Screen Brightness in EC05 - Epic 4G General

i dont know its just me or the screen is brighter than DI18 , bcz the screen even in the lowest brightness is killing the battery more than eclair .
I just got like 3 hours at screen usage , please let me know is a common "issue" or just me , or more tips to improve the battery performance bcz the phone can be like more than 5 days in standby like calibrate battery or something like that i dont know (i dont have the phone rooted)
Also the battery goes warmer than DI18 like 104 ºF i think is a normal temp for heave usage but i got less in DI18

Thought it was just me. I have brightness all the way down and it's STILL bright.
Will have to try out the app Top nurse recommended. If I have my phone hooked up to my PC and the brightness all the way down and i use it to send texts or surf, it actually drains my battery. Phone also gets really hot.

i´m going to try SyndicateROM - Frozen expecting it have the same brightness level of eclair DI18

What settings are you running with this app nurse?

For the time being I'm done with custom roms. I find that they introduce some quirk or the other that ends up annoying me. For now, stock and rooted, crap ware removed and getting decent battery life.

All it does is choose how bright the phones screen is, but it can go dimmer than the phones settings. Set t any number you want, just (caps lock for emphasis) DO NOT use zero.

Battery problems? Google lies?

So I found this great app that tells me how much life I have left on my battery. I find that with my phone I can hardly go pass 16 hours with MODERATE use yet everyone here is bragging about easily passing 30hrs with HEAVY use. So I'm asking you guys, to please, download this app called BatteryTime Lite and post your pics or info here. Lets compare the results. Remember to set the level to 100% as shown in my pic below..
Also I herd the P/N might be related, mine is 99HKE002-00 F ..Guessing F means Failure.

No, stock. Why you ask?
i read somewhere that Stock and Cyanogen's ROM have display consuming a lot of battery... its fixed on enomther's and modaco's desire port...
On Cyanogen and Stock, Display consumes ~60% battery while on Enomther's and MoDaCo's desire port, display consumes 15~20% battery...

Thats what I herd too..thats why I'm also calling google a lier about saying this thing lasts 20hours with audio playback.
I'm curious, do they see a big improvement in battery when the display using 15-20% battery or its just numbers that were out a place to begin with?
I have identical figures. That combined with picking the N1 from a list says to me that these are just database figures rather than real world ones for your handset.
Root your phone and then install cyanogenmod and one of the under volted kernels. I usually get 24 - 30 hours battery life.
I just ran a test. I left the mp3 player on all night turn all the way on repeat. SO far after 8hrs of playing I was at 52%. If I'm correct, I just might be able to hit 18hrs...MMMM

No problems at all? no 3g issues?, battery only lasting a day or half? or touch screen issues?
Ok after 100% charge..the app is telling me that my phone will last 10hr:48min with moderate use....anyone thinking that the F on my P/N might mean battery sucker..
i have the exact same numbers as you. if you choose other instead of the phone type it asks you to enter your battery's info so it sounds like it only goes by the type of battery anyway. Not actual usage specific to your phone
My phone ends in an F as well. My battery life SUCKS right now. I have tried everything. The weird thing is it was good until I rooted my phone and applied Cyanogen rom. I've tried .2 and .3 for the Cyan rom's, all with bad battery life. I've tried wiping batterystats, fulling draining battery then recharging, task killer to wipe anything in the background, I even have a 2nd battery. No luck. I've also tried the undervolted kernal, but I didn't really notice a difference with it. (Only tried it for about a day so)
Bottom line though, something is going on. Something (I suspect with Cyan's roms) is killing battery life for some of us. I just wish I could figure out what it is.

Any chance you're using Weatherbug or Weatherbug elite (based on your SS)? After installing weatherbug and using the widget I got absolutely ABYSMAL battery life. I've purchased several other weather widgets and none had the effect that Weatherbug did for some reason. I removed it and battery life is back to normal again (moderate use and plenty of battery at the end of the day).

How long your battery lasts definitely depends on the apps youre using, I use my phone a lot, probably more than the average user, although i dont make many calls. My phone will easily last from when I leave my house around 530am till 11pm or so when I go to bed. I do use a task manager to kill stuff I dont need running every once in a while, I think it really just depends on how you use it. I use it for a lot of texting, surfing and news, and Pandora at work. I use wifi when im at home although ive never noticed it eating my battery. Yesterday I was playing Pandora over bluetooth on 3G for a little over 3 hours and it only took 5% of my battery. Im on Cyanogen 5.0.5.3, if that matters. With all that said I rarely go all day without charging it, I usually plug it in a bit at work and plug it in when I get home, but if I dont for whatever reason it easily lasts my whole day.

