Battery test - Galaxy S I9000 General

well i decided to give my phone a break and left it on minimum usage for almost 4 days now, other than some calls here and there, a bout of angry birds and checking mail via gprs and wifi.
after 4 days battery level is at 51%, (using battery indicator pro) and this is quite impressive considering my minimum usage and now am wondering how long it will go. 8days? maybe?
this is on stock JPY...no root or lag fixes.

Interesting,
Battery Standard battery, Li-Ion 1500 mAh
Stand-by Up to 750 h (2G) / Up to 576 h (3G)
Talk time Up to 13 h 30 min (2G) / Up to 6 h 30 min (3G)
thats the offical line in the specs

Hehe, I didn't do reallife tests, but assume without usage you can make over 20 days I used to have my phone on standby for about 30h, data, wifi off, 2G only, and lost 4%, that extrapolates to about 30days on standby?

HTC Magic Rogers with very poor battery life

I bought a Rogers HTC Magic and unlocked - currently with Wind.
I have been using the Rogers original software version 1.5.
I am unsatisfied with the battery performance.
This is my usage:
-about 30 minutes of talk
-about 20 SMS
-about 10 minutes of browsing
-15-30 minutes of gaming
From 8:30am to 11:30am, I have about 20% battery left.
Is this a normal performance for the battery?
yup its what ive got it sucks
I have a Roger's magic and I can get mine to last 3 days or so without a charge. I limit it to 2G though and turn off auto syncing with gmail. I text like mad, like 100s of texts in a day so the screen is on pretty often. The auto syncing does drain battery pretty bad.

I'd suggest you to turn the brightness lower or to use it less .
I ran into the same issue at the beginning but that's because I wouldn't put the thing down for 2 min.
But now my battery runs easily for 2 days without charging! (I still make calls and send sms)
Mine also a Rogers Magic 32A and I am very happy with it. I will browse almost 2 hours and games for an hour. You might need to turn off the program running at the back, it helps to improve the battery life a lot. Update to donuts will also help a lot too!

Battery Life...

How is the battery life in this bad boy?
Talk time Up to 10 hours on 2G
Up to 7 hours on 3G
Standby time Up to 290 hours on 2G Up to 250 hours on 3G
Internet use Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 6.5 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback Up to 7 hours
Audio playback Up to 20 hours
Id say about the same as any recent smartphone.
are these the official times on the website, or are these real life numbers

i should i said "anybody that owns a Nexus One:How is the battery life? "
I got mine with about 30%, took about 3 hours to kill it completely, I didn't put it down the whole time, I was on Gtalk, web, handcent and downloaded about 80 apps, my brightness is set to 50%, had GPS and WiFi off, 3G on. Seems alright so far, I'm charging it now that I let it die completely, so I feel like I'll get real results after that, but if it only takes 10% an hour to use it like I have been it will be more than fine for me in daily use.
I got 8 hours on mine on 3G with 1 hour of gps
Very, very preliminary:
Got mine at 11:00 this morning, charged it (turned off) to 95% by 13:30, have been playing with it for about 20-30 minutes per hour all day (so probably about 3 total hours of "use"). No phone calls, but lots of 3G. It's now 17:15, and the battery is at 56%. Screen is on next-to-lowest brightness, reception is good in my area.
Seems on-par-with or slightly-better-than my Dream.

Blows the G1 out of the water by far. I used navigation (gps) for 4.5 hrs straight on battery and still had enough juice left over to make it through the evening.
I've also made it 48 hrs on a single charge with fairly light usage. Even on days when I hardly put the thing down I don't run out of juice before I go to bed.

Yes sir you are right, I installed over 85 apps and I didn't even lose a quarter of my battery life. On g1 i would be down at least 50%.
+1 to the above 2 posters
Fully charged with Wi Fi on, my phone lasted just over the 12 hours of my shift. So just good enough in my book.

