[Q] [kernel] noob help!! - Galaxy 3 General

hey? so there is much buzz about fugumod kernel blah blah
so as a noob representing the noob g3 users community [i hope there are some other than me]
my questions:
q1,differnece b/w rom and kernel??
q2,how to use one??
q3,if it overclocks then does it drain battery too fast??
q4,are they stable and safe to use??

Hey.
I bought my first Android phone 5 days ago, so I'm a noob too
But I'm a Linux power user.
Kernel is the core of the operating system, it contains drivers, filesystem interfaces and APIs needed by computer hardware to function. Android basixally uses Linux kernel.
ROM is short for read only memory, this is where the kernel and user interface (the pretty menus, homescreens, icons etc.) are installed. The propper name for this would be OS, but on phones people call in ROM, because of the place where it is installed.
Higher clock speeds require more power, more power drains the battery faster.
I havw not tried Fugumod kernels personally, although I am tempted to. It should be safe, but the only way to know that is trough extensive testing. The normal one seems safe, but no OC there.
These are simplified explanations for noobs, there is much more to it, but for gods sake, Im typing this on a 3.2 inch screen!

Pretty much the required anwser, but also dont forget this:
There is still bugs and problems with the OC version of fugumod kernel, cuz its stiil being ported to our phones.
Also only overclocking does not help for performance boost, We need to put JIT and COMPACHE, making more difficult to install if you don't know what are you doing.
Also, according to some user that tested OC, some phones cant be overclocked to 1.3 ghz or less making the task pretty risky...
The best we can do is wait until a custom rom adds this kernel to prove this.

So if a custom rom comes with a kernel,i guess it would be easier as flashing a is easy.am i right?or the process would change

i have a few noob questions too
-to install fugumod 2.2, do I just flash it on top of my kyrillos 3.0?
-what is a fs.convert file and how do I make one?
-and lastly, what is ext4? How does it make it any faster?

There is a topic on fugumod. Not the right place to ask but here it is.
-Yes.If everything goes fine no data will be lost.
-It is a plain text file made with Root Explorer or any similar app. Just rename it to fs.convert
-ext4 is a Linux filesystem, just like FAT or NTFS in windows. It is faster than rfs.

[Q] {HELP} Sprint Samsung Epic midNight Rom v3.1 EXT4 CW3

Interested in overclocking my cpu. I have heard of people doing this at 1.2 GHz and still maintain stability and good battery life. Currently installed is Kernel version 2.6.32.9 after granting SetCPU su permission (and checking always allow) I find that the max overclock is at 1 GHz. Obvioulsy this is not a Kernel that can be overclocked. I tried installing some random Kernel I found online using Odin. This however failed during install and "bricked" my phone. I was able to Odin back to stock, re-root, and re-flash this ROM. Does anyone know of a Kernel that will work with this ROM and allow me to overclock? I really like this ROM so far and I want to keep it!
Thanks in advance,
Your best bet may be searching the Epic's wiki page for kernals. The sticky link is located in each of the Epic's forums.

there aren't any kernels right now for froyo because of no source from samsung/sprint
we have to wait till official 2.2 drops
Thanks I appreciate it iSaint! Is it worth flashing a 2.1 ROM and Kernel so that I can overclock or do you think that overclocking is overated and that this midNIGHT 3.1 (which is blazing fast compared to stock) is fast enough!...... I guess will I notice a huge difference after overclocking to 1.2 GHz?

no problem...if you want stability and speed then you cant argue with ACS syndicate 2.1 but i use MidNight which IMO is very fast and i've had zero problems with it so far there isn't really that much of a difference to me on 1.2-1 GHz but test them out and decide what you like 8)
Looks like I'll just stick with midNIGHT 3.1 for awhile. Any tweeks you know of that will improve speed and performance?

open it up system/app just dont delete anything important or necessary things i delete are (swype, browser i replace with dolphin,launcher2,live wallpapers) thats all i do bro
Thanks a lot, I've allready flashed the no journalling mod. But thanks anyway. All in all midNight is blazing fast and I'm very happy with that ROM. Have a good day!

2 cents here.
Personally 2.1 oc'd to 1.3 ghz on acs gave me more speed than midnight 3.1. Rummaging through the phone the advantages of rfs over ext4 are evident. But Playing games and multitasking goes to 2.1 acs @1.3 ghz for me. The phone flies at 1.3. Just try it. you have nothing to lose and you can easily flash back.
Ill definately give that a try. Is that 2.1 include the gps fix?

