Can't do anything in recovery mode... going crazy! - G1 General

okay I'm trying to root and install cyanogenmod on my phone using these directions... from wiki cyanogenmod...when I get down to flashing radio, I enter recovery mode and can't do anything. Just the phone and exclamation point... pls help its driving me crazy!!

not sure what guide you are following but you flash radio from fastboot not recovery.

In order to flash radio using zip file (not recommended, because it can brick your phone) you'll have to flash Amon RA.
The best method is to use the fastboot as Sleepy2 mentioned.

Thanks for the replies guys. I thought I had actually flashed Amon RA. Can anyone post link on how to use fastboot. All this searching is driving me crazy. I'm trying to get it rooted so I can get rid of it.

At this point I have to do something. I downgraded to 1.0 as cyanogenmod instructuctioins say, but thats about all I have accomplished. I phone was so much easier to jailbreak and unlock

We could go along like this forever but I am already getting bored with it. So how about you provide some information.
What guide are you following?
What is your current SPL and Radio?
What recovery do you currently have?

lulz... nevermind, I'm slowly getting it... I'm not done yet.. seems like I go from one problem to another though. I'm starting over and trying it again. Thanks so much though, I'm sure I'll have more questions.

@ jnralp00 - Please provide the information requested, so we can help you better.

i've been there before.. not sure if you figured it out yet but if you still using recovery to root follow this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR0HpUVv-BY i used this back when i didnt understand fastboot and it was actually real simple. just note that if your on 1.6 you need to downgrade to 1.5 theres a link on how to do that in the description of that video.. and also when you get the G1update.zip from that link you need to rename to update.zip (just delete G1 from the title) and also after you complete that method you need to flash the Danger spl which you can find 100's of links on how to do that here on xda.
on a second note: AFTER you flash "danger spl" there is a simple way to get your G1 to the current radio and hboot 2.22.28.25, 1.33.0013d also by using recovery.. i know its not recommended by most devs but if your unsure of fastboot and adb and stuff i would use it.. just be careful and follow directions exact!! remember you need the danger spl first before upgrading your radio or you can seriously brick your phone and that would just suck!!
hope this helps and if you have any questions at all feel free to ask before you do something your unsure of.. i will be more than happy to guide you in the right direction..

Rooting from Donut

So I'm assuming that the "One Click Root" method is not going to work in Donut. Is that correct?
If so, I'll need to downgrade to Cupcake first. Does anyone have a download link? Is there anything I need to do before applying the update.zip to downgrade?
Thanks for your support

Go read the many stickies on rooting. You don't downgrade to Cupcake, you downgrade all the way back to RC29.

Your suggestion doesn't make any sense since there are plenty of devices that shipped with 1.5 (i.e. rogers dream), which happen to be quite incompatible with 1.0 firmware. It is therefore impossible to downgrade to rc29.
If you're *very lucky*, the bootloader you have won't enforce versions and might actually allow downgrading to 1.5, in which case the 1c-root procedure will work.

Sorry. It's a US T-Mobile G1
I would like to know the answer to this too. I was updating to 4.1.999, something went wrong and now im on 1.6 dev phone firmware. Im not sure if i can go back to rc29 or not or if i should even try. Won't going back to RC29 with the new SPL brick my phone?
(Current) Details are
G1 / Dream phone
firmware 1.6
hard SPL
Build: dream_devphone-userdebug 1.6 DRC83 14721 test-keys
Normal recovery console
Thanks
HardSPL won't brick phones, not to the same degree as dangerSPL anyways.
If you have a REAL SPL (i.e. Engineering, or Hard -- can't imagine why anyone would want that though since it doesn't offer any real advantage over Engineering), then there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to go flashing nbh's/downgrade to rc29. The reason for this is that these bootloaders do NOT enforce signatures, and DO allow full access to the system. The only reason for going to rc29 is if you have a RECENT VERSION UNHACKED device that is CARRIER BRANDED (and happens to be compatible).
If you have Engineering SPL or similar, then the ONLY thing that nbh's will do is RISK CREATING A BRICK.
Yes, you can brick *any* time you write an NBH, IPL, or SPL (not just the deathspl). Chances are low, but if something goes wrong, its dead.