My battery solution

I've had a very sudden and dramatic improvement in battery life and I thought that I'd post what seems to have worked for me.
I installed setCPU and set it for
768/254 on demand - main
245/245 performance screen off
368/368 performance - battery<41%
battery<101% 768/245 on demand
I installed Ultimate JuiceDefender and set it for extreme - blocking all connectivity except for a white-list
I decided that I could do a better job than the auto screen, so I installed Brightness level and I keep it generally at about 20% and then flick it up a bit if I need it.
I disabled auto rotation and now toggle the screen with a widget.
I've taken phone calls, recorded phone calls, checked email a few times, tweeted - very often using wifi which I operate using a toggle widget
I had the phone on charge all night switched off.
Disconnected it at 8.00 this morning and at 6.30 this evening, the JD widget tells me that there is still 12hrs and 28 mins of battery time left.
Considering the size of the screen and what this phone does. And considering the very poor battery life - 8hrs max I was getting before, I am far happier and the phone now becomes a practical item to have.
Whats your percentage battery left?
seems to be saying 72%
I also noticed that for the first time screen usage is less than running usage.
Screen consumption has always been the big factor on phone - and I see that is what people say on the forum, so I'm very pleased to have reduced it so well.
The Brightness level app allows a variable control whereas all the other screen controllers have seen allow you only to rotate through three or four preset brightness levels.
Brightness Level lets you do that with a widget but it also has a slide bar, which is what I was looking for
So basically you've downgraded the DHD to a level of a Nokia S40 device imo As this has been covered by many others in many other battery life related threads I'm just saying this short and simple. Just use the device as it is supposed to, enjoy the awesome features it provides at the full potential and don't get fixated on the battery life, it'll get you through the day no problem (doesn't include playing angry birds for three hours straight ) and just plug it in when you have the chance.
About battery, some tips, my battery life is around 2 days with normal usage of phone, only i dont use 3g only wi-fi:
Brightness - between 25% and 50%
When you on the internet and use native explorer for android go to "Menu-more-settings-enable plugins" and set it to "On demand"
Tupe *#*#4636*#*# - "Phone information" and set "Preffered network type" to "GSM Auto Prl"

your on stock rom mate?
i can see that you can charge your phone while its turnd off..
i think on customized ROM like ARHD LD CORE cm7 and etc cannot charge their phone while its off because iT will BOOTup to recovery mode
Doesn't performance mode just keep the CPU clock on it's maximum? It would rather shorten the battery life than prolong it.
Why buy a smartphone and use it like a landline lol i hammer my phone and still get 10-14 hours out of it, thats fine for me, i only get 3hrs out of my laptop lol
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Mate there is something eating your battery if u only get 8 hours battery life.
These adjustments you made are unnecessary if you find the culprit that is eating your battery, why get a phone like the dhd and run it on 20% brightness and lower the cpu to such a level.
Have you used spare parts to check your battery usage?
Im currently on 40% and my phone has been unplugged since 27 hours and I don't even have setcpu installed.
Maybe you should post details on your barret usage!
Swyped from my sexy galaxy tab
But I'm not compromising anything now. I'm completely happy with the way that the phone works for me now.
I'm actually operating the screen at 12% for most of the time - when I am not outside and it doesn't present any difficulty for me.
Obviously I would always like better battery life and I'll look for more ways to improve it.

According to setCPU, if you set it to on demand, it will keep on scanning for required power level. Performance automatically goes to the max. Apparently on demand uses slightly more power so they advice to use performance when possible. So I set the same max/min figure and use a performance governor.
i would actually consider rooting the phone as an alternative, or getting a bigger battery. i have alot of issue with the battery life previously, but after switching rom, it actually help alot
Well it is rooted to enable JD and setcpu to work. But I haven't dared go further because I am still trying to understand the entire process - and also the way back!
I probably will eventually.
I've ordered a 1500 Mugen - and if that actually exists and if it is an improvement on the stock battery then that will advance things as well.
I'm very pleased with the improvement I have achieved so far because at least I'm able to take the thing off the tit for a full working day and use it as a real mobile phone!!

Yup2x, it's true that we can charge it very well while in recovery mode. I was referring to the situation wherein the printer reboots to recovery as soon as you plug in the charger to your DHD. Some users have reported that and they are all using 3.x.x.x.

