Hi there, the Aria will be my first phone that does more than make calls so please excuse my noobish questions, there will be more to come.
I've read and watched all the reviews out there and my first concern is the preinstalled ATT apps that will cost me money if I accidentally use them. Is there any way of removing them yet?

I can't speak for this particular phone but in all of my old AT&T phones, even if you leave the preinstalled junk on there, it's not necessarily easy to "accidentally" use them; they usually have confirmation screens and/or warning screens telling you that it will cost money to use them.

Annoying, isn't it? Welcome to the magical crapware filled world of ATT branded smartphones, where folks are so generous that you get 5 map programs pre-installed instead of just one.

Let's just hope this will be as easy to get root for as other HTC phones have been recently.
It's very similar to the Legend. I wonder what SPL versions/Radios are in the Aria compared to the Legend and I wonder if a parallel dev path can be followed for root and custom recovery.
All I really want to know is the hot spots app to make it compatible with att hotspots, cause if so, post rooting you can remove all the other junk, but I would love to get ahold of that apk from a dump for my n1.

I'm hopeful we will have root within the next couple days. It's like a competition for devs now when a new android drops they rush to root it lol

a few questions
Wrong place to post. Sorry...
Im a first time google maps user and I think the program is brilliantly presented. Used it a few times now to just drive around and i its quicker than my Garmin Nuvi
I used the Maps program yesterday, I assume it is the Google one, there wasn't any talk of charging. It worked absolutely great! I don't like unasked for crapware on my phone, so I am looking forward to learning how to clean it up.
I absolutely love this phone! Every once in a while it seems to freeze for a second or two, but it has been very responsive so far.
yah i was wondering also about removing the bloatware
i did have a tilt and it was very easy to remove the bloatware right out of the box without hooking it up to a pc, with a restore then soft reset before all the extra stuff was reinstalled

If you don't want Data coverage (as I did) call AT&T, & request that they shut it off... I did it early in my HD2's life, so she only got me hit with a $1.85~ in service charges.
not sure
I was told you have to have the data plan with any PDA phone, they put it on a used blackberry we got my daughter just to texted. and they said we had to keep it. Have they changed their minds with the multiple data plans available.
Thanks

Hey I'm not a promoter or paid to tell people to, but use an app called advanced task killer. It's on the market under free apps. When you are afraid something is running, go to it and click it. Depending on where it is it will either kill everything or ask you what to kill with everything selected. I have a small data plan so I have to use it to save money.
Task Killers actually increase battery usage and can cause other problems with apps and the OS. You're better off turning off auto-sync and background data if you're worried about apps using data.
So, after having the tab for a day and a half, was getting twitchy on making phone calls.
I want that Phone icon on the screen!
So, after rooting (uber easy actually, z4root works a treat), got adbWireless to enable me to connect and got a shell.
Bit of juggling, mounting the /system and pushing in the Phone.apk's.
I've tried a whole bunch of Phone.apk's from anywhere I can find them basically, and still no joy as of yet.
In fact, getting a few errors now in a few places (PhoneInfo and TabletInformation errors).
Makes sense it's not trivial as we'd have seen something already probably.
And don't know if it's the phone.apk or the radio being used that's set to block.
How's everyone else getting on?
Thanks a lot for posting... I am anxious to see if we can do this... a friend of mine thought this would be a simple "install the phone apk" but we found that didn't work on Wednesday.
The only other one I've seen who's trying (publicly maybe?) is jdmadonna who posted his results over in the Tab Themes and Apps forum today that he rooted with z4root, then installed the phone.apk as you did, then the Tab started vibrating every few seconds and showed the message android phone has stopped working. When he rebooted, everything locked up apparently... he said he lost the network provider and baseband and could not bring them back, so he returned the tab. He had been looking for the Euro phone.apk, so I'm not sure if that's what he used here...
Guess it will not be as easy as we had hoped.... hopefully this nut can be cracked somehow.
Adding insult to injury is the Samsung T-Mobile user manual for the Tab which refers to it as a phone throughout! However, the pretty much useless pamphlet that T-Mo provides call it a "device."
Wish someone from Samsung would anonymously step in and help us out. The t-mo salesman I worked with (who was very helpful wrt to possibly using it as a phone) said he'd heard that some folks were/are? threatening a class-action lawsuit against the carriers... obviously a money maker for the lawyers... but I don't care... if it'd make them let us use it as a phone, that'd be fine with me.
Couldn't the carrier block phone access for the device by the IMEI number? Then it wouldn't matter what the user did, the tablet would never be able to make a call.
Here's what guyverunit had to say in this thread at post no. 52:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832643&page=6
Someone else reported this too... when you press activate on the Verizon phones at the start, they MAKE CALLS OUT.... this is what he said:
"so knowing that Verizon was selling there version at Best Buy i popped in there today to check it out, see if there plans or anything were better. they had just taken it out of the box and were setting it up. i went to work and on my lunch went back. they had the display set up so i played with it. it was still at the activation screen, i pressed activate and behold it dialed out to do the activation. even had a phone icon in the top bar.
so i talked to the best buy mobile manager there and ask if they had gotten it passed the activation he said no but he would try again. he tried and it dialed out. i said oh so it can make calls, he said yes its just not put into the software to do it for the user end but yes, it can make calls. he also said he gives it two weeks till the DEV community hack it to do just that. LOL"
The t-mo phones do not make phone calls to activate... at least mine didn't... the sales guy activated it by using the bar code and the computer and no "activate screen" came up at all... went straight to browser.
Don't know if that means the phones themselves are different... or if Verizon just kept the Euro phone activation approach...
Maybe the Verizon phones would be the best ones to work with?

