[REF] Nexus S Hardware Model variants - Nexus S General

05/07/11 - Finally, nexus wiki page is updated a few weeks ago. My apologies for being under the rock this whole time. Kudos to the guys who did all the work. Thanks so much guys for helping providing these infos. Keep them coming if you have anything to add.
================================================
I think there should be a sticky, or an updated nexus s wiki, about the variants of nexus s we are having lately and upcoming
Like, for example:
gt-i9020t for t-mobile, with info like samoled, t-mobile radio band, ...
gt-i9023 for europe, with amoled/sclcd, ...
and the ones coming out in canada
==================================================
Well, I finally figured out all these technical problems I was having - Thread got moved
Anyway, I just hope that we all share what we know, correct misleading info, gather it all and hopefully someone update the Nexus S wiki page.
(like the Galaxy S page where different models are listed which I think is very helpful)

Actually, this just came up while I was about to buy myself one
Now, I am holding off because I want to get an at&t compatible one, but worried if it has sclcd which I don't prefer
As I digged deeper, the more I got confused
So I thought there should be some info on this that would help me and everyone else
Yes, I would make a thread for this, only if I had the time as I have a very tight schedule with work and school

9020 samoloed 9023 slcd
and if I'm not mistaken the 9023 is only around in europe. (which is why i have one - and let me tell you the screen isn't half bad either - the only pain is that it needs different recovery roms than the 9020 and that finding out how to unlock/root it took 10 extra minutes )

i think you guys got it a bit off...
i9020 is the original one (T-mobile USA 1700/2100 3G)
then came the i9023 (Europe 1700/2100 3G)
and it came the
i9020A (for AT&T 850/1900 3G)
and coming soon is the Nexus S 4G for sprint, which we do not yet the model code

The AT&T is 9020A, the 9020 model is Super AMOLED. Adding the A means it'll be Super AMOLED. If it was SLCD then it would be 9023A.
Sprint will probably be 9020S

Considering one has to use the rooting technics of the 9023 to get a 9020A rooted, i don't see rhyme or reason for standard in the naming convention.
I strongly suspect that 9020 means AMOLED, 9023 means LCD, the A indicates ATT, the carrier info, or A as an official variant of the base model.
I believe that the reason the 9023 guide needs to be used to root the 9020A is because of the hardware revision of the device. I don't think that the 9023's only major difference is the screen and radio, there is something else more under the hood that is making a difference in how the phone behaves. And it's these changes that are brought into future models (like the 9020A)
My Device for example is marked as "REV - 16" for it's hardware revision

this is indeed correct if you look over at the i9000 forum
all the SLCD version of the Galaxy S are coded i9003 or something with a 3, like i903 (china SLCD version), i909 (china SAMOLED verison)
so for whatever the reason they like to use 3 to mean SLCD version

Super AMOLED screen.

Just Information,
I'm from Indonesia and Baseband version is I9023XXKB3.

@jk0l
you should also list the frequency bands they operate in 3G otherwise is pretty useless to only know the models
we all know quad-band works with voice, but 3G are different for each of those
refer to my previous replies for details
the AT&T/Rogers/Fido also works on Telus/Bell
the T-mobile USA version also works with MobilityCity, Windmobile, Vidéotron

I assumed that everyone already aware of the 3g stuff since I've put down the carriers
But anyway, I've just included it as you prefer
PS. did you know that videotron still carries nexus one?
I dont know about now, but it was there the last time I checked

Don't foget that the i9023 is slightly thicker than the i9020 too - dues to the sclcd screen technology.
I found this out the hard way when buying a case for my i9023. It doesn't fit!

re: wiki
everyone is free to help update the wiki
you automatically have access to edit the wiki, for those that knows how to code in Wiki language.

