all,
since this morning I'm the proud owner of a HTC 7 trophy. After some hassle to get my personal exchange certificate on the device, I have the following annoying effect - exchanges looses its password - uncrecoverable unless reseupt of email account on the device.
I set up the exchange connection correctly with the "advanced option" etc - everything runs smoothly, mail sync, calender sync, contacts etc...
however, after each sms, call or whatever, it seems the connection is lost by some means and I get the error "exchange password incorrect" and I'm prompted to re-provide my password. Entering the password does not solve the issue (I keep on getting prompted for the password), only removing the email account on the phone and resetup helps, till the next "interupt" of a sms or a call. Very annoying.
Anyone experienced this and knows a solution?
thx

Sounds like certificate issue to me.
A colleague of mine had almost same problem as you on his laptop. After every restart of his laptop he had to enter password. I gave him proper certificate and his Exchange problems gone.
So, first check your certificate.
There is another possibility. I can access my exchange server using two different addresses, but only one of them is covered by my certificate. I need to use the one from certificate.
If you are sure that your certificate is good, check if your server address match your certificate.
thx, any idea of what the certificate issue could be? (so I can try to give some more dierection to the exchange guys here?)
(I'm using the certificate generead for my login and server name is correct)
Strange is though that on my P3300 (WM6.1) with the same certificate, it works like a breeze...

That sounds very strange. Now I am confused.

How does your Exchange account tile looks like?
Like Outlook or Google mail tile?
The exchange account looks like your outlook tile...
In the mean time I use my WM6.1 device again and I noticed that indeed there I had te re-enter my exchange password again as well after reboot (so not after each interupt) which is then nicely accepted by exchange...
My trophy is back in the box until I have a solution - little disappointment...

Exchange tile should look as Outlook tile, that's good.
Asking for password after reboot on WM6.1 - NOT GOOD! If it happens every time after reboot, than you have certificate problem or server address you use is not covered by your certificate. You have same problem on both devices, but because the way WM6.1 works you do not see a problem as often as on WP7 device.
Copy your certificate file on your PC. Double click that file and certmgr will open. You will see Certificates - Current User, and a folder with name of the file you just double clicked. Open that folder and you will see Certificates folder inside. Open Certificates folder and you should see what is in your certificate file.
In Issued To you should see name of your server, for example exchange.yourcompany.com
In Intended Purposes you should see Server Autentification
Also check Expiration Date.
To have VALID certificate, you need to see exact address that you use and date should be some date in the future.
Hope this will help to resolve your certificate issue.
btw. that is not my phone in the picture (that's not trophy after all), I just wanted to be sure that your account is set up as Outlook (because it should be that way).
mmm, thx for the tip...
what I see is that the certificate is not issued to the server, but to my userid and the intend is "proves your identity to a remote computer"
my I do need to install the corporte root certificate as well..

You need the one that says "Ensures the identity of a remote computer", and that one is for your server.
I only have the one I mentioned above, the corporate root certificate is for the correct policy.
I wondering though what the differnce is between "proves your identity to a remote computer" and "ensures the identity of a remote computer"
any message i could give to the tech guys over here?

Those two certificates do opposite things.
The one you have is to assure your server that you have right to use that user and password, something like: "yes he is the one he is telling you he is".
Another one (the one I have) is to assure that your server is the server that should receive your user and password, something like: "yes that is the right exchange server, feel free to send my data to it anytime you want".
I hope it's clear now.
very clear - thx, but no clue what to do now ;-)

Open your Exchange server from browser.
https://exchange.yourserver.com (or whatever your exchange address is.
If you use Chrome, you will get red or green lock, depending of address of server that you use for that, and certificate installed on your PC. Green one preferred.
In any case, click on that lock.
Something like "The identity of this website has been verified by ..."
And you have Certificate information link, click on it.
You will see "Ensures the identity of a remote computer" in purposes.
Issued to should be address of your Exchange server. Be sure that you use that address, and not any other one to connect on your devices.
Click on detail, and then Copy to file. You will see export wizard. Click Next. Any format should do. Finish the wizard and you will have certificate on your PC.
There is no difference what you should do in case of red or green lock. Only difference is in the displayed message. In case of red lock you will see something like "The identity of this website has not been verified." That probably only means that you used some other address for server than the one that have certificate. In worst case it means that certificate is not valid.
Easiest way to transfer it on the phone is to put it on some website. I have mine on one of companies websites in password protected folder, so I can open it over IE on my mobile at anytime. Another way is to send it to your e-mail. Or do whatever you did to transfer first certificate.
Install on phone, try and let me know the results.
it's crystal clear, howevern, I have no clue what to do know .... ;-( (besides using my old artemis...)

