[Q] how do i install 3d party aps on the samsung focus - Focus General

is there a way , other than market place to install apps on the samsung focus with wp7. Im an avid win movile 6.5 + fan and am very new to wp7 . I dont like the aps there and see there are several coming out on here.

You can either pay Microsoft ($99/yr) for a Dev license that can dev unlock up to 5 phones or use Chevron unlock to jailbreak your phone.
Since majority of the WP7s will still be locked, I don't see any trend for ppl to publish apps outside of App Market. Sure, you can find a few tweeks out there, but that's about it. A secondary app market probably will never happen.

WM Marketplace on Xperia?

Hi all,
I've heard a lot about Microsoft setting up WM Marketplace this summer. My main question is:
1. Does anyone know if this will be accessible on the SE Xperia?
From what i've read, the Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 have been mentioned. Is this only going to be accessible through WM 6.5?
2. What does everyone think about the WM Marketplace?
I think it's been a long time coming, but maybe its too little too late. I've hated the iPhone since it came out but after spending a week with my uncles iPhone i've grown envious of the applications which are on the market for it. Its maybe not the most configurable or indepth phone but there are so many great and useful applications out there for the iPhone. Eventhough WM has been around for so many more years and there are more applications out there for WM, I think it sucks that WM have taken so long to move forward with applications and finally the UI (WM6.5). There are lots of sites from which you can buy WM applications but why are the quality of the programs the same which we saw 3 or 4 years ago - extremely bad. When you are using an expensve touch screen phone like the Xperia, you want applications readily available and also user friendly. If WM had invested more time and effort into getting developers involved then the iPhone would be nothing today. I just feel my X1 is going to waste without the applications which would really utilize the hardware of the Xperia!
3. What do you think about the pricing of applications in the WM Marketplace?
Currently lots of apps for WM cost stupid prices, upto £20 a pop! I think approaching this again like Apple would be to provide free limited versions of the application and charge you £2 or £3 for the full version. This would mean more people would be willing to try out different apps.
Anyways sorry for the long post!
I love forward to reading your replies!

1. I heard that the WM Marketplace would be compatible with WM 6.1+ devices. It's just a link to a website? I'm not to sure.
2/3. Personally I think it's a good idea. I never ever understood why cell phone applications should cost $10+. Some cost $20+, which I would never pay for. I feel like if more developers can market their applications to wider audience via the WM Marketplace, this would drive down the cost of applications.
After browsing the website, it looks like most of the items are sold via Handango which is already on our Xperia's. I hope the marketplace will catch on, but I doubt it.
I personally think that Marketplace will catch on for WM users.
You see so many adverts for the apps on the iPhone and i'm sure theres loads of people like me who would like to see some of those apps bought to WM.
It's a case of Microsoft encouraging developers to start making these apps by making a centralised Marketplace where they can sell their ideas.
But is it too little too late?
It is "built-in" in Itje´s 6.5 and is just a shortcut to https://client.marketplace.windowsmobile.com which is not ready.
I think that wm will change a lot with the new market , but im agree with your opinion , maybe the important changes comes to late . ive read that wm will include much iphoneapps in their market and that the market will available for wm6.0 and 6.1 devices too but i think that it also will be possible to upgrade your x1 up to 6.5 . so i can wait , i have to wait -.-
I REALLY hope that wind mobile 6.5 does come to the XPERIA
Is it possible to run iPhone apps on WM? maybe they will bring "iPhone style" apps, but its always going to be perceived as Microsoft copying Apple once again!
Is it possible to eventually run iPhone apps on WM? Through an emulator or other software?

WM Marketplace doesn't require WM6.5.
I am pretty satisfied with the current development scene but I think the WMMP will spur a new "age" and I really hope it does.
Microsoft is known for being sloppy though.