One of the Phone.apk' did that for me too. The Phone.apk I'm using now has stopped showing me the connection in the top bar, so looks like that's related to that as well, but at least it's not crashing like it was.
I should really reflash back to base (is that possible atm?) and see what's doable.
I'm still holding on for a euro rom that's flashable to enable everything.
Do you think the Euro rom will work with US hardware, or should they be identical?
I was curious about Paten's question re the IMEI no. possibly being blocked and did a little searching...
I found a freelance programmer's site... codepainters blog....
http://codepainters.wordpress.com/2009/12/11/android-imei-number-and-the-emulator/
and in the course of saying how to change the IMEI number, he says this at the beginning:
"Anyway, code analysis shows that IMEI/IMSI request goes down through all the telephony layers (see the diagram), eventually getting to the baseband device."
I find this interesting because jdmadonna and you describe the phone.apk causing problems down to the baseband level... as did you...
Obviously, IANAAD (I am not an Android developer - my programming days are way in the past)... so maybe there are myriad other things that can cause a problem down to the baseband level...
Maybe it's just as simple as unblocking the ISEI no. as Paten suggests...
I'm also hopeful about the Euro flash, but am not brave enough (nor do I know how) to do it!
You guys are using a different SIM from the one you received with your Tab right? (if you got it on a plan). One that you know voice calling works on?
In Australia, the Tab does not have voice disabled, but they force you (for the initial launch) to sign up for a data only plan. The SIM you get on this plan is blocked for voice, but works for 3G and even sending SMSs.
You just might want to make sure that the SIM you have in actually works for voice in case you DO get it working from a software perspective, but it is just the SIM that is stopping the call.
Aye, swapped the sim over from my other phone (though the PAYG sim I got actually did support voice/data apparently, but I didn't want to risk it so took a known working sim)
Phone.apk
Radio stuff
imei
Don't know. Could be any of them, or combo of 2 or more even.
It's really crazy. I appreciate they probably want to keep it simple as a tablet device, but they're missing out on revenue. "Want to use voice? that's available for another 10 bucks and/or a different(more expensive) sim"
Keeps it working for people who just want a tab, and gets more cash from people who want to dump their phone.
Think it's telling that ALL the telco's are limiting the voice as if anyone of them broke ranks and offered voice, they'd all have to.
Guess we'll see which Telco chickens out first!
/sigh
Re the SIM card... the holder mine came in does say data only, but the tmo rep said it could still handle voice.. seemed odd to me... since jyveafk has tried switching it, guess I'll wait to see if a solution turns up... or the tab is going back and I'm not getting a new phone when my contract's out in protest!

If you had followed your own advice (search and engage brain ), you would realize that they are talking about US Tabs, as the phone function has been disabled on these.
Euro Tabs have phone functionality as standard and the Yanks already know this so your post came over as a little sarcastic!

