dude to get this actually work.
post a link to this thread in your rom page, i'm sure many will give attention then
That's not really fair. :L I'm British and I have a Galaxy 3 and so do many other people in non-third world countrys.
Anyway, if we don't port cyanogen mod, nobody will do it. We'd actually have to port it ourselves like all other phone comunitys did. There is a page somewhere on how to port it, where to start and all that stuff. A port request there is worth nothing.
clarkkov said:
I meant generally, not exclusively. You probably have the respin of SG3 aka GT-i5801 Apollo for Orange network. GB is not the "Wild West" I was referring to (although it's not "The third world" either). But this is generally the case, and this is most probably the reason there is no CM for SG3.
I have a really good idea> Why don't we join our forces and make a custom rom. All brilliant engineering is wasted on customizing those stock ROMs, and there are too many just for one phone. Why don't Kyrillos, Apocalypse, Greenmod and Lestatious merge into one developing team, why don't we get Gingerbread source and compile it for Galaxy 3? Merge all those themes together, and make a professionally sound, clean and solid ROM?
I'm avoiding these so called custom ROMs just because they are overbloated with unreliable tweaks, sure they work faster, but I need my phone to be reliable and functional, not to post Quadrant benchmarks all over the net.
Just my 2 cents...

I'm using a custom ROM and it is fully functoinal, about this idea i think it will very hard to reach the "light" even the official cyanogaenmod's rom are not that stable and some bugs correct me if i'm wrong

Working togheter is not as easy as you think!
Armv team has done a rom after a month that is far more unstable than a lestatious, an indroid or a kyrillos, that are put togheter by one single individual! Probably with time things can be done, but mixing up individuals is not the way to go...
If our SGS3 developers wanna team up by themselves they will, as they've done already.
One more thing, 90% of non-beta ROM releases are very stable and reccomended for daily use, with near-to-zero bugs (remember samsung firmwares are full of bugs as well!!), not just for "post quadrant scores" as you're telling.

mr IT "manager"..a nokia phone might be ur appropriate choice ...Coz you are missing out on the android experience by not trying out custom romsss.......
clarkkov said:
Why the quotes? That is actually my title...oh I get it, you are being sarcastic, good for you
I have tried custom ROM on my colleague's SG3, he is running Kyrillos 3.0 I believe. While I'm still on my first battery charge (80%), he already had to recharge his battery and is now on about 60% and he has small FC issues with some apps that run flawlessly on my hone.
No need for hostility, I'm just debating and using valid arguments in this debate, I thought that's what the forums are for. If I'm wrong or misinformed, I would like to hear it. I appreciate the hard work of Android developers and naturally, want even more. Custom ROMs are great, but lack that final touch I'm talking about.
BTW, SGS got it's official Gingerbread update in Europe! Maybe someone knows how to port it to SG3?

The reason for the battery problems may be because of extra tasks he's running.. it's not just the ROM's fault. On my Kyrillos 3.0 I started to have battery problems, but I downloaded the Battery Calibration app which fixed any battery burning issues
I would say the complete opposite to you when you say that they "lack the final touch". A stock firmware is just so... basic? Custom ROM's have everything the stock firmware's have, and more. I have had NO problems at all with Kyrillos 3.0, that's why I havn't bothered to update to any later versions. Everything runs perfectly for this amazingly cheap phone.
I haven't tried the XWJPD stock but, as i'm reading on this very forum there are threads names "Multiple problems after official froyo update", nothing is perfect in this world ;-) nonetheless Samsung devs are!
Scouting the dev forum you will find a TON of fixes that have no drawbacks and are just PROs against the stock ROM (examples: sd card speed fix, audio fix published today, JIT enabled).
Yeah, surely, those "fixes" are not needed to USE the phone, but if you don't wanna optimize your phone why are you on XDA at all?
Anyway i'm not meant to be attacking you, it's just.. i don't understand your point of view; regarding ROMS, with time they will become better and better, so it's just about patience, Samsung has hundred of developers and imho their work is just above decent!

Not all custom roms are unstable. You can check which ones have overbloated tweaks and which dont and choose for yourself. I dont know about kyrillos 3.0, but indroid 3.0 no lagfix version worked great for me, and with apocalypse 1.3beta I haven't had stability problems (some bugs, but nothing major and no stability bugs) on a proper flash

You should really understand a bit more of what each team has done and is doing and how they go about it. Yeah, the individuals did great stuff, but you have to realize that they also combined a lot of other peoples work into their roms and had help (not trying to reduce earned props from the rom makers). Just take a look at their credits/changelog pages.

