[Q] Rapid Battery Drain - No Wifi, BT or 3G - Focus General

The last couple of weeks my Focus started just eating its battery. Until recently I would be around 50% by the end of the day with light usage. Obviously less if I use it a lot.
But in the last couple of weeks, its just started sucking the battery down. I don't have push email enabled. In troubleshooting I even turned off wifi, 3g and bt. That helps but its still basically dead by the evening on days when I've made a couple of calls and thats about it.
I had AT&T send me a new battery and that made no difference. I flashed to nodo hoping that new firmware would help. Same thing.
I know I should factory reset it, but I don't think I'll be able to jailbreak it again if I do a hard reset with nodo.
Any ideas?

After soft resetting the phone defaults to enabling feedback in the settings menu. I would toggle it off and see if that is draining. I have noticed dramatic battery drain from that. Also, turn off the phone update settings. In the find my phone setting toggle the get results faster to off. You said you don't have push email but if you do have any emails on the phone just double check the settings to make sure.

Thanks for the reply. I do have feedback disabled and have checked and double checked email push.
I've had this thing since they first came out and have a pretty good idea of how the battery holds up and how different things affect it. That's why this is so odd. It using the battery like I'm playing video games or web surfing all day. The problem now is that when I do actually need to use the thing more when I'm on the road, its dead in a few hours.

What is killing my battery life?

My 8125 is suddenly running out of batteries very fast. I suspect this is because of some activity running - if I turn the unit off, and leave it on my desk overnight, it is exhausted by morning (I, on the other hand, am exhausted by morning only if I am turned on. Sorry.)
I have checked for:
alarms and notifcations that are set to go off - there seem to be none
mail and other internet access items - there seem to be none
programs (like SPB Weather) updating themselves too frequently - there seem to be none
My energy settings are normal; sleep in one minute, backlight down, etc.
Is there anything I'm missing? Any suggestions?
wifi, bluetooth. make sure they are turned off.
That's exactly, WiFi and BT even when active in standby really drain the battery quickly.
thanks so much, but.... Wifi and Bluetooth are off - I never turn Wifi on, and I almost always keep Bluetooth off (though I wish there was a way to quickly - or even automatically - turn it on or off, ie, whenever I use it in phone mode, BT would turn on, and when I hang up, it turns off.)
any other thoughts?
Battery Gone Bad
Hey I think your battery is gone bad.
BT Off
Wifi Off
Backlight Down
Sounds to me battery is ready to go to the recycle bin lol
Also check your MSN Msnger Is not onn all the time.

maybe it is the battery. the unit is less than a month old, but I just bought a spare battery. I'll compare run-down times on both.
a related question: why would WiFi and Bluetooth consume battery power if the unit is asleep?
-thanks-
I started getting horrible life out of my battery as of last month, but then I upgraded the ROM on it and have been getting FANTASTIC battery life. Better than when I first got the device.
which Rom did you upgrade to?

Did you solve your battery problme?
when i am out in the country, where i might rarely get a signal, my battery drains real fast, prob to do with the constant searching for a signal to connect to.
I came upon this thread after my 8125 began having problems with the battery life last week. I'm wondering what kind of battery life people are getting and which settings they have.
For instance, before last week, I was getting little battery drainage during a 9 hour shift at work. Then this week, I was getting close to 55% battery drainage over the same duration. Just a few moments ago, I checked my battery settings and I found out that for some reason, my phone wasn't shut off after 2 minutes of idle time as it was originally set at. Okay, I'll test my battery usage tomorrow at work, but I suspect that was the problem.
Then it got me wondering how long other people have for battery life. With Bluetooth on, wifi off, lowest brightness setting and my auto shut off set at 2 minutes, I was able to last an entire 9 hour shift on standby with only about 4 - 5% drop in battery life. Hopefully, that is what I'll have tomorrow when I test it again with the auto shut off setting in place. What are others getting for battery life (please specify your settings).
I've forgotten to charge my phone at night before, and have had no problems making it through the second day of usage, though I'll usually get a low battery warning.
I keep Bluetooth and data connection on constantly. Don't use Wi-Fi unless I need something really quickly. Backlight is at the lowest active setting. I would say I use it moderately throughout the day. I use it to take important notes and make reminders for myself, along with surfing the internet without worry.
hi
Please check out activesync which drains the max battery..
make sure that activesync is not running in backround. once after disconnecting your mini-usb cable connectivity from PC please check for the activesync status.. if running turn it off.