Weak Battery Life? Post Your Battery Use Numbers

I am still not too happy with the battery of the Galaxy, even though it should be conditioned by now. Nowhere near as good as the iPhone 3Gs, even though the 45nm chip in the galaxy, as well as the AMOLED screen, should be benefitial to battery life.
Maybe a good benchmark would be to see what readings people get at the time of the first "Low Battery" warning. You can see what depleted your battery by going to Settings/About/Phone/Battery Use. To get details, touch the corresponding bar in the graph.
Mine are:
20h 32m 4s since unplugged
Display: 38% (1h 54m)
Cell standby: 24%
Phone idle" 16%
Android OS 10% (CPU usage 50m 4s)
Voice calls: 6% (2m 54s --- WTF?!)
Android System: 4%
K-9 Mail: 2%
Advanced Task Killer: 2%
Those numbers look good to me somehow, I wouldn't expect better battery life after using the display for 2 hours and another 19 hours of standby? Especially as the phone can easily stand by another few hours on the last 15%...
i just got my phone recently, i'll post my results after a few weeks of daily usage.
i do a lot of 3G+, WiFi and SMS, not so much voice call, but regularly enough like two or 3 calls a day
that should be a pretty good test to see how long the battery last from full to like 20% that's when i usually recharge my phone if i don't carry a spare battery with me

It depends on what you compare it to, I guess.
I am comparing it to my old iPhone 3Gs, which would last about 48 hours, usually with considerably longer talk time than the 2m 54s I have on the Galaxy S. How can less than 3 minutes of talk show 6% battery drain?!
As I noted, the Galaxy S's smaller die (45nm) and AMOLED screen should be an advantage over the iPhone 3Gs's older hardware, yet the iPhone lasts markedly longer.
Anyway, I just wanted to see what others are seeing and how long their phones are lasting. It might be interesting to many others, too.
The galaxy S holds considerably longer than the iPhone 3GS. Probably longer than the iPhone 4 as well.
My current stats:
2D 0H 33M 41S Since unplugged
Voice calls: 34% (38m 37s)
Cell Standby: 28%
Phone idle: 19%
Display: 18%
Funny, it doesn't show the time when i played SandStorm and Asphalt.
Oh, and my current battery level: 66%
If i skimp on the battery, i can hold 5 days between charges.

WOW! This is just amazing!
How long was your screen on for only 18%? (I have mine set at the dimmest, but still....)
Do you use email much and if so, how many accounts and often do you have the phone checking it?
Wait, you use tons of WiFi and you're suprised that the phone won't hold too much?
In contrast to the iphones that require you to manually search for a network, android ACTIVELY searches for local open networks and connects to them.
When you're not using WiFi- TURN IT OFF.
If you're talking about cellular internet, that's another thing.
And the display (set to medium-low brightness, the brightest mode where it doesn't BURN MY EYES. Damn this display is bright) registers 1h 27m.

For what it's worth, my WiFi has been off for most of the day.
But, on WiFi discovey, my experience has been the opposite.
On the iPhone 3Gs, I always had WiFi and BT turned on. if I was not connected to WiFi, but WiFi became available, the iPhone would bring up a pop up, asking me if I want to connect to the network.
With te Galaxy S, I can have WiFi Notifications on, but unless I search for a network (usually by turning WiFi off, then back on), it doesn't inform me of available networks.
To boot, even though it remembers both my home and office networks, half the time it does not sign in automatically when I enter the area, but I have to do the off/on thing to get signed on