Thought I would just present some feedback on what I am seeing with some of the builds. Whilst both amazing and really cool there are a few basic considerations.
As close as possible to full functionality.
Whilst the latest ACE/Desire roms are way sexy it is a bit frustrating to find out 90% of the new Roms are using this and there is no camera. I use this feature a lot.
Whilst the old Sense was a little more plain it certainly worked and delivered more functionality. Across the board.
PPP versus RMNET.
100% for 80% of the time is not as good as 70% all of the time. Whilst RMNET was clunky and a hack it was reliable and worked 100% of the time. All the new builds are dropping RMNET for PPP which for a number of people is simple a loss of functionality.
I currently use Froystone 3.1 with a latter Hastarin kernel. This with the use of GPS status tool gives me
Almost instant GPS access.
Working and accurate compass
G-Sensor is working
Camera is quick and works.
Internet is great but a little unreliable.
Sense. Actually like it.
If I had a choice the only thing I would do is drop back to RMNET for reliability.

Actually, I think what he is writing is a personal perception of what will work for him/her. The writer did not "Biatch" about the in efficiencies of developers because the developers arn't efficient. The writer is merely stating what he/she wishes to see in a build and did so in a quite articulate manner with informative data that helps to substantiate the findings.
I think most of you should try not to "flame" unless you find writers obnoxious and out to make our dear developers look like they are wasting time. I understand that this is a developer site, all of us like it or not are beta testers. Being beta, the abundance of glitches are bound to happen. Reporting them is not a crime. Though the writer states in the topic as " What I really want in a build" come on guys, isn't a step into perfection what we all aim to achieve? Instead of flaming, we should just write our findings properly, may help even developers see what can be worked on and hopefully even collaborate to create a build that is universally accepted. HOW ELSE CAN WE GO NAND if we don't get the various builds to work efficiently! Is it effective now? YES! For sure.
Is it efficient now? Nope not yet, it will be, with everyone's help in reporting!

Hello Showtime7, that I agree with you. Should be in general discussion instead of this segment of the forum.
Whether a new thread was needed or not or whether it is in the wrong section the op made some good points. There is too much enthusiasm here for the latest build that doesn't work and not enough focus on putting together the best combination that works and is stable.

Folks, I just installed MIUI 0.1.14-RC2.5 and I am totally SPEECHLESS! It feels like a totally different phone! It doesn't even look like a typical Android phone anymore. Yes, it gives the phone an iPhonish feel, but it's amazing indeed. If you have been thinking about giving it a shot, NANDROID and give it a try!

UPDATE: Just wanted to add and compile a list of the little things that make this ROM great and UNIQUE. If you have any tip or things you have discovered, just post them in this thread and I will update the OP.
1. Built-in screenshot feature. Simply press volume down + menu, and you will be able to save a screenshot if your current display.
2. When making a call, you can RECORD the conversation. Once the number is dialed, simply click CALL TOOLS | REC and the call will be recorded and saved as an audio .amr file to your sdcard.
That's exactly how I felt when I first flashed it. Heck that's how I still feel after running it for close to 3 months. It's amazing.

Dude, I am in awe as to how flexible Android OS is. It's just amazing. I just finished flashing RC2.5 where they fixed the MMS issue. I think RC3 will be released tonight.

My opinions of course:
Sense ROMs - Myns, Fresh
AOSP ROMs - CM of course and MIUI (is MIUI considered an AOSP ROM?)
Kernels - Any that has SBC integrated

I'm actually running LauncherPro on top of it, and it is even smoother. Have you had a chance to check out any themes yet? I recommend the Darkness theme, it's pretty awesome.
I ran MIUI for a while, not sure if much has changed on it but it was pretty nice. Looks, functionality, and smoothness was awesome. Battery life was in between CM and Sense based rom. who knows with newer kernels and builds but thats how it went for me about two months ago
Yeah I don't know what battery life is like on Sense ROMs anymore but I always have 55-65% left every morning when I swap out batteries. If I forget to swap the battery I still make it through the second day no problem. I'm using these batteries though, and they do last a bit longer than stock.

The look is the least of the MIUI rom. The theme manager makes it very very easy to change the look of the UI.
I've been on this rom since the beginning. It has (had?) features before many Sense roms. One reason I kept going back is the controls in the pull-down screen. Then there's the file manager (ok, right now it doesn't work but 1.1.14 may fix it), the camera, the lock screen. I also like having folders to organize my apps.
I'm hoping that the Wimax on CM means MIUI can also get Wimax. It would be nice to have 4G.

