Hello everyone,
I have just ordered one of the Dev phones and am anxious to start playing with it.
I had a question that I thought some people here might have some experience with. I do currently have T-mobile as my cell provider. I planned on just putting the sim from my old phone into the new to transfer over my service (I would like to use the phone while I play with it). I started thinking about this after browsing around the forums and I had a few questions.
I was wondering what T-mobile actually does/adds to the firmware before they push it out to the G1 phones.
I figure someone here has T-mobile service and a dev phone so I was also curious what T-mobile "features" might be missing or might they try to block? What about that Favorite 5 plan, I am sure they have to add their own code to the firmware to allow it to support that, so I am guessing that option is already out of the question.
Aside from the unlocked part of the phone is the firmware on the dev phone any different than what comes standard on the G1 (I guess minus the T-mobile parts)
Well this is my first post and I wanted to thank everyone for their time
The set of applications that are included on the ADP1 out of the box are similar to the set of apps provided on the UK version of the G1. In particular, it's missing such goodies as the Voice Dialer, the Amazon MP3 store, and the MyFaves software. Additionally only the gtalk provider is supported in the IM app.
From http://www.gotontheinter.net/content/android-developer-phone-1
If you want the Amazon MP3 Store you can extract it from any G1 update file. If you want the Voice Dialer, extract it from JesusFreke's modified ADP1 build, or just install his modified build.
This one is more for web developers:
Android has always been a little weird about web fonts included via CSS - the "bulletproof smiley" method used to get them to work with IE, for example, broke Android. Still, I had a custom set of Picos fonts working fine on my 3.0.1 Xoom.
Then I updated to 3.1 and web fonts won't load, no matter what I do or try. None of the "hacks" used for older versions of Android work either. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone still have a 3.0.1 Xoom they'd be willing to test a web page with for me?
Hello folks,
My father-in-law showed up to visit with an Acer A501 in hand. He was challenged in getting it to work according to his needs, so I offered to take a look...
His "needs":
Google Voice via WiFi for "telephone" operations
Skype video conferencing (with front-facing cam)
Light Email usage
Netflix / Pandora
I was baffled that:
Google Voice (and various other things I expected to see) were missing from Market
Skype installed, but without video support from either cam
Netflix didn't show up in the Market either...
Bluetooth paired to a Plantronics Voyager Pro headset, but wouldn't see the Headset or Handsfree profiles offered by the device... WTF?
...the internal mic seemed nearly-worthless at first use
BTW, shortly after connecting it to WiFi, the Acer proposed downloading an update (v4.0.something - about ~370MB). The WiFi kept dropping and I had to set it to never disconnect to the update.
Unfortunately, the update didn't address any of the issues above. I suspect these are by brain-dead-design, rather than any inherent limitations of the hardware or of Honeycomb, but finding out what's up with this is why I'm posting here... I did search a bit and browse this Acer forum, but I confess to running out of time and I apologize for missing the answers if they're up here.
So, what's up with all this? Will I be able to work-around these things with a custom ROM sans Acer-or-Google-imposed limitations?
Thanks!

These limitations aren't either Google's nor Acer's design. It's Skype who has decided not to support video, it's part of this marketing campaign in the US where only a select carriers' phones will get videocalling in Skype. Similarly, Netflix is doing exactly the same thing, that's why it's only designed to work on a selected set of devices.
Apparently Netflix can be made to work on A500 though, haven't seen anyone being successful with regards to Skype.
Well
No Skype support for video calls. This is due to Skype, not Acer.
Netflix has not added support for the a500 yet - but we have a work around that enables it and allows you to watch video - you will need to root your Iconia first, however.
Netflix patch for Iconica : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116393&page=5
root for Iconia (assuming your ota update gave you 3.1): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228
Pandora should work just fine with no Modding.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the answers. I gathered that about Skype - lack of video being their choice and treating the tab like a simple smart phone...
My suspicions of "by-design limitations" were bolstered by the elusiveness of Google Voice (I did find the posts about getting that working , and the annoying fact that with default browser settings the tablet is seen as a mobile phone and gets limited page views... Why GV doesn't show in the Market, after all this time (I saw some rather old posts about this and other Honeycomb tabs), still has me wondering.
Thanks again.

In your browser, click the icon in the top right corner, select "settings" then "advanced" and you can change the view mode from mobile to desktop. Also most mobile sites will have a link to switch the session from mobile to full.
Welcome! Glad to help always.

Hi,
My NC is currently running stock 1.3 after rooting with ManualNooter.
Problem is that it wont display Hebrew fonts while web browsing (all I see is squares).
I found some guides on that, but not really sure which one I should use, since they usually dont say for which version theyre for and what exact fonts are used for web browsing.
How do I change fonts for web browsing?
Also, is there another way to use the barnes and noble software but use another rom, like CM7 (which supports hebrew)?
I have been trying for days to find a program to allow me to view my online statements on my tab. I have adobe installed and updated. I also have documents, to go pro installed and nothing seems to be working. Any help would be appreciated. I use my tab to pay bills

Too little info for anyone to be sure where you're having trouble. It sounds like you're having trouble with pdf files but it's unclear where the trouble lies. Are you able to download the pdf files to the tab with the issue being that they don't open properly, or is the issue that they don't download at all? What browser are you using? Have you tried EZpdf?
There are tens of thousands of online bill pay sites so at this point using that as your focus to get help might not yield the results that you desire. Some sites and the way they push files to you may simply not be compatible with our devices or the browser you are using.
