I've had my Xoom since launch day and absolutely love it, but to this day I am disappointed in the fact that it has no vibration feature at all. What's up with that? Even low end phones have this feature. I know the Xoom is NOT a phone and should NOT be compared to one, but... are tablets too cool for this kind of feature?
For example.. if the Xoom had a vibration feature it would add haptic feedback to anything you tap on the screen which might include the softkeys or the keyboard. It would also add more fun to the games. Imagine playing Samurai Vengeance II and it shakes when you get attacked or kill the enemies, that would enhance the gaming experience similar to that of the Sony PlayStation Dual Shock.
I just don't understand why they would leave such a common feature like this out. Are any of the new Android tablets going to make use of a vibration feature? I don't see why not, right?
is there even hardware that supports this? I would take my xoom apart and check but im pretty sure someone already has. If the device has the hardware then once we get aosp we should be able to get it working.

Motorola already explained this during the tech demo. They said it was a decision of 3 things Battery Life, Necessity and most importantly cost or production. So that makes more since. its already borderline $800.00. So i can totally understand..Trust me, we'll live. lol

That does make more sense. And true.. we will live, I know I am. It would be a neat feature though. Do we think future tablets will have a vibration feature ever? Or can we safely rule that one out altogether? Like I said it is such a common feature this day and age.
But I think that someone somewhere will put out a tablet that does and has absolutely everything possible built into it and onto it, it's bound to happen eventually regardless of price. I like to call them the "King" device. Much like how I see the Xoom right now along with the DROID brand.
I have to disagree with you guys, I find I cannot possibly use my Desire or my Galaxy Tab without haptic feedback on the keyboard. It's a very necessary feedback to me considering the lack of tactile feedback from the screen.
I'm very disappointed to hear this considering I'm currently weighing up my pre-order of this thing.

I hear that! That's why I made the original post. I am on your side. It really is a shame that I am typing on my Xoom this very second without that awesome haptic feedback! If only... if only...
oh i like haptic feedback
but if i was doing some serious typing i'd probably buy a keyboard
I played Tank Hero the first day I got the Xoom and was very disappointed when the Xoom didn't buzz when I got hit.

You have a point I suppose, I need the Haptic on my Desire because I rely on it for fast texting, on the galaxy tab I rely on it for my fast google talking, but the XOOM is a different device, the most i'm likely to want to type are some google searches, maybe the odd email.

What's the problem with using a rotating weight that is off-balance? They do that in most phones, cheap as heck. EXAMPLE
wouldn't something this heavy require some major vibrations that could cause more problems down the road?
Just attach your girlfriend's to the back of your xoom. Problem solved.

Not really, the Galaxy Tab has a very subtle vibrate, in the right plane it only has to be very slight and it makes all the difference compared to no vibrate.
Maybe some sound at just the right frequency and amplitude could cause resonance, we could use that as the "haptic" feedback.
Let me find out you guys use that haptic feedback in your lap for "other reasons". Lol type a lot these days aye?!!??

Neodymium magnets are not that expensive. There are already probably 5 or 6 tiny ones in the Xoom.
I like the feedback when typing but when you think about it. Why would you want to lose the battery life and gain the extra weight. Its a tablet not a phone, Im cool with without it. Just my 2cents
I dont miss it, or even understand why I would want it. How can you "rely" on haptic feedback for typing? I dont mean to sound troll-y, but that just doesnt make sense to me. I typically turn off haptic and keytones on all my devices because I find it to be a bit obnoxious. I've kept haptic on since my last flash on my Epic because.. laziness mostly. I dont feel that it adds anything to the experience and I think from all my rom-flashing mishaps I've mentally associated the haptic feedback with impending terrible FC doom, so it sort of scares me when it happens. I start typing a text and I'm like "oh crap not now... oh nevermind"
galaxy tab and dell streak 7 have vibration, these are tablets so.. i see how that reduces the battery life but its definitely a nice feature to have for games... Im considering buying (or was lol) but learning that is lacking vibrate mode its aturn off! btw does the wifi tablet have a GPS? thanks

