Was fixing a broken windows vista laptop today, and wanted to extract the outlook PST before installing a fresh win7,, so booted to win7 install DVD, called up the repair options all the way to command prompt, plugged in the Leo running typhoon, and what do you know mass storage works and I copy off the files no problem from the command line .
Ok, blah, I hear you say, but when I later connect that same Leo in mass mode to the now freshly installed win7 machine, does it work? Can it find drivers? No. You gotta update this and reboot that, stand on one leg and wiggle the USB cable just so.
Farcical
( oh and for anyone that didn't already know, you can boot PCs from a live SD card in USB mode with the Leo,not all phones can do that)
Trivial trivia ends. Nite.

I've been trying to get anything to recognize my Hero on my PC for the past few days.
What I've tried:
Installing HTC Sync
Installing Android SDK
Installing the HTC HERO DIAG drivers
Doing ##DIAG# and not doing it.
...And all different combinations of those. The problem is I can't get QPST, CDMA Workshop, UniCDMA, or QXDM, etc to recognize it. The Hero synced to the HTC Sync a couple times, but nothing else. It won't even assign a COM port on the computer.
The phone is also rooted, which, I wouldn't think would make much difference, but I'm running out of ideas here.
Any help is really appreciated.
Did you install the regular HTC drivers ? Go to your device manager and see if it says android phone when its plugged in if its there tell it to update driver and point it to the folder called HTC drivers located in the HTC sync program directory.
I tried to do that but the driver wizard said that it could not find any drivers that were better than the ones already installed. (or something to that effect)
EDIT: Ah! I don't know what happened but it appeared on COM5 as "HTC Diagnostic Interface". That may be what I needed. We'll see.
I get the same thing, says "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."
"HTC Dream Composite ADB Interface" <--???
Exactly the same for me.
Device not recognized, Remove and reinstall HTC Sync and manually selecting drivers, Device wiping and trying again, using a different USB port, using a different cable, reinstalling windows!!!!!, using a different computer, Pulling out my hair!!!!!
Nothing works!!!
However, It did used to ask for mounting and unmounting the SD when plugged in but it has NEVER found HTC sync on my PC.
Now, all I get is Charging battery on the Hero and device not recognized on the PC.
Device manager politely tells me "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
My system is Windows 7 X64 and my Hero Has run both the shipped ROM and now a cooked 2.1.
Please help me!
I have never been able to sync my Hero on any of my Win7 machines. I have been able to sync sporadically with my work XP Pro SP3 machine though. However, since flashing the AOSP 1.6 rom, HTC sync isn't recognizing my phone anymore. I can however mount the SD card.
Problems connecting Evo to PC
Same problem, but on EVO... Anyone ever figure it out??
I should elaborate I suppose lol... Everything *worked* fine, and then suddenly, appearantly for no reason, it just stopped... Device manager now calls the HTC diag driver an unknown usb device and gives the same warning message as above. And when I try to update the driver, gives the same message about it being up to date...
I have not been able to get ADB to work on my phone since the first time I flashed 2.2, when plugged in it will do the "do you want to turn on usb storage" message and it works fine.
You all might want to try installing the android adb drivers. Its a well know issue with the htc drivers. If you click on my avatar and go to my post you can find my thread on how to install adb on windows 7 32/64 and xp. Adb works fine for me and sync as well. The adb drivers might help out. Well good luck.
Edit: Running Aosp's 3/26 gb build RA1.7 Jason m's 806 kernel kifno build prop tweak -mp
Yea it's Me Again With The
Modified Hero

more than likely it is your usb cable has been damaged.
i had the same problem, i went to my provider and got a new usb cable for it. (they gave it to me for free, no questions) no more problems at all, works like a charm.
i still have the old cable too, it will not recognize the hero on the computer. in fact if i plug the cable in without the phone, the cable itself actually comes up and says unrecognized device. but it works great for charging.
Is anyone else having issues with the tmob vibrant usb debugging driver from the android SDK? They won't install because windows is saying they have no info concerning my hardware. Thanks in advance for any help.
Here is a link to the 64-bit drivers which worked for me:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
And here is a link to the 32-bit drivers, although I have not tested them:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
i can confirm that the 32 bit drivers are working...
Installed the 64 bit drivers on w7 ultimate. Still cant get to either of the phones storage.

Coming from a G1 (haven't received my Vibrant yet) there will be a notification to mount the SD Card so you can use them on your PC (when you connect the USB cable) and you wont need any drivers for it (acts like a flash drive to the PC). Is this not the case for the Vibrant?
The Debugging drivers should have nothing to do with the SD Storage on the phone and mounting it up to the computer.

I've run the 64-bit drivers at home and they worked famously.
Would it be possible for someone to post the 32-bit ones in a zip format somewhere? We block exe's here at work, and I'm getting 'The content is not supported on this phone.' when trying to download from the links above on my Vibrant...
The stock usb_drivers from the SDK just don't want to work for debug mode on it...blarg.
Thanks...