Typical micro$oft !!!??? poor app selection ...

today a friend of mine bought his new Htc hero into work and showed me all the brilliant FREE apps available on his android (google) based phone ..... and dont even get me started on the 90,000 odd iphone apps available to iphone users. so i went off and looked on the M$ marketplace on my HD2 .......what did i find ...bugger all and they even have the cheek to charge £6 odd for crappy old games like pacman !!!!!!!!!!!
Errr... yeah, where shall I start?
Okay, first of all: There are currently about 30,000 applications for WM available. That's twice as many as you find for Android.
I also estimate that 80% of all apps available for the iPhone are useless. If only 33% of the WM apps are useless, that means you get the same amount of useful applications for WM as you get for the iPhone.
Secondly: Marketplace has opened only two months ago. Sure, there should be more applications in there, considering the 30,000 applications that are available for WM outside the Marketplace. But other application stores have opened with even less apps available.
Nothing stops you from getting your applications from other sources, outside the Marketplace. There are also lots of FREE apps available for Windows Mobile, just look at what people are doind in this forum.
In fact, it's an advantage for us that Microsoft doesn't limit distribution of applications to their marketplace like Apple and Google do. This way, we and the developers have more freedom and applications are not banned (like Google Voice for the iPhone, to name one famous example - but there are hundreds).
So, in this sense, Microsoft is BETTER than Apple and Google.
EDIT: Please change your thread title to something useful (i.e. one should see from the title what the thread is about).
Who cares about Marketplace? As maati said, there's plenty of other places to get applications from.
i just think m$ are missing out on making their platform content rich.... i know most of the apps are useless but some are fun and the games are good....i was only stating a simple observation. everyone on the forum seems so darn serious !!!
And I gave you the actual reason for your observation
I also had hoped for more apps available from the beginning, but the number will grow for sure. I don't think that Android had 800 applications after only two months, did it?
And you don't have to rely on Marketplace, so there's nothing wrong...
...okay, there is something wrong, but that's another story: The 800 apps are only in the US, every country gets its own Marketplace and that's really a stupid thing. Well, let's hope they fix that - if you want to have a look at the US American Marketplace, then there's a 'hack' for you - just search the forum for it.
Thread closed: OP is uninformed.
Windows Mobile exist for a decade, plenty of apps available outside the brand new marketplace.
The marketplace still has several issues, non the least the protection scheme issue. (which allows a cracker to crack ALL programs in one go with a small bit of universal code)
This is why some developers are hesitant to publish on the marketplace.

Contact microsoft about Hd2/Wp7

I love my HD2, as does every one else in this forum after all, that's why we are all here. I mean i have a phone which within 30 minutes i can have any one of 4 different operating systems and each one with lots of lovely flavours. what's not to like?
This is the kind of customer i am; i like choice.
This type of customer knows how to install new phones and install custom firmwares. Thing is that this type of customer, i.e. Me, is also a prolific spender of online goods and services. I pay for a web host and remote file storage. i pay for my online music (though mine is very specialised so not from itunes!) and movies. i spend a small fortune on Xbox live arcade and PSN.
I am also a developer and write Visual basic, linq and oracle SQL apps for my employer as well as for my self.
Now here comes the problem. I have a HD2 and i have a choice of android, Wp 6.5 and Wp7 (we will leave out windows 98 as thats not much use on the phone for daily use). If i install Win 6.5 my phone is dead, no nice apps and a clunky interface. If i install android i get a fully functioning phone with access to the market place and i have already spent quite a bit in there on apps and games for an OS that i may not even use in future. If i install WP7 i get the basics but microsoft actually STOP me from giving them money and buying apps and games.
This seems daft in 3 ways
1) i want to buy apps and games but they are stopping me from giving them money
2) I can get the games via pirate methods but as a software writer, thats not the game i am in; fair program = fair payment.
3) i am due to upgrade in 3-4 months and at that time i have to decide whether i stick with my HD2 or upgrade to an android phone or a Win 7 phone; if i have invested all my money in android and begun developing on that handset then i will not buy a WP7 device, no matter what comes in the next update.
Way i look at it microsoft are being silly about this, android do not limit what i can purchase from their marketplace, legit phone or not.
Now in times of old, microsoft could ignore us as we make up 0.5% of the customer base and, with pirating, make up 0% of the companies income. But times change and now we are a resource, Modern phones generate income well after they have been sold via downloads and as a developer of (admittedly basic) apps i am some one microsoft might want on board. Microsoft is going to drive a significant wedge of its customer base away (aside from the horror stories i have heard regarding app submission, 1+ month for a revision?) and once the slide starts towards android, microsoft will not be able to stop it.
Now i cannot ring up microsoft and start to ask for codes and give in fake details as that is not who i am and my hotmail account is my developer account. On the other hand i have a little money and i am happy to purchase a licence for this phone from microsoft or HTC to enable WP7 on this device, but how do we get them to do this? plus windows phone 7 is hacked onto the HD2, deal with it or lose that whole segment of customers.
Way i see it if i prepare a carefully constructed letter and email it to them and i get the YTS kid, nothing is going to happen. If on the other hand we know some one higher up who can look at this then i`m happy to discuss with them.
Now i know this will do nothing and i know microsoft will just say `buy a new phone` or 'Its down to HTC' but i am not looking to pirate the phone i am looking to be legitimate. If they only want to drive me to pirate stuff to test the phone and develop for it then i`ll just choose to go with android and spend my cash there.
Well that was a bit annoying to read m8, please try and use proper paragraphs.
You have some very valid points there but I just dont think that M$ are going to go back on what they have said and start supporting unofficial roms. If they was going to do that they would simply release an official rom which I just cant see them doing as HTC would potentially be pissed of as they would have far less people buying the HD7.
just look the forum about the problems with the shipped sd card...
unsupported device is unsupported, at the moment they dont block, so be happy it works anyway but dont expect support from ms (support is not cheap).
Microsoft gave me a key no problem. I've been buying apps on the app store no problem. They just asked me is the phone a HTC, which it is. If I were you I wouldn't bother writing a letter until they say they will be blocking HD2 running WP7.
I'll be upgrading to WP7 when the new batch of high spec WP7 comes out but for now I love running WP7 on my HD2.
As the poster above has pointed out the problem with SD cards. Can you imagine what would happen if Microsoft said the would support the HD2. Thousands of people would be complaining that there SD cards don't work which causes numerous problems with the OS. Thats just one of many other differences. The DFT has done an amazing job and I think Microsoft will leave us HD2 users alone.
If you want to learn a little bit more about the SD card problems, read the link below. It will explain alot