I currently have a T-Mobile G1 and I have been thinking of an upgrade.
Have any of the current Vibrant owners come from a G1?
If so, are you happy with your new phone/glad you switched?
If you aren't a past G1 owner, I still value your input.
Thanks for any/all opinions.
I lost my G1 a little over a week ago, and got a Vibrant as a replacement. So far I'm pretty happy. There are a few things to know though. First of all, no matter what anyone says to the contrary, the software keyboard is a poor substitution for a real hardware keyboard, and not a day goes by that I don't miss the keyboard on my G1. That said, I have found alternatives that work for me, but might not for everyone. I was a longtime Palm user, so the addition of a capacitive stylus and Graffiti for Android went a long way toward easing my lost keyboard anxiety. Also, the speech to text on the phone is surprisingly good, and once I found a program that optimized the speech to text workflow (Ultra Keyboard), that got me set so that between those two, I can get by without a hardware keyboard.
You should also know that the compass on the Vibrant is complete garbage compared to the G1. It is slow to update, inaccurate, and sometimes just freaks out and points in a direction that has absolutely nothing to do with where the phone is pointing. Some people also report poor GPS performance, though I haven't had this problem.
The bad stuff out of the way, it is SO MUCH faster than the G1! That, and I actually like some of the additions Samsung made to Android. I don't like how the whole thing looks so iPhoney, but it all works really well, and given the choice I wouldn't go back to a G1 from the Vibrant.
The compass and gps suck. There are various settings that help the gps, but we really need a driver update from samsung. Hopefully they will get on that soon and not make us wait for 2.2.
As for the keyboard, I like swype almost as much as a real keyboard. The voice input works good as well, but swype doesn't have the button for it for some reason. Hopefully they will add it soon.
Overall, it's a great phone and the speed and screen will blue you away coming from a g1.
I came from a G1. The phone is incredible, but the hardware/drivers have their rough edges, no doubt. I might have waited a little longer in hopes of the manufacturing becoming more consistent had I known of the issues before I bought, but when all is said and done I'm quite happy. Just not as happy as I could be.
I am really picky when it comes to this kinda stuff. Loved my g1 and thought twice about getting this phone for several reasons lyk 5mp camera when others offer more, not keyboard, forward facing camera and screen size but overall i gotta say i love this phone and wouldnt think twice about it. This phone performs amazingly and the screen is beautiful the battery is great for me atleast the gps is good no issues here and lastly the speed on the phone itself and online is crazy i love it. I couldnt be happier and it fills in the g1's shoes very nicely. I loved my g1 but i think i like this phone alot more.
Yes, I like this phone more than the G1. It was time for me to ditch the qwerty keyboard anyways and I don't like how it adds bulk to any type of phone. Plus, there are already plenty of accessories for the phone already since T-Mobile was smart enough to have the dimensions very similar to the original Galaxy S.
Many of us came from the G1 (contract about up, y'all?).
With Swype, I'm not at a huge loss for the hardware kb - the slide mechanism on the G1 was always a little scary to me, so I'm glad to be rid of that. hat being said, if the option was available, I'd've taken the SGS w/the kb.
I also dislike the iPhone rip-off part of Samsungs UI, but there are many benefits, too. The notification buttons are great & save homescreen space. Many other small things.
The biggest gripe is the GPS. IT IS TERRIBLE! It will literally lock up my phone after not locking onto the 12 satellites it can see. Buncha bull****.
But, all-in-all, the G1 was getting tired, so I'm glade to move on.
-bZj
I was very hesitant about getting a phone with no physical keyboard. About a month before I bought my vibrant, I used just the virtual keyboard on the G1. I have to say, Swype is the best thing since slice bread for keyboard technology. I can actually "type" faster with Swype than I did with my G1. Like others, my only gripe about the vibrant is the gps issues. I don't use it daily but if Samsung doesn't fix this, they will never get my business again with ANY product. That said, I'm pretty sure they will fix this, it would be a PR disaster otherwise.

