Howto: Unbrick Semi-Bricked X10 (red flashing led) - XPERIA X10 General

It was just a matter of time for me to brick me new phone. It took me 8 days this time but it can be fixed fairly easy.
If you've got a red flashing led (flashing ca. once per second) while charging and flashing three times after pressing the power button, you can try the following.
I had an error like that and fixed it.
After leaving the phone at the charger for about half an hour it turned on at random but was stuck at the Sony Ericsson bootscreen. I think it has something to do with wiping battery stats, so be careful with this option in XRecovery.
This is how I got it working again:
First of all ensure your battery is not damaged. Try it in a different phone or try a different battery.
If it works, ensure your usb-port is working.
Afterwards do the following:
1. Boot up a windows computer
2. Download and install Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) - you will find it easily with the search machine of your choice
3. Get some adhesive tape, press the back button and tape it down (be sure it is pressed all the time)
4. Connect the phone to your Computer, you should see the flashing LED again, don't panic
5. Start SEUS and chose the X10
6. Wait(!)
7. Get a cup of coffee and wait again
8. The LED will turn green at some time, windows will recognize the device. Complete the update of system software (even if it says your phone is up to date)
9. You will have to reboot the phone. Your LED will be flashing red again. Don't panic, your almost done. Leave the phone charging for another hour or two. It should be booting by itself.
After this steps my phone was working fine again. No dead battery, no dead usb-port as mentioned in other forums or other threads.
Just try it, if you flashed a custom rom you have got nothing to lose.

Thank you for this thread. I've seen many similar issues and was just hit with this RED LED of death - 3 blinks then nothing...
Messing with chargemon and charger in /system/bin/ - has certainly not been good, but I'm not convinced it was the entire problem, at least in my case I was running a version of Wolfbreak CM 6.5 v5 and let the battery get below 5% charge.
I should have turned it off, waited until I could charge again but I didn't! When I tried to recharge, the phone initially was giving green led's so it might have been possible to salvage easily.. I made a terrible mistake of going to xRecovery and waiting until the battery was so dead, there was really no way of recovering from this state and totally drained out the battery.
So I purchased a new BST-41 battery for AU $25. Maybe that was expensive for a clone, others are available for $4 on ebay but hey, have a look at this thread regarding Original VS. Fake BST-41 Battery - quite interesting!
This got my X10 working again... BUT I am unable to get into SEUS, Flashtool or make the charger work. The USB port appears to have been disabled and am unsure about the best way to reset to an operational state.
Will update this thread when I have found more
EDIT 1: It's all in the above post...
5. Start SEUS and chose the X10
6. Wait(!)
7. Get a cup of coffee and wait again

With the exception of maybe having to mess around with this a bit, it will eventually work. I didn't tape the button down because you need to release it but I've just seen green flashes.. I'm very close to getting this phone working again with SEUS and the back key..
EDIT 2: xRecovery > Factory Reset > Full wipe - you will be warned of loosing all user data - The moment you wipe the user data, the phone will recognise the charger and turn to a green LED. From this point let it reboot, it will go silly and you may even get a WLOD - White LED of death.
If you have got USB to connect, follow the standard method of using SEUS to restore a factory ROM and take it from there. TRY to remember not to let the battery go below 5% without a charger and invest in some spare battery's from eBay - cheap after all
Connect via WiFi is only possible with LT15 (Arc) - SO-01c (Arc) - Neo (MT15) - Play (R800) - USB must be enabled for a connection to happen to the PC and this is where I'm still stuck..
EDIT 3: Turns out the problem is - USB Port needs to be re-soldered, it is broken contact and is intermittently connecting to the USB port.

This is what happened to my phone too. I ended up sending it away for repair because the USB port was broken. The phone would say it was charging but it actually wasnt. Im still waiting to get my phone back.

I thought it wasn't possible to brick an xperia x10, forgive me if I'm ring?

It wasn't bricked, it was faulty connection in the USB port not allowing their phone accept a charge. The red LED is from an uncharged battery.

Thanks OP, this worked perfectly. I'm glad I risked it with an amazing deal on craigslist. Kudos.

Only if you have access to the bootloader.