GINGERBREAD Hacked/Compiled Kernels: Share your opinion/experiences/feedback

I was just curious: how is your experience with the various hacked kernels available like, for instance :CF-Root 3.0] JP*,JS*,JQ3,JV1/K - su+bb+2e/CWM - rfs+ext4 by Chainfire
Hacked Lagfix/Ext4 Samsung Galaxy S Gingerbread - JVB by supercurio
[KERNEL][GPL][SECURITY] FuguMod 3.0 (gingerbread JVB) voodoosndv7 by nikademus
DamianGTO Ultimate Ginger Kernel by DamianGto
SpeedMod Gingerbread by Hardcore
Talon Kernel by ytt3r / existz
Do you know another one?
Tested a couple of them, pretty much satisfied with the responsiveness and battery performance, no bugs or issues, BUT UNLIKE many hacked/compiled kernel users I am always on RFS and have all tweaks disabled....(edit: not anymore, testing some tweaks right now)
In the begining running Gingerbread the sgs was having some weird battery performances, but after removing a bunch of bloatware and freezing another bunch (using Titanium app), like "software update" for instance , battery performance is stable.
Some feedback about this and the other kernels would be nice, specially from users like me, that wont do the "file convertion thing" (always on RFS).
Tks

Well first i try Supercurio, Gingerbread-GT-I9000-stock-from-sources-kernel+hackskernel, and work so well. Then i try Supercurio again Gingerbread-GT-I9000-dev-kernel+hacks, and it´s a complete kernel is really a good Kernel, estable, and work so fine, and not draw the battery.
Actually i have Darkys v10.0RC5b2 rom and try DamianGTO_Ginger_Beta_6__340HZ, no good it´s unstable and with the ram don´t work good.
Now I have Ficeto Kernel, Dark Core 2.0 and really work so good with the ram and with batery, it´s very stable and it´s a complete Kernel whit lagfix and ext4.
Now I want try Dark Core 2.1 and probably the last Hardcore´s Kernel, speedmod-kernel-k15c-test5-o2-09q3-500hz, perhaps now without reboot problem.
Hmmm....I dont think your probs are kernel related but more MOD ROM related....
You missed the Hardcore's SpeedMod kernel!
From the beginning JVK and now JVB both deodexed by Ramad with CFRoot is a winning team for me.No ext-4 stuffs,or as a test...killing time...,and just happy like that.Flashing mods and themes, enjoying his CWM application, can't thank enough Chainfire for accompanying us in our wish to use this 2.3 «release».
Only one sudden battery drain as far for me and it was a google process.Maybe related to maps, read that somewhere...
MY SGS New XWJVB Problems...
1. my screen going off when im still working...or playing game...or calling with loudspeaker (check this) (when not touch)
2. always on my touch buttons lights (menu= back keys)
3. didn't play some games (restart phone and stucking) but can play that games on my older froyo firmware...
I'm using XWJVB (old i use XXJVK) with CWM3 EXT4 File Sys...... please....tell me this gingerbread releases are still beta or final releases?
I'm using CF-Root 3.1 and it works but haven't that much to compare with because I'm new in this stuff and haven't tested any other kernel.
I'm using Simple Honey 3.1 (JVB) right now with CF-Root 3.1 + EXT4 converted and wonder if I'm able to change kernel without wipe the phone? If I don't need to wipe then I may study the difference between those kernels
Great puting all up to date kernels in one list tho, that makes it easier for me and others who are curious about them.

I haven't had any problems on all the kernels.
It is just a matter of taste i think.
Some have other features (focus areas) then others, but in general they are all stable. Even the released developers version of supercurio.
So it seems that they all know what they are doing.
Personally i am using now the damiangto kernel for the more memory, just because i have SPD Shell 3D running and it consumes at lot of memory.
Here's my very, very executive executive summary:
- I rooted using CF-root 3.1 (not 3.0, filename was "CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS.tar").
I used this only to gain root and to flash CWM3-dependent patches, so I didn't get to fool much around with it. But from my light usage, I definitely didn't notice any problems.
- I've been running pretty much all JVK/JVB-revisions of supercurio's kernel so far (for the ext4 lagfix) and I can't really complain about anything. The added audio-drivers are definitely a bonus. Can't live without them now. I haven't had any issues with performance nor stability.
- Fugumod.
I'm absolutely alien to this kernel/mod and really have no experience with it. Not tried it once. That said, people has said earlier in the JVA/JVB/JVK-thread that when they rooted using Fugumod, they had issues connecting their phones to Kies afterwards. And they said a reflash of stock firmware and then using CF-Root instead solved their problems.
Unless you have some very specific reasons to go this route, it seems this is the only one with consistently confirmed problems so far and might be worth avoiding. Maybe the problems have been identified and fixed though. Not absolutely sure here.
- DamianGTO.
Absolutely alien to this one as well, but haven't seen any posts about specific issues either.
Hmmm havn't tried darkcoreGB yet...