Hello everyone, I just recently got an HTC Aria and it is my first Android phone. A friend recommended I come here and see how I can make my Aria "better" so what do you guys recommend.
I've read a lot of the posts on here and it seems that I should root my phone, but as I stated previously I'm really new to all this so can you guys help me out and give me some tips.
Thanks!

Tips:
1. Read, study and reread, especially the STICKY threads that usually contain Q&A information for new users.
2. Forum Search and Google will also be your friend.
3. If you do have questions, posting in this "General" section is the best place to start.

What it says above is a great way to start. I just got an Aria too and for me the first thing I wanted to do was to get rid of the AT&T crapware off the phone. After rooting, which is super easy compared to how it was a few years back, then you can just search for what you want to do. I am new to Android but have been on this forum for years and it's the best place for anything you want to do to your phone to make it "better" Now I'm trying to add 3rd party apps that are not in the market, this gets a bit involved, but the info is here. I have installed different ROM's on other phones before, but don't really care to do that with the Aria yet, but it is definitely an easy way to get the Aria upgraded to Android 2.2 and get rid of the crapware and AT&T's limitations that they put on their phones at the same time.
Everyone here is super helpful as long as you read first and ask questions later. Cheers!

Thanks! I'm a total noob with everything though, I get really confused with this stuff. So far I think I've seen two different methods for rooting the Aria can you guys tell me which is the best one? So far all I've done with my Aria is get swype on it :3

Install HTC Sync so that the usb drivers get installed.
After you get rooted, I suggest you reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery mode and do a 'nandroid' backup. Do a search and you'll find more info about how to do that.

That's purely opinion. The good news is we only have a few to choose from, but they are very good roms. If you like the stock look/feel if the aria then one of the two liberated roms would be a good choice. One is based on android 2.1 with sense ui (came stock on the aria) and the other is based on android 2.2 with sense ui. Then theres cm6.1, which is based on android 2.2 but without the sense ui. All are good choices and very well developed. Try em all and see what you like. Ask those roms receive very good user support.
I personally started on liberated (i was hesitant to give up sense), but I eventually tried cm6 and once I adjusted I've never looked back.

I too agree with the post before mine, that it's all a matter of opinion. If you want mine, since you call yourself such a noob, I'd try one of the liberated rom's that have sense ui which is what you're used to. Then try cm6.1 at a later time once you're comfortable with your skills, it's very customizable and as mentioned before, well developed, with a large helpful community. Good luck. Btw, rom's are in the Development section.

Ok...
So I plan on taking my Droid into Best Buy tomorrow to see if they'll replace it. I'm having issues with my camera's shutter getting stuck...and it's been taking horrible photos (NOT liberty related)...
If any of you have any experience with their insurance plan (I pay $10 a month, so it better be worth it!)...my first question is what is their procedure?
Do they pop open a brand new phone and replace it for you?
That would be fantastic...
Secondly,
once I obtain said phone...can I restore a nandroid backup from my prior phone on my new one?
I don't need instructions on how to do this or anything like that...just info on if that would be advisable or not.
And lastly,
I LOVE that liberty eagle on the lockscreen in Liberty 2.0.
But...I really do not dig the yellow.
Is there any way I can install the green gingerbread theme and somehow remove the changes it makes on the lockscreen?
Thanks in advance guys!
Bump?

I can't speak for the Best Buy part, but I have restored a backup from a different (but same model) phone with no problem.

Hi everyone,
I am about to buy a used Nexus One. I tried looking for a new one but they are nowhere to be found. I need the one that has the 850/1900 3G bands. I know the Nexus One is an old phone, but I like the size of it and it's still a powerful device. I have a few questions. I checked out a couple of used Nexus One and both of them had issues with the back return key and the home key. The guy that I'm going to meet next week assured me that everything is working fine on his device. He had it for 1.5 yr and took care of it. I have read the issues with the power button. What else should I test the unit for? Also, how can I tell that I am buying the right Nexus One for Rogers Wireless in Canada? I read somewhere that on the back battery door if it says "PB99110" this is the 850/1900. Is that correct?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Happy New Year everyone!!!
I'm assuming Rogers uses a GSM network, and if so you would already be a Rogers customer correct? You could put your sim card into the phone, boot it up and verify that you are receiving 3G and that the phone calls out correctly and receives calls correctly.
Also, you can go to Settings> About Phone> Status and see information on the phone and network. You might find some of the information you're looking for there. If you're looking specifically for 3G you would see something related to UMTS or HSPA.
Hope you figure it out, good luck.
Yes Rogers is a GSM provider. Rogers has the same bands as AT&T. So I'm assuming as long as I see 3G data on the device, it does have the correct 3G bands. Is there anything else I need to look or check for on the Google One before buying?