Battery Drain, Possible Help

My 1st Imagio had no problem with battery, but the "end" key broke so I had a replacement sent. The replacement had nicks on screen and major battery drain, with overnight charge, by 3:00pm I had 5% left. So I sent for 2nd replacement. Same problem with the battery, fully drained by midday. Frustrated, I went to Verizon and requested replacement battery. All seemed well at first. Then, the new battery began to drain. I started eliminating programs running and now, at 10:00pm, I still have 72%, I talked, texted, sent pic mssg, got email, updated weather...etc. This is what I changed.
I turned the phone to CDMA only.
I changed input back to default HTC qwerty (I had sip change to swype)
I set email to check once a day, but I hit send/receive periodically
I set weather to check once a day.
Sorry, but I also uninstalled "codyppc performance booster"
I reinabled Auto Divice lock. (this seemed to help save battery by locking)
I am running spb mobile shell 3.5 and WM 6.5 interface. Whenever I run the HTC Touchflo3D it seems to drain more battery, along with suck up memory.
I check running applications often, reset a couple times a day. I am having an issue with my spb time alarm going off in the morning though. I will try something tonight to eliminate that as the culprit. Overall, I think anything set to run regularly will drain the battery. With these fixes, now I LOVE THIS PHONE. I have all my programs on it, lots of program and storage memory left, (more than I had out of the box) tweaked just the way I like. Hope this helps someone.
Did anyone find this helpful???
Just wondering if I had isolated issues or if anyone else tried and got results...
i posted about it. the battery life can be fairly attrocious for several reasons. Mainly OEM settings & Poorly stored batteries.
With some fairly medium use (google maps, few camera shots a day. Maybe 20-30 minutes worth of streamed video via CorePlayer, or a hacked HAVA program) i still have some battery life the next morning. (Not a day and a half worth, but enough to make it from one morning till the next).
My first battery was trash, but my second has been perfectly fine. Unfortunately doing everything you've already said. Forcing CDMA only & installing no-push internet cab was the biggest help. (Left email & weather on update every 30min)
The idle time for me (overnight with no charge) seems to be better not running TF3D also. If I know Itll be awhile before I can charge it's the first thing that get's disabled. I love TF3D, but SBP shell is nice also.
Eh... My regular useage will typically last around 24-36 hours before the phone wont cut on anymore. Good enough for me I guess. Mostly depends on how much I voice call during the day. (lotta test/mms)
Anywho. Long post for telling you that I dont know what else you can do. At some point it'll boil downt o being a smartphone & while in use it'll devour it's battery???
Actually... I didn't see you had installed no-push internet. You need to if you haven't. When you open a data connection many times it wont close by itself. So you can set your email, weather, etc to check every day & after it cheks it. Itll stay on all day. :\
No Push Internet
Thanks for the feedback. I do have no push internet also. In addition to previous post, I have tried to run Facebook and the battery drained in a couple of hours. I love the phone though. I may buy the extended battery... then it will last 4 hours instead of 2????
WIth my first Imagio I ran push email and TF3D. I had no battery issues to speak of. After a full day I would be at 30-40%. Memory was an issue though and then the end key broke.
With my replacement I tried SPB MS 3.5 and had outrageous battery drain, 4 hours off the charger and I was down to 25%. WHen I remove SPB I am back to what I will call acceptable battery performance. I finally turned off TF3D and got a couple of widgets for the plain jane today screen. I can live with the battery life and I am not resetting 1 or 2 times a day to revover memory.
Cant wait for the unlock and custom roms!!
how do you get the weather to update every 30 min?
this would help if it really works if i get one i will let you all know how it does.

