Hi,
I noticed that most users can monitor their app, services battery usage through the default settings>about>battery use.
However, mine shows only display, idle, standby and calls. Do I have to enable something to be able to see them?
Bought the Galaxy S 4 days ago. Ex iPhone user, got tired of apple and decided to try android as an alternative. So far so good.

Battery history and show the partial wake and cpu and 'other' usage gives a much better picture of battery eating apps than that battery usage one (this menu is exposed in the likes of Android System Info app, or Spare Parts, or SGS tools)

Under 2.2 the battery history is not really detailed and just shows things that used a lot of power, in your case (and everyone else's) the display uses the most power and after that comes usually the radio and calls. If you want more details follow the instructions above or charge the phone and play 15min of angry birds or so, that should show up
Cool. Thanks guys!

Just wondering which rom/tweaks you guys run to get the best battery life for every day use. I cant get any more than 10 hours with the CM7.0.2 rom.
I really don't use any tweaks. I just adjust the brightness of the screen throughout the day.
Autokiller.
And make sure your not constantly syncing stuff. Like gmail, facebook or weather. Stretch out those sync intervals as long as you can manage. Or just refresh it manually when you need.

Download Battery Monitor Widget and it can create a graph of usage over time and start watching what is running and when the phone draws current. You can learn a lot by watching the usage, how often and how much current gets drawn even when the device is sleeping.
The three biggest users of power are the display, voice calls, and GPS. Both GPS and voice calls draw about the same, the display uses less but between the three they are hogs compared to what else is usually running.
I have the same troubles and will try these things. Thanks for your help!

Battery Tweak Suggestions
Well there is the Collin Battery Tweak that I used when I was running AOSP 2.2. It worked wonders. I was able to get about 3 to 4 days on it without having to rechange. However I am not certain this will work on CM7.
What settings are you using under CM Settings > Performance ?
So all of a sudden my battery life is absolutely horrible. The other day I hadn't even touched the thing after taking it off the charger 5 hrs earlier and it was at 45%. As far as I know nothings changed besides updating Apps... Could it be one? If so, how do I figure out which? I don't use facebook and don't have any Apps running in the background, at least they aren't showing up in the status bar. Any suggestions?

What is Battery Status showing?
I had Facebook go nuts the last few days and the new update yesterday seems to spend much less time in Facebook once I was able to access to turn Notifications and auto refresh off.
Likely is an app you can disable all suspect apps in App info on ICS if you are running an ICS ROM on your Nexus S (each app at a time disable) and see if Battery improves and narrow down which specific app is the issue. If you are on 2.X then you may want to use an App like Titanium Backup to freeze a suspect app and see how battery life goes the rest of the day.
Under settings? Shows display at 65% and several others with minimal usage, less than 7%. I am not using ics yet. I don't use facebook so I know that's not the problem.
I know about freezing Apps in titanium but how do I narrow down the suspect list? Right now it's all of them.

Can you post a breakdown of, say, the top 10 apps and their usage from the battery usage screen?
OR
If you can, take a screenshot with your phone. If youre running CM or other modded roms, you may already have the option in the power menu. If not, there's plenty of apps that will take screenshots, assuming you're rooted.
It may be a recently installed app hogging the CPU clock
Try installing app like SetCPU (No need to have a rooted phone to track CPU load)
Check if the CPU runs 1000 MHZ constantly. It should be 100 when idle.
If so, try un-istalling the latest apps u installed one by one and ypu can detect the faulty app. Including recently updated apps.
I recently noticed my battery life is horrible as well. The battery usage screen shows that Google Maps is taking up 45% of my battery!!!!
Last time I opened Maps was several days ago. It was also updated about a week ago; so it all lines up.
Spare Parts app will break down cpu/ram usage by application. Install it and check to see which app is out of control.
Before getting the Note, I've been an iphone user ever since the first one came out. I switched especially because of the nice large screen which is handy for the type of work I do.
Some questions though:
1- Battery Life: I was pretty handy on the Iphone in getting everything I didn't need (some notifications, location services on certain apps) turned off to safe battery...while keeping only the ones I wanted. I haven't figured out how exactly to do this on the Note. My battery life is poor...at least compared to what I was getting on the iphone. I typically start my day at 8:30AM, and yesterday by 6PM the battery was already at around 10% (where I can't take pictures....)
2- Must I have GMAIL app and MAIL app? For some reason the GMAIL app's emails update much quicker than the main app I use MAIL. So when a new mail notification comes in I have to manually refresh the MAIL app for it to catch up with the GMAIL app. Otherwise I would have to wait a couple of minutes of the mail to show on MAIL app.
3- On Mail App I have two email accounts. Why is it that my welcome page is the page showing my accounts rather than my "ALL MAIL" page which is where I left it originally?
Thanks for sorry for the NOOB questions.
Ad 2):
Depending on what other email account you have there colud be an specific app for that provider that also supports push email (eg. Yahoo). Or you colud configure Google Mail to poll for mails from your other accounts.
1.) try to close auto sync, bluetooth, gps and use wifi everytime its available because 3G drain much more battery. and lower the brightness on ur screen to ur lowest, that can save a lot of battery (just open them when u need to use it)
or Root your Note and use custom rom. There are many roms that help you with battery.
hope that helps.