OK cool. Thanks for that. That confirms a few things for me.
Now this might seem a little ignorant but how do i get my root back now? I have done several searches but couldn't really find anything that confirms the exact method for this situation.
If there is no reason to go back to RC29 and do that whole process again then whats the other way of doing it?
As i now have the normal recovery console back any attempt to try and flash CM's just results in the phone telling me i cant su (or don't have root)
Thanks again
Sounds like you have acess to fastboot with your spl you could use fastboot to flash cyanogen's or whichever recovery image you choose, then you would be able flash any rom's you would like through recovery

Do you already have fastboot installed on your pc?? If not a simple search of theese forums can yield you instructions on setting up fastboot. Once you have it installed you can open up a terminal and go the directory in which your recovery image is stored and run the command
fastboot flash recovery cm-recovery1.4.img assuming you're using cyanogen's recovery

OolonColuphid - Hope i didn't hijack your thread too badly. Does any of the above information help you out at all? I found it fairly easy to flash the recovery from fastboot then flash back to whatever i want via the recovery console.

Alright, I've been doing some reading up on rooting and it sounds interesting. I tried following the steps on theUnlockr.com but keep running into issues. Just FYI, I recently upgraded to 1.6 Donut from 1.5 thru a phone update so it is NOT stock in my phone. Please let me know what I need to do (in lamens terms) so I can get this going.

You're phone is still considered stock because it has unmodified software on it, even though you have 1.6 it's through the official OTA update whether installed manually or recieved in due time over your network. You can root your phone, pretty much just follow the steps outlined in this guide found on theese forums

Regaining Root with New SPL

I have a quick, simple question that I have tried searching for:
I lost root trying to upgrade to the newest Cyanogen (I think I rebooted when I wasn't supposed to). I am unable to get into fastboot as my computer will not recognize the drivers. I have also lost my recovery image. I have Haykuro's SPL (.005) and wanted to reroot using the DREAIMG RC29 process. My question is: is this possible with the new SPL? Do I have to go back to the HardSPL or can I just downgrade to RC29? I know that I can not change the radio version at this point... I just need to regain root without ADB/Fastboot!
If someone can point me in the right direction or help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Don't flash the RC29.. it contains an old radio and you'll brick. I think the best thing you can do is revert to the original hardspl, then flash RC29 and root again from scratch.

After researching this issue, I am seeing that some people say that you cannot downgrade the SPL...while others say you can.
So, I'm at the point where I just want to unroot and reroot from scratch. Can I safely downgrade my SPL without bricking?

You can downgrade the spl but not the radio. The problem exists in the communication between radio image and spl.. Haykuro's SPL is only compatible with that one special radio version, anything else will brick it.. but all the other spl's will work with any radio version.
So yes, in this situation you can (and must) downgrade the spl before you try to go back to RC29.

If you can't flash from there you really need fastboot.. Come to think of it I'm not even sure how to flash an spl from fastboot...
Err.. I'm mildly stumped. Anyone..? lol

What problem are you having getting fastboot to work, there is a guide on setting up fastboot stickied in theese forums that would be a good reference point to getting it to work. Flashing the spl can be dangerous and can cause bricking, I would recommend trying to get fastboot up and running then you'd only have to reflash your recovery to either cyan's or Amon Ra's with fastboot, then you would be able to use your update.zip files again.

you can flash the rc29 image just fine.....it overwrites the radio AND the spl

though getting fastboot to work is best option...wouldnt recommend fastbooting spl or radio though
i agree with bman007. i have had to have 2 g1's replaced and the only way they will accept the phone for replacement is if it is on tmobile stock ROMs. All i do is flash the rc29 image. (also change customer boot screen back to default). no issues found with just flashing. Hope this helps.

