Well after reading through the forums and seeing a lot of the threads I thought I was going to regret buying the Leo. I got it a week ago on Tmobile for £20 a month and it cost £31 for the device. A lot cheaper than getting an iphone.
Basically none of my fears have been realised. The keyboard worries were sorted by switching to Swype, which is truly amazing. The SMS problems I never had really because I changed to ROM 1.61 early on via Goldcard. The battery life seems fine to me for such a high specced device with a huge screen. That screen is amazing. The size is immense, I love it. The sensitivity is incredible and was something that I always longed for since coming across the iphone. The phone is big but thin and I don't even notice it in my pocket.
HTC Sense is really good. Not perfect but way better than a lot of reviewers would have you believe. I've come across a few things that have bugged me but so far I have managed to find something on this forum to overcome them all. The only thing that still hasn't been sorted is the pink hue to the camera and the inability to control the bluetooth volume on the handset. But these are liveable with.
I should add that I came from an HTC Kaiser and maybe I am a bit jaded because I grew to love that device despite the frequent need for reboots and the many limitations (the whole hardware acceleration debacle). I love customising my phones and overcoming the problems and xda-developers is surely one of the best resources ever. This site really makes owning a windows mobile phone a pleasure. TBH If it didn't exist I don't think windows mobile would still exist.
Anyway I am convinced that the Leo/HD2 is by far the best phone on the market by a long way.
Its nice to read positive threads, Im getting mine tomorrow and hope I have the same experience Mines on Tmobile too so I hope I dont get the sms problems, however Im just gonna go to the 1.48 ROM as Im waiting for a hardspl.
Merry Christmas
By far the best phone experience I've had.
Of course there's a few issues like getting use to ultra sensitive qwerty and a red camera (installed hotfix, tinge is still there though improved slightly). But most of my qualms are with vodafone who won't issue a like for like replacement if the phone gets damaged or won't allow any new rom upgrades.
Still. Loving it!
Hi.
I have my hd2 for about 3 months now and i really like it, but this morning on my way to work my phone died. Screen went black while i was browsing the net. I restarted it but phone is stuck on tmobile stick together splash screen. I was still rocking original tmous rom, so I called customer service and they told me that they will ship me a new one and also that i will have another 14 day trial period with it. So basically i can return this phone and pick another one. one of my friends got vibrant yesterday and i spent some time playing with it and phone seems to be pretty nice as well plus it runs android and since my last phone was g1 i am kinda used to it. Thing is i dont really like samsung phones as i had some bad experience with them in the past, so my question is, would You change your hd2 for vibrant if you had the opportunity? if yes please explain why.
I just saw it at the store about 30 minutes ago. I will say this, while being a nice phone, the avatar demo movie playing on it was chopping up and glitching a bunch. Not sure if thats the phone, or the player but video on the HD2 played way smoother and cleaner. Other then that I couldn't tell you anything. And your answer from me would be, HELL NO!! The HD2 just has too much going for it compared to everyother phone. Look at the rate of progress they are deving android for it! Near the speed of light. I could see droid being your stable OS on the HD2 in under 1 month.
The vibrant is a great phone, but not perfect either. I think in this case once again the choice just comes down to whether you get along better with Android or WM.
But, keep in mind that you'll likely never find a WM version ported to the Vibrant, where as the HD2 has several Android builds that are mostly working on it right now, and a fully-functional version should happen before very long.
i use both phones. the hd2, primarily for work and the vibrant as my "daily driver". both phones have some setbacks. with the hd2, my biggest complaint, on the latest stock rom, has been lagging and freezing during and after sending sms and mms. i usually have to soft reset my phone during these cases.
however, i am sure flashing of some custom roms should solve this issue but i have not had the time to do so. overall, i love the build quality of the hd2 and its gorgeous 4.3" display. i'm also running a dual boot of the latest android froyo port on it and it almost runs as smooth as the android os on my vibrant.
