Unlocked HTC Aria SIM problems - HTC Aria General

Howdy folks,
New to the Aria family - bought an unlocked Aria on eBay to use in Manitoba on MTS' new "4G" network. Brought it in today to get a new SIM card, but when we put the SIM card in... it got no service. They claimed it must not have been unlocked, so I brought it home with me and tried it with my wife's Rogers' SIM card from her iPhone... and a minute after plugging in the card - voila - it had signal and I could make calls. Head back to MTS, and try again - no love.
Any idea what might be causing this? Rogers and MTS both use 850/1900 frequencies, so it isn't that... the phone is running 2.1 stock as far as I can tell.

I don't see any reason why the Aria would not work for you. Is it an AT&T branded device? (i.e., has an AT&T logo on the front of the phone)

Yes, it is - and there are AT&T apps and a "splash" screen on start-up... but one non-AT&T carrier SIM works (Rogers)...
Would it have anything to do with using a mini-SIM (like, not punched out from the normal size card)?

It shouldn't matter. I'd probably go back and try again with a different SIM. Maybe it was just bad or something.
Even if the phone is locked, it should tell you "Network locked" and ask for a PIN instead of saying there is no signal. Also make sure you are reattaching the back of the phone when trying it because otherwise your reception will be bad.
Edit: Here's a random video showing what it looks like if your phone is SIM locked. (This is not the Aria but it looks the same.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UV2ALQxUnI#t=44s

Yeah - then I would say my phone is NOT locked... as I had suspected.
I'd like to try a fresh SIM rather than using an already active one, perhaps.

Would the fact that Rogers uses 850/1900, and MTS only uses 850 be an issue here? I'm pretty sure the phone supports both...?

Thank you very much! That was the answer for me. Duh, didn't realize the antenna was part of the back.

(Sprint) Touch Problem with Lock Code

Thread at sprintusers which died!!

Problem cant unlock phone
Well heres what I figured out for my Touch,
-In Vista the Windows Mobile Device Center allows me to browse and perform all tasks like as if there were no password
-In XP ActiveSync says the Device is locked and unlock it.
-After searching for a way to backup my phone so I can do a Hard Reset I found out that there should be a feature call Backup/Restore which was no where to be found in WMDC
(I also synced my Treo700wx and the feature didnt appeared for that phone either)
So, my question is whats the best way to backup everything because I do have access to the phones file through Vista. Thanks in advance!!! PLZ HELPP
use an app like spb backup or sprite backup

Yea but on the phone I am stuck at the lock screen, the only way I can access the phone files is through Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista. In XP it says to unlock it but I cant.
Where is the Sim Card to swap?
I have read the thread on the elf unlocker, touch unlocker, and many others. However, I haven't found anywhere where to swap the sim cards. Where is the Sim card located, I hope I am just being an idiot and it's right under my nose.
Can someone please tell me where the sim card is, and if they have successfully unlocked the Sprint Touch in the (USA)?
I spent a whole day on trying to figure this out, and still haven't. Wishing for a good semaritan to help walk me through. Thanks.
Ryan

Unlocking Sprint Touch Vogue w/ no SIM
Thanks for the reply. I shourtly found out there is no SIM Card, so to get straight to the point, is there any way to get the Touch Vogue to work on T-mobile (USA)'s network without having a SIM Card.
T-mobile said there is no way to use a phone on their network without a SIM Card.
Background: I had my T-mobile Dash stolen. Now thinking I could unlock it, I got a Sprint Touch from a friend who bought the I-Phone instead. Can I use it, or should I simply resell it?
Please help. Would anyone be kind enough to communicate via email for quicker response? [email protected]
can you unlock the sprint touch and

Ryan, not quite sure how you mucked this up, but you did. There are two main cell network types in the USA. ATT and T-mo use GSM, which has SIM cards. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA.
You CANNOT move a CDMA phone to GSM and vice versa. They use different radio frequencies, so it would be like trying to listen to an AM station with an FM radio.

Short answer, no.
Long answer is that these networks are still locked. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA carriers. In other parts of the world (Korea), CDMA carriers have the equivalent of SIM cards. In those places you can just swap out the cards, and you're all set. A long time ago our carriers decided not to implement this functionality. As a result, Verizon and Sprint cannot swap phones.
In the future, you may be able to bring other phones on the Verizon network. There is an initiative in progress that should provide for a way to test and approve devices for use. This won't happen for another year or so, so don't hold your breath.