How can I check it out? I'm still learning how to navigate around MIUI.
i feel like trying it, which version should i try? lol only things that dont work is 4g and hdmi?
LED's fully functional with Wimax LED Notification
version 1.1.7
Does this mean 4g is working on this version?
For those wanting to try it, official release thread here: http://miui-dev.com/forums/showthread.php?2053-New-Official-Release-Thread-1.1.7
The story with this ROM is that it is not developed for the EVO. It's officially made the for the Nexus One (I think), and we have a generous team of devs to port it over to the Evo each time the official devs release a new version (every seven days or so). Also the ROM is developed in Chinese so there's a lot of translation work to do.
1.14 was just released so those wanting to try out MIUI might want to wait a day or two for the Evo port to drop. If not, 1.7 is working great
Hello Galaxy Peeps!
I am new here on this forum, this is my first post. I have been reading a lot on this site the last couple of weeks, and have found plenty of useful and essential information for my new baby! You guys (devs and members) ROCK!
On to the subject, which is the reason why I registered so that I could start the thread.
Here is where I currently stand:
SGS2 from BELL Mobility in Montreal Canada.
**Stock ROM is UGKG2. (I am aware that this matters very little)
**GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 out of the box.
I have already experienced a little bit with upgrading the firmware via Odin to a more recent official samsung build:
RUNNING ON:
XXKH3 ROM (stock)
GINGERBREAD 2.3.4
Rooted with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4
Launcher: SPB Shell 3D (absolutely beautiful and buttery smooth!! totally worth the $15... simply the best, no doubts in my mind.)
I have never used CWM to flash an update, only used it for backing up and restoring so far. I do feel very comfortable diving in though with all that I have read here so far, and deem myself ready to try some Custom ROMS. They sound great!
The only thing holding me back is that I do not want to flash endlessly to find out which ROM is the best for me. I read up all the threads about the different ROMS, however I find it very difficult to find comparisons between them and picking the right one.
So basically I would like to start this discussion and have you guys tell us what you picked for yourself, and most importantly why you like your choice. The more details the better!
This I think would be a great help for people like me and in my situation, I know it will for sure help me tremendously.
Thanks guys, and keep informing the world about SGS2. Best device out there by far, all platforms mixed in...

So you don't think that this question/invitation for discussion hasn't been asked a gazillion times already? In all the reading you say that you've done, you haven't come across other noobs posting the same things? No? Don't believe you; you clearly haven't read enough.
My advice? Don't use your 1st ever posts like this. Use them constructively. Get a shortlist of ROMs that you feel might be appropriate for your needs and if you have questions, search the relevant ROM thread. If you can't find a suitable answer, then post your question.
In my most humble opinion, this will greatly enhance your XDA experience as you won't get upset when people continuously tell you to search or flame you for being a noob. Some XDA users can be very intolerant.
In all honesty though, unless you're looking to switch to MIUI or Cyanogen, there isn't an enormous difference between the ROMs on offer. Mainly the themes and tweaks that the chef chooses to apply, but the base ROMs are essentially very similar.
I started this post with the intention of shouting at you for being imbecilic. As I wrote though, I realised that you were fairly literate and seemingly bright so I thought I'd go easy on you instead. I'm normally not this nice.