Something's not right with my battery, don't you think?

Ok, guys look... I know there are lots of variables, but I get back from work, it's been 12 hours since my 100% charge, I'm at 26%. I get home, I charge my phone. It's back up to 100% in about 2 hours. I try some weather widgets on my phone, answer 3 emails quickly, I'm down to 83%. Something must be up, right?
I have notice this happen and its because the phone reads the battery is at 100 but you still need to let it charge longer for it to hold the charge. I suggest a full charge then kill it until it shuts off. Then let it charge while off until the LED turns green and maybe for a little time after that. Do that a few times and you should see some improvement.
Ok, well perhaps I'll have to try that then. Can the battery be reconditioned? Do these batteries have memory?
How long have you had the phone? Battery life should improve after having the phone for 5-10 days.
Like what joe333x stated. When I first got my phone I charged it up to 100% and turned it off until the led turned green for about 30mins. After that I get about 16hrs of battery life.

I've had the phone since last Thursday night (not yesterday) and I know that two times, I unplugged when it was orange. Guess I should have left it.
The other thing possibly battery related is that right now for example, I have thhe little cycling arrows icon on my taskbar. I am 99% positive that I have nothing set up to be syncing for THIS long. It's been on all day. I unplugged at 7:45AM, it's now 11:21AM, I've done maybe 15 text messages, and the phone is at 77%. You can see how I might find this frustrating.

i understand. i'm having the same problem. my battery died on me after 5hrs of usage, or complete setup, i should say. i just got off the phone w/ t-mo support in hopes of getting a replacement battery. no go. the operator said her phone dies in 2-3hrs, so i should be happy w/ 5. opted me to buy a spare battery for $50. i am very displeased.
you guys have something running in the background for sure ..go into your acocunts and sync the very least turn off the tmo garbage if not all of them except for google.. If you see my thread I've gone over36 hours on one charge
I've got all of them off, even weather cause I'm using Weatherbug.
But I do have background data on. But I don't wanna be completely disconnected to my data. What exactly does background data run?

my 5hr kill is after doing a factory reset. only thing set to sync is google. no facebook or twitter accounts are linked. display is on the minimum. screen timeout is 15sec. no wifi, bluetooth, or gps. so i'm at a lost.
are you still experiencing that kind of life?
Same here. No wifi, no bluetooth, no Google, no GPS. All I have even remotely "automated" are my emails, my text message data, my freakin phone. That's it. It's gotta be the battery charging thing I think because there's nothing else draining my battery and yet the little sync circular arrows are still on my task bar.
Oh, and by the way... since my message at around 11:15 or so, I'm now down from 77 to 70 per cent. 7 percent in an hour without doing anything.
The things like tmobile and weather are set to sync automatically from the factory (meaning theyre set after a wipe) Have you guys gone into the settings and made sure you turned them off??
I have, yes. They have been off all week. 12 hours usually gets me down to about 26 per cent. That's a 6 day average, moderate use.
that doesnt sound too bad for 12 hours.. have you tried killing it a few times and fully recharging?
my thing is, i find it quite unpleasant that i'm having to disable all the basic or advertised functions of my phone just to have the same, if not, worse battery life? i find myself not even wanting to answer some calls because of the thought that one 5min conversation will dock my battery more than 5%.
It is incredibly ridiculous to have to be constantly concerned that if I do a search on the internet, that my phone may die earlier than I can afford. Additionally, I don't wanna be one of those annoying people running around all over the place with an AC adapter trying to plug my phone in every place I go to. Nor do I think I should have to keep a USB cable handy for when I'm at work. Plus, what's the deal with the batteries, do they or do they not have a memory that requires them to be fully charged and then fully discharged?
Hey guys,
I just joined because of this specific issue myself. My girl has the mytouch 3G and she could go for almost TWO DAYS without a charge. I leave my house at 7AM every morning, and return about 7PM. By the time I get home, I've maybe texted a few people, made one or two phone calls, and my battery is sub 30%. I've turned off wifi, bluetooth, and the display is just about as dark as it can go.
I just turned off the background data option, and had to manually go into all the accounts and make sure the sync was also not running. We'll see what happens.
Does anyone know if there is a 2.2 FW for this phone we can use yet? I've read up on user created FW (like cyanogen) because they cut out all the useless crap most of us will never use.