my biggest gripes about the vibrant is its overall build quality. it's pretty much plastic all over and very lightweight. there are some creaks during vibration.
while this might be a setback it's also one of the phone's strengths. some times i forget that it's in my pocket. it's very portable/pocketable and slim. bear in mind, it's screen is 4", not that much smaller than the hd2's. also its weight literally feels like a feather vs. the weight of the hd2.
my other complaint about the vibrant is the TouchWiz skinned interface. it looks a lot like the iphone. heck, the overall look of the phone looks like the iphone 3gs. however, i soon got over that that by installing some home theme replacement apps/ui such as Launcher Pro and ADW launder free from the android market. these themed UI apps look just like vanilla froyo roms and actually run smoother then the touchwiz theme.
Overall, the vibrant is seems to run a lot smoother, quicker v. the hd2 in terms of app launching and scrolling, screen transitioning, and gaming. furthermore, texting is great. no lags nor freezes and the included swype keyboard trumps the one provided by the hd2. no lags, delays, etc whatsoever. however, there are some lags and glitches here and there when running a number of apps or when using the android market. just like the hd2 and the winmo OS, there are task killers that you can download from the android market place. and let's not forget the beautiful and vibrant (yes, tmobile got it right with this nickname) the screen is. i literally have the brightness set at 0 and it's still stands out a bit vs. my hd2 set at about 20 pct to save battery. honestly, i've never seen a smartphone reproduce such colors in terms of watching movies like avatar so vividly. i'd say it's almost on par with the beautiful display of the iphone 4.
if you decide to purchase the vibrant, make use of the 14 day return period. make use of the android market and look in to this website, xda and see what the vibrant is capable of. rooting is SUPER easy on this phone and a froyo build should be coming out soon from team cyanogen (i.e. wes garner). The official OTA on android 2.2 will likely be out by the end of September for this phone as well.
I had an Android phone for about 18 months, and I've had my HD2 for about 4...
I love the HD2. Best phone I've ever had. The G1 was cool when it came out, and I was impressed initally, but it only took a week or so before it started to get "buggy". Once I rooted it, nothing imporved and I was constantly out of touch for hours at a time due to booting, wiping, flashing, etc...
HD2 totally different story. Say what you will about Windows Mobile 6.5, but it is very customizable and powerful, capable of many great feats. Not nearly as proprietary as iPhone or the upcoming WP7. And as of now as far as I know Microsoft is on record as stating they will be supporting and upgrading 6.5 for the next two years at least even though WP7 will be out.
The HD2 is very quick. The stock Opera browser, while not having native flash is very quick to load full media-rich pages. Having Office 2010 preloaded is a big plus for me, also.
I play the Ferrari GT Evolution game all the time, and since I got a class 6 SD Card, there is very little lag or stutter at all, graphics are very imressive. I know the Vibrant has a better screen but I think the HD2's is good enough to where this would not be considered a "deal breaker" (like not having a freakin' flash on your top model phone, I mean, come on, Samsung, is everyone there shooting meth?).
I have not had any problems with MMS, Text, or Facebook or Twitter on my HD2. All run very smoothly. I have 5 email accounts up and synching nicely.
As far as watching movies, if you have to run them side by side to tell the difference, again, I file it in the "not a dealbreaker" category. All I know is I can watch True Blood in H264 just fine on my HD2 and not even use 35% of the battery.
Battery life on the HD2 for me seems to be about a full day, plus a half if not having wifi on all the time.
People complain about the size but I love it. I like having a big, solidly-built smartphone that I know is sitting in my pocket and not going anywhere.
Anyway, I haven't played with the Vibrant yet so I can't do a comparison, but the flash for me is a big one, because I use the camera on my HD2 constantly. But my advice would be not to write off the HD2 just because of everything you hear about it. Give it a shot. It's a great phone.
Hope that helps.
to be fair, the op was asking about the vibrant. i also have a rooted g1 and i'd have to say the vibrant murders the g1 in every aspect. i have not rooted the vibrant out of the box because of how much internal memory it has (16 gb) and its blazing speed.