I would never sell my G1 either!
I will use it as a mini-netbook until it dies of natural causes (I still won't get rid of it).
It has a full keyboard, wifi, I paid for Docs2Go, so I have an office suite,
it has a camera, mp3 player, full web, etc...
My biggest fear was the loss of the keyboard as well. I do miss it at times (mainly games), but swype is very fast and it took all of a fe messages to start swyping as fast or faster than the keyboard. Its not the same thing, but it does a great job.
Gpa and compass... Well, you know by now. I'm confident it'll be fixed soon.
The screen is amazing, even in bright sunlight. Movies on the phone rock. And the speed is unbelievable. It's so worth the upgrade!
One other bonus... With the galaxy s being on every carrier, it had the best chance of many mods and released quickly once things get going.

You can't compare the two...not only different ballparks...different sports altogether. But even with that in mind, I STILL have my trusty G1 for when I'm feeling nostalgic . If you can, go for it. You'll like it.
I know the two devices' internals are extremely similar, but I'm strongly considering getting the G2 anyway. I'm just having a hard time fully commiting to justifying the purchase even though I really, really want it, haha.
What do you think? Are the pros and cons for this upgrade a worthwhile endeavor?
Here's what I'm thinking so far:
Pros:
The Adreno 205 GPU, supposedly 4 to 5 times more powerful than the N1's: http://gizmodo.com/5633855/g2s-benchmarks-show-that-despite-processor-speed-it-should-be-fast
Flash Hardware Acceleration, which apparently the N1 cannot do (wtf? really?) (see "Adreno 205 features": http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/for...t-compare-to-other-gpus/page__pid__65#entry65 )
Lower clock speed CPU (800 MHz) vs the N1's 1 GHz, yet the same performance (or better). This, along with the last point = possibly better battery life?
Better multitouch panel (no axes flipping). Would be good for those multitouch games, which I've mostly avoided with the N1
No screen miscalibration issues (having to turn screen off to fix)
Optical trackpad rather than trackball = longer life / won't get dirty / break.
[Edit 9/29]:
HSDPA+!!! For faster 3G, or "4G" even!
Much more internal space for apps etc (4GB on the G2 vs 512MB on the N1)
(Hopefully) the soft button weirdness is fixed (ie the pressure points on the N1's soft buttons aren't directly on the button labels)
Wifi Calling Possibly? http://phandroid.com/2010/09/27/t-mobile-g2-to-feature-wi-fi-calling-but-no-tethering/
Cons:
Slower Google Updates since the N1 will still be the developer phone and the T-Mobile G2 won't be
The G2 will be a bulkier and heavier device
Optical trackpad = no trackball notifications [Edit 9/30]: --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCUrxJg_TwQ !!!!!!!
Cost / inconvenience of switching devices (my contract ends in March 2011 so I'd buy off-contact and re-sell my N1 to cover the cost)
Small screen; I'd really like a 4" screen, preferably a Super AMOLED. Sticking with 3.7" is a downer. And there's always some better device on the nearby horizon. However, one with Stock Android is going to be rare, is it not?
[Edit 9/30]:
No FM Radio, HDMI-Out, or Front-Facing Camera (not that the N1 has these, but surely other phones coming out a month or two after the G2 might)
And then there's the keyboard, which at this point I consider neither a positive nor a negative. I've grown accustomed to an on-screen keyboard (Swype) on my N1, and I'm not really that heavy of a texter anyway. So it could be amazing to have a physical keyboard again (I had the G1 previously), or I might ignore it and hate the added weight/bulk.
What do you think? Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Any other pros or cons that I'm missing?
i want one, but to justify it like u said is hard. The N1 is still IMO one of the top phones out even after all these other phones. I will keep mine for some time. Since I never upgraded with my N1 I will buy my wife the G2 since shes coming from the Cliq. They just got 2.1. She will enjoy the bigger screen, flash for the cam, and flash/ 2.2 and she has to have a keyboard.
Will there be a N2 or a phone the google will call there N1 in the future? Thats what I wait for. There is no way Im selling my N1 either
N1 to Vibrant or G2 or what?
I had the misfortune of having my N1 "go away" (don't ask) and I ended up going for a Vibrant as the "next best thing" -- but have since been feeling left out of the Android game (I'm an Android developer, as well) and have been looking at the G2 with some interest.
I've pretty much decided to wait. The N1 is still the phone of choise for developers, ROM cookers, and modders. Part of it is because it's great hardware, but I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it's the closest thing to the Android code base. It will always get the first updates, it will always get a more stable platform, and it's pretty much the phone that Android itself is coded for/on. Every google employee has one (or at least had one at one point), including the google devs. And I think it will be that way until google either launches another phone, or has an intimate connection to a specific phone (maybe even on a specific carrier.) That's the phone I'm waiting for. And hopefully my Vibrant will catch up a bit with the custom ROMs and I can go back to "pure" stock Android. Not into my Android looking so much like iOS.
The N1 and the G2 are great phones, and I think they'll be at the top of the pile for a while longer, but they won't be forever. And I'm just waiting to see where the next next generation phone shows up.
Just sharing my thoughts, not really looking for debate on my points.
My biggie would have to be INTERNAL SPACE. This is a major flaw in the nexus. I can't even install sense like roms along with my necessary apps because of this.

