rom stability - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

my brother wants to get an hd2 and have me flash an android rom. but he's going away soon and he won't bother learning how to do it himself don't ask. what are the chances of recent roms crashing after a certain period of time and if so when? gingerbread roms specifically.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

if crash just redo again
just make sure u had hspl installed

I am using tytung's Gingerbread ROM since a month and a half ago, and the only time when I had a crash (phone turned off by itself) was when I installed a new version without wipe cleaning/reset to defaults the phone first.
But I keep the ROM clean with a "low usage" (only install a minimum of apps, do not use app2sd and when there is a new version, no emails, twitter, internet only ocassionally via WiFi (no 3G data plan)).
I would say the chances of a crash are very low IF you respect the installation procedure (especially wipe clean the phone before you install a ROM) and you ar not abusing your phone.
Anyway, all these ROMs not 100% compatible, so you will definitely have some problems with it, but it is well worth it, at least in my opinion. Actually, I bought the phone especially because it was possible to install android on it

No offense intended but your brother needs to learn how to do it himself as you will not always be around.
I have been using Hyperdriod for like two weeks and not the first problem with it.
Also make sure, unless you use cLK as the bootloader instead of MAGLDR, to tell your brother to not let the phone completely drain the battery to where it cuts off by itself as you can not charge the phone if the phone is off if you are using MAGLDR.

1.5 -> 2.1 upgrade process?

I'm still running Fresh 1.1. I've been holding off on the upgrade to a 2.1 ROM since I use this phone daily for business, and CAN'T have a ROM that has things missing or broken, or that just has general annoyances that interfere with the usability of the phone. It looks like we finally have some 2.1 ROMs that really are "100%" (there were claims going back awhile ago, but they definitely were not "100%").
My question is: What is the exact upgrade process, and what is the impact of that process? There are tons of threads about these 2.1 ROMs, but none have detailed specific install steps and explain exactly what you're doing. The threads seem to be targeted towards those that have a "disposable" state of their phone, not those that need a consistent and reliable phone.
It seems to be consistent that these upgrades require a factory and dalvik cache wipe. What exactly does that do? I have ~20 apps installed from the market, and they're probably 50/50 paid and free. Will these disappear during the wipe/upgrade process? Will they auto-reinstall from the market? If not, what is the best way to back them up and restore them? What other data will I lose and need to restore after the wipe/upgrade? I'm ready to move to a 2.1 ROM, but can't risk losing data or spending a couple days rebuilding my phone back to a usable state.
cmccracken,
I have been running 2.1 based roms since the Eris leak and have been very satisfied and have come to the place that i am currently experiencing no problems, however, I would advise you to wait if you are using your phone for business because all current Sprint based 2.1 roms Damage, Flipz, Regaw, etc) have the potential to leave you with no audio (no audio in calls, rings, notifications). This is a random problem that is not affecting everyone but just know it could happen. Rethink this move until the devs here can fix the audio problem for sure.
Yowza, that's scary. It would be nice if ROM dev's would actually list known issues and remove bogus "100%" claims. Flakey audio on a phone for even a portion of users is NOT "100%" by any stretch of the imagination.
I'd still like to see an explanation of the upgrade process, and what the impact to apps and data is.
Well, for most people these roms are 100% (just not for a select few and no one knows why yet).
As for impact of data etc. If you upgrade to a 2.1 rom, you will loose everything. All apps will be deleted (although thy can be backed up with Titanium backup, an app on the Market)You can still use your paid apps. All themes will be deleted. All contacts will be deleted, though they will resync as long as you have them backed up through your Google acct. All saved texts and emails will be deleted. This will be a complete wipe and I would strongly advise you to try 2.1 if you were only using your phone for personal use, but business......