What? Do you think Microsoft and HTC do not read these posts? Well you have just told them all. As soon as you post anything in XDA its read by these people...

Will hd2 activations be revoked

I have a concern that Microsoft will revoke our activation codes and we will loose all our purchased apps and games.
Could this happen, do you think it could happen, or please tell me I am being paranoid and go spend some money on the marketplace?

You're being paranoid. Go spend some money in the marketplace.
Seriously, I think there are two reasons why this won't be a problem:
First, I doubt Microsoft is tracking the sort of information that would ever lead to this (I'd expect they would have to be linking our IMEI numbers to our windows live id), or if they are, I doubt they would ever bother to check that those IMEI numbers were for valid WP7 devices.
Second, your purchases are tied to your windows live id, not a particular phone. Even if they decided to somehow shut down phones that weren't using legitimate versions of WP7, I doubt they would (or legally could) take away your purchased apps (without refunding your money, at least).
Go forth and purchase!
Dingo
The activation code is needed to use Windows live services, Xbox live and Marketplace. You can still use WP7 on HD2 if you don't have an activation code (the OS still works).
Even if activations were canceled or revoked, apps and games installed on the phone would still be usable unless they specifically require access to your activated Windows Live account.
aye, what they said ^^
also, could they, potentially yes but would they? its very unlikely they would, whilst you are (hopefully) spending money on the market you are sending them money, as long as users of WP7 dont take the piss as has happened in the android development and steal as much as the can MS doesnt have an incentive to block us all. Unfortunately as WP7 gains popularity we may get flooded with freeloaders illegally downloading as much as they can get their hands on, this would kill us as MS would then have a very big incentive to lock down WP7 even more and potentially part of that could be blocking us as well.
in short, buy stuff on the market and they will be happy resulting in us beingt happy!
It was interesting to test WP7 as we did with Android. But the activation code is so embarassing that it dissuade us. So we just hope that we will have an automatic simple unlock code soon. For the moment, bye bye WP7 and welcome Android.
How is it embarrassing, just curious? It was simple & effective to get the activation code. WP7, is quite simply way better than Android, imho. To each his own, but I think if you used it, while activated, you'd be convinced to keep it. It's easy to use, effective, & so clean looking. Lmao, I sound like a commercial now, I better stop.

Switching To Windows 8 Phone

Hello... hope this finds everyone well.
I am a long time android user and keep getting the urge to jump into the windows phone arena. I was just curious from those who have done the switch what you found good and bad about the experience. Just looking for justifications from either spectrum really before doing so I appreciate all of your time and look forward to hearing your experiences.
Thanks!!

