So for quite some time ive been having issues with my usb port and file transfers between PC's in mass storage mode.
I would try different usb ports, different computers and have three different Epic 4G charging cables i would to switch between, hoping one would finally work.
Seemed like i would always end up with file transfer crashes or the infamous device not recognized or has malfunctioned. Seems like the only thing the supplied samsung cables are good for is charging.
Im terrified of flashing with Odin and hate doing it with my cable.
I know many other epic users on the forums have had this issue and i just want to share some good news.
So the other day while i was at my girlfriends house i noticed she had a external WD hdd plugged into her laptop via at Micro usb cable. Just for giggles i decided to try my luck with mass storage and put some pictures from my phone onto her PC.
First and foremost I noticed how short and thick the cable was. After plugging the cable into my phone, it didn't wiggle and felt "tight". Windows immediately recognizes it every time and transfers are faster than ever.
I will be buying one for myself real soon. If anyone else is interested, I've found them on ebay for $5 bucks.
Hope you guys enjoy this.
i dont have permission to post links yet, but if someone could go to ebay and search "Western Digital WD Passport Micro B USB 2.0 Cable NEW" that would be wonderful.
Thanks guys

Well I guess I'm gonna have to order one from monoprice then
Thanks guys! Been loooking for a good cable and only recomended my find because I knew it worked well for data transfers

I've roooted and odin'd so many times with the stock cable that I don't even remember. Only had a few roots that didn't take and one odin failure. I think you guys should just accept that so many uses of any cable will result in a couple of failures. The stock cable works just fine. Don't waste your money on a placebo...

The stock cable is every bit as bad as everyone says it is - I found out personally.
And who said anything about wasting money? Click here then click "42 new" if you're not a Prime member. Find the seller with the cable for $1.28 with free shipping. Buy it and forget your troubles.
yea my sisters htc cable works so much better than the epic cable. rooting and odin was such a pain with the stock. used hers one day just for the hell of it odin worked the first time in minutes i was blown away. moral of the story epic usb blows.
I also have no trouble with the stock cable.

Tried it today on my pc and it worked flawless. I'm convinced that the cable makes the difference. I'm just going to assume the samsung cables probably have a bit of data loss depending on your cable.

It's actually a combination of both because the losses are cumulative. A marginal cable such as Samsung's might work with an excellent USB port but not a marginal USB port.
My stock cable works for data transfer on most PCs I use, but on one it does not. So I store one of those high-quality monoprice cables, which works fine, near that box.
My stock cable failed in a new pc with USB 2.0 ports trying to one click root... file transfer and charging never had a problem.
Used my friends HTC cable which was noticeably heavier and it worked first try.
Also (not trusting the stock cable) use a Blackberry cable with Odin and had no problem.

Hey all my android brethren! I am a modest if not intensive android tester/ researcher and this post is exclusively for the Samsung Vibrant. I have tested over 25 mainstream a/v out cables and have come up with one winner in stability, quality, and greatness haha! The winner is....GIGAWARE 3.5 A/V out cable for camcorders and other devices. The product number is...11A09 and the sku....040293024246. Radioshack has it...good hunti.g and watching your phone be more then what it is!
Update: The red input is actually the video i.e. yellow input, sorry everyone!!
Sounds more like a phone accessory more than phone development...but that might just be me...Thanks for your testing either way.
How much is it?

Checked the SKU and model # on RadioShack and nothing. A Google search produces ONLY this post. Anyone have any luck with this as I would like to find a cable that works well?
What I wasn't to know is why you can't watch Avatar through the tv out cable. I can watch anything on my phone through the cable except the movie. Suck

Issues with other cables include choppy video, freezing up on tv, and just plain not working at all.

Just cut the headphone cable and attach RCA cables to it,
Headphone Wire Color codes
Red - Speaker +
Green - Speaker +
White - Video +
Gold - All Ground connects on same cable.
And your done.. takes all of 20 secs
Note: Make sure to burn off coating on headphone cables, just take a match to each seperate cable.

