G1 DREAM 32B - USB Bricked - G1 General

I got my phone used so I do not have much info following up to my problem, but here's some info none the less.
I got my phone in dec.2010. Rooted and updated to Cyanogenmod 6.1 the same day. The very first time I plugged my phone into USB it recogized it. Afterwards in Windows 7 32bit I kept getting "usb device has malfunctioned". What I really found odd was that when the phone is turned off and plugged into usb I get the "usb device has malfunctioned" error. I am continuously changing to the new roms - currently COS Gingerbread 4122011. My phone IS recognized through fastboot, in recovery I get the same previous errors, in the OS my computer doesn't even notice that I plugged anything into it. I have seen on google about Desire users having corrupted 'misc' partitions (MTD0). Is this a possibility? If no one knows, post me a link of your misc partition from your fully functioning USB G1 and I will test it.
Goto console or terminal emulator and enter
Cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/mtd0.img
Then post a link to the img.
I hope to get this figured out, I hate having to transfer files and roms wirelessly.
Thanx everyone XDA-Developers. ×D

Correction
Cat > /dev/mtd/mtd0 /sdcard/mtd0.img
There is also an mtd0ro in /dev/mtd as well.
I created both but have no way to 'post a link'
So, I'm just passing on the correction for others

Have you try to use the usb driver removal tool? And re-install the google usb driver?

Phil - thanx for the correction.
Been - yes I have used "usb deview". I removed every usb driver, pulled mobo battery on my desktop to reset the chipset, I've used 2 stock usb cords, 1 moto usb cord, and 1 generic fat usb cord. No avail. Thanx for looking at my post.

Something that I found that you might want to take a look.
http://www.ntcompatible.com/Desperately_need_help_---_USB_Devices_Not_Recognized_t32356.html
See if this will help your problem.

thanx for the link, but that is the same process I've been trying for weeks now. I do believe I may have corrupted something in mtd0.
The only place usb works correctly is in fastboot, and my computer detects it immediately.
Also in 'dmesg' I see SMDxxxxx errors, not flooding just during startup, it says "smem find (14, 40) wrong size 16242" and other similar messages, SMD_DATA1 - SMD_DATA7 SMD_DS SMD_RPCCALL SMD_DATA11 SMD_GPSNMEA SMD_DATA5_CNTL - SMD_DATA7_CNTL. I will try to post my dmesg when I get to my desktop.
Edit: Thank You Philip for sending me your .img files. I see you have a Rogers Dream. Unfortunately editing the image for my device CID and flashing the image using this command : flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd0.img Yielded the same results. Without adb I cant post my dmesg. I also noticed when hex editing the img files, my mtd0.img had a line "NBHLoadsuccess" where the Rogers did not have that line, everything else looks the same.
Here is a link to a post from a Desire forum, about USB Brick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6641266#post6641266
I know alot about Android, but I do not know if I can edit the Desire image and flash it to my G1. I am also not sure if maybe a patch has been applied to the img file in the post. I am getting very frustrated with my G1. Although I do truly love my phone COS Gingerbread is the best.

Sorry about that. My phone is cyan 6.1.0 the 2708 version, perhaps that's the mod you're seeing.
About the nbh tag you found, isn't nbh the stock rom?
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App

I do believe .nbh is stock rom extension.
I'm now thinking about downgrading and unrooting. Then Re-root and upgrade in hopes to fix this.
Here is my setup
SPL: 0013d
Radio: 2708
Recovery: Amon Ra V1.7
Rom: Cos Gingerbread 4122011
CID: T-MO010

That sound like the best way to go.

Yep, that's exactly what I would do in your situation
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App

OK, so after unrooting and downgrading my USB still only has function through fastboot. I downgraded to RC29 and nothing. I am stumped, if fastboot works I would not think that my USB hardware is going bad. Anybody else have an idea?

Still no luck. I have read through my "dmesg" and compared it to my brothers "dmesg" - he has a 32A Magic 1.2, but everything looks the same and he has full USB function.

Really nobody has this problem?

Just filling time

one more post and I can post in development.

I am still having this problem. Maybe someone in development will have some insight.