[Q] [HD2] Antenna exclamation mark and 'SIM card is missing' issues

Hello all, I bought a used HD2 off CL (USA), hoping to unlock it (if locked) and use it with my ATT prepaid sim.
Outwardly, the phone looks fine and everything about it works quite nicely, EXCEPT that when I insert my SIM card and start the phone, it shows me an exclamation mark on the antenna icon. When I disable all wireless connections and then re-enable it, the icon now changes to the SIM card icon with an 'x' next to it, and I am shown a screen with a keypad and the following message: 'The SIM card is missing. You can still make emergency calls if your service provider supports it.'
Thinking it was a ROM issue, I successfully loaded the latest ROM from [showthread.php?t=789506] but it did not resolve the issue. There is no issue with the SIM because it works nicely with my AT&T Samsung a607. There are no signal strength issues either.
Please help!
Can someone please provide some insight on my situation? I hope I haven't posted in the wrong forum; if so, mods may move it to the appropriate place.
Any advice on diagnosing the issue will be appreciated; I don't even know why the phone is acting the way it is. Many thanks!
Wait a moment, so your device isnt already SIM unlocked? Sounds to me like you need to go ahead and get an unlock code for it, then navigate to the \Windows folder and hit up the program called "simlock.exe" and input your unlock code, then try your ATT SIM again.
Thanks much for the reply. Other phones usually prompt for a SIM unlock code by themselves... why doesn't this one?
Running simlock.exe from Windows does give me the message "Network is locked, please input unlock code". Before I buy the code, I want to make sure that there's nothing physically wrong with the phone. It should give me at least *some* sign that my SIM is being recognized, but rejected due to network-locking, no?
Thanks again!
See thats the thing. With a foreign SIM card in the device, IF LOCKED, simlock.exe should run automatically on startup and ask for the code....so honestly I do not know if your device is messed up somehow, or if its just being wonky for the sake of being wonky. Perhaps you might want to flash a new Radio ROM and see if it then recognizes your SIM. BE SURE to NOT flash one with .51 in its name.
Thanks again. Can you point to a thread with detailed instructions for flashing a new radio ROM for my device? I found many threads while searching and I am confused. I don't want to choose the wrong instructions and brick this device; I haven't done anything of this sort before.
Look at the top of these forums for a stickie by Snarksneeze that will teach you everything you need to know.
Hi again... I don't have a spare 8GB MicroSD card lying around. Is there any way I can do this flashing over USB? I did read that there's a risk associated with flashing over USB (cable yanks, power loss, etc.) but I did flash the newest ROM without any issue, and hopefully I can do the same for the new Radio ROM.
The Radio version shown in the 'About Phone' section is 2.14.50.04, btw.
You can use your 16GB that came with the phone, or any other one for that matter. That requirement is more of a recomendation really. I have flashed with my stock 16GB many times. And yes, you can do it via USB aswell.
OK, so I have more information about the problem. I got the phone unlocked (I heartily recommend 'fastunlocker' on eBay) thinking that it would solve the issue... but it didn't. But, on a lark, I tried my friend's post-paid T-Mobile SIM in the HD2 and it worked! My AT&T pre-paid SIM does not... can this be a problem? The damn thing works nicely in other (unlocked) phones.
Is anyone else successfully using a AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) SIM on a TMOUS HTC HD2?
It may very well be the problem then. I have heard that some phones are incompatible with pre-paid SIMs.
God, that would suck donkeyballs. Can someone confirm that an unlocked TMOUS HD2 does not work with AT&T GoPhone prepaid SIMs?
had this same exact issue and realized that one of the pins in the sim card reader was stuck in the down position. I poked it with a small screwdriver and it popped back into place. works like a charm now.
Thanks for the reply. Are you sure this is the issue? As I mentioned in a previous post in this thread, my friend's T-Mobile SIM works nicely with the phone.
EDIT: Also, are you using it with an AT&T GoPhone SIM?
Bump... anyone?
Final bump: maybe I am SOL. :'(
Is anyone successfully using a TMOUS HD2 with an AT&T Prepaid (GoPhone) SIM?
Give it some time. Sometimes threads at XDA stay dormant for months and then suddenly BAM! a breakthrough happens.
I would say its your sim. How old is it?
I had the exact same problem. I bought a HD2 off cl and put my sim in and got the no sim message and exclamation point. I was using a sim from the voicesteam days but guess what it worked just fine in the Nexus one I had just gotten so I figured it had to be the phone. I finally used a friends sim and it worked fine. So I would turn the phone off in settings then slip his sim out with the battery still in and put my sim in and turn the phone back on. Guess what, it would work for about 10 min then it would suddenly go back to no sim message. So I went and got a new sim from T-Mobile and walla works like a charm. So try what I did and if you end up with the same problem try a new sim from AT&T. I don't know what is different about the HD2 but there something about the older sims that it doesn't like.
Hope that helps!
Hey... thanks for ther reply! My SIM is brand new (about two weeks old). I will however go to the AT&T store and get it replaced to see if it fixes the problem. Thanks again, I appreciate it.
Dear look my problem...

