Using the Search Feature... - Droid X General

Is there anyone here that can produce a detailed guide for using the search feature?
I am not being a smart ass either. It seems to be an utter pain in the ass for me to use.
All BS aside I would benefit from a few examples as well.

Are you talking about when you press the search button?

I am talking about the search feature in these forums

I agree! I also find it near impossible to actually find anything your looking for on search.
Sent from my 2.0 Liberated DX using XDA

To he honest I almost never use the search feature in these forums but I will almost always find the answer I'm looking for. What I find that works is Google. If you're looking for something, we'll use an sbf for example, just search key terms. For this example I'd search Droid x 2.3.340 sbf or whatever system version I needed.
Is this what you were looking for?

Android XDA frontend

Is there an XDA forum browser-type of app for the G1 that anyone's made?
If so, where can I find it?
Just curious because it's a bit taxing to have to open up Browser/Steel and navigate from there... I guess I'm just lazy though.
Mods, if this is in the wrong subforum I apologize, it seemed like it was in the right place to me
umm bookmarks? im happy my g1 has such a nice web browser.
I don't think one has been made yet, but I'll second the need for it. A site like XDA just isn't very readable when you have to pan multiple times to finish a sentence.
really? how do you have such a problem? i use the default browser or sometimes opera and its readable and speedy even on EDGE. do you have bad eyes?
A nice low/zero graphics forum skin would be good. That way it would work for the WM users too.
I'm sure there'll be one already out there for vbulletin.
Probably not for the development section though, this topic.

i have the browser autofit and its ok, but the links on the top i have to pan acrossed, plus clicking search and your notifications has posed issues for me in the past, xdas forum isnt 100% g1 browser friendly at the moment, so some small app to browse xdas threads would be great, especially if it listed the threads kind of like when in the market you see different sections there for different types of apps, have the different android threads, and then in there be able to scroll down and maybe even have the app notify you via the notification bar of a new post rather than via email, just an idea
i definately agree with an app for this
wouldn't the site itself have to make a mobile specific version like many sites do for the iphone (and the G1 sometimes)?

Hey! thats on reason why this is my favorite forum software.
PDA
Post this in the apps and games section. This is the development section.
Anyway we can just expand on the PDA forum view?
PDA View
I've set up a mobile version of AndroidClubhouse. It automatically detects when someone accesses the forums through a mobile device, and defaults them top a special mobile template.....its not perfect, but it works much better than trying to scroll a full forum.. If A mod or Admin from XDA wants to hit me up, I'll link them what they need to make a G1 friendly version.
Once again, sorry mods for making the job more of a hassle and putting it in the wrong subforum
I only have Edge where I live so the browser takes a while to load up, it takes longer to pan around and such and you can't really use the browser very well if you only have one hand available (a lot of my texting/emailing/browsing takes place while I walk) but then again that's just me.
If you're going on the site from the browser though, you have to type it in the address bar or go to bookmarks and click on it. For us lazy people, it would be easier to just click to open an app and you're already there. Lol

HTC Dialer on Nexus One

I ran into this issue with my G1, and the workarounds were kludgy at best. is there any possibility of getting the HTC Dialer from say - the droid eris - on the nexus one? I had it with my g1 on the rogers rom, but lost some key functionality(for me anyways). Since the nexus one isn't carrier specific, I'm going to assume that there aren't going to be too many roms floating around.
So does anyone else feel like this is a HUGE miss on htc's part? The android dialer is 'ok', but it's so much easier to dial the first 2 or 3 letters of someone's first and last name and have it pop up in a list rather than go to my favorite tabs and scroll up and down looking for who i want to call.
Granted, this is google's baby, so it's free of outside software, but come one. They can't honestly think the shipped android dialer is better...could they?
I'd love to hear someone chime in and say that they've got it running, but seeing as how the htc frameworks are rooted incredibly deep into the os, i'll assume that's a no-go. I'll settle for some feedback though. Does anyone miss this feature?
No, the android 2.1 dialer is way better than HTC's version.
Tip: You can search for users in the general search tool. Just press the search button, and start typing the name. A lot faster than browsing through the contact list.

Superdial doesn't work on 2.1 either
I'd been using the free app superdialer from the market for this same functionality. Unfortunately it isn't working with the 2.1 contacts list quite yet
t9 contact search on the dialer itself is indispensable. I don't know why this isn't part of the stock dialer.

Better ? And in which way because I can't see it ?
Try StarContact
I agree with the OP. I don't understand why Google doesn't offer T9 support on the default dialer. It is in my top 5 frustrations with Android.
That said, I've been using StarContact (in the market) since it first came out for the G1. It works on the Nexus as well. The HTC dialer is still better, and I loved it when I had the Rogers rom on my G1. Too bad that rom stopped at 1.5.
spelldial from market works with 2.1 now and is amazing.
Start asking your questions in the right sub-forum (Q&A) (Theme) or even in (General), or simply search.......This isn't a developmental subject, Thank you.
Final result will be a ban for you up too 3 days.
If you persist on posting in wrong forums.
Thread Trashed!!
Rule that apply:
1. Search before posting
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search function with google' in the menu above each and every page in the forum.
its still here lol
yup. missing that t9 capability that's nice in the htc dialer... the android one seems rather empty of features...
I'm getting really sick of all of the people who won't post their questions in the right forum. Also, I'm sick of people asking how to get HTC proprietary apks to work on the Nexus. If I can get a dump of a sense UI on 2.0 or later with the right screen resolution I will port it. Until then, you can't get HTC apps to work on the Nexus. So quit asking, please.