hello,
when you change firmware versions (1.5 to 2.1) you will need to wipe data. basically start over. everything on the sd card will stay (pictures, music, anything you've downloaded) but all apps and app data will be gone. never fear, your market history will be there still and any paid apps you don't need to pay again. even your free ones should still be in your download history. then after a while your contacts will get pushed from gmail and pretty much all you will need to set up is individual app settings/ custom ringtones/ custom sense setups.
you get used to it after a few times
EDIT: but yes if you use your "phone" a lot for calling you may experience the no-audio (i haven't...yet) and sometimes your phone will ring and then freeze up you won't be able to answer the call. that's irritating

first I use my phone to run 2 different businesses and have been running 2.1 since the first eris build with no problems. I would strongly suggest making the change as now we are building off of the actual sprint leaks everything works out of the box. and considering that from the way the 2.1 releases have been for the droid sprints "official" 2.1 will more than likely come in the form of an RUU anyways and you will lose everything. so why not make the switch now.
second yes there are some that have the sound problem but that seems to be the only issue if you use wither damage control or fresh 2.0d the new zen one still needs a fix for the market so that would not be the way for you to go if you dont want to fix it. also just so you know by your logic even the sprint 1.5 release could not be considered "100%" as even it had its bugs and there are people that have issues. you have to understand that we basically have computers in our pockets and with that comes some bugs. hell even the market leader in personal comp OS's (microsoft) just sometimes does not work right on some peoples comps. This is the reality that we live with in a world of tech. in the world of software NOTHING is EVER gaurented to work for 100% of the people 100% of the time. if you can find a company that pulls that off let me know so that I can buy stock. lol
as far as the upgrade process goes it is pretty much the same as when you flashed fresh 1.1 download the zip, put it on the root of your sd card, boot into recovery, choose the wipe option and then choose wipe data/factory rest and wipe dalvick cache, go to the option flash zip from sd, choose the proper file, flash, reboot, enter info, done.
1.5 doesn't work 100% either by our standards. Flipz 1.1 is a step in the right direction, but the underlying version of the OS is flawed.
2.1 makes the phone work better, period. Ive tried almost every ROM around for this thing, and I'd have to say the latest Flipz offerings are pretty spot on. I dont have anything not working at this point. Sure there are some minor annoyances, but nothing deal-breaking. Plus when you get used to the process, its easy to update to a new rom or figure it out and patch yourself if you DO find a problem.
Sure there are some having odd issues, but their numbers are low (or theyre not posting) and every problem ive been able to either
A)try wiping and reflashing more than once
B)go back to my old install via backup/recovery (nandroid...recovery image)
The benefits of 2.1 far outweigh the very minor bugs ive encountered . Just getting rid of the laggy moments sold me on the 2.1 v 1.5.
BTW When is a device ever at 100% working? Ive never seen it.

The Long & Winding Road To Android 2.2 on HD2

If you're like me, a subpar or incomplete Android 2.2 on HD2 experience was NOT an option. I've been through pretty much every combination, followed everyone's advice and always ended up unhappy for one of several reasons :
1. The ROM I installed was missing features, like the camera or other features that crashed.
2. The dreaded "Sleep of Death"
Not to say anything against any of the ROM chefs, because these guys are hard-working geniuses and they do this for free... for us...
But having said that, I had to keep trying. I'm obsessive compulsive when it comes to my gadgets and once I had a taste of Android on the HD2, I knew I wouldn't be happy until I found that elusive combination that made it work the way I wanted it to.
If you're having trouble making Android work on your HD2, listen up... Because now mine works like a charm and here's how it happened...
1. You absolutely HAVE to get rid of the stock Windows Mobile 6.5 that comes on your HD2. I never found a way around that. Until I flashed a custom ROM, it never worked 100%. To do this you need to flash HSPL to your HD2. This allows the installation of custom ROMs.
2. You have to strip Windows Mobile down to next to nothing. If you plan on using Android 2.2 as your daily operating system, you don't need it anyway. I tried lots of versions, but face it - you won't need WinMo anymore once you get Android working 100%. For this, use Chuckydroid, hands down. It is stripped down to next to nothing - no Sense 2.5, nothing fancy in Windows Mobile. BARE. BONES. Chuckydroid can also be set up to autoboot into Android!
3. After installing Chuckydroid, I also flashed Radio 2.15 just to have the latest radio. I've heard people talk against it, but again - I'm working 100%, so I'm happy.
4. For my Android ROM, I chose Mdj revolution 1.5, and updated to the S1 Linux kernel. It was one of few builds that had all features working as they should. The S1 kernel patches a lot of issues that might arise with the MDJ build.
5. Lastly, I noticed I didn't have 3G signal after all this and discovered that at some point my APN information (which tells the phone how to connect to data services) had been wiped out. I am a TMoUSA customer, so I found the information for the USA servers and added it manually to the phone. (System/Wireless & Networks/Mobile Networks/Access Point Names)
I know this isn't every piece of information you need, but if you read each point and investigate on your own, you'll find there's a wealth of information out there to guide you through each step, but to clarify :
1. Flash HSPL (I used HSPL 3, but follow the directions when you find it)
2. Install Chuckydroid (No other custom ROM worked and I tried them all)
3. Flash Radio 2.15
4. MDJ Revolution 1.5 w/ S1 kernel (Most stable and complete I could find)
5. Manually configure APN
Again I'll close with the fact that I have a fully-working Android 2.2 HD2 device. All features, all functions, no errors, no robot voice, no SOD, no gremlins... It just works. Good luck! If you have any additions to this plan, let me know! I'd like to know that I was using the newest 100% WORKING(!!!) Android built with all the best features.
I'd also like to add that, given my luck, now that it's taken me over a week to get Android 2.2 working flawlessly on my HD2, in the next day or so we'll see one of four things :
1. A flashable Android 2.2 ROM that completely replaces WinMo as the Operating system
2. A flashable Android 2.3 (3.0) Gingerbread ROM
3. A flashable Windows Phone 7 ROM