GT-i9023 also can be had with a white battery cover, colour is classed as Perl White on the box.

what about the first stock model?
model Nexus S(yha thats how its model name is on my nexus s.):S
well its model GT-I9020
not I9020T.

last time i checked, england is in europe, and it has the i9020.
i'm also coming to the conclusion that the 9020a that's available in canada has improved gps drivers. of course as the phone - i'm guessing - will need root to install new drivers on the phone - those with the existing problem are sol. that's why google are 'looking into the problem' which i don't believe was not caught in testing, and is probably why a new phone has been released in canada for samsung to prove they can correct the problems.

Is this Vibrant the same as Bell's?

Just wondering if this T Mobile Vibrant is the same as far as rooting and flashing goes as the version Bell will be launching soon in Canada?
Thanks
Bump, anyone know?
To my knowledge, no it isn't. It seems like it will be the same (or atleast look the same) as the euro galaxy S
biggest consideration is to check what frequencies your carrier uses ie is it GSM or CDMA, and for 3g Data what freqs
the tmobile is GSM and for 3G Tmo uses the AWS IV band, ie 1700/2100, and it has to be both of those if you were bringing a european phone here to the USA to use on tmobile - tmobile europe only uses 2100 for 3G, no 1700
as the 2100 is the download side i figured i could live without 3g upload speed but just before pulling the trigger on a european tmobile HTC Desire i found out that if the phone didn't have both sides, ie both 1700 for upload and 2100 for download, tmo's network would hold the phone to 2G or EDGE data speeds
so best bet is to first identify Bell's freqs - and you can do that on the web -
hope that helps some
Thanks, Bell's network is 850/1900. Same as AT&T but it doesn't look anything like the Captivate. Too many models of the same phone... too confusing...
I wouldn't be concerned with looks, in fact to me (i own a vibrant) i like the captivate case better - that report endgadget.com had on the two (vibrant/captivate) liked the way the captivate's case released in the back
the vibrant you have to pop the caseback with your fingernail - its secure but kind of a chintzy way to do it, especially when the capitvate has a nice pull and release mechanism
and the rear surface has some texture for a little better grip

My guess is the standard Galaxy S form factor is a little too much like the iPhone for AT&T's taste, so they wanted one that looks different. They don't want to piss off Apple, their goose that lays the golden eggs.
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant
I've got my crystal ball tuned up...
Bell gets a unit that looks exactly like the US T-Mobile Vibrant, otherwise they wouldn't have called it that. With the AWS/2100 replaced with 850/1900, and same as the T-Mo, no FFC. Bell gets the first Canadian unit, so they got that going on for "cool factor". I'm like 95.9% sure of this.
Based on the posters for the launch party, Telus gets an GSM Epic. That makes a lot of sense, especially since they're releasing the LCD Desire very shortly...the thicker, less sleek Epic would not be in the same category, and they wouldn't have went to the expense of getting the Desire if they were getting regular non-keyboard Galaxy S variant, and vice versa. I'm about 75% sure of this.
A Telus Epic would also make a great replacement for the aging Milestone, which is now out of production, with the GSM Milestone 2 probably still months off.
Rogers gets an unknown unit. I'd lean towards them getting the Captivate style, except for the whole AT&T exclusive lock on the unit, September release of the same unit that works on the same bands seems a little soon for AT&T to give up on the exclusivity costs.
But Rogers needs something to bring to the table that's different than Bell or Telus, so they may get a GSM Fascinate (complete with camera flash). The timing matches the Verizon release window as well, and both may be waiting on Samsung to get these into full production. They may also get the Euro model complete with FFC and big home button, Rogers has a history of supporting video calling. Whatever version they release, it will most likely ship with Froyo in the box.
To confuse the Rogers matter more, the rumor in the SIM unlocking circles is that the AT&T Captivate codes won't be available until October. If Rogers ships a Captivate version of it in September, with the same name, then AT&T will start releasing SIM codes to those that ask, because it's no longer exclusivity-locked.
I'm 33% on each of the Rogers options (Captivate, Fascinate, "pure" Galaxy S)
But it's all guesswork.
That's a pretty interesting theory you have there, and it makes sense too.
Has anyone gotten any of these Galaxy S models sim unlocked yet?