Have you downloaded certificate from your exchange server and install it to your phone?
If you do not understand my previous post (with details how to get your certificate), you have 3 choices:
1. You can ask someone to help you to follow the steps I explained in my previous post.
2. You can ask your IT to give you certificate that will assure identity of your exchange website.
3. You can send me PM with external address of your exchange server, and I will download certificate and send it to you.
thx!
I spoke to they IT guys - they acknowledge the issue.... and will work on it.
i installed the certifacte via the procedure i've been told... (adn again on my other device it works like a breeze...)

My company runs an exchange server that i can connect to via SLL on the web. However, I always got an invalid certificate message. On 2003 devices on ran certchk and i could synschronize my mail, calender and contacts.
Now - with my JJ - i can not get to my mail anymore because of this invalid certificate. I does not help to download the certificate to my device, since it is invalid.
Is there any reg hack, apps or whatever i can use to overcome this?
Thx
Ronaldovic,
Try exporting the root certificate from the Certificate Authority in "DER" format, copy it to the JJ and run it. This should work as the JJ is not certificate locked.
Ferg.
I did - and when i look in settings-certificates - it shows in the list of certificate but with an enddate of somewhere in 2003 (so it is not valid).
Again, with certchk in 2003 devices it all worked flawlessly.
Are the certificates still be the problem now? Or is it something else?
When i sync, i get an error: 0x80072F17
Ah sorry, I read your mail but didn't really read it and assumed I knew what you were saying.
If you can get a reg editor for the JJ (I use something called "Mobile Registry Editor" which is a PC-based app and works through ActiveSync), change DWORD Value under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Activesync\Partners\[Secure] to 0 I gather this will do it.
On the point of the certi though, can you not get the CA to issue a new certificate to the Exch box? When connecting through SSL, ActiveSync doesn;t give you a "Yeah connect, I don't care!" dialog box as OWA does.
Ferg.
got a good reg editor, but can not find the last [secure] part...what do u mean by that? For example below ..\partners i see two entries(default) and (ServerNameChanged). and two directories with strange numbers.
About the certificate thing...if i understand u correctly i will never connect if i do not have a valid certificate?
I appreciate the help!!
YEAH!!! Great, got it working, thx to u!
I just love this forum.
Glad to hear it!
I am back....
The sync goes ok now, but every time i send a new mail, it gets send twice. In my outbox on the JJ there is one email, when i receive i see two coming in (exactly the same)
Any1?
i can get it to look like its working by turning off ssl. e.g. it says sycing 20/20 emails. However when i go to messages there are none there! Similarily contacts, tasks and calendar items appear to be syncing in active sync, but they just dont show up!
Hi,
I have run into the same problem.
Used the tips on changing the registry (for which I really thank you!!!).
However, it seemed working until I realize that my Treo 700w keeps asking for the password. No matter how many times I enter my password correctly, it just keeps asking the password over and over again. It does not save my password even if I select "save password" option.
Have you run into this problem and found any workaround?
Thanks in advance. Bo.
Boryu,
Remove and re-add the server source.
I've had this a few times and it's well annoying! This seems to do the trick though.
Ferg.
same issue
i have the same issue,
i used registry editor but its not allowing me to add the reg key!!
am i doing something wrong,, and were do i add the Secure Dword?
Why don't you just renew the certificate? Just right click the website folder within IIS 6.0 and select Properties. There is a security tab (Directory Security?) within which you can renew an existing certificate.
I had the same problem getting push email to work, and renewing the certificate fixed the problem.