Question for people who got their Venue Pro from the Microsoft Store

Hey,
So we heard reports that the 8GB DVP models sold in the Microsoft Store on launch day appeared to work with AT&T SIM cards, meaning that they were SIM unlocked. Can anyone confirm that? It raises a number of questions:
1. Are the replacement units that fixed the wifi/SIM issues still unlocked?
2. Do these unlocked units support Auto Device Config (ADC)? That is, what does the Cellular settings screen look like - can you see the APN? Does it automatically change when you put in a different SIM? Can you see the hard-coded T-Mobile default APN?
I've got a 16GB locked DVP from Dell, but would consider swapping it for an 8GB from a brick-and-mortar Microsoft Store if they are indeed SIM unlocked. (Anybody in southern california interested in swapping with me?)
The first phone (Engineering Sample) was SIM unlocked. I couldn't try it on the second phone because after the first reset it gave the invalid SIM error.
Now the third phone is locked (I'm so pissed, bought it @ full price)
Ok if I can remember, when I put in the ATT sim and switched off the 3G it didn't show any "configure" screen but EDGE was working
Hope this helps
I tried to put an att sim in there but the card would not fit since the reader is on the other side of the card from tmobile.

Thanks - this makes me feel oddly better, like I haven't missed out on the chance to buy an unlocked, working device. Bummer for people who bought original units from the MS Store and then got replacements that were locked though.

Thanks, but I think you're mistaken. All SIM cards are the same shape, unless you're talking about Micro SIMs. I have tried an AT&T SIM in my Venue Pro.
Thats strange . . . my sims are different . . . size is the same but the shape are at different sides . . .

[Q] how to update an "unlocked" phone

complicated story. recently purchased an "unlocked" optimus 7 phone off of kijiji and it was working on my fido simcard, but it only worked until i got home and synced with my computer played around with the simcard and battery and was alittle rough with it, then the "unlocked" phone detects no sim on my phone. had a feeling i got ripped off. but awkward enough i think i had a hand in making it not work (i tried putting the sim card in without pulling out the battery, so i suspected that i might have messed up the hardware)
few days later, plan was up for fido so i switched to telus, but because the plan i got did not include data, so i am not sure if it would actually connect with a "unlocked" telus phone, i just want confirmation from anybody that "Any sim card can work with Any telus phone?"
story aint over
hoping that it was my fault for only messing up with the software by attempting to unlock myself and that it had nothing to the hardware, i went to pacificmall to somebody reliable to solve my problem and asked to "re-unlock" it for me.
result was that he told me it might be a hardware issue, and that he tried other sim cards and phone had not detected any signal.
what happened later on was i attempted to fix hardware my self by looking to push the simcard holder down thinking that it might be because it was loose from be trying to jam the simcard in earlier.
end result, phone is now detecting my telus simcard, and so my main question now is "i dont know if its becuase it is unlocked that made it work, or do all telus sims work on all telus phones and i fixed my phone by some retarded method"
All Telus sims work on all Telus branded phones, no matter what you may have done to it.
not working anymore
after having reception for one day, it ain't working anymore.
can anyone provide any help? would it be a good idea to sent it to Lg for fix?
Dude, I don't know for sure, but you probably did a short-circuit on the SIM socket when you tried to insert the SIM with the battery connected =/

[Q] International travel questions

Hey guys,
I tried searching on the topic but I'm hoping for more information specific to this phone.
I'm traveling to Germany in September. This will be my first time out of the country. I just called Sprint and requested for the phone to be unlocked for international travel. Since I've had the GS4 less than 90 days, I'm told this process will take a few days.
My questions are:
Now that my phone is unlocked, I can use international/locally bought micro-SIM cards, correct?
If I use these SIMs, will I still be subject to Sprint's high usage billing or will it operate entirely independently of Sprint's service?
If I flash a ROM, should I stick to the TW-based variants to ensure international capability? Or is it safer to leave the phone entirely stock until my trip is over?
If you have any tips and tricks for traveling (best SIM card, how to save money, the ROM you used while traveling, best apps for using minimal data, etc.) please do so! I appreciate your advice, everybody.
Thanks

If you lucky and your unlocking will go through without issues that some of us here are having then you should be able to use any non-US sim cards while outside the US. You will be subject to those carriers charges only. Just don't forget to turn off CDMA roaming and switch the phone to GMS/UMTS mode.
I cannot comment on the ROMs though.
I'm currently delpoyed with the military. Had my gs4 remotely unlocked and I now use a rebelphone sim card for my local area. Just turn your phone to gsm and I turn off data because its not included in my rebel phone package. Should be all good to go once u get that done.
Oh and I use blue kabans ROM