As far as I've understood, you will always have max frequency when performance is applied. So there is no use setting min value really as it doesn't matter.

If you're on EC05, a bunch of people are complaining about bad battery life. I think it's because the auto brightness settings are pretty bright and need to be toned down a bit. That's my guess, but it might be something deeper.

Seriously, my battery life is the exact same as DI18 as it is on EC05. Learn how to use your phone efficiently.
And if you dare to have the nerve to disagree with me, I'll redirect you to "Poor Battery Life" threads from EVERY SINGLE DEVICE on XDA. I doubt every carrier and company is making the battery life horrible, nah just the users.

Sorry child, but my battery life is worst with ec than eb with the same set up. I think most people are comparing their battery life between various updates using the same setup. If you don't see a difference then so be it, but if a lot of people see a decline in the battery life then it's something that people may want to know so they can decide if they want that version. If it's due to more brightness then it's still a setting that's not what you may want.

When I received EB13, my battery life was way worse than D18. The battery would drain in 5 hours with no use. I finally reset it, and it was like having a completely different phone. Everything worked like it was supposed to. I can have wifi, gps, and auto-bright on at all times with no battery drain. I stopped running Advanced Task Killer this time around as well. My friends didn't believe me, but here is my battery after 24 hours. This is normal use...slacker to and from work (40 minutes total), check email, txt messages here and there, and a few phone calls.

Are people testing their battery life before or after installing extra system tools? I was burned on my last Android phone after realizing automated task/cpu/etc apps were doing more harm than good. Nowadays I just run stock, with some apps removed, the launcher replaced, and brightness managed manually, and I rarely struggle with my battery life (my biggest enemy is the weak signal at work).
It somehow reminds me of driving with your windows down to reduce the fuel consumption of the A/C, just to cause the same problem with drag.

I initially did Menu, Settings, Privacy, Factory data reset and then I did the following just for the hell of it since I already did the factory reset. Figured it wouldn't hurt.
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Hold the volume down, camera and power buttons until the system recovery screen appears.
3. Use the volume keys to scroll to wipe data/factory reset and select that option using the home key.
4. You will see a warning on the screen telling you that you are about to reset your phone and erase all your personal information.
5. Press the volume up key to proceed. Press the volume down button to exit and not reset your phone.
6. After the reset is complete, use the home key to select reboot system now.
7. Your phone will turn off and turn back on.

Best battery saving settings..?

Rom: unity 1.29

What i have been doing to counter the 4g problem is use 2g for non phone use times and 4g when i actually need to download or use mobile data. Ive also heard that auto brightness helps drain the battery faster than without. autosync settings can be important too. dont have it sync everything if you dont need it to. I get a long time on my battery and usually set it on the charger at night with 30-40% left.
edit: you didnt list the governer you are using. I use smartass or conservative for screen on or off and they help keep the clock speeds down if you arent doing something heavily dependant on phone speed like a game. Also when you say your radio is stock gingerbread, do you mean the newest leak one or stock that came with the phone? I have found the panache to give me the best reception which in turn saves the phone from draining itself from trying to find a signal.
Whoops New I forgot something..yeah my governors are smartass for when screen on and conservative when sleep.. when I say stock gingerbread radio I meant the link before the panache radio
I got my best battery life using faux123's AOSP roms, and his latest kernel has an undervolted version which makes it waste less battery without taking any toll on the performance. I don't particularly like the sense roms too much because I feel like they drain my battery power faster than aosp ones, and I don't even use all the features to their fullest extent.

I've heard the same thing as well actually. Personally I keep my brightness at minimum all the time(10%), but you could try 25% if that's too dim for you. 40%-60% is usually bright enough to see clearly on even the brightest days too, and I'm one of the unlucky people with a bad screen.
I'd also recommend downloading Muzikant's "AutomateIt" app and setting up some rules. I recommend setting rules that will brighten your display for apps that really need the light(Netflix, Camera, Gallery), and then dimming it back down once you close the applications. You can have it turn off your data and syncing and other such things under specific conditions and times as well, which can help your battery life immensely, and without you actively having to do anything.
And I guess you could try flashing a new radio as well. You might have to test out each one for a few days to notice the differences between them but eventually you'll find which one works best for your area and phone.
If the batteries you're using isn't the stock one, most likely those batteries will die out really quick. They don't hold their charge that well.

