I am not sure if this has been resolved if it has please point me in right direction to thread. everytime I pull my battery out everything system force closes (messaging, phone, swype, android process. etc..) I read somewhere that sometimes clearing data or cache fixes this although I've had no luck, the only way I get around this is restoring to one of my back ups. is there a faster or better way around this? also I am rooted froyo 2.2/EC05 with various roms.

Are you perhaps running on the ext4 file system with journaling off?
Maybe switch back to journaling if this is the case. If not disregard and wait til a better answer comes along.

I asked the same question in a thread but sorry i cant remember which thread but i was told that doing a battery pull with phone on can cause data corruption much like how when u just like when u dont shut down ur computer properly. Hope this helps.
The only fix i was able to find was a system restore.

Pulling your battery shouldn't cause this issue, unless you pulled it before the phone was completely shut down. (You have to wait for it to go black and vibrate. This vibration happens anywhere from 2 seconds to 15 seconds after the phone goes dark, depending on which rom you are using).
It seems to be a "no journaling" issue with 95% of the people that this has happened to (including myself!!) "No journaling" is a faster set-up, but will not write needed data in the event of an unexpected/improper shut down.
No journaling/journaling is a choice we have been given by the great developers here, so it really comes down to personal preference.
As a side-note: If you have restored a backup that had jounaling "on", you don't have to worry about turning it back on now. I believe, from what I have read on here, that it reverted automatically. Also - if you restored a backup that was not ext4, then I don't think you are ext4 anymore either.
Hopefully I haven't taken up all this space telling you something you already know. In any case, I hope this helps a little!
This happened to me last night and I was pissed cause I would have lost a lot of unsaved numbers. I found the easiest fix though. Boot into clockwork > advanced > fix permissions. That simple.

Don't pull your battery until off........... these are not simple devices you can go yanking the battery out of whenever you want and its still gonna work properly.

If journaling is on then you can.
To (re)enable journaling just make a NAND backup then restore it.

Sooo how long should we stare at a frozen screen until we do pull the batt?
I finally gave up on custom roms and am sticking with stock, just for this reason, way too many FCs then I do a batt pull and I gotta reflash the rom and hope it works
.. I guess this phone just can't handle the flash dance like my HTCs could.

Guess no one tried doing what I did. Cause, you know, it's SO much harder than reflashing an entire rom and losing your data...

I gave up on custom ROMs as well. I'm on cleaned up stock and I get great battery life with plenty of speed and no debilitating errors. If (or I should say WHEN) an app decides to go batty, it only hurts itself and not my entire system.
just happened to me smh....
Turn journaling on, and search or something

Listen too him he is absolutly correct. Turn journaling on. Also you don't have to stare at a blank phone it will vibrate when its done shutting down after the display is off
Go here for 2 scripts to enable and disable journaling

I was going to tell him 2-3 hours but you have to watch cuz the led might flash and show you it's ready. I'm only feeling semi-helpful today. I gave a great fix for this on the SRF thread if you're OCD about backing up like I can be.

Installed the "official" update that was hosted on Google's servers, which worked like a charm... but...
The camera won't boot up? The phone doesn't seem to be running any faster thus far, even after moving all possible applications to the SD card. Also, the gallery shows no images.
When I hold down the camera button, or select the camera application, the phone vibrates once (to tell you the camera's booting up), the screen turns black, vibrates three times quickly, and flashes the force close screen instantaneously and returns to the home screen.
Hmmm....
I almost forgot to add: I still have the Touchwiz default issue, that is, the OS prompting me to set a default every so often when I hit the home button. I think I might have to wipe the phone.
I had similar problems so I wiped and did a clean install with Odin and now it works great!