I would turn it off and on making sure you don't see anything odd on the boot up and check the volume buttons. If he's selling the desk dock with it drop it in the dock and make sure it charges. Also check all of the soft buttons at the bottom of the phone. They're touch sensitive and you don't want to get home and realize the home button doesn't work at all.
Besides that I don't know what else to look for. Maybe try opening web pages, a you tube video, check for audio, etc. You might also want to double check which version of Android it's running so you know if it's stock or if it's a modified ROM.
Also, I have a AT&T Nexus One so I looked for the number you listed. I pulled off the battery door and behind the battery in the top left corner was PB99110 which you mentioned in your first post. It should be written in gray lettering on the black portion below the barcodes. Looks like if you see those numbers you should be good to go on Rogers.
"sola fide" thanks for your help. Good advice on turning the phone off and on. It does come with a charging dock but we're nowhere near a location that has a power supply so I can't test that out. I will do my usual checks when I buy a used phone, test the browser, music player to make sure the speakers are working fine, make a test call, etc. Now that I know there are issues with the power button ad soft keys, I'll test those out more. He said he never modded the phone so I'm assuming if I see 2.1 Eclair on the device, it's the stock rom.
Thanks for confirming PB99110 is the correct model for Rogers & AT&T.
Modding =/= Updating. It could be running froyo or gingerbread

The N1 got over the air updates up to Android 2.3.6 and I believe it is version GRK39. If you are running that, it should be the latest officially supported version.

Thanks for confirming that. I did end up getting the N1 and it is running 2.3.6. I want to root it to CyanogenMod but I don't feel comfortable doing it by myself. I'll wait when my brother pops by and get him to help me out. I never rooted an Android before so that's why.

It is actually pretty simple to get up and running (the hardest being getting the Android SDK set up on your computer). You can check out the instructions yourself here...

I would recommend following the Amon_RA steps, as it is a little less confusing.

Thanks for the link and the advice. I still feel more comfortable with my brother's help. Once it's done, then I might feel more confident in rooting my HTC Amaze, if there are roms for that phone. I haven't looked into that yet.
I'm having problems Installing a Custom Recovery Image. Could someone please help me?
Thanks
Please omit my previous post. I successfully rooted my phone to CM7! This is the first time I ever rooted a phone. Loving it so far!!!
You should try the MIUI rom, I have the latest one and its great in every aspect, otherwise, if you like a more 'clean' look try the Oxygen rom.

Is MIUI better than CM7?

Miui is like having a iPhone with Widgets of android. Its little simpler. But since you been using android, u will like cm7. Its faster and smoother with more options. Cm has all the goodies. U will enjoy it more. If not stock I will not use any other rom then CyanogenMod.

If Miui is like having an iPhone with widgets of Anrdoid then I'm not gonna like that. I have the iPhone4 (which is up for sale, lol) and I find it boring. So far I'm really liking CM7. One thing I did notice after I rooted the phone is my speakers distorts sometimes when I play music. Is this a known issue?

I don't play alot of music on my speaker. I use the headphones. I am not real picky with sound and stuff. As long as it works. But distortion is not good though. You will love CM7 and more to come.
Oh yeah I also had iPhone4s. I buy iPhones so I can sell it and profit from it. I have a reserve for my next tech gadget. LOL.

I think it was me who caused the distortion. I was messing around with the phone equalizers and enabled bass boost and also had the equalizer set on bass booster. I just changed a few settings and it sounds better. I'm hoping it was my mess up and not the speakers. I really like CM7 and I'm sure I'll come to love it.
And what is your next tech gadget?
I think I got hosed. When I was asking the seller if everything was working fine on the N1 he assured me everything is working perfectly fine, even the soft keys. I tested out the phone thoroughly before buying. Everything seemed to me working fine when I was testing it out. But you can't really tell if a certain function will continue to work as I continue to use the phone. Now I'm having problems with the back soft key. I have to hit it a few times before it responds. I tried hitting it harder or at different angles and it doesn't make a difference. Any suggestions? Am I screwed?