If you're a developer, wouldn't it make more sense to stick with N1 instead of the Galaxy? Even with Gingerbread/3.0 coming out soon (read: Nov/Dec) the N1 is still pure Android supposedly be able to run 3.0 as well.

How many necessary apps do you require? I was able to install the Sense ROM from these forums without issues.
One in particular is a space hog for corporate email "Good for Enterprise" takes up well over 35mb on a slow day and it contains widgets so i cant move it to SD.
Did you go through all HTC apps and move them to SD card?
Either way to most internal space i have even now on cm6 is 30mb, internal space on the nexus is horrible.
@fnirt: Yeah you're right; I forgot to mention that the N1 will probably have more support from XDA etc than the G2. Although... Cyanogen, THE man himself, is actually purchasing a G2... So who knows, maybe the G2 will gain just as much support from the community as the N1?
@gkaugustine: Ah yes, I didn't even consider internal space. The N1 has 512 MB of space for apps while the G2 has 4 GB? Wow, good jump. Although I can't say I have trouble with this since I use the Apps2SD feature of CyanogenMod6 to move all my large apps.
Oh yeah! HSDPA+!!
Well, I didn't even think about this until you mentioned it...no trackball alerts?
There better be some blinking (and I mean every 2 seconds, not the idiotic one every 15 seconds we had at the launch of the nexus) led notification.
Otherwise it's a dealbreaker for me.
But if they're right about flash being hardware accelerated...I'm intrigued, for the first time. (I don't care about gaming because the only time I find myself having TIME to game, I'm already home and my PS3 with Wipeout HD are right there).
Honeslty Paul I wouldn't upgrade until you know that there are no GPS issues like the galaxy phones and other issues which may not be apparent until later.
IMO, the Nexus One is still the most complete package of a phone.
Yep, no trackball alerts. Though I think the trackball as we know it will soon be phased out of all phones forever (in favor of trackpads), so you can pretty much kiss that feature goodbye. In addition to trackballs getting dirty and eventually trackball failure, it's probably cheaper in the long run for the manufacturer due to less support and fewer phone replacements.

Yeah, I'm definitely not going to pre-order the G2. I want to at least play with it in store (unlike I did with the N1, though that was a HUGE jump from the G1, so it didn't matter as much).