How's everyone doing?
Thanks for the replies guy, although not entirely what I was looking for... I guess to be expected with such a noob question after all I do admit to being guilty of being a noob when it come to Android and SGS, I just got my device not so long ago, coming from Samsung Omnia (WM) for a few years. Understand guys, I am not looking to get flamed here, just for a bit of advise coming from your experiences. I do understand where you guys stand, and I am sorry if I offended anyone... it was never my goal.
So far I am LOVING my new Droid!! I may not know so much when it comes to custom ROMS, but I am learning steadily when reading the posts on this site - @Major_Sarcasm yes I do read... I appreciated still the clarity and respectfulness of you reply -.
Yesterday I ended up flashing the LeoMar75 Revolution Rom and I like it up to now. It is great and is user friendly when it comes to customizations since you can use the Revolution kitchen app to download and install MOD packages. Awesome for a noob like me! I didn't even wait for any replies because I was too excited and wanted to flash ASAP on my time off, since I had already done a lot of browsing already at work. For now I think I made the right pick, and will not try to flash a different ROM, unless someone here tells me I messed up with my choice.
Finally I know many posts have been put up already for which is the best ROM out there, but if you "read" carefully my post was not entirely about that... in fact not at all!!! I stated the fact that I didn't want to try all the available ROMS out there to make a pick (too much work too little time)... that is one thing. I never anywhere in there asked what is the best ROM to use. What I was really asking is for you guys to share which you are currently using, and the reason why you like it (features, performance, etc...) or reasons why you may not like it and may want to switch back to something else. It was intended more as a discussion than a question. As you can see I already made my choice!
Again I hope I am not offending anyone, I just want to make sure I was thoroughly understood here
Hope you guys are having a great time with your babies, I sure am!
Cheers,
Raz...
Sounds good.
I think this would be a great thread if the flaming were to be non-existent.
I personally have been using Litening rom all the while, 5.0 first then 6.1 now. Satisfied with it, but I'm someone who gets bored easily so I am thinking of switching to something else. I'm also really sick of the battery life my phone offers, hopefully flashing a different rom might improve it. (I doubt so though, lol)
My main concern now is wiping - I hear its recommended to do a full wipe before flashing to other roms. So I have to do a full backup with CWM and Titanium Backup?
Deciding between LeoMar, Cognition and CyanogenMod...
Well guess what? No one has enough time to try them all out, that's why 3 of these threads pop up every day from people like you.
The I9100 V4 Beta from China
As you are aware, Galnet MIUI Scotland, are waiting on V4 to become more stable before we started to release them. Well now might just be the time! We have recently been giving access to the Internal V4 I9100 build, and wow, is all we can say!
Firstly we can say straight away, there is no Cyanogenmod coding to be found, this includes the Kernel, everything is on top of the Samsung Framework, which means that everything works out the box!
From playing around with it for the last hour, I’ve already seen the potential for further development, and this allows for more than just a few additional tweaks, this allows for Samsung applications to be added should the user base demand it.
There is English and Chinese translations already included, only a few minor translations are required, meaning it’s far easier to maintain. The default camera is that from Samsung, and there is also Samsung Media Scanner included, which means SD reading is super fast!
Sywpe is included as a keyboard option, and from what I’ve seen and messed around with, the Music player is so sweet, MIUI have really gone to town!
The main advantage of MIUI over CM now seems to be the fact that once Samsung patches firmware issues, we can only assume that MIUI will patch it instantly, this mean no more waiting for things to be fixed, or hours of work from me trying to find where the fault is…!
Oh and one thing I really like, is MIUI have removed all the Samsung branding, meaning it truly feels like ICS with the MIUI feel we have all come to love, this truly is a gorgeous rom, and I can only praise the Chinese Developers for what they have achieved.
I will end this post by providing some screenshots, I hope you like them:

This is fantastic news! MIUI has really grown, basing it on Samsung's Framework seems like a smart plan. Really looking forward to taking my phone to the next level

Yes I think it will be hardware accelerated since they say it will based on samsung framework. Look at the camera it is the same as Samsung one.

They will use the Sammy's framework. Nothing much will differ from an user point of view imho.

I bet it will be "something" like that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1499435
Nothing from cyanogenmod = no custom kernel (unless they make one which is compatible with samsung rom) = no overclock, no cifs, no tweks, no additional governors, etc. etc.
I'd prefer the old way.

That's not correct!
As soon as Samsung releases their Kernel Source there will be Custom Kernels just like there are Coustom Kernels for Samsung based Gingerbread Roms.