I noticed this too. Its due to that fact that from default there are a bunch of things that sync now not just your gmail account. Go into settings and disable all the unneeded things and you wont see it as much.

I have had these issues before and it was almost always due to somthing in the background.
but letting the battery drain till it shuts down then charge 5+ hours then drain again, always going till it dies is the key, it will run a long time after it says it is done...

i'm continuing that "conditioning" now. it died yesterday after 5hrs fresh from a factory reset. i charged it for 8hrs. i will perform another day of drainage and overcharge today.

Insane Battery Drain...Please help

This is my first android phone and I'm wondering if I am doing anything wrong. Yesterday I charged my phone and it was at 83%. I unplugged the phone and went to sleep, when I woke up this morning the battery was completely drained.
This happens a lot. Even if I am not doing anything it still drains like crazy. I just text, make some phone calls and it barely makes it through the day. I don't play any games, no gps, no Bluetooth or anything. With my plan, I don't have a data connection so I can't connect to 3g/4g so that shouldn't drain anything.
What could I be doing wrong? When I'm done using the phone I tap the power button on top, the screen goes black - to sleep I presume and I put it away. I had an iphone before this and I did exactly the same thing and the battery lasted for 3-4 days on one charge.
Whenever I see what's using up the battery, the display tops the list. The display is using up 75-80% of the battery. If the phone is asleep for most of the time why is the display using up that much battery? Am I not putting the phone to sleep correctly?

If you cant connect to 3g/4g, you should turn it off in settings. Otherwise, Your phone will constantly look for a signal, draining your battery.
Battery life is all relative. Every single person will experience different battery life. The apps you have installed, the amount of time you spend on it and the time you spend on/in each app, distance from cell towers, distance from Wi-Fi sources, settings you have for every app and things like sync and what not.
The first thing to check is if your phone is being affected by the init or suspend bugs. The good news is the former has an easy fix, and the latter can be temporarily fixed by a reboot.
First, download & install Watchdog Lite from the market. Then open its preferences and check "include phone processes," "monitor phone processes," and "display all phone processes." Then just use your phone as normal. It may take a while before you get an alert from Watchdog (and maybe you never will and it ends up you have a different problem). But if you do, note the process that is the culprit.
If it is the init process, go to settings>applications>development> check "usb debugging."
If it is the suspend process, reboot the phone. It should keep it from happening again for a while.
I know the second answer isn't really an answer, but so far it's all we've got for that problem. There is more information on the 2 problems in these threads:
Init:

Suspend:

Good luck...I had both of the problems and my phone didn't last to dinner time. Now I get better battery life than the iphone 3GS I had before this...about a day and a half of moderate use.
EDIT: also you'll probably want to go to settings>wireless & networks>uncheck "mobile network" since you don't have a data plan. No reason to have that on since you don't have a data plan.

I installed this using the Moderate setting, and then selected those options as recommended in preferences.
Does Watchdog use a lot of system resources when running in this manner? Will it cause the battery to drain noticeably faster?

Completely unnoticeable, IMO.
I installed watchdog lite and I have had couple of alerts. I got suspended couple of times and I also got Android system once.
Android system - 50.1%
Foreground
Suspend - 54.4%
Linux Process
I turned off the data usage from the settings and it did help save battery. The display is not using so much battery life anymore. It went from using 70% to 35%.
Edit: Battsatt reported that the battery was at 93%. When I saw the two alerts above I rebooted the phone and Battsatt now starts reporting the phone is fully charged.
Make sure the GPS is turned Off, too...
All these answers and the easy ones were not mentioned..
Make sure you shut your AUTO SYNC off...
Make sure you lower your brightneess....
Make sure you turn off GPS(was stated above me)
Turn off your wifi if you are not using it.. make sure you are not transmitting your hot spot stuff...