I have noticed that the first time my phone is connected to a computer ( as in the first time ever) Windows will atleast tell me "a device has malfunctioned". Then if disconnected and reconnected windows doesn't recognize that anything has been connected, I have my Device Manager window open while plugging and unplugging, no response. My phone charges fully from USB or AC.

Same problem
I am having a similar problem. My G1 works fine except for USB. USB does not even work in fastboot mode. When I plug it into the PC (more than one, XP and Win7) the connection shows USB\\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&64DAA3C&0&1.
I had this problem before I upgraded to Cyan6 from 1.6. I hoped the upgrade would fix it but it did not.

Flash a rom in recovery

I still have not found a solution. I have flashed many roms, froyo by lazlo, cos ds by roalex, biffmods leaving on a jet plane, and others, still the same outcome. I have gone as far as unrootin and rerooting, tried all combinations for radio and hboot. Fastboot still works over usb tho.
I also noticed that in my dmesg when I plug in USB it thinks it is on AC.

My HTC Hero CDMA Cellular South, the USB doesnt work what so ever. When I plug it in I get no message or sound of it connecting and it just starts charging. Its a stock ROM, on 2.1.... any help? I have tried rooting the device before but quit before doing any flashing of the ROM because of the lack of information of the tutorial I was following. Please guys I really want my usb back
So your phone charges when its plugged in? But you cannot connect it to your computer to mount the sdcard. You may want to try running the RUU in fastboot mode.

Could you tell me what exactly this does and how I can do it? RUU im pretty sure is the updater, am I updating the ROM again to maybe fix the problem?
Update: I checked the USB cable and swapped in a different cable and everything is working just fine. Sometimes it's the simple things!
I'm having the same problem on my Sprint Hero, running CM6 with Kernel #14. I just loaded kernel #14 last night and this is the first time I tried to use USB access.
It's like it's not connected to the computer...but it is charging.
Ive already tried a differnt usb port and cable so, how can I reflash my rom without usb support?

You might want to look through manage applications in settings or some where in settings and clear the default for what to do when you plug your phone in.
Do you have a wireless router. You could install adbwireless from the market and get stuff to and from your phone.
Have you tried it on a different computer
You might want to delete the drivers on the computer for your phone, reboot computer and then plug the phone back into the computer and let it load the drivers.

I just hard reset the phone and still nothing...
When you connect your phone and do
Code:
adb devices
do you get anything?
I had this very same problem a few weeks ago. I was using the original usb cable that came with the phone when i got it back in march. Simply trying a new "stronger" looking cable did the trick for me.
Although, I think you have already tried this.

Re phone drivers (not windows)

My glacier is not being recognized by my pc. I have reinstalled all of the windows drivers from HTC, rebooted pc, tried a different usb port, even tried re-flashing the CM7/RC4 update, but the problem persists.
My next option would be to wipe/reset-reflash-then restore settings. But if I do that, I want to make I sure I don't accidentally restore the corrupt file... Does anyone know where this phone driver (or the file that is causing this error) is on the phone so I can avoid restoring it?

That issue has nothing to do with your phone unless the actual usb port went bad.
This is definitely a computer issue.

Well, its not like I have any reason to not believe you, but, I guess thinking it has to do wih the phone gives me a bit more hope.
Honestly, I don't know what could have happened. It was working fine maybe a week ago, and now no matter what I do, windows says its not recognized...specifically windows says "device not recognized, try re-plugging the device back into the usb port. If it continues to not work, replace the device" (yeah right...i think I will pass on windows' suggestion in this case).
I have also tried reinstalling the usb laptop filters/drivers too. I am thinking it has to be something obvious because I have not done anything unusual since it worked properly.

So do you have the SDK set up then? You can also try setting up adb with the method found in my signature. Have you tried a battery pull and then see if your device is recognized through adb?

Do you mean just pull out the battery, but plug in the (mini) USB and try and get adb to work?
By the way, its not adb exactly which had the problem. ,Its just that suddenly, windows is stating it doesn't recognize the device..(code 43 in device manager properties). I didn't do anything (i don't think), and its driving me crazy. I have not pulled the battery yet, but I have retried just about every other driver install/reinstall.