I realize that, and I am already starting to worry about my Nexus's trackball becoming dirty/sticky and I have no idea how I'm gonna replace it. I'm all for trackpads, but having no dedicated LED light like on the iPhone or the Galaxy S phones is totally a dealbreaker for me. I don't want to have to grab my phone to know I have a message. Do you know if the G2 will have one?
But I like the idea, IF true, that it will hardware accelerate Flash, because more and more sites are starting to have higher quality videos which get choppy on the Nexus, and that's unfortunate, since one of my regular bashing points on the iPhone is the lack of flash.
Does anyone have the internal spec sheet on the G2? im interested to know where the radio antenna is installed.
I love my trackball... especially when I had my sidekick 3 and it had trackball notifications. Awesome and convinient.
I would hold off... I have a full upgrade with tmobile and I'm holding off for a bigger screen, front facing camera, and other gingerbread goodies to come next year.

I'm sure that at the very least it has a charging light, that can be hacked. I've also heard for other phones of people looking into hacking one of the 4 soft buttons, so that the backlight on one of them acts in a similar manner to our trackball notification.

Just a heads up. There is a led notification at the top right of the phone that Does appear to blink. Also, a lot of people are saying the ring around the trackpad lights up. So we'll see.
I just sold my N1 for $400 and pre-ordered the G2.
What sealed the deal for me:
4GB internal memory
720p recording - I know the N1 has it hacked, but it was always slow for me.
Dedicated GPU
Flash Acceleration
No multi-touch/screen positioning issues - This was a big one for me
HSPA+
Keyboard - I text a lot :\
What I'll miss:
Fast updates
Crazy dev support
Beautiful styling
Noise-canceling
AMOLED display - G2 uses STFT.

They could, and should think about doing a light halo around the trackpad like around the button on the touch pro... (obviously it should be a RGB one, not just plain white leds)
Even better let it have segments (like an xbox...)

I have been reading tons of gripes and woes about the Atrix. I picked mine up this morning at 9am. So far, here are my thoughts and feelings - broken down by Pros (+) and Cons (-).
+The display is pretty. It is not a retina display, but it does not claim to be. It is a high resolution display that works surprisingly well in sunlight (trust me, I just returned the inspire, which was unreadable in real light). The text looks crisp, images look great. Its not perfect, but it is current. Sure, if you put your eye an inch from the display you can see some pixels - I am basing this comment off realistic viewing distances and I think it looks great.
+The phone is fast. Really fast. If you are worried about animations being slow - just disable them - screens load instantly.
+++The BATTERY - Best. Hands down best part of the phone. You can take advantage of android, all of its syncing...everything. and get a day. With smart use (and if you don't need to sync social things on their own) you can get much more out of it.
+Phone is tiny, feels great in the hand.
+One click root at launch - can't beat it. For me, removing (freezing) the bloat is 3/4 the battle.
- The haptic feedback thing pisses me off, but whatever. The battery is big enough.

Yes, we know this, and it is disabled. I am referring to the four android buttons at the bottom.

I love the phone so far. I have a new minor niggles with it, but overall, it's a TON better than my captivate. The sound, the haptic, etc are all so much better, and the build quality of the phone seems INFINITELY better.
I'll deal with the small stuff for now, I know we'll get them taken care of. This thing is 100x better than that captivate was when I pulled it out of the box... I couldn't imagine being forced to use the stock ROM on that thing! It was so slow, it reminded me of my Magic!

Do you really see that big of a difference in battery life with haptic disabled?

I agree with you. I am going to sell my EVO and replace with the Atrix.
the EVO has great features but the Atrix is better IMHO
You listed my reasons almost exactly as in order I would too! the battery lasts ALL day with normal use for me which included playing WSOP poker game listening to music and about 50 text messages and about 10 minutes of calls and about 15 minutes of web use and emails. I love the custom ROMS with the EVO but I can't hold that against the Atrix. But the roms will come later....
I am satisfied enough to cancel service with sprint and sell my EVO!!
I installed ADW Launcher and it makes things a lot more easier to use.....
This thing is FAST!