To be accurate, they were asking if anyone would trade their HD2 for the Vibrant. I simply wanted to have an opportunity to let the OP know that his HD2 experience may be the exception rather than the norm, and to familiarize himself with how to use the device instead of simply giving up on it.
Thx for the replys.
I decided to stick with hd2. I flashed a custom rom same day i got my replacement and it really improved speed of the phone and everything work as smooth as i expected. On top of that im runing darkstone's froyo now and im loving it.

Seems that as of the past couple of weeks, touch screen failure has become a very common problem. This is is something that is being evidenced by the amount of chatter about it here, and also by my conversations with various T-Mobile representatives in getting my own phone fixed. In the past couple of weeks, we've seen a lot of development on the HD2...Android NAND, WP7, etc etc etc. I'm wondering if these hacked OS's could be the culprit somehow, and if any one in particular is the primary culprit. Anyway, I was thinking a poll might help shed some light on this.
Edit: If you're dual booting at all, indicate which OS you're using primarily.
Interesting thread, i myself have not long had my hd2 and is currently rockin the original wm 6.5. No touchscreen issues....As Of Yet, But i am slightly worried that it will eventually happen i am seeing more and more of these type of threads pop up here and other forums where people are having these touchscreen failure issues, and is quite disconcerting to new users of the device.
I have no idea if flashing the device has anything to do with such issues or indeed specifically nand/android is at fault, tho i guess i can see why some would think it...But also have to remember touchscreens do fail on many devices using stock OS.
What is strange is there seems to be a large influx of posts/threads reguarding this matter over the last few weeks which is odd, i mean does a phones touchscreen or hardware on the MB have a shelf life from the manufacture stage, Or is it just coincidental?

I don't think touch screen failure is too common on other devices actually....ie my wife has been using an iPhone 2g for more than three years now, and although the screen has been cracked for most of that time, the digitizer/touch screen is working fine.
I too am finding it a little odd that the frequency of this occurring has ramped up in the past couple of weeks. I'm wondering if any OS in particular is culprit, or if its a matter of how old the phone is, as the TMOUSA version was released close to a year ago.
No issues whatsoever, simply using Android in NAND.
However, I've only ever flashed by phone no more than 15 times (this is probably a huge overstatement), including my current Android flash.
I flashed my phone over 100 times, tried everything, have my phone for almost a year now, and it's still superresponsive, but I always guard it with my life nothing ever comes close to it hehe.
I've had my hd2 for over a year. I've noticed touchscreen problems from day 1. Also with 6.5. Mostly just with certain games tho like throttle copter. It's actually better since i switched to nand android. It could just be the apps is what i'm saying

Ye, good call on the 2g iphone...Iv also got the old 2g which i mainly use as an alarm clock now haha. But the last couple of years with it has shown no issues at all with the touchscreen, a bit scratchd up but pretty solid otherwise
My HD2's touch screen suddenly stopped responding after ending up one call. After that I rebooted, still screen didn't responded.
I removed battery for a min and then boot up. This time touch was working properly.
Again after few hours touch stopped responding and it never came back. I tried to hard reset/reflash stock os but no luck.
I suspect its a hardware issue and nothing to do with OS running on it. I just sent mine to HTC service center yesterday.. Waiting to get it fixed.
Although I was running WM6.5.x as main OS and Android from SD card (used to play games ). I guess it's nothing to do with software, I'm just unlucky to get faulty hardware.
Okay so right now I'm using the evo shift but I'm about to switch to cincinatibell and was thinking of getting a hd2 because I'm an obessive flasher but I was wondering is the phone fast? Like my evo I've herd rumors that the speed is rediculously good like just as good as my shift I don't actually know how true that is what kinda changes would I be looking at if I did this would it be worth it I mean honestly is it as beast as the rumors I've heard or is it a p.o.s and I should concider a different phone