Ok.. i think i bricked my x10.
My x10 always gave me problem at startup. I had to remove battery wait 5sec. Then again try booting. After few attempts it would boot. So i decided to reinstall 2.1. Downloaded seus. Installation till 90%. And unknown error window.
Service Center won't take it as its from different country.
When i try to boot it. It blinks green led and that's it.
Any suggestions?

yes. i could successfully flash the phone with 2.1.B.0.1 version just now. without error. but now i when i try to start the phone, it doesn't. instead, i get the red led flashing three times.
i put it for charging. the green led lights up showing it has started charging. but after roughly 15-20 seconds the green led fades off.
1. flashing was successful which means usb is not broken right?
2. have i bricked my phone?
3. How can i get my lovely x10 back to life?

Have you flashed with SEUS or flashtool?
Try reflashing the rom as a first step.
If flashing with flashtool, does the sw detect your phone? Could you post the output to the screen as flashtool tries to flash? That would help!

Looks like you had a successful flash. How much battery did you have when you flashed?

If the battery had drained dry flashtool wouldn't have finished flashing, would it though?
Can you have you tried to reflash?

battery was very very low. but the phone is connected to laptop while flashing..wouldn't that be enough?
@acmbc: should i reflash?
when i kept x10 for charging, the green charging led lights up for 10-15 seconds and then goes off.. still kept it charging for couple of hours. and then tried rebooting. this time green led flashed. phone vibrated but nothing.
ok..i gotta confess. i tried the crazy solution mentioned on talk.sonyericsson which asked to keep battery in freezer for an hour and then try charging it. i did that. and when i put x10 for charging. for 20 seconds the green light was on.. but then it went berserk.. vibrating continuously. at once i took out the battery. and now i am scared as it is repeating this cycle when i charge it. green light->off->vibrate continuously.

There's your problem. You must never flash with low battery. always flash with at least 50% or more. And no you're not getting power from the computer in flashmode only the battery is supplying that power.
If the flash was successful you could try and hook the phone up to the charger (wall charger) and let it sit there for a while. This might get it back to life.

ok.. thanks. i thought phone would get the power from computer.
but now i have one more question in front of me.
How do i charge my phone.
coz. when i connect x10 to wall charger it shows green light for some time and then starts vibrating untill i get the battery out.
if i connect x10 to the computer which i am doing now, it is flashing red light every 5 seconds.

Looks like you had an unsuccessful flash then. If you got any other means of getting the battery charged then try that and see if you can flash it again.
If not, I'm afraid you'll have to take it to the service center.

I read the post from the op..
If the battery gets severely drained it may look like the phone is dead.
Just plug it in and sometime up to a hour later it will power up.

officially bricked

I tried to load up the new gingerbread roms from my current one. I downloaded its content and tried to install it via clockwork.
I first deleted system, logo, and cache followed up by a restore format. When trying to download the new rom, I was getting a weird error that was stopping me from completing the full installation. So basically was in a chokehold because I didn't have any backup files or another working rom in the sd at that time. I just restarted the phone and it for a few times was stuck on the M screen, but now its just green led when I plug it into the computer usb. When plugging it into the outlet, it imediately turns on stuck on the M screen and shuts off when unplugging as if the battery isnt charging at all.

bootloader is such a rare occurance for me, i just had it come out but it was flashing low battery. the thing is, im not quite sure if its charging if i have it plugged into the computer. when i have it plugged into an outlet, the M splash screen comes up so i'm worried that draining the power..
edit: now it flickers for a split second, am i supposed to hold on to it til something shows up? been like 1 minute
i dont think bricking phone blows your battery. at least i hope it doesnt, was working fine before.
Plug it in without the battery if a question mark comes up you ned to use another battery cuz it won't charge in boot loader and the boot loader should pop up right away hold power volume down and camera button it takes about three seconds
swyped from my DROIDX using XDA App
well its basically the same thing. when plug into the outlet it shows the m splash screen with or without the battery.
when its plugged into the compuiter however, its just flickers once. when it is done with the battery in, the led is on forever
EDIT: OBSERVATION
when on the wall, it is actually charging, but REALLY slowly because of the fact that the splash screen stays on. found this out because i had it in for30 min and then tried to connect mit to my comp with bootload and it loaded for a few minutes with the low battery flashing.
is version 320 the latest?
Okay. so it isnt charging as I though because its not working at all... problem is, I dont know if it truly is a battery defect. If I were to Buy a new battery, how would i know if it is charging if it doesnt boot and just stays stuck on the M logo screen?
perhaps I should by a battery charger where i take the battery out and charge it through there? because my bootloader always gives me the same low battery.
Do you have any friends with the same phone? There is also a macgyver (spelling?) Method of doing this by cutting the USB cable open and attaching the cable ends to the battery. However I would only do this if you're really desperate
i just really need make complete sure that this phone is INFACT dead battery
when not plug, it doesnt turn on what so ever with a white spark on the led.
when plugged nto outlet the logo shows but i isnt charging because it isnt booting
when plugged into the computer it is a solid green which i think represent a dead or a low battery state(can someone back thisup?)
Your battery is dead, as in drained, but should work fine once you get your phone to a bootable state again. The problem is that, in the state your phone is in, there's no charging capabilities. Bootloader won't do it, neither will sitting at the M logo. So, you just need to find someone with a compatible battery to let you use it to SBF your phone. Then, boot the phone up completely, and let your battery charge to at least 50-60% before trying to install a ROM. Preferably, I'd go with a full charge, just in case you end up in a similar situation again.
This is nothing to freak out over, you'll be fine.. the only problem you have is that your battery has no juice, as confirmed by the low battery warning in the bootloader, when you successfully got it to load.