Well consider yourself lucky! you got an amazing battery from the future or something, because this is not what we are all seeing... I get a decent 30 hours with mine max...
Can you tell us how long is the display time ?
My guess is that I could stay 2 days with my phone if I was never swithcing on the screen.
The thing is that you seems to use your phone like I was using my old nokia 6310 ...
Try to play some music or video and you won't last 5 days or even 2days ... maybe 1 if you are lucky
Basically you have left your phone switch off 2 days and call 38mn and that's all ?? I can't tell you that my old iphone3GS is going to be pretty close in term of performance of battery
given that 1h54 give 38% of 85% for the OP I would say that you have maybe 20mn of display
The battery life of my SGS was terrible for the first few days of use. I don't have the battery usage numbers but the battery would only last for around 20 hours doing: 30-60 min call, 2hour music, 30mins video, 30mins game, and approx. 40mins web surf using mostly wifi.
But after about 5 charging cycles (discharging until battery ran low and the phone eventually turns off, then charging the phone to full), the phone lasts for two whole days with the same usage described above each day!
So I have noticed a significant improvement in battery.
If you haven't gone through the charging cycle and your phone is relatively new, give it a week before you think the battery life is crap
yeah I am still waiting for the improvment
After almost 2 weeks , a dozain of cycle I still don't see it coming ...
I guess I must be using the screen too much ( miminum light) ...
Afert 12h46 I am at 25% with 65% taken by the display , 10% by cell idle, 8% by android , 6% by network idle, 4% by call ...
I have already used the screen 3h14mn
I don't know what you do but on my side I am reading my mails, reading xda, reading some newspaper on the train, watching some video ...
So my crappy battery doens't seem to come from some app draining it ... but just from the display.
So basically nothing I could do except using it less than what I am used to
Display time was 1h 27m
mine last around 10h (display on 4,5h) and thats as low as u can adjust brightness in settings according to gsmarena blog display can last up to 10h...
im using dimmer app now. hope i get 5-6h (display time) with that.
ok i'll play:
10hr:10min since last unplugged.
Battery at 74%
Display: 50% (I leave it on auto brightness)
Cell Standby:19%
Phone Idle: 12%
Bluetooth: 8%
NDrive: 7%
Android System: 2%
I'm happy with that.
I'm easily getting through a 15 hour day with moderate use (my normal usage pattern). this is on a par with my previous Nexus One and iPhone 3G.
BTW, I keep the WiFi on persistently (even when the screen is off) because I heard it draws less juice than the 3G/phone data. (I typically spend a lot of time around the house on WiFi ...)
Battery killer is normally "time without signal", the N1 would average maybe 70% without a signal, the SGS is averaging around 30% without a signal - so based on that perhaps the battery isn't quite as robust as the N1 (which was on Froyo).
Anyway, I have no concerns about my SGS battery based on similar phones and usage patterns. I will be tempted to get an extended battery for it though (I had a Mugen 3200mAh on the N1 and that would give me 2 days under quite heavy usage).

Keeping the WiFi policy to never disconnect apparently uses less battery than the system thrashing between 3G and non-3G data when sync'ing etc. Typically WiFi will show as 2% battery usage at the end of the cycle.
I base it off my old N1 usage, which I got from here:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=006a844d7d335a90&hl=en

What would you consider heavy usage?

I know a lot of people brag about great battery life, getting 20 hours or so of life, but really, unless you have a godly battery, I doubt with heavy usage you could get more than 6 hours of life.
I'm asking for opinions here, because I get about 2 and a half hours of Display usage before my battery dies.
Is this about normal? I'm sure the signal plays a part, as I average around 92 - 100 dBm signal in my city, which I know isn't very good.
I turn off my 3G whenever not in use, I have display set 30% brightness, auto-sync is off, gps, bluetooth, and sometimes I put the phone in airplane mode when signal is weak.
My point is, even with all the battery saving tricks, I get about no more than 2 hours and 30 minutes of Display usage, regardless of whether I'm playing a game or using the browser.
Running CM7, with Conservative, min 245, max 998 MHz as well, stock kernel.
What do you guys get?
Hit up the sprint CS chat. Complain about battery life. Ask them if they can comp you an extended battery. Took two tries but a csr refunded my battery purchase in full. In my case I bought first then asked for refund. Worst case you could just return it
i get about 3 hours screen on with stock and double with my chinese extended battery.
they're both more than enough for a full day. i dont see how i would be bored enough to be using my phone screen on for 3 hours in a whole day anyway haha.
i think some people consider playing music for a long time a "heavy" use of the battery which in my opinion isn't true. playing music barely drains anything when it's on for a few hours even with 3g.
but yeah i dont think the stock has enough juice for screen on more than 3 or 4 hours. i get 20 hours usage frequently but that doesnt mean the screen is on the whole time. in a day i probably play half an hour of games read news on the bus for 40 min to and back. read some news browse the web during lunch and listen to music throughout the day.
My opinion. About 100 texts, 15-20mins of angry birds 4G on, lots of web browsing. That's heavy usage.
With stock battery I get about 5-6hrs of heavy usage. On Myn RLS5 with #15 kernel. Moderate use (4G off but wifi on, no angry birds) I can get about 8-9 hrs with stock.
mmm... i dont use 4g so can take that out. I send about 300 texts, web browsing games all that stuff. get about 4.5 hours of screen on.
Heavy use to me is prob checking Facebook and twitter at least 3 times an hour. Receiving 2-5 email an hour from 2 different accounts GMail and Exchange. Playing Angry Birds, The Sims 3 and Bistro cook around an hour combined for all of these.
Reception at my job is not that great so I get around 4-6 hours if I am using it a lot. If I turn off the 3G when im not using it then I can get much more life out of my battery.