Is it worth it ? depends on what it costs & what other device options are on offer.
HD2 is good for a cheap price, plenty of fun for a flashing junkie.
Downsides are: 1100Mah battery, no TV out, screen & motherboard issues are too common, sound quality is not the best, device can get hot very quickly.
I got my T-Mob version cheap but if paying close to full price it is out classed by other options.
1230 mAh battery, not 1100.
It's a good buy for a flashing junkie. And yeah, it's fast. It's the best Windows Mobile device and very good and fast Android/WP7 device. Of course there are faster and newer (and more expensive and not capable of multi OS), but there are also tons of slower devices.
Mister B pointed out downsides so... yeah, that's pretty it.
It would definitely satisy for disorder. On the note on whether it is fast. Yes it is fast, however your evo 3d should be a bit snappier.
To be honest, you won't find another phone with all these opportunities like the HD2, so if it's a ride you're looking for, this will give you one hell of a.
In terms of the best performance, you should look else where I suppose.
So its a great phone but like all phones has its issues (undrstandable) so aslong as I get it cheap then yes its worth it if not then find something else gotcha thanks every1 you helped me and I think I will be joining your community very soon jw is the android fully functional? And is it swype compatible?
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Swype is fully functional and Android, well, that depends on the ROM you pick. But on the whole, Android works very well on the HD2 (as does WP7 too).
I am on my second HD2, the first one being stolen after 6 months. I didn't want any other phone as a replacement. It HAD to be another HD2. For me, it's the best phone I have ever had and the most versatile that has ever been built. For a flash-junkie, it has to be the best phone in the world! Android either via SD or NAND, WP7 NAND, Ubuntu and Meego (the latter still rather wobbly) and of course WinMo 6.5 factory installed. You can still get them new via Amazon and co, but expect to pay about €450 - not cheap for a phone that is over 18 months on the market. Just goes to show that it is still a desirable piece of kit
seeing as you said your a flash junky like most of us here than def go for it. i barely got mine thursday after school and im coming from a captivate and you would have to be doing some really intensive stuff to see any lag what so ever and since your coming from a evo shift there really isnt much of a difference between it and the hd2 plus you can dual boot!!!!
not worth every cent (hryvnia) i paid.
i keed, i keed =P
Many good quality used ones from $200 - $250. Well worth it. This is the only handset I need till SGSII hits TMOUS.
And yes they can be fast with the Android ROMs

HD2 is a very nice phone. If you want to try different operating systems, it's the only choice. If you already know what you want, choose a new one with native operating system of your choice, if possible, dual core.
Used phone seems to be a very good choice nowadays, because people update their phones much too often.
It's awesome, I've switched to HD7, Vibrant and Nexus 1, and the HD2 buries them all in terms of flexibility, power and is a very well constructed device, glass and metal. I don't understand why folk say Evo has more power, isn't it the same hardware wise? The new 2ghz phones aren't valid yet as I read
most app's don't utilize the processor...besides, you know once you buy virtually any other phone, it will be stuck on gingerbread and have far less roms than XDA has for the HD2...
I love my HD2 and will for a long time coming..
Correction, they don't utilize the full power of the processor. Meaning whilst its not operating both cores, both are still being used, just one is a helper.

Very well said, I will hold onto mine until it completely dies. Then I eill still try to fix it if repair parts are still avaliable.
At the OP, the HD2 is the beast you have read about. The HD2 falls short of nothing except maybe undo able hardware mods like no font facing camera and no TV out. It can handle almost anything you throw at it software wize and hang right in there with the native devices of what ever OS you use with it. I would dare say ot was the introduction device and is the intruduction device for several people who knew nothing ofcthe mobile development community and giving some pretty awsome crash courses. I am ome myself, now I know a good bit about Windows Mobile, learning like a ton about Android right now, and will try Windows Phone 7 eventually. I use Android for my daily driver now. I do not think my life would be the same without my HD2 now.
Much as I like my hd2, there are a couple of drawbacks: 65k dual touch screen & shonky GPS. Battery could be bigger too, but that goes for most androids.