Hi, it's nice to see you're willing to make the switch.
Honestly, there are some things from Android that you're going to miss here, but there's also a bunch of new exciting stuff on WP, so in the end it all depends on your ability to adopt something new and different.
Although I don't use an Android phone as a daily device (because that place is taken by my Lumia 820), I have one for various mods and stuff, and I just find WP a better option for me (but obviously both have their advantages and disadvantages). The difference in performance and optimization is most visible on low-end hardware - WP excels there, Android not so much. There's also a difference in terms of features and customizability - all those nifty things you could change/modify/replace in Android are mostly not in WP. The hardware of WP mostly caught up to Android, so there shouldn't be any deal breakers there. The store is growing daily and now includes most "major" apps, but it really depends on you whether you'll be able to find your apps or not.
But before you decide and make opinions about WP, I urge you to wait for the 8.1 update - it brings a lot of new stuff and further refines the user experience, so it'd be wise to make judgment based on that. If you can, I suggest you get a cheap WP to have the first taste of the platform, and then decide if you want to upgrade or go back to Android.
In any case, make a decision based on your own opinion and experiences, it'll surely be the right decision for you.
I switched from my Nexus 4 to my Lumia 520 a few months ago.. one thing I noticed is the speed difference. Even though the 520 only has 512 mb of RAM, it feels more fluid than my Nexus 4.
I actually just made the switch.
From a Nexus 4 to a Lumia 925
Its been about a week, so far not regretting it at all. I managed to find all but i think 3 apps or so that i used on android in the WP store. One thing you will notice, some apps dont have all the functionality as they do on android.
What i do notice about WP is that everything is much more fluid. Tasks are easier and quicker to do. Also, in a lot of cases some of the apps on WP are generally nicer than you'll find elsewhere. I am really glad i made the switch. My main reason for switching was because i was just bored with my Nexus, wanted something different.
The only thing that its really missing at the moment is a google music app, i noticed like the day i got my WP, google changed the api or something in google music with borked all the gmusic apps on the windows store. But in everyday use, i dont miss it much. I just use pandora.
Give it a try, people hate on the apps and selection (i did too at one point) but WP has a great selection and some of the apps are absolutely beautiful.
Many people have a go at WP without ever trying it so well done to the OP for this thread.
I have had 10 Android phones and 4 tablets in the past 4 or so years. I think Android is a fantastic OS, easily the most powerful, feature rich and customisable available. In January I was contemplating swapping my N4 for a N5. However looking around at the fact that Android is so popular now I thought about trying WP8. So I got a brand new Ativ S for £140. The plan was to run two phones for a bit. The thing was I never looked at my N4. I know the lack some Google services is a problem but I have music, email & calendar one way or another so I can still interact with my Android family members.
The biggest let down in WP8 is the browser. IE is …. erm not very good. It needs text reflow (but so does Chrome) as a start but in reality MS need to open the platform to allow other browsers to run their own engines.
My advice is to see how tied in you are to Google and Android apps and see if any are missing on WP8. If the missing ones are vital to you then maybe WP8 isn’t for you.
I am now waiting for the new set hardware coming later in the year. I will then decide whether to get a new WP device or go back to android.

Luckily, IE is getting several improvements in 8.1, so it'll be a more viable option for people. The thing that's missing the most IMO is password management. Every decent browser should have it...

Yeah, if you're heavily tied into Google's ecosystem, you may need to reconsider your choice. Not that support for Google's products and services totally sucks, but it's quite lacking compared to what it could be (mostly Google's fault). But the good thing is, if you manage to make the switch to Microsoft's services, they've got you covered.
Me too.. my final android phone was the Xperia z (for a few days).. i just got bored of Android, wanted something different... i may get the LG G Pro 2 when it comes to the Market as a second phone, but my Nokia 1520 is not going anywhere in the near Future.

Depends on how you define "free". There's free and trial versions of apps available on WP as well. There's only one store for WP, but you don't really need 10 app stores just to get your apps, do you? But if you're talking about piracy, you're out of luck.

I mean is the system accessible like android? In android I can download and install apps from other sources like app sites.
Do WP has a similar system?
As I said, no, and doesn't really need one because quality apps are found in the store. The only other source of apps are homemade apps, but you need dev unlock for that.

It`s free. And @reker says you`re free to install 10 apps now (was 2 for free unlock).