You just summed it up right there. You are experiencing the 'suspend' issue, period. There is no app you can install to fix it. There is no app you can uninstall to fix it. There is no setting you can adjust to fix it. There is no fix for the 'suspend' issue, literally.
I started the following thread in an attempt to consolidate posts and hopefully work toward flushing out what the real issue is...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872839
This is a real, legitimate issue with Android 2.2.x Froyo. As I linked in my post, this is Issue # 11126 on Google Code...
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11126
If there was an app or setting that fixed the 'suspend' issue, we wouldn't even be discussing this right now. There are fixes/workarounds for a lot of things, but right now, the 'suspend' process issue truly is a mystery. No one, not a single person has yet to post, "this is the cause of the issue," let alone a fix for it.
I wish you had a fix man, I really do. My fiancee experiences this and there's only one way she's found to sort of workaround it, sort of - she reboots her phone every morning. This seems to keep it at bay, at least more so than when she doesn't reboot each morning, once she takes it off the charger. She still gets it though and she's just used to looking for Watchdog and checking her processes now.
This thread could go on and on forever but it comes down to this:
- The MT4G does not have insane battery drain and will give you about 12 hours of life, under normal>medium usage. If your battery is draining insanely quickly AND if you're seeing the suspend process jacked up so high, then there.is.no.fix.yet.
There might be a ton of other replies after this about uninstall this, install that, change this, don't use widgets, use widgets, etc. Those attempts will be futile.

[Q] Sudden Battery Drain on stock phone

So as it says, I am having a sudden issue with my battery. For the first few weeks after I bought this phone, I was sitting at nearly 2 full days before charging again. The past few weeks.. it has been decreasing steadily. From 2 full days to having to charge my phone every 1.5 days.. and now down to 1 day. This morning I wake up and my battery is being ridiculous. This was an overnight charge. I had only touched my phone last night to text and that was all.
I do not have have my phone rooted, and I would love to be able to fix the issue without rooting if possible! I really dislike losing all my game progresses when having to flash or factory reset anything.
As you can see in the attachment below.. I HAD great battery life. I played games frequently throughout the day.. used the phone quite often to text, facebook, chat on hangouts and still had 2 full days before needing to charge again.
Yes I've disabled a LOT of bloatware. I keep my location and bluetooth off at all times. I turned the WIFI from "Always on" to "Only when charging".I keep my screen brightness turned down and set to automatic. I turned off Google Search. I DO have motion gestures turned on, ONLY for the palm swipe screen capture.
I tried searching the forums for the answer and could not find one that directly applies to my issue. Most of them were short battery lives out of the box or shortened with the update in April.
I would appreciate any suggestions that you may have!
I'm in the exact same boat. When I went to bed last night my phone was at 27% and my device was dead when I woke up this morning.
I'm debating doing a factory reset on my phone, but that's a last resort.
I've had weird battery issues like this. Like 90% battery when I go to bed then the phone's off (2%) when I wake up. I've switched off the wi-fi toggles that we all know about but I also deleted and disabled most Samsung apps (except SHealth) and deleted the Samsung app store. I also got rid of all apps that I rarely or never use. This got rid of my battery issues and now have excellent battery life.
Yeah.. I have completely gutted out all the useless apps to me. That included all of Samsung's Apps and all but one T-mobile app. I'm in your boat Undergrad, I really don't want to factory reset if I don't need to!
I went into my Google Play and changed the updating from always to let me decide and turned off Google Search.
My battery still isn't where it used to be but that helped a lot. I'm now at 1d 2hours at 26%. The screen and Android System are neck and neck on my usage right now..
I wonder what app(s) is/are doing this.. maybe a recent update to them is just chunking away at our batteries.
Thank guys for letting me know I'm not alone!