thanks for the reassuring comment, however, i think i need to bootload.
i accidently did the partition hat formats everything.. cant recall if it was under clockwork because it didnt have the same interface, i was all light blue text with an ok button on the left corner. Anyway, i've completely destroyed the phone as in no roms no factory.
can I possibly get a dock to charge this battery and then get into bootloader for an sbf session

You definitely need to use the bootloader, and I was implying that in the first reply(SBF'ing requires going into the bootloader). If you had a stand-alone battery charging cradle/dock, that should do the trick. Just make sure to let the battery charge sufficiently. I've successfully gotten an SBF completed, starting with only 30% battery. SBF takes about 7 minutes on my laptop(not that I've timed it, but I usually light up a smoke when I start the process lol). So, as long as the battery is charged enough to no longer give the "Low Battery" warning in the bootloader, you should be fine.

Hard Bricked my phone

I already posted this in Q&A, but I thought it would get noticed more in this section.
Ok I believe my phone is "Hard Bricked", because it doesn't power up at all. The Green led light will show if i take the battery out and plug it into the computer. This happened as was trying to start the process to unlock my bootloader. I was using RSDlite, loading the "zomgunlock" sbf file, put my phone into rsd mode plugged it in, pressed start and next thing i know it turned off and won't turn back on. Can someone help me?

Hi,
I am a NOOB but was reading another post that had a similar problem. Not sure how to make a link to it.
The issue the other fellow had was that when he plugged in to the USB port it was actually draining his battery rather than charging it.
There are specific drivers on the Moto website that you need for the computer to charge the phone.
The short way around it is to charge at the wall.
The title of the post I am referencing is "[SOLVED] Atrix will not power on, green light flashes, plugged in and.... nothing!" initially posted 24th Feb 2011 last post was today.
If your issue is more complicated than this then I apologise for wasting your time.
Worst case no further harm done.
I'm pretty sure my battery is pretty good atm but I'll try anything to get my atrix working again
That happened to me when I was trying to flash the unlock bootloader for mine. I'm using the Atrix on Orange running on U4_4.2.0. Completely bricked with the same green light but nothing happening. Told Orange and got a new one luckyly, next day!
Yea well im on my second from at&t bcuz of a hardware problem, unless I'm able to get a third one. .i ned to find out how to fix this, and the battery charger method didn't work for me

USB port on a computer won't drain a connected device. Problem there was he was trying to charge a drained battery on USB 2.0 which doesn't supply enough power to charge properly. The solution to his problem was to charge with the proper Motorola AC wall charger.
Yea I know but I tried the fixes anyway since there was no harm
If it's an AT&T phone take it to a repair center and they will replace it if its less than 1 year old. You don't even need the crappy insurance.
I thought it's only me
I have same problem, googled it 2 days ago - noboday else reported it
same problem - flashed the unlock-able boot-loader - phone turn off, and died...
I progressed a bit more - after replacing battery with a fully charged one, just to find out it's not a battery issue - I prepared the "special cable" - pin 4 connected to VCC.
now - my phone does recognize my phone, as "APX". after providing drivers found in google - it now recognized as "NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery driver for mobile devices".
it doesn't really help, as RSDlite is still not recognizing it, and using NVflash - i get only errors...
I know - i didn't really helped to solve the problem, as I'm "stuck" with it too, just wanted to share my effort...