Phone speeds are garbage, the bootloader is revolting. Android Froyo is ancient. This phone is wasting its credentials. It went to harvard and is working as a toll booth operator.
How is froyo ancient when every single device out but the nexus has it?
"Completely" satisfied... no.
The data speed issues really have me rethinking the phone.
FroYo with Moto Blur... I can live with it for now, but 2.3 needs to come quick.
Being able to root it from day one was a pleasant surprise, so having the ability to preform some tweaks helps.

I'm also super happy with it.
My only complaint is the screen size... coming from an HD2 (evo essentially) it's Freaking TINY. It's a challenge to adjust to.
The phone is ridiculously nice though, I have all the accessories and they're also SICK... the laptop dock is a LITTLE off... but that's really just personal preferences... my brother loves the laptop dock... I think it's beautiful and nice but I don't like the keyboard or the lack of a scroll pad on the touch pad. You can just pop a USB mouse into it though or use a Bluetooth mouse then it's RIDICULOUS nice.

You're trolling quite a bit here, nicely done.
Froyo is ancient, but there are only 2 phones as of today with official builds of Gingerbread and those are the 2 dev phones....developer phones...get it?
The Atrix is super fast so not sure where the garbage comment comes from. The bootloader is locked and you would have known that when you bought it so don't act so damned surprised. You should definitely return the phone asap so we don't have to read any more of your comments.
Obvious troll is obvious.

Yup.
Every slight imperfection of the phone (except for I think the haptic feedback thing) was touched upon in Engadgets review. If you didn't know what you were in for then it is your own fault.
Two Cents
Went to the store today, and it is a top of the line phone. I've been inches away from purchasing twice.
I can deal with the locked bootloader, but not the capped Upload Speeds and impact on download. The downloads at the store was getting the 2.5Mbps but the upload never crossed 300Kbps. Until this is fixed, I am on the sidelines anxious to jump in.
I have a Nexus S and One still and I am very happy with this Atrix 4G. It is very fast and functional.
My only concerns is the par camera, not as good as the Nexus S screen, and no more ginger bready goodness.
I'm going to keep the Atrix 4G, at least until an ATT Nexus S releases.
Same for me. I'll wait to see if att can fix their network or see what Verizon LTE has to offer. IMHO it really doesn't matter how fast the hardware might be if it only sips data through a straw.

Agreed.
For an out of the box Smartphone it is very fast. Rooted within 15 minutes of ownership, Wireless tethering within 20! All I have left is to find a reliable Call Record or be able to change the phone app to include it and I am 100% with it. Not willing to experiment that much without a reliable image. One day, the Dev's here are awesome!
Thanks to Designgears for making this happen before it was even released!
Hi all,
Well it's been a good few months that you guys over in the States have had your hands on the Atrix.
The release is apparently 'imminent' here in the UK, so hopefully this thread and your feedback will help us decide whether it's worth pulling the trigger or not .
Whilst we are fortunate enough to be expecting either one or both of the HTC Sensation and the GSM EVO 3D by July, they are both 4.3" devices, and the Atrix - at the moment - still remains the only dual core device that we'll be getting here in the UK .
So, honest opinions, if you had your chance again now, would you go for the Atrix? Or hold out for something else?
Voting appreciated.
Pros/Cons would be ideal.
really loving mine. I have had two blackberries, 8330 and 9650 bold with os 6.0, all iPhone versions and numerous other stuff.
I love the Atrix for the 4" screen... the new 4.3" ers are too large for my hand.so 4" is the perfect screen size compromise in my opinion
the software is exteremely fast...
so yes, Im really loving mine to be honest.

^ Exactly why I'm still contemplating the Atrix. 4" is juust perfect
However, talk of everything being locked down is disappointing. Having run a HTC Legend, I'm lucky that we've had some dev backing, which has enabled me to run CM7 and a few other ROMs. Without this kind of dev work/support, I'd still be on FroYo at best...
The Atrix really, really, seems to be lacking on the dev front - it seems to put so many people off, and more significantly, the developers

this phone is really nice with a quick response. much faster than that of the galaxy s. even the original rom is already good enough.
the high resolution is really nice to let you see more on the screen
but the poor thing is the screen lost touching after touching too long!

