's actually ok, just not when looking at that particular photo! I'm just trying to understand why. It's fine everywhere else, just not on that photo. But its not the photo as it doesn't move with the photo when it swipe.

Oh right!
That's strange then! I can't reproduce the behavior on mine, I'm afraid.
Did you change the UI skin from the default?
A red pixel is just stuck, I had one on my laptop and I used a program the flashed colours over it and after an hour it was gone, a black pixel will be there for life ..
It happens will lcd sometimes
Doubt anyone has made a program on the android market for this though

Daft question but have you tried deleting the photo and seeing if it moves to the next or is gone for good?
No, I might though. Be interesting to see what happens.

You can try this: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.xcitoproductions.checkmypixels
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcLAiDDV_IU
I made a very poor video of it. Need to set it to 480p and watch fullscreen to see the stuck pixel.
I can't see that pixel you are talking about...had another look tonight
I saw it. It's kind of a glowing red light more than a stuck pixel. Very strange indeed.

Yep - very strange. I think you have full rights to write HTC about this and ask for explanations.
Hey,I know apart from dead pixels, there are some other 'bad pixels' like colourful pixel(sorry,I translate it directly from Chinese, that's what we call them. There must be an English name.) and white pixel.Different kinds of bad pixels behave various from different colours of background. That's why you can see them in some situations while some you can't.We often test 'bad pixels' of screens of laptops with several colours of background when shopping.
Maybe you could give this a try as well: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.jscreenfix.android
Good luck mate!
Edit: Instructions say that you have to leave it running for about 10 minutes.

Desire HD LCD colour spots

Hi there,
I was looking at my phone the other day. Whenever the LCD displays black, i can see around 12-13 little colour spots on my screen. I was thinking LCD burn in or something but my screen hasn't been on for long periods of time displaying the same thing. The spots are VERY faint, It's hard getting a picture of them. Any threat? Could it grow and spread to other parts of the screen possibly?
Cheers
Dial *#*#3424#*#* and check the display test. It could be dead (sub)pixels of a certain colour.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Cheers mate. I'll try that now.

Okay, from what it seems in the display test, there is no permanent problem with my screen. On the black slide the screen has no issues. Thanks a lot for the help.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
EDIT: Having a closer look it turns out them colour spots are still there. Most likely be a replacement for me. Cheers.
I thought I had a similar issue. After closer inspection it looks like 2 of those 'touch points' (Can I call it that? I'm referring to those dots that make up a matrix that is present on the screen itself, best viewed at certain angles when the screen is black)
Well it looks like 2 of those points are overly glossy, like an over active pixel. Seems most noticeable on a white background. Anyway to sort that out?
Well, I called HTC. They aren't aware of anything like this being 'normal' so I presume its a faulty screen. Mines getting picked up by HTC on the 4th for a repair/replacement. I would rather do without the hassle but I just don't want it to worsen.

Super AMOLED burned in

I just realized my screen has some burned in. I mean, like the clock on the top right side. When I'm viewing video, I could still see the stain of the clock. Does anyone have the problem?? I've switched ROM and still see the burned text/clock..
I repair TVs for a living. And if its true burn in ... its permanent ... however for that to occur you would of had to keep the screen on for quite a while and a steady long period of time

It can happen. I have the AM/PM burned in on mine, but it's only noticeable if I use Screen Test app.
I suggest you toggle the AM/PM off if your ROM allows it and use a thinner font. It's also a good idea to avoid white or bright themes.
My phone is less than a year old and I've noticed the same thing too. I've noticed letters from the keyboard a few times too.
My Vibrant has the same thing. It's not noticeable most of the time for me so I dont mind. I also had a Captivate last year that had a blue tint burned in around the entire perimeter of the screen.
I've had my phone since august and no burn ins here.

Just call tmobile they will send a replacement. Ive sent two phones because of it.
Backup before you call. They will want you to do a factory restore for troubleshooting.

Me too. rush pipe game cause some temporary burn in on my phone. I stop playing the game.
AMOLED = Miniature Plasma's?
If our screens behave anything like a plasma i'm wondering if you can fix it by using a similar "screen wipe" method that is used in plasma's. A lot of plasma owners confuse Image Retention (IR) for Burn In (BI). Burn in will never go away, but image retention will. If you don't want to send your phone back, you may want to try using a flashlight application that turns your screen all white. That way your screen is firing at full brightness and hopefully it can get rid of those ghost images on your screen.
funny to come across this thread...seeing as i just noticed my stain yesterday.....same thing for me, its the clock
could this be grounds for a brand new device??
I had a slight burn in since December of the AM/PM. However since than I changed to Military time and now I can only see the M in the clock area. It also helped that I changed ROMs and such. However It can get annoying. I may just have it exchanged though. Knowing that I will most likely get a refurbished one...
It is because of the AM/PM burn in that I try to use the hide clock option in EDT roms and CM roms. No more burn in!

Hmm, I guess if it isn't true burn in, that would work.
Only way to test that is if your getting a replacement for burn in, go ahead and try that, running your screen at full brightness all white, and see if it goes away.

Weird square pattern on glass of screen?

I noticed a strange pattern of squares all over the screen..they are rather Invisible until you look at it under some light already certain angle. I tried my best to take a picture but it's hard to see if you're not looking from human eyes. Either way I don't know if this is part of the design or is it some type of weird defect. I attach some pictures check it out. Look near the light glare and you will see the little square patterns they are all over the screen I tried to capture it as well as I could.

Running on the assumption that its a dead pixel the only way to repair it would be replace the lcd but its seems quite drastic for the sake of one pixel.

The pixel is visible (bright, white maybe?) so it's not dead, just stuck.
And no, stuck pixels are not fixed under warranty unless they cross over a certain threshold (a certain number of them over the whole screen, or another, smaller number if they're all close to one another).
But it's not the phone's fault, almost all screens develop these over time. My old screen had 2 of them in under a year.