EDIT: Just noticed: Damian's XDA account is currently disabled? And somebody else edited his first post?
What's going on?
....
I was on Darky RC3 with DarkCore 2 and wasa super smooth and fast.
Then I decided to try MIUI RC6 ... run it from Friday to Sunday when I gave up:
1. camera not working
2. touch keys are iffy, sometimes they work, other times they don't
3. My 3G network kept dripping all the time
4. try to flash differnet modem broke IMEI and had to reinstall the whole ROM
5. when alarm sounds, i could not stop it unless i lock and unlock the screen
6. there is no support, for every issue I had the answer was: it's in the FAQ
So I am back on Darky 10RC5.3 and much more happier; faster, smoother, camer works, 3G is fine, i can flash any modem I want and above all the support team is fantastic.
Battery life
What about battery life? I test speedmod for 3 days and I find less battery autonomy that 2.2.1.
For a medium usage after a day it's over!!!!
Does anyone have this trouble???
Yeah Damian is no longer at xda. He is still developing tho at his own forum. Using his beta7 with no issues do far except a hot reboot after I wiped cache
Edit you can my dropbox link to gto7 to your first post if you like

Fastest rom to overclock with?

Hey,
I see a lot of people using CM7 is this really the best one?
Also till how many mhz I can overclock on that one?
Yes Cm7 IS really great, in fact you can customize almost everything, and I really like that feature...
As for overclocking you can overclock I think to max of 768mhz(if I'm wrong somebody please correct me)...maybe you can a little bit more but I think it is kernel related...
Hope it helps,
Best regards
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Irrespective of which ROM you choose, it is the kernel which allows (or disallows) you from Overclocking. Till date, there are 2 primary kernels which are available - HCDR.Kernel by Jacob and nFinity by arco, and both OC support upto 768MHz. (I think Deep-Knight has recently developed a new kernel for his ROM, which allows OC upto 600MHz)
Because of this, you can overclock your stock ROM also, if you so wish, by simply flashing a custom kernel.

Hi!
Which kernels can I use for original rom, if I want to overclock? HCDR, or Deep, or what? It will make the phone instable, or not?
Thank You!

You can use any. nFinity MC4 offers more features though, like Smartass Governor. It can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995301
Else, you can use HCDR Kernel also, if you wish, and decide for yourself which suits you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798471
It shouldn't make the phone unstable at all. But, in any case, make a Nandroid Backup beforehand.
Thank You
Well M using hell fire .. Cm7 based ....
Which is stable till 729 Mhz overclock m using max 729 and min 490 (I guess)
Phone is Much faster than before and love playing angry birds
I read all the 2 posts, but Im not sure to change the original slow kernel, for a faster. All have some bugs, battery life, wifi, etc...
I dont know, which could be better for the stock rom, or which could be better than the original.
Anyway, I want to try one of that, but I dont know which.
How can I flash just the kernel? And also back up my programs with titanium, or mybackup?
It clears everything like the rom flashing?
Ok, I made it, its cool, and faster. Thanks for the help.
is the overclocking "app" in standard cm7? Or i must go to market or anything else to download it?

I would suggest, since you are already running 7.0, check the link Kyrillos ROM v7.1 and update your ROM to v7.1 (its so much better, though optional), post that Flash G3Mod v 1.6 Kernel.
Then using Set CPU you can OC more than 800 Mhz.
Note : Dont forget to read the instructions carefully for Kyrillos 7.1 ROM, G3Mod Kernel and SetCPU.....remember, you do all this at your own risk..check my signature for my stats...

Go to 7.1 link given above, and save the file in your SD Card and rename it as update.zip
Then from CWM recovery, install it and you would have 7.1 (read the link, you got to have 7.0 installed to install 7.1, which u already have)
2ndly as far as OC goes, no one would want to have their cell die..my question is Do you guarantee that OC at 800 Mhz will not make ur phone dead? (just a food for thought, dont make this bug you )
What i normally do is, using SetCPU i OC only while playing game..i normally keep it as 600-1200 MHz, on demand.....after I am done...i set it back to 200-800 Mhz on demand...and I normally play for a couple of hours at stretch...nothing has happened to my phone so far...but at the same time, I know when you run at max speed, you are bound to tire early....decide what you want more

thx for this help !
I'm looking forward to do this update (didn't know it was possible with that zip)
Some Q:
- Will it keep all installs, settings and apps as they are now? (I have K7.0-OC)
- I have G3-1.7 (looking forward to the battery fix), won't it harm this kernel or will of flash the fugumod again? (and do I need to reflash afterwards?)
- I have ext4 with many installs, won't it be damaged after updating?
- I don't have a swap, is it needed? Does it make a difference? (in the g3mod app I've set all to ext4, does this move the swap to ext4? It's 500Mb and half used by now...)
I wouldn't want to ruïn my system now, since it's finally running (not always smooth, dough...)
I suggest using fugumod ultra as that has an OCed bus so games wont lagg.