Can you please elaborate a little on the bit in bold please?
I really like the Atrix and have owned one from its release date. Very fast and has many useful applications right out of the box. The virtual keyboard is much better than other Android phones I've owned, though I must admit that I do still prefer a physical keyboard. I have owned the G1 and Nexus One and like this phone much more than those.
There is only these "regrets". I wish the boot loader and software was easier to circumvent for custom rom installation. And I wish CyanogenMod had a ROM available for it. He does such great work.
I'm going to try to be patient and wait for the Motorola released version of Gingerbread, but I might try Gingerblur if it takes too much time to get an official release.
Very fast, great handset functionality, nice keyboard, great size, and the screen is beautiful. No regrets buying one with the exception noted above.

I mean, really Moto, how long does it take to get 2.3 out to the public, and its a darn dual core phone that cant use Live Wallpapers without massive lag....
As a result, I've got the Galaxy S II on pre-order waiting for delivery 5th May.

I love my Atrix. It's the first Android phone I've had. The iPhone 3GS was a perfect fit in my hand, and the Atrix feels exactly the same, albeit the buttons are in different places. I prefer my Atrix over the iPhone, and have found that even with it being locked down, the opportunities for customization are still way above the iPhone.
Is the Atrix fast?............Yes...............How does it compare to other Droid phones?..............I can't answer that one.
^ Thanks - a Scotman in Boston?? Can you bring me a GSM Atrix on your way back to the UK
The screen is bad. PenTile matrix is more visible on Atrix than on Amoled PenTiles despite higher resolution. Small text is blurry with visible pixels. Blue/green colored icons etc has very visible pixels. Blacks are grey and the screen suffers from banding / not showing true color. Scrolling in menus with small text results in flickering and inability to read the text. Moving the phone, like giving it a short twist makes pixel-patterns temporarily occur in bright areas.
The power-button is among the worst buttons ever put on a mobile phone. It has no feel, almost no travel and is placed in a 45 degree angle which makes it even harder to press.
Pinch zoom in the browser and photo gallery is extremely(!) choppy, much worse than many single core phones.
The camera is not good with tons of noise. The front facing camera is almost a joke as it produces cartoon-like pictures.
Other annoying thing is that it isn't possible to turn of the vibration of the google-buttons.
I have no idea what the he'll you're talking about. Because the fact that the 3.5 mm jack is on the right hand side, they couldn't have put it there. The lock button is also a biometric sensor, which saves me alot of time. It's not awkwardly placed once you think about it. Because it's a 4'' phone, the form factor is rather large. Not having to stretch my finger joints out to the very top seems like a bit of an advantage, no?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
And most if the lagging issues are w/ Motoblur. Get rid of it, and problem solved. The camera is a bit weak, but i'm not here to complain. I prefer a standalone camera anyway.
Overall, an exceptional phone that's a bit rough around the edges, but that'll sort itself out soon enough. Either from Moto, or third-party.

Wanna sell me that worthless thing for, $25.00?
I really like my atrix. I would buy it again.
Wife has an Iphone... She wants my atrix now.
Seems to be a lot of Professional phone users out here...
Hell, i'll take a second one. Never hurts to have a backup. If you want an awkward lock button, try the Galaxy S. That stupid thing is on the side. Whenever I use my friend's, I always end up locking the thing by accident or nearly ripping a hole in his USB port cover...

Hi guys, I m buying a Nexus One. I just have a few queries regarding the phone.
1: The N1 is running on OS 2.3.6 but the Quadrant scores are around 1100. Is it because its not rooted? Any good custom kernels available?
2: How's the performance of the phone? I mean HD gaming, 3D, etc. I own a Galaxy S and its variant from T-Mobile (Vibrant) and do not want to get disappointed by the performance of N1.
3: Any known issues/checks that I need to do before buying the phone?
Last question: Any hardware/software bugs?
Comments much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dinesh.

