Hey i had purchased the galaxy 3 months ago.In the stock firmware i get the gps lock in around 3-4 minutes in india. But the moment i had changed the gps server from north-america.pool.ntp.org to in.pool.ntp.org i get the gps lock in 5 sec with 10 sat's.
For your region gps server do visit the website pool.ntp.org
did someone try it?
I found a special fasterfix program that does the same...
where to change the gps server???
my phone is rooted i only need the location of the file
Will be nice to post how u did that?
@Humpie - if there is a program doing that same please share with us its name
I'm not full of strange to start digging in internal android files without know what to do
use root explorer (or similar) and navigate to /system/etc/. set it to read/write mode (in the upper right corner there is a button for that) and edit the gps.conf file as written above
whatever i do i cannot get a lock it's saying that it cannot get a fix on my location
i changed it from europe to india(in)
am using a custom rom-kyrillos v4 rRC

This is a MOD posted today in IRC(#thunderbolt) today by Ziggy471 that has improved GPS lock for myself and others that have tried it.
Instructions:
With Root Explorer (or similar app) go to /etc/gps.conf
In Root Explorer long press on the file and select open in text editor
Change the first line from: NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org to NTP_SERVER=us.pool.ntp.org
Save changes and reboot

Just did the mod. GPS signal picked up in less than a minute. Used to take 10-15mins. Thank you!

No, pretty sure it just tells GPS where to look first, then if it doesn't find you there it looks elsewhere. It may just take an extra few seconds, but I think it basically gives it a starting point.
Doesn't really help me... Why does gps respond better with wifi simply turned on... Doesnt need to be connected just turned on

I have same issue. With about all custom ROM/kernel combos I get location errors or my sense clock widget tells me I'm in Philadelphia when I am in Kansas, unless I simply turn WiFi on. Not connected, just on. If I turn it on and my location works....
Worked great for me, GPS was always taking several minutes to find me, but after this it locked on in about 10 seconds.
Thanks!

Guys I made a flash-able install zip for this MOD for my ROM Tesla Coil but it should work with any ROM http://bit.ly/icAl0c
My gps locates me 2 blocks away from where I'm at lol not cool

There is also an app that does this. It was very popular with the samsung fascinate users since their GPS lock times sucked at first. Thanks though
my gps is always good anyway, but i flashed this and it locked instantly. Nice...

My GPS issues appear to have been weather related. Worked fine today.
Wow fast lock!
No difference for me. Mine locks instantly with or without the mod.
I have a problem where if I haven't rebooted the phone for a couple days, the GPS doesn't locate me in Maps, Zillow, etc. Launch Maps or Zillow, it will just sit there with the big blue shaded circle with the center no where near me, and the GPS icon flashing... or Navigation saying "searching for GPS" when trying to get directions..
Power off/on... GPS finds me quick.
Will this mod fix that?
Another quick fix for GPS that I've found is GPS Status. Download GPS Status from the Market, click menu->Tools=>Manage A-GPS state->Download. It just makes sure you have the latest Assisted GPS data from the web.

Hello everyone ...
I upgraded to Gingerbread, I realized that there was no longer among the programs the compass ... So after downloading it again, opening it, I realized that was not working properly, so I had to calibrate ... Then I also downloaded fasterfix from the market ...
Result GPS and FIX my SGS are back to work!
In the hope of being useful to you I apologize for the English translation is not so accurate!
Let me know if this suggestion helped you solve your problems with GPS and FIX!!
I downloaded a free aps called Gps Aids (from Market) and now the GPS on my SGS (froyo) works beautifully.
what about 2.3.4 FW?
I use fasterfix on 2.3.4
Alwais remember to calibrate your compass... And if u don't know how try search on google... ;-)
GPS Aids is the best apk for GPS fix...
Regards
It works thank you for sharing.

I dunno about all the above gps applications as to how good they are, cos they workat different levels of efficiency at different times, but I have seen that if you have the correct gps.conf file based on the geographical location (continent preferably) it has always given me a within 30 sec lock and a <30 m accuracy everytime.
I am able to install Google Maps 6.1, but it cannot determine my location via wifi. Anybody can help to get this done ??? I tried to put NetworkLocation.apk into /system/app
No gps thingy on the fire. There's a gps tether thread around here where you can use another devices gps info to. Do navigatin

I just want to use Wifi to determine location, I think I can do that in CM7, but I cannot find way to enable it in stock ROM

See the other (long) thread about this ... it does NOT work, sadly, and nobody can say why it doesn't, nor is there a fix.
Hey guys after I downloaded sygic navigation I'm starting to use the GPS a lot more. It just takes forever to find a lock when I'm not even moving. Is there any way to decrease the lock time? I've already flashed the GPS file for my area but it still takes awhile. Anyone have any ideas?

what I always do in every room is, download romtoolbox go to rootbrowser, open etc/GPS.conf and the change the servers according to the country I'm living, then save, by doing that I get a lock in less then 10 sec using 3g network

Thats what the angle death .zip files do. But thanks!
Actually now that i realize it, its not the actuall locking time, its that say when i have sygic open, and i leave the program, it drops my GPS lock and now i need to wait for it to lock again once i re-enter the program and that is VERY annoying. Same thing with Google maps and my weather app for looking at radar.
I live in Mississauga, Ontario (Canada) and Google Now thinks I live in Hornby, Ontario which is like 45min away from me. Google maps seems to get my exact location (the GPS doesn't lock on it keeps saying "searching for location" or something like that but still shows me exact right location- when I have a SIM the GPS lock works perfectly). Google Now however doesn't fiind my right location with or without a SIM (always connected to internet via wi-fi). When I ask things like "what the weather" or "how's the traffic" it will give me information based on if I was in Hornby which I am not.
This has been going on for a couple of months now and is driving me CRAZY!
Any insight would be helpful - Thanks!
Have u tried putting it in manually?
Go to menu>settings>my stuff>places
Then manually type in your location. I was having the same issue but doing it this way fixed it.

You can tell Google now to give you the temperature for that location for example, "what is the weather like in Buffalo, New York?" Give her a location and she'll reply back.

That is a workaround if I have to and cannot find a solution to where this would just work