Quick question .. not sure if anyone can help or not.
My Company uses Xchange email and was wondering if there was a way to get this email pushed on to the phone first. I guess the main problem is that I am not sure if the company has pop enabled. Not really even sure what the incoming mail server and outgoing mail server are or where to find this information. Asking them really isnt an option... any thoughts?
This is the first thing that i tested with my Dopod. When it asked for servers, i just put in the web address to our Outlook Web Access site.
Hard reset after about 30 mins because my server enforced a 30min lock policy and i wasnt sure if i was allowed to hook my dopod upto the exchange server (we have strict policies about attaching non approved hardware to servers and or network)
Exchange servers don't use POP or SMTP, they use Exchange. So there are no 'incoming' or 'outgoing' mail server names.
Get your Exchange server address from your internal tech support group or your system administrator and go through the email account setup on your phone. You'll find one of the options early on is "Exchange Server".
You say that asking them for this info isn't an option, but it's the only way you're going to get this information. If you know where to look on your desktop, you can check your Outlook installation for the Exchange server name there. Otherwise, you're stuck having to ask someone.
If you just simply can't ask anyone, and can't find out on your own, it's a safe bet that your company doesn't want you to do this, and someone might get upset if you try.
i guess the real question here is. If I were to install the BBconnect 4.0 software on my phone; would this then allow me to access my company email on my Tytn?. The problem is that I am trying to get my company email on my Tytn without having to go to my corporate IT department and ask for official permission as they are idiots and say I do not have a need for this. Currently certain people have blackberry's in the company which they receive there email. From my point of view I could careless what they think I have a need for or dont. So in the end I am just trying to circumvent the IT department to achieve what I need. Any thoughts on how this could be done?
- Should also be noted that I have gone into my outlook settings on my Work PC; retrieved what is listed in there as the Microsoft Exchange server address and inputed this along with my netwrok id and password into my Tytn but when you do the Sync it does not work. I have also pinged the server address and inputed the IP# and tried that way unsucessfully as well ... any thoughts?
It's a pretty involved process. You will need to know the server addresss, user name and password and additionally an SSL certificate in order to get true push email. That's unless they use a big company like Verisign to provide SSL certificates. So you might have to talk to them...
First things first though.... Find out what the name of the exchange server is. You will also need a domain name. I'm sure you know what your username and password are.

I have retrieved the domain name from going into the control panel and system icon and checked under computer name. So I know what the domain name is; I have also retrieved what is listed in the Microsoft Exchange Server address. However for some reason it still does not work; I am wondering if what is listed in the MES address field is only accessible if you are on the company internet and not an outside connection? - Thoughts?
If you retrieved that address from a computer on their internal network, than it's an "inside" address and it wont work on your phone. You need to figure out what the outside address is and it's pretty easy to do. It's usually "mail.blahblahcompanyname.com" or something like that.
Any thoughts on when the usual mail.blahblahcompanyname.com doesn't work? Any thoughts where one might find this information?
Yes. See above for my thoughts.

As mentioned by one of the posters above, the Outlook Web Access address is the best one to use to ensure that it is a valid routable host. You also mention that some of the other network users have blackberry devices. If your corporate IT guys are using Blackberry Enterprise Server, it may mean that Exchange Activesync is not enabled at the server end (or indeed that they are not using a late enough version of Exchange server) in which case, you will not be able to use it no matter what settings you have.

By Outlook Web Address; do you mean the website that you can visit to get your company email when you are away from the office?
Yes, try that address. Ours is https://blahblah.wahwah.com/exchange
If yours is also HTTPS you'll need the certificate. If it's a MAJOR provider like someone else posted, no worries, your device will handle it on its own. If it's a self-signed certificate, SOL.