weatherbug elite widget
i like the weatherbug elite app and widget, and for some reason the widget will not appear at all, since i updated.
I am in the process of backing up my stuff to do a factory reset to see if that solves the problem. I was waiting until this update was released before rooting. Is there an OCLF for this update?
i would suggest odining back to DI18 then odining http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209 see if this fixes your problems, i have 0 bugs with DK28.
After the factory reset, everything is working okay. I noticed that some of the prompts have strange translations, particularly when accessing the Firmware Updater under the Camera's setting menu: "It will occur additional fee. Will you continue?" The functionality is debatable at this point considering it runs into an error upon updating. Hm.
I will try Odin some other time when I have a few hours to brush up on flashing. I am not very familiar with hacking mobile phones in general, so I want to be better acquainted with the process before I dive into it. But a lag fix and bloatware delete are certainly in this phone's future!
Browser is really buggy for me. It takes up 70MB of RAM on start up and has the terrible checker boards effect.
GPS works perfectly for me on DK17 and 28.
However, it may be that I restored my data partition from a backup I made from DK17. I'll try running a factory reset and we'll see what happens.
I've noticed that when using on screen keyboard for a quick seach online, the on screen keyboard will not go away when pressing the back button sometimes. Anyone else?

I've still had some issues with the back button being unresponsive, perhaps to a lesser extent since Froyo, but I have gotten so used to it I can hardly acknowledge the problem based on recollection of testing the phone.
However, I noticed the Quadrant scores are very disappointing in both my own test and in user comments. I can't wait to root and lagfix this thing.
In addition, the physical keyboard still drops letters at random. It seems to have gotten worse since the update.

You mean root and artificially increase your Quadrant scores for bragging rights? There is no lag fix on the epic. The only "lag fix" is a "game Quadrant scores" fix.

I've got the same error with MediaHub. Looking for a Froyo apk now.
GPS is working fine for me - I had a 100% stock 2.1 that I did update.zip to Froyo. I hadn't even installed any apps or even loaded up my Google account. Literally bought the phone, waited for provision, then updated to Froyo.
What version of Media Hub are you running? Mine is working fine.

After a few issues I was able to get Nebula ROM 1.0.7 up and running on my EPIC. I really like it so far. It is much faster then the other ROM I tried out, plus it doesn't have any of the cheesey sound efffects.
I have used it for a day with no problems. My battery was getting a bit low so I shut the phone down to change batteries. I put the new battery in and when I booted it up it just went into a loop with the Nebula animation, then the 1.0.7 screen would come up and then it would just loop.
I took the battery back out, reinstalled it, and this time it boots into the phone but everything FC's. Took the battery out again and booted it back up and now this time it loads up, some things run, but others FC...
I did the clearing of all caches and user data three times along with a dalevic wipe three times... What gives??
I consider myself a computer geek, but am definately new to the rooting/custom rom thing, so I am a Noob, be gentle!!

Firstly, I'm sorry for your troubles and welcome you to the ROM scene. But I would say posting this (or looking through) the Nebula ROM thread or posting this in the Q&A section would likely end up with better results.
Secondly, I also had experienced issues with Nebula ROM 1.0.7. My recommendation is to Odin all the way back to DK28, then work your way back up to Nebula. Also, try flashing Nebula twice onto the device to try to remedy any problems.
Another tip, it seems that if you are using things like Titanium Backup that there are instances of people running into problems of backed up apps causing problems. Starting new is probably the best bet.
Hope this was of some use!
Thank you for the help.. I posted this in General because every other day I see people getting ripped into for not posting in General, so to be honest I have been scared to post anywhere else... But I have read the Nebula thread, not all 110+ pages, but quite a few of them. I am going to Odin back to DK28, format my SD card, and start from scratch, then try reinstalling all of my Apps.
I just think it is wierd that it worked flawlessly for a whole day without one FC and then when I changed my battery it went to hell.
The even stranger thing is some apps work fine, and then others FC everytime. Seems to be no rhyme or reason..
Only other thing I am thinking is I installed a bunch of new apps today and wondered if that could be part of the problem...
Oh well, it has made me more aware of what is going on behind the scenes with my phone.
I could be totally wrong, but I think that's due to it being an ext4 with no journaling rom. Without that safety net its possble for data to be corrupted. sinse I switched to ext4 with no journaling I started letting the phone turn off instead of just pulling out the battery.
Like I said tho I could be wrong on this. Back when I was on the moment I had ext2 which doesn't have journaling either and if the data became currupted somehow, it would cause the symptoms you are explaining.