I just started using the HD2 with Android and I'm blown away. My house mate wants to swap his iphone 4. I love the voice commands with google. Swype is amazing. I've used the Navigation feature which worked right away. It seems like there is nothing the phone can't do, coming from a Blackberry perspective.
I find that the phone is very fast.
i own an hd2. i tried the stock rom, customized stock rom, and 2 android builds. as for android, the cam and camcorder suck, theyre not asd sharp as on the stock rom. battery on droid sucks too. and call quality is very bad.
on a customized rom, the call quality sucks, cam is horrible, and batt drains a lot, but it does look good. and this is what i dont understand. why is fluff taken out of a custom rom then its cam and batt suck?
on the stock rom, batt is better than custom rom and android. call quality sucks but a patch can reduce the static greatly. everything else works sharply and perfect. but, it lacks apps.. and this is what kills the phone.
hope this helps.
According to me, the only things that go against the phone are the fact that it has no front cam, the screen is just a 65k and the speaker could have been a wee bit louder. Everything else software related has been or will soon be sorted out by the good folks at XDA. If you can accept the hardware limitations, take the plunge man. This phone is a flash junkies dream.
My hd2 is my first smartphone (comming from a old nokia) i still use my hd2 as a normal 'call & be called' phone
litle by little im feeling comfortable with the bazillion options
i got it cheap for 150 euro (+- 200$) in original/clean state .
This is my second hd2 and it is well worth it...it is a very fast phone when flashed to android

after my digitizer suddenly died out of nowhere and found out that this is a known issue to all HD2s, no its not worth it
I switched from a Touch Pro to a Blackberry four months ago. Although its a great phone, I am constantly looking for new handsets, often after the “thrill of the new toy” wears out...HTC`s phones are great, IMO and although the S2 seems to be the most praised phone recently, I would never buy a Samsung (or anything else, for that matter). Except for another Blackberry ) Strangely, the Sensation didn`t arouse my curiosity. Nor did the DHD. It felt too...cold. So, since I got no other 4.3 inch options (and since I`m low on cash) I thought about the HD2. It`s decently priced and I like the W7\Android boot option. My question is, will I be regreting this purchase ?
(made from“emotional” reasons-cause I like the phone a lot-and cause the TP was bought based on the same reasoning [but soon I had a love\hate relationship.Emphasis on hate, that`s why I switched to RIM] ) I keep reading about screen isssues and overheating\ hardware problems and I don`t want to make a bad decision. Should I get a native Android device or a NAND build will suffice ? I don`t want lag, that`s why I ran away from WM...Thank you
Here's the deal.
I would 100% recommend this phone. I have used RIM, iOS, Galaxy S, Sensation, Diamond... and for what you are talking about the HD2 would be perfect! But you have to learn how to mod the phone, stock you may not like it.
Know before you buy!
If it's amazon, make sure they will refund a defunct device. I would NOT buy ebay. If you use XDA market, make sure the seller is trustworthy. Ask for a youtube video if you have to. if you buy locally test the device before you buy!
1) do something processor intensive. Stream netflix or play some video. If it restarts or freezes, it is overheating, don't buy.
2) Take out the battery and ensure the white moisture indicator near the top area where the battery goes is white. If it's red, do not buy.
3) Turn on the screen, slide to unlock, turn off screen. Repeat 10 times or more. If you get where it will not slide to unlock at any point, do not buy, the digitizer or flex cord are failing.
Buy an HD2, but buy smart. It is an awesome device and even though I could afford a GS2 or Sensation and I actually put my HD2 up for sale sometimes, I keep coming back to it as my favorite device ever.
I can say that buying a secondhand HD2 isnt a bad move.
The HTC HD 2 din't disappoint me yet. I used the nand installation HTCHD2 Hyperdroid GBX v12, Gingerbread 2.3.3.
Everthing works and I havent encounter any app that didn't work yet.
Goodluck in finding your HD2, sometimes people already installled a working Android on it.