Yeah I tried the web address that I login into my web mail when I am not in the office. However that does not seem to work either.
Thank you to all those who replied with useful information. Combined with the answers I received a little tinkering around; I was able to successfully accomplish what i was trying to do; which was receive company email without the involvement of the IT department.
computer misuse act
without sounding picky, you shouldnt be doing this unless you have explicit permission.
IT departments have specific policys in place to safeguard the data transmitted to mobile devices, and in this case, I doubt you know what these policies are and potentially opening up your corporate network for attack
all you have to do is call your IT department. Tell them you want to enable Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) on the server.
Once this is done, ask them for the Outlook Web Access (OWA) URL. Also, check to see if your server requires SSL or a domain (if you are unsure).
Once you're off the phone with IT, launch activesync on your ppc. press menu and choose "add server source"
enter your OWA address (without http:// or https://) and be sure to include " /exchange " without quotations at the end. press next. enter your outlook username. this is usually the same as your email before the @ symbol, however it can be different.
enter your password and then domain. ensure 'save password' is check. choose next
choose what you want to sync wirelessly , such as contacts, calendar, and task.
note: whatever you sync wirelessly will be deleted if you ever decide to stop using exchange activesycn
choose finish. the initial sync will begin. also, your company's security or it policy may force you to have a password on your phone. if so, you will be prompted during the initial sync to set up a password.
if you need any more help, let me know..
Trying to set up ActiveSync on my Telus P4000 (Titan), although the issue should be the same with an WM6.1 phone...
I can't for the life of my figure the right server settings to enter in the Configure Server section, and I have yet to find a definitive "this is how you do it" procedure for it. As near as I've been able to glean, for the "Server address" section, you give it JUST the domain name of the Exchange server, without an http:// or a /exchange or /oma or anything... correct so far? But the catch in my particular instance is that Exchange web access is on port 8080, rather than 80 or 433.
I've tried adding a :8080 to the server address, I've tried adding the http:// and/or https://, I've tried adding the /oma and /exchange to the end, and all combinations of the above, with no luck... when I go back into the settings, it's reverted to JUST the domain name. Is there somewhere else I can tell it to use a non-standard port? Registry key, maybe?
I'm not sure it works with other ports than 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS).
You just need to put your external A record in the server value.
Try using standard ports first to be sure everything is working, then switch.
Okay, well I managed to get rid of the "Cannot reach server" messages by switching back to "require SLL", and as it turns out, the server wasn't set up for SSL (it is now). So now I'm connecting, but getting certificate errors. At least I've found plenty of info about solving that issue, so on to the next step...

Yeah, did that... still not helping
Go to first new post ActiveSync config for Exchange
Exchange ActiveSync cannot access the server if SSL is set to be required. For
information about how to correctly configure Exchange virtual directory
jeen is right. Unless the certificate is issued form a Trusted Certificate Authority, you will need to import the issuing CA in the Root Certification Authority store of your Phone.
If it's a self signed cert, just export it from exchange server (without Private key) and copy it to your phone. Then, double click it from File Manager. This should be enough.
^Yeah, I did that right off the top (see my reply to jeen). Still no joy.
Perhaps Tendulkar can finish his thought...
To disable SSL requirements for Activesync service is very easy:
Win2003 (IIS6.0)
Open IIS on your cas, expand the Default Website (or the website where ASVritualDir resides) right click on Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync and choose properties.
Go to the tab Directory Security, choose EDIT under Secure Communication.
Remove flag from Require Secure Channel.
Obvsiulsy Click ok.
Win2008 (IIS7)
Open IISManager.
Navigate through site, default website, hilight Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync.
Make sure you have the features view selected (should be by default).
Choose SSL Settings.
Unflag "Remove SSL".
Obviusly click Accept.

