Install apps from computer? - G1 General

I dont have access to wifi at home so i was wondering if i can install download apps from my computer and transfer it to my g1? do i need root to do this? and where can i find chomp sms?

Transfer the apk to your phone's memory card using the USB cable, then unplug and install the apk using Apps Installer. Though if you don't have any kind of internet access on the phone you can't install Apps Installer from the market, which means you're stuck at square one.

do i need root?

No, I don't think so.

search market for "ChompSMS" i think its one word. and yeah make sure you go into application settings and say check the box allowing for install from "unknown" sources.

This is my first android phone im trying to figure out how to install apks onto my phone i read some threads and looked on youtube but still no cigar what programs do i need installed on my phone or computer, right now i have eoe app installer and i thought i put a apk file on my phone but its saying nothing found if some one could quickly break down the process for me or point me to the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.... once again this is my first android phone im a iphone convert(i see the light) so i gotta learn how to think again
There are a few ways of doing this. I like to use tAttachApkInstaller from the Android Market. Install that, than just email yourself via gmail the apk file. Once you recieve the email you'll see an option on what to use to download the APK. Use the app I just told you about, and you're good.
what your looking for is "sideloading".
there should be a couple stickys describing how to enable sideloading.
Just download a file manager.
Have Root (if not, you should), then get Root Explorer.
Do not have Root (again, you should), then get Astro
I just drag the apk file to the sd card and then disconnect the phone from the computer and look for the apk with the file explorer that the phone brings and just click it... done!
^ if you use Awesome Drop you wont need to use a cable.... I usually just download apps straight to the phone using the browser.
Thanks for the feedback it's seems like there are a few different ways to skin a cat I'm try some of the suggestions

Got mine... Finally!!!!!

I'm really really excited...! This is my dream tablet, I've been waiting for this for over a month. And now its finally mine! But there is a problem, since I've no WiFi network in my house(for now), how can I install applications. I know the android applications are .apk format, but I don't know from where to download them. I got the file manager HD .apk file but I don't know how to install it. Please help!
Youll have to root your tablet then you can install apks locally. Alternatively you can try easy installer. You will need a internet connection as its required by the Market to install apps.

I don't think you have to root to install apps locally... as long as you have the unknown sources option checked, you can install apps from wherever you want. If you have a desktop with internet that you can get to, you can download the apk's from various torrent sites, and I think there is a web version of the android market? I'm sure there are other places as well, just search on Google. anywhooo, then just transfer the file over to your A500 via the USB cable or flash drive, and open the file through the app manager option that pops up when you tap on it, then click install.
I have had no problem download APKs onto my desktop computer and then putting them on a Micro SD card to use on the A500 without having to root anything.
u can use Docs to go to navigate to .apk on your tablet and launch instal from there. Thats my way)

Congrats on getting your Inconia!
For apps like the filemanager you could just download them from the Android marketplace, then they would install themselves. Otherwise, place them on your sd card if you're downloading to your PC first. Apps will also install if they are in your download folder on the tablet (say for example, if you download from the dev's website or email them to yourself as an attachment).
One thing you might have to do first is check the setting that allows you to install "unsigned" third-party app. I believe it's: Setting->Applications->Unknown Sources.
From what I understand, there's not much concern of installing something harmful anymore (for which this setting was designed to protect against), but I could be wrong. Just be careful who you are getting the app from if it's not from the market, a dev's site or a reputable person here at the forum.
That's my $.02 Have fun!
Just get a home network!
Enjoy your Iconia....I love mine!
Congratulations
- No need to root for installing apk, just check the checkbox (the Iconia will told you what you have to do anyway)
- Get a wifi quick
Need Moboplayer and A good office editor

[Q] unable to install apps?

Hi,
First post so please be gentle. I've got a Lg GT540 running 1.6 and wanted to install a couple of apps onto the phone internal memory, so I got the apk files onto my desktop and connected the phone up via usb and could not and have not been able to copy these files onto the internal memory. In fact the phone does not come up as a drive or anything and copying the files onto the sd card leaves them stuck there and not being installed.( Mainly the astro file manger app.)
I then considered upgrading the phone to 2.1 via the LG site and downloaded LG suite etc and all was going well until the process stopped at 4% upgrade and requested I disconnect from pc, remove battery etc etc. I tried to follow that procedure 3 times and it still failed.
Not beaten I then found some stuff online to enable me to reflash to 2.2 (Modaco) and started that process. One of the first things it required me to do was start the phone in Fastboot mode by holding the camera button down whilst powering up. THe phone stubbornly refused to go into Fast boot.
Sooo, How do I get to copy Astro onto the internal memory so I can do what I want to and/or how can I upgrade to 2.2/
Firstly when you try to get into fastboot it wont work until you install a fastboot kdz.
This will allow you to flash roms onto ur phone.
I've made a video on a "how to" its in the general, look trought the pages or visit www.YouTube/user/tech2tuts
There's also a video on how to install android 2.3 swiftdroid. Its on the same channel in the favorites.
But beware u will lose all you apps unfortunately. Unless you get astro file manager or titanium back up which requires your phone to be rooted.