Don't know if you want to do this, but you can open the phone and disconnect and reconnect the battery connector...
What was your battery level, I know in other devices some times the CPU(s) run at full speed in recovery allowing for quicker flashing this could discharge the battery rapidly. Also a flashing red LED when plugged in normally means the phone is charging but doesn't have enough charge to reliably turn on, leave it plugged in for about 15 minutes and try turning it on again.
Try holding down the VOL + and - keys along with the powerbutton (after turning it off by holding down the power button for an extended time) and see if you can get into fastboot. My friend's Nexus 4 kept bootlooping after he unlocked the bootloader but booted straight to CWM after, not letting it erase userdata first.

I've got the exact same issue. Plugged it in last night to charge and this morning it wouldn't turn on. Plugged and unplugged it and the red LED starts flashing. After a minute or so I'm getting the battery charge animation on the screen - so the red LED is power related. Now to see if it actually charges up and boots.
Hi nycbjr. I have seen a similar issue posted here, but I can't find the thread at the moment, try searching. If I remember correctly then he got it working by holding power, volume keys and then plugging in the charger.

hard brick??

good day all, few questions for you's
how do i know if my 5603 is hard bricked.?
the phone was being used to text when it just died..wont reboot or get detected by win7 or 8 both with drivers for adb etc..(i have an ion and am good with flashing roms, cwm etc..) no matter what pc or laptop i use when i plug the phone in pc see it as just usb device for about 4 secs..
then its disconnected..
idk much about the led light on bottom its flashing twice quickly for about 4 or 5 times then stops..sometimes lol
have tried sus and pcc with proper technics and no go phone just wont be seen by windows...needless to say in flashtools it just says device maybe in mtp mode but cant change that setting cause phone wont boot..
any ideas? is phone a brick? thanks all
and apologizies if im in the wrong forum can a mod move if necessary thanks
the phone nvr vibrates whether trying to boot into factory recovery if any or any other time.nvr
when plugged into wall charger, at first led(bottom strip light) is red then goes out, if i unplug it it starts to flash repeatedly?
and sometimes no led at all when plugged in..
If it just randomly died In a normal situation (not flashing anything) and the red light flashes it might indicate that the battery died

Something similar happened to me a few weeks ago when I had mine in recovery. I got distracted, and the battery was completely drained. Leave it plugged in, see what happens. Sometimes it takes a while for the LED to show up.
thanks for the help
phone had never been touched totally stock...have had it unplugged for a week or so at least and been on charger for almost 12 hrs
has me stumped..thanks again.
so heres where im at with this phone
pc still wont recognize it..only as a usb device and only for about five seconds then it disconnects..
if i plug it into wall charger, it flashes once red quickly then turns BRIGHT red and goes to normal red for five minutes then the light goes out for two minutes and the whole process is repeated from the quick flash to steady red for five...
any ideas?
still no vibrating at all
Hi,just a thought-duff/dying battery?Does it go thru the charging cycle at all when connected to p.c. I wonder, best and I hope I'm wrong.

[Q] N4 doesnt turn on. Red Light blinks once.

Hello.
When I try to turn on my N4, I hold power button, and after about 10 seconds Red light blinks (just once, if it's connected to USB that 1 blink last for 3 seconds, if connected to wall, it's just quick 1 blink. If it not connected anywhere there is no action at all, it just stays dead, no blinks, nothing). Same if I try to go in bootloader by holding volume down+power.
This happened after I successfully installed CM12, with no errors. Then I rebooted my phone, and it just stayed black as it is now. Battery was around 25~30% that time, and phone was connected to USB.
Did I bricked my phone totally? I am now trying to charge it up already for 1 hour... but it nothing changes.
I have searched here for similar problems, but couldn't find solution...
Edit: Charging already for 10h+ , still same..
Edit2: I removed battery, reconnected after a while, still same problem.
So I tested it with multimeter, it says 2.6V, but fully charged must be 3.8V. Could this be a problem? I was charging it for whole night.
Edit3: I just got new battery . But it looks the same.. phone doesn't boot up.. same red light blinks once.. so.. its my phone is dead? I can't believe that...
When I connect to PC usb, there are unrecognized deviced called "QHSUSB_DLOAD".
easy fix
Hold down the power button and the volume down button at the same time until phone reboots. If you see the little android no need to worry just let go and wait for your device to reboot on its own. This is not a factory reset it's just like restarting your device. :good:

I have tried that many times. Nothing. It's bootloader screen, but I can't get there. Nothing happens. If I keep holding volume down+power it just keep blinking once every ~10 seconds, same if I hold just power button. If phone is not connected to charger, there are no blinks at all.