What he said.
Also, turn off "Web Search" and "Music" in settings for the Google Search
widget, and you'll have a very fast, handy way of getting into contacts from
the home screen. Turning off "Web Search" only turns off Web Suggestions btw.
Type in whatever you want and hit enter and it'll take you to the browser.
PS: Yes, this is the wrong section, but this had to be said
Well I think a ban is a bit harsh. It would take less time to just move the thread and close it vs posting a huge post... which can be equally wasteful. Being a new upcoming N1 owner and new to Android, all of this is new to me as well. I think the Development forum would be accurate IMO.
Anyway. Good thing this thread wasn't deleted because it has some useful information. My neighbor has a N1 and it was one thing that I noticed it lacked. SpellDial looks like a good fix until Google adds this functionality in the stock dialer. Also, good info on the Google Search options, I'll try that too.
An app called dial one brings this. It's free in the market and works excellent.
It's Dialer One and it rocks

[Move To General] What XDA Needs

Ok I love the xda forum but there are some things that tick me off and I feeli should say what I need to say to better this forum
1. XDA needs some sort of live chat service for those who need help and answers quick
2. We need more people with knowledge in rooting and flashing roms on and to anwser questions
3. Better tutorials because these tutorials aren't that straight foward and is a bit difficult make a for dummies.
Post what you think xda needs to do to better this site

3 things I can think of right away:
1. A limit on how big your signature is. I'm so sick of seeing 1 line post and half-page long sig with bunch of worthless info in there (including your last 10 phones, gaming consoles, your cars) and load of meaninless pictures.
2. A waiting period between time when one registers and time when they can post. So many people register, don't read anything and just ask stupid questions over and over again. I'm oficially done holding people's hand to do anything that was walked-through before.
3. A required field with phone info (including bootloader, radio, rom, etc). No more guessing.
Yes, I'm demanding but I really see these forums degrading over the time.

He's not so wrong. I also noticed in the last time, that several times the same question was asked, even if the answer to the question was already given one or two days ago.
In addition it would help much to know, what is already installed on the phone, especially SPL and RADIO. So you can suggest directly some steps, without asking first about the configuration. Probably we can provide a template for the information which should be included within the signature.

How can I learn to develop for this this phone?

I'm totally new to developing and programming all together. I know there is a stickied thread for developing beginners but the ROM Kitchen compilation does not list this phone as compatible therefore I don't know if it will be usable or not. Any help would be appreciated. I wanna start learning!!

You need how to use kitchen first, IMO.

Dsixda Kitchen and Archikitchen both work well for our phone. It takes a bit of reading and tinkering around but it works. Do a Google search for Scott's ROMS, there is some great info there on building your own ROM from scratch. The link is at the bottom of the main page and in a small link at the bottom of the second page. I haven't posted a link because I'm not sure if we can link to other forums on XDA.
What you are asking is an extremely broad topic.
If you want skills that will last you a lifetime, take a programming class and then attempt to build a Wanam Exposed module of your own. If you want skills which will last a year or less, learn about ROM kitchens.
But IMO you need to learn how to search this site first.

Without being a jerk, you could simply not reply to him at all...how bout that.
OP - there is a entire dev section on XDA. Just use the search to locate it. Or watch some YouTube videos to get a beginner course.
Good luck!

LOL. Pot, meet Kettle. Kettle, meet Pot.
But I don't remember calling anybody names.
I just ran that search I recommended - 73 different threads. I would have posted a link to the search results, but I'm pretty sure they are tied to a forum session key and/or are only cached for a short amount of time, so there isn't much of an alternative to saying "use the search function".
And the other advice I gave - attempting to write a Wanam Module after learning a little bit of programming - would propel someone down a path where they would end up understanding exactly how apps work / interact with framework classes / load resources / etc. They would then know how to deal with *any* Android device from a UI-centric point of view.
Nothing wrong with using a ROM kitchen; but someone who is entirely new to it (as the OP suggested) is probably better off trying to create a ROM by hand the first time through. They will actually learn something doing that. Thereafter, if they want to use a "kitchen" to speed up some of the drudgery, at least they will then have some idea of what is going on under the hood.
cheers
Op I agree that your post is broad. If you know how to theme then you probably know how to diff. To me that's a great way to break things down and learn how things interact. I'm far from an RD or any of those coveted tags people get when they create a bunch of awseomesauce, but I have some experience. Grab the stock base beans made and release a Rom. Debloat, theme and put it out there. You will get feedback on what you need to learn. Then you can port stuff from different carriers or roms(giving credit of course). I never learned how to use a kitchen. Just apktool or an apkmanager. Also, if you can get involved with a group of people they can push you and give you critical feedback on your design and development. The Verizon boards need more people like y'all who are willing to learn. It's amazing how many files need editing to make a solid rom...it really takes a lot of time. I'm willing to answer questions if you have anything specific.
I use winmerge. It's very helpful in finding xml and other file changes.

[Q] App Help

I think this is in the right topic area, but it was the closest I could find. I'm looking to create an app for android (which I can eventually add to the play store), that contains buttons of a sort in the fact that if you tap on the screen in once place one thing will happen and in another place, something else. Can anyone recommend the software I should use to create this app? Also, what language would be best for it. I think I already know the answer to this, and it may seem like a stupid question, but I don't want to presume and get it wrong. Thanks!
I think you should use android studio that's the best android app development tool used...