DRM, and yes, it does suck. But you can work around it by encoding your own and deleting the one that came with the phone. There's even an app in the apps forum to provide the launcher.
I bought this cable about a month ago. it was 30 bucks from radio shack. albeit 10ft long. works good but picture quality is so so. I also bought the samsung hdmi cable but we all know how that went.
i tried the official apple av cable that came with my old ipod, and it worked perfect with my vibrant

Yellow is video - red is right speaker, white is left speaker. What you don't get is stereo sound.
lol, "extensive" testing? Seriously? These cables are composite, the quality will NOT be any better from one to the other. If you have signal issues, then the cable may be defective.
BTW, the audio coming out of the phone is near useless with the 3.5 out. I have to increase my audio on the TV to near max in order to hear comfortably.

None of the micro-USB to HDMI cables seem to work.
Zune HD dock cables work
If your Zune HD owner with dock the Vibrant only needed 3 channel 3.5 mm. I found it out when I was watching some guy using the similar cable. Not HD though but it's a start.
If the usb port on this phone is a non-standard size I am going to be pissed.
I loved that the mt3g uses a regular mini usb plug because pretty much everyone and their mom has something lying around the house that uses that size. That means that wherever I end up I can always find something to plug into and charge my phone.
I've used camera cables, blackberry chargers, even used my buddy's ps3 controller cable to charge my phone directly from the ps3 or the cable box, lol.
Can anyone enlighten me before I buy something from Ebay that I don't need?

Came across a thread in my googling that indicated there were two styles of micro usb. Also a coworker's phone (Captivate) has an equally small but differently shaped port.
I assumed one of the two ports (mine or hers) had to be non-standard, just didn't know which one.
Thanks for answering my question. So this should work just fine?

I've been charging mine on an old LG charger I had lying around and keep the supplied micro USB cord with my laptop.
side note: I just ordered some Motorola right angle adapters from Amazon for 4 bucks each... I HATE the location of the USB plug; it makes landscape suck and charging at night is a pain logistically.
Need to get some mini-usb to micro-usb adapters to make use of the rest of my crap.

Heh that's pretty bad.. My only problem has been battery drain while running GPS and Pandora simultaneously in the car. The phone is capable of pulling more than 700mA when you utilize all of the hardware, so there is no way to keep a net positive charge current. Also when the battery gets too hot (above 45°C, I believe), the phone will stop charging to prevent the battery from exploding

I had the same problem charging in car. if using usb to charge it charges at 300mah but a/c charges at 600mah. so if you are using usb and have an extra cable you can short the green and white wires(going to phone) and this will trick it into thinking its on a/c. have not had any problems since doing this. i can go on a 6 hour drive with gps and music streaming and still arive fully charged.
I would like to see pictures if you have some.
I've seen this symptom with a bad flash. Something was using a ton of charge. More than my charger could put out. Hence, battery drain when plugged in.

i do not have pictures. i use heat shrink on my wires so i cant take apart to get any but if i can find another cable i will modify it and take some. it is a simple modification. just carefully cut the black casing from around wires(anywhere along cable, remove about 2 inches) without cutting wires inside. you should have 4 wires(black ground, red 5v+, white data -, green data +) cut the white and green wires then splice them together(the ends going to phone) seal it back up and your good to go. this is just simulating plugging into your a/c adapter. all the adapter is doing is converting a/c to 5v d/c and shorting data wires to tell phone its plugged into wall. usb is already running at 5v d/c so you just have to provide your own way of shorting data. you can ohm out your cable if you like to verify. 4 pins on conector 2 center ones are for data. they are open until you plug into a/c adapter at which point you will get short.
The cable did the same thing on my girlfriend's phone, too. Phone thinks it's charging, therefor no deep sleep, and it just discharges. It may be the cable/charger combo, thogh, but I KNOW the cable is certainly fault; I tried it with other chargers.