This is the only part of your comment that I think I will argue with. I think the bell version will look identical to the european one. Why do I think so? Two reasons my dear watson,
A.) www . youtube.com/watch?=8QSl8FyhjJE&feature=player_embedded
This video which I believe is correct. (and I think I saw another video that was just a hands on in a small room filled with guys in suits and the one reviewer.
B.) The Samsung Canada page for this device: www . samsung.com/ca/consumer/mobile/mobile-phones/all-phones/GT-I9000HKABMC/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&returnurl=
P.S. I've also heard of rumours of Rogers coming out with a galaxy S device, and Furthermore, supposedly the release date for the Bell Galaxy S will be August 6th

AT&T Galaxy Tab

I am on AT&T for the main reason that I travel frequently to Europe and Asia (Japan, Hong Kong) and it's the carrier who happens to have devices with 3G bands compatible nearly worldwide (Even though I don't like so much the price AT&T is costing me...)
So... really considering now to switch to the Galaxy tab and say good bye to my good old TP2 (heavily overclocked so still with a bit of life in it !)
I have a few questions
1. there are rumors here and there saying the Tab for AT&T wont have the front facing camera (And then some other places where it's listed as a spec of the AT&T tab). Anybody can confirm / infirm this ? (Would be really pissed to pay such a price for the device if it has been castrated)
2. AT&T is the last US carrier not to have announced a launch date for the tab... (Maybe it's willing to be a bit nice to Apple and its recently commercialized iPad, or maybe it's just an old and slow company...). Pure speculation: is there a chance we'll be able to switch the tab bands from T-Mobile like some have successfully done with other Samsung phones from the galaxy family ?
3. Another pure speculation: has Samsung actually disabled the hardware for voice calls on the US versions ? I hope his will be solved by flashing another firmware. Otherwise I'll just end up buying an international version (Which will be much more expensive...)
You can get the unlocked north american version which should be out by next week. It will cost you an arm and a leg but WILL work with the 850/1900 at&t 3g bands. Here are a few sites that have it:

or
http://negrielectronics.com/samsung-p1000-galaxy-tab-3g-850-1900-2100-oem-unlocked.html
Hope this helps.

Thanks. Yes these bands are AT&T ones. Though waiting a few more weeks should allow to get it directly from AT&T at a lower price...
The good news is, if the websites are correct about the specs, the front facing camera is there (And I doubt Samsung will make a different Tab)
Seem to imply the voice call work to (negrielectronics) but it could be a mistake or a trick (works only through skype...) or just simple taht we are talking about an overseas model with the right 3G bands

What concerns me are the comments that suggest US carriers will somehow restrict their service to GT so only data will work (no voice). So that raises the question for those of us who get the unlocked version - how do we get our Gt on to ATT or others? I guess I'm asking which ATT phone is it close enough to that I can acuire and swap the SIM card?

Well, from what I hear is the 850/1900 band version will be an unlocked north amaerican version which can work with rogers (Canada) and at&t for the US by just adding your SIM card in. It is unknow weather the at&t network will identify the galaxy tab and change your plan accordingly if that is even how it will work with at&t. I beleive they WILL have a different plan for data for this device as T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon are following this. Also, the at&t version WILL be a different model in appreance and features as this unlocked one will not. Probablly because at&t WILL remove the front camera and who knows what else (thanks to the iphone). That is why the samsung site has not put the at&t version on their site yet. really do hope it will be treated as a PDA phone thru at&t's network (for the unlocked version)

That's funny as they told me last Friday that the warehouse in CA is expecting them on November 10th. Also, I work near the mobile city online store in NYC and stopped in there and they said this week they would have them. hmmm
UPDATE: Just sent a message to my contact @ Nergi. He said they just received the notice that this version of the tab will not be in till early 2011. You were right clubtech... Was hoping you were wrong.. lol That sucks!
Mmh all I have been reading so far sucks
Figured I would fire up this thread and bump it up as Bell is releasing the Galaxy Tab on November 12th. That will be our solution for the 850/1900 3G version I guess..? I sent a message to Nergi to see if they will have this version. I'll keep you posted.
I have my G-Tab now (Euro version with phone and data working great on AT&T in USA) Be glad to answer questions. General comment: I LOVE it! The form factor and wt are just right for me and it has all the features I miss on my iPad. Only criticism is that I find Android a bit less stable than IOS but that might be what Gingerbread or Honeycomb will address.