Well.... There are many custom Kernel with overclock, cifs, tweaks, additional governors for Samsung gingerbread firmwares. The same will happen once the new kernel source is out.
Great news... Next week the official ICS is suppossed to be released also...
I would like to see a MIUI rom that is buggy free that bassed on ICS ! I think I'm going to be the first who will try it
I have created this thread in order to my personal review on the GingerZaraki ROM on top of the alfs v08a/v09a kernel for CM7. I have had experiences with many ROMs and have decided to review the one I am currently running on my device. Before I begin, I have to mention that, although there maybe other reviews every one is opinionated or 'spiced' differently. I think it is valid that there will be more than one review of the same ROM.
If you have ANY suggestions, please leave them as a post below.
This review will be on the latest version of the ROM - v08.
XDA renowned ROM author RohinZaraki - along with his team - rolled out his first ever ROM: GingerZaraki on the 18th May 2012. Seeing as a track record was in-existent, many users summoned their fiery mists of doubt. But after reading further, these mists were quickly extinguished. After using the ROM for quite a while, there is no doubt that it is a clear contender for ROTC (ROM of the century). I will cover various areas in which the ROM amazed me and some where the ROM may have disappointed me.
Visuals
TeamZaraki has obviously pulled all the stocks out making a flawlessly beautiful ROM. With many talented themers in the team, the ROM offers bold icons revolutionizing the classic gingerbread 2.3.7 look. The team have also modernized the x8 adding the Xperia Ice theme seen on many of the newer breeds of Xperia devices. Overall, the Zaraki team has done a great job - one would forget that the android base was the old gingerbread if not for the version in settings.
Kernel
If you have any problems with performance on the x8 I can assure you that the alfs v08a/v09a will annihilate any problems you had. Blasting out an Antutu total score of around 2500, you will see a great increase in basic speeds on your device. Again, with a custom kernel, you will be given the ability to overclock and undervolt. I can personally recommend scaling to about 729mhz. The battery performance seemed to be a bit of a letdown though. I was getting one day of heavy use and two days of moderate use. This was a considerable decrease from the ICS ROM I was using previously. However, with much consideration, this may just be a sacrifice for all that extra umph! Also, seeing as you have to install a custom kernel, you must have an unlocked boot loader which is a brick wall for many users. Fortunately, many variants of the same ROM were created in order to allow stock users to enjoy Zaraki as well. I do think that users will have to muscle up seeing as the stock kernel is a brick wall for developers trying to port gingerbread+.
Firmware
Gingerbread is like the Windows XP of Android. It is debatably the ultimate android operating system. With that said, I think many crave a higher OS even though it may be beyond the x8's capabilities. A possible suggestion for a next version would be to build the ROM upon a port of jellybean. JellyZaraki? The ICS platfroms will be too slow to really be a deserving update to the series.
Side Note
Even though this is nothing to do with the ROM itself I think it deserves note. RohinZaraki has offered a multitude of tips, troubleshooting guides and screenshots with the thread supporting the ROM. I think that the effort has to be applauded even if it is done in a small senior member post.
Conclusion
I believe that the experience provided by GingerZaraki is one that will set very high expectations for ROMs to come. But with producers like TeamZaraki I have no doubt that the bar will be raised with every release. I do not believe one thread is enough to highlight all that is good with the release but I will take the opportunity to thank Rohin and all the team for the release on behalf of the x8 community.
Rating: 9 out of 10
I have spent quite some time typing this review, please do not troll. All suggestions on the other hand are more than welcome. Please hit 'thanks' if you appreciate my massive effort. Sorry if this is not something you wanted. Even though the guide is long, I call it mini because it does not cover everything.
Special Thanks to RohinZakari and all the guys at TeamZaraki. (Chris95X8, SpyderX, nazz.rule, lucastan96, AckeflyRzyle, Lloir)

I have a suggestion Deftone. Why dont you just make 1 thread for all your upcoming review? Like we say its Xperia X8 ROM Review, I know there is already a thread like that but yours ofcourse is different and more infos.. Lets say you have 10 ROMs to review user, more likely will not see your past reviews if those new thread piled up. Another thing if its for RC, all of your reviews will be counted as one even though you created 20 reviews. IMO
Keep it up

Thanks for your suggestion. But I do not want to pile all of my review into one thread. I know that it will be neater but this will respawn the massive issue of too long didn't read. I would like my reviews to be considered as individual editions, like magazines. It will be easier for me to manage as well.
However, I could create one thread That i keep updating with links to all my reviews. And then put a link to that thread in every new review I create. This will solve the two problems you mentioned. Think of it as creating a review network.
I do not really care about RC - if I get it I will be extatic but it seems like it will be a long time before that happens. As long as I serve the XDA community to the max, I am fine.
Good idea but you haven't actually given a review of the rom, or is that coming?
This is more of a history of the rom.

A review is giving your opinion of something in a professional climate. I think I did that. I also think you just read the introduction paragraphs. Any further suggestions, just say. Don't ever feel like I will troll you or anything. I am just here to help.

EDIT: I read the link you provided CtrlAltDellrl. This is in a lot of detail I label my reviews mini because I will not go into that much detail. I just break my review into parts using subheadings so people can skip through it easily. Sorry That I let you down with my review. How about check out my other one of the minicm9 ROM. Tell me what you think. Still a history.
In addition to this, I said the bold icons revolutionize gingerbread. This in itself is a review seeing as I am giving my opinion about a part of the ROM.
Here is my other review. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845638 You sound like you could help me a lot. Sorry for the .gif under the show content. But I was itching.
This is what I "expect" when I read a review..
Cheers..
