Phone keeps rebooting - Focus General

Pretty much anytime I try to use YouTube, or play a game, or just do almost anything except Phone/Text/Internet... my phone will stop what it is doing a do a full reboot. It's really getting on my nerves now.
There are some other forum discussions out there on this, but they are all with Android devices in which people have rooted their phone and messed something up themselves. For a completely stock, non jacked around Focus... does anyone have any idea what is causing this?
Does this just sound like a defect Samsung will have to deal with directly?

I had and HTC HD7 that did that (re-boot) constantly. I was lucky enough to flash it with a clean rom and everything worked perfect.
Unfortunately there are no roms for the Focus, so take it back for exchange/refund or some kind of swap under warranty.

This problem happens to me, but that's only because I have a 32 GB SD card in. Are you sure you didn't put an SD card in your Focus?

No SD card for me. I really don't have a lot of music or pictures on my phone so the stock memory is fine with me. It stopped doing it this last weekend so I may have lucked out.
I actually swapped my old Captivate with someone back in December yo get this phone, so getting it exchanged or using the warranty is probably not an option. Ugh.

Wow, so I replied too soon. It's doing it again while I'm trying to use Netflix. AARRRRRRR

With no intent to offend, are you sure there is no card installed in the MicroSD slot under the back cover? You have actually taken off the back cover and looked at the empty SD card slot? I ask because you say you swapped someone for it, so maybe they installed the card before you got it.
If not, have you tried a hard reset?

Ya.... try doing the three finger reset if you already haven't done so. And yes, check that memory slot. Who knows even if they put a 4GB card in there, it still might not be working properly.

No offense taken! I just confirmed there is no memory card inside.
Won't the 3 finger reset automatically format my phone? Do I need to sync with my Zune before I do this to ensure all of my pictures and internal data isn't lost?

yes, sync with zune to save your photos and videos, Windows Live will save your calendar settings and contacts, and you'll have to reinstall your apps. You will lose any saved text conversations.

So my phone reset this weekend after trying to take a picture, and is now executing an infinite reboot cycle on the Samsung logo. I can't even do the 3 finger salute to re-format and start from scratch! No SD card fyi.
Has anyone tried sending their phone back to Samsung Repair center. Since the phone hasn't even been out for a year they said it would most likely be covered under manufacturers warranty, however they said I would need to provide a receipt, but since it was a gift from a family member all I have is the original box. They didn't keep the receipt (it was purchased online).
Just curious if someone else has had a similar issue. I figured taking it to an AT&T store will do me no good since Managers bonuses are directly tied to any replacements or damaged goods they take back if it wasn't purchased in their store.

did you guys figure out a solution to this? my phone keeps restarting now... at least 20 times a day!!! this is ridiculuous!! i bought this one last november and i'm pretty sure it's too late to complain.
what did you guys end up doing?

I am sorry to tell you this, but I had to buy a new phone. I discovered that one of the three golden battery contacts was bent. Tried everyone with no luck.

[Q] HELP: 15mb storage, hard resets, no results, one month no phone!

Hey I put up a post and no one seems to be able to help me curious if you can:
I put a 32gb micro sd card class 2 sandisk into a samsung focus and it is now stuck on 15mb memory (not a new problem to this forums).
Everyone's solution on this forum is to reset the phone and start over, however its been a month now and no single reset has changed the phone from 15mb back to 8gb. There are no at&t apps either the phone is bare and can only make calls pretty much.
I have done both resets in many combinations of plugged and not plugged in. I have done the 3 button reset and the menu reset. Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated?
you never did mention if you took the card out...
well the card is out now, i originally tried to reformat every which way with the card in now it is removed. Any other questions that might help? any suggestions?
Would jailbreaking the phone help reset it? can it be jailbreaked in that state? and how the hell do you jailbreak ha?
well now that the card is out do the vol down, camera, power format....
i have done that alot and no result. Am i missing something about reseting?
I have done the 3 button format, about menu format, and also long press on the power button. I have done these in many combinations to no avail.
Is the phone complete garbage? Can i get it replaced by samsung?
Your phone is toast. This is what happened to me when I tried using a 32GB Class 2 Sandisk card. If you bought yours from AT&T or whatever, you should be able to walk in, show them the phone is bricked, and get a replacement. I'm not sure how it will play out if you bought it through other means.
what about buying a new one and returning few days later the broken one, will they know its a different phone?
I'm not sure, but why wouldn't you bring it in? You should be reasonably covered, support-wise. They have no way of knowing that you used a card.

yes they track the phones by the s/n and the imei.
i would bring the phone in, but i bought it through 3rd party dealer and i got my money back for the phone, but still have the broken phone and it would be great to fix it and have it for free.
Any way to get phone replaced by at&t? even if i have to pay does that kind of service exist?

