Hey I'm mostly looking for suggestions here. I'm a US TMO customer. I bought a MyTouch 3G on ebay, it seems to work fine using the SIM from one of my other phones. I called TMO and they're sending me the unlock code.
When I get to London, I'm planning to buy a prepaid SIM and pop it in. Does anybody have any experience or recommendations in terms of who I should get it from, TMO UK, Orange, Virgin, etc? Which one if any will give me 3g data, and how will I know the Access Point info to get the data working?
Thanks!
MC
A Google search will get you the APN settings once you decide on a carrier. For data, you just need to make sure whatever carrier you goes with uses the correct 3G band for the myTouch. I'm pretty sure Vodaphone (if its offered) will work fine off the top of my head. Again, you can get the correct bands from searching.

I live in the US and I have a trip planned to London, Paris and Rome in May. I own a T-mobile G1 and was wondering what my best option was for using my G1 in those cities. I know there are a lot of European users here on XDA so I was hoping somebody could give me some advise from experience. I do realize that the 3G won't work over there no matter what I do.
Thanks for any and all help!

3G should work fine. When you get there, buy a local prepaid simcard.
You need to unlock it first, call T-Mo and tell them what you just posted and they will give you the unlock code.
Your best bet for London (once you've got the phone unlocked) is a "pay as you go" sim from three. Just put £10 credit on it and you'll get a 150mb, 90day internet allowance. If you need to top it up again you get that allowance renewed every time.
Unless I am mistaking, the phone is rooted and is running a non stock rom, thus it is unlocked. I will look into the prepaid sim cards. Will I have to get a different one for each of the countries/cities?
@lbcoder: are you sure about the 3G? since this is a t-mobile phone I was under the impression that the bands it uses for 3G are only the N. American Bands and would only work over here.
Not unlocked for other networks, you need to get it unlocked to use other networks.

Sim unlock isn't the same thing as root.. You need a code from t-mobile for that. They'll give you one if you tell them what you've told us.

That's going to be the cheapest way to do it.. You'll get brutally raped for roaming charges otherwise. In the UK the cards are usually free, you just have to buy the calling credit.
TMO will give you your SIM unlock code for free if your account has been paid up for 90 days or longer. They take up to 7 days. I had to get this from TMO via my American friend when I bought my G1 off him. There are places online where you can pay $25 or so and get an unlock code within hours. SIM unlock is not the same thing as root.
I'm also just about to go to Europe! Vodafone turned on global roaming for free (I just pay for calls) and they sells packs of roaming data, I got 25Mb for $50, which is way cheaper than their usual rate of $10 per 1Mb! For me this is easier than stuffing round with pre-paid SIM cards, changing number and whatever, I also don't know if a pre-paid SIM gives mobile data access? Give TMO a call and see what they offer.
I will turn off Sync and use DroidWall to make sure stuff doesn't update in the background and use all my allowance. It's really only to update Facebook to let people know I am still alive
Your G1 will most definitely work and use 3G in London. You can grab a T-Mo prepaid SIM from the multiple vending machines in the airport when you arrive in London, and swap it in and start using it immediately. I did exactly this at both Gatwick and Heathrow. Do like the other posters said and call T-Mobile in the US and get the unlock code before you fly. It's free that way. I did that too, and they are cool about it. It took about 24 hours after my request and it was emailed to me. The one thing that confused me at first was my G1 kept asking for a "SIM unlock code" or something like that after I had unlocked it using the T-Mobile code. Turns out it was a security setting that I could disable, to prevent someone from using the phone if they stole it. Two totally different "SIM unlocks". Now I know.
I have someone willing to trade me a Hd2 for my nexus one. I was wondering if I can get the Hd2 to work on ATT . I heard some people getting the unlock codes directly from tmo ole and some people using flashing roms.
is there a tutorial anywhere? I just want to make sure this isn't a laborious task to do.
You need to ask the guy to unlock it from TMobile for you, otherwise it's going to be a huuuge pain for you to do it via TMobile (not to say you couldn't pay to have it done from one of the other services)

Where are you from?
I'll trade mine.
to answer your question, you have to make sure that it is unlocked by inserting your Att sim card during the trade.
It will definitely work, as well as the data (i.e. internet, weather etc. etc..) im just not sure about setting it up during the first run.
The TmoUS HD2 has only 1 network settings(including Data, SMS, MMS settings) in default rom which Tmo US ofcourse. and if it is unbranded (i.e. T8585, you get a whole lot of different networks i.e. At&t etc. etc.)
also, it'll be easier if you get an unbranded HD2, As the Tmo US HD2 is kind of pain for users at the moment.
i am using an unbranded HD2 it works like a charm with At&t.

Data as well? 3g? If so i'm interested in picking one of these up... waiting on the Desire but just might take this insted!
The one you want is the Telstra version-9193, I believe. The T8585 won't work on AT&T 3G but on edge. Even on edge, its pretty fast-or at least mine is. Not many are having luck with tmo unlocking. The 9193 is also rare and expensive in the US.