[Q] Battery life is turrible

So, I got a Galaxy S4 back at the beginning of December, and the battery life has just been awful since I got it. I'm talking 5 hours max.. of juice. Its bugging me because I have tried so many different options and nothing makes it last any longer. One time I got 8 hours and I was like planning on throwing a parade because it was so groundbreaking for my GS4.
Here's what I normally have going on:
Admittedly I use my phone quite a bit and it's always on full brightness because hey its a $600 1080p phone so I want to be able to use it to its full potential.
I do not have one game installed. Never been a huge fan of mobile gaming.
I usually have a 4-5 bar 4G signal and barely use my wifi because it's like 300kb/s down.. And really spotty.
I may listen to 30 minutes of music a day.
Most of the time I'm on twitter and looking up stuff on Chrome.
This is not a battery issue I do not believe because my brother got the same phone and he has had similar issues. My brother uses his phone maybe half the time I do, so I doubt it is my usage that is bringing it down. I seriously do not want to have to contact Samsung for them to tell me it probably has water damage and then ask me to wait 2 weeks to get my phone back. My phone does tend to get warm from time to time but I've seen multiple reports of that. My iPhone 4 that I upgraded got 8 or 9 hours of battery life on similar use. (Android rocks)
So what is the problem?
P. S. my phone ran down 8% while typing this.

Are you running a custom or stock rom? And are you rooted?
Look at your battery usage in settings. Screen should be number 1. What's after that? Get betterbatterystats and see where your wake locks are. Without some additional info it's hard to help you

No I am not rooted anymore. My phone had a locked bootloader so I just uninstalled some bloatware and unrooted. I have had the problems since I got it.
Android 4.3
AT&T i337
MK2 Firmware

It depends on what I am using the most. Most of the time its below 10% of total battery use. I would say it is mostly Chrome at 4-8%.
Right now it has been on for 37 minutes and is at 85% battery.
84% screen
7% Chrome

so under battery usage it's just screen and chrome usually ? (iId dump chrome to begin with anyway)
Is GPS on ? Any other apps that would be constantly syncing like facebook, twitter, etc ?

Yes, normally screen and chrome are the biggest consumers but I do use a few more apps. I've been wanting a Chrome alternative, but nothing I've tried has been as efficient.
I do use Twitter and Facebook(rarely), but at the same time, my brother doesn't use any social media and his battery isn't much better.

The biggest user of battery would be the screen, LTE, and GPS or location based processes. Honestly LTE that doesn't use much unless you are streaming all the time. Something isn't letting you phone go to sleep and if you can root I would just do it to be able to use an app like greenify or another wakelock killer that lets you keep apps from keeping you phone awake. Also turning off sync in general helps i.e making you refresh stuff manually.

Thanks for your help so by the way. I always have gps off and I only get regular 4G in my area. I will check with Facebook and try to turn off automatic syncing. Rooting is an option, last time I went through kingo and did it just fine until I tried to flash Cm over my locked bootloader *facepalm* Haha. I haven't heard anything definitive on the downside of using that tool. It was very simple. Would you suggest me going that route for Greenway?

No problem just hit the thank button
I'd root and just leave it stock the rest of the way. With battery life it's always YMMV. The battery stats given in the setting menu don't tell you much so apps like wakelock detector or Greenify allow you to stop apps from "waking" the device all the time to either push notifications, sysnc, do whatever crap they do in the background. You could also get something called better battery stats, the app in on xda just google it, and let it run from full charge to dead and then take some screenshots of partial wake locks, how often CPU is in deep sleep etc and others can help sort some out.
Just root with Kingo as its easy and leave the custom rom's alone haha.
BTW how did you fix the brick form flashing a custom rom on MK2 ? I'm on the good MDL firmware so not sure how others fixed the MK2 brick

Well after about a zillion tries on Google I finally found where someone got out of soft brick. It was something like hold down volume down, home, and power buttons until two options come up after you first power on the device. They are like "proceed to recovery mode" or "boot regularly" (something close to those anyways) and then you hit the volume down key to select boot regular and it boots up the phone without seeing that Oden screen. I was so relieved, I had already BSed my chat with a Samsung rep so they probably would have fixed it do to "accidental" downloads caused my phone to brick.
Watch out having your brightness to 100%. My statusbar got burnt into my phone. Just be careful. I can see the clock numbers(blurry) as well as battery and such. It sucks.

Yeah I just wish I would have been warned as well, now I just keep my status bar off. It's not directly noticeable if I don't look at it but it's still there.