[Q] RUU for mytouch 1.2

So i went ahead and downloaded the files and rooted the phone, then i went and did the clockwork recovery like an idiot. I downloaded the RUU for it from here and it states it cannot find the phone. Is there a special mode i have to put it into? Can someone give me a little insight here. Thanks
WHAT?
can't understand a thing of what you wrote!
Please more info...
Sorry let me clarify
I went ahead and rooted using the androot program.
After rooting i downloaded rom manager so i could make a nandroid backup.
Now i realized i flashed clockwork recovery onto the phone.
I downloaded the t-mobile official RUU installer and tried to run it. When i connect the phone it is seen but the program cannot see the phone to flash it back to bone stock without the recovery.
Does anyone know how i can flash the bone stock rom and everything else so its like i just removed it from the package.
I hope this clears everything up. Sorry
ok...
The recovery IS NOT the problem...
It's a driver thing...
Delete the drivers on the system, and install the latest htc sync...
It will come with the leatest drivers...
BUT WHY?
why do you want to do the ruu??
Are you not happy with root?
If it's the wronge recovery, you dont need the ruu..
you can just flash a new recovery!!???
WHY?
To be completely honest i love having a rooted phone. I have a rooted vibrant.
I just really dont know what im doing at this point. I already bricked one mytouch and am afraid im going to do something wrong and brick it again. I really just want the RUU to work in case something happens and i have to send it back. If they go into fastboot they are going to know i did something.
Trust me i would love to put amon ra's recovery on it but i have no idea how and cant understand how to do it. I feel lost when it comes to android phones.
I want to put froyo on here but i should wait for the official update.
That is another thing will the rooted phones still take the OTA for the updates when they come out even if rooted.
Sorry if this is a lot of questions, but im just scared to do anything now since i failed the first time around. thanks
OK... i'll help you all the way...
Write here what ruu did you use...
THE FULL name...
Then i'll send you what you need for your device to return to stock condition :0)
After you see that your phone can go back to stock condition we can work our way back to world of root :0)
It's very easy once you use the right img's....
I used this link since im at work, the file is at home.
39) [xda-ftp] [4shared] 2.10.531.4 T-Mobile USA DRD35
Its out of this thread

The drivers i downloaded for win 7 64 i just googled and installed. If there is another driver pack i should get ill try that htc sync when i get home.
I really appriciate the help.
OK... use this link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/413792527/2.10.531.4_T-Mobile_USA_DRD35_ROM.rar.html
I divided the img's into 2 folders...
System = the android system... flashing those will give you stock android on your phone.
Hardware = the stock spl, radio and recovery.
If you only want the system, flash the system using the radioSwitcher tool in my signature... use the custom boot/system/userdata box....
If you ever have to return your phone for repair or just want to be back at stock(complete reset):
Flash all 6 files.... again using the tool..
For the hardware part use the "custom spl/radio/recovery" box...
The only problem is the spl has nb0 extension... so you have to use the fastboot and a cmd promt on windows... type:
fastboot flash hboot hboot_7201A_1.33.0013G_091021.nb0
or you could rename the file to hboot_7201A_1.33.0013G_091021.img and use the tool for all files... but i have never tested the renaming approach!
Good luck!
Ok i got all the files and the radio tool.
I put things where they need to be and just wanted to flash recovery.
When i click flash it fails every time. I cannot find drivers for this thing anywhere. Can i get help on this please. thanks
are you in fastboot?
try "check connection" before flash. What does it say?
Do you have eng spl?
You need to do your homework before doing such a thing like flashing...
I'll help you if you do your homework :0)
here is what i get when connected