Dont worry about the quadrant score, its misleading.
You can get a higher quadrant score by some tweaks, but more importantly.
See if your phone is more responsive, much faster, no lags, no freezes. If it is there, quadrant doesnt matter.

I did the SU terminal supercharger settings, I tried the multitasking, but the rest is to technical for me.
Any suggestions?

Brother, it does not ask for wiping, you have to do it manually...Also Supercharger doesnt work for me however lagfix does, but again I would say more than quadrant score, you should be concerned about the performance of the phone and responsiveness.

Need help from good people of xda

So i am on this forum for a long time now i tested every rom and kernel with games and how they work and all but now i need your help currently i am on stock rom and i am sick of it because it is slow and my internal memory is 150/190 mb used... i stopped playing games and i am now looking for fastest rom that won't bug,and i need it for messages and music player so do you have any opinion on what should i use cm7 ? kyrillos ? or there is something better ? faster ? easier to use?
ty to all that help me
Kyorarom would help in opening apps faster as you can use kyora app to lock apps in memory so they open faster. I recommend kyorarom too for its tweaks and theme. Its really up to you
Cheers

Ok, let me summarize a bit... I was planning on making a guide for my setup for all those who want update but are a bit skeptic towards custom ROMs.
Let's get started...
Firstly, I have to state that I tried almost every ROM out there and Kyorarom, personally left biggest impact on me considering speed...
BUT, few days ago, I had some crazy picture in my head which was saying that modding one part of ROM crashes whole integrity of that ROM. So I was thinking that probably the best solution would be putting stock ROM and changing kernel only.
So, what did I do?
I decided to try to update ROM to original Froyo supplied from my provider (T-mobile Croatia)
1.) I flashed complete eclair...
2.) Failed to update to Froyo via Kies (who would say...)
- when Kies downloads a ROM it stores it to temp folder. As it didn't want to update from Kies, I took the same ROM and flashed it through ODIN
3.) As that worked perfectly, I had clean XXJPQ (So far the best one I got...) and decided to put a root as I faced some problems before while flashing kernels which should grant me a root...
4.) After I got root, it came to me that I just have to choose right kernel. I decided to go for fugumod. In this case, I took fugumod 2.4 800 Mhz (Cpu setup - 333.5 / 800 Mhz, governor performance)
Right now, you have a ultra mega fast ROM with incredible battery life. (Using ROM whole day with data and wifi + some music got it down to 85% from fully charged)
After that all I did was put 5LS mod and extended power menu...
I'm using Nemus Launcher which has left the smoothest impact on me and the most satisfying options provided for customizing...
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
EDIT:
As there wasn't recovery, and with that no backup option, I had feeling like it's really needed. Fugumod didn't serve any kind of recovery and I haven't found any kind of standalone install for CWM, it was time for me to change kernel. Candidates were kyorakernel (hillbeast) and astrum (moikop). As I tried kyorakernel before and it is based on fugumod and g3mod I decided to go for astrum which is based on samsung.
Results:
It showed great results for now. RZ Recovery packed with kernel is really great. Simple to use, has better interface...
Kernel also gives possibility to use Data2SD (hybrid) and OC to 1ghz (I preffer myself 800 mhz with lagfree governor)
Also, as it simply wasn't enough for me, I decided to go for CMbins 0.3.1 made by hillbeast.
OFC, it gave great boost to the phone...
I was thinking that there isn't much possibility to make it any better but once again I proved myself wrong...
that's a great idea though fugumod is a bit outdated.
any idea on how to enable hd2sd on that? otherwise i ll wait for hillbeast or moikop to iron the bugs on theirs...

No idea, sorry... To be honest I'm waiting for kyorakernel or astrum kernel too. Fugumod is solution because it's the best kernel for now, even outdated...
s'funny, i was thinking about this yesterday, i'm having problems with a gps app, dev thinks its because of custom rom. that got me to thinking about smonic (member) who is/was using stock jpu.
i was wondering if you could flash stock jpu, then g3mod 2.2.2 as kernel? then you would have cwm, extended power memory etc.
sd carc partition would also work?? (methinks? i have a lot of apps, and i use pretty much all of them!)
is this scenario viable????
pretty much a noob at these matters, i get it all, but i dont!!

Of course it's viable I'm advising everyone to flash eclair and take froyo supplied from your provider via kies
problem there was i flashed froyo because my provider wanted me to hand in phone and have it sent off to be updated, taking 2 weeks...
thats why i began on the slippery slope to flashing and rooting
but flashing stock jpu from the list somewhere on this site should work too? or not?
edit- maybe we should start this as a new thread, kinda hijacked this one....not intended @shadowmaniac.

If kies detects your phone you should be on your way to update. It probably wouldn't want to update it but will download ROM in temp folder. You can take it from there and flash via odin.