Focus resets itself on powerup

I travel quite often so I have to power my phone off and on frequently. Today when I landed in the Philippines and powered my phone on the phone reset itself with what appears to be a hard reset. Everything is new. I have to reconfigure my email and such. All of my photos are gone etc. When I re synched over the air with Windows live, My contacts returned as expected, but then I had to turn off my phone for the next flight and the phone reset itself the next time it was powered on. I seems that every time I power the phone back on it is hard resetting? Any ideas? This is a huge pain obviously and I am really mad about losing my text messages and saved photos, not to mention the pain of re applying apps and such.
FYI, I have no MicroSD in the drive.
i got the same with my samsung focus idk whats with that. but you applied that you dont have a sd card an i have a 8gb sd in mines and they said thats probably why mines reset but i believe the update that came out yesterday should help with the stabiliby of the software.
Official Update left microsoft: March 24, 2011
(NO OFFICIAL DATE YET ON WHEN INDIVUAL PHONE COMPANIES WILL SEND THEM OUT)
What I had originally thought was a problem only on powerup now seems to be a general memory problem. The phone now no longer maintains call logs and will not completely sync claiming it does not have enough memory. Error Code: 80070070. It wants me to free up memory by deleting items which it deleted itself on powerup.
I also cannot sync to Zune anymore to reload any apps or such. Very strange. Unfortunately I think that this will end up being exchanged at att wireless which will probably result in my being given a refurb. I LOVE my Focus. It has been hard to watch it die over the last week.

There are 3 different ways to hard reset/format the phone. Try all of them until you see the all 8GB back. I know I have to format 2 or 3 times when mine suffered the exact same problem (I blame the microSD card). Since you don't have any SD card, it seems this is an Focus issue regardless microSD or not.
I had an HTC HD 7 that did the same thing. It would reboot and it would be back to factory settings. I was lucky enough that a ROM was available so I re-flashed the phone and everything worked perfect. I think you will be hard pressed to find an available ROM for the Focus, so best to exchange it for a new one.
I called att tech support and they did the standard walk me through troubleshooting. I did a software hard reset and a hardware hard reset (Camera button, volume down and power) In the end after resetting the phone froze on the Samsung boot screen. They sent me to an att wireless store to try a new battery. In the end att warranty services declared that the phone was dead and is mailing me a new (refurb) phone. Bummer. I loved my phone, but something killed it that I cannot identify. That calls for a little concern, but I'll chalk this up as a one time if the new phone has no issues.
Hate to break it to you but me (along with many others) have had this problem with the Focus where it just gets stuck on the Samsung boot screen.
Unfortunately, the cause is still unknown so it can affect basically anyone. And there is no fix for it yet (besides an exchange) so people outside the US who own the Focus are simply out of luck.

I'd strongly recommend against ppl purchase Samsung phones that they can't get warranty service locally. Samsung Phone's build quality is lousy. Your chances of need the warranty service is very high. I owned 5 Samsung phones, half of them had problems. Some I just live with them (like the broken GPS on my Captivate). Some I have to swap it out with AT&T warranty services (one with known antenna separation issue and one with a broken chagre port after a few months, also a known issue for that phone).

Running Mango on the Surround

I just followed the instructions here.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the results. Angry birds is a bit choppy and the 16 bit color still exists. Post here if there are any issues specific to the Surround.
It's actually smooth for a beta . I'm let down with the whole wp7 thing still tho.
Everything worked fantastically (well as good as could be expected for beta software at least) for a day and a half until the device auto-rebooted and is now permanently stuck on the white HTC screen. Whether this was caused by the Mango beta or it was just coincidence I'm not really sure as this screen error usually occurs from an SD card error from what I understand. All part of the game with installing beta software right?
hey lostinbeta,
I had the same issue as u did, i updated my ohone to mango and it worked for 3 days until it randomly rebooted and got stuck at the htc screen, i tried flashing a ROM for OS 7004 and also tried retoring it through the zune software, it restarted my phone and for the next 3 hrs my phone was still on the HTC screen and zune did not throw any error and was still continuing a never ending restoration, pls pls pls help me , thanx in advance

I wish I could help, but I could never get my surround working again. I considered it hard bricked and went back to my captivate. I never called HTC about it though, so you can try to see if you can send it in for repair if its still under warranty. No guarantees they wont catch why it happened and refuse warranty service and charge you though.
Did you try to install RSPL/HSPL then install stock ROM?