Battery - 10% in a day??! How much were you using the phone?
Allow the phone to fully charge and discharge for a full cycles. The screen is a big consumer of power - don;t use auto-brightness and keep the screen down to the best workable level for you. Also, the more apps you have using push syncing, the worse your battery will be.
Depending on what you're using the phone for, you should easily get a full day's reasonable use out of it.
I agree with the point shaoran_ojo made about wifi - but also turn wifi off when you're not using it.
Finally, it's absolutely right that many of the custom ROMs will give you better battery life
You can check the battery usage over time, if you go to Settings menu and then About phone -> Battery usage. You will see there what eats most power (most likely, Display).
Touch the chart in the upper part of this page to expand it - see if you can relate biggest drops of battery charge to some particular activities. For example, playing Crayon Physics drains the battery extremely fast.
Do you happen to be in areas with poor cell coverage? I've had phones drain like there's no tommorow in poor coverage areas, especially when GPS is turned on since most phones are equiped with assisted GPS chips that use cell-tower triangulation in order to get a faster fix on your position.
You could root your phone and switch to custom kernels or roms for better battery life as well as performance. A few ways in which you could then save battery are by undervolting or underclocking the processor or using an app like titanium backup pro to freeze battery draining apps. Wifi is also a big battery drainer. You can set the wifi sleep policy to screen off to curb its usage or keep it off entirely when you dony need it. Gps and bluetooth can be kept off and the screen brightness can be lowered. Im sure you wont be disappointed with the note's battery life after you tweak it right.

First of all decrease the screen brightness if possible. I have my brightness set to minimum and I have Screen Filter (free in the market) installed and set to 50%. This setup works for me when I am indoors and when I am outside I just disable Screen Filter. Hopefully it will work for you too, maybe with a little tweaking of the exact percentage.
Then take notice if your phone is unusually hot when you haven't used it in the last 5 minutes. This may indicate there is an app keeping your device from sleeping. Check the battery usage (Settings -> About Phone -> Battery Usage). Tap the graph and look for unusual drops and periods when the screen is not on but the device is awake.
If you notice something, BetterBatteryStats (paid in the market) might help reveal the source of the problem. Cpu Spy (free in the market) will show you how much time has the device spent in each CPU frequency.
If you are comfortable with it just root your device and install a custom kernel. I can't begin to explain how much this can increase the battery life.
Hope this helps and is not too hard to understand despite my bad english.
Hey guys and please dont crucify me. I know there's a ton of other battery issue threads on this forum and on many others but I cant find the right one. I have looked up each and every one of them, about mediaserver draining the battery about the android system and so on. I have done everything each thread said to, downloaded greenify and hibernated most active apps, disabled and froze certain bloatware with titanium backup pro and so many other things. And I think that the battery would be supposed to perform at its best right now. I am not a very heavy user, I just use my phone for music, calls, a little gaming and the occasional facebook/messenger/browser session with either 4G or WiFi. I have everything everyone ever said turned off. Things like auto backup of Google+ and all location services and auto sync. Screen is constantly at 65% brightness. To further prove my point, at this point in this post which took me like 3 minutes to write, my battery has lost 3 percent. I can leave the phone unplugged all night at 100% and when I wake up it will be at 95% but the moment I pick it up and start playing some music or some games the battery goes down really fast. I can even compare it to the battery of my old Xperia S after a year and a half use which was like 7 hours altogether. Battery stats say that mediaserver takes up 20ish% battery and Android system goes over 40%. I really don't know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, George.
you should look at the time it depletes when screen on, if its below 5 hours from 100% downward then its not good. I have noticed the battery still charges past 100%. So leave it an hour after it reaches 100%. I would also recommend using the charger that came with phone. No usb charging for these tests. Dont use phone while charging either.
Also freezing\debloating can be adverse, at least thats my experience on battery life. So I recommend going back to stock full clean with factory resets.
No recovering of apps or app data for these tests. No contamination so to speak.
Also lg roms allow you to switch off services via taskmanager settings, in settings app you can disable what you dont want to use. No need for debloating\freezing etc.
Switch off location settings, gps and bluetooth for this test. Search for carrier iq on lg g2 forum and how to disable it via settings. Switch of cloud storage(dropbox/box etc) and lg backup stuff. Only google accounts, wifi and mobile networks.
Now for the screen on time test, just use browsing apps. No games or music\movies.
Your screen on time should be 6 hours approximately. From 100 to 0. It can be 5-6 hours. If its below 5 then its not good. this is with good network coverage btw.
thats what I would do