Just pull out the battery and put it back in and power up.
So when you say it wont recognize it, you mean as a external storage device then? That could be a SDcard issue but sounds like a PC issue. First thing I would do is see if your device is recognized in adb. Follow the link in my signature if you dont allready have adb set up. That should tell you if your usb is functioning also. If that all goes well, I would check your SDcard and make sure your issue isnt there.
Ok... Just ask me... No, it its not recognized in ADB, nor is windows liking it.
Windows sometimes says "USB DEVICE HAS malfunctioned". When trying PDANet drivers, I get error =103. I dint know how ADB FEELS as there is no feedback, but I have started ADB, ran adb devices, nothing listed, I have toggled USB debugging just to see what would happen, and I can tell the device us being disconnected and reconnected (based on audible alert), but otherwise, same as always.
I am starting to think it is the SD. And that maybe I dropped it a few feet on to the carpet or something mild like that, and I need to re-seat the SD. Sound logical?

I don't seem to be making any progress whatsoever. I really need to get this phone recognized because I ned to do some boot animation and splash screens
As said, I have tried everything possible with driver installation and uninstallation, both using revo-uninstaller and the device manager. Does anyone think it might possibly be the phone our could this only be a windows issue?
Does anyone have any more possible suggestIons?

Rooted Evo will not connect to PC

I rooted my Evo with unrevoked3 a few months ago and since then (or sometime after) my phone will not connect to my PC. It will charge but that's it. I checked off the ask me every time I connect option, it's set to mount as disk drive. I am using the stock usb cable that came with the phone. I tried hard resetting, data wiping back to factory default. Still won't connect. Tried reinstalling HTC Sync. Doesn't recognize my phone being plugged in. I want to flash my phone back to stock so I can bring it back to Sprint but I can't bring it back rooted and I can't unroot it without using the PC. I have Googled and Googled all over but can't find an answer. I did a search here and there are similar problems but no solutions that have worked for me. Could it be the cable? It is in good condition as is the phone. Maybe the USB port on the phone? Those went bad on all my Blackberries. I'm sure this problem is expressed frequently but a response would make my day.

I am assuming you have a windows based PC.
Do you have any device driver conflicts in your windows Device Manager? I'd start there. Your computer wouldn't properly reconize your phone if you have some sort of conflict or you don't even have the right drivers installed.
Broken usb is a known issue with EVO, something about how it is soldered onto the motherboard. Are you running a custom ROM or kernel?
Have you tried mounting it in Recovery? You can always use a MicroSD card adapter to transfer files. I just use Dropbox.
You can unroot without your PC. Just download everything on your phone.
Download the S-On tool from Unrevoked. Flash it in Recovery. Check to make sure phone is S-On
Download the PC36IMG.zip restore to your phone, there is a thread with it in Development. Use Astro/Root Explorer to move the PC36ING.zip to the base of your SD card.
Go into HBoot and it will recognize it. It'll ask if you want to update, say yes. Let it sit and do its thing.
There is a guide in q&a about unrooting

Yes, Windows based PC.
So I downloaded the S-On tool, moved it to the root of my card with Super Manager, then flashed it. Says S-On at boot. I rebooted my phone, moved the PC136zip to the root of the sd card. Rebooted with down vol + power and it checks for pc136zip but doesn't ask anything. I tried zipping it in recovery and it says bad. I tried another download site and did the same thing, doesn't recognize it upon hboot, so I tried zipping from sdcard, selected it, it quickly said some text about updating then nothingness. How do I know if it unrooted?
Edit: Also, I checked my device manager on my pc but it didn't show anything wrong.
Install terminal and type su
You will get permission denied if not rooted.
I have a working PC36IMG.zip in my Dropbox, if you need it tell me and I'll PM you a link
if u think ur phone is broke cuz u cant connect to pc after u rooted it, it isnt broke at all. my phone did the same thing after i rooted it. I don't remember exactly cuz it was a while ago, but u may have to turn on usb debugging in settings before it will recognize it. also u can go into recovery and mount usb to write to it
It might have to do with the drivers you have to install when you run unrevoked. It has been a while, but I am pretty sure I had to install a special USB driver to run unrevoked.