bad reception = crap battery
My 'heavy use'
usually everyday I have work which is 4-6 days a week.
Over 350 texts a day (incoming and outgoing)
3 hours total gps/navigation
about 20-30 mins of total talk time
oc'd to 1.228ghz
about 2.5 hours of 4g ON
gps on entire time
live wallpaper always on (nexus revamped pro, fps is at 32, speed at 150)
used multiple apps (psn, xda, mx moto game, setcpu, 7 widgets total)
use flashlight app on high settings for maybe 1 min total time
screen brightness is always at 100%
I get anywhere from 7-9 hrs total time unplugged, I usually have about 10% left when taking these numbers.
I bet I could get a pretty good number if I underclock and turn auto brightness on.
My heavy use:
Get to work at ten
browse almost nonstop
text in between
youtube a few times
...on the charger by 2
Like someone else said, low reception kills batts.
3+ hours a day of Words With Friends.
Guilty as charged!
I get 4.5 hours every day of listening to Mike and Mike in the morning on the new ESPN radio app. I also check facebook several times...and get a few texts. But im sure the 4.5 straightforward hours of streaming is what does the damage.
I stream Radioio.com on my phone for about 5-6 hours a day while I'm at work.....I have the extended battery...and when I get home, I have to toss it on the charger Good thing I have unlimited data....

Pull phone of charger at 12pm. At work at 2. Battery at 90 something percent. Forums and browser non stop til almost 3 to which I gotta put it on charger. Oc'd at 1113 on rls 5 with kings #11. I don't talk battey as its non existent. Lol

I assume the bad reception must be the worse offender to my battery. I wasn't complaining or anything anyway, I was simply curious.
I have the stock battery, and 2 extra batteries for heavy usage. I primarily use my phone at work, as sometimes business is very slow and I rely on my phone entirely too much for entertainment.
I've been told my usage is moderate to heavy:
MikFroYo 4.5
MS79723's SBC #15 v7
Slayer's Cyan Dragon Theme
4g always on
gps only on when using Foursquare or Maps, otherwise off.
200-300 texts
5-10 minutes of phone calls
1/2 to an hour of angry birds
half a dozen feedr news widget articles I'll use the browser to read
30 minutes of general web browsing
Check e-mail several times
check calender once a day
Stream some music on Subsonic (only when I'm in the car but I have a car charger so I don't count this).
Check fantasy hockey leagues three times a night when there's games on
Check facebook/update status many times
Sometimes I'll use wireless tether and there's a chuck norris app I'm fond of, but that's not everyday. The kernel undervolts, I don't keep my screen on unless i'm doing something and with the SBC I get normally around 12-17 hours a day if I don't tether or dilly dally too much. Since I have a car charger and I charge at home when I'm in the shower or sitting at my desk, my phone rarely drops below 50% on my average day.
If I were in an office, I'd connect the phone to charge to my computer and the car charger has been invaluable. I highly recommend charging it whenever it's just sitting there (even if it's streaming something).
That's how I get through my day

Is the battery life still good? And on that note, how good is the standby drain (asking here because no one seems to have posted on that topic).
I'm worried about battery life because I'm seriously thinking about getting this over the OP6, but there aren't many reviews out there.