Ah, alright. I'm not too certain as I'm unaware of a good deal of the inner workings of Android, but I do hope things get straightened out for you. My phone still has some apps that act up sometimes, mostly JuicePlotter it seems.
Hanging arround... I forgot my last un and passwd(I had an htc tilt a while ago... now I can't post on dev forum...) to use 1.0.7 I think you need ext4 (at least I'm using it) some apps are giving troubles with ext4. So try one by one, and use the cwm3 backup system. At least for me is easier and safer than tit or backup pro.

Sorry I missed this yesterday, but I wanted to say that I had the same problem updating to 1.07 and I had already gone back to DK28 stock w/ CWM3 before the upgrade. I also restored some apps and settings selectively using titanium. One thing that we may have in common is that I ran my battery ALL the way down accidentally after this upgrade, tried turning it on a couple times (and it would shut down right away) and when I plugged the phone back in I got the repetitive force closes when I tried to turn it on.
Anyhow, I recharged completely, started from stock DK28 again (and wiped the battery stats) and even with restoring the same settings from Titanium I have been running it for about a week now and it is rock solid. So, give it another shot and see how it goes...
The short version is I got everything working!! And Nebula 1.0.7 is the fastest rom I have used yet... But don't get too excited because this is only the third I've tried, and one of the other two is stock DK28.
What I ended up doing was Odin'ing back to DK28, installing CW3, and then doing the 3x3 clears. Then I also formated everything I could find in CW. Installed the Nebula Rom and still had an issue. Rebooted back into CW3 and then reinstalled the ROM again, and whalla.. It works.
I think for some reason you have to install it twice.. Strange I know..
I had force close issues as well, and all I did to fix it was go into CWM, and format/clear cache partition, and format/clear the dalvik-cache. Did this cache clear and dalvik clear 3 times.

I second this as a possible problem. Shut the phone off 100% before removing the battery. On the moment that I also had if you removed the battery or used quick boot with ext2 you faced possible data corruption, but there were kernels that would check and fix data. You'd end up in a boot loop though if it didn't repair.

I've had that a few times myself, I think its due to a bug in whatever rom your using. I personally have no had that problem in a while because I am using a rom exclusive to a site I help out.
Either flash a new rom to see if it goes away or reflash the existing one. In these odd cases, I usually try a different to make sure it is not the phone. Also, you can go into recovery and go to advanced and then wipe battery stats there to get a fresh start

I have this weird problem, and I can't figure out the cause.
Whenever I use my phone lately, it will randomly freeze/force close certain apps. It's super laggy. If I drag my hand/palm across the touch screen, it will stop lagging and perform all the touch commands that I had "queued" up. This seems to persist even though I just wiped+flashed my phone again.
I've got nandroid backups for my stock hero, CM6.1.0, and now I just wiped and flashed to CM7.0.2. Sitting in the CM7.0.2 setup wizard as I type this, and it's lagging like crazy. Is it possible my Hero is internally damaged somehow and that's causing the problems, or does it sound like software? My Hero has been through a LOT of bumps, some harder than any phone should have to endure.
Still, I'm strapped for cash and making the best of what I've got. Anyone got any ideas? Is it possible that I screwed something up using the adb shell when I was a little nooblet? And that said, is there anyway to wipe everything and start with a completely clean slate?

First when a rom is starting up, it's likely to be SLOW, for 2 reasons, kernels need to "warm up" and the market is probably downloading a crapload of apps (this is a new feature). Second, it sounds like maybe you're device is running low on RAM, I would suggest you get an app from the market called "autokiller" and set the preset called "optimum". Third, go into settings/cm settings/performance and then set your governor to interactive 352-691 or ondemand 264-691. Fourth, go read a LOT of the threads in here and learn some stuff that will help you. Fifth, what recovery are you using and what exactly did you "wipe". Sixth, what do you mean could you have messed something up with adb shell?