I had this happen to my phone last week after I used my computer to root two other peoples phones.
It makes no sense really, but while in recovery I connected to the computer to move a few files to the phone, and after that it was able to connect whether in recovery or not.
See if your phone can make the connection while in recovery.
Ok, so I brought the phone to Sprint after trying a different USB cord and they said the port is damaged. My new phone arrived today but I need to get my phone back to stock ASAP. I got it back to S-On but when I attempt the pc36img flash it says...
SD Checking....
Loading... [PC36DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading... [PC36DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading... [PC36IMG.zip]
Then the black bar loads.
Then it says.
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
I hit yes.
I still have SuperUser Permissions.
I've downloaded a few different pc36img.zip from different pages and this happens every time.
Edit: Probably wondering how I did this without a USB. I bought an SD Card reader and transferred everything through PC.
Try this.
1. Plug your usb cable into the computer.
2. Plug your usb cable into the phone.
3. Wait and listen for the little sound that tells you that the computer sees it.
4. Unplug your USB cable from the phone and wait about 2 seconds.
5. Plug the USB cable back into the phone, listen for the sound, then look at the computer monitor.
On mine, I have to do this to make the autorun window pop up running Windows Vista.
Shot in the dark, but thought it might help.
Noise doesn't happen. USB port is damaged, noise will never happen.
On the upside,
(I don't have 8 posts yet or I would show the download image) Updated version of PC36IMG.ZIP that worked. Just rename to pc36img and it unrooted my phone.
I'm having this same problem. Now, In this case, I hear the noise. Then a second double noise (like when you unplug the usb) This happens whether I am in recovery or not. Also, oddly enough, the thing works on my mac. It's done this through several different ROMS Right now I'm using synergy (which is great btw). I'm really at a loss here. Anyone got any other ideas? Like where I can find it in device manager. There are like 9 "root usb" devices
*edit* Also, I'm using window's XP proffessional. I've tried some trouble shooting but nothing is really working. Also it's being assigned a disk letter when connected, during the short time (like less than a second) when the disk pops up it says removable disk. I timed it and it's being assigned H, but it's being ejected almost immediately.
I think it has something to do with power being supplied in the cord. Maybe something to do with kernal? I dunno. But I plugged it into a usb port in the back of my pc, and it read it : /

USB problem with HTC Desire HD

Hey guys,
I currently recently installed a custom ROM from this website and for some reason now when I plug in my USB into my PC it comes up not being detected so when I put my phone as hard drive so I want to transfer music, it doesn't detect it. Can anybody help me if this is ROM problem or just my USB?
Hey,
Okay I disabled USB debugging didn't know it was on, still doesn't work says windows cannot find USB device not reconginzed when I connect the USB. For the Reinstalling usb driver I do not know how to this ~?
i have the same problem.. turn "fast boot" off and restart the phone.. this always works for me.. hope this helps
Hey, I turned fastboot off. Doesn't work. I ordered new usb cable.. hopefully this works and it was just a fault with the cable!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Usually this is a problem with the cable. Simple, cheap to fix. Keep your old cable around for charging though (nice to have a spare)
Is this problem with the USB still active?
If so try a different PC just in order to eliminate WinOS issues.
If not close.
Hi,
I have the same problem at some months ago. I tried the cable and pfone on another PC, and it works fine. So, I recommend to try it on another PC and reinstall your Windows.

Had the same propblem! Turns out it was the usb cable, it charged fine with the cable but data transfer didnt work.
i also had the same problem since last week and still cant resolve till now...i try all the option that u gave(change cable/pc,turn off fastboot)....i even sent my phone to shop and they still cant detect.they said maybe the usb port is damage or some software that may block my usb port?is it true? anyone can help?????

USB BRICK in my INSPIRE 4G ( DESIRE HD)
Hi, all
I got a new inspire 4g last week.( equivalent to desire hd ). It was working fine. But now it does not detect the USB connection. It only charges when I connect to pc. No other issues. I have also noticed that during fast boot mode also pc does not recognize the phone as device. I have tried all the suggestion on xda but no luck.
As fastboot is also not detected by PC I could not format mtd0 and reconfigure it.
Can anybody have any other idea? If I change the main board how much cost will incur ??
Thanks all.