Are you getting good 3g coverage? I see your in PA... Close to me. I know the 1900 band does blanket this area to some degree but the 850 band is alot stronger. I think I may wait for a full 3g band with both 850/1900 bands. Seems like the bell version will be the answer to that. Glad to hear you love the device.
I read that the bell version can't make any phone calls fyi .

Yes the 3g coverage is fine in the Reading area (better than my iphone, not sure why) I made decision to go for the Eur version when it became apparent the ATT version would be limited to data (no phone) and I couldn't get an answer on whether the "North American" version (with 850 UMTS) would arrive with phone capability OK. I saw a map of ATT 1900 coverage and saw that it takes care of at least 75% of the US, including virtuall all of the East, so I'm comfortable with my decision.

need an advice

hi all
i am planning to change my phone and i am interesting in the nexus s since it is a pure android phone nothing on top of it (no samsung TW neither HTC Sence), my current phone is samsung and i used HTC and as i heared the nexus s experience is somthing defference so i would like to try it.
so what i am asking for is which model do you recomend for me and why (I9020T, I9020A, or I9023).
by the way i live out side the us and my carrier use sim card not CDMA, and i want an unlocked phone.
thank you in advance
yamen
This Thread, that is stickied in the forums here will tell you what model you will need to go with, it will either be the 19020T/i9023 or the i9020A.
The i9020T and i9023 are identical EXCEPT for the screen technology, the i9020T uses AMOLED and the i9023 uses sLCD.
Check what frequencies your provider uses then match them to the proper phone.

thank you a lot -thanks button clicked-
9020T and 9020A is basically same model (both has Amoled screen), what is different is the 3g band, 9020T is 1900mhz and 9020A is 2100mhz. you need to pick the one that meet your carrier.
the only difference from 9023, is this one has SCLCD is screen and supposed to be a international device (3g band is 2100mhz too). Which is better deppends who you ask. if i were in your shoes, i'd go with Amoled...

Precautions before buying used Venue Pro

Hi everyone. I'm buying a used, unlocked T-Mobile DVP 8GB soon, manufactured around January 2011 and is supposedly running Mango. I realize the phone is filled with issues, but they have supposedly been fixed by now. I'm just wondering if there are any specific issues I should check for before going ahead with the sale. Thanks!
No compass...yet
That's fine with me. I was thinking more along the line of things like checking all the keys to make sure they type the right letter (saw in another thread that x and z were switched for some reason), the device can be detected by a computer when connecting through USB, the phone doesn't reboot when you touch the screen, etc...
Also, what's the latest firmware/OS version for the DVP right now?

I've had absolutely no problems out of my DVP. 7.10.7720.68 is the latest OS version on mine. Yeah, the compass is a strange omission considering the hardware is there and was originally implemented but maps seems to orient just fine when I need directions. GPS is crazy fast.
Sounds good! Do you know the latest firmware version number as well?