Yes I have tried all of the above. Only thing that sticks out is something called 1013 which keeps running and waking my phone but I think it's something about the sound. Next is Android System with many wakelocks and as I said with 30+ % battery consumption. Everything location-wise is off. Actually everything is off. Every setting. Things go to hell when I open 4G or WiFi. Also I have the international model so I don't think there's carrier IQ in my device, or maybe I didn't find it in an app suggested by someone here for that purpose. System Tweaks I think it was.
Could you post a screen shot?

I've had android 4x do this on multiple devices, multiple roms for no apparent reason. Wipe it and start over. Wipe everything. Especially directories with any form of music, sound files, videos... ( Use LG Flash Tool and go back to stock 4.2 for example will do just that )
So the OTA came over to my country and now it seems like BBS and WLD are broken. Can't really do anything to show you the more complex battery stats and can't really say that the battery has improved. Reducing the brightness did have some effect but I am not really fond of having it at such low values. Anything else I can do to minimize the Android System battery consumption? Its bigger than what the screen is using, even when it was at 70% brightness.
Sad to say my first LG G2 just got replaced today & am now running into this problem with the 2nd phone. Its literally night and day battery life performance between both phones.
First phone had 0 issues and by now I'd still have battery % in the 90s. New phone is sitting @ 63% after 3 hours of use (setting up phone, few reboots here there....just factory resetted for the 2nd time to try and clear this etc)
Culprits are:
Google Services
Android Core Apps
Media Server
System UI
Both phones are: 4.2.2
build: JDQ39B
Software: D80110c
brightness (which never was an issue)= 45%
O.P,
has your situation improved or worsened since you've encountered this problem? I'm thinking about sending my replacement back for another replacement

I can now say that the battery life of my phone has improved. But sadlyf the problem was probably some corrupt mp3 files that I moved directly from my old device which forced the mediaserver service to run constantly and thus the android system. :/ I still can say that I think it drains a bit fast when I use it for browsing, Facebook, games and stuff but at least when I check the battery consumption, the only things stated there that make a difference are the screen at ~30-35% and the game which I was playing or for example Chrome. It finally feels like that whatever I use drains the battery and not something else in the background but I don't have that good of an impression for the 3000mAh "beast" battery of the G2. Awesome phone though.

I ended up returning my replacement phone and am back on my original G2 until I can get a proper replacement. I can tell you, the G2 does have an awesome battery life if you get a good phone out the box.
The differences between my first G2 and the 2nd one tmobile sent me are night and day. Get a replacement phone while you still have time.
Should have my new one next week. Just hope it's exactly like my first one.
Ex....been using it all day..I mean heavy usage...and in still @ 75%..and the phone is cool to the touch
The replacement g2 would [email protected] 36-37% by now and running hot

You're on 4.2.2, not 4.4.2 when you have the 1013, is that correct?
Try rebooting when the volume is on, rather than rebooting in quiet/vibrate mode.