Unable to install apps
Hi Chris, Thank you for the link to the demo and I will need to look at that with a view to implementing. No doubt I'll be asking for some assistance during the process.
However I'm still at a loss with not being able to install apps directly onto the phone memory and would appreciate some pointers on that. I have acess to a desktop running XP and a laptop running Windows 7.
Thanks in advance.
You probly cant install apps due to lack of internal memory. Bye install the Kdz it will enable over 230mb of internal , along with apps to sd, so no need for use of internal.
unable to install apps
Thanks again, but phone showing 3.6 gb avaiable on sd card and 120mb available on internal memory?
I really want to know why my pc connection only reads my sd card and not the internal memory. Is there an approved way of connection ie whether I need to use any LG software etc.
Hmm that's odd. When you connect to comp it should only show SD card, have u tried a factory reset?

unable to install apps
Hi again,
have made some progress and managed to update the os to 2.1 off the LG site.
When usb plugged into pc it does read the sd card and I am able to copy files inc apps to it but do not know how to run them!!! My belief is that I need to install apps to the phone memory???
Ohhh i think i see your problem now.
So uve downloaded apps from this website or other?
And you want to know how to install them?
Get astro file manager or any other ones the same, connect your phone, put the Downloaded file into a folder , like downloads in your SD card then disconnect your phone , open astro the go into SD card and downloads folder and press on the app, it will ask you to install and Bam your done.
Or if its saying that ur not able to install it, go settings>applications>development>usb debugging tick it and also allow installation or 3rd party apps tick that to.
I think that what you mean?
Hi Chris, I think you are close to understanding my problem, I have a apk file of astro pro on my pc but am not sure where to copy it to. I have tried copying it onto my sd card but am then not able to run it?
Do I need to have the phone rooted etc?

The first thing to do would be to downlaod Astro Free from the market and then navigate to the sd (home on astro) and select the apk, open app manager and install, install. Now it will be installed.
Tap here and then tap download directly from market to download from market.

Yeah i understand. Follow these instructions. Astro is free on the market anyway. The pro version is no different.
A very big thank you to Chris and Quinney I actually had the Astro apk on my laptop and sent it across via Bluetooth and I'm now up and running, Only had bluetooth working since the update to 2.1
Wouldn't mind getting it to run a little faster though, I see people reporting 800mhz being smooth.
unable to install apps
Hi, thanks Chris and Quinney, Finally managed to send the Astro apk from my laptop via bluetooth and all my problems are behind me.
Thanks once again.
No problem.

i am just in the middle of looking for that in the forum, i don't understand what it is and how it works... can't find easy explanation...
The first three steps of one of my manual tutos:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20069222&postcount=3
Helps you get ADB running on windows.
ADB is Android Debug Bridge. It provides terminal-based interface for interacting with your phone’s file system.
And this makes a small simple script to easily connect to your device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20069359&postcount=14
Check my other manual tutos if you are interested in some examples of what you can do with ADB. (On my sig)
thanks eded333, i will have a close look to that. I like to understand, but i feel like my computer skills are to small to go ahead in that step. but anyway, i will try
Unless you want to use your e-ink device as a tablet, you don't want to have a market app (even Amazon) on it. Or to have mail programs. I personally prefer to use it for reading though I have a normal tablet for other stuff.
Anyways, my point is try to get used to adb way, this one is keeping your nook less bloated than anything else.

How to download apps with no 3g or wifi on the phone its self?

As the title says I have an xperia play but the wifi isnt working. Ive done a factory reset, used pc companion to reinstall the software and even installed a custom kernel and rom but it wont even turn on the wifi thus I cant search for a router.
Is there a way I can at least download the apps i want such as
fpse
screen filter
various games
themes
ect
even with the broken wifi on my phone.
Ive had a search online and Im either wording my search wrong or its not possible to do what I want.
Also any advice a possible fix for the wifi would be great but Im assuming that its the hardware thats broke.
With usb cable, you may download app and install with adb or any pc companion software
You don't have warranty anymore?
Well, you can download the apk of the app and then copy it to your phone. Then just install it, shouldn't be too difficult.
Only problem could be, if you don't have any file explorer on your phone
Google the app you want , download it in your desktop and transfer to your phone. Install it via file manager
Sideloading, How I do it.
I haven't seen anyone mention this yet.
You need to first go into your phone settings and enable Unknown Sources found in the Security tab. Unknown sources will enable you to install apps without the Play Store.
Then connect your phone to your PC with your USB cable and select either Storage Mode or USB Mount, depending on your phone it will be labeled differently.
Your phone's folders will appear on your computer, simply drag the .apk file into your phone to transfer. Once the transfer is complete, remove the USB cable or unmount the phone.
Finally, use any file browser on your phone to find the .apk you transferred and click it. Your launcher should automatically ask you if you want to install the .apk
Note: App files are taged as .apk so any app you download should be something like Facebook.apk. I personally just do a general search for whatever I want and then include "apk" in the search field. You will find 100+ websites where you can download various apps, but the trick is, you usually have to do your research on the Play Store first to find out what the latest version number of the app is because there are mostly outdated versions floating around the internet.
I guess the best part about side loading is that the Google Play Store can't filter what you install. So apps that were previously not compatible could possibly run on your device no problem. Like Netflix used to be incompatible officially with my phone but I sideloaded it and it worked fine. Netflix finally released official support but the fact is I got it before everyone else.
as they said, you should have a pc and it have the apk file to download it to phone