latest DVP update is 7.10.8107 if the mobile is a factory unlocked version
if you have operator specific model like say T-Mobile / ATT then it would be 7.10.7720 or in some cases 7.10.7740
I too am considering a Dell Venue Pro. I am on Mobilicity in Toronto area and getting a decent Windows Phone that operates on AWS frequencies (1700/2100) is a challenge. T-Mobile phones are the only option but ordering a T-Mobile phone into Canada is a challenge too. It would be simply easier to drive to the NY State or Michigan and buy from a T-Mobile store and then unlock but I don't have 3-4 hours to burn. The Dell Venue Pro is easily available and is unlocked even ordering from Amazon.com.
If anyone has serious reservations please advise. Even better if someone is reading this and is on Mobilicity with this phone, I would appreciate any comments good or bad.
DVP !!
Hey,
M in India, and I got a DVP unlocked 16 gig, and I have no issues with it.
For me its the best looking phone out there
I dont care much about the specs(I mean if you compare the phones out there today, DVP lags behind), and the specs that a DVP has, is enough for me.
I have had only one stuck up, where I had to remove the battery to power it back on. That's it. Otherwise it has worked smoothly.
No other random reboot, no lag.
One thing, the camera is bad. You wont be able to take motion pictures. It will be blurry.
After Mango update, and making some changes in the settings, the still pics are gr8, but if you are trying to capture something that's moving, then m sorry, this aint the phone for you
I bought it in November 2011.
Current version:
OS version: 7.10.8107.79
My verdict: If you like classy, go for the DVP !!!
Excuse me for any typos or wrong grammar, English ain't my first language.
I picked it up yesterday, and so far I love it! There are a few things tripping me up, but nothing that i feel would push me over the age to abandon the platform like I did with Android. For one, it would be nice to be able to push enter to send an SMS using the keyboard, rather than having to touch the send icon on the screen. It would also be nice to be able to block certain numbers from calling.
Battery life does seem like an improvement over my old phone, though.
If you are purchasing new, in the US, I would question it. The phone is old hardware, at least 18 months old, I'd not more. Does not do 4g or wifi n. Simply put, why would you invest in an old device.
If you are buying used, or cheap with no contract, its worth it. But, buyer beware. A lot of used phones are showing up in a less than ideal condition, with damaged SD slots, or with the ability to reset missing. In these conditions they are virtually impossible to fix. Just be careful
That being said, these are good devices, well made and sound. I do not regret purchasing mine way back when. It was a most amazing Christmas present when received on December 21st, 2010.
Just to let you know I opted for a Nokia Lumia 710 !
Great deal here in Canada for 254.99 (from Rogers no contract) then $10 for unlock code. I know it's a completely different phone from DVP but figured I may as well get on with latest model phone for fairly cheap price. It will give me an idea if next (more expensive phone) should be the Nokia 900.
Thanks everyone for the mainly good comments about DVP.
We've discussed it for a bit here
Though if you're on rogers you actually have the choice of any of the lumias. (as rogers uses the same 3g bands as at&t and regardless prob has more choices)
TmoUSA users dont though, it's either the 710 or the VP or radar. (there's very little selection for AWS devices, that's almost literally every AWS capable wp7 device)
Yes... actually I am on Mobilicity which is same band as T-Mobile (1700/2100).
The Rogers Lumia 710 is a penta band phone so yes it works with Rogers 3 G bands and AT&T bands, and of course it works perfectly with Mobilicity ! (had to unlock it though)
Wonder if the T-Mobile version is penta band ? Also wonder why Rogers doesn't advertise this? I did some reading and found out it's penta band but if you read the specs from Rogers website it's only showing as quad-band. Quick trip to a Rogers store and reading the label shows it's penta band.

Perhaps they dont want you purchasing one and turning it to another carrier?
For a carrier sold one the supported bands arnt really relevent, as long as it supports their own band obviously.

I doubt this, because I am not sure that the Qualcomm chipset actually supports pentaband UMTS.
It's more likely that it's quadband UMTS, which would still allow it cover all UMTS frequencies for both ATT and T-Mo. As in, maybe they left out 850 or 900.
Reports are the rogers one works on wind, which is AWS like tmoUSA
That would mean it's at very least: 850/1700/1900/2100, with the question as to if it supports 900.
As: 850/1900 is what rogers uses (like at&t)
and: 1700/2100 for aws (it's more work to have a 1700 device without 2100 then to leave it in)
From my understanding, it's merely what amps the manu decides to put in, and what they decide is mostly politics.
All htc devices are dual band unless they're forced to add more
Most samsung international devices are triband or higher. (though they dont generally use qualcomm chips)
All dell devices are triband or higher (with the exception of the EU Streak 5 as the AWS is uncommon)
I cant actually confirm it as I dont actually recall seeing a 5+ band phone using a qualcomm chip.
Worst case you can do APQxxxx + MDMxxxx and use an external modem that does support it, i believe the MDM9200 explicitly supports 5 bands + lte bands.
All devices with APQ8060 chips do this, as APQ chips are by definition chips without modems. There's a few phones that use this setup.
tl;dr the rogers varient should support at least 850/1700/1900/2100, since at least on at&t they use both 850 and 1900 (not unreasonable to assume rogers does the same)

Can confirm the ATT version works on Rogers bands. Sold my unlocked DVP (ATT) to a rogers users. He reported it worked fine on 3G.