before 1,2,3,4 you can also try:
0. replace kernel with s2 also made by mdeejay. they say it's very good
thinking better i don't belive this thread belong to this section

Well I tried a lot of these "quick shortcuts" to make things work and nothing did. Believe me, I've been down every road to make this happen...
and yeah I guess I put this in the wrong section now that I look at it. Sorry!
Yep, this thread have to be moved into the Android General Discussions section.
Just let me know if you have a constantly data transfer on on your "working-like-charm" Leo and I'll immediately flash ChuckyROM (which version?), 'cause I've tried EVERYTHING, my battery lasts 3,5/4 hours running Android and I have to recharge it twice everyday...

try this combo:
- wm - energy nov 8 21684 cht 1.8.5
- radio - 2.15
- android - mdeejay revolution 1.5
- kernel - mdeejay s2
i have only 6% battery drop over 9 hours of standby, all data transfers closed and gsm only, not 3g
all things i tested works flawless
i think you missed the most important thing...
--> hard format your SD card before trying
Camillo
Format or not the SD makes non differences, I have huge battery drain in every situation.
I've had several issues running mdeejay builds, so I prefer FroyoStone 3.2 by Darkstone. I've never tried Chucky ROMs before, so I'd like to flash the brand new one
@camillo
no i didn't forget format card. i just don't do that, formatted first time and never again since then
@vysus
do whatever you want. i just suggested a combo that works very well for me

You're welcome
Unfortunately, NRG ROMs and PPP builds are not suitables for italian providers: using the first ones I had battery drain, trying the seconds I have had continuos data drops, missed calls & SMS, HUGE and nearly incredible battery drain.
I still would like to know which version of Chucky fits better with android, it's the last chance, after that I prefer to let go...
i think an correctly configured setcpu is the most important fact for battery life.
my combo:
winmob:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793814
radio: 2.12.50
Droid: hyperdroid 1.7 (nexusHD2 since yesterday cuz of new harastin kernel)
sdcard: transcent class6 sdhc
battery drain without setcpu (overnight, 8h): 40%
with : 3%
TBH I have found no difference between a fully featured winmo rom (laurentius V4 or Energy nov 8th) versus Ozdroid which was stripped down.
I have found that of course the kernel makes the most difference - currently on S2 and it seems rather peachy.
As for battery drain I have found that it is fine even without setcpu on this kernel - however - once in a while, especially at the end of the day, the battery drains super fast - I believe there is an errant process or data transfer that messes it up (perhaps whatsapp?).
I stillhowever have PPP disconnects regardless.
I haven't had one since I disabled the stock widget though.
i only have ppp disconnects if i kill all my tasks. if not, it works fine
I start off my android adventure few weeks back and now I found my treasure and have stop searching.
Here is my combination,
WM ROM: vbn clarity
Android rom: mdj froyo revolution 1.5
Kernel: mdj s2
I have tried some other build and the battery life can only last me half a day but with this combination after more than 12 hours of usage, I still have 40%. (Usage: check email every 30 mins, check xda app every 30mins, moderate web surfing, a few calls)
So for those still struggling to find the combination, you might want to try my combination. Enjoy