I'm having the same issue with the 32-bit ones. The .exe installs fine, but after plugging in my phone, I get that error. Clicking on the balloon shows an 'Unknown Device'. Double-clicking on 'Unknown Device' then clicking on 'Driver' then 'Driver Details' gives this: No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device
EDIT: Nvm. Bad USB port. Had a few of them stop working a few months back. Guess I forgot. Up and running now!
Spot on! 32-bit is working fine for me. Appreciate it.
cant get droidexplorer to work any ideas?
works on windows 7 ultimate x64
thanks
My phone doesn't mount when plugged in to a PC
USB debugging is switched on but does not activate when plugged in.
The phone shows its charging but that is it.
I am able to access the SD card normally on the phone but there is no indication of the phone being connected when I plug it into my PC.
I have tried;
plugging it into different PCs
different cables
the unbricking process, several times (even though it doesn't really apply, my card is visible in Android)
flashing to different roms with a wipe in between
Any ideas?
I can't figure it out.

me too same problem after updating to froyo ... but i'm different than you the it connect after a while .. but now for example when connecting the phone to my car it doesn't read it because it take too long to connect .. any help ?
Have you got a working set for drivers?
This was my main problem, I used to just have to play around with the USB and eventually it would mount after about two or three reboots.
I installed HTC Sync & updated drivers and so far it's been working the way it should be, even if you don't use HTC sync just download it and grab the drivers & then replace files with the the
Code:
HTC Hero driver for 32-bit Windows 7: HTC_Driver_32.zip
HTC Hero driver for 64-bit Windows 7: HTC_Driver_64.zip
That sorted my problem but not sure if it works for everyone.
(I'm using Windows 7 [64bit] Ultimate)

I think you are right. it happened to me and it was because drivers.... once windows finalized to install the drivers is sure you will get the option to mount as drive...
Sent from my HTC Legend
No its not the drivers. My PC still connects successfully with the phone when in recovery mode. That's how I was able to complete the USB unbrick process.

dear friends .i tried to change my windows 7 to xp but that happend
i used usb_multiboot steps to do it and when i format my hdd and try to install it from the usb i get a lot of missed files to be copied to install xp
i tried to make others xp copies with more than 20 times it show me same(missed files which can not complete install) what can i do?????
Okay so what did you do now? How exactly did you try to install XP. What version of XP did you use, and what error does it give you exactly.
thanks so much for reply
what i do now is crying beside my htc shift ca not do nmothing with message every time say "setup cannot copy the file" and escap alot of file then not complet install
i used 2 copies of xp
tablet and other service pack 3 following usb-multi boot software by format my 2g usb and copy files from my xp source and boot well from usb it show me text install and go on then get copying files to install but that message come over and over "setup cannot copy the file"
what shall i do?
Alright so let me be sure that I have this right. You have tried to install XP from a 2GB USB drive, and it starts to install, then says that it cannot copy a file to the hard drive. Have you formatted your Shifts HDD using the Windows installer, and made sure to format it as NTFS? Also, are you using a legit copy of XP? Sometimes ones that you download from the net have things removed to make them have a smaller footprint once installed, but they also don't install correctly via USB. If you have a real retail XP copy, or have downloaded a copy of plain XP, I would redo your USB stick as it sounds like not all of the files where copied correctly to it. Let me know what happens.
first thanks so much for share and rely
second i formated it to ntsf after make 10g for c and the rest for d
second i downloaded the 2 copies from internet the tablet and the sp3
thanks so much again
i can not study and that bother me a lot cause i use my shift in my study thanks guys
Thats what I thought. You need to format both your USB drive and your Shift's HDD to NTFS. You should be asked what you want to format the HDD as when installing XP onto your Shift from the USB drive. I would also reccomend getting a clean version of XP Service Pack 2 as it seems to be about the most stable version to install from a USB drive. Download/get XP STOCK SP2, no modifications just the stock image, format your USB drive and Shift HDD as NTFS, and try again. Let me know.
thanks man so much i will do your advice and tell you
but i can not get real guide to format my usb to ntsf from windows thanks
Heres a sure fire way to format it as NTFS:
1-Open a command prompt.
2-Enter DISKPART
3-Enter LIST DISK
4-SELECT DISK (X)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS
Replace the (X) with the name of your thumbdrive under My Computer.
Wait for it to finish, then close that window and voila! Your USB drive is formatted as NTFS and ready for use.
sorry
i did it only show my 0 disk of my desktop hard eisk but never show me the usb
Can you format it through My Computer?
thanks man so much i already change my usb stick to 4g ntsf one and it work now great
i am now install the xp sp2 retail
when i finish what shal i do for make other stuff worki like wifi 3g fingerprint and touch screen???/
i did it.........................thanks guys
how to enable 3g and wirless now
and change display??
Just install the drivers from the HTC website and it should work.
thanks man i already done but problem with
intel graphic for xp
wireless
3g
control center
Download the graphics drivers from Intel. You MUST install the Control Center and ECD drivers before the WiFi drivers. After you install the Control Center, go into it and turn on WiFi, Windows will then (hopefully) find a driver and install it. And for 3G I don't know as I don't use my SIM slot on my Shift, I tether my HD2 via WiFi for mobile internet.
thanks so much man you are so good kind person for that great help and care
everything is working now well but the vga and 3g....any way thanks so much
When I plug in my Htc Glacier w7 automatically installs drivers for the phone. Upon inspection the drivers are for remote NDIS internet sharing. So great i can tether super easy, and all. The problem lies in the fact that i have no way of accessing the SD card. even when i mount the SD card on the phone it fails to show up on the computer. The SD card works fine, and the phone works fine. I have all the usb drivers for the mt4g but i never get a chance to apply them. If i got to update drivers it says its already up to date even when i point it right at he usb driver folder. If i uninstall the drivers and unplug then replug in the device they are just automatically reinstalled, not giving me a chance to do anything else. Just upgraded to w7 from xp64 this is the only major problem i am having.
Just in case you haven't tried, in settings check under connect to pc, and you should have the choice to turn the phone into a portable hard drive or something like that... can't say what the exact wording is on the phone, as I'm not running stock anymore and the connect to pc sub-menu isn't there anymore.