Korean Version Compatibility

Hey I have an opportunity to grab a Korean S4 (SHV-E300K/S). I am wondering if there will be any issues to using this phone in HK? The LTE bands appear to be compatible. I was wondering if the phone will be locked or if there is something that just won't work? I've never been to Korea so I don't know how phones are sold there so any insight will be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance!
Did some digging around and apparently KT telecom, (1 of the 2 large operators in South Korea) did not lock the previous release of the S3.
Also including the article which mentions the LTE bands just in case anyone's interested.

Still hoping to get some input before pulling the trigger. Thanks
I'm very interested in this, and I've been trying to do some research. I have a best friend who's brother lives in Korea and works at Samsung, and she told me that if I wanted the Korean version, he'd do his best to ship one to my specifications.
Long story short, I want the Exynos + LTE, but the information online is few and in between.

Well if you can find out anything from that person who works for Samsung that would be much appreciated. I'm willing to pull the trigger if:
a) they sell phones outright off contract in Korea,
b) the phone is carrier unlocked, and
c) I can set English menus.
I am willing to Gamble with the LTE bands and the software compatibility quirks that I may experience.
Perhaps someone from Korea can shed some light?
Thanks.

To answer your questions,
Phones are available in English menu and you only need to worry about the LTE bands as they are not carrier locked in Korea. You might need to set some settings to work in your country and chances should be high as I heard the Octa supports 20 bands of LTE.
I'm not sure what you meant by outright but you can walk into any shop and buy it if that's what you meant. Alternatively, if you know anyone in Korea they should be able to get it for you but not in the next few days because right now it seems that it's all on contract until stock are more abundant.

It would be really cool if the Korean GS4 could work with USA LTE. But the price~! Right now, it's being sold for around $1,100 USD~!
What's special about Korean models? Don't other countries have octa too?

Okay, so I'm very confused. I too have the opportunity to grab a Korean version, but instead of the OP, I reside in the US, would I run into ANY problems if I got this version? LTE I understand might possibly work/might not, but is there anything else to be concerned with?
All galaxy korean version has following problems.
1. All operator too many customizing ==> it will cause unstable, because all known that they request too many modify frameworks also.
2. Too many have bloat apps.(operator apps, avg 10 + apps exist, some apps are not support uninstall, yeah rooting will delete that apps, but it make an another error)
3. UMTS band are only 1900/2100 (official), previous galaxy have only UMTS 2100 (SKT/KT model only, LGU+ model using CDMA 1800(that frequncy only exist in korea over the world)
4. LTE band are only 850/1800. (SKT 850/1800 , KT 1800 / LG U+ 850)
5. Maybe Firmare not compatible with Global version (I930X / N710X )
6. you may not use USSD code (korean all operator doesn't support USSD code, so korean localizing version remove USSD function)
I lived in korea, but i don't use our korean galaxy models. This time I also ordered galaxy s4 on UK. Because UK model is always Europe open model and it has nearly Samsung reference model. (Doesn't have or 1~2 bloat app exist)
i'm very hate too many localizing. it will always phone make unstable.
Pulverizer, thank you for the info! I think I'll be going for the i9500 now.
Thank You to all who took the time to reply!
I'm likely going to get a local machine now to reduce the need to tinker.
This is also a very informative link from an shv-e300 user for any of those who are still fence sitters! Very good information is given at the bottom of page 3!

This information will keep me to in the US/UK LTE version.