A different spin on Android Issues
I too was having issues with SOD, random freezing/rebooting, robot voice etc and basically gave up on having a usable version of Android working on my device.
But then I had a slight lapse in judgement and came up with another hair-brained idea... I decided to attempt to get T-Mobile to let me just switch to a different phone like the Galaxy S / G2 / or MyTouch 4G.
So I task 29'ed the phone, flashed back to the OEM rom, then removed HSPL while not at work... Over the next 2 hours I began to notice that I was having issues even on the default OEM rom.
I got curious, removed the SD card, re-installed HSPL, re-downloaded the T-Mobile Official Rom from their website, and task 29'ed the phone again, reinstalled the OEM rom, and removed HSPL again just to make sure that I hadn't just got a corrupt download or something.
Within 20 mins of loading the T-Mobile rom back on the phone, my phone randomly rebooted itself. Later while I was in the middle of a phone call the phone just made a weird buzzing sound and froze. The buzzing sound would not go away until I removed the battery and restarted. I was also having many of the issues I was seeing in all of the Android builds that I had tried like the screen taking forever to come back on after being locked, the screen being non-responsive etc...
I had attributed all of these problems to the Android roms I was using and Android not being 100% and stil too buggy for the HD2 when it actually was a problem with the device itself.
I went to T-Mobile last night and they are sending me a new phone (probably a refurb) by the beginning of next week. I'm hoping that the new device will clear up all of the issues.
Just thought I would share my experiences, maybe some of you that are having issues with the Android builds could actually just have a bad device like I did...

Followed your suggest, flashed latest Chucky GTX, did anything else, switched to Android, unplugghed my phone at 2.30 PM, some calls and SMS, few calls received, battery is 42%, over 10% per hour that turns to 12 and over using the device, now I'm hopeless

Uhhh... what? It depends on what you have running I guess. Mine seems to be running fine. Off the charger for about 3 hours and only down to 90%.
Since I've just had my HD2's screen replaced, I'm still on the stock ROM from when I got the phone back from HTC. I just popped my SD card back in and off I went. The stock ROM works perfectly with Android for me. The radio is the one they installed (see sig).
I'm not sure that WM ROM has that much effect tbh. With the ppp wrapper patched and running the S2 kernal from MDJ, I managed a 320 mile trip with Google Navigate running the entire time. I never had a single data drop or problem with the phone. I was connected to my car stereo via bluetooth too.

HD2 Overheating and rebooting

I would just like to know if you experts here at XDA know a solution to this. I am using the UnOff 3.0 ROM, I seriously have next to almost no apps installed, but I do have the last version of Android that Darkstone created (3.2 I believe), HSPL 3.0 and I have installed Hastarin to overclock my phone. My phone just keeps overheating and rebooting, I can't use my phone to use apps or watching videos.
I am willing to delete every file on my SD card and phone memory to fix this problem, but this is obviously my last option.
Please help me XDA, and I am very sorry if this similar situation has been solved here before, if so, please link me.
help me please
This is a known problem with the HD2 and I was suffering this during summer time when using it as navi in my car
When batt-temp rises over some 46 °C and in cahrging cradle lights start to blink orange-green and not charging any more, when temp rises further HD 2 freezes and/or reboots.
Gets worse when android runs
No solution to this yet.
It started on my HD2 (ex) last month. Came from nowhere, did not install anything or made any changes, no drops or whatsoever (in otterbox by the way) Shipped it back and got a new one (I assume refurbished)
I would recommend the same, I tried, flashing rom, clean install, (no install at all) even if you go back to factory settings, it reboots watching transformers.
Now i run wmo + android (darkstone ram edition- crazy fast) at the moment android draws 300 ma even with that no reboots at all.

i have highlighted what i think might be the problem in your quote above.
when overclocked, the device will generally shutdown/reboot when the CPU is mildly stressed if the CPU can't handle the voltage/frequency combination. running your CPU overclocked to the edge of stability CAN damage your hardware. usually, removing the overclocking makes the system stable again, unless some sub system has been damaged, perhaps due to prior overclocking.
see if any of the above might have happened with you. sounds plausible...
You do know what "overclocking" means, right OP?
same problem with my mates phone it was overheating and rebooting by itself.it was a hardware problem, because its under guarantee for 12 months he send it to tmobile in uk.and they send it to htc, they changed the hardware.the only reason i know they changed the hardware because his phone was unlocked and had a different i.m.e.i number.when the phone came back it was locked also.only hardware problems has 12 months guarantee.if your phone is less then a year try this, they fix it for nothing.its htc guaranteed.
make sure you flash back the original rom and get the hspl out.if they find out they wont fix it,and charge you money to send the phone back to you.
shame this is happened,i hope you sort it out a.s.a.p