I did. It just hangs at the white HTC screen forever (well til the battery dies lol) the only thing i haven't tried was changing the sd card inside the phone, but that's because I don't have a spare one and if it was a big enough deal I could just trying sending it into warranty to see if they will fix it for free instead of buying a new card.
Edit: I should say that I did not install an HSPL, but I flashed the official signed stock rom without a hitch.
Fwiw, I have had this happen on one occasion on the original 7004 build. I was able to get it working again, but not before I reflashed. The best you can hope for is to return the device and get a warranty replacement if flashing didn't do the trick.
problems with being stuck at logo screen
Hello All,
I bought my surround used (only 3 months old) and a month later it re-booted several times and finally ended stuck on the logo screen. Tried different methods of reviving the phone listed on here.... called att about warranty, they wouldnt warranty the phone because they said it had 3 sim registered to it, they said good luck but we are not going to help you. called htc and they had me send it in, couple days later, got a call saying water damage and it would be 170US and shipping for the repair. I had them send it back because i wasnt going to spend anymore money on it.
3 months later...
I opened up the phone last night and removed the internal micro sd card, left the slot empty and did a hard reset. viola... it booted up. Now, i was limited because there was no (at least not very much) memory available for photos, apps, or anything else, but the phone worked for calling
Went to the local walmart and purchased a sandisk class4 16GB card for about 30US. Opened the phone back up and installed the sd card and did another hard reset. Phone booted and I checked the memory, around 14.xxGB free after format. I have made 2 updates from zune, installed several apps, texted, called and sync some zune data, setup my gmail acct and sync'd my contacts. Phone has been working great, only 2 days but I think HTC has put in a bad bunch of micro sd cards in these phones because many people have had the same problem.
I just wanted to share this in case anyone has had the same problem. I am lucky as I had the torx and small phillips head drivers to dis-assemble the device.
Hope this helps. -thejaxster

SD card notifications is a hardware issue

I did some testing today and it appears that the SD card issue regarding the notifications we've been getting is a hardware issue and cannot be fixed through OTA's.
All day long while I was sitting at my desk with my phone laying flat, I did not get the notifications but as soon as I left the house and put the phone in my pocket, I got my first SD card notification.
I can now recreate the notification every time by turning my phone upside down and slightly tapping my finger where the SD card sits.
I'll probably just wait until Samsung fixes this and then warranty it through Tmobile. They've never gave me problems when it comes to shipping replacement phones.

Yep, its an issue with the sim card tray hopefully.
If it is i imagine theyll just ship out new ones to affected people. Dont want to have to return the whole thing if possible
I haven't got a single notification about my SD Card except for the first time after my phone boots up.

which is why you wait till all the defects on the 1st batches are sorted out
Yes its officially an hardware issue
I have had the same issue non-stop for a while. I did everything mentioned here without any exception. Its not only the notification. Its also when you are listening music and checking photos from your external SD card that the device suddenly stop responding. I have a friend who work for Samsung Canada and he is in a "high level position". They have been aware of the issue since March 11. All their first shipments (their first batch) has this issue. And they quickly worked on it for the second build. However, we don't exactly know when this second build will be on the shelves (they may already be or not). Sometimes, it takes months. Because they had a lot made before the launch. And they will pass all of those before going to the second batch with the fix. Its an hardware issue officially. Sad but we got a lemon. We are now stuck with it. I would certainly be more than happy to flag this on Twitter, Facebook, everywhere possible. Where is the facebook page to complain.
I guess I'm lucky then. I don't get SD card notifications.
I am a journalist in the tech field
And BTW, I've spoke to Samsung Canada for 2 hours with a supervisor and they will not admit this is a problem so no they will not ship new devices to affected people. As I have commented on my last post, I know from from a trusted source at Samsung (high level employee) that it is a hardware issue and that it will be fixed with new batch. However, he did not know when this new batch would be on the shelves. This could take months as they will sale the first batch first. Samsung Canada will not acknowledge and will not give people other devices.
I had that on my first S7 edge...2 replacements later the problem was gone...
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
I preoredred from samsung and got my s7 edge on 8th of march and have no sd card issues. I have samsung 64gb pro micro sd card.
I only get it right after a reboot and that's it...
Please note that this can go away for a few days but will come back. No matter what you do (hard reset = I did 8 times), 2 micro SD, one Sandish and one Samsung = same problem. Unfortunately, it is a hardware issue. If I were you, I would protect my phone with a case and screen protector (to ensure to keep full warranty of the device) and wait a few months to get a phone from a new batch. I have a friend who works at Samsung Canada and he anonymously told me that this is a known issue by Samsung who will not admit it and they will still sale the batch that was previously build with this issue. Once they get new batch, this will be fixed. Also, my assumption is that the issue will get worse overtime (sun, cold, bending, pockets, etc). Good luck.
what's the problem?
SD card notifications? what notifications does the SD card give? I only encountered the reformat it on first insert and every time I reboot.

