might be a stupid question but do you have to be rooted to install non market apps on your device? if not how might i go about doing this?
No, there are a few methods to sideload applications that work on even factory default phones. The only limitation is that you must use a computer program to push the application to your phone over USB; you can't install them from the phone itself.
The simplest method I believe is this program here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/and...40770-ac-sideload-wonder-machine-windows.html

I dont have access to wifi at home so i was wondering if i can install download apps from my computer and transfer it to my g1? do i need root to do this? and where can i find chomp sms?
Transfer the apk to your phone's memory card using the USB cable, then unplug and install the apk using Apps Installer. Though if you don't have any kind of internet access on the phone you can't install Apps Installer from the market, which means you're stuck at square one.
do i need root?
No, I don't think so.
search market for "ChompSMS" i think its one word. and yeah make sure you go into application settings and say check the box allowing for install from "unknown" sources.
I have switched jobs and ended up with a VM Samsung Intercept I am growing to like it but I hate the bloatware other then rooting it is there anyway to uninstall the junk I will never use and keep the other junk from running at start up every single time?
At a fresh boot I have 52 Megs after running advanced task killer and stopping the bloatware I have 62
Amazon MP3 Never used it never will use it it runs at start up every single time I reboot the phone and I have to go in and kill it (Makes me want to never use Amazon again)
MAPS I have turned off all location bases services but everytime I reboot the phone that dang maps loads again (I Hate it)
Market I use it to download apps and games but I don't need it running every single time I reboot
Voice Dailer never use it doubt I ever will
SSA (not sure what it is)
Hello,
I have the same problems as you do. Download an app called startup cleaner from the marketplace. There you can have it kill the apps you don't want at startup. It's the closest way to getting rid of them without rooting your phone.
Everyone asks this, it's not unique to one phone
These are system apps and are in a system directory that is write and delete protected. Think of root as admin on a computer it grants you special privileges like write and delete.
You lack the permissions necessary without root. As for the answer to you question I think you knew it when you posted and after this should most defiantly know the correct answer is often the most obvious.
When I was new to android I was worried too, but don't worry. Just find a "stock rom" and if you need to ever send the device in you will be able to flash the stock images on to the built in flash memory. It's like any writable memory you can always write over it with original information if you have source for the original info.
Hi I don't have a Samsung Intercept but I know that any rooted phone can remove bloatware using the app, Titanium Backup. You need to be rooted in order for app to work, and it is free.
Eric
Yeah you have to root your phone before you can remove system apps. I suggest anyone root there phone, you can make it like 100 times better. Go over to sdx-developers.com and look around in the intercept section for how to root your phone!

Very simple
Rooting this phone is quite simple - using only help and posts from xda I was able to root my intercept, remove the annoying bloatware (which really makes the system run great) and use my phone as a full infrastructure mode Wi-Fi hotspot for my android tablet.
Don't waste your time with startup cleaners and task killers - just head over to the dev section and read the guide and root your phone - then install Titanium Backup from the market - you can use it to remove factory installed apps but still keep a backup of them - you will need to restore them if VM ever pushes out another OTA update (which I doubt; I don't see us getting gingerbread on this device)
PM me if you need help rooting your Intercept. You need a data sync cable, a windows PC, and a little bit of time to get it going.

i am just in the middle of looking for that in the forum, i don't understand what it is and how it works... can't find easy explanation...
The first three steps of one of my manual tutos:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20069222&postcount=3
Helps you get ADB running on windows.
ADB is Android Debug Bridge. It provides terminal-based interface for interacting with your phone’s file system.
And this makes a small simple script to easily connect to your device.

Check my other manual tutos if you are interested in some examples of what you can do with ADB. (On my sig)
thanks eded333, i will have a close look to that. I like to understand, but i feel like my computer skills are to small to go ahead in that step. but anyway, i will try
Unless you want to use your e-ink device as a tablet, you don't want to have a market app (even Amazon) on it. Or to have mail programs. I personally prefer to use it for reading though I have a normal tablet for other stuff.
Anyways, my point is try to get used to adb way, this one is keeping your nook less bloated than anything else.

Hi I have NewsOn apk working on my AFTS but I can't get the application to work on a coworkers AFTS. Can I copy and paste files from my device to another so that NewsOn will work the same as on my device?
The problem is NewsOn requires Google services, which I somehow was able to install on my device but can't get it to install and run on my buddy's.
Thanks for any advice in advance.
In the tech world - dependancies are nothing that you just shrug off.
If the app needs the Google Services Framework, it needs the google services framework. And it will always ask for it - ad nausium, and probably quit if it doesnt find it.
On Android in general - an easy way to copy apps and its settings ("save data") from one device to another one is Titanium Backup.
You need root to use it - btw. That are other "cloud backup solutions" that don't require root per se, all of those arent very good. Without root you run into severe limitations with restoring app data. Because of the android security framework (one app isn't allowed to write data into another apps data folder).
But that doesn't help you one bit - if the app requires a Google framework thats on your device, but not on your "buddies".
Theres no magic that will solve that.

Thank you for your input.
It seems like there's always a catch or a road block to work around in the "Android World".
This problem I'm faced with, doesn't it seem like there has to be an achievable fix?
Im just not on that level to know exactly why or pin point what I did that gave me the ability
to use an app that from what I kind of understood isn't possible to install on a non rooted fire stick.
Isn't there a method I've must have unknowingly performed that enabled me to use NewsOn?
Or could it just be a glitch or fluke?
I haven't heard or found anything on the web indicating someone has installed an app on a non rooted fire stick that requires Google services in order to function.
What's your or anyone elses opinion on this?
Thank you for sharing.
I was able able to install and get working NewsOn on a Firestick Gen 2 without root. Installed NewsOn (Apps2fire) then dumped my Google Play and Play Services from my phone (apk manager +) and used apps2fire to install them on the Firestick too. BINGO! Unfortunately I can NOT get it working on Fire TV Box using the same method..
Hello guys, I am back! [中文請向下讀]
I am back with a new method for installing Gapps in a better way. I have just installed on a Yota3 phone and seems very stable this time. However, I still need someone to test this out to make sure things are alright.
For the rooting method, I will create another thread later on.
Tester requirement:
1. Windows 7 or higher
2. Has ADB and Fastboot installed (Will write-up how to do this)
3. Has a USB wire (Unless you never charge your phone..)
4. Disposable phone data (Yes, risky process, backup all your stuff before you start)
I will update this thread later... :fingers-crossed:
Chinese Section 中文區:
剛完成安裝到一部Yota3上, 但仍需要一名測試人員測試一下方法可靠性.
測試人員要求:
1. Windows 7 或以上
2. 已安裝ADB及Fastboot (會再另外寫安裝教學)
3. 有USB線....
4. 電話上的資料可以被刪除 (請備份備份備份!)
no need to do like this, no need to root YOTA3 phone too. you may just install an APP named GO谷歌安装器 in original AppStore of YOTA3 then use this app to install Google Apps
Welp, its OK if you don't even need Google at all. Would you allow the device that you use every day for more than 8 hours has some unknown or untrusted apps installed? I would say NO. If you stop just right here, there is no point to have a new phone too.
You talking about this?

I can't even get INTO Google Play Store to change setting on whatever that app is called.