Elelinux-7.1.0 Hero-v2.x Android 2.3.4 experiences

Hi All!
I'm new to XDA Developers forum, so I must post in this thread as I don't have 10 posts to write in Development section.
So, I'm Gabor from Hungary, I have my Hero about 1.5 years. I bought it from T-Mobile as a G2 Touch. It got a touch panel replacement in warranty 2 months ago, and after that I put my first custom ROM on it.
I read all the ROM pages in development and I found, Elelinux Hero 7.1.0 series the most relevant in Android reputation, so I put 2.4 on my phone. That was so good compared to original 2.1 from HTC, so I kept it and upgraded as new versions showed up.
After some hard hours I finally installed the ROM. G2 Touch protects itself from flashig and then protects recovery from replacing. This confused me a little, but in the rooting thread there is all the information I needed to overcome, but it took some time to understand for me
To prepare the installation, first time I did a full wipe as stated on first and 2nd posts, and did cache&Davlik wipe on upgrades. There are no problems with this method, I never had any issue that require an another full wipe.
While I used 2.8 I repartitioned my SD card to have swap and ext2 for APP2SD. The ROM found both and used it without other interaction.
As 2.9 arrived I updated again. I'm amazed how different this version from old ones. It booted much faster for the first time. It has fully working bluetooth, now I can use it with my car's hardsfree (older verions - includung original 2.1 - disconnected after 1-2 minutes, or not connected at all).
It also has fully working GPS, I ran "GPS Status" half an hour and used iGo navigation for another half without any FCs or reboot.
v2.9 feels faster than older versions and I don't have any compatibility issues with the apps I use. I not backed up and of course not resrtored any apps when updates done, everíthing worked without a touch.
Of course I made Nandroid backups and MyBackup Pro data backups on updates, but I never needed those because I don'T have any errors.
The Market and Home button worked for me all the time, no problems.
As I using my phone day by day, I will write my experiences in the future here.
Thank you for your attention. Sorry for this long post if it's confusing and for my poor English.
Update 1: What I didn't wrote first time, I use Compcache at 18%, made a swap partition on SD (32MB) and I think system uses it (I don't know how to check that). I set CPU to 352/652 ONDEMAND. My battery life good, it only drops to 50-60% from morning to bedtime. 3G/HSDPA data connection always on, wifi on when screen on, sync on all time (contacts, calendar, tasks, Nagroid). Phone calls about 30-60 mins a day, some e-mail traffic, no music or video play, no games, no web browsing (I rarely use these on a phone). I use Go Launcher EX instead of original launcher is it matters. Lag is there, but it comes from hardware limitation I think. Original HTC 2.1 ROM was much laggy (that was with Sense, what I not need anymore), as 2.6 and 2.8 was laggy for me (compared to 2.9).
The most important I left out is to say many thanks to Elelinux for his great work!
ive tried almost everyone of elelinux`s roms.
my question is.
IS V2.9 that much better than V2.8.
ive yet to try it but from your post it sounds better.
is it worth holding out for V3.0
Definetly yes.
I've not played with the ROM (any of, not only 2.9) too much. I did flash it, and I use as normal every day, what the phone made for. No extra testing, no extra applications, no extra load.
But I found that v2.9 much smoother for me than previous versions were.
After all, I think there are no reasons not to flash the newer version. There are no risks on updating (to my mind), so I suggest you to test it yourself. On any problems previous version can be restored from Nandroid backup.
Hi, also new here at xda so can also post only outside dev section..
Regarding subject ROM I would definitely flash 2.9. , runs much smoother and faster on my Hero than 2.8. Also, if 3.0. is indeed out soon it's not that hard to flash another.
i have no updated to 2.9.
its awesome
much smoother and more stable and 2.8
well worth flashing it.

Should i convert from WIN6.5 to Android ?