How do i just go about using the RUU and forgetting about rooting? I plug it in and click to start the process and it says it cannot find the phone.
Is there a special mode i have to put the phone into to use this tool?
It's a mistake from the tool...
When it sayed that you dont have root, it meant you dont have eng spl...
I'm going to change that in the tool in the next version....
here is something i wrote to somebody else...
Read it and use the info which could help your case..
But here is the headline: Flash spl(1.33.2010) using recovery, then flash system files using tool, then flash stock spl using fastboot or rename stock spl to hboot.img and flash using tool!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753972
Good luck...
PS: read the entire thread... the info is spread!
What if i would skip the tool all together and use the fastboot commands to flash the files you sent me in that rar file?
If i just do the recovery i will lose hboot and fastboot correct?
I am so scared to do this. Sorry im a complete noob at this.
Also what is a sapping file? I can make a goldcard no problem and make it work.
Thanks for answering everything since i have not done anything to it what so ever yet.
You cant use fastboot because the spl (which controls the fastboot) will not allow you do that... it's called a perfected spl because HTC has closed all possibilities for you to flash anything.
That why we use the custom recovery. With a normale recovery we cant do **** either. But custom recovery gives the tools and permissions to do what ever we want.
Thats why i wrote that flash a different spl using recovery, then use the tool or fastboot to flash the rest...
The tool is safer, belive me... we have over 300 or so downloads with no error reports :0)
But if you are comfitable with fastboot, by all means do it there :0)
Just make sure that spl and radio can play together....
When you are done playing with eng spl (eng = engineer spl, leaked from HTC), flash custom spl back again... before you boot your system, or the system will have many disadvanteges.. the eng spl it not made for your device, but it works just fine... just dont load the system with :0)
Whenever you want to play with fastboot again, flash a eng spl from recovery and you game again....
So read my instructions carefully before doing anything...
Read more info around this forum...
When you are ready, do the things i told you!!!!
I can't help you anymore... The rest is up to you...
If you get into problems, please report back...
All the info is here and on the other thread i linked to before... GOOD LUCK

sappimg is complete image of a system with non-pefected spl or custom recovery... you lose everything with a sappimg...
The goldcard is needed because you need to "fool" the device to accept the sappimg even if it is not meant for your device!
But you allready have custom recovery... no goldcard needed!
I am so confused. I'm so sorry

[Q] Lost in the massive amounts of info, please help

So, I rooted my fiances Mytouch 3G original and it's been so long I don't remember what I did. Now theres a one click methods, different numbers 32a and 32b and there's radios and all this other stuff I didn't have to worry about then (I think)
I updated her to the Betamod AOSP using the same method as I would do with my Vibrant and well it works, but the text messaging dictionary is in German and the battery life was horrible so I wanna take her to Yoshi 1.0 RC5.1, so I'm doing all this research to make sure I do it right (part of me wants to brick it so she'll get a new phone, she hates spending money on phones when they work) and she's overdue for a full upgrade.
I'm reading these guides and all these other things and I keep linking and linking and linking and it's kind of overwhelming. I think I had 6 or 7 tabs open before I decided to just start a thread. I wasn't sure if the threads I was reading applied to me. It was very confusing.
Can someone please just point me to the right direction.
I'm assuming with the research and reading I've done is that she needs the 32b roms and her radio and kernal I will have to look at when she gets home. I may need help finding that info, but please let me try and report it first.
I'm sorry if this is an annoying noob post, but if you guys can give me exactly what I need I will read about it.

If it is a 32b you will need to update spl and radio but a link to a guide to that is in the ginger yoshi op. Everthing you need should be in the ginger yoshi op in fact. You can use Amon_Ra for the ext4 part, the thread for installing that is in the same forum as yoshi's just a few threads up. Hope that helps.
Get us the fastboot info and we'll get you taken care of. Is the phone still rooted?

Thanks guys, here's her HBOOT info
32b and S-on
Hboot 1.33.0006
CPLD - 10
Radio 2.22.23.02
I don't know if you need anything else, but yes the phone is still rooted
I'll defer to DonJuan's expertise here but, I think you sould be fine following Yoshi's OP. Ginger Yoshi requires the new radio/spl combo but the steps are all there. If I understand correctly the ext partition is optional but highly recommended and will be required in future releases.
Okay before I proceed, I downloaded
update.Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2010-signed
recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G
Ohsaka-SuperWipe_v2
radio
hboot
These are zips except the Recovery file. I'm gonna put them all on my SD card and flash them in recovery. Then I'm gonna flash the rom.
Good?
Superwipe first
Recovery second
hboot third
engineering hboot fourth
Radio 5th
Then the ROM
Wait, actually where did you get the hboot/radio files from? Need to make sure they're the right one's, but I actually think you may be on the right track.
If I'm not mistaken you shouldn't need the engineering spl if you are going to flash the radio and spl via recovery, you only need it if you are going to use fastboot to install them.
So (Again if I'm not mistaken):
1. Recovery
2. Superwipe
3. Radio
4. Hboot
5. Rom
The guide I used to upgrade my radio/spl seemed simplest, worked great. Sorry I'm not allowed to post links here yet but it is at cyanogenmod.com search for a thread called New radio dream +15MB EXTRA RAM! for HTC DREAM
Look for post by -Stevo- on page 2, he does "Amazing" work.