The problem is more than the notification use your SD. Listen to music for a while and at the same time access your pictures on the SD. It may not do it for a while, but it will eventually. Everything will freeze (no SD recognized) until you restart the phone. I have 6 friends who bought the phone and it did eventually do it. I did reformat and hard reset, and every possible steps 8 times and it does come back.

The notification when you reboot the phone is totally normal. What is not, it's the random eject when you use the SD content. Some people have better device than others. I had pre ordered mine. Your 5 days purchase may be in the new batch. I don't know this for sure though.

Inserting any SD card causes bootloop....

I've done some searching but not come up with any definitive answers....
Lately my phone(SM-G930V) has taken to bootlooping and heating up at random times...
This morning (4-4-18) it took a security update (G930VVRU4BRC2) and became completely unstable...
I tried everything...finally resorting to a full factory wipe and reset.
Still looping.
The SD card has been in it since day one (Feb 2016) it is a Sandisk 32gB...
On a whim I removed the SD card and the phone returned to normal.
I experimented with (4) other SD cards of varying brand and capacity and every single one threw the phone into a constant loop.
Obviously something bad has happened inside the phone with regards to the SD slot or how it reads it...
Just wondering if this is a known issue and if there might be any resolution ?
Thanks, Dan
I had a similar issue yesterday. To be honest I fixed it by flashing the att fw onto my verizon phone for oreo and then using adb to upgrade my phone to oreo. Now my phone is super stable and hauls ass. Jesus I love oreo.
I followed this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s7/help/android-oreo8-0-verizon-s7-t3750452 when you go the guide page, do the method without the SD card.
BE WARNED it takes a LONNNNNGGGGGGGGG time to update. Took me probably 1-2 hours.
Im using a verizon phone with an att sim card so I didn't have any issues with the setup wizard. I heard some people on verizon having issues though, they fixed it by removing their sim card during the wizard after they pushed start.
Only thing I did different was used regular odin. You can try either though.
My phone is running superb now.
Scary thing is...this morning...it started looping again...
No SD card inserted at all...
I removed the tray and cleaned the SIM card with a pencil eraser (made the contacts nice and shiny) and it hasn't looped in almost an hour.
I'll look into reinstalling the firmware and upgrading to Oreo...
Been waiting for the update to come through normally...but hey...what ever it takes..
Dan
Worked for me man. Give it a shot. Like I said, Oreo is running flawlessly on my phone too. The phone is so snappy now.

I don't want to alarm you, but first off, how old is the phone? Was it brand new when you got it or is it a used or refurbished phone? The reason I ask is because my previous phone I had, an LG G3, lasted 2 years. Right after my contract ended (non-payment plan at the time), it started exhibiting issues stating that the SD card has been ejected and then minutes later, the SD has been inserted. This would happen with any SD card. I eventually had to use the phone without the SD card and I flashed back to various previous images, custom ROMs, etc. No matter what I did, eventually the SD card would eject itself for some reason and then reinsert it self (it wasn't really ejecting but the phone thought I had removed it).
Turns out, it was a hardware failure in the phone. Eventually, one evening I was using it and the entire screen went black. Hooking it up to my PC resulted in nothing. It was dead. So, I don't want to alarm you, but this could be the precursor to a hardware failure going on in your phone depending on how old it is, etc. Hence my questions as to how old it was, and whether it was used or refurbished.
Might be time for a new phone. If it's fairly new and under warranty, you might want to swap it out (which usually results in getting a refurbished unfortunately), but you never know. You could always take into a repair shop and have them run some diagnostics on it as well.
Hopefully it's just something wonky with your software and a reimage fixes the issue. I've had mine for almost 1.5 years and so far, it's been running great. I've never rooted it or anything because for me, it does all that I need and performs well. First phone I've had (other than my G3) where I haven't had to root it or flash a custom ROM. For me, it works great, but I know that's not the case for everyone.