Is it possible to use a US sim card from another carrier in the US to check that the phone has successfully been unlocked before traveling? Sprint's told me that they unlocked my phone, but I want to be absolutely sure before I step on a plane in two weeks. I also have an update procedure to unlock the phone - I'd like to do that here in the US before I leave so that if there's any problem, I can work them in advance.
Thanks for moving Kenny!
Kate, from what I've been reading, under no circumstances will Sprint allow the phone to connect to a US GSM network using a T-Mobile or AT&T SIM card. I think this is analogous to "unlocking" the phone from its carrier, which carriers do not tolerate.
Buck, I will look at rebel phone among others. It seems data will be expensive, no matter what SIM card I choose. I expect things like Facebook updates and photo uploads should wait until I connect to wireless at hostels or my friend's place.

I'm in the same boat as you are, from what I could gather from forums and Sprint itself, the answer is NO, you cannot verify that you phone was unlock while here in the US with _ANY_ SIM card.

Yes, that's correct.
And does the phone need to be rooted? It sounds like maybe not for voice, probably for data? I will want both when we go to Spain in a few months. I don't have the phone yet but plan to pick one up this week - love my S3 but I can't use it internationally, and I don't think I can go back to my Photon for the trip.

People report issues with data but according to sprint once it is unlocked it should work just fine both gsm voice and data, no rooting should be needed.
You can verify your UICC(sim) slot is unlocked by sticking in any "non-Sprint" sim card... if you get an error saying "Invalid Sim" then it's not unlocked... if you see no error.. you are probably unlocked. You can further verify this by going into About Device > Status and seeing if it's reading the ICCID of your new sim card.
You can test this with domestic sims too(ATT/Tmo etc).. though you will not get service due to Samsung blocking them. But yes.. the phone will read the ATT/Tmo ICCID if unlocked.

Hi,
I got my sprint s4 unlocked by sprint for international use. I've got a europe orange sim, and when I put it in the phone, I don't get any error msg. (BTW, when I leave the phone without any sim card, it shows some small icon on top saying I'm missing a sim, also it won't let me go into network settings..) is it how it's suppose to be when Sprint unlock the phone for 3rd party sim (international) card? meaning If the phone was "unlocked" i would have get some error msg. saying the device "Can't access" the sim card etc.?
Thanks!

The error message would be the same small icon but it would just say "Invalid SIM", but this is just on my phone that was supposedly unlocked by Sprint, I cannot confirm that it actually works with non US SIM card since I haven't had a chance yet to travel outside the US. Your phone can be unlocked as well or not, you, unfortunately, have no way of telling this until you travel outside the US and try it.

Alright, If it says invalid sim after you put international card in it's definitely not unlocked. Me and me friend got the phone on the same day and called sprint about 100 time to get the phones working. After sprint told me and my buddy that phones are unlocked, we put it German sim card in and it said invalid sim, but sprint said it will change when you go to Germany. So i didn't believe them and called them another 100 times till about mid June I talked to some supervisor and she said that phone is unlocked. So I put it my German sim back in and it sent me an SMS about the rates of that German service in USA. After that my friend called those assholes another 100 times and they assured him that it will definitely work even though it says invalid SIM. Long story shor... we get there and he is screwed for 3 weeks. Even more so, he was willing to pay $10 per minute to roam in Germany with Sprint... NO SIGNAL ANYWHERE... AND my data did not work with different sim card. only calls and sms. Later i found out that it could be fixed by going to a local branch and downloading something but it was too late. SO Sprint sucks.
Here's the email I got upon requesting the unlock:
Hello Torrance,
This email is intended to confirm that Sprint has successfully processed the unlock request for your Samsung Galaxy s4 Device.* In order for the unlock to be completed, the device has to be connected to the CDMA Network or Wi-Fi connection for the update to finalize.
*Once the update has been completed, please follow the steps below to unlock the device after you have the third party SIM:
*Turn off device > Insert 3rd party SIM > go to Settings > More (tab) > System Update > UICC unlock.* You will receive the update and it should change to GSM Mode.* *
*Phone number: XXX-XXX-XXXX
*If you have any additional questions comments or concerns please contact Sprint World Wide care 24/7 at 888-226-7212
*Thank you,

Sprint doesnt know what theyre talking about half the time. that is incorrect info.
no matter what sim you put in... if its PROPERLY unlocked... then you wont see a "invalid sim error". even att/tmobile.
if you put a sim in and it says "invalid sim" then the OTA sim unlock was not properly done and despite saying unlocked in sprints system.. it's really not.
I have both a sprint gs4 and sprint htc one. it's exactly the same on both.