Hello all,
Firstly a big thank you to all on this site for offering such a fantastic platform to rebuild our priced gadgets to something which is more user friendly...
I aint no techie but in the past have used this site to upgrade the ROM/RADIO for my HTC HD2 phone as was constantly facing a drop in signal and the phone booting up etc...
My current details are as listed below:
OS 5.2.21913(21913.5.0.94)
Manila version 2.5.20181527.1
Rom version 3.14.161.3 (04666) WWE
Rom date 15Dec 2010
Radio version 2.15.50.14
Protocol version 15.42.50.11U
some of my queries:
- I am thinking of converting this to a complete Android OS... Is this possible on the above specs ?
- Is the benefit with Android only to do with additional applications available in the MARKET (WIN6.5 hardly has any and most are charged!) or will i get a better connectivity/signal strength and a better battery life ?
- I noticed on a few forums about a dual boot with Android on the SD card but am not keen on booting the phone every now and then.. would rather stick to one - Android or W6.5
- I do have a problem with the phone sometimes while browsing with Opera or IE. The phone heats up a lot and then just shuts off or the screen freezes and I need to open the battery slot, get the battery out, reinsert and then start the phone all over again. Its quiet sad thing and yet I love the damn phone!
I apologize in advance in case if I have posted this wrongly in this forum. Kindly point me to the right direction, as always...
Cheers!
HTC fan from India
Do it, there is a tool that can do it for you without much hassle, nice simple gui. I would suggest doing the nand android method instead of booting from sd.

- Is the benefit with Android only to do with additional applications available in the MARKET (WIN6.5 hardly has any and most are charged!)

Its quiet sad thing and yet I love the damn phone!

oh dear, that doesn't sound good, I'd suspect overheating leading to hardware faults. As an example I can browse and listen to music all day long with very little temperature change. Winmo or android.
I apologize in advance in case if I have posted this wrongly in this forum. Kindly point me to the right direction, as always...
Cheers!

Summary,,, if you want to change, change, if you don't, don't. Android wont make the phone "better" but it will give you new stuff to play with.
That being said I'd be wary of too much flashing since it sounds like you have possible hardware problems on the horizon,,be a shame to get stuck in an unflashable state.
hello guys... thank you both for your encouragement... would rather flash the phone and play around with something new instead of letting it die a natural death...
Whats the latest version of the NAND ANDROID that you guys recommend ? ne links on it with a detailed description...step by step... i aint a techie remember..
thanks for the views and responses...
Cheers!
I had the same dilemma a few days ago, ended up putting on the NAND rom of android and it obviously a lot better to play around with than winmo but the battery life is not as good as with winmo on. Still lasts a couple of days on standby with a little bit of use.
The rom I would reccommend is the one I flashed, Typhoon cyanogen mod 7 without sense but every thing works perfectly on it so far.
Here's a link to it : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933951
Once you have installed it set the cpu with SetCpu app to about 800 mhz and it works fine without getting overly hot.

Also, by tweaking the CPU VDD levels you will provide to keep your phone colder and squeeze some more juice from the battery: you can find all the instructions on the first page of Tyween's thread (the link above).
hi there... thanks both for your response... is the version provided in your message the latest files/version that is available for download or are there any other versions to look around for ?
Before flashing I plan to save my contacts with msn mobile... it saves my contacts and sms's... will i be able to recover it in the same format after i upload android ?
noticed on some forums that gsensor is a problem... does it impact the functioning so much on android ?
One of you mentioned 'sense' will not work on android... does that mean the seamless touch that is there on w6.5 will no longer be applicable...
requesting all this information just to be double sure b4 going ahead with something major like this...
are there any video tutorials on this ? the link as so many sublinks... i am thoroughly confused...
thanks in advance for your response...
The version of android is 2.3.5, the latest version at the moment I think.
The G sensor works fine on mine I have been playing games which use the sensor.
The phone touch will work fine its just you won't have the htc customization of clocks etc.
I'm not sure about saving contacts but if you could somehow save the contacts with a Google account it would be straight forward getting them onto android.
So to sum up everything seems to work fine as it would on Android though the battery doesn't last as long, but it still lasts a considerable time for a smartphone.
If you follow the link for the Rom I posted, in there, there is a instruction document made by someone which is very easy to follow. Just follow it step by step and you should be just fine.
PS make sure you backup anything you require before starting the process.
Good Afternoon
A friend of mine wants to install Android onto his device and wants me to do it for him as he doesn't want to mess it up.
Is there any sort of idiot guide to show me how to do this, I don't think it'll be easy as when I update the ROMs on my Desire HD
Also which build would one recommend, I want something he can use wiht any issues if possible.
Thanks in advance
hi ryan,
thanks for your revert mate... and clarifying about the gsensor. When you say the standard HTC application like 'clock etc' will not be there... would that take away the weather background which I so like... is there something similar available in the android market to download at a later stage (i love the weather thing HTC has to offer)...
Never tried google to synchronize my phone contacts... is it done through USB or over the air using 2G or something like that (sorry am quiet a novice with gmail!). Will it sync my sms's too... ?
I have changed my battery and no longer use the original HTC one... as it would drain out in a few hours inspite of me using the phone sparingly. I now use a chinese battery from the last few months and it lasts me a good 1.5-2days at max...
Will my service provider in India 'Loop Mobile' be able to send me the new settings that are compatible with android ? Being a weekend I don't want to loose out on contact sync in the middle of the night if the data plan is not activated again...ne suggestions would be appreciated..
There is a clock-weather app in the market which is similar to HTC sense's.
Not sure how google sync works with winmo you would have to figure that out.
About the service proivder I can't be 100% sure as my first android rom on SD didn't work straight away with T-mobile uk but this typhoon one worked straight away, but if you had setting on winmo you should be able to get it on android.