I had the same problem a year ago, I tried to remove the battery, charging all night, and other solutions that I found online and no one worked.
Finally I found here in XDA a user with the same problem and his solution was charger the phone with a wireless charger, a friend of mine has one and I put the phone to charge and after a few minutes the screen goes on and the phone was charged, then I press power button and the nexus run again.
Hope this works.
Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Spain.
Good luck.
(I bought a wireless charger in case it happen again)
I don't know anyone with wireless charger. I already ordered a new battery, and then I probably will get wireless charger also. Ty.
But this problem is very weird if you think so.. I think it happened because of many aspects together:
1) Battery was already below 30%
2) I pretty regularly charge phone with USB (won't do it again)
3) It was connected to PC USB in same time.
4) I installed CM12 ROM in same time
So main reason I think is USB, that I restarted phone while it was on pretty low battery and with USB connected.. phone restarted and got invalid voltages and couldn't even boot up or charge phone. I also found an article which says, minimum voltage, when phone battery has 0%, it's 3.0V, so I was below that.. it just screwed everything and battery died. Well, I am not sure for 100% that it's battery fault, but I hope so, I really love my N4 and still wanna use it for long time, I hope it's not dead phone, just a dead battery. Lets see! I will update this thread , when I get my new battery (less than month probably).
Sorry, my english is also not perfect. I am from Latvia.
I was playing when it happened to me. The phone was very very hot and the battery was around 70%. When I put in the wireless charged and I can reboot the phone the battery was at 65%, so it had charge but the phone won't boot.
I charge my phone almost every day, sometimes with AC, others with USB (plugging to PC) or wireless that depends of my needs
I hope you can fix it. Good luck.
Btw. Do you know if battery charges with wireless charger, if it's removed from the phone?
Don't think it does, since the receiving coils for wireless charging are located just behind the glass back.

The battery will charge with a NCF Charger
Major Issue Google
This "Nexus SOD" issue is showing up on many sites across the Internet. I have multiple "Nexus" devices including 2 Nexus 4, 1 Nexus 5, 2 "Nexus 7 2013". It suddenly started out of the blue with one of my Nexus 4 phones. Symptoms included rapid battery discharge. I am using Lollipop 5.1 on all devices. There are many claims as to the cause, Hardware Motherboard, Power Button etc. Others claim it is "Software Related" or App Related. The problem effects Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 phones. I have ordered a new motherboard for my nexus 4 device and see if that makes a difference.
This problem should warrant a "Major Android Lollipop Crisis Team" by Google to investigate the cause and let us know what it is and what Google is doing to solve the problem before moving to announce "Android M". This issue needs to brought up and actively pursued at the upcoming "Google I/O Conference" by the strong Android Developers Groups to press for "Formal Action"

I had this problem a long time ago and my fix worked for me after doing a little research it seems like this is a case called battery total discharge. The fix was simply to charge your phone using the wall adapter that came with your phone (I still use my old apple cube wall thing) and to wait for the red light to appear then wait about ten minutes before trying to reboot.
I just got new battery . But it looks the same.. phone doesn't boot up.. same red light blinks once.. so.. its my phone is dead? I can't believe that...

Maybe this video will help you: Oh I´m not allowed to post links until now.

I have checked all kind of videos there. Also that one. Most of these cases are related to battery, but it seems in my case it isn't. I just searched for QHSUSB_DLOAD unrecognized device, all posts says it means phone is bricked... But cmon, how? I installed CM12, successfully, without any errors, then just restarted phone, and its dead...

Also check that the power button works
This case should be solved

Just tried booting without battery, and connecting to wall. Same - red light blinks once, after I hold Power button or Power+Volume down for about 15 seconds. If I keep buttons pressed, it just repeats every ~15 seconds.
Power buttons works fine.
After I checked that Device manager thing in google.. it looks very bad.. phone is dead.. probably need to change motherboard. I am just shocked, how this could happen... I didn't receive any errors during CM12 installation. Phone just instantly died after restart.