After 12 June update, sot has decreased. Now I get about 6~7 hrs BUT my brother (he uses this phone too) still gets 8 hrs. I'm on 20 June update but there's 22 June update (I didn't understand why ASUS gave this update very early. Also it is 410MB but the others were about 200~300 MB so I'm hopeful about this update) So I can't talk about the latest update (I didn't update)
About standby drain: When I was on 1 June update, only 4% gone whole night (11pm~7am) but I can't say anything about the other updates.
I will test sot and standby drain when I update.
Oh btw I want to write today's sot:
Last full (and last) charge: 16hrs 45 mins ago
Sot: 6 hrs 46 mins
5% left
Edit: I didn't see that my battery is 4% on screenshot. I'm sorry
Edit 2: I updated and not changed much. I got 7h25min max (used till 2%). I still couldn't test standby drain but if you want to know something, I can share my latest battery stats. 5h4min sot 15h23min total (so about 10 hrs idle) and 29% left. I guess I will get 2 more hours sot. According to me standby drain is good enough.

Looks decent. Could've been better, but I guess it's because of that IPS screen. Wish the battery could've been a bit bigger than the standard Zenfone 5.
I'm getting around 5:30 hours (on a Zenfone 5, not 5z), how do you manage to get 7:25?
UPDATE:
6:25 of mostly youtube and chrome browsing, bluetooth is always on paired to my smartwatch, as well as wifi and 4G.

I'm getting around 5:30 hours (on a Zenfone 5, not 5z), how do you manage to get 7:25?

How about your cellular signal, brightness, gps, Bluetooth and firmware?
About cellular signal: Do you get less than 5? Less signal causes phone to use SO MUCH battery and heat.

Actually the other day i was doing 6:25 SOT, which I'm quite happy with. 4G and WIFI are on all the time, and my phone is constantly connected by BT to my Amazfit Bip watch.
location is also always on, and I'm on the latest firmware (.19).
I am deeply impressed by the battery life of this phone. In first recharge I got close to 7h 43 min SOT, later in second recharge it went up to 8'36". Both cycles took considerable usage of roaming, bluetooth on for at least 4-5 hours, some streaming over bluetooth, wifi was used partially maybe not more than a couple of hours, google maps was used and finally the second recharge includes live streaming WC Final Match too. Both SIMs were occupied with primary on VoLTE and always data on.
Brightness was kept on comfortable 30-40% level except for while watching match, when it was close to 55%.

That's very good. I am getting about 7 hrs SOT. I am losing 8-10% overnight with wifi and data off with single SIM on 4G. Any suggestions how to improve standby drain?

.
Learn how to use mobile manager.
There stop apps from auto starting.
Close apps from recents menu when you go to sleep.
WiFi/data off.
Check WiFi settings where it does not keep looking for signals.
My standby drain over 8 hours is 1%, sometimes barely touching 2...
Am getting 4+ Hrs SOt only...Device idle has more drain in my mobile ..can any1 help to get more SOT...

Check if your area has constantly signal fluctuation. I remember my friend constantly had signals switching between 3G & 4G on his 3T and his battery drain was worse, but only at his home. Otherwise it was good.
If signal strength is good, it might be something else.

Thanks. Last night I kept it in 2G after taking care of above steps and lost 3% in 7 hrs, which is reasonable. However, on 4G still losing around 7-8%. Not sure if AI is consuming battery.

Yes, There is lot of signal fluctuation in my home.. might be the reason for draining . Thanks
I'm quite happy with the battery life on this device, constantly getting over 7h SOT with everything on [emoji108]
Sent from my ASUS_Z01RD using Tapatalk
Around 4.5 hour with 30 minutes of pubg and switching between social media apps
Hope it gets improved in pue update
Initially got 3h43m sot with dual sim in 4G. Switched it to 2G/3G mode and sot increased to 5h45. So guess it was the constant fluctuations from 4G to 3G that was causing the low sot. But the last update a few weeks back and my sot has dropped to 5h, no change in my daily usage. Still in 2G/3G mode. Don’t know why the loss in almost an hour of sot
Hoping for good optimizations on pie.