Follow the link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933951
and under install tutorials use the clean installation guide, which I used and it tells you step by step what to do, remember to download all the required files first which are all in the link.
Hi, use "SpriteMigrate" to transfer your sms from winmo to android.
I prefer Typhoon, here:

hi there... i just checked up the "spritemigrate" site and they have closed their FREE BETA application... what a shame as it seemed like the perfect solution to my problem of storing sms/contacts before flashing the phone...
any other options ?
cheers and thanks for writing in mate...
hi there again... as mentioned in my earlier posts... i have sync my phone to msn mobile and hence all my contacts and sms's are backed up every night on msn... once i move to android.. will i be able to sync the phone again just as i did with w6.5 ?
I do have a gmail account but not sure if they have the feature of storing sms's along with the contacts in google mobile. I am frustrated trying to figure out an option for contacts and sms's together.. any help would be appreciated...
cheers!
Oh Lord... I am so frustrated... spent the whole afternoon trying to figure out to save contacts and sms's online somewhere before i flash my phone but sadly no luck... just realised msn-my phone service has been deactivated and most other services are paid services...
Guess this is the only thing that is stopping me now from flashing the phone inspite of downloading most of the required files...
My last attempt - any help guys ?!?!?
thanks in advance...
Cheers!
Hi Enigma075, a little off topic but watch out with flashing in case the issues that you've described get worse. The symptoms you're describing, phone heating and screen unresponsive are exactly what happened to my HD2 recently. A week or two after it started the screen became entirely unresponsive and now HTC are (hopefully) fixing it.
Have a search on google, a few other people have encountered this as well.
I recommend trying SD first.
Note that some users reported NAND android to cause bad blocks in the NAND. so if anything bad happens, you might not be able to flash windows again. Read a lot about specific NAND build before you try them.
SD builds cause bad blocks on SD card, which is easily repairable. on NAND, it's not easy, if possible.
hello Dr. Move & Wsummers,
thank you both for responding to my post. I guess I would go in for the SD first as its getting extremely frustrating to save my contacts somewhere and then put it back again on NAND plus the tension of bricking the phone completely...
Are you able to advise me on the latest link on the SD version ? Have a few questions on this method:
- Will the phone become slow in terms of usage ?
- Will I have to reload the contacts again when i boot it to the sd android mode ?
- Whats the battery response like ?
Thanks again for your insights...
Cheers!
you can use titanium backup to backup your contacts, it'll save you quite sometime. alternatively, you can export your contacts to your SD and reload them again on the SD version.
Newer SD build are quite fast in terms of usage, not as fast as the NAND, but the difference is barely noticeable.. but that depends on how you use your device. Note that some games may not work on certain SD versions.
You can try the two versions in my sig, I've tried both for more than a month, and they're quite stable.
Battery consumption in standby is low in new builds, I get around 7 mA/h when the phone is on and 3 mA/h on airplane mode. some people experience even lower values. it depends more on your SD, and the network coverage.
in hourly terms, you'll lose ~1% per hour, and ~1% every two hours on airplane mode.
if you have any problems regarding the SD version, you can check my troubleshooter (in my sig), or ask me directly