First of all.. you have HTC Sync installed right?
Happened to me initially as well.. although for me changing the cable and/or changing the USB port on the PC solved the issue. Have you tried these?
Also sometimes killing all apps on the device before connecting helped.
You can try accessing your device through ADB to see if its being detected.
And I really dont think you'll need to change the main board..

Thanks for your reply. When I go the phone ADB and Fastboot were working
well. There was no driver issue. Now even PC also does not detect the phone or any new hardware when I connect it to pc. I had working fastboot on both win7 and Linux (ubuntu) pc. Now in both OS the phone is not detectable. Windows device manager does not see any new hardware when I connect my inspire . dmesg also does not show my hardware when I connect my inspire to linux pc.
Please help or suggest me to investigate further. I know how to install and work with adb and fastboot as well as Clockwork recovery ( also ext recovery). Some people suggested to flash a new radio. I can flash the new radio via sdcard. But how safe is it ? My phone is S-off and made unbranded. Will flashing a new radio make my phone locked AT&T again? ????
Thanks a lot

As far as I know.. USB problem has no relation whatsoever to Radio. Radio is only concerned with the signal stuff. Flashing it isn't that risky if you follow the instructions... There's a thread in the development section about Radio's which explains it pretty nicely.
As for the USB problem, are you using a Custom ROM? Some ROMs like LeeDroid have USB detection problem which can be solved simply by flashing a different kernel like LordMod's.
What I meant by "Accessing through ADB" was if commands like "adb remount" or any adb command as such are working when your phone is connected to the PC? Or is it showing "error: device not found"?

I tried to switch to various different ROM from Gingerbread to ICS and ICS to HTC Sense 3.5, but still the same. Still not recognize by the computer.
Help me please...

Is it possible that you disabled the pop up?
If it doesn't seem to be a software problem, have you tried using a different USB cable? This would be the most likely problem for you, in my opinion.

Well, I already tried all these ways. Still not working. I even try to restore to the previous back up that the SD card is working by that time. But nothing happen still. Look like it is a hardware problem.
Have you looked at the device manager for devices with an exclamation point? Make sure you have the "show hidden devices" checked.
On your pc re-install the phone driver but first uninstall the original driver through control panel>programs. After the uninstall, plugging in your phone to your PC should bring up the unknown device pop up (then the new hardware installation dialogue). If not then the pc isn't picking up your phone, check the cable, maybe try a different cable/ usb port.
If all else fails, some mytouch custom roms on these forums borked usb, there was a workaround for that, something you could flash. I remember seeing it in some of the threads... Wish I could remember the name. It was around Cyanogen 7.1 mods/ports (before rc 7.2 was out). Maybe somebody else remembers..

It could be a failed USB connector in the phone. Much, much higher probability than "borked USB". Especially if he installed several custom ROMs and didn't have anything.
Very easy to tell:
Boot to bootloader (power off, then power on + Volume Down), choose "FASTBOOT" (with VolDown and Power buttons), connect USB. If you'll see "FASTBOOT USB" showing up instead of "FASTBOOT" - it means USB is working. If not - most likely USB plug in the phone is dead, or something wrong with your computer's USB ports.
you need to install the HTCdriver before connected the myTouch to computer. I think I downloaded it from the official myTouch 4g website, some mytouches have it in their sd card...

Hi, I've tried your suggestion. And the Fastboot USB didn't pop up. So that mean something wrong with it. Do you have any solution for this. Appreciate your help.
If no "install driver" or "unrecognized device" popped up at the computer - just to be sure, try a different computer. If still nothing pops up on the computer - it means you have to fix the USB socket of the phone, and it means you have to submit it to a lab (unless you're good with micro-soldering and have all the tools, including microscope - but it doesn't seem to be the case). It's a physical problem, and can't be solved with software - no builds/ROMs/etc can make metal contact

You are right. I think it is the hardware problem too. Because I just got a Micro USB port broken and I went to the phone repairer to fix it. After I got it back for a couple day and flash new ROM. The USB is no longer working. Will return it to them.
Thanks for your time
I had the same problem. I just formated the system and then flashed the same room and that worked for me. Hope it helps

Well, I already tried this method already. Didn't work for me. I even restored to the previous back up via Clockworkmods to the ROM with SD card mounting. But still not work. Format SD card, not working too. I've tried all the method. I think it's a hardware issue. Thanks