The OTA came to my country some days ago. Still the battery feels kind of small. Is it normal to lose 1% every ~1-2 minutes on 4G browsing? With nothing else on. No gps no G+ backup no anything.
For those using Ditto Note 4 awesome ROM, you might be aware of several reports of noticeable battery drain issues..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504016
The thread is full of discussion on how to optimize battery consumption (including me) and until our awesome devs confirmed whether it's a ROM or user issue, (it's not present on other ROM users) we should find our ways to find a solution
Below is my personal battery optimization, it worked for me and not sure it will work for everyone. I'm just here to share what I did and how I succeeded.
I. IDENTIFY YOUR DEVICE USAGE (expect a heavy drain if you're a heavy user).
First of all, I'm a mobile person. My lifestyle, either personal or at work greatly relies on always being online and connected.
So definitely the battery of my devices hates me, and I hate them back if they disappoint me haha
My Note 2 setup is as follows:
- Running Dn4 ROM, plus Updates 1-4
- Agni untouched (not Overclocked, not undervoldted)
- I got a Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch which is always connected via bluetooth. It also requires a standalone application on the device - Gear Manager, which installs prerequisite sub-apks for continuous communication between device and the smartwatch.
- Wifi and mobile data always on for reliable online connection (the city has a blanket wifi + I got unlimited data plan)
- Usage: moderate to heavy
- Frequently open applications: Web browser, Gmail, Viber, Skype, Clash of Clans, 9Gag, Perfect Viewer (Comic reader).
II. IDENTIFY WAKELOCKS (to see which triggers and keeps your screen and CPU awake)
1. Install Wakelock detector.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector
2. I recommend to do this before you sleep. Keep your phone fully charged. I suggest to reboot your device then open your frequently open applications (just to freshly start their processes).
3. Don't use your device (that's why I recommend to do this before you sleep). You may start dreaming about unicorns then. JK.
4. Expecting you wake up several hours after, you may check your Wakelcok detector results and see which apps or proccesses are keeping your device awake and how frequent it was triggered.
Note: the app shows two types of wakelocks: Screen wakelocks and CPU wakelocks. You better check them both.
II. APPREHEND YOUR BATTERY HOGGERS (based from Wakelock Detector results)
1.Uninstall those apps you think you won't need or unnecessary.
2.If they are system apps, or you think you might need them in the future, use Titanium Backup to backup them before uninstalling.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
3. Greenify those apps that you prefer to get hibernated when you're not using the device.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify
For my case, I've found out that S-Health, Geo News, Facebook and Viber were the top battery hoggers.
- Saved a backup of S-health and Geo News on Titanium Backup, then uninstalled them both.
- Greenified Facebook, XDA app and 9gag as I'm always online on Desktop during my work (FB, web browsing, and playing mobile games are allowed/required on my work, how awesome is that! lol)
IV. CALIBRATE YOUR BATTERY
Note: We all know our battery deteriorates over time. This might result fake/virtual battery level of charge shown on the status bar. This battery recalibration feature helps to fix the incorrect percentage of charging level.
1. Charge your device up to 100%.
2. Once fully charged, disconnect your device and enter this code to the phone dialer: *#0228#
3. It will show your battery status, at the bottom, select "Quick Start".
4. The device will somehow "refresh" and you'll notice a battery drop from your device.
5. Plug again your device and repeat steps 1 to 4 until you don't get a battery drop (device remain 100% when your device "refresh")
Before, I need to recharge my device 2-3 times a day.
Now I'm able to use my device for a day (maybe longer if I lessen my online activities).
Hope this helps and let you maximize your battery usage.

Great share.
Just a note; You're lucky of the fact that a device running on wifi alone eats up less battery and you being able to use wifi frequently is indeed fortunate.

Indeed. I'm currently living in a wifi-friendly city.
Additional note for this optimization: I quess the smartwatch helped somehow by doing its duties: to have a quick access to my notifications.
That way I don't need to wake my device just to see the time or check the notifications.
I can even do phone calls, text messaging and monitor my calendar just using the smartwatch so maybe that helped as well.

Hi!
Great stuff! I was looking for an app like wakelock detector for a long time...
I have a little problem with the calibration... I repeated the steps yesterday for about 10 hours (20-25 times) , but I didn't get any closer to staying on 100% after pressing quick restart. Sometimes the battery level goes to 83%, 87%, sometimes it stays at 95%-93%. It seems totally random. Maybe it is because my battery is old, and can't be charged till the design levels ?
How many times did you repeat the process ?

After the device is fully charged, it only takes me 3-4 times to repeat the process. Can you try letting the device plugged-in for at least 5 minutes once it reached 100% before proceeding to step 2? Yes, there might be a possibility regarding the condition of your battery but mine is old too but the calibration went smoothly.