I actually had the charger port on my phone stop working, but Android still showed it was charging. I tried multiple combinations of cords and chargers, only to take it into Sprint for a replacement.
When it first started, it only seemed to happen on certain cords and in certain positions, but eventually, it stopped charging altogether.

Hmm, this seems to be happening to my girlfriend's HTC Evo. Did you have the Sprint insurance? And was the phone still under warranty?
My samsung cable failed within the 1st month. Its really the worst cable ever made on this planet.
Since discovering this I have noticed there has been an issue noted on here regarding Micro USB leads not fitting the charging port properly on the Note 2, this has never been a problem for my Note 2 so I didn't realise I had a problem. However, when I recently rooted my Note, Just as I was about to press "Start" the Note disappeared from Odin, then re-appeeared. I checked the leads and despite seeming to fit perfectly & changing OK it appeared every time I touched the cable (phone end) it would flash between "added" & "removed" on Odin.
Now of course this is simple, use another lead or (as I have now done) trimming down the plastic on the plug sorts this out, but my concern what that I barely discovered the problem in time, I am no expert on these things but I suspect I'd be in a heap of trouble now if I'd discovered a few seconds later?
All I am saying is, give your lead a wiggle before using odin etc. ....And Samsung, What were you thinking eh?
-
All my microusb cables as well as original samsung cable fits good to device. I think you have defect cable\device jack.
Thanks for pointing this out Zoidster.
This is issue with defective cable. I noticed it since my 1st charge, but thought it was a one off and just my bad luck. Now others are complaining, it is becoming clear that Samsung might be supplying some bad cables. They fit in socket but only loosely. Any other cable I use on my note 2, fits tightly and securely and you dont get an intermittent charge or connection status.

That's your problem. Not a major one.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
^^ Bit of a strange attittude? Its no longer my problem as I am now aware and have corrected it, however It could potentially be anyone who has one of these dodgy cables and doesn't realise's problem, mine seemed fine (No problems charging) until I was about to flash. Surely you'd agree its better that people are aware of a potential problem (however isolated it may be) rather than finding out they are affected halfway through a flash?
I've noticed this too. While copying some huge movies,it would occasionally keep throwing errors about the device being missing. Cable issues, no doubt.
- Swyped from my Galaxy Note 2
I have to be honest my charger/data cable falls out quite easy if its knocked, but tbh why would you be going anyway near the cable when flashing with odin thats a very bad idea
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
I noticed that the cable that was bundled with the Note 2 had a smaller "hook" compared to my older Samsung cables. That could somehow be the problem.
Yeah I have that problem too the cable is just loose for my note 2. My brother and cousin also have this issue. Fortunately I have a Nokia and a HTC cable that I use instead

I confirm your theory, the supplied USB cable looks great, except it is useless and dangerous !!!
as the pic shows, it is a millimeter shorter than a working micro USB cable. Note that I can't get the original cable to work with my International Galaxy note 2 (UK), it doesn't connect to Kies, but it worked once, and I was going to start updating it to a newer ROM (suggested by Kies) then suddenly it stopped updating, thanks god my Internet is too slow and it was still downloading the Firmware.

Ye ive had this issue, I switched to a htc cable and never had another problem... Interestingly I have an S3 cable (black) that has a much tighter fit than the Note 2, even though you would think its the same design.. bad batch of note 2 white connectors?
I have some cables (one original Samsung which came with Note 1) which doesnt work. But they worked well for some time. First I thought there was a problem with the phone (HTC Desire) then the same cable didnt work with my other phones. The original Samsung cable the same... just stopped working. All the non working cables need a bit of a lift at the entry point to the jack. Then they work.
This is the hot issue for this device sold in my country. It's easily slipped of from its port.
I use old Sony mobile cable. It snugged fit on the port.