Should be all set then.
Well did the steps and bricked the phone, it's on an endless loop, it won't flash the ROM for some reason. So I'm happy, we're picking up a new HD7 tomorrow. LOL, I got my wish.
I booted into recovery, did a nandroid, flashed super wipe, flashed radio, flashed Hboot, flashed rom and rom gave me an error. Have no other rom on SD card so I can't do anything else. Nandroid restore doesn't do what I need it to do and won't fix the problem.
Here's what my Hboot says now
Sapphire PVT 32B Ship S-ON G
HBOOT 1.33.0013d
CPLD 10
Radio 2.22.27.08
Oct 21 2009
***Edit***
I forgot to wipe cache before installing ROM, dammit everything is fine! She's asleep now, so maybe I shouldn't tell her the mytouch is working now.

Installing roms

Can someone give me a link or explenation how to install a new rom on my htc magic?
Like how to root, etc etc?
(searched but cant find anything easy :s)
Well, you've certainly come to the right place.
As I've no idea what stage you are at, I'd say a good starting point is discovering what your magic is - turn it off, depress back button while starting phone.
Then begin your searching based upon that info......
I rooted mine following the cyanogenmod wiki. Knew nothing when I did and it worked out fine.
wiki.cyanogenmod.com (still can't post links)
By far, the easiest I've encountered. Still, feel free to ask questions about any of the steps and I'm sure there are a lot of people who'd love to help.
I have a 32A with radio 3.22.20.17 and Hboot 1.33.0009

I've installed the android SDK and the USB thing, I have a Magic from belgium (proximus) that shoudn't need to bee rooted.

You need recovery on your phone and the right radio/hboot. Once you have these the ROM BIBLE on here very useful.
Read everything carefully and don't rush into anything, as the wrong combinations of rom/radio/hboot can easily brick your phone.
With recovery on your phone, and the right radio/hboot, flashing the rom itself via recovery is fairly easy.
You download the rom to your pc, enter recovery and wipe your phone, move your new rom onto the sd card via pc or usb, then flash it onto your phone from the sd card. Obviously there's more to it (such as backing up and more wiping etc) and more detailed explanations are available on this site - this is just to give you an idea of what's required.
The links in Mumilover's signature proved extremely useful to me(see my flashrec confusion post), might be worth you looking having a look to see if any are of use to you as well. Good luck.

Wow, no need for rooting! Have you tried installing a custom recovery image yet? Don't use ClockworkMod as they appear to have problems with 32A magics. Apparently, (according the cyanogenmod wiki) all you have to do is boot into fastboot and type a few things into cmd. BTW, you might have to type in the entire directory of the "recovery.img" you use when you use fastboot. (even if it's in the same folder as fastboot) I'm a noob so it took me a half hour to figure that out.

How to get into fastboot and what do i have to type in cmd?
Go to wiki.cyanogenmod.com and find the step by step process for your specs. If you get the "remote:not allow" message while flashing a recovery then you're probably going to have to change your spl

I know there different methods out there, which I can't speak off, excuse me being biased but I have to say mumilovers fastboot commander was amazingly easy for me. In your case use the fastboot commander (magic version) in his signature. You simply download the commander, connect your phone via usb and enter fastboot (turn off phone, depress back button while starting phone up). You then have the ability via the commander to add recovery, change radio and change spl in simple clicks. Please note s-off/eng hboot is required (which you will find details of in fastboot) - which is why I can't use it anymore!!
you then can go off and change roms