OK lemme know.
make sure you have the same root certificate installed also. you have to trust the same certificate authority as the certificate that you have on your exchange server.
Did anyone find solution
I am having same problem. Certificate installed and tried all connection settings that can find on internet. Cannot get ActiveSync to syn with my server (same certificate error, but hosting company states tested with WM6.1 that all is working fine on their end) and also cannot get Windows Live Messenger to work, states there's a connectivity problem. Funny thing is MMS, surfing net with IE, and Google Maps with GPRS work fine. Only Microsoft network products are not working. My phone is Palm Treo Pro with WM6.1 Professional. Vodaphone version but bought in China and have since added A4 Chinese text editor, which I think could be problem, but need to hard reset phone to check. Any ideas? Better yet, any solutions?
One tip for getting this working in my case (same certificate errors) was that I had to get the certificate off the internally facing OWA server, rather than the externally facing version. Although they're both the same server, the external one goes through an IAS box which seems to be presenting its own certificate rather than the one on the exchange server. Don't ask me - I don't run the system.
As soon as I add the Internal version of the cert, Exchange, OTA Sync and ActiveSync spring into life.
People
Since last week i had sleepless nights trying to get my direct push email , Global address book working with my exchange server. I tried everywhere but there was little to go on.
Few min back i got this going and the elation has quickly changed to sharing back to the forum.
And Yes , it has to do with installing certificate on the device. I checked with my Iphone and Android owning colleagues and they can do complete MS exchange server sync inspite of getting the certificate warning but not Microsoft. It seems they are crucifying their own lot only.
So this is how it starts -
- ask your admin for the certificate or else go to the web exchange address and on the address tab click on the lock sign which is displayed. This is the certificate you would need for your device. Click on the lock and copy the certificate thumbprint ( assuming you know how to make it into a .cer file). Install this .cer on device root and install. go to security tab - certificates on the deicce and make sure the certificate is shown as installed in there.
I guess this would do the job. Hope this dope might help some of you.
Cheers!
Shailen
I picked up the focus yesterday and have run into an issue syncing with Outlook/Exchange Server 2003. I receive the error code below after the email account setup runs for a bit, I get contacts and calendar entries, then a few emails before the error is returned (everytime I try to sync later as the msg suggests). I tried finding the error code referenced on MS Support/Forums, AT&T Samsung forums, and even xda developers with no luck.
I did try a hard reset (from settings) and then recreate the account and I tried removing the hub on the start screen and then deleted the account and recreate same error every time.
Samsung Tech Support suggested that I add the same Certificate on my Server to the phone, Did so - still, no luck.
Anyone see this error/issue?

Mine has worked flawlessly. Sounds like you did everything I would have suggested except return and get a replacement phone.
I had that problem. the cause of mine was to have the SSL turned on. After I created the account, I went to setting>email and choose the outlook account, clicked on advanced, then scrolled down and uncheck the SSL checkbox. All worked perfect after that. although I guess I am not super secure.. but anyone that wants to hack and read my email.. feel free pretty boring.
It is obviously a software issue. How can a replacement phone solve any problem.
If your exchange server does not use public certificates (the ones that your company has to pay for), or the certificate comes from some publisher that WP7 doesn't know about, it will be touch to set it up. For one, import the server certificates directly does not work. In the past with WM phones, MS suggests you need to import the root certificate instead. So, see if you can find the root certificate for it.
agreed - was able to get Corporate Store to allow me to try settings on another Focus, with same results.
can see the Folders on my Outlook (some are unique to my Exchange Server), so we know that we are nearly there. little more tweaking, and also, update to a new Server,
but, that might not be for week or so, so if anyone has solutions, would be much appreciated.
I had problems with mine and worked with our Exchange admin. We found it was the encryption part of our policies. Both Device and Storage card encryption parts of the policy have to be turned off. After some research this is correct and expected to be fixed in Early 2011 when Microsoft starts pushing this for business.

Do you mean a password for the domain or the screen lock password? They are talking about the policy that requires a alpha numeric password (or not allowing simple passwords) for unlocking your screen. Our company allows simple passwords (just numbers) so I didn't see the problem.
We don't have a certificate, and all I had to do was go to advanced and turn off encrypted SSL connection ( I also have alphanumeric and symbol password for exchange)
I am referring to the screen lock policy in Exchange. Of course alphanumeric and symbol passwords for exchange/domain authentication will work.
Installing SSL Cert (quick and dirty)
Email your server's SSL cert to a GMail account. Hotmail blocks the attachment as an unsafe filetype.
Open the attachment and Phone7 should ask you if you want to install. Go back and set up your Outlook account.
Got mine working on Exchange 2003 even after the error messages
This happened to me as well. We have an Exchange 2003 server and what I did was go to "email and accounts" on the phone and went through the proccess and setup everything correctly but still got the error messages.
Now this is what fixed my issue (strange). I got out of the "email and accounts" and went into all programs list and opened "Outlook" , from there I put the settings in again for my account and presto, it just started working and syncing.
I did 2 phones likes this already and it works. Dont ask me how, but it does.
Hope this helps OP and anyone else using Exchange 2003.