1. Yeah I know that. I hadn't had this problem until the last couple months. Until then, it was more or less okay. The problem is, it really is a completely fresh rom.
2. The Hero is kind of a low memory phone to begin with, so that's certainly a possibility. 2.2 and 2.3 aren't exactly kind on old hardware.
3. I don't have those settings in 6.1.0. I was using SetCPU for awhile with it at 480-7XX (Can't remember, I think 791, as that was max) and OnDemand. I had some screen off, temperature, and battery profiles too.
4. Any specific threads I should read you can suggest? I was lurking on the forums for awhile before I did anything to my phone (didn't want to brick it).
5. I'm currently using Amon RA 1.6.2. I considered clockwork, but some people said it has more problems. I've heard complaints that Amon RA requires signed packages, but frankly it hasn't been a problem thus far. It actually saved me from bricking my phone when I was new to this whole thing. As for what I wiped, I simply went through Amon RA and wiped data, dalvik, battery stats and rotation. Don't know what battery stats/rotation are, but I am familiar with the Dalvik cache.
6. As for saying I could have messed something up, when I was flashing my phone, it was something I'd never done before. It's certainly possible I mistyped something or screwed something up.
I was hoping someone could help me to completely wipe it and start fresh, since I'm sure it's had its share of problems.
I would suggest flashing clockwork. You can wipe more areas of the system then the one you have. And it has more features. I personally made the switch.
As for your lag, it might be your hardware. If you did a clean install and wiped boot, system, cache, data, and dalvik, and installed the latest stable release and it's still laggy? Then things are not looking good brother.
You experience the same thing on a sense base ROM?
also it could be cpu govenors because usually by default most roms have it set to ondemand witch has always caused problems for me and as soon as i set it to performance its fine.

I tried using RomManager to flash Clockwork, and it still booted to Amon RA recovery. I'm going to try to use ADB to do it, but I don't know that I'll be able to.
EDIT: Manually pushed ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7 onto my Hero.
Before I touch any of these settings, what will format boot, format system, formata data, and format cache do? Can it brick my phone, or will it let me flash a ROM onto a completely clean phone?

You will not brick, that is how you wipe. You should also wipe dalvik cache. Go to this site for really good instructions :

So I downloaded the 2.1 update from the HTC website, ran it, and it completed with no problems. Phone booted up, and now I'm trying to go through the tutorial, lagging all the while. It's almost impossible to type.
Does this mean it's hardware related?
sorry for not posting sooner but lagg isnt usually caused by hardware the kernal probably has to worm up also is it the 2.27 software update or 2.3 because 2.27 lagged pretty bad anyway and if your typing with vibrate on keypress try turning that of it always helped me.

I had to start from scratch several times and my phone was pretty snappy when I first started it up after RUU. Also you stated your phone was fine and then just started running slow for no reason, was this after it took a bump?
are you talking to me or rjhall lol

sorry, RJhall..
I don't recall it taking any bumps before it just stopped working like it has.
However, I have found how to "fix" the problem. If I squeeze the sides of the phone in, it stops lagging and works. Any touch motions of queued up will then immediately execute. Any idea what in the phone is physically broken?

Never had mine apart, maybe someone has and can help..
Okay so things have gotten increasingly weird. It used to be that squeezing the sides of the phone allowed the touch screen to work. Yesterday that stopped working altogether. Today, the screen stopped turning on at all. The LCD simply doesn't turn on. Pressing the red button turns on the phone (it vibrates when turning it on) and when the phone is on, pressing the red button lights up the keys (so I know it's waking the phone up). I took the phone apart (much simpler than I thought it would be) but I was unable to find anything that seemed out of place or broken. Does anyone have any ideas?
Incubus has posted a rooted version of the OTA in the Devolpment forums! That is all....