I can't answering the first two question's simply because I don't really do gaming and quadrant tests on mine.
-The Power Button on the N1 is a problem or could be a problem. You will see several members on here have had this issue. I personally have had to send mine back to HTC to get the power button fixed.
- The touchscreen sucks flat out lol. This is a known issue as well. Only thing you can do is turn it on and off and the screen will be calibrated again.
- Limited room for apps on the internal memory. That is when you do some kind of apps to sd type thing.
Aside from that it really is a great phone. I enjoy mine.
While I love my N1 to death (and will have a seriously hard time parting with it when I decide to upgrade), I can't honestly recommend this phone to anyone anymore. There are sooo many other phones out there with better hardware for the same price or less. The limited internal space of the N1 is a huge downfall. Granted, that can be alleviated a bit with various app2sdext options out there, but that is a hassle. Also, as hogg2500 mentioned, the powerbutton and touchscreen issues are really problematic.
Save yourself the money and get a more modern phone. The N1 is almost 2 years old, and while it was an awesome phone for its time (and it still holds up fairly well the newer competition), for the current price and the specs of the device, I just don't think it is worth it to buy.

1. quadrant scores mean nothing. i mean.. literally.. nothing. dont worry about it..
2. the n1 runs games very smoothly.. havent had any problems as long as you dont have 424252534 apps running at once lol
3.
- the problem of low internal storage means nothing when you have a class 6 microsd with a2sd or s2e
- some people have a power button problem. ive never faced this.
- the touchscreen works. the problem is, sometimes it gets a little weird thinking youre pushing buttons youre not close to lol. on certain kernels it happens often, but on others it rarely ever happens. also, multitouch has the axis crossing problem like most phones from its time. even my buddys nexus s sort of has that problem.
theres not much more i could ask for. (a slide-out qwerty woulda been nice ) although its almost reaching 2 years of age i can still use this phone for a few years. theres nothing new that has caught my attention in both hardware features and design.. theyre just little upgrades here and there. nothing to WOW me..
btw, there are 2 versions. AMOLED and SLCD.. the amoled has very clean looking colours..blacks are BLACK you know but with slcd you get a sharper crisper picture though.
Agree with bass and grimey,
But if you are paying 250.00 or more, actually more than 199.00, I would wait for the Nexus Prime
But, as bass said there are some awesome phones out there, many have Sense which some don't like
I am waiting for the Prime and ICS
Also, depends on your needs and expectations of your next phone--there are two big issues with N1 as mentioned--Pwr Button and Touchscreen are BIG. I also think Signal Strength sucks--IMHO
Go for the desire S,better hardware for the same price, and it looks better!
One of the nicest features of the N1 is the illuminated trackball.

i really REALLY wanted this phone but it didnt support AWS (1700mhz/2100mhz) .. but atleast i get a very useful colourful trackball
I just bought a N1 today off craigslist. Glad you asked these questions so i knew what to look for when i was buying. I followed all the advice of the other posters and i didn't find any problems at the time of purchase or after. Granted i've only had it for a few hours but just heed the advice given above check for the problems noted.
My N1 is still going strong. No power button issues, never really had any touch screen issues. Internal storage is a bit small. I think it really depends on what you want it for. As a PHONE (which all these devices really are first and foremost), it is one of the best call quality phones around. I always have a great conversation. Never dropped a call, and no static either, or any issues with voice at all. The earpiece may be a bit low for some, but it's fine for me. All current day apps run silky smooth. I Haven't found one that doesn't work. I haven't rooted it, but I have used "SetInstallLocation 2", so apps that aren't meant to be on the SD I now have there, so room really isn't an issue. I love the trackball notifications. All in all it's a great phone that still holds its own today. The look, feel, and finish makes it 1st class all the way.