Just curious what kind of speeds you getting on EDGE have you done any speed testing? I'd love to import the desire but what's keeping me from doing it is being stuck on EDGE and not being able to access 3G speeds...not wanting to pay $30 a month for data thats EDGE only lol!
Thanks for your help...
Picked up an Aria and immediately found I was heading overseas. Managed to get it unlocked and put a new sim in, but now it will not connect to 3G networks. It will connect to edge quite nicely though.
HTC told me that the only way to have 3G access was to have the AT&T sim in the phone. I really doubt that, and after reading the threads on here I think I have come to the right place to find a work around.
So any suggestions or fixes??
If this is something easy please forgive the newb.
If you are still in the United States, are you using T-Mobile? If so then the 3g bands are different from At&t's. It will only connect to edge. Also if you go anywhere outside the US then the same is true.
I would think that were the case if the sim carried the frequency settings but the phone does correct?
I am in Israel and when the AT&T sim is in the unlocked Aria I have 3G, put Cellcoms sim in the Aria and 3G goes away. Now if I put the same Cellcom sim in an unlocked mytouch 3G, well there is 3G again. All of this is happening on the cellcom network by the way. So that tells me that there has to be some setting that AT&T's sim is tripping either when inserted or removed??
Now does that make sense..... Or not?
hmmm... that is a pickle then. I couldn't tell you about that. You might want to contact Cellcom and ask them personally about it. I don't know if there is a settings file that changes that. I know it only comes with two bands and maybe the at&t sim is connecting you to another network that you didn't list and maybe that is the mix up.
Yea sat with one of their guys for 2.5 hours yesterday. Was making him crazy, that is why I broke down and called HTC. Thanks for the input.
att aria 3g freqs 850/1900
tmobile touch3g 3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
looks that cellcom carrier freqs are the same as tmobiles since aria does not support those u wont get 3g just edge

just call customer service in the usa its(was-idk if it still is) a law that companies must unlock upon users request
Nope the law went away...again. They claimed there were no unlock codes yet. I found a place online it was called "HTCsimunlock" I think. Anywho they sent me the code after about 30 min.
BTW. Figured it out have 3G now but only in certain areas with Cellcom. Still working on making it everywhere.
Thanks for the help everybody.
Great, thanks!
I've tried digging around on my own to figure this out, but I haven't found a solid answer, and I really hope someone will help!
Would I be able to take an unlocked T-Mobile MyTouch 3G to Egypt with me and open up a service plan with Vodafone Egypt for local phone and 3G internet?
I hope the answer is simply yes, but here are a few more specific concerns:
1) Is there a difference between being unlocked from HTC and being unlocked from T-Mobile? Are those two separate things? (The one I am looking at says in the description that the unlock code was received and used from HTC, and I just want to make sure that it is really completely unlocked.)
2) Can I stroll into a Vodafone Egypt store with my unlocked T-Mobile MyTouch 3G and buy a plan for local Egyptian phone and 3G internet? In other words, does Vodafone Egypt require one of their official phones, with the Vodafone logo on the top, for them to treat me like a normal customer? (I am going to be in Egypt working as a teacher for the school year, and I would like to take out a contract just like a normal resident for the year if I can.)
3) Will an unlocked T-Mobile MyTouch 3G function properly on the Vodafone Egypt network? Are there any technical or software differences between the United States MyTouch 3G and the Vodafone Magic that might pose a problem for phone or 3G use?
4) Now I'm getting greedy, but here's one more question: Will any phone that is technically specified to work in Vodafone Egypt's network (proper band frequency, 3G capable) be eligible for a normal local Egyptian phone and 3G plan from Vodafone Egypt as described above? Or will it only work for phones that are specifically listed as part of Vodafone Egypt's current line-up?
Thank you in advance for your help!

1) No difference, it's either SIM locked or it isn't.
2) Yeah you should be able to get a SIM only plan which is meant for any phone. Only thing is they probably wont have the exact apn settings for the Magic (I don't think Voda sell the Magic in egypt), only generic ones but they will still work.
3) Just find out the bands the MT3G and Vodafone Egypt uses...

Awesome, thanks for the help. Egypt is 3G 2100 so I think I'm good!
Assuming I unlock the att g2 will I be able to get data on it and call, same with the verizon g2. Id be using a local carrier whos gsm is 900. i need an answer asap
Should do.
Where are you going? As you might need to make sure the local area sim is the right frequency's. But I'm sure it will.
Im from uk and i have always thought they had non removable sim cards in verizon.

The gsm frequency there is 900, its lebanon btw. also latest verizon phones have sim cards. Im afraid if i get the att g2 then calling will work but internet ( 3g or h+ ) wont work because i checked on atts site if their lg g2 will work in lebanon and it only said that voice will work and data will not but this is on their network, not a local network so I have no idea. I know the att g2 works on a gsm 900 frequency but does voice and internet come from this frequency or does the phone use another type of frequency to get internet. Or am i good to go even if only the gsm is compatible.