The radios don't always mean better signal or faster 3G. They vary by location and phone... the leaked radio sucked for me and the 11.19 one seems best so far.

And the leaked radio worked best for me, its gunna vary for everyone

well i found 5.06 worked pretty well for me but i have been on most of them i only left it because people were saying it killed the wifi on their phones... as long as large numbers of reports of the same thing from 7.7 dont occur ill probably stay on that one...
Can someone who has flashed this try out the speech to text and see if it works properly?
Navigation or anything. Texting or anything. It some of the GB roms with the EVO framework and issues with speech to text.
Well this isn't the EVO GB Release. It's the actual Incredible release. But yes the speech to text does in fact work.

I know. I'm currently on Joel's shooter rewind 3d and working voice search would be the only thing to tempt me off of it.
Sweet
First post on XDA here, I registered primarily to give props to Joel and Incubus.
I grabbed the rooted OTA Incubus posted and flashed it with Rom Manager. Took a lot of patience, but it went pretty smooth. Thanks to you both (and everyone else who had a hand in this).
My DInc is just about to go out of warranty, so I'm going to be trying some other ROMs pretty soon. I'm pretty much locked into the root/S-Off status now, and I'm happy with it that way. I think I'll be hanging on to this phone for some time.
So far I like this update, but I've had a few random reboots. One or two while I was re-installing some of my apps or moving them to the SD card, and at least one while it was just sitting there on the charger.
For the moment, I'm going on the assumption that this is just some early stuff working itself out. When flashing the ROM, I cleared the Dalvik cache, but didn't do a data wipe. Anyone have any idea if this is a problem?
Again, thanks a million guys!
( Oh, LOVE the noob video! )

Well first off, welcome! And yes. You should ALWAYS wipe data, cache, and dalvik at the minimum. It ensures that you have a better experience without lag, freezing, FC's, etc.. You have to do the setup every time, but it's worht it and you get used to it. And most devs don't recommend using Rom manager since it's known to have some issues, you're best bet is to go install through your CWM recovery.

I flashed it. Got in my car, sped up to 35 and tried a Voice Search. Like with the GB leak, google voice search throws up its hands and can't understand you.

Wow, seriously, ALL data? That means having to set up multiple mail accounts (GMail, private, work) and re-installing all my apps - well, Titanium at least.
Initially, I took over a month to get my phone just the way I liked it, and still wound up tweaking the hell out of the look and feel on a regular basis. Can application data backed up with Titanium be restored to get most of that back? Seems like it would take hours to get it back either way. I never found a thread on this, so I apologize if it is answered somewhere - I'd love to get a link to that thread if it is out there.
Now I think about it, this has been the biggest hurdle to my trying different ROMs. Screw the suits whining about how I use the services and devices I pay for, I just don't have the time to be messing with it that much.
Again, thanks for the info!
Cheers!
What did I do wrong? I DL'd the file in the thread, put it onto my SD card, then turned my phone off.
I rebooted into recovery (power and volume down button), chose update from .zip on SD card. Picked the file and let it update...
Now my phone will boot up and just stay stuck on the "Droid" screen. Any help?
was I supposed to rename the file or anything? Please help, my phone is stuck right now...
Install zip from sdcard not update... And u should of wiped data cache all that junk if u didn't do that

Did you wipe anything? You should do a full wipe (data/system/cache/dalvik/etc.) before flashing a new ROM.
Cant wait for a 2.3.4/3.0 sense Rom.

You can back up app data, but it is strongly recommended that you don't back up system data. And yes it means starting all over, and I too was skeptical to start over when I first started flashing ROMs, but now it takes me about 15-20 minutes to setup everything again. But then again I only reinstall about 45 apps.

Boot into recovery and wipe everything 3x. Next choose install zip, then after that DO NOT CLICK ON update.zip, select choose zip from SD, then find your downloaded file (wherever you put it) and select that.
Has anyone tried any Bluetooth devices? Keyboards or such to see if we did in fact get the full bt stack?
