AOSP Starting to drop *slowly* - Xoom General

Looks like Google is starting to drop AOSP HoneyComb - Slowly albeit. I am not sure if enough has been dropped for JesusFreak to get us a good BakSmalli/Smalli setup though

Google needs to put the ****ing source out already. If they want to prevent crappy devices with honeycomb, this is the wrong way to do it.

What's the right way to do it? Because I can't imagine the flak Google will take once the crappy manufacturers get hold of the source code and devices with 128mb of RAM and 400mhz processor are running Honeycomb at glacier speed.
Suddenly people will be saying, "but I thought it was designed for tablets? Honeycomb sucks!"

I don't get that argument at all... Companies want their device to sell not flop. The galaxy tab ran 2.2 simply because honeycomb didn't exist back then. Honestly tho... Who the hell is going to buy a honeycomb phone... ?

Satisfying GPL/LGPL, and they've been there since January. Nobody noticed until they were recently updated.

Still unlikely we'll see full Honeycomb in AOSP; Ice Cream will drop soon enough.

I get your point but I'm not talking about quality manufacturers like Sammy. I'm talking about all the Chinese knock offs like the apad and those pos resistive things like the Disgo and the Next tab that are available in the UK and I'm sure elsewhere.
These things can't even run Froyo properly, what chance do they have of running Honeycomb?

put it this way... the G1 runs 2.2, we walk on the moon, we give millions of dollars to Justin Bieber, Obama got elected (had to)
Anything is possible.
Leaked specs show it to be just another Galaxy S phone but with Gingrbread. Also, since it has support for T-Mobile's AWS bands, the modem should probably work, too. It's basically the Vibrant but with a front-facing camera (which we can mod in anyways). I'll be shocked if there isn't a port within days of the Nexus S being released. And hell, Samsung and T-Mo should make the damn firmware downloadable to us! (OK, that last part will never happen...well, not officially

I mean, this is the exact same phone we have but with the front-facing camera installed.
So can we get the rear camera to work with no banding with some firmware from this being ported over? I think that's the best thing of porting over some stuff from this phone.

Not directly @donut, but...
The point of it being a NEXUS is that it is the most open phone. The nexus is the android development phone. It is pure android with all support coming straight from google! Everyone should hope this is not just a rumour. This would hopefully get us 2.3 & more on the fast track.
Of course there are specifics that may not translate but here's to hoping : cheers:!

Well said. The phone is real. All we need is to confirm the hardware is exactly the same (except the camera part). If the hardware is the same, that makes things easier. As the ROM chefs/devs here have shown, porting is doable among Galaxy S phones with the hardware being so similar.

Sweet... from vibrant to mytouch4g to nexus s to galaxy 2. If its really got a dual core Sammy processor then we are talking Orion? If this baby comes out by summer then that best buy buy back insurance is going to be pretty nice!
I love my sns on cyanogen but really miss all the great codecs etc. Team whiskey really made the vibrant special. I hate touchwhiz but ifs easier to remove most of the bad with that and keep all the good with guys like team whiskey and supercurio than it is to try to hack all of it back in. You get a permenant rfs fix and get rid of the overlay and everything's flying high! The sns seems to have a better screen than my vibrant did in all areas save for the gorilla glass. Can't even imagine a samoled without pentile, its going to be amazing! Wonder how that Orion's going to card against qualcomm and Tegra2... gpu will definitely be nice at the very least. Qualcomm will probably always own the linpack scores but a phone is so much better than that. Lets hope by then gingerbread gets hardware enabled browsing...

Its still going to be called gingerbread

*the gingerbread thread*

Well, now that most of us have FroYo, I thought that we might be lacking something to WILDLY speculate about... sooooo GINGERBREAD ANYONE!?
Some of our friends in Europe already have gingerbread on their Galaxy S's, so the question is, when do we get ours?
Now I know that it took us over six months to get FroYo, but that was due to some sort of disagreement with Verizon and Samsung (most likely over Bing). However, since we now have 2.2, I would *assume* that they have gotten past that and that any future updates we get will most likely come in a more timely fashion.
If things go accordingly, and Samsung and Verizon play nice, then I would assume that we would be getting gingerbread around September or October (based on how long it took FroYo to be distributed to other carriers).
What do you guys think?
P.S. I'll post any major updates that appear in the media.

OP: I think the gingerbread update is going to take even longer than froyo because the gx2 and the charge are going to be out. Samsung is most likely going to update those before they even think about us.
Unfortunately, the truth is: we don't know when the heck Gingerbread is coming for the Fascinate. And with Samsung's somewhat random updates, its really hard to guess even a general date.

Completely untrue. The droid name means nothing. Carrier and manufacturer are the same. Hardware is the exact same as a the fascinate other than the fact that it has a 4g radio. Its a last gen phone in the very beginning of a new generation... No one cares about it. If anything, its twice the orphan than the fascinate was.

How much do you want to bet the Droid Charge will see Gingerbread and more minor updates than the Fascinate just because it's in the Droid lineup? Both phones are nearly identical when it comes to software. Nearly every phone in the Droid lineup has had great support(except for the Eris and maybe the Pro).
I honestly don't think the fascinate will ever see gingerbread in any sort of official way.

You mean "could be bothered" to port it. I'm sure that someone _could_, but an OS designed for a tablet on a 4.3" screen would be a bit average.
Wait for the Cyanogen guys to port IceCream Sandwich (Android 4.0?) if/when it turns up. By that time Samsung will have dropped the SGS2 like last weeks spam sandwich and will be pushing the SGS3 instead.
Of course, that won't be until around Christmas sometime I'd be guessing.
God dammit, this is about the 3rd topic on the same thing. SDK does not equal the whole os, google have only put out the source for the gpl bits and a lot of android is apache.
And a 3.0 port wouldn't make much sense on a 4.3inch screen
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
this is the exact reason why Google hasn't made honeycomb open sourced.
Honeycomb is only meant for tablets. Until people learn to accept that it will remain closed. We've already seen android ruined by sub-par OEMs putting android on their **** hardware.
I hope not, honeycomb looks so messy at the moment
There really is no point putting honeycomb on a phone, the optimisations are mainly just for larger screens. If there is something nice in there it normally gets ripped out and cooked into a ROM or app anyway, its just a waste of time doing a full port IMHO.

It's interesting at least that we may start getting hints as to what lies ahead for both Android phones and tablets. I'm sure the CM folks will end up porting, so we'll likely see it on the EVO 4G at some point.