Well, I have modified my USB cable as i thought it doesn't work because it is short, you can see in the picture >
and still doesn't work properly (connect and disconnect many times) but I think that the cable it self is defective, it misses a pin (it should be 5 pins but this one has only 4) check the pic bellow >
this is very bad for a 700$ phone ! note that I have a scratched screen out of the box plus a defective backcover and I don't have warranty because it is not launched yet in my country

I did it but still doesn't work, the plug itself is too big, and it disconnect easily if you just pull it gently! And mine apparently misses a pin, My Sony Ericsson cable is much better than the supplied crap.
Well the point of all this discussion is: if you have a new galaxy note, don't trust the usb cable who comes with it and get another one ASAP.

I totally agree.
That's how I soft-bricked my SGS2 actually. I tought my usb socket was broke. Changing my cable fixed it.
I swear I am using the cable that came with the phone but fast charge isn't working.... Always says I'm charging in slow mode...
Looking specifically for a close up pic of the two ends of the cable so I can visually verify I have the right one...
Thanks!
Do you use the cable with the original LG Charger ?
The LG Charger is 1,8A output.
The commons chargers and USB on computers are 1A output.
SO if you plug in your cable to a computer or other charger, it's normal.

I swear I am using the cable that came with the phone but fast charge isn't working.... Always says I'm charging in slow mode...
Looking specifically for a close up pic of the two ends of the cable so I can visually verify I have the right one...
Thanks!

from the D802, but really just try another cable to the charger if it makes any difference.
Hmmm, that is definitely different than what I believe to be the cable that came with my G2. Not sure how to tell what version of us, but it's Verizon.
But yes I have tried many combinations of cables with the LG charger and none of them are fast charging. Using CurrentWidget and a couple other battery monitoring apps, I've also found that I get a much higher amperage draw from the charger that came with my galaxy s3. Anywhere from 200mA - 400mA, whereas I only get 50mA-150mA with the cable in this pic and the 1.8mA LG charger. But still all of then state that they are Slow Charging.
Can someone tell me if this is the stock LG USB cable?
Does it matter if we use the fat g2 USB vs regular one like above picture?

You would be surprised how many times an USB cable matters, and then again when it doesn't.
For example a chromecast USB cable which I accidentally got, did not charge my phone almost at all and not DATA connection was possible. But that was a clear error and I do not think that cable should be used with anything but with the Chromecast being nicely shielded and all.
ASUS in my country uses same cables as the one pictured above (Still does not mean that his is not original LG). But if you get a normal connection on the computer same goes for AC , USB charging in places where they should be, use whatever cables you want.
Stay away rather from too generic, skinny unbranded ones from chinese pages. (Even though from them I always buy iPhone cables . BUt who would pay 15 bucks instead of 1 and they served my wife well)
So far ASUS, HTC, Samsung , LG, and Nokia cables did there job mixing across my devices.
Verizon stock cable.

Thank you JasonSF!!!
I apparently lost mine then.. Does anyone where you can buy a cable that supports the fast charge? Or even what spec to look for?
It doesn't seem like its a very exact science..

Pagot - YEESS! I acutally used my Chromecast USB cable (which I'll be returned on Monday btw cause, well its just not that cool) ALL NIGHT LONG!!! I didn't think anything of it plugged it in and immediately walked away. Little did I realize, it was one of those cables that, 5 seconds after plugging in, reports that you should unplug it immediately to avoid damaging the phone!!!
I didn't see the message until the next morning and saw that my phone didn't get charged that night. And for about 2 days, I had VERY strange charging issues.. (see this post) I think they've gone away now, except that my fast charge isn't working.. But, back to the original purpose of this post, Im hoping that is USB cable related..
Anyway, it was the wierdest this, for about 2 days, certain chargers and USB cables that have always worked on this phone, didn't. The first day nothing but plugging into my computer would register any charge.. By that night most chargers worked but some wouldn't provide more than 50mA, and now, all of them seem to be working again..
SOOO, moral of the story is that in incorrect USB cable CAN damage your phone! At least temporarily.. Still doesn't make any sense to me how though.. Perhaps some protect feature kicked in and caused the symptoms I saw, but all I know is that my phone wouldn't charge anymore after using that Chromecast cable...

There is a thread in the G2 Accessories forum discussing compatible cables.
